The thing that made my run awesome.

You know when you move somewhere new and you do a really unorganized job with your packing and then when you get to your new place you can’t find some of your favorite things anywhere?  That is what happened with my favorite purple headband.  This headband singlehandedly made my run amazing yesterday morning.  I hate any hair touching my face during a run and this is the only one that stays in place and slicks the hair back like magic.  Boys will never understand the importance of a good running headband so I don’t even try to explain to Billy how important this was for me.  I did 10 miles at a 7:50 pace and I would like to thank my headband for every hair sticking to my forehead moment.

For lunch I had leftover taco salad with a little Pace Picante, an apple and a banana with peanut butter (I stood in front of my fruit stand for 10 minutes trying to decide between the two but finally came to the conclusion that I needed the apple and banana in my life).

When I went back into the kitchen I realized that I forgot to include my necessary pb and j with my lunch and so I had to have one during Brooke’s afternoon nap while reading an actual book that is not written for teenagers… it has been a long time since this has happened.

Brooke has an addiction.  This girl can be so sad and the second we walk outside she is back to her normal awesomeness so we spend a lot of time at the pool talking about really important things in life like what to make for dinner and what outfit she should wear the next day.

Remember how I went on and on the other night about how I am now an amazing chef and how I am going to cook every night because it is so awesome and fun?  Yeah, that lasted a full 16 hours.  How could I cook when I had these two amazing items staring at me when I opened the fridge?  By the way, Billy and I both took a poll and have decided that this guacamole is by far the best we have ever had.

DSC 4078

I had mine on sourdough and put turkey, red onions, a head of lettuce and guacamole on that beauty.

You better believe that two adults (I actually don’t know if we can be classified as those) buy the bulk box of Fruit by the Foot… I think there are 60 in there:)  Everytime I eat them I am reminded of the lunches my mom used to pack for me.  My favorite ones were the ones that came with tattoos on the wrapper because I loved using them to put tattoos on my forehead, I was the coolest 4th grader on the playground.   Speaking of 4th grade I was on the championship kickball team and if my memory serves me right I was the one that kicked the winning run.

I can’t live without my Bic Bands. I’m instantly attracted to anything sparkly and when I saw the sparkly Bic Bands and tried them I was instantly hooked. My favorite color is the silver because it kinda reminds me of a tiara! (I don’t think I can be classified as an adult either)

My favorite treats in my lunch growing up were rice krispy treats! But I was also a very big fruit by the foot fan. We always had to open them by flinging them at each other.

If a sandwich has turkey and anything spicy on it I like it!

Last time I ran on the treadmill was maybe 2 weeks ago? I’ve been trying to incorporate more outdoor runs in my routine. The treadmill kept winning because of convenience but I missed being outside.

Reply

I usually just use a barrette and some bobbie pins, but I also really like activebands and bondibands.

Excellent job on the 10 miles/7:50 pace. Are you sure you had a baby six weeks ago? My youngest is 8 and I still can’t run faster than 8-9 min/miles ha ha!!

Reply

Oh girl, I hear ya! Thank goodness no one really sees me when I run in my basement or else it would be quite embarrassing. I usually throw back the hair in a messy bun and head band but my bangs stick out all over the place. I have yet to find a headband that actually stays on though.

Reply

Fruit by the foot!!!! I want it!! Now! Now! Now! It looks so tiny compared to the box. *sigh* Be still my stomach.

Reply

Bonding bands are best for me. They don’t move and absorb massive amounts of sweat! I have about 20 of then with fun sayings :)

Reply

What is a bonding band, and where do I get one? (or many!)

Reply

That should have said Bondi Band. My phone corrected it! http://Www.bondiband.com. :-). I found them at a race expo a few years ago and I have worn them ever since!

Reply

Fav sandwich components – Toasted english muffin w/ turkey deli meat & Hummus. SO good because the warmed english muffin makes the hummus all gooey and warm too!

Reply

I need to find an awesome headband that stays in place… because I can’t find one I put my hair back and then put a dorky clip right in the middle on top to keep my growing out bangs in place. Looks uber dorky. Gets the job done.

We had little debbies in our lunchboxes… I try to stay away from them all these days, as I’ll eat a whole box if I eat one.

My fave sandwich these days is veggies and guac… I’m on day 17 of eating vegan and I LOVE Guacamole!

Last time I was on a treadmill- it’s been a couple of years anyway… I’ve always hated them, but with winter around the corner and my love of running back and I’m more motivated than ever I’m reconsidering the relationship. (You are a rockstar btw… thanks for the inspiration!)

Reply

I am still in search of the perfect (cheap) headband. I just bought a set of three at target the other day on super clearance. They work ok, better than anything else I have. When it gets colder out I have a headband that covers my ears. That thing is great. It doesn’t move and keeps my ears from freezing off. Speaking of cold… I whipped out the tights and mittens for my run this morning. It wasn’t really cold enough for the mittens but at that moment I NEEDED them.

That’s nice that Brooke likes to go outside. I have been a nanny for just over 7 years now and I love taking the kids to just hang out outside or go on a walk. It is rather pleasant.

Reply

Ugh I have to do the bobbi pin thing, but then sometimes that is even a disaster. Every headband either gives me a headache or pops off when I run. What is a girl to do!

Reply

have you tried the headbands with the clear rubber or whatever on them on the part that touches your hair? that seems to help the grip.

Reply

Try bic bands (you can find them online). I always have that problem because my head seems to be kind of flat on the back so head bands always ride up and fall off. Bic bands stay right in place! Literally no other band has ever worked so you may have luck too.

Reply

Brooke is SO photogenic!

Favorite sandwich is Chicken, Feta, Tomato, Lettuce, and the crucial ingredient PESTO! Pesto makes everything better :)

Reply

I’m a hat girl for sure. However, for the winter I have a fleece headband that says “I don’t chase boys, I pass them” — can’t wait to be rocking that. If I didn’t shower the day before my hair will stay back on its own though … — So really it depends on 1. the season and 2. my hygiene.
And you’re right — boys don’t understand about the necessities of keeping our hair back, but then again, we don’t understand about inner-groin-area chafing (as much …) so perhaps we can call it even?
I’m ALL about the PB and banana grilled on my waffle-maker panini-style. YUM!!

Reply

My hair routine …. I french braid it, then tuck the tail under the braid and pull it up so there’s a little “waterfall” at the top, put on a head/sweat band, then a visor to hold the band it place. I’m very picky when it comes to this. I have many such little obsessions. Just ask… ;-)
PS – loved the sneakers Brooke was wearing yesterday. They looked SO big! ha ha Dress up is so fun!

Reply

I agree, avocado makes any sandwich better, actually, it makes anything at all better. yum.
I have super fine hair with lots of layers so it’s always flying everywhere. I’ve actually been lucky though and the cheapy scuncii (is that how you spell it?) bands work really well for me. They never bother me during a run but the minute I stop they instantly annoy me.
Btw, you are my running idol. 10 miles at 7:50 post baby?! I’ve never had a baby or seen those speeds. You are incredible!

Reply

Good thing you live in Cali now so Brooke can enjoy the outdoors year round!
I hate when hair touches my face when I run! I actually found some thin headbands from the grocery store that work perfectly!
My lunches were always super healthy when I was growing up so I never had fruit by the foot. But I remember sometimes my mom would make me a little trail mix and I loved those days because she’d put in some mini marshmallows!

Reply

Bobbi pins, lots of bobbi pins! :) Running in the morning also gives me the privilege of not brushing my hair before I put them in! :)

I ran yesterday…. (we have the same treadmill) :)

Have an awesome day!

Reply

Wow, ten miles on the treadmill is no joke. That’s a feat of mind over matter if nothing else!

I don’t wear running headbands because of a really lame reason: I look bad in themz! I just clip hair back with bobby pins and it seems to work out okay.

Re: the fruit by the loop…I can’t stand how sticky they make your fingers. I won’t buy those or variations of those for my daughter because of the stickiness factor. Now I sound like a horrible mommy, but don’t worry, she gets plenty of Annie’s bunny rabbit fruit snacks :)

Reply

My hair looks so cray cray when I’m working out that my trainer actually told me I look so different outside the gym hahah…desperate measures to keep it away from the face :D

Reply

I have SUPER THICK hair that drives me crazy when trying to get a workout in! My hairdo usually will consist of a bang braid on the side, being held down by a million clips, and leading to a ponytail, with flyaways being held down by a ChicaBand; love them!!! :-)

Reply

Awesome run!! Guac or avocado is a must on any sandwich or salad. Whatcha reading?

Reply

Again, Brooke si the cutest! And I can’t believe how quickly you’re getting back to running form!!!

I lose everything – I had an awesome lululemon headband that i cannot locate but typically I need a barrette and elastic but right now can’t locate any of my barrettes either!!

Is it horrible that I can’t even remember my lunch growing up?? I am petty sure I ate at school and I do remember in second grade we could buy thoe strawberry shortcake ice cream bars for .25 and those were incredible! I think they also come in chocolate eclair – crumbly stuff on the outside…

Turkey, hummus and veggies or Sunflower Seed butter and banana!

I did 3 miles on the treadmill yesterday with no music and it was boring!!!

Reply

When I had hear I never used anything to put it back. Just in a pony tail. It had to be tight though. No moving around.

I think you nailed the sandwich. That or turkey with pesto….tuna is realllly good sometimes too.

Reply

BIC BANDS. SR got me hooked, and now they are my #1 for lifeee.

Reply

A million bobbi pins because I have yet to find a headband that doesnt slip off. Although alot of people have told me to try Lululemon headbands.
I love scooby doo fruit snacks. Also-target brand are so yummy!!
Crunchy bread is a must for my sandwich. I love eckiel bread. Also-pbj would be my first choice…second is turkey and banana peppers.
Getting ready for my treadmill run right now. Need to pull myself away from the computer.

Reply

I used to roll up my fruit by the foot and stick it to the roof of my mouth like a retainer. I’d always do it right at the end of the lunch period, so it lasted for my entire next class. I WAS SO COOL.

Reply

I am also an avid headband user when I run, but I need to find one that’s tight enough to hold the hair back but not so tight that I get a headache once I’m done because recently that’s been happening. I’m running outside today but will be running on the treadmill tomorrow morning!

Reply

A ponytail and a visor. I haven’t run on a treadmill since about mid August.
Devil Dogs.
Bacon. And guacamole!

The Kidless Kronicles

Reply

Like you I have to have a headband! Love the wide Lululemon ones.
Oreo cookies and Dunkaroos were my favs, but we rarely got them.
Avocado, hummus and lots of veggies!

Reply

Does anyone else have the problem where your hair WILL NOT stay in a bun, but then the ends get all sweaty from touching your back and then knot?

Seriously I cannot solve this for the life of me haha

Reply

I ran on the treadmill yesterday! I love headbands…I have one by Pistil that’s pretty awesome.

Reply

I remember Fruit by the Foot! I used to get that in my lunches sometimes. Do you remember the watermelon ones? Gah! Those were my favorite. Oh! And Dunkaroos! My only beef with Dunkaroos was that the cookie to frosting ratio was WAY off. There definitely wasn’t enough frosting in there to make for serious cookie dunking.

Reply

I use headbands PLUS bobby pins. My hair is thick and wavy, and I have a lot of long-ish baby hairs that fly up back behind the headband and somehow manage to stick to my face unless I pin them down.

Last treadmill run was in August…and before that was October of last year. I don’t belong to a gym, so I don’t usually have access to treadmills. Good thing I like running outdoors in all weather!!

Reply

In the potentially stupid question category, when you run on the treadmill say for 7-10 miles do you stop at all? If so, how often and for how long? I used to consider my runs a total failure if I had to stop even once, so I would never run much more than 5 miles at a time. My hamstrings tend to tighten up easily on a treadmill, so lately I’ve been letting myself stop for 30 seconds max to stretch as needed during a longer run. I’ll even stop anywhere from 4-5 times. I hate it, but I figure at the end of the day its better to not get hurt and i’m still getting the mileage in..

Reply

-I’m all about the bobbi pins, otherwise I would actually have to shower after running for fear of crazy bangs!
-My all time favorite treat in my lunch was Dunkaroos. Every time I had them I was the envy of the lunch room.
-I am right there with you Turkey and Avocado sandwiches are the best.
-I ran on the treadmill on Tuesday. I did a quick 5K interval workout before my weights session.

Reply

I HAVE to have a headband on and my hair tied back… tight. I can’t stand it touching me either! I did 10 on the treadmill yesterday too— but not @ 7:50 ;)
I need to try that guac bc turkey and avacado (and some bacon too!) are my favs. Kneaders are THE best.

Reply

Oh yes, a quality headband is super duper important to get in a good run or workout – couldn’t agree more! Glad you found your favorite purple one. :) I LOVE turkey + avocado sandwiches. It’s easily my favorite sandwich combo!

Reply

Cannot believe you can keep that pace for that disance 6 weeks after having a baby…you rock!!!!!!! My hair is shorter, so keeping it up is a major pain…normally end up putting a bunch of Bobby pins in and hoping for the best. My favorite sandwich consists of turkey and avocado. We have been spoiled in PA with beautiful weather this summer, so I haven’t hit up the treadmill since April/May. That will be changing soon. My school has an indoor track, so if I get too bored with the treadmil I have another option

Reply

Outdoor running is my fav but I hit the treadmill 3-4 days per week simply out of convenience (it stays dark here till about 7 and hubby doesn’t like me running in the dark)

My goal is to do 10 miles on the treadmill…mind over matter:)

Reply

Brooke knows that outside is way better than inside, especially in CA. :)

When I was growing up, I remember having lunchables and thinking they were the best thing that ever happened to me.

Reply

What brand is your headband?? I had pretty much given up on that type of headband because they just won’t stay put on me :( I am a HUGE fan of Chickbands though!! Those are so cute and don’t move an inch, ever!!

Reply

headbands are great in theory for me, but my head is deceptively small. like same size as my 4 year old niece small, soooo headbands always fall off!

Reply

I used to love fruit snacks, Starcrunches, oatmeal cremes, or Nutty Buddies.. in my lunches. Sandwiches.. Peanutbutter and Fluff!

Reply

I use normal plastic headbands, I try and wear the athletic ones but they always slip off my head! And I lOVED fruit by the foot, fruit roll ups, gummies, cheez it’s and Oreos!

Reply

Hi Janae,

Bicbands and Sweatybands are great. They are a little on the pricey side for what they are, but they really do stay put and keep the hair back. Plus, you can get glitter ones, floral, animal print, and some races and charities even have their own designs.

Reply

Awesome 10!!

When running outsides, i wear a favorite hat to tame the hair. TM = bobby pins.

I loved goldfish as a kid, and still eat as a means to go back in time.

Reply

Dude, great job on your 10 miles!! You are so inspiring.
I live in Bic Bands.
I’m with you on the TJ’s guac. It really is the best store bought brand ever.

Reply

10 miles on the treadmill….wow. I ran on the treadmill this morning. ….for 2 miles.

Forgot to bring distraction. The 2 felt like 3 thousand billion. Ish.

Reply

I swear by my Bic Band! The sparkle ones are adorable and you can wear them when you work out, and also as a cute accessory. I wear my purple one for Ravens games too ;) I think you should teach Brooke about the awesomeness that is Pinterest. It would make those chats about outfits a little more fun, don’t you think ;) I bet Baby Gap has some nice options on there, ha!

Reply

you are rocking those miles friend! That is super impressive. You will have that sub 3 marathon in no time:) 6 weeks after I had my third, I don’t even think I could run 10 miles!
I can’t do fruit by the foot – I don’t like how sticky it gets in my teeth!
And I have avocado on my sanwich every day, and honey mustartd, love it!

Reply

I’m into the Lululemon headbands. I sweat really hard and those bands (I think I have the same purple one in your photo!!) are the only thing that keeps my eyes dry.

Yesterday, I also ran a 10 miler at about a 7:50/mi pace too, but mine was outside :)

Reply

-for lunch today I brought a turkey sandwich–I love putting hummus on it
-I ran 4 miles on the treadmill yesterday morning (at 5:15am–whoofta!)

Reply

Awww cute pic of you two :)

I usually use 3-4 bobby pins & a hair tie. Sometimes I use the headband thing but if I don’t want my hair to have the classic “i wore a headband look” I don’t. :)

Ran on the treadmill today. It was fast & sweaty!

Reply

Wow! You are so speedy Janae! Seriously, you are such an inspiration. Don’t think I’m weird, but I’ve definitely thought of you a couple times while I’ve been running lately. I can’t believe you are already SO MUCH faster than me and you had a baby 6 weeks ago. I want to be a fit mom when the time comes really badly, and that is motivation for now too!

Reply

Janae, you are doing great! Also, since I’m a librarian I have to ask… what are you reading? :)

Reply

I was wondering the same thing! I’m looking for a new book to read.

Reply

Ugh, having hair in my face when I exercise is the worst. I usually put it up in a bun and use a Goody headband. They have these rubber bits all over them to keep them in place. They work really well until they start falling off. Or if you have a small head like me, then I usually just get the kids ones and hope they aren’t so small they cut off circulation. ha. But the adult ones work well when I can’t find my smaller ones, so I just use two bobby pins to keep it in place.

Reply

I’m loving Bic Bands right now. They are cute and stay put!

I don’t remember what I would have in my school lunch. Favorite fruit snack? Fruit. ;-)

Treadmill = dreadmill. I just can’t do it. But I may change my mind come winter here this year. They are fierce.

Reply

Great job on the run! If I ever get under a 10 minute pace it will be a friggin miracle!!
Taco Salad = Heaven
Love Fruit by the Food and Gushers. Gushers…mmm.
Want to get a bic band and try it out. Any headbands I have tried either slip or give me a major headache.

Reply

Your fruit by the foot and 4th grade comments made me think of this.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/can-you-make-it-through-this-post-without-wanting

You will definitely want to go back to 5th grade or maybe just go by some dunk-a-roos and lunchables!

Reply

My hair is psycho. I have what I call “wings” in the front sides, and I look crazy all the time–especially when I’ve been working out. Sometimes I just embrace them because they’re too difficult/impossible to tame. Other times I use a BIC headband that I’ve had forever. It usually helps, when I can actually find one of the two I own, that is.

Reply

I seriously don’t know how you can run on a treadmill for that long. I ran 2 miles on the treadmill last night out of dire necessity and I just about died. I can’t stand it! I end up running slower and shorter. No wonder you’re so fast at marathons, your mental game is built up after miles and miles on a treadmill!

Reply

I think headbands are so cute, but tey always fall off so I stick with bobby pins. Awesome pace on the treadmill!

I have been so excited to tell you something. So I emailed you a few months back about running and getting pregnant and your reply was very helpful thank you! Then not to long after I found out I was expecting:) We are so excited. I wrote more about it on my blog so check it out if you get a chance.

What is your method for controlling your hair when you run? Headbands (what brand?), a million bobbi pins, you have awesome hair that stays back naturally? DEFINITELY SPARKLY SOUL HEADBANDS _ GOOGLE THEM – they are THE BEST !!!

What treats did you have in your lunch growing up? Any Fruit by the Foot lovers? Favorite fruit snack? LOVED APPLES – don’t like rubber fruit (sorry) and still love apples with almond butter !

What are your favorite sandwich components? TUrkey, avocado, tomato and light mayo – on Gluten free bread!

When was the last time that you ran on a treadmill? TWO NIGHTS AGO – it’s still humid and hot in MS – AND my hsuband came home after dark so I didn’t want to go after dark by myself :-(

Reply

My hair is so out of control I have to wear a hat, its the only thing that keeps it out of my face.
Growing up my parents didn’t allow us to have treats in our lunch but we could sometimes convince people to trade for dunkaroos mmm I loved dipping those little cookies in frosting so good!
As for sandwiches I love mustard, avocado and sprouts…the rest is just bonus
I did a treadmill interval workout yesterday morning, it had been a while and wow did I struggle! I think the lady beside me thought I was going to die.

Reply

I can’t really deal with headbands on a run. I have super long, thick hair that I wind into a braid (or two) and slap a hat on my head. I also can’t run with shades (I get headaches really easily) so the hat keeps the hair out of my eyes as well as sun protection!

I am loving egg salad sandwiches right now! With a lot of lettuce stuffed in there :)
Oh and I hate the treadmill. My jogging stroller is a godsend bc I can get my run in during the day with my kid.

Reply

Sweatybands!! Love them, as do my girls and their teammates!

Our treats were always homemade cookies!

Not a sandwich person — give me anything on a salad or platter, but don’t like the bread thing (nothing to do with carbs, either, just don’t like sandwiches which always makes lunch on the go a problem!)

Reply

I love the treadmill. I ran 14 on her this morn :) 10 at 7:50.. You are on fire!!!! Whoooo!!!!

Reply

Headbands or bobby pins, these days.
The last time I ran on a treadmill was on Monday, but I’ll be going to the gym tonight to treadmill it up.

Reply

Yay for finding the special headband! I normally just pull my hair back in a ponytail but with trying to grow out my layers I wind up with about half of it falling out haha.

Reply

I usually put my hair back with an elastic then my bangs back with a bobby pin and I’m all set to jet!

Nutty Bars were my favorite! And you HAD to break it apart neatly, then lick the PB before devouring the rest. It was a must.

I’d have to agree with you – turkey, guac, and avocado are my faves, too! :)

I’m not a runner (power walker), but the last time I power walked on the treadmill might have been last month. I prefer the track at the gym or around neighborhoods/parks. :)

Reply

I put my hair in a pony tail and then use bobby pins for my bangs. I hate having sweaty hair stuck to my face too – it drives me crazy.

Reply

My hair has to be in a french braid while I’m running – that’s the only way it doesn’t drive me crazy! My hair isn’t that long, but there’s a lot of it, so my ponytail is always too heavy and ends up falling down throughout the run. So I do a single french braid with a headband (I can’t stand it touching my face either) and then I’m good to go!

Reply

Love sweaty bands (at sweatybands.com). So pretty i wear them to work!

Reply

Head bands, rubber bads and hats. I wear my artist bandana when i paint. Usually tied up in a braided ponytail. Buns are too heavy and fall out.

Reply

i’m a fan of running with a hat on to absorb my massive amount of sweat and also keep my hair under control because i agree…hair touching the face while running…no thank you.

also, i miss dunk-a-roos the most from my childhood lunch!!! mmmmm

Reply

I absolutely have to have a hairband on when running, they are my savior for flyaways and of course keeping my bangs back!

Reply

First Brooke is so cute! Her little body reminders me of my two girls before one year, so petite.
Second, I did a super dumb thing, the middle of July, I cut off all my hair. So dumb, but I think I needed to just do it, so I could get it out of my head. So I am growing it out now and I use the lululemon Skinny Satin Pirouette headband. It is adjustable so it does not give me a headache and does not slip out because of the rubber stuff in it.

Reply

I’m with the other commenters on small-head slip off annoyance with hair bands, though they look so cute on everyone else, that I keep trying them out! I don’t have bangs, so a ponytail works OK for me usually, though I always run with a hat outside, and if I’m TM-ing it at home, I’ll wear a lameO sweatband to keep the sweat out of my eyes. I think I’m going to get some bic bands, though, after hearing so many enthusiastic reviews! Hoping they won’t give me a headache! Hat lovers should check out Headsweats brand – they have a sweatband in the hat brim that really helps.

Reply

I’m sure you must have heard of/tried Sweaty Bands? They’re not cheap, but they do work!
