A Last Minute Decision

I had all my gear laid out.  We were at my parents’ house about to go to bed (their house is way closer to the starting line and so we were going to sleep there) but at the last minute I decided not to run the race.

There is a big fire in our county right now (one of my bf’s had to evacuate her home) and the air quality is really bad in our area.  Even though I knew that up the canyon (where the race was) the air would be a lot better than it is in the valley I still didn’t feel comfortable running outside for 2 + hours breathing in smoke.  I can tell when my lungs start to hurt because of smoke etc and know when to stop but I can’t tell when my baby girls lungs hurt!  Not worth even a 1% risk.

My sissy DID run the 1/2 marathon and ROCKED IT in a 1:35:08!!! A huge PR (6 minutes) for her and she said everything about the race was perfect.  There were no lines for the busses, the scenery was incredible, the race started right on time and there were a ton of aid stations along the way and a few of them even offered shot blocks.  They also had a huge french toast bfast after for the racers.

Next year Billy and I will definitely be coming back to Utah to run this race!

You’d think I already had a child with all of the fingerprints on my computer.  Basically I am a child.

I wanted to get my run on and did 10 miles on the treadmill.  By the end I was so bored I couldn’t even see straight and I couldn’t help but question how in the world I ran a marathon on a treadmill a little over a year ago… my brain must not have been working back then.

I don’t even need to tell you this because I am sure you already assumed it but we spent our afternoon at Costco. I will tell you that we got another $5.99 pizza and the samples were extra delicious today.  I consumed at least 4 full popsicles.

Fluffy pancakes trump flat pancakes.

The other day I was listening to my iPod on shuffle and Jack Johnson’s ‘Banana Pancake’ song came on and I haven’t stopped thinking about them ever since. I had some eggs and cherries to go with my pancakes.DSC 2041

I don’t know how Billy turned down me making him pancakes for lunch but he did.  Oh yeah, he doesn’t like bananas and pancakes aren’t his favorite either.

He chose dinosaur chicken nuggets instead and made sure to organize them on his plate perfectly.

More Olympic Trials watching going on over here….DIVING!  I remember one time I jumped off of the 10 meter platform at a pool and I couldn’t hear after that for 4 days.  These guys are insane.

Hope you are having an amazing day!

Banana pancakes are definitely one of my all time favorite foods!

You are a boss and my idol for running a marathon on a treadmill!! :) I love “Banana Pancakes” by Jack Johnson & it makes want banana pancakes everything I listen to it. Haha :)

Yeah, I would choose dinosaur chicken nuggets over pancakes too. I’m not crazy about pancakes, but waffles I love.

Just finished watching the Olympics trials (while eating watermelon!), and wow! I was pretty impressed. I can’t even imagine diving 10 meters, but then again, I don’t know how to swim.

Enjoy the pizza!

Probably a good idea not to run. You made the right decision! Haha, Billy’s chicken nugget organization is hilarious!

Good choice re the race. At least you got a good run in anyhow!
I like Billy’s green bracelet:-)

I agree with Nicole – the picture of Billy with the nuggets is perfect. And now I also want pancakes. My favorite pancakes are from a great breakfast restaurant – they are two banana/chocolate chip pancakes sandwiched together with peanut butter, dollops of whipped cream on top, served with bacon on the side. The restaurant calls them King Cakes (after Elvis, of course), and they are heaven on a fork.

Good choice on forgoing the half. Does seem like a waste of a good carb load…nah, no such thing as a waste of a good carb load.

LOVE Costco pizzas. Do you remember back in the HS years when they made the pizzas too big to fit in a standard double oven? You couldn’t fully shut the oven door, it was always open like an inch. Heaven.

I think you made a very wise decision for both you and the baby. You’re already a good mama. :)

Sorry to say it, but Billy’s plate looks like a dinosaur slaughter. :-/

Sounds like fun! We don’t have cable so we have to wait to watch the Trials until they are online!!! Such a bummer. Costco pizza is BOMB!
P.S. I can’t believe you ran a marathon on a treadmill. You are CA-RAZY! In a good way, of course :)

Jack Johnson is the coolest, and his banana pancake song is a lesson to all of us men on the seductive art of making breakfast.

Good decision! Its a fine line with what their little growing bodies absorb and if there is any chance of a risk than why do it? There are so many half marathons in your future! :)

All I can say is, you are already an amazing mom. :)

(Tell your sister congrats from me, too!)

I would definitely have gone with the dino nuggets! I haven’t had chicken nuggets in ages, and those look delicious!

That answers some questions I had this morning. Soon after I finished I heard your name announced as finishing the half and I about crapped my pants ;D I could not believe that you could run it almost as fast as me when you are great with child!! I wondered why I couldn’t find you camped out at the french toast ;) It was a great race but so not worth risking inhaling any smoke. I didn’t notice any but it’s better to be safe than sorry!! Great job running 10 miles on the milly!!

I was going to go for a run today but I really didn’t feel comfortable with the smoke (and I’m not even pregnant!)… but I do have asthma. wahoo…. soooo it looks like I’ll have to push my run back til Monday and pray the smoke clears!

Great decision – very selfless. If you’re that selfless before you have a baby, you’re going to be AMAZING when you do :) I’m still learning the selflessness and my baby is two now!!!

You are already such a good mama :). And congrats to your sister! You both obviously have some super good genes making ya’ll not only gorgeous but super speedy too!

Costco pizzas are the best. Pizza and pancakes are definetely a top 5 food for all runners. I have tickets to every day of the trials (since I live in Eugene) and it was pretty awesome seeing Ashton Eaton break the world record in the decathalon today. I think you would also love the free samples. Chobani has a huge booth with every single flavor of yogurt (including the kid flavors) and they just give you as many as you want for free. I took advantage of that. They also put a huge Nike store in the middle of the stadium with all different kind of olympic gear!

Reply

That is the coolest thing ever!!!! I am so jealous of your trials experience and free samples:)

Reply

Good call on not running! I have 10k on the treadmill later and I’m already thinking about how to avoid boredom from creeping in- gah!

Reply

Wow great PR for your sister. Great decision by you and demonstrates how you are gonna rock as a mom. Lucky little girl already. And those pancakes look amazing……is 10pm too late to make pancakes?

Reply

Thanks so much!! It is NEVER too late for pancakes:)

that jack johnson song inspired my boyfriend and i to make the exact same thing last year! sooo amazing! we used to make them every saturday morning after going for our long runs! delish!!

Reply

I’m so proud of you, Janae!! I’m sure that was a tough decision, but I really think you made the right call! :) :) :)

Janae – I saw on the news about the fires in Utah and wondered if it would affect the race. Whoop whoop to your Sis for her AWESOME PR! Stoked for her! I’m so sorry you couldn’t run, but you are right – not worth the risk to your precious little runner:) I’m praying for all of your family, friends, and Utahians (is that what you’re called?!?!) and hoping the fires get outta there quick.

Um, those banana pancakes look amazing. Even though I aready ate breakfast, I may have to do round 2. YUM!

Reply

Please tell Billy I like his Silly band :)

Reply

haha! Mike doesn’t like pancakes either, but he’d totally go for dino chicken nuggets!

Sounds like you made the right decision for the race. You’re already being an awesome mom!

Wise move on not running :) Baby girl will be here before you know it and you will be back to running outside again soon! I am 27 weeks along and sooooo craving to sprint and run really fast and far…I think that is what I will do after I give birth;)
Oh and you always give me cravings I didn’t know I had!! Thanks for the foodie inspiration!

Have you tried putting ricotta cheese in your pancakes? It makes them extra fluffy!
