A new NEED and speedy 5ks

And the snack of the week award goes to these lovely fishies:

There is just something so satisfying about these crackers. They are crunchy, salty and cheesy all in one tiny little fish.  PS in case you were wondering if it was just an optical illusion that half of my nail looks like it is missing, it is not….it hurt like crazy when it broke off.

This mornings workout was 3.67 miles on the treadmill.  I started getting a cramp and stopped immediately even though it bothers me to no end that I didn’t end right on the mile. I will probably do .33 miles later on today because I am ocd like that and maybe I will even do some weights if I am feeling really motivated.

After my run I was able to try out dry shampoo for the very first time in my whole life. I can already tell you that this will now be added as a NEED to our monthly budget.  How great will this be when I have my daughter and can prolong washing my hair for even longer because I will be so busy taking care of her.

Another awesome product that I can’t wait to try out:

One of my very best friends sent a picture of this and said that she is going to get it for us.  We have a scooter and now we can use it while it is raining and stay completely dry….genius invention.

Did you hear about PETE MAGILL?!?! He ran a 15:11 5k at the age of 50!!!

Screen Shot 2012 05 09 at 9 53 33 AM“Californian Pete Magill was dominant in the 45-49 age group; for example he ran 14:45 for 5000 meters in March 2011, three months before turning 50, to become the oldest American to break 15:00 for the distance.  He’s kept to his record-breaking ways since turning 50, including running 15:11.13 for 5000 meters at this weekend’s Oxy Invite in California.”

Isn’t that incredible?  Pete did mention some of the struggles that go along with being an aging runner:

I better be out running around until I am at least 103.

I love dry shampoo and it’s the best invention since sliced bread.I use Batiste dry shampoo. I wash my hair almost everyday and use the dry shampoo when I am in a rush but can’t be bothered to wash my hair in the mornings.

My snacks today are pears and cottage cheese..yumz

I HIGHLY recommend Batiste dry shampoo found at Sally’s Beauty Supply store. I’ve tried several (not the John Frieda one you posted though) and Batiste works the best and it’s about $5-7 so the price is definitely right. I lets me go an additional day or two without washing my hair.

Thanks for posting about my giveaway! So exciting!

My snacks today were Cat Cookies from TJs and a crunchy peanut butter thinkThin bar. PB and chocolate are always a good combination!

I have a think of dry shampoo in my bathroom but I think I only used it once. It never really made my hair look fresher. I think I’m spraying it wrong (if anyone could do that, it would be me) or not enough or something. Seems to work for other people though!

Reply

I’ve never used dry shampoo but you’ve left me intrigued. My problem is that I can never seem to not wash my hair after a run, it’s just too sweaty!

Reply

I’ve always wanted to try dry shampoo. Any suggestions on good stuff sold in Canada for a small price tag?!

Reply

I have used the cheap Suave stuff and even that works well.

Brace yourself for the dry shampoo…it’s a total game changer for me. I LOVE it! I have about a dozen different types, but just try it out and see what works for you. Time saver like you can’t believe…invest in a good shower cap!

I dye my hair blonde, so I only wash it with shampoo a couple times a week. My husband says that’s gross, but if I wash it anymore than that it becomes so brittle!! On the days I don’t wash it I usually put some baby powder on my hairbrush and brush that through so it smells clean. And now you know my dirty secret…. ;)

Reply

I want a scooter, but my husband says he is to scared of my driving to ever put me on one.

Reply

Dry shampoo is the bomb diggity! I usually wash my hair every 2 days. My favorite shampoo and conditioner is Amplify by Matrixx. I’m having a protein shake for a snack right now.

Reply

Snacks today: A Luna cookie dough bar (so good), blueberries with vanilla yogurt, and kale chips. And I might have Chai flavored oatmeal later tonight … so good! :)

Reply

Ohhhh i lovvvve pssssst dry shampoo…sure the can looks like it belongs in a 1970s dirty movie, but its the original dry shampoo…very cheap and amazing!

I want a snack…but too close to dinner? Nahhhh some cheese!

Reply

Love dry shampoo!! I use it often! I wash my hair every other day…sometimes in the summer I got 3 days if I can wear a headband on a lazy weekend :) live clean is my favorite shampoo and conditioner, sulfate free and they have a awesome baby line too!
Snacks today – an apple, some pineapple pieces and peanut-cashew energy bites.

Reply

I need to try that dry shampoo! I have tried a few brands but never was happy with the results. Guess it’s time for me to pony up the big bucks and stop buying the cheapo brands :)

Reply

I am going to try dry shampoo I have very thick hair I try not to wash it so much because it’s such a project!!

Reply

I bought my first can of dry shampoo earlier this week! I really like it.. haha though I’m sure it’s probably not the best thing, as now I think it’s ok to not wash my hair for a week… It smells great though! I’m also excited to use it after swimming, I find that tends to dry out my hair a lot so hopefully I can just rinse it or just condition after swimming and substitute dry shampoo for one or two days a week.

For a snack today I had soy nuts (great source of protein, iron, vitamins, etc!) but I find them kind of boring sometimes so I sprinkled salt & vinegar popcorn seasoning on them. YUM!!

Reply

You have to get that poncho! Will you be getting a side car for baby?

Wow, clearly I was too excited to submit my comment that I didn’t even finish it. I was going to say:

I’ve never tried dry shampoo, but I’d be interested to see how well it works.

Reply

I use dry shampoo all the time – the Psst brand. It actually works pretty well!

Reply

Um yeah I just wash my hair once a week. Seriously! I am ok with that tho and I should prbly use dry shampoo but I don’t ;-/

We have a motorcycle and deftly need that jacket cover up thing!!! We ususally use garbage bags and it is only a must that we have to go out because it freaks me out to ride in the rain.

Snacks, cottage cheese and crackers cuz I love it so much!

My shin splints in my left leg are really bothering me and they won’t seem to go away. Annoying!

Reply

I def want to try dry shampoo!! I sweat wayyy too much, so that’d be a good thing! And those fishies sound yummy for a salty snacky pick me up :)

Reply

Just had to go to Costco today and picked up some watermelon on your suggestion from the post from the other day. Wow! it is so delish:) The dry shampoo stuff is great love using it but for me I found out can only use one day not two days in a row:) Imagine that!

This might come across as rude but I swear it’s a compliment. I fall out of love with certain blogs all the time because they tend to get repetitive and I’ve been wondering why I’m so transfixed with yours because I absolutely hate running. It is my nightmare. I’m terrible at it and my joints hurt when I do it. I consider running a survival skill and that’s it. If a dog or a crazy person starts chasing me, I’ll run for my life or at least try to…although something tells me the first thing I’ll do is play dead so I can avoid running. Anyway, I realized what’s so special about your blog that has me coming back to check for a post several times a day. It’s that you’re kind of a mess and you blog about it which makes you so refreshing and real. By ‘mess’ I don’t mean ‘hot mess’, I just mean mess by blogger standards. Most bloggers wouldn’t dare to write about not washing their hair (the worst thing about sweating is having to wash your hair!), having their students drive them through a drive thru to satisfy a craving, or sitting around in sweaty gym clothes all day. You are a true original. Your blog never fails to brighten up my day.

Reply

Anna, thank you so much for your comment….you really did make my morning! I take being a mess as a compliment for sure, I want to be real and portray my life the way it really is on here and so this means a lot to me. Thank you so much and please keep in touch and let me know how you are doing!

Reply

I gush about you all the time to my sisters but I can’t say “Janae said something so funny!” because they look at me like “who the heck is Janae? Is she one of your friends?” and then I tell them about the blog but now I just call you the girl who loves running and candy and sometimes running while eating candy and they get it instantly. We think you’re an OG. I mean, the things you do and the way you can pull it off. It’s just so cool to watch. I hope I didn’t offend you even the slightest by calling you a mess. Believe me, I am a bigger mess. Take yesterday for example: I usually walk to work (it’s about a mile and a half away) and it started to rain really hard after school so I waited for the rain to stop for about an hour but it only got worse. I contemplated going to Wal-Mart which was a half a mile away to buy an umbrella but then I thought “umbrella’s cost money and I’d rather use my money to buy ice cream.” MISTAKE. Like biggest ever. Within minutes I was dripping and my shoes (do not wear vans when it’s raining people!) felt like a wet sponge getting stepped on repeatedly. My pants got so wet and heavy that it started falling off and I spent my walk holding up my pants so they wouldn’t drop. Right when I got closer to my house the rain stopped. Blerg. This is not even my most embarrassing story. It’s my most tame.

Snacks here they go…….and I love it cause I know you won’t judge :)
Doughnut.
Cheetos.

Reply

HAHAHA sounds like the perfect snacks to me:) How many more days until summer Erica?!?!

No dry shampoo for me. I wash my hair every three days. It gets oily if I was it more often. Right now my favorite S&C are Luxury by Kevin Murphy. They are awesome!

My snacks today were an orange, cheese stick and the thinnest slice of Snickers cake possible. It was for May office birthdays. I usually try to be out of the office when they have those celebrations. But I lucked out today.

I am seriously looking into getting ride of my car and getting a scooter just for the couple days a week I have to work a few towns over. It would be so much cheaper! Scooters are pretty popular here.

Reply

I need to try that dry shampoo! I wash my hair every morning – if I don’t it looks like a hot dirty mess.

My snacks today…a mixture of cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, and homemade strawberry jam; a tiny spoonful of cookie butter; a small vanilla cone from McDonalds (I don’t know if I’ve had one of these since college!). It’s been a sweet snacky day!

Reply

I’ve never tried dry shampoo. My hair is so oily I wash it everyday. I’m not sure if this would help or not.

Snacks: apple, orange, strawberries, Laughing Cow cheese (yum).

Reply

I have super-baby fine hair, and not a lot of it, so I wash every day. I have tried dry shampoo with the hopes I wouldn’t have to shampoo so much, but it really didn’t work for me.

I’ve gotten cramps before, but I can trace it to food. It’s extremely difficult for me to eat even a few hours before a run.

Reply

ADDICTED TO DRY SHAMPOO! I went through a bunch but I finally found a good kind at Walgreens by Got2B– it’s only $5 and it works just as great as the expensive kinda for 1/4 of the price….which is awesome because i go through so much of it!

Reply

I’ve never been able to use a dry shampoo. My hair just doesn’t like it.

Favorite snacks today – dried edamame and homemade larabars. Can’t get enough!

Reply

I use dry shampoo all the time. It’s a life saver!! Work was so busy today I didn’t get any snacks! :(… I was not a happy camper…
I don’t have a scooter but want one!!!

Reply

Never used dry shampoo… didn’t even know it existed!

For snacks today I had blueberries & blackberries, a banana & some veggie wheat thin crackers – they’re super yummy!

I get cramps when I run too soon after I eat… I’ve learned to never eat less than an hour before I run :)

No scooter… although I’ve contemplated getting one now that I only work 2 1/2 miles from my house! Huge savings over an SUV! But it couldn’t be used half the year in Wisconsin b/c of weather!

Reply

John Frieda dry shampoo is awesome (especially because they make a special one for brunettes) but I also have a Suave one which works great too!

Reply

Dry shampoo = my savior!!!! I eat pb as my daily snack! Yum. My dad is still a hardcore exerciser. I’m so proud of him!

Reply

Dry shampoo is the best invention ever! Anything that allows me to go longer between washes is definitely a win! However, I am in Florida right now and I need something to tame this frizz. It is out of control!!

My new favorite snack is grapes and cottage cheese. Wonder where I got the idea from?! All I can say is I am saddened I didn’t try it sooner!

Reply

My snack- greek vanilla/honey yogurt (oh my gosh- heaven) and cut up banana, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry in it. SO GOOD.

Then I had a piece of cake- but I earned it. I ran 8 miles today and played double header co-ed softball. :)

I’ve found that dry shampoo works best on clean-ish hair. I’ll spray it on before bed or before a workout and pat it in my hair. This way the powders in it can absorb the oil in my hair before it makes it dirty. I currently use the Suave brand which is only like $3 a bottle. It’s nothing amazing but it smells really good and I can get away with not washing my hair for an extra day or so.

Reply

dry shampoo is my absolute favorite hair/bath product. I don’t know how I ever lived without it; so obsessed. (maybe I should love soap or toothpaste?!) hence I only wash my hairs twice a week, maybe less with this month off coming up…
so glad you’ve discovered it!

Wow what an inspiration! That is crazy fast for anyone, let alone a 50yr old!
I too hope to continue running as I age. My pop ran quite literally until the day he died (in his 70s) and I would love to do the same.

Reply

Ok, I just got dry shampoo for the first time last week and I can already tell it is going to be a life-changer. I just got the cheap Suave brand from Wal-Mart but it has seemed to work really well for me. I used to wash my hair at least once a day and if I went a day without washing it would be super nasty/greasy, but I have been trying to wash it every other day more recently.

I love snacks… I’ve had a granola bar, fruit roll-up (which somehow had 2 grams of fiber?), an orange, cereal, and some smokehouse almonds (sooo good). I also have a watermelon in the fridge calling my name!

Oh, and I have always wanted to be an old grandma that still runs when she is 90 too (with my 92-year old husband by my side :). I can’t believe that guy is so fast at 50 years old!!! Amazing.

Reply

I had no idea that a 50 year-old man could be so speedy!! Thanks for sharing. I hope I keep chasing PR’s like that! :-) I am currently trying to beat my 5K time from pre-kids. I’m getting closer but still have a ways to go!

Funny you should ask. I just ran one of my first post baby errands to the beauty supply store to pick up another bottle of my fab dry shampoo. It is expensive but amazing, I’ve tried every brand, trust me. It is called furterer. Love. It is my single most importan post pardom product. Lol

Reply

I wash my hair pretty much everyday using Gud by Burts Bees. However, I rarely if ever blow-dry or straighten it so it hardly ever has heat applied to it. I wish I could go longer without washing, but it gets too sweaty.

My favorite snacks are Chobani Champions yogurt and Nature Valley or Luna bars.

Reply

I’ve been using baby powder as a dry shampoo substitute, but I think it’s time to upgrade to the real deal.

We don’t have scooters, but we have motorcycles. It’s much easier to park scooters and motorcycles at BYU. That was the only time in my life I regularly drove one, even though it scared the bejeez out of me.

Reply

Just snacking on bars these days… Larabars or the Perfectly Simple Zone Perfect ones. Also trail mix, but I can’t keep portions under control!

Reply

I’ve never used dry shampoo…something about it freaks me out a bit…you should definitely give a lot of input on what you think of it! I honestly wash my hair almost daily, that might be bad I hear? :-/

Reply

I prefer not using dry shampoo although it’s great in a pinch! Want to know a secret- powder does the same job, and it works out a heck of a lot cheaper :)

Reply

Yes – during a 15K I had the ibuprofen extreme cramping the last 5K of it. I had taken Ibuprofen before it bc of my sore ankle. Oops. It was excruciating to the point I almost saw a medic.

I am scared to try dry shampoo! I wash my hair every day or else it gets greasy – and I use Carol’s Daughter from Sephora – expensive but it adds time in between cuts :)

Reply

i couldn’t live without dry shampoo! i go through a bottle a week it seems like. the batiste – baby powder scent is my absolute fave! it smells so good.

Reply

Girl! Try DOVE dry shampoo! The can is bigger, it’s cheaper, smells better and works better than the John Frieda. TRUST ME. This sounds so gross but my hair is so curly/nappy (lol) i have to go a few days without washing it . Sometimes I take it to far.. lol.. so having dry shampoo is a must! anyway.. Try the drove.

Reply

I’ve tried a million dry shampoos and my current favorite is Suave! It’s super cheap too!

Reply

I have been thinking about dry shampoo! I just got diagnosed with a hairloss disease and my hair is falling out like crazy but ESPECIALLY when I was it. I shower at least twice a day and used to wash it at least once but I just cant anymore. It’s too precious:-)

I have the same breakfast:

3 egg whites scrambled with spinach topped with hot sauce and salsa
2 pieces of natures own wheat bread toasted, topped with Pumpkin Butter and sprinkled with cinnamon. OMG HEAVEN.

and snack:

1/2 a cup of greek yogurt with 1/2 a cup of diced strawberries and a homemade granola bar

But it’s time for my after lunch snack and you’re making my only think about gold fish:-)

Reply

Just got those whole grain goldfish and mixed them with some wheat things. Heaven.

Have you ever noticed that the first ingredient in those whole grain goldfish says “smiles”?? Thats awesome!

Reply

my snack of the moment is apple, pretzels, PLUS peanut butter. because i put peanut butter on pretty much everything.
i had rainbow goldfish the other day! the colors make them just that much tastier.

Reply

I second what Anna said, the moment I noticed your half nail I thought “WOW! How refreshing is that, she didn’t hide her broken nail!” I get so worn out by bloggers who try so hard to show that they only have positive moments in life–it’s BORING. I love that you show that despite the negativity, or hardships that every life has that you find something positive in it. It’s inspiring.

I only wash my hair like once every four days, if I was it more than that my hair gets really stringy looking and looks like I haven’t washed my hair. It’s really bizarre, I know. I use the John Frieda green shampoo (I don’t know the real name). All I know is that the bottle is green (it’s scientifically proven that no bad things can come in green….except maybe baby poo blow outs, but that’s for another ramble) and it was on sale (another huge plus).
