The night life of new parents

Some things have changed (the fact we talk in baby talk 98% of the day) and some things haven’t changed (like going to bed at 9:30) since we have become parents (that still sounds weird).  Here is a little example of what us crazy cats do on a Friday night now that we are all responsible and stuff with a baby.

We go for walks around the apartments and I make Billy take a picture of me in front of a California tree.  I promised her if she opened her eyes for this one picture that I wouldn’t take my usual nightly 500 of her but she didn’t follow through with it.

IMG 3851

Then B, Brooke and I went over to the club house because they have a binder full of movies that you can rent for free!  Billy really wanted to get Wiggledancing but I wouldn’t let him.  I found at least 13 chick flicks that I can’t wait to rent for nights that Billy is gone studying.   Throw in some kettle korn and lemonade and I will be one happy camper.

IMG 3853

PS the blog may be a little boring after my MIL leaves because she is even better than me at constantly taking pictures and this one is of us putting our books away.  Billy has real books, I have cookbooks.  Since we don’t have nearly as many books as we do space, do you have any fun ideas of things we could add to make the book case look awesome?

IMG 3854

Have you tried Trader Joe’s pizza dough before?  I think it is like $1.29 for a crust and it is amazing and so easy.  Pepperoni fest with our little toy dog helping Billy out.

IMG 3857

We bought a cantaloupe at Target and we chose the best one by sniffing them for sweetness, my MIL is teaching me all sorts of tricks.  I think she is worried about Billy starving once she leaves because playing with Brooke is way more fun than making dinner and I have been known to eat a baked potato for dinner every night of the week.

IMG 3856

Last but not least we spent time on the deck spying on neighbors

IMG 3858

and trying to wake her up because we missed playing with her for a few hours.

my bookshelves have tons of knick knacks… picture frames, piggy banks, a jar of beach glass and shells… just whatever i like to look at!

i’m a homebody 90% of the time but sometimes i like to go out to dinner (or more likely go out for fro yo)

9 miles on the schedule for tomorrow! then next weekend it’s 20!

Looks like you had a great day! I’m excited to hear that the Trader Joe’s pizza crust is good. I think about trying it every time I see it there, but I never do–that will have to change. :) I think you should get a bunch of cheap picture frames and fill the empty space in your bookcase with photos of Brooke. She’s such a cutie!

About to leave on my long run. Is it weird I am already looking forward to lunch and a nap? I love the run, eat, nap ritual.

your pizza looks great. Now that might need to be lunch.

I ran for 20 minutes straight yesterday! I am working my way up to a 5k!

I cancelled my personal training session today in favor of a spa day..whoops! ALthough tomorrow is going to be an upper body session which I am looking forward to! Broke looks absolutely precious in that first pic!!

I am an elementary school teacher so Friday nights are ALWAYS Mack-Truck-hit-me kinda tired, and I might do yoga but that’s it! Or dinner and fro yo, max.

I never, ever make pizza at home. Pizza is so easy to order out, there are some things I just always buy, never make. I, too, look at that dough at the store all the time..might have to try it

I am taking today off running, even though I’m kinda itchin’ to go. Rest days are THE TICKET for me and I must force myself to take them, so today is one. Three good runs this week. I’m making progress on distance and pace.

I BEG of you to log your post-baby training running log here. Times, distance and paces so we can follow! I’m coming back to running after time off nagging injury and would love to see your progress as a motivator for mine!

That is so cute! Bookshelves are hard…but I bet you’ll have it filled with pictures of Brooke before I am even done writing this comment. :)

I think I just ate my weight in pancakes and almond butter to fuel up for my 6-mile run later this morning :)
My husband and I go to bed early every night, but get up around 5:30 most week days! Last night we were up watching Breaking Bad until 10:45 and were so tired it was hard to walk up to bed–we laughed about how pathetic most people would say that is haha

Looks like you are having an awesome weekend! I’m definetely more of a homebody, but am trying to cram as many fun things into this weekend before school starts. My exercise for the day is kayaking. Can’t wait. Have a good day!!!

Reply

I have a 2 mile race tomorrow at 10:20…in the blazing heat! Not fun…but still excited anyway since it is my first real race! :)
I would definitely rather hang out at home….but once in a while it’s nice to go out, with good company of course.
I don’t make pizza, because I eat gluten free….I should look for a gluten free dough to make since my hubby is probably missing pizza.

Have a great weekend!

My husband and I are homebodies. Although we are always up for a good bonfire and relaxing with friends!
This evening we are running the Tap ‘N’ Run 4k! Running with 4 beer stops should be fun :)

In regards to chick flicks, you MUST watch pride and prejudice with Keira Knightly. I watched it last night and my heart melted into my toes.

Ran 13 this morning and felt amazing! Marathon is in December :)

I could sit on the couch for hours so staying home on weekend nights suits me perfectly :)

This doesn’t apply to any of your questions but I HAVE to say that your blog is so refreshing! You never complain about anything, you find the “funny” in all of the chaos that is your life right now, and you are so darn cute! Your attitude is inspiring and so motivating. Although I don’t run (yet) I keep reading because I know I’ll laugh and one day I’ll consistently run because of you!

Love little Brooke! :) this seems impossible given how cute Brooke was the day she was born but it seems like every pic of her is more adorable than the last! Congrats to u and billy!!! :D :D

Reply

I’m going for 8 miles today!!! Will probably only get 7 in though lol

Either! But most the time I like to just chill at home with the bf or friends and family.

Whenever I make pizza I make the dough, only so I can add the juice from pickled jalapenos to my crust and sauce :D

Reply

You guys look so cute together in that top photo! That shade of yellow looks really nice on you and Brooke is completely cute.

I’m glad you found some good chick flicks to keep you company on study nights! You’ve got a lot on your plate, with the new baby, move, and Billy starting law school. Props, girl. :)

The pizza crust is good, so is their fresh brushetta…

I am LOVING all of these pictures of Brooke, please don’t ever stop posting them!!
I adore her cute little self, and her spiky hair. Like I said, I didn’t think it was possible, but she is just getting cuter!!!
Your apartment complex is really pretty- the porch looks really nice!
Hope you guys are having a fun weekend playing with Brooke!

Reply

Oh, the baby talk!!! We do it in public too, “I have to go potty, I’ll be right back”. Really???:) babies are so fun! Your apartment looks awesome – I do want to visit California!!
I did a long run today, 19 miles – not my best long run, but I got it done.
Now that we have kids, my favorite thing to do it stay at home, watch movies and hang out. Simple life.
Have a great weekend!!!

Reply

Sounds like fun to me, lol. As long as you all are happy and enjoying what youre doing thats all that matters. :) We’re low key too…would rather stay home and do something. We make pizza at home…not so much during the summer bc we don’t like turning the oven on (and were not allowed to have grills at our apt complex). I hada 4 hour training run this am so that’s about as much activity as I’m going to get today lol.

Reply

You guys are the cutest family! We’re stay at home people most of the time. If we go out, it’s to our friends houses to go play cards usually. Between our three couples, there are six kids, so going out anywhere is a bit crazy! Today we’re all going apple picking and then going to one of our houses to make pie. We do it every year. It’s a blast. I used to make pizzas at home, but I haven’t in a long time. I need to find a good crust recipe. We have some bookshelves in the kids’ rooms, and we use it for books and toys. We bought some bins and baskets to put toys in. Target has some really cute ones that are made out of fabric and look like animals.

Reply

Ran 13 this morning with my favorite girls. Felt great but thinking about getting new shoes. Maybe going more light weight…

Don’t really do homemade pizza but yours looked yummy, so I my need to convince my hubby to try it. Other than that our Friday nights are pretty similar. We love hanging in and relaxing after a long work week.

Reply

Ran 8 miles followed by a 60 minute Zumba class… And now I’m ready for a nap :)

While I do like going out on Friday or Saturday nights every once in awhile, I am turning into quite the homebody as I get older! I enjoy staying in with my hubby and relaxing after a long week. And if we are able to stay awake until 11, it’s a miracle lol. Kinda pathetic for a couple of 26 year olds :)

We don’t make pizza too often… My husband is Italian and pretty picky about his pizza!

Reply

I love the looks (and sounds!) of your new apartment complex! It looks like it has some beautiful views, a great pool, a nice fitness center, and free dvds to rent?! You can’t go wrong there! ;)

We’re all about making pizza at home… It’s super easy, delicious, and cheap! Now if only I had some TJ’s pizza dough. Jealous! :)

Reply

That TJs pizza dough is the best, we use it all the time!!!

I’m running 12 miles at some point this weekend…depending on an exhausted husband and an energetic toddler! We’re in every night these days…I’d love to go out for a change.

Reply

For the most part I like to stay home. I enjoy cooking every night and enjoying a glass of wine and taking it easy. We usually go out on Saturday nights so I always look forward to that.
Ran a 5K this morning and PR’ed AND got 2nd in my age group- WHAT?!?! It was a smaller race and this may be the only fancy plaque or award I get for running, but I’ll take it!!!
We use to make pizzas more often and we’d each personalize our own, but I haven’t done that in awhile.

Reply

Brooke is so adorable and I miss those early days with a first born. Mine is 6 now with two very active younger brothers!

I ran my first 8k race this morning as part of my half marathon training plan and completely nailed my goal of 11min/mile avg. I was really surprised when I placed fairly high in the women’s gender and 37 out of 70+ in my age group. Just started running this year for ‘mommy time’ and fitness.

Had to think of you this morning as I watched a bunch of people pass me at the beginning as I maintained my run/walk schedule – it was a mental game to win cause with 1.5 miles left I still had gas in my rank and was passing people like they were road kill. It was awesome. *and I made sure not to count outloud how many people I was taking out :)

Reply

NAE NAE!!!! little Brooke is so beautiful! and you are already looking banging. So happy you have a blog so I can know what you are up to each day in Cali! Miss you here more than anything, I can’t wait to see her in the running get up we got her! love you.

Reply

AH! I love Trader Joe’s pizza dough! I’m a pizza-at-home snob and will only use TJ’s dough, sauce, & organic mozz! YUM! I’m so excited for you and your oh-so-close Trader Joe’s. And maybe a little jealous ;)

Reply

Janae you look AMAZING!!!! That pizza also looks heavenly. One thing I have in my bookcase are little cloth storage bins you can get at Target for cute ways of stashing junk, but no one can see the junk that’s in them because they’re in the bookcase. I nail polish stuff in one and craft stuff in another :)

Reply

I love TJ’s pizza dough but I can never get it as perfectly-shaped as you. Mine always come out looking deformed. How do you get stretched out so perfectly? Also, that little toy dog looks like he’s eying that peperoni that Billy is holding.

Reply

My weekend run… thought I would test out my new compression socks today on my run. I’ve never ran in these and for some reason thought going for 8 miles in 80 degree weather was the right choice… my legs felt great but needless to say, I baked!

For bookshelves I am always putting out things that remind me of our family vacations. Sea shells are my fave! Try turning some of the books laying flat, some standing up, add picture frames…

Reply

I love that pizza dough from TJs. I always buy the wheat kind. It used to be 99 cents, but they increased the price…the nerve. ;)

Reply

For your bookshelf add some photo frames of brooke! My bookshelf has pics of my dog and fiance…no kiddos yet.
i am trying to get in 10 miles this weekend…the weather has been perfect!
We are making a pizza as I type this with banana peppers, feta cheese, sweet peppers and pepperoni =)

Just wait…by Billy’s 3rd semester that bookcase will be full! I have an entire bookshelf full of law books, commercial outlines, treatises, etc.

Welcome to parenthood! Prior to kids, I would never have dreamed of spending every Friday and Saturday night at home. Now, we rarely go out! We’ve turned into total homebodies and it’s just the way we like it. Plus, a LOT cheaper!

Attempting a run longer than 5 miles tomorrow! I’m still nursing an injury so I’m still hesitant on pushing too much.

Reply

Brooke is so stinking adorable! I could just eat her up. Congratulations!

I ate pizza last night. Unfortunately it was not homemade :( But it sure was delicious….

Reply

I’m definitely a home body. I’d much rather stay in than go out {although I like both sometimes} and I am saving my work out until Monday when I can go to the campus gym! {mi madre doesn’t want me to run in south campus by myself…}

Enjoy snuggling with Little Miss Brooke!

xoxo

Put little picture frames with shots of your favorite girl on those empty bookshelves! :) Maybe some of your family too so you don’t miss them as much.

Mmmm that pizza does look so good! Glad Billy had the help of the dog. LOL

Today I did my longest run of my life…17 miles!
I live in DC and ran through Rock Creek Park which is so pretty and there are a ton of other runners out on Saturday which is fun.
My husband and I are major homebodies…and we love it!
We would always prefer to cook together and watch a movie on weekend nights instead of going out.
We make homemade pizza almost every week and I ALWAYS use Pioneer Woman’s pizza crust recipe…it is SO good, SO easy and it never fails!

Reply

That baby is just so darn cute!! I love to smell babies little necks and smooch cheeks! Best mom job ever!!
Ran a half marathon (Top of Utah half)and my Garmin said 1:59 and the timer when I ran through said 2:00:40. We are rounding to just 2hours until the official time comes out. That is FAST for me and I’m feeling pretty proud. Shaved off 7 minutes from my last half in May. Driving to Logan reminded me of the Wasatch Ragnar and chatting with Billy, Ken and Heather all the way there. Great memories – you have an awesome and sweet hubby.
I don’t make pizza but my mom use to with her homemade dough recipe. In the summer she would put sour cream and fresh veggies on cooked pizza dough and we called it summer pizza. It is the best! I guess I better learn to make it.
California looks awesome! Enjoy!

Hi!

Today I added 1/2 mile to my run this morning and most of it was up hill. Talk about burn, burn, burn. I felt really good afterwards and probably could have gone another 1/2 mile too. : )

I really enjoy staying in with the family. Last night we went to an outdoor movie event near our house. They showed The Lorax. It was great fun. The kids had a blast.

And…I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Trader Joe’s pizza dough. It’s the best thing ever (and their BBQ Chicken Salad). We make pizza often and like to experiment with toppings. But the classic pepperoni is our fave. : )

Reply

Hey J! For the bookshelf, display all kinds of things along with the books. Race medals, pictures, fun decor items from home sense, etc. Place some books on their side & stack three or so, and then have some leaning against the shelf vertically (I hope this makes sense!).

My workout this weekend is a mix of walking, yoga, tabata (omg so hard but sooo good) and strength training. I’m throwing myself back into fitness! :)

My hubby and I are such homebodies. I love relaxing and staying home on weekends. & pizza at home is way better then pizza at a restaurant. You can add extra extra extra toppings!

Have an awesome weekend <3

Reply

Love bookshelves! You could totally put up some gorgeous framed photos of brooke, or some family photos. Or if like me you’ve kept your race bibs…you could frame them and stand them amongst the shelves. Your favourite races or your PB’s! :)

Reply

Our bookshelf also holds our DVDs and has a shelf for magazines, a shelf for photos, and then the rest of the space just has a bunch of knick knacks (and ok, toys!)

Reply

I just got back from T.Js with three pizza crusts. I’m going to make a grilled pizza for dinner tonight . I’m going to freeze the other two crusts. Ever tried that?
You look great and Brooke is a doll!

Your apartment is cute and I bet you love it. What beautiful scenery you have right outside your door, and is the weather absolutely perfect there?

I ran the Top of Utah Half Marathon today. My goal was to beat last year’s time which I did by about 2 minutes!! I was happy about that since I ran 4 and 1/2 miles BEFORE the race even started to be able to stay consistent with my marathon training. Ugh….this is getting challenging. Next Saturday is my 20 miler long run and then I get to start tapering.

In our bookcase we put picture frames and books sideways with a doily underneath and maybe a little decoration on the sideways books. I also have some willow statues on my bookcase and a ceramic piece. Just stick anything that feels good in there and makes you happy to look at.

Reply

I love knick-naks and have my bookshelf filled with them. I’m a huge Peanuts fan and when I got honor roll in high school my mom bought me this really awesome phone from the 1970s–which is what started me using items like that to separate genres. Now I have about 500 books, so those items sit in front of the books rather than in between.

Reply

Free movie rentals? Jealous! And that pizza you guys made looks amazing! We just got our first T.J.’s here in Albany, NY (YAY!) at the beginning of August and I will definitely have to get that – there are so many things I want to try there!
And tomorrow I’m planning on doing an impromptu half-marathon up at Turning Stone Casino. I saw a picture of the medals = so nice = wake up at 4 am to drive 2 hours to the race. I’ve never done race day registration before so I hope everything goes smoothly and I’m able to run!
Hope you guys have a good rest of the weekend! :-)

Bookshelf ideas: Hunger Games
I did 9 miles today. It was really tough and I was disappointed since my training this week was awesome. Oh well. Just keep swimming…
I would rather stay home most nights. Life is so crazy that when we get a chance to hang as a family the last thing we want to do is go out. Pretty boring but we love it.

Reply

On our bookshelf we have some photo’s/frames and some decorative items on the non-book shelves. I’m sure you’ll find somethings to fill it with! Ran 5.5m this morning, after a week of not running that much, it went well. Love making pizza at home and loading it with veggies. Also love that we can personalize it so half is mine and half is the hubs.

Reply

I love reading your blog! Our Friday nights are pretty boring right now, since we are training for a marathon and get up by 5:30 am. We had an 18 mile run this morning. Luckily…the weather cooperated for us…overcast and in the 70’s. The humidity was up, but bearable! I love making homemade pizza…tastes better than ordering it to me, plus, I can have as many toppings as I want and not have to pay extra! :)

Reply

We also just moved and I had my first long run in Kirkland, WA. I met some other runners which id good because I have 19 on the plan for next Sat. I glad all is going well for you, Billy & Brooke she is adorable.

Reply

Just wanted to let you know I ran my very first half marathon today! My husband and I did the Top of Utah and LOVED it!!! My time wasn’t anything to be impressed by, but I was just glad to finish, especially considering my training didn’t go quite like I planned. I am pretty sure that I am hooked now and can’t wait to do another one now that I see I could actually do this! So thanks for being an inspiration to me to keep moving :) And of course I went to celebrate with frozen yogurt and making funny faces afterwards in your honor.
PS You already know this, but you have hands down the cutest baby in the world, good job you two! Too bad I already know our babies will be bald rats!!

Reply

your little family is so cute! here’s a funny weekend running tidbit for you: i accidentally ran a half marathon this morning by getting a little lost on what was supposed to be a 10 mile run! haha

Reply

I love making pizza at home! I used to buy frozen dough but then the grocery stores stopped carrying it so I make it from scratch. My mom gave me a really easy recipe, 2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp of salt, 1 tsp dry active yeast, 1/2 tsp of agave nectar (or other liquid sweetner), 1/4 cup olive oil and 3/4 cup warm (but not hot) water. Mix with spatula/by hand until dough comes together. Seal in ziplock bag and store in fridge for at least 8 hrs, up to 2 days. This will let the dough rise. You can also freeze it at this point. When ready to use, just roll it out. This recipe makes enough for two crusts and is a great thin crust.

Reply

save the bottom two shelves for Brooke’s stuff. Once she starts crawling around you won’t be able to safely put your stuff there anyways.

I have vacation stuff including pictures on one of my shelves. Placing a book, cover out looks nice and takes up space.

Reply

I’m such a homebody so I would prefer to be at home any night of the weekend vs going out. I’m lame, ha.

We do make homemade pizza quite often. There is a crust at Walmart that is like .80 for one package and it is awesome – thin and crispy, my fav!

Reply

Such a cute little family! :) And you are one gorgeous momma! ;)

I really vary on staying in or going out on weekends. Usually Brandon and I stay home on Friday nights, and then we might have a date night on Saturday … which usually consists of dinner with senior citizens at 6pm, following by ice cream and home. We are super exciting people. ;)

Reply

We make pizza at our house all the time! My uncle has a recipe or we use How Sweet Eat’s whole wheat crust recipe. When my uncle comes in town from Kentucky we are having a pizza making competition!

Reply

I have a 16 miler tomorrow am :)
You should frame some of the pics of Brooke and put them on the bookshelf.

Reply

My mom said she used to wake me and my sister up to play with us too! She said she thought she was the only parent on the planet who ever dared to wake a sleeping baby! So funny! Your new home looks amazing. Hope you love it there : )

Reply

My workout was an awesome 25k trail race. So fun.
We never order pizza because I think home pizza is just as easy. I make my own crust but have it down to a science now.

For your shelves, I would get a few smaller boxes to use for random storage of Brooke’s toys. Keep them on the bottom shelves so she can access them. Babies love boxes. Then photos and trinkets next. You can put some books in stacks on their sides to make the shelves look fuller now. And when you need more space just put them in normally. Stacking by color makes it look like a design decision as opposed to just a shelf of books.

Reply

Bookshelves = great space for your favorite baby pics. I have one whole “bookshelf” with nothing but pics on it!

Reply

You guys are too cute! I vote get some little baskets to put on the empty space on your bookshelf – that way you can load it up with clutter you don’t want out!

Reply

Welcome to the world of mommyhood! I’m sooooo excited for you, and your posts make me think of my first baby. Super special! I’m excited to see her blessing gown!!!!

Reply

That bookshelf would make a great Brooke shrine wall with all of her pics! :). I ran 18 miles this morning, you can have half of them ;-)

Reply

I ran 20 miles all by my lonesome on Friday morning, then yesterday, I participated in the Color Me Rad 5k! I turned into a human Skittle!! I’m always sooo exhausted from marathon training, so my senior citizen tendencies have me in bed early. haha! your little family is so adorable!! fact: I’ve never been to a Trader Joes!!

Reply

Did 5 miles yesterday right on target pace. I find it to time consuming to make pizza at home. Others do it better than I do.
I would usually rather hang out at home with friends and make lots of yummy food for them.

Reply

wow trader joe’s pizza dough is so cheap! we make our own pizza dough at home usually, but if i had access to dough for $1.29 i would totally just be lazy and buy that. i sooo wish we had TJs here in Canada!!!

Reply

We love TJ’s pizza dough! I always buy a few extra and keep them in the freezer. Right now we go to the high school football game every Friday night since I coach the cheerleaders, but then Saturday nights are usually open. Last night we went out with friend to a local restaurant and then to a bar for some awesome music. I would say we go out 1 or 2 weekends and stay home the others.

You and Brooke (and Billy) are just precious!

Reply

We love trader joe’s pizza dough! We make it a few ways… goat cheese and spinach with red sauce, and bacon crumbles if we want to add meat to that. Trader joe’s has good sun dried tomatoes, and that is yummy on it too. Sometimes we make it with basil olive oil, which we got from Wegman’s (east coast) but tj’s may have a version of that too! Love tj’s and so glad you are learning the love too!

Reply

i’m not a parent yet and that sounds like one of my friday nights! i’ve had tj’s pizza dough before, but i prefer making my own. it’s super easy and i love letting it rise than punching it down…that’s the best part. if you want an easy dough recipe, let me know and i’d be glad to share. it’s impossible to mess up too which is one reason why i like it so much.

Reply

i love love love how ridiculously in love and over-the-moon happy with brooke.

Reply

I usually put a bunch of pictures and figurines on my book shelf too. Now my shelves are filled with books but there was a time when I didn’t have enough and that worked out well. I got some cute book ends and would fill the shelf up 1/4 or 1/2 with books and then put something else up there.

Sometimes hubs and I will go out to eat on Friday night but that’s about it. We are about to be completely broke after the baby comes so we’ll probably have to put a stop to that. We try and do stuff during the day on the weekends – errands, gym, golf, etc. – and then chill out at night by ourselves. Once the baby comes though I have no idea what we’ll do.

I walked five miles yesterday. Then my back was killing me for the rest of the afternoon/night. I eventually made a rice sock. Hubs was afraid I was having back labor, but I assured him it was just from the walk. Which is was.

My hubs doesn’t like pizza so we never have it. Before he came along I used to make calzones with Trader Joe’s pizza dough all the time. They are fun and fairly easy to make.

Reply

I really like hanging out at home most of the time, but it’s fun to get out too! I went to TJ’s yesterday and totally meant to get the pizza crust, but forgot. :(

Reply

I ran 9.43 miles this morning, I celebrated a friend turning 30 last night and I slept alot this weekend! I enjoy going out but I am also a homebody and enjoy staying in!

Reply

I was just thinking about picking up some pizza dough at TJ’s haha!

Reply

My boyfriend and I make pizza using the Trader Joe’s crusts all the time! Er, I should say that he does all the work rolling it out and I just pile on the cheese.

Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl! The photos of you, Billy, and Brooke are the cutest.
