The World’s Greatest Athlete

First off I want to say a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to my cutest friend Pam for her PR at the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon!!!

(Pam and I before Las Vegas RNR)

————————-

No pictures of food today because let’s see…so far I have had oatmeal for breakfast and I made Billy make me mac and cheese for lunch so clearly I am living the life of the healthiest runner around.

Instead lets talk a bunch about running and other stuff mkay?!?!

THE WORLD’S GREATEST ATHLETE.

DSC 1630

I am not going to lie, I didn’t know anything about the decathlon until reading this in the July 2012 Runner’s World issue but now I am beyond interested in learning more about it and watching it in a few months.

DSC 1632

Ashton Eaton (above) will be competing to join the US team for the London Olympics.  He took the silver medal at the World Championships last year!

“At just 24, he’s the greatest runner ever to compete on the decathlon’s world stage.  His times in the decathlon’s four running events–the 100 meters, the 110-meter hurdles, the 400 meters, and the 1500 meters–yield enough points to make him a contender in any championship he enters.”

I wonder how many hours a week you have to train for to compete in TEN different events…endorphin city!

————————–

PS I am beyond excited because one of my favorite shows is starting up again TODAY!

Screen Shot 2012 06 03 at 12 16 33 PM

It is on ABC but I will be watching it on Hulu tomorrow….this is what happens when you don’t have a job anymore, you count down the minutes till watching your favorite shows….oh wait, I did that when I was working too.

————————–

What Rock ‘n’ Roll races have you done?  Ever ran the San Diego one?  Did you know anyone that ran that one today?

Have you had a nutritious day of eats or has it been random like mine?

Are you currently training to get a pr?  For what distance?

Any other Extreme Makeover fans out there?

I’m from San Diego, so everyone I know did the race! I’ve done the half before. It’s a really fun race!
My husband made bacon wrapped and cream cheese stuffed jalapenos and bacon wrapped and cream cheese stuffed dates, so not too healthy around my house today (although I did 8 miles).
I’m determined to get an under 2:00 half marathon time in September!!!

Reply

Um can I come over…those sound AMAZING!!! I really want to do the half or full next year in San Diego, can we meet up? You have totally got that sub 2 in September!

I love Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition! I am so excited it is back on!

Today I have eaten a Power Bar, Power Bar energy blasts (run), bbq potato chips, and pretzel m&ms. Definitely not healthy but one day a week I let myself eat whatever I want :)

I have run Rock n Roll Virginia Beach, Philadelphia, and Portland, and will be running Seattle in 3 weeks!

Reply

Gotta love Sundays….anything goes! You are really loving the Power Bar stuff:) DANG, you have done a ton of RNR and you are going to do incredible in Seattle!

Reply

Awww. so excited for Pam! :)

oatmeal and mac & cheese sound divine. DIVINE.

Reply

You should have come over girl…I totally would have hooked you up with some of our delicious eats today!

Reply

Congrats to Pam! I just ran a 6 minute PR in the half marathon this morning. I am pretty high on life and running today!

Reply

A 6 minute PR in the 1/2…..holy cow Michelle, you are absolutely incredible. WAY TO GO!

Reply

Wow- congrats to Pam!
I ran the inaugural RnR Arizona in 2004; it was my husband’s and my first marathon!

Reply

That is so so cool!! They must have started early…it gets so hot in Arizona!

Reply

I did the half rock n roll in vegas last year (yeah there were issues) it was fun though. I had several people from my team in training group at san diego this year GO TEAM. this is my first race run/walking I have walked all my others so I hope to finish my half in less than 3 hours (yeah I know slow compared to all you fast folks but gotta start somewhere) which would mean taking around 1/2 hour off my last time.

Reply

Laura that is AWESOME!! You have totally got this and please keep me updated with how your upcoming races go!

Reply

My eating today is all over the place. Breakfast was egg & toast. Lunch was a piece of leftover pizza from last night. Dinner, I have no idea what to make or eat yet.

Reply

wow that is crazy fast! I haven’t watched that show, but I love Biggest Loser

Reply

The city my husband and I live in in Southeastern Wisconsin is having a street fair today. I LOVE street fairs. I didn’t know it was going on until we were coming home from church and the roads were blocked. I started out the day pretty well with one of my oatmeal muffin things and chobani but then it took a turn. I ate a donut after church then a cheeseburger AND nachos at the street fair. That is pretty random for me since I am fairly regimented with my eating. I am bumping my running up with this week so it’s ok right??

I am training for a sub 2:00 half marathon. I just started running about 6 months ago and have done 2 hm’s in that time. The first one I did in 2:06 and the 2nd came a month later and I did it in 2:04. My next HM is in September. It looks a bit more hilly but this one is actually in my neighborhood so I might do some of the route as training. I am a big giant baby when it comes to hills. I am working on it.

Reply

I did the half this morning so I’ve definitely been eating anything and everything. I PRed too, but nothing crazy fast like everyone else! 2:22:33 :) Next time I’ll get 2:1x and maybe someday I’ll come in under 2 but I’m not holding my breath. I kind of hated it, though. It’s such an ugly course, I’d hate to have run the marathon course which is just twice as ugly. For all that San Diego has to offer you’d think they could find something better than freeways and major streets with horribly slanted roads.

And omg I LOVE any makeover show. SO excited. I especially love when it’s all shoved in to one episode, it’s like Biggest Loser on crack.

Reply

Congrats on the pr!!! That is so awesome! Bummer the course isn’t prettier:( BL on crack… You are hilarious!

Reply

I love extreme makeover weight loss edition! But waiting to watch it on hulu as well. So much better with less commercials!

Reply

I’ve done S.D. RnR, AZ RnR and VA Beach RnR. I used to live in San Diego, so I know lots of people who ran it.

I’m shooting for a sub-3:30 marathon in November. EEEEK!

Right now the husband and I are making meatloaf with baked potatoes and roasted asparagus for dinner. Yum!

Reply

congrats to pam!

i PRed TODAY in a half marathon…..1:44:58! I couldn’t believe it, shaved 15 minutes off my one from last year!

Reply

15 minutes from last year?!?!? Holy cow you are amazing!!!! Way to go!!!!!!!

Reply

Omg I love the decathlon! Such a random but true story I swear… My sister dated the USA Olympic trials winner is 2000 for the Sydney games and he was actually predicted as the favorite but didn’t win due to various injuries. He was also a 2 x NCAA champion at Tennessee and my sister ran at UT and that’s how they met. They dated for a couple of years and broke up shortly after the Olympics. He was literally the best at everything basketball soccer track of course so cool to know such an amazing athlete. I adored him and he always played games with me and was so impressive At all things. He is now married I believe as is my sister but I always had such great respect for him.

I’m hoping to do the Pittsburgh RNR Half in August 2013!! Going to start working to get myself ready for next year’s Pittsburgh Half Marathon, as well as the RNR. Waiting for the school year to wrap up to really get into it!! (only two more days for that!) :-)

Reply

Congrats Pam! I am so excited about Extreme Makeover Weight Loss edition airing again. I love that show.

Reply

I’ve eaten a little better today, but yesterday at this time, my eats were identical to yours — oatmeal for breakfast and shells and cheese for lunch. Oh, I did have an apple too, so I guess that counts for something healthy :).

Reply

Yum, mac n’ cheese! Do you prefer stovetop or baked? My friends and I were having a lengthy debate about this the other day haha.

Reply

Aww…Thank you!! you’re such a sweetheart Janae!!! love you to pieces! :) run SD R&R w/me next year k?! :) :) :) xo

Reply

I counted down the hours until desperate housewives, but now it’s over :(. So sad!!! I watch the reruns on repeat on the treadmill, haha!

Reply

I did the SD RnR last year, my 2nd 1/2 marathon- 2:03. But this year I chose to do the Safari Park 1/2 instead (last month) and I’m going to do it again next year- great course. I also did the Las Vegas 1/2. 1:53
And I’m also planning on PR’ing next weekend at the Utah Valley 1/2. < 1:46
I'm also going to do my first triathlon in Sept. Kokopelli- in Hurricane. Getting my bike next week. :)

Reply

Ahhhhh we better meet up at the utah valley half!!!!!

Reply

As a long-time SD resident, Rock n Roll San Diego was my first-ever marathon. I ran 26.2 there in 2006 and was part of a relay team a couple of years ago. I’ve gone as a spectator for many years, too. Quite a few of my running buddies finished today, and I was bummed to miss out! (The challenge of having moved away. Boo!) But that race will always hold a special place in my heart. :)

Reply

RnR San Diego was my first marathon and it was a GREAT experience :)

I got a PR today! It was exciting because I did NOT train for it, and just decided to do the race 3 days ago. It was a 50k which is always unpredictable. I fell twice, but can’t complain!

Reply

Wow megan!! A pr on a 50k that you jus decided to do, you are my hero!!!! Congrats!

RnR Races… I’ve run the Country Music 1/2 in Nashville, RnR Vegas 1/2, and in October I’m doing the RnR St. Louis 1/2! I can’t wait for that one.

I’ve been fairly nutritious today. Whole wheat cereal with blueberries for breakfast, an apple with PB for lunch, and a big ol’ veggie stir-fry for dinner. It would have been healthier if I’d had brown rice, but I love me some jasmine rice with a stir fry. :)

I’m not technically in training mode right now, but I will be training for a PR in St. Louis. It’s so hot. :( I hate the heat. I totally bombed last summer and hardly ran at all, so it was basically like starting all over in the fall. I’m determined to just suffer through this summer, even if it’s a lot slower and fewer miles. Just so I can at least come out the other side and still call myself a runner!

Reply

Never done a RnR race – I’ve heard such mixed reviews so when I do one I want to ensure I am heading to a great locale!

I’m trying to be nutritious but it is hard when coffee ice cream is staring at you in the face.

Reply

Hey Janae! I’m on summer break as well and just wanted to see if you have any good reads to suggest? I read Mile Markers after I read about it on your blog and loved it! :)

Reply

I have done Rock and Roll: Chicago, Dallas, Philly, and St. Louis halves then New Orleans, Seattle, Washington D.C., Nashville, and San Diego Fulls!!!! Coincidentally, San Diego was my worst marathon EVER. I had just come back from China and got ill… my dad and I cancelled all our reservations. I went to the doctor for the first time in my life- they told me I would be over it in a few days. So we took off for San Diego…. Started to feel worse, sprained my ankle, and ran anyway. 90 degrees, and threw up on the front steps of my hotel mile 3. Then mile 9, 14, 17, and 21- then walked to the end. 5:05, when my standard marathon time is between 3:51 and 4:00. Great story, horrible race :)

Reply

I’ve run RnR Nashville and Providence. I’m running Philly this fall and maybe Providence again. Today I’ve had a wheat English muffin with PBS (per 5k fuel), banana, egg white omelette, Larabars and a turkey burger. It’s salad for dinner since I need to get in some veggies!

Reply

I saw this today and immediately thought of you!

I had no idea extreme makeover was on tonight! I’m hoping I’m not too late to still catch it….

Reply

I ran rnr San Diego this morning and I agree with the commentee that said it was an ugly course. I, too, being from s cal thought there are much prettier places to run in sd than uneven freeways…BUT this was my first half and came in under my goal so I am pretty stoked.

Reply

Yay, congrats to Pam! I’ve only done the Rock and Roll half in Nashville. And I don’t plan to do it ever again haha. Toooo hot and too many hills! ;)

Reply

I’ve never watched extreme makeover weight loss edition before but maybe i’ll check it out. I used to watch this show on A&E called Heavy. I think they are pretty similar. We don’t have cable so I’ll have to catch it on hulu too.

I’d like to PR at a half marathon i’m doing in October. We’ll see though. I’m pretty slow these days because I didn’t run much during pregnancy. The round ligament pain was to awful for me.

Reply

I’m thinking of doing RnR Providence in August! The only thing I’m questioning is the heat since it could end up being superrrr hot. I want to beat my previous half time of 1:39! My eats today were so random- from green smoothies to toast to cookies to flourless chocolate mini cupcakes (delicious) and roasted veggies dipped in hummus. Anddd topping it off with some strawberry ice cream while watching extreme makeover now!

Reply

What? Oatmeal and Mac’n Cheese isn’t ideal? Haha

Reply

I love that show and have it DVR’d!! :) Can’t wait to watch it :)

Reply

I had an indulgent day of food today! I had brunch with some friends at my favorite restaurant. And then those leftovers for dinner. So delicious both times!

Extreme Makeover is one of my favorite shows! Love the stories and all the hard work.

Reply

Love that outfit you are wearing in the first photo! Super cute.

My eating has been totally random today, I had a bagel, Indian food, and cereal. No rhyme or reason to it, must be because its Sunday.

Reply

I can’t wait to read that RW story! Looks fascinating. The only RnR race I’ve done is New Orleans, because it’s my hometown; this particular race is a great course, but otherwise Competitor Group events are kind of overhyped.

Reply

I run the San Jose Rock’n’Roll half marathon every year. I haven’t done the others in the series, but I would like to do Las Vegas one day.
I’ve had a semi-nutritious day. We had a bake sale… but I still ate plenty of veggies during lunch time.

Reply

I’ve done 1 RNR race – PDX last month. I’ll be doing Seattle this month. So far I can’t really say it’s worth the extra money. Breakfast and dinner were good, but lunch was a chocolate poptart, so… draw your own conclusions.

Reply

I’ve done the Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle every single year (there have only been 3) and am signed up to do it again this summer.

I ran the Newport Oregon Marathon yesterday, and got a new PR myself, though not as awesome as hers!

I love the extreme weightloss show! Awesome!

Reply

I’m doing my very first Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon in July and it just so happens to be my very first half marathon ever! I hear great things about the RnR running series so I’m pretty pumped :)

Reply

AHHH! I love that show!! I was sad when I looked it up a few weeks ago and no new ones were up. This made my day that it’s coming back!! =D I’ll be watching it on Hulu, too….darn the extra restless waiting day.

Reply

I’m training for a 10k pr at the moment .. I bet it – finally got under 40 minutes at 39.57.

!!

Reply

i fess up to not really following up on many other events outside of the distances, BUT since i used to live in OR u’d have to live in a bubble not to hear about how Ashton Eaton’s been tearing it up, the guy is amazing and so young too! i think it’s incredible to have such stellar abilities at such a range of events…since yea, with my coordination i can barely handle the left turns. ;)

Reply

I did country music RnR and didn’t love it:( I would give another one a try though!
I feel like I’m always training for a PR in the shorter distances, but long term I am training for a marathon PR in the fall. should be fun;)
I LOVE the extreme makeover weight loss and am so excited it’s back!!!
Have a great day:)

I want to do the Vegas rock in roll half marathon for my bachelorette party in December. No better way to start out a weekend of fun than with a run, right?! Lets see I am trying on wedding dresses today so I am trying to be a little healthier..However, I did sneak in a brownie or two :)
I am currently training for a 100 mile relay that runs through the night. Not really a PR more just a finish the thing!
I loooove the extreme makeover as well. I save all of my shows to watch when I am using the trainer.

Reply

I have done Phoenix, Vegas and Nashville. I would like to do San Diego.
I had a BAD day of eating, which included movie theater popcorn and milk duds.
I was trying to a 5k PR but life is getting in the way of the actual plan.
I would probably watch it if it was like BL.

I haven’t done any rock and roll races, but I definitely want to.

I’m going to start fall marathon training at the end of the month, so hopefully that’ll be training for a PR.

So far today all I’ve eaten is a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee.

Reply

I love that show!! I’ve dvred it.

Reply

I have to admit…I didn’t know what the decathlon was until I watched Keeping up with the Kardashians. And now, all I know about is that Bruce Jenner participated in it.
