I found a place that is actually comfortable on dry land. It took me 20 minutes to be able to get out of the foam pit but it was totally worth it to be so comfortable for a little while.
After an exciting night of trampolines (don’t worry mom, I only did a few back flips on the tramp) and balance beams we were starving. The group decided on Wendy’s and this is what happened when I was trying to get a beautiful shot of my potato and chili.
The second the camera comes out she gets in front of the lens. I am actually helping her to design her own blog and it should be up in a few weeks, you can read all about her latest fitness routines and her obsession with chicken nuggets and honey-nut cheerios.
While at dinner we had a long conversation about all of the myths that we were told as a kid, like the one where we were told that blood is blue when it is in our body? I was bored last night because Billy says he has to study for his multi-variable calculus final because I guess that kind of stuff is hard, so I googled all of the common myths and here are a few that I heard A LOT growing up. Click on photo for link.
Muhahaha reading this made me go into the kitchen and get some Starbursts.
Not gonna lie, I still kind of think the gum thing is true.
NOOOOOOOOOOO I am just going to pretend I didn’t read that the 5-second rule is a myth.
There goes my excuse to go without shaving my legs for 3 months at a time.
What were some of the MYTHS that you heard growing up or myths that your parents told you? What about health and fitness myths?
Do you chew gum? What is your favorite brand and flavor?
Does your significant other have a sweet tooth?
That foam ‘bath’ looks so comfortable!!! One myth–carrots are good for your eyes–not sure if this is a myth, but I don’t think carrots significantly help you eye sight.
I used to chew gum all the time, but its not allowed at work so I have learned to go with out.
My husband has a huge sweet tooth–I make 2 batches of cookies (minimum) per week (just for him) and together we usually plow through at least 1 gallon of ice cream/week….wow don’t we sound healthy;-)
Abby @ Change of Pace
I can’t believe you give billy a full 56 hours before eating his leftovers! I hope he realizes that is more than generous!
I still believed the cracking knuckles myth- I’m glad to know I won’t be more likely to get arthritis from my annoying habit!
My husband and I both have bad sweet tooths. It’s impossible for us to not have dessert.
Jenn@ Run It My Way
Hahaha well this was enlightening! I am guilty of believing more than half of those myths!! And the 5 second rule?! I live by a 2 hour rule… I’m guessing that’s not really good then?
SO jealous of the foam pit… I used to do gymnastics and I REALLY miss the pit!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat
Very educational post this morning! The foam pit looks like a blast!
A food myth that drives me bonkers is that you shouldn’t eat past 6 or 7 pm. I eat after dinner every.single.night! My body doesn’t know what time it is.
I really like the mint chocolate chip gum by extra. It’s fabulous!
My hubby doesn’t have a sweet tooth. He constantly ‘forgets’ we have chocolate, ice cream, and cookies in the house at all times. How do they do this?
I used to chew gum ALL the time, especially after news. But after I discovered that the majority of them had the aspertame, I tried to eliminate it. It seemed that it made me crave sweets or foods whenever I chewed it. Maybe that is a myth, but I know it was true for me!
This is so interesting. Thanks for sharing. I’m still somewhat convinced about the gum one but I guess I’ll have to believe you LOL.
Michele @ Nycrunningmama
HAHAHA. I’m glad the gum one is just a myth. I swallow so much gum =)
My mom used to tell my sisters and I that if we hit each other in the face while making a face, that our faces would stay in that position. LOL.
No!! He loves Hershey’s Chocolate Bars (with almonds) but has the self control to only eat A BITE!!! I definitely have about 90% of the sweet tooth in the relationship!
Heidi @ Idlehide
I love chewing gum. I make sure my gum has “xylitol” in it because it helps to prevent cavities:) (Stride has it for sure)
Laura @ http://runningjunkie123.blogspot.com/
Hmm…..myths. I think you just about covered them. I think it’s SO funny that we all hear the same ones. Where do these things originate?
A random note (altough not a myth lol). My mom once told me that “Gatorade was athlete’s sweat” because that’s how bad she thought it tasted, and I saw the commercials with the athletes sweating it out. I believed this until about 14. HA. How gullible. I could not believe people were going around drinking sweat!
My boyfriend does have a sweet tooth but he is more of a chocolate person and I’m not. Likes icecream over fro-yo. Cake over cookies…..so we don’t really rival each other for certain things. lol.
I chew any gum that is on sale….and has not been found on the ground. ;-) No 5-second rule there. ha!
Hubs did not eat a lot of sweets during the first few years but at times he NOW has more of a sweet tooth than I do…which is hard to believe even for ME.
Whew! I crack my knuckles and have since grade school….good to know.
I used to love those foam pits! I only did gymnastics for 3 months, and the foam pit was my favorite part (no wonder I didn’t become an Olympic gymnast!)
My bf definitely has a sweet tooth, but only for certain things: chocolate chip cookies and brownies, mostly, with the occasional craving for swedish fish. I will pretty much eat anything sweet, though!
My BF totally does NOT have a sweet tooth. I dont understand. At all. He prefers bacon and manly meat treats, haha. I would pass up bacon any day for cupcakes!
ha! this is great Janae! :) I believe the gum thing. It’s what I tell the kids if they swallow their gum. :)
the kids shouldn’t trust me w/their ice-cream. we were at Chuck E. Cheese yesterday & the boys asked me to hold their ice-creams while they played a game & their ice-cream WAS returned just a LIL’ smaller. :)
that gym looks like soo much fun!! xo :)
Beth (Running with the Sunrise)
Haha, I think I have a similar rule to your “56 Hour Rule” when I’m hanging out with my boyfriend, except it’s more like “I will eat whatever you have left over in your fridge, and also if you don’t eat that cookie in the next 5 minutes I will eat it, too.” :) Luckily he’s used to me eating everything I come in contact with.
Heather @ Run Eat Play
I hate when things fall on the floor and people eat them!! I think its so gross and my kids probably do it when I’m not watching!
I love those Extra dessert gums – the key lime and apple pie are awesome. But I don’t swallow them.
I have an insane sweet tooth, but my hubby could care less about sweets. That boggles my mind.
Cat @ Breakfast to Bed
If you flirt with the cop, you won’t get a ticket…
You’ll more likely get married and pregnant….trust me on this one.
Kari @ Running Ricig
Now I can’t think of any myths! I totally believed most of those, though.
Mike has a sweet tooth, but won’t actively get sweets. If I make them or they are in the house, though, he’ll eat them.
I have a major sweet tooth. Not so much for the boyfriend. I cook all the goodies and he usually eats them though.
Good post, yeah, I’ve heard all these myths before. The gum still kinda freaks me out. And the brain thing, I never believed this one. Your whole brain works together, just like your whole body works together! Its good to know the shaving one. I was kinda wondering about that one. Its funny, how we still talk about these and still say some of this from time to time.
Danica @ It's Progression
My husband does not have a sweet tooth at all but mine is practically out of control–this is good for when we order dessert because he has no problem giving me the majority of it :)
I would have to disagree with the gum one! My friend Meryl used to always swallow her gum as a child (she’s 27 now) and started to notice a pain in her stomach. When she went to the doctor, she found out she actually had a gum ball (from all the gum she swallowed) 3 in. in diameter in her stomach area. So she had to have surgery for it to come out! Crazy! I know!
That foam pit looks like soo much fun!
i have a huge sweet tooth myself and have actually found that chewing the Extra Dessert Delights Gum (my fav flavor is rootbeer float) helps me to steer clear of the office candy bowl…
IDK My BFF Jes
I was told all of those except for the brain one.
I love Polar Ice, but I don’t chew it because it messes with my jaw.
I can’t believe you have a 54hour rule? My rule is 24 hours. and has been named Marshall’s Law after my brother. At easter I give him 24 hours to start eatting his candy. If it hasn’t been opened, then I’ll eat it! Yeah, I know, best sister ever.
Chelsea @ http://prettyrunner.tumblr.com
I was told that carrots will help my eyesight, so I bad a butt-ton of them. My sight is very bad today, was told in 10th grade that I was on my way to being legally blind lol, maybe carrots actually make them worse??
Love Orbit. I only eat the peppermint flavor :) only one that won’t mess with my TMJ
Sometimes he does, but not very often. It’s me most the time that does, then he has to remind me there is other food out there besides candy and sweets lol
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries
That foam pit looks like a blast! My husband has quite the sweet tooth actually. I don’t know if I’ve ever met another man that potentially has more of a sweet tooth than me. We can be a dangerous duo when it comes to anything sweet! ;)
I have been to Skyzone, too! My husband got in invitation from Yelp to check it out (he’s a top Yelp reviewer, hilarious right?) for the day it opened – so we went. IT was a BLAST. I adore trampolines. I just jumped and laughed the whole time.
Myths that I heard growing up:
Well, my mother said they were rules. She said you had to be 18 to drink coffee (I still don’t like it) and she said it was illegal to sit in a car that wasn’t running. She said you could be arrested. So I never did! I listened really well. Probably too well?
Gum: I hate it. I will chew it for a minute after eating (xylitol, etc…and I work in the dental industry so I am all about some oral care!) and then out it goes. Hate.
Husband does have a sweet tooth!
Yellow Haired Girl
Wow. I still believed most of those! Especially the knuckle cracking (my worst habit!) and the gum taking seven years. Definitely would have believed them until the day I died. The things you learn from your fave blogs, hey? :)
LOVE the picture of Billy flying!
NOOOOO im going to pretend the 5 second rule still exists!! but i am happy that cracking your knuckles is a myth because I still do it all the time :/
Im a huge gum chewer…i’m a bored eater so it keeps me from eating when I know i’m not hungry. I go through way too many packs a week! my fave is the orbit sweet mint but ive been craving a pack of good ol’ bubbalicious recently…
kevin has a huge sweet tooth..mostly for candy. he can down much more then I can…but baked goods, i probably have him beat :)
That’s too funny — I went to a giant trampoline place last night too! (http://fat-to-fast.tumblr.com/post/28946359715) It’s a crazy killer workout! My arms are more sore than anything from trying to pick up momentum. I don’t know how I used to do that as a kid non-stop!
My favorites growing up were ‘don’t sit too close to the TV, you’ll go blind” and “if you keep making that face, it will stay that way forever!”
I’m not sure if anyone has warned you about what it will feel like to jump on a trampoline AFTER birthing a child. It’s not even a little bit cute.
You will be positive that your internal organs are hanging out the bottom of your shorts. This will seem odd since your bladder will DEFINITELY still be working hard to produce the urine that’s trickling down your thighs.
Sorry for the TMI comment, but no one ever told me about that before I tried it. lol.
AHHH I will definitely not be hanging out on the trampoline after the baby! PS nothing is TMI for me:) Thanks for letting me know!
My husband does not have a sweet tooth and if we buy pie and save him a piece (which he insists on) he won’t eat it for days and days. We finally learned to give him a deadline. You have until x day to eat this or it’s fair game. Otherwise it’s just not fair. He is a salt eater. I could care less about chips.
If Curly really did a blog..I would read it. Of course, I don’t sleep so I read anything. But she’s freakin’ adorable.
Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs
That foam pit looks awesome — so fun!
Love the common myth truths! Fun post!
Where was this foam block pit? It looks awesome!
Erin @ erinberries
I’m absolutely obsessed with Orbit Bubblemint gum. I chew at least like 6 pieces a day. Pretty sad.
me too!! I think there may be some addictive ingredient in that stuff!
Where do you find your cute maternity clothes/running tops? I’m surprised Fit Pregnancy hasn’t contacted you to model.
Hey Shannon!! I buy my tops at Old Navy, they are crazy cheep compared to every other maternity store. My workout tops are long tops from Lululemon that stretch out really well. You are so sweet! Hope you are having an amazing day!
My brother is like your husband. He puts a half eaten candy bar in the fridge because he just can’t finish it. What?? I’ve never not been able to finish a candy bar. I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear the 5 second rule myth too! ;)
WHO CAN’T FINISH A CANDY BAR?!?! That breaks my heart. Hope you are having an amazing day gorgeous girl!
Dani @ Run Daniella Run
Jess is just now getting a sweet tooth 5 years into our marriage…yep, nice huh?! LOL, I guess I’ll keep him now. I always heard the blood is blue myth and another was that if you drank coffee at a young age it would stunt your growth.
I usually chew Orbit because…I don’t even know why, I just grab it. LOL!
If you sit too close to the tv, you’ll go cross eyed.
Wait that isn’t true!?
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats
Omg I’d give something 24 hours in the freezer before I went after it! Haha
Who can’t finish their yogurt from yogurt land??? After I finish mine, I usually take the cup from the Fiance and finish his, even if he’s mid-bite. I don’t wait 56 hours. I’m just not that nice and I love my froyo!
Caitlin, we sound identical ha. You are right, 56 hours is just way too long!
Cathryn @ MyHeartsContentblog
The five second rule is totally true. But the sugar-rush thing is true too…you should see my toddler after his hair-cut-pack-of-mnms!!!
char eats greens
I remember doing gymnastics when I was younger and the place I went to had the best foam pit…and then my family moved towns haha. I was very sad to say the least.
The first myth that came to my mind was swallowing watermelon seeds, but you kind of covered that one!! Or the gum, as well. There are tons more I just can’t think of right now!! Any you going to pass onto your little girl?! ;)
My fave gum is PUR gum, which I just put a whole new pack into my bag!! I think my sweet tooth is bigger than my hubby’s – he actually turned down the last bite of my ice-cream last night. Who does that?!?! (I should add that he quickly changed his mind, but it was too late – I had already put the bowl into the sink and was washing it out!!)
Jessica @ Busy Living Healthy
I’ve heard all those myths! I’m also going to pretend I didn’t read the 5 second rule thing. I love gum & my favorite is orbit white spearmint :) I cannot believe someone would forget about fro yo. I have a brother that doesn’t have a sweet tooth, and I just don’t understand how we’re related! ;)
My dad always used to tell me that if I ate watermelon seeds, a watermelon would grow in my stomach! I was petrified for a few days, and then I realized it totally was not logical :)
This is funny!!! And I don’t even know your niece but her smile is so adorable it makes me smile too!!
AHhhh I’d love a foam pit in my house too! SO would my husband. This could be dangerous…. ;)
A myth about not swimming after eating is one I heard, but we ignored it. And we lived on. hah.
Say it ain’t so… The give second rule has to be true :)
Laura is Undeterrable
I used to coach figure skating and I had a particular skater with parents that were always terrified she would catch a cold in the rink. Um… it was 60 degrees in there. Not an ice box. Also? THEY WERE DOCTORS. I’m not sure the dad is qualified to cut me open and fix things if he doesn’t understand this whole virus thing.
My favorite myth – watermelon seeds will grow little watermelons in your stomach if you eat them. To this day I am still scared of the black seeds.
I used to think chewing gum would go to my appendix and be stored there! That’s what my brother told me and I believed it for the longest time. I chew gum all day long. My favorites are Orbit in any of their fruity flavors. My husband has a sweet tooth but it’s not match for mine. I always tell him that I don’t have a shut off button when eating sweets. I can keep eating them and eating them and never get sick. He gets sick to his stomach fast from them. More for me!!
Am I the only one having a problem with the blog? The first post for me is the one about the perfect carbohydrate. I have to click the links you tweet to get to every new post.
Anna, thank you so much for letting me know about the problem. I am going to have Billy fix it right now. Will you let me know if you still have the same problem tomorrow?
Anna – I’m trying to figure out what’s going on. It looks like you are one of only a few people having this problem. After you click on a link for a current post on facebook or twitter what happens when you click on the blog header to go to the home page? Does it take you back to the old post? Thanks so much for your help.
Beth @ Miles and Trials
I have a terrible sweet tooth and have to have something sweet every.single.night! Unfortunately I have now converted my husband to this same bad habbit!
It took my son until he was about 7 years old to learn to chew gum without swallowing it. I did use the “myth” to try to scare him into not swallowing it, but it never worked. He had a hard time understanding why you would just chew something and then spit it out, why not swallow it?!
Meghan Rene @ Uncooked & UnWalked
I ALWAYS rationalize the 5 second rule – because my fingers have certainly come in contact with bacteria as well – so it can’t be any worse, right?
We have a 24 hour rule for pizza :) If it’s not eaten within 24 hours, it is MINE!! Drives my husband crazy, but hey – I gave him fair warning when we were still engaged!!
Haha I like the Myths trivia!
I was told about the cold weather making you sick, cracking my knuckles will cause arthritis, and shaving will cause it to grow back quicker, lol. I still do the 5 (scratch that, 10 second) second rule if my food hits the ground…at least I only apply that rule at my apartment or my parents place, lol…not at a gas station or anything, haha. I think Billy should buy you a foam pit since you’re moving to CA. ;)
Dannii @ Hungry Healthy Happy
That foam thing looks amazing!! I could spend all day in that. Probably all day trying to get out of it!
Jess @ Blonde Ponytail
Random facts by the HRG! You always make me smile and I am ignoring the 5 sec claim as well–although it’s a given I ingest golden retriever hair on a regular basis.
I know you are going to miss your family, but I’m confident that Billy and you will grow even closer and stronger (is that even possible?!) in your marriage in CA. You will rely on each other for support and strength and it is only for 3 years! Then, you can choose a new adventure!! :) Love ya!
Interesting myth busters! I love reading those things.
I knew about the cold one, 5 second rule, and gum one.
However, I definitely still believe the gum one, it just doesn’t seem like it should be swallowed and ever come out…who knows.
I also will probably still eat my food off the floor…as long as its mine at home;)
Deirdre @ Oh Well Whatever
My husband will leave stuff in the freezer FOREVER and then I finally eat it cause he has forgotten about it and without fail he will suddenly need it that night and I am in big trouble. Hate that. There is currently a Yogurtland and Colstone Creamery cup in the freezer. So strange.
Kristen @ notsodomesticated
I always thought that cracking knuckles did cause arthritis! Good to know, because my knees crack constantly!
Hey Janae! I nominated you for an award that I received! The details are here! http://livingrunningeating.blogspot.com/2012/08/an-award-for-me.html LOVE following your blog!
You totally crack me up Janae! I love that picture of you in the foam pit! Classic!
Hey I just joined Twitter, follow me @SouthGirlRun, thanks!!!!
Woah, woah, woah. Blood isn’t blue inside us? I’m absolutely bewildered.
Another thing I heard is that bats carry lice. That was from my mom and I wasn’t sure what the purpose was cause its not like I wanted to see or touch a bat.
