A food I used to love but now I hate.

My dad got to choose whatever he wanted to have for dinner last night and he chose to have a baked potato bar.  In case you are newish to my blog (I should just add this to my about me page) but I have a deep love for baked potatoes to the point that I get teary eyed just thinking about the good times we have had together.

DSC 1917

First we started off with chips and salsa.  Tell me you have had mango salsa at some point in your life.

DSC 1920

To go along with the baked potatoes with shredded chicken on top we had left over enchiladas from Saturday night, it was quite a random mixture of food but it definitely worked.

DSC 1918

I realized something very sad last night.  I don’t like tomatoes anymore.  I don’t know when this happened but it did.  I used to eat tomatoes plain all of the time, I could have eaten them like an apple back in the day.

As you can tell, I become very focused and determined when I am eating:

The End 29

I still like tomatoes cooked and in things like lasagna or in salsa but just not fresh.  Thank you all for listening to my latest struggle in life.

My mom picked up my Dad’s all-time favorite ice cream for dessert.  This is one of those things that if you come visit me in Utah I will take you to get to help bribe you to be my friend.  The BYU Creamery really does make the best ice cream no matter what you Blue Bell ice cream lovers say (I am just kidding…I don’t want to pick a fight with any of you over such a serious topic).

DSC 1923

Since dinner was so early, that left me plenty of time to go for round two of dessert (I only have 10 more weeks to say I am eating for two so please let me continue to enjoy it).  Warm apple pie with more ice cream.

While we are on the subject of pies, I have 3 goals to accomplish this week and one of them is to make a fresh strawberry pie from scratch.  Any good recipes…link or email away please!

Pretty sweet blanket right…that is my brother’s baby blanket from 30 years ago…baby blankets are kind of a big deal to us.

Eeehhhh I still sleep with my baby blanket. Ridiculous.
And I’ve made ice cream pie before…. Easiest and tastiest thing in the world!

Reply

You do…I think that is awesome!! Good call on an ice cream pie! What flavor did you use?

Reply

A baked potato bar?! That’s pretty genius!

Reply

Try it, it was incredible!

Reply

I looove tomatoes but I don’t know if I can eat them as I would an apple. For a second I thought you were going to say you couldn’t eat baked potatoes anymore- that would be BAD! I’ve actually never made pie before because the idea of making crust from scratch seems super tricky! Excited to see what you come up with :)!

Reply

I could never ever hate baked potatoes:) I am terrified of making the crust…we shall see how this turns out!

For the Strawberry pie! I just made individual sized strawberry pies using this recipe for the filling, the crust was made using this recipe: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2007/12/p-p-p-pie_crust_and_its_p-p-p-perfect/

They were delicious, if I do say so myself. As for tomatoes, I am neutral, though I do really like tomato sauces for pasta. I don’t have my baby blanket here, but it is saved at my parents’ house. Of course, I could never live anywhere without my Pinky, my teddy bear that my dad gave me when I was six years old. Pinky just turned 18! When my husband is gone, Pinky always sleeps in the bed with me.

Reply

Noemi!! Thank you so so so much for the links! The pictures made me actually drool! I love that you know exactly where your blanket is and that you still have Pinky!

Reply

Hm. I think the University of Wisconsin sells better ice cream at Babcock Hall. The butterfat content is so high that it’s not legally considered “ice cream.”

We clearly need an ice cream taste-off. But whoever could we get to judge?

Reply

I can already tell that Babcock Hall ice cream will win…the butterfat alone sold me.

Reply

I’m the exact opposite! Always hated tomatoes until about 5 months ago and now I all of a sudden love them for some random reason. I’m a Texas girl, so I’m all about the Blue Bell. It’s the only ice cream I really know :) And I actually still sleep with my baby pillow. My husband hates it, but when we got married, he realized that it wasn’t going anywhere, so he’s used to it now!

Reply

HAHAH So glad you stuck to your guns about sleeping with your baby pillow:) Enjoy tomatoes for me and enjoy some Blue Bell too!

Reply

Oh my gosh- this makes me want a baked potato with breakfast!

I have never been a tomato person- I’ve gotten to where I can eat cherry tomatoes or small bites of tomato in salad or something, but the texture just throws me off. I love the taste of them- I eat tomato soup like nobody’s business!

Reply

There is nothing wrong with eating baked potatoes for bfast. YES, I really think it is the texture that I can’t stand anymore!

Reply

BTW, have you read/ heard of The Lola Papers? I thought about you because I am highlighting so many good passages in it. I highly recommend it- I know you would love it!

Reply

I am willing to bet that my school could give BYU a run for it’s money. Michigan State University’s Dairy Store is known far and wide for our ice cream. We did start out as an agricultural college after all!

Reply

Ellen, I think we need to have an ice cream tasting contest hahaha:) Okay, I bet Michigan State’s ice cream is much better!

Reply

I love tomatoes so much. I definitely could eat them like apples. I’m so sorry you don’t like them anymore :(.

I don’t think I’ve ever had strawberry pie, but now I want some.

Reply

Eat some tomatoes for me mmkay:) GIRL, you will have to come over for some of my strawberry pie!

Reply

Love tomatoes, especially cherry tomatoes but hate ketchup.
Yup, a few times – pumpkin, key lime, and strawberry-rhubarb.
Eat lots of veggies this week!!
I still have a few stuffed animals, but they are packed away.

Reply

WHAT!?!?!?! YOU HATE KETCHUP…..ahhhhhhh! I will forgive you:) Okay, now you have me wanting to make key lime pie ha!

Reply

I know, it all stems back to a horrible childhood experience of a soggy ketchup and pickle sandwich…. haha

Reply

Oh my goodness…hahhaa yes you have a very good reason to not like ketchup!

Reply

Girl, milk eating for two all you can-it’s great! I took it a step further and we got pregnant when my daughter was 8 months old and I was still nursing. Eating for 3 gets you even more sympathy for repeat trips to the buffet and desserts!

Reply

HAHAHA How could I forget about that? Okay, eating for three is my number one dream in life:)

Reply

During culinary school, we had a whole 6 weeks for pies and other types of dough like bread. It was fantastic to bring home a pie everyday.

My goals for this week is to finish the second week of my half-marathon training. Thats the only goal I have, besides making it through work with a 7-tier wedding cake going out this Saturday.

Reply

6 weeks of pies and bread = heaven!!! WAHOO for half marathon training and a 7-tier wedding cake…I am going to have to see pictures of your finished product!

Reply

i kept a stuffed Snoopy dog i have had forever. my fav!
and i love love love tomatoes!!

Reply

I love tomatoes…especially on sandwiches.

I have made many, many pies…a couple of summers ago I sold them at our local farmers market. They seem much more intimidating than they really are. Crust even isn’t that hard once you’ve done it.

I have a bunch of house projects I want to do this week. I’ve just been lazy and haven’t gotten to them…in fact at 7 am this morning, I was making my goals for the week list.

I still have my baby blanket (in my cedar chest) and I gave my teddy bear I had had since I was like a year old to my 3 year old and he loves him :)

Reply

Tomatoes kind of freak me out–I prefer not to eat them unless they’re organic heirloom tomatoes. They’re the one produce item I’m that picky about–but for some reason, thinking of those waxy, flavorless, grown-in-a-hot-house-in-Mexico ‘tomatoes’ gives me the heebie-geebies. Plus, once you’ve had a fresh, local tomato, well, those ‘fake’ tomatoes from the store in December just won’t cut it!

Reply

I actually used to hate tomatoes and now I love them!
This week I want to bake something on my challenge list (I’m thinking either homemade croissants or cream horns)!

Reply

Baked potato bar as a birthday dinner sounds GENIOUS. I need to remember that, loaded baked potatoes have always been one of my favorite meals.
That being said I don’t think there is anything I used to like and now don’t. I think I would be really sad if I stopped liking tomaotes, although I coud never eat them like an apple.

Reply

I still have my childhood bear Mr. Gertrude Bear – he’s awesome! Once upon a time he was white (now he’s more of a greyish colour) and the dog is just itching to get her paws on the bear, but she knows she’s not allowed!

Reply

I love baked potatoes too! And the Bradley Method birth class I’m taking suggests eating a baked potato three times a week – best advice ever! When I lived in England as a child we would get “jacket potatoes” all the time and my favorite topping was cheese and sausage. So yummy!

I have made pie before – the crust is the hardest part. I have a delicious frozen strawberry pie recipe that I love. Usually I make pumpkin pie or apple pie around Thanksgiving. With just my husband and me, we don’t really need a pie on a random day.

I still have my Care Bear (Share Bear) that I got when I was three years old. I still love him!

Reply

Ew, ew I hate tomatoes! But I’m just like you in that I love them stewed, in soup or ketchup, but fresh is not appetizing.

Reply

ahhh tomatoes are my fave so my heart breaks for you a little…i especially love the little cherry tomatoes, sooo good!

i make a mean apple pie from scratch…I will def be making a couple of them this fall! i’m pretty good with pumpkin pie too. but ive never tried a strawberry pie before :)

goals for this week…try not to die running on weds and thursday bc temps are hitting into the 90s those days. hello early morning runs!

Love the idea of a baked potato bar! So cool. Sounds like a lovely Sunday :)

Reply

I like fresh tomatoes on occasion. Don’t really like them cooked. I’ve been that way forever.

I have made cream pies before but never fruit. Good luck!

One of my goals for this week is to ride the public bus. I’m thinking about getting rid of my car since I really only use it to go to the “city” twice a week…

I still have the quilt my grandma made me when I was born.

Reply

Ummmm Graham cracker ice cream sounds amazing! Even if it is from the creamery instead of AGGIE ice cream ;)

I have a recipe for the best banana cream pie. A REAL one, non of this jello pudding crap. I’ve never made strawberry pie. Just eaten it at Maddox :) good luck. Let me know when it’s done so I can come over for a slice!

Reply

Banana cream pie is one of my all time favorite things in the world….let’s have a pie party!! YOU IN??!

Reply

Oh I am ALL in! :)

Reply

I love baked potatoes too! So good!
I’ve made pies before, but I’ve never made the crust from scratch.
I could never eat a tomato plain, but I like it in other things. LIke salsa, or on a sandwich.
One of my goals this week is to cross train! I haven’t in so long!

Reply

I love baked potatoes–I could eat them every day, if my husband wouldn’t put up such a stink about how much he DOESN’T like baked potatoes.

I like tomatoes–I’m so glad it’s summer so I can get my hands on some really good heirlooms at the farmer’s market!

Reply

WHAT!?!?! How dare he not love baked potatoes, that is just rude! Enjoy your heirloom tomatoes:)

Reply

I have only made my grandma’s infamous apple pie! Let me know how yours turns out.

That ice cream looks divine. I haven’t had ice cream in a while and I used to eat it ALL the time.

Reply

Meghan, I think we really need to change the fact that you haven’t had ice cream in a while!

Reply

I love tomatoes with salt on them. yum!

My goal is to convince myself to go to this core sculpt class tonight! I went last Monday and literally could not walk normal again until yesterday! I’m debating if I’m willing to sacrifice another week of painful walking for this awesome class….

Reply

I love tomatoes. Well, any kind of vegetable really. I HATE ketchup though.

I have actually wanted to make a pie for a while now. I love to bake. My goal this week is actually to bake a little creation I thought of yesterday. White Chocolate Cake, layered with raspberry curd (which is just like a really smooth jam), frosted with lemon cream cheese icing, garnished with fresh raspberries. As a foodie, I’d love to know if that sounds good to you.

I still have a stuffed animal, it’s a purple bunny. My twin sister has a pink one:-)

Reply

Laura, what time should I be over to help you eat that cake? Seriously…that sounds like the best thing I have ever heard of. I must try it!

Reply

If you’re ever in the DC area let me know!

I’m going to try it this week. If it turns out well, I’ll send you the recipe:-)

Reply

For some reason I read this title like I was singing the song “Somebody I used to know”….. “Now you’re just some food that I used to love!”

Reply

BAHAHAHAH Now you have that song in my head!!

Reply

Mango salsa is SO good!!! And I had to enchiladas night on Saturday too! It was actually my first time ever eating them and making them. They are definitely one of my new favourites!

I`m a tomato lover! I eat cherry (or grape) tomatoes every day as part of my veggie snack.

Reply

I am a master pie-maker. I made a strawberry rhubarb pie yesterday for my dad!
I know there is a lot of controversy about the type of fat used in pie dough, but here are my thoughts: I always use butter and only butter. Shortening terrifies me- it’s so processed and gross! Butter tastes better, is easier to keep cold, and has a higher water content which means more flakiness when the oven heat hits it and creates steam.

Deb from Smitten Kitchen has the best pie dough tutorial for beginners: http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/11/pie-crust-102-all-butter-really-flaky-pie-dough/ and how to roll and crimp: http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/11/pie-crust-103-rolling-and-crimping/

One more thing- this is the best thickening agent for strawberries: http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/items/instant-clearjel-8-oz

Reply

AUBREY!!! You really are professional at this! Can I come take lessons from you?!? I completely agree about butters taste and MORE FLAKINESS!

A tutorial for beginners…that is exactly what I need and the best thickening agent, you really are the best!

Reply

Oh also keep everything COLD COLD COLD! If it’s hot in your kitchen, you can even pop the bowl and flour in the freezer for a while before you start! If the butter starts to soften, put the dough in the freezer or fridge to firm up. Make sure you chill the dough for an hour before trying to roll it out. Did I mention to keep it cold? Ha.

Reply

Thank you so much because my kitchen is hot!!! Maybe I will make it at my parents house so I can keep it cold!

Reply

I’m pretty sure I’m alone on this, but I really dislike tomatoes. I don’t even like them cooked. They’re basically the only fruit (vegetable?) that I don’t like!

I have a stuffed dog named Mutley from when I was a baby. My Dad even had to use stitches (apparently I wanted to see my Dad use his doctor skills) to sew his head and arms back on. Ha!

Reply

I don’t really like cherry tomatoes unless they’re smothered in ranch. I can eat other vine tomatoes, but only with salt, pepper, and a nice dousing of olive oil. Strange but true.

Reply

BLANKIE!!! I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Janae, please have mom ship to Arizona :)

Reply

HAHAHAH too late!!! I have already claimed it for my little girl. MUHAHAHAH. PS please get up here sooner. I miss you guys like crazy, stupid pregnancy hormones making me even more emotional than usual.

Reply

Funny about tomatoes…i’m 11 weeks and tomatoes have NOT agreed with my stomach lately, so have been cut out. Nuff said….. I have more food aversions than food I can actually eat! I made a pie once as a trial run for Thanksgiving – turned out awesome. Then I made the ‘real’ one for turkey day and it was a bust. Go figure!

Reply

I was the same way that first trimester…it does get better. PS CONGRATULATIONS…that is so exciting!

Reply

I have never like tomatoes, which I always joke makes me a bad Italian. I don’t mind it in pasta sauce, though.

Reply

After being spoiled with fresh tomatoes from my mom’s garden, I really can’t stand tomatoes from the store. The only ones that I like from the store are the grape or cherry tomatoes. The big ones….YUCK

Reply

I used to have a pound puppy that I always slept with (until I was about 23) and had it until our last move when my husband insisted that I throw it out because it was so dingy. I hate to say it but I get sad just thinking about it. How could I do that to the one thing that stayed with me my entire life. I am a mean person and I have to say the hubs is even meaner.

Ahh but I still love him, it was pretty old and it just sat in an empty suitcase so I never saw it but…… Ok I am just gonna stop there.

Tomatoes used to hate them and now I love them.

Goal this week…. get at least two bike rides in.

Reply

I like tomatoes, but I definitely couldn’t just eat a tomato plain. Too bland, I think.

Reply

Yum, a baked potato bar- looks delicious!

I love tomatoes any which way- send them my way- haha!

Reply

Tomatoes are growing on me. When I was younger, I did not like them. A couple years ago I tried them again and like them cooked, but not raw. Maybe one day I’ll like them raw, hey it could happen.

I have made pie before. Mostly apple pies and some ice cream pies (with cookie crust, yum!). I made an apple pie yesterday for my dad for father’s day. My hubby is in China, so he got his father’s day apple pie and cheesecake a couple of weeks ago before he left.

One of my goals for this week is to try a few new recipes. With my hubby being gone, I like to try out a few recipes so that I can work out any kinks before he gets back. Last week’s keeper recipe was grilled chicken topped with spinach and mozzarella, yum! This week is roasted cauliflower, blueberry muffins, and probably something else.

I have the outfit I came home from the hospital. I was a preemie, so it’s tiny!

Reply

Okay, now you have me craving a cookie crust ice cream pie so bad…YUM! Great job making apple pie yesterday! Let me know how the blueberry muffins taste, I might have to use that recipe! SO COOL that you had the same outfit from when you came home!

Reply

I only like fresh tomatoes when they are STRAIGHT from a garden. Or are in salsa or other hot food.

YAY for ice cream twice. That’s what Sundays are for, my friend!! :)

Reply

Growing up I hated tomatoes, but now I love (almost) all types. Except cherry tomatoes, too much skin not enough center yummyness.

I’m a big fan of blueberry rhubarb pie (my family calls it Bluebarb Pie) but I make all sorts depending on what is in season. :)

Reply

I’m sure its just a pregnancy thing- you not liking tomatoes. This hard time will pass.

Reply

Thank you so much Sarah…I think you are totally right:)

Reply

I have not made a pie from scratch before. It looks like a lot of work! Love tomatoes.

Goal for this week is to get in some bike rides. I’m starting to train for the New Mexico MS 150 Bike Ride. I have no idea how I will ride that many miles!

Reply

Here’s the strawberry pie I’ve made recently. http://www.reneweduponadream.com/2012/06/strawberries-are-in-season-picking-pie.html It’s soooo yummy but it takes a good 3.5 hours or so to make. Totally worth it though. Most of that time is the crust sitting in the fridge, not actual cooking time.

Reply

Oh my goodness…that looks incredible, especially the crumb topping! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Reply

I like fresh tomatoes to an extent. I like them in salsa, and I sometimes like them on sandwiches. But I don’t really like them in salads or just plain. I’m weird. ;)

Reply

What are your feelings towards tomatoes? Have you always felt that way?
When I was young, I hated tomatoes, but when I was around 20 I read that tomatoes are really good for your eyes, so I started eating them. Now I like tomatoes.

Have you ever made pie before?
Other than an instant pie, I haven’t made one from scratch before.

What is one of your goals for the week?
Workout 4 times weeks

Do you still have anything from when you were a baby? Blankets? Stuffed animals?
I have my stuffed teddy bear, named “Bear”. :)

Reply

I have made apple pies from scratch before and it’s not that bad! Just make sure to follow the recipe… :) The toughest part is getting the crust to look good. But who cares, you’re eating it anyways… :)

Reply

I still have my blankie and a tiny baby racoon stuffed animal :) It is just way to cute.

And I am not pregnant but I sure do not like tomatoes plain. I just cant do it. But my whole family and fiance does :)

and I have made some pies before but never a fruity pie… just a chocolate pies, pecan pies and pumpkin pies :)
all so yummy

Reply

I used to hate tomatoes, but now I eat them all the time.

I used to HATE tomatoes and now I randomly like them so I guess we are trading roles. ;) Baked potatoe bar is like the best dinner ever. Love it!

Random side not that has nothing to do with this post: I am so sorry Billy ended up in a van with all of the old guys. Eeeek I thought he was going to be with my friends Heather & Ken. I really hope you guys don’t hate me and think I’m completely nuts. Please still be my friend!!

Reply

OH MY GOODNESS…Billy had a BLAST! Seriously, he loved the experience and thank you so much for arranging that for him…we owe you! PF SOON!?!?!

I’ve grew up on Blue Bell and live in the great state of TX so it’s a staple, but I also ate 1,00o x my body weight in creamery ice cream during my BYU days. There’s a reason why my UT friends take Blue Bell home on dry ice when they can!
check out joyofbaking for recipes of anything sweet. I haven’t tried one that hasn’t been really good. Cupcakes, muffins, frosting. Just yesterday I made the apple tart- shortbread crust, cheesecake filling and apples. easy and really good.

Reply

HAHAHA You are going to have to bring me up some Blue Bell ice cream next time you come back to Utah:) I just checked out joyofbaking, thank you so much…I have a new blog to stalk!

Reply

I had a raggedy ann and andy blanket. That’s pretty boss.

JANAE! This really has nothing to do with your post, and maybe I should put this on your facebook… But oh, well (this is Lauren from Sumo, ps)! Today at lunch I thought of you. We have no food in the house, so I made what was available for Sebastian and me: Mighty Mango juice, 9 grain Great Harvest toast with a little cheddar cheese sprinkled on top, chipotle-sweet potato soup, carrot sticks, and I heated up Sebastian’s left-over macaroni and cheese with carrots in it from last night (at least the mac. n cheese was organic, low sodium, with no butter added… it’s not a health food, but I’m trying). The funny thing? ALL of it was BRIGHT ORANGE. So random. I gave no thought to it till it was made. But it all was delicious, and went well together! I was going to take a picture, but then thought you could try it sometime and take your own picture. Bon appetite, my friend!

Reply

HELLO LAUREN!!! It is so good to hear from you and I miss you so much! BRIGHT ORANGE makes the best type of lunch ha and I will be making that for myself:) How are things going for you?

BEST picture ever is the first picture!!!! :D
Ummm can you send some of that delicious looking ice cream to FL? My taste buds for ice creams have FINALLY come back…thank goodness!!!

Alex told me we are hanging out this weekend!! Yahoo! Bluebell is amazeballs and graham canyon is too. Your dad has great taste. In fact, we have some graham canyon in our freezer right now!

My family produced tomatoes all while I was growing up, and I liked them as a kid. Then one summer I worked in the packing shed and had to smell all the rotten tomatoes in the summer heat – I couldn’t eat raw tomatoes for quite a few years. Now we grow them in our garden and I love them!

Reply

I need to know what is in Graham Canyon ice cream…and then I need to go recreate it!

I love reading your blog!! You are so cute and I can relate to so much of what you say! (minus the pregnant part) (*someday*), but .. i had this same exact thing happen to me!! SO weird! I’m sitting here trying to remember what food it was, and for the life of me I can’t remember….(it was a few months ago) but I remember it was a food i adored and then one day I’m in my living room eating it, and slowly, i put it down because its making me feel yucky, and in my mind i’ve already decided i don’t like it..and I’m confused and hurt. haha. So i tell my boyfriend and mom about this new, strange discovery, and they don’t really care (or understand). But it was a BIG deal lol. i say that, and now i can’t even remember what food it was , but if i go to eat it and its in my mouth, i will know because i will take it out right away…hmph.

Reply

If you are breastfeeding, you will be eating for two longer than just your pregnancy!! :)
