Accomplishing a goal faster than I thought I would.

I wanted bread.  Bad.  We have gone two weeks so far without spending one penny on food (thanks to gift cards, my parents’ pantry, dressing up as cows and friends with awesome restaurant hook-ups) and so I was not about to break my streak by going to the store to buy some.  The only other problem was that we are all out of sugar and Billy said that my idea to put my swedish fish in the food processor to grind up into sugar wouldn’t work.  I found a recipe with four ingredients: water, flour, yeast and salt.

I went on to eat 1/3 of the loaf one piece at a time, topped with strawberry jam because that would just be wrong to eat something with ZERO sugar in it.  I used this recipe and it was really good.

As we were coming up with things to do last night we remembered that my mom had gotten us the Netflix disc for White Collar (still trying to catch up to the current season) so we went over there to eat random food and grab the disk.  Snap peas dipped into salsa and turkey.

Followed by a grape party at the counter with my favorite people.

DSC 2887

My mom knew that we would be coming over to get the disc from them at some point yesterday and so she had a beautiful piece of carrot cake (Utahns, it is from Magelby’s) waiting for us.  We had a few bites but we are saving the rest for this morning’s bfast because we already had dessert planned.

DSC 2882

Gift card success!  In case you were wondering… Cookie dough, gummy bears, marshmallows and graham crackers do taste good together.  People probably see my cup and think a 4 year old made it.

I really wanted to take our ice cream home so that we could eat it while watching our show but I got very stressed about it melting.  Billy’s engineer mind came up with the idea to turn the ac up full blast and hold them in front of the vents.  My arms are now sore from holding them in that position but I will do anything to ensure the right temperature for my ice cream.

Photo 2 1

Our goal was to go through one disk of White Collar between Saturday and Sunday so that we could mail the Netflix disk back Monday morning and get the next one asap.  I am proud to report that we beat our own goal and finished the whole disk last night.  Good thing we can hook up our computer to the tv because we sold our DVD player.

My new set-up is above.  The couch is no longer even comfortable.  I have to either be standing, walking, running or laying completely flat to feel normal.  One pillow for head and one pillow for my legs.

We are on a Netflix break. We had it for years and were Netflixed out! The last show we watched on it was The Wire…..so so good. I highly recommend it. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did.

I love baking my own bread. The only problem is I eat half a loaf. Warm fresh bread is amazing!

Reply

Your 5:36 mile is INCREDIBLE (especially considering the heat, trail etc) Seriously, your blog inspires me SO much! I am totally going to have to watch the Wire, thank you so much for the recommendation. Nothing in this world is better than fresh warm bread (except maybe a pr:)

I pinned that bread recipe because it looks so good and easy! You guys have some strong will-power to not eat that whole piece of perfect-looking carrot cake! I’d totally use the ‘eating for two’ card on this one to eat the ice cream AND the cake! We love Netflix and watched all of Law and Order on there, as well as The Civil War documentary by Ken Burns right now! It’s so good…haha yes, we are nerds! But when you run out of the office and arrested development and parenthood, you’ve got to resort to something!

Reply

You really have to try it and it was so easy. Don’t worry, I just ate the carrot cake now… 8 a.m.:) I didn’t know Law and Order was on their, thanks for telling me! We are nerds too and I am sure we would love that documentary. I have heard great things about Parenthood, thanks for reminding me about it!

I have a friend who would only eat ice cream melted…never understood how! I’m with you about the perfect temperature!

WHAT?!??! That is so weird!!!!!

Reply

I haven’t baked in awhile but I just found these awesome recipe for the kids – you make cookie dough and then flip a muffin pan over and form the cookie dough to it. After you bake it, they come out like little cookie dough bowls that you put ice cream in. I can’t wait to try it!

Reply

WE HAVE DONE THAT HEATHER and you HAVE to try it, it was the best thing in the world!!!!

Reply

Oh my gosh, that’s so funny, I love eating Fro yo sitting on my booty on my couch. Problem is fro yo melts faster than regular ice cream so I always tilt my air conditioning down and blast it full force! I won’t let anyone touch it either for fear of body heat haha.

Reply

You are so right about the body heat, I am sure that cost us a little bit of extra melt on the drive home. I am going to learn from you!

Reply

Yes, I have Netflix. I watched the entire season of Lost on there.. LOVED IT!!! I have a been known to snack through dinner as I’m making it. ~Nora

Reply

Why did Lost ever have to end? I miss that show so much!

Reply

We are in need of some new shows! Ryan and I ALWAYS have to have 2 shows on the go to watch at all times – a more exciting/ drama show + a short comedy. We did Lost + Scrubs for the past few months but we’re finished Lost (amazing!) and on Season 8 of Scrubs now.. I thought we should just start from the beginning of Scrubs again (I’ve watched every season at least 5 times and it’s still hysterical!) but Ryan said no. We’ve moved on to Dexter (disturbing for the first 3-4 episodes, but we’re hooked now!) and we need a new comedy.. any suggestions?

Reply

AHHHH noooo, I hate running out of shows too! We have probably watched the Scrubs series a million times too. We are BEYOND hooked on Dexter too and are waiting for the next season. I am sure you have already seen it but what about Arrested Development?

Reply

Way to go on accomplishing your goal! Yes, your yogurt looks just like my six-year-olds. ;)
I do use Netflix- my daughter just got Punky Brewster in the mail.
I’m baking a cherry banana bread today. Check my blog tomorrow for the recipe, if it works out.

Reply

HAHAH me and your six-year-old would be bff! PUNKY BREWSTER… good memories. I will DEFINITELY be getting that recipe off of your blog tomorrow, YUM!

Snacked my way through dinner, story of my life last night. Ate one thing about every 1/2 hour for 3 hours. I like eating like that sometimes though.

Made pancakes this morning if that counts as baking.

Reply

I really liked eating like that last night too! No big decisions, just eat whatever I feel like! Pancakes definitely count! Have an amazing day Erica!

Reply

Love Netflix! We have the subscription that lets us watch it online, not the disks in the mail. We LOVE it.

Also, that’s exactly what my froyo looks like. My bf, Bry, thinks I am crazy!

Reply

We don’t do the disks either, it is AWESOME! Um, can we please go for froyo together someday and get crazy mixtures together?

Reply

i looooove Farr’s!!

Netflix is the only thing we have… no cable or satellite, no tv even! (we live in eagle mountain where you can’t even get reception with bunny ears.) we jump from one show to the next. currently we are watching “friday night lights” which is SOOOO good! probably one of my favorite shows of all time.

Reply

Isn’t it crazy how you don’t even need cable etc with netflix (except for the Olympics). I think we are going to HAVE to start watching FNL because we hear it is the best. Thanks for letting me know you love it too!

Reply

Hugely impressed at you making your own bread. I sometimes make soda bread but that’s my limit.

On Netflix, try Luther, a British police drama. It’s amazing and it has my biggest Actor crush in it, he’s so handsome!!

We had bowls and bowls of watermelon here last night!!!

Reply

Watermelon and you didn’t invite me over?!? Luther sounds PERFECT for us and I guess if he is handsome…

Reply

We have Netflix but the last thing we watched was a full out Friday night lights marathon lol..it was fun! Last thing I baked was this “healthy” deep dish cookie pie fom chocolate covered Katie’s blog…she has some killer recipes! :)

Reply

Oh my goodness, I have heard that show is so good! Do you think I would like it? Good thing you mentioned it because we are in need of some good shows. Katie’s recipes are to die for, I want to try that cookie pie too!

Reply

Yes, definitely! My husband and I literally kept saying just one more episode, just one more,,,but it turned into hours, lol. And def try the cookie pie…I was a bit nervous w the beans but u couldn’t even tell…it was so delicious!

Reply

We’re not Netflix users. Maybe we will if we ever get Internet someday =)
The last thing I baked was German chocolate cake last night, yumm. I bake homemade bread often and I usually make whole wheat, sourdough, or my favorite cinnamon raisin swirl.
I love snacking through dinner!! I’d rather do that then eat and actual full meal…

Reply

that is pure genius to hold the ice cream in front of the a/c!!! i think i need ice cream today.
i made muffins two weeks ago. i bake about once per year so now i am off the hook til next summer!!
i am unfamiliar with netflix! all i know is that it is not as good in canada, from what i hear!
happy sunday, janae!

Reply

We love Netflix. We get them in the mail now instead of on our computers because the options are better. Just got through Hung and really liked it. Desert last night was watermelon!

Reply

We love Netflix and White Collar is one of my fav shows.

I remember when I was pregnant it took a pregnancy pillow, a regular pillow and a body pillow for me to get comfy. It was all worth it though.

Reply

i love me some netflix. just cancelled my dvd subscription to save a little cashola, but i watch a TON of shows on instant netflix. white collar is one of my favorites, but i also like to dip into old school gems like dawson’s creek and felicity. makes me remember how much fun it was being an angsty teenager…not.

also goodness that ice cream looks delicious. and i am not going to lie, i love your creative way to keep it cool. i often use my heated seats to keep food warm when i’m driving around. put it on my passenger seat and crank that baby up. not sure if it works but it makes me feel better about not letting my food get cold :)

I have such a HUGE pet peeve about my froyo melting, but my mother HAS to eat it at home. We compromised and brought a cooler full of ice and after buying our froyo we ran out to the car, put it into the cooler and brought it home. It was absolutely ridiculous and hilarious. And of course it worked.

Reply

Hero. I think my mind would explode if I tried to make bread. You go girl!

Reply

Don’t own netflix, but my bf has Blockbuster mailed to his house :)

Last thing I made was cupcakes. I do own a bread machine. I use to make a lot of bread not so much anymore.

I try not to snack my way through dinner, just so that I’ll have room for it.

None for me :)

Reply

I love Netflix! It’s so much cheaper than cable.

I occasionally make Hawaiian Bread. So good! But I make it in the oven because I don’t have a bread maker.

I did have dessert last night. It was the first time in awhile. I had Moose Tracks ice cream. My favorite!!

Reply

I recently watched the first season of Downton Abbey on Netflix. It was actually really good! I got sucked in really quickly and watched the entire season over a few days.

We only have the online-instant streaming Netflix but I LOVE it! I just finished watching Prison Break. SO good! (For online only Netflix it is just $7.99 a month.) I watch shows from my iphone at the gym when I’m biking, running or on the elliptical. It’s great!

About two months ago I started making my own Italian bread. I like to have fresh bread whenever we eat Italian food and it’s not ever convenient to unload 4 kids out of car seats to run in to the grocery store for bread. Making bread is MUCH easier. I have a simple recipe that makes 1 loaf and is the perfect size for one meal. I just make it in a regular oven on a cookie sheet and it comes out looking exactly like Italian bread you’d get at the store but it tastes way fresher!

Reply

Last thing I baked was short bread cookies with chocolate in the center. :) So yummy!

Reply

I always snack thru dinner cooking dinner :/ oh and my froyo cups ALWAYS like like a 4 year old made it. Just wouldn’t be the same without candy, fruit, and Graham cracker crumbs coating every inch of the yogurt!!

I may be trying this bread recipe. Ever since we got our Kitchen Aid, I’ve wanted to bake bake bake! Pies, cakes, bread, you name it. But laziness plays too big a part of my day to get it done. Ooops.

Reply

the ice cream vent system is GENIUS!!! your poor arms, though!

grape parties look like fun. i want to have one!

my parents have netflix, and so we always watch theirs ;) it’s a pretty good deal, if you ask me!

i made banana bread last week, with some old bananas that were no longer appropriate for regular consumption! it was my first time, and it was pretty darn good! definitely going to become a staple.

my brother and sis-in-law are in town from florida, and we had a bbq at our house last night! it was such a fun saturday night!! i made mint cookies, and they were deeeelish!

Love Netflix! We get it on our Xbox & are currently watching Sons of Anarchy! Love being able to have all 3 seasons right there for us whenever we want!

Reply

We have Netflix–I get the movies twice a week–sometimes more if we time it right. Bud likes to watch all the new movies, so I got rid of the streaming. Just watched The Woman in Black and tonight it’s John Carter.

I haven’t made bread in a while since we will eat it all at once. We are bread whores. I will definitely experiment on some different breads when it finally cools down here in Iowa!

Reply

We downgraded and only have the netflix instant play. I’m really missing the regular dvds we would get. While I wait for White Collar season 3 to come to the instant play, we’ve been watching Burn Notice.

Do peanut butter no bake cookies count as baking? Putting them in the freezer is genius-except that every time I walk past the freezer I pull one out to eat….If they don’t count as baking the last thing I baked was a coconut cream pie. I need to make homemade bread more often.

Our saturday night (and sunday morning) dessert was pb no bakes. My husband told me he doesn’t ever want me to add chocolate to them again-he’s converted to pb only.

Reply

We have netflix instant play…right now I’m on Pretty Little Liars.

I bake unhealthy bread sometimes.

I made some oatmeal chocolate chip cookie bars on Friday.

No dessert last night…but Friday we had an AMAZING 7 layer smores cake at a friend’s birthday party and tonight we’re going to a graduation reception…so more dessert :)

I can’t believe you went 2 weeks without spending a penny on food. Tips please? I spend far too much…
I definitely snack my way through dinner far too often. Sometimes I just can’t help myself.
I’ve been dying to try making my own bread, but the yeast part scares me slightly!
Do you recommend netflix? I’ve been trying to decide if I should get it or not…

Reply

my ex-boyfriend and i would use the car air conditioner the same way – but for melted candy. we called it the cool-be-que :)

Reply

that carrot cake looks so good!! :)

I’m proud of you for saving $$ these past two weeks on eating out! :)

I like to have a bowl of trail mix, cut up veggies or fresh fruit slices. ‘The last thing I baked was a homemade strawberry cake. I was inspired by Paul Deen…I was ironing & watching food network, printed out the recipe & my daughter helped me to make it the next day. sooo good!! I’ll have to make it for you when I see you again.

I’ve never made homemade bread but, have always wanted to. I should try it!! have a great day! hugs!! :)

We use Netflix streaming. We watched 3 seasons in one week when we wer terribly sick. I have a bread maker and have yet to use it. I love read tho.i should really read the manual. We hard carrot cake as well for a birthday party.

Reply

We are big netflicks fans and have seen a whole bunch of shows on it. The one that EVERYONE is talking about right now is Breaking Bad!
Ps we love White Collar. Neal is so cute!!! I think he is cuter in White Collar than in Magic Mike!

Reply

I always get stressed about my ice cream melting, too!!! I’d say about 99% of the time, I have to eat it where I bought it, because I just can’t deal with the thought of any of it melting before I get home!! ;)

Reply

I did the same thing with froyo yesterday! I wanted to take it home and eat it on the patio. Great minds!

We have netflix instant, but not the dvds. It’s still pretty great, though.

Reply

I love Netflix. We just finished watching Californiacation and we’re on to Dexter. Up next, Nurse Jackie and Curb you enthusiasium. We always like to try to finish each disk a night, but it’s hard sometimes (with 4 hours on 1 disk during the week).

I baked this over the weekend:
