Triple Tangent Tuesday.

1.  Photo taken at exactly 8:35 a.m.  My mid-morning snack was eaten when most people are still eating breakfast.   Each day I start eating my snacks earlier and earlier and get hungry for lunch at ten.  Picture of bag after eating 38 wheat thins already, those are always the first to go and the pretzels are saved to be wrapped with string cheese.

Billy, I hope you are okay with doubling our grocery budget for the next few months…instead of 3 snacks a day, I now need 6.

2.  Before I get into this tangent, I KNOW I am not the best example when it comes to eating fast food and my ice cream portion sizes are out of control, but we are all working on things right:)

The unit we are on in health right now is nutrition and today we talked about portion sizes and fast food.  While getting the lesson ready I came across some crazy things about restaurants/portions etc.

Portion sizes.  20 years ago and now:

CBSNEWS.com said,

“This year Americans will spend over $110 billion on fast food, more than they’ll spend on movies, books, magazines, newspapers, videos and recorded music combined.”

“The typical teenage boy in the US now gets about 10% of his daily calories form soda.”

“American children now get about one quarter of their total vegetable servings in the form of potato chips and french fries.”

Runners World just posted a study talking about how people that ate a lot of fast food were 51% more likely to be diagnosed with depression compared to people that didn’t eat very much fast food!

3.  Exactly 3 more days until my spring break officially starts.  As I was trying to think about what to do I started wondering about what I did last year during spring break….I couldn’t remember but my blog remembers and because I am cool I went back and read through last year’s posts.

It went a little something like this:  Found out I had a femoral stress fracture, did a lot of weights with my sister followed directly by eating broccoli and cupcakes, went on a road trip with my sister, tried to heal my bones by overdosing on the calcium found in froyo, and watched Billy rock his baseball games!

I also cut out the sharing part on the swedish fish bag (so that Billy wouldn’t get any weird ideas that he could have any) after going to pizza factory and while watching Make It or Break It:

Screen Shot 2012 04 03 at 11 14 07 AM

I have a feeling this year’s Spring Break will be identical, minus the whole broken legs thing. I am still trying to convince my sister to take a road trip with me.

I never drank soda as a kid (maybe Sprite on a rare occasion) but became a Diet Dr. Pepper addict in college and still am. I don’t have it everyday but probably 2 times a week.

I always snack! My husband thinks its silly and that only kids should need snacks. He laughs at me daily :)

One fracture in high school years and years ago…..knock on wood!

I’m not much of a soda person, but once in awhile I crave the carbonation. I’ve discovered delicious pomegranate limeaid from trader Joe’s and I would rather get my sugar or calories from that!!
I’ve never had a stress fracture…thank goodness, but I am dealing with a toenail that I’m afraid of losing!
On a random tangent, I am craving cocoa puffs and about to have some.
BTW, it’s crazy to me looking at the portion sizes of food nowadays!!

My parents didn’t have cokes in the house. So if I drank any, it was through the vending machines at my high school and very rare. I used to be addicted to diet coke in college and decided to give up all sodas. I’m so glad I did, because I realized that if I have a carbonated drink now, I feel bloated and my stomach hurts. Didn’t eat a lot of fast food growing up. Ate too much in college. Now I try to cook more. I have a morning snack every day. I usually eat 1/2 cup of cottage cheese mixed with raspberries. It’s my new favorite! I eat lunch in between 11:30am and 12:30pm. I get grouchy if I don’t eat when I’m hungry.

Sitting in my doctor’s office, and after the obligatory knock, she comes walking in with her foot in a cast. Seems the good doctor got herself a stress fracture from marathon training. That’s how I know I had the best doctor ever.

Reply

I have a fear that I have a stress fracture right this second. How long did yours hurt before you got it checked out?

Reply

I waited about 2 weeks of stopping running and the pain still being there before I went in. If you are worried I would definitely go in!

Reply

PS PLEASE keep me updated on how you are doing!

I was diagnosed with a stress fracture on Monday. I knew it was more than just a normal ache/pain because I took a week off of running but was on my feet a lot for work (staffing a convention). It got to the point where even the though of doing the elliptical sounded painful. I went to see the doctor about 1.5 weeks after it started hurting and yup – stress fracture! :( Take care of yourself (try some non-weight bearing work outs), get it checked out, and good luck!

Reply

Oh Shanna, I am so sorry that you just found out you had a stress fracture. That breaks my heart. Keep me updated how you are doing!

No and no. We never had pop in the house and the only time I got McDonalds was when my grandparents took me. I also have never ate red meat so that helped to stay away from some fast food. But I always had a lot of home baking! I actually starting eating clean and healthier in College!
Yes I have a morning snack every day between 10-10:30am and lunch around 12:30pm and a afternoon snack about 4pm… haha. Every 3 hours I need food!

Reply

I just did a 2 mile run/walk and it was 90 freaking degrees out and oh my god my skin is still on fire and it’s on April. WHAT IS THIS?

Reply

I have no idea….I can’t believe the weather here either! Rehydrate after that run!

Reply

Can’t make it without a morning snack! Usually about 10:30. I always try to wait til 12:30 for lunch but I usually cave by 12:15.

I was raised in one of those health-nut families, so fast food was superduper rare but I remember chicken mcnuggets being like the epitome of a treat. Or Stouffer’s mac ‘n’ cheese…not fast food, but, yeah, it is. Same with cokes (as we call them in TX)–rare treat, and now, when I treat myself to a coke zero, I feel like I’ve won the lottery. It’s the little things…

Reply

We hardly ever had soda or fast food…every once in awhile, but not too much. I usually snack a few times a day now that I’m pregnant! I had a stress fracture under my left knee and ran a 1/2 on it…while I also had shin splints and a pulled muscle. Not too smart. Hmm…tangents about my day? It’s my birthday. :)

Reply

I eat my oatmeal as late as possible, which is usually around 8:15 when I think I might pass out.
Then I get hungry for my snake a little later, about 9:05!

Reply

I drank lots of Diet Coke especially during my junior year of college. Now I only drink it occasionally aka if I want to stay up pass 9 o’clock on a Saturday… My husband drinks a very unhealthy amount of Mt Dew though! While i’m getting my jumbo bag of apples from Costco he is grabbing the 36 can case of Dew, haha.

I do love fast food, although I almost NEVER eat true fast food anymore, but my hubby and I still eat out about once a week. Right out of High School I used to get a cheeseburger, snack wrap and fudge sundae from McDonald’s at least once a week (and that was just one meal)! How I did not weigh 3,000 lbs is a miracle. I can’t even remember the last time I got fast food now…

Unless I did a 10+ mile run in the morning before work I am usually okay if I just have a good breakfast. I am a night eater though. No matter how much I eat during the day I am starving when I get home and for the rest of the night.

Tangent: I’m making homemade blackbean burgers for the first time and I am very excited/nervous about how they will turn out!

Reply

I used to drink soda alot as a teen, but it was always diet soda. Now apparently you can get cancer or some disease from diet soda, too, so I honestly don’t know what I did to my body when I was young. I wish I could turn back time and give myself a lifetime supply of water to force younger me to drink it!

PS. I love that you cut out “great for sharing” on that bag of Swedish Fish. I should totally do the same with my boyfriend! I am not a good sharer when it comes to candy. Not at all.

Reply

I drank a little soda as a kid, but went really nuts on diet coke throughtout college ( I gave it up a while ago, now). We had a little fast food growing up, but not a whole lot and since being on my own I never have it.

I always eat a morning snack (or several). Definitely by 10am I have had a snack. Lunch is usually about 1pm.

Thankfully, I have never had a stress fracture (knock on wood).

Reply

That really is unbelievable how portion sizes have changed. I wonder if it is possible to ever return to those sizes being considered “normal.”

I don’t usually snack. However, I am living in Spain for the semester. They don’t eat dinner til 10pm and lunch at 3pm with only coffee for breakfast. Boy was my stomach shocked when I got here. I’ve gotten used to it now, but snacks never have tasted so good those first few weeks.

I love your blog by the way. I used to read it all of the time, and now I’m back:) Congratulations on the pregnancy! I’m so happy for you.

Reply

I ate a lot of fast food as a kid and teenager. I remember going to McDonalds and Burger King quite a lot, which is funny because I probably go to a fast food restaurant MAYBE once a year now. But I was one of those kids with a fast metabolism that meant I didn’t want to worry about my weight … not that that meant I was healthy, of course!

And I’m the same as you with snacks and lunch. Today it was all I could do to wait until 11:00 for lunch … and that was after a good-sized breakfast and a mid-morning snack! :)

Reply

I have a tibial stress fracture right now! I used crutches for 2 weeks and now am on my third week of wearing one of those huge black boot things. I know, its a really cute spring fashion statement…especially while in college. But i am hoping that when i visit the Dr. this week he will say everything is perfect and i can get back to running ( i signed up for a half marathon the first week in may and i am praying the Dr says that i can do it)!!!
The only soda i drink is diet coke and thats only every once in a while. I mostly drink seltzer water, i am addicted to it! I never ever eat fast food, it just never sounds good to me …but some of my friends eat it all the time. I guess thats what you would expect of college students.
For workouts i have been going to spin class like an addict. Its my favorite workout, second only to running. I did this spin to the core class today and it nearly killed me! Its an hour and a half and between certain songs you get off the bike and do really fast, intence ab workouts (like planks and other stuff). It was SOSOSOSO hard!!

Reply

HEY MORGANNE! I am so so sorry that you are struggling with your tibial stress fracture right now, that is awful. I bet all the girls at college are going to go out and get huge black boots to look just like you:) PLEASE let me know what the doctor says this week and keep on spinning. PS 1.5 hours of spinning, you are hardcore.

Reply

i was never much of a soda drinker as a kid. we could only have soda on “special occasions”. then i got hooked on diet coke in college and drank it like it was going out of style. thankfully i got over that addiction, and now i rarely drink soda. we had fast food on occasion when i was a kid… mostly if it was a busy night and my parents were too busy to cook. now i hardly ever have fast food except subway.
i almost ALWAYS have a morning snack unless i eat a super late breakfast (which is rare). i usually have my snack around 9:30-10 AM!

Reply

Did you drink soda as a kid/teen/college student? Kid, no. Teen, yes. College, yes. Adult, I have cut way back. Maybe 1 or 2 a month.

Did you eat fast food as a kid/teen/college student very often? Probably the most during college. Almost never as a kid.

Do you usually eat a morning snack? Not usually. Probably because I usually have a late breakfast.

What time do you eat lunch? noon or 1:00 PM

My tangent is I went into work to find someone else using my computer in my office. Second time in a week. Grrr.

Reply

Diet Coke was a staple for high school and college. Luckily, I’ve kicked the habit. I still like it on occasion, but it’s a treat.

I’m more snackish at night, not morning.

Reply

Oh man! Crazy stats about fast food. I didn’t eat fast food much as a kid and I dont do fast food with the kids. It’s nice now because there are some healthier, somewhat “fast” food options.
I usually eat a snack by 10, fruit and nuts or seeds. And lunch around 12:30, a wrap or something – avocados are generally included:)
I got a flat tire at the grocery store today! There’s my tangent – thankful I didn’t have any of my kids with me, that would have been really frustrating!
Have a good night:)

Reply

When I was younger soda was for special occasions such as b-day parties, we only had fast food when I went to visit my grandparents every couple months. The area I grew up in did not have any fast food restaurants. The closest McDonald’s was about 25 mins away :) haha. It was a huge shock when I moved to Virginia Beach from my tiny country town in England.
Now I love chick-fil-a!!

Reply

The portion sizes are soo true and crazy. I used to eat fast food and drink soda when I was younger, but I don’t at all anymore!
I eat like every three hours so depending on what time I have breakfast or when I go to the gym I have my snack. Lunch is usually around 12/1 again depends! :)

Reply

I am a Diet Pepsi addict. I have not kicked the habit, and since I work nightshifts and need the caffeine, I doubt I ever will. I do make sure to drink as much water in a day as I do Diet Pepsi. It’s not ideal, but it works for me.
I don’t have a morning snack, but we usually eat lunch around 11:30 so that we can get naps before I go to work. I always have an afternoon snack at work, and usually have one on the days I don’t work. When I started eating something ever 3-4 hours was when I was finally able to get my weight into the healthy range.
No stress fractures, and hopefully none in my future. I am having some problems with severe tightening of my left calf, though…
My tangent…I was up relatively early to do an interval workout, I got all ready, grabbed my Garmin, and even though I had charged it it had frozen. I had to reset it, lost a weeks worth of workouts, and then it needed to be charged again. Lucky for me, my kids are on spring break, so I just postponed my run for a few hours, then left the big kids with my little one and got my run in.

Growing up in Asia in the 80s, I hardly had any fast food and soda was later exposed to it all when I moved to New Zealand. I remember that our soda intakes were rationed by our parents and meals consists of fresh meat and veges. But it’s all changing now, children are being fed a plethora of fast food and processed food which is quite scary really. I hardly eat any fast food now because I just like them but I still enjoy a coke every now and then.

I hardly snack which is a bad habit but when I do it’s fruits, crackers or sushi.

Reply

I have my second breakfast before 9 a.m. too! Running in the morning really amps up my metabolism!

I rarely had pop or fast food as a kid. . . .I have it even less as an adult.

Tangent: one of my students (a 1st grader) told me I was starting to look like his mom. I asked him if that was a good thing or a bad thing. . .he said it was a good thing. Phew!

Reply

I never really drank soda growing up unless it was at a friend’s house and I never liked it. I have always been big on water.

I always, always have a morning snack- usually around 10 and then eat lunch at 12 or so. There are definitely those days when I have my snack early and then want lunch super early. It’s usually when I’m hungry from a long run so I just go with it.

I am very envious that you have a Spring Break. I wish my office could shut down for a week in the spring. Unfortunately I don’t see that happening so I will just use vacation time :)

Reply

I’ve never really had much pop! My mom never let us have it, unless it was raspberry ginger ale- yum! now I can only have a sip or two before I’m all bubbled out, though I LOVE soda water with fresh lemon or lime.

I usually have a handful of almonds as a morning snack, or a giant coffee.

Since I’m in Australia, my day’s just started! I wish I had something exciting to say for it! I am drinking a green smoothie at my desk for breakfast, and my coworker (former nurse) just told me it looks like the vomit that she used to clean up on the job. So that was nice!

Reply

!. You already know that Diet mountain dew is my addiction. The other parts of my diet are SO healthy except for this one. Is that why I keep it around, my one way to rebel against my own healthy lifestyle??

2. I am roadtripping with my sister for spring break, so I vote you do too with yours!!!

3. Getting up to swim tomorrow morning. Been loving the water for X-training.

Reply

Diet Pepsi addict as a teen/college student. Have weaned myself to about 3 a week now.
Midmorning snack…YES!!! Usually about 1045ish which is after my morning workout. Lunch is usually about 1pm.
Just had my first run after 7mths of no impact and physical therapy due to stress fractures of my right AND left tibia (spelling?)
My tangent today is about bringing my middle daughter to get two teeth pulled and then milkshakes followed by a trip to Target!

Reply

I have not had a diet dr pepper in 2 years–I used to drink 1/day until I gave them up for Lent in 2010. The last fast food I ate was an Arby’s roasted turkey sandwich in 2003!! I have to practice what I preach! ;). I have an amazing “Portion Distortion” poster in my classroom. It shocks my students. They are clueless about portion sizes, calories, etc. I’m currently teaching nutrition as part of the digestive system in my AP1 class. I LOVE it!!

Reply

Found out today that my hubby got a new job! It’s not like the one he had was bad… so it wouldn’t have been bad if he didn’t get it, but it’s been a happy day. I’m kind of nervous for change, though. We don’t have to move, but it will be a big change for our family.

I had a stress fracture in my foot

Reply

Did you drink soda as a kid/teen/college student? Did you eat fast food as a kid/teen/college student very often?

Soda–NO! I still don’t. I can’t stand the stuff, but I have an addiction to seltzer water :) Fast food–had it occasionally as a kid/teen, more so as a college student, but then decided changed it up. Now the only fast food I eat is Chipotle.

Do you usually eat a morning snack? What time? What time do you eat lunch?

Yes….whenever I can grab my cheese stick or nuts between patients. I eat lunch whenever I get a break between patients (sensing a pattern??) generally around noonish

Who has had a stress fracture before? Where was it?
They thought I had a tibial stress fracture but an MRI cleared me :) (I emailed you about it a few weeks ago)

Pretty please tell me some tangents about you and your day!!!
Ahhh tangents…let’s see. 1) I have decided that in WA the only reason we have rush hour is because it rains….seriously, when the sun is out (which is rare) there really is no traffic

2) I use a lot of ( ) when I type (I just noticed that)

3) I am super excited to sign up for the Marine Corps Marathon–10k but still cant figure out why they didnt make some distance between 6 miles and 26 miles….like say 13 miles or so

Reply

I didn’t eat fast food growing up except for rare occasions when I was staying over with a friend, and I ordered a cheeseburger with no Buber just lettuce cheese and bun…. I was a weird kid! Since I rarely ate it then it does not appeal to me at all so I don’t have it now either. I drank diet coke sometimes because my mom did, but I convinced her to give up the habit so we are diet coke free:). I’m going back to read your old stress fracture posts, and to look for advice on how to get into the swing of things once it finally healed. Femoral stress fractures are the worst, I have first hand experience too! Now I am just so scared to get injured again I don’t know how to get back to normal even tho it is fully healed (yay!).

Reply

I drank TWO diet cokes TODAY. And many more as a kid. That’ll bite me in the butt (or the esophagus) one day.

Also, I think this is you and your sis:

I don’t drink soda or eat fast food….I LOVE healthy, whole foods. SO tasty! But I do love ice cream, chocolate, and sweedish fish. Hah :)

I have to eat my morning apple at about 9:30 am or I freak out, haha. My lunch is at the super early hour of 10:53…therefore a snack is NEEDED by the end of the school day!

I was just talking with a co-worker the other day about how horribly I ate in high school. I ate my fair share of fast food, but my typical cafeteria lunch was a turkey croissant sandwich, a gigantic chocolate chip muffin, and french fries. Delicious, but gross at the same time.

My tangent? I am a language arts teacher, but I am horrible at Words with Friends…embarrassing!

Reply

Fast food restaurants got visited more than my parents would have liked, I think. I was very active in sports so we were gone to a different city every weekend in various tournaments … after being on the road all day, or playing your heart out (for them, cheering their hearts out) I think my family just craved something easy. So burgers usually happened before we made the long drive back home from wherever we were. Not always the best, but that was life for us back then…now I know I that I will pack healthy meals and snacks for my kids when they hit that stage in their lives (when I have kids haha).

Reply

Wow, that statistic about kids and vegetables is really, really sad. Fortunately I was raised by a health nut who did not feed us soda. When I started drinking diet coke in college, my mother was so horrified that she threatening to disown me. (Kidding, kind of.) I’ve since tried to cut back and only drink diet coke a couple of times per month.

Reply

I meant to type threatened, not threatening. She might actually disown me if she saw how bad my spelling is!

In my youth I totally drank sodas and ate fast food. We take advantage of our metabolism and don’t think twice about it as children/teenagers. I’ll be 30 this October and am the healthiest I’ve been in my entire adult life!

I’ve read some of those facts before and they don’t get any easier to swallow. It’s sort of sad what we’ll feed our children just to save some time or whatever the reason might be at the time. I think this is why other countries label us as the fattest country of “yanks”. Thanks for doing what you do and sharing it with everyone along the way. Great read :D

Oh, and I snack on a Clif bar at about 8am. Lately(the past 4 months) I’ve been bringing 2 bananas and an orange everyday. Love it! Happy Tuesday!

Reply

My favoriteeee snack during the day is a sweet potatoe with a vanilla chobani and cinnamon on top (more like a meal :). Just coming off of a tibial stress fx. 1 mile every other day as long as its “pain free”. I miss the high mileage. Hope you are well pretty girl. I’m so excited for the joy and happiness you are experiencing through your pregnancy. You are such a sweetie !!

Reply

I ate fast food but not too much. That’s so sad about how much soda kids are drinking…and potato chips & fries should not count as a vegetable…oh America…

Reply

I hated it back then, but now I can appreciate that my parents rarely ever got or took us out for fast food!

Loooooove Swedish Fish!!

Reply

Not a huuuuge amount of fast food – maybe once or twice a fortnight. Despite this, I was still a really overweight kid/teen. I ate good, nutritious food (mostly), but far too much of it considering I was totally inactive.

My morning snack usually happens between 10:30-11:30. Lunch is usually 1:30 or so.

I ran my first marathon with stress fractures in both feet. Smart move? UHHH NO. But oh well, what’s done is done. I’ve struggled with them recurring ever since – if I ever try to increase distances/pace/frequency too quickly, they come back to bite me. I’m going to work with my personal trainer (aka boyfriend) to improve my form to hopefully minimise the likelihood of getting them again (i feel like one has borderline developed/is about to develop in one foot already :\ so am taking a break from running for a while). Stress fractures are just an alternative spelling of ‘Satan’.

I had a stress fracture in my hip. Worst thing in the world, had to take off 5 months ugh!!!

Just started reading this blog this month. I love it! Hilarious!!!! Oh and thanks for the tip about make it or break it I can now procrastinate on the bajillion papers I have to write :)

I am currently on my THIRD set of stress fractures and the worst ones to date. The first one I had was in my right femur, then my foot, now I have one in the neck of my left femur and I’m on crutches for six to ten weeks because the doc is worried it will fracture through. So. miserable. At least I have Make it or Break it to keep me company on the sofa :)

Up until the start of the year, I drank SO much soda…especially Diet Coke- gah it pains me to recall the number of cans I probably went through! For what it’s worth, I haven’t had one since December 31, 2011 – woo! I feel ashamed to admit my breakfast time- 10 am…I only have to be at work at 10.30 so by the time I hit up the gym and shower, it’s already 10…hence no mid morning snack!

Reply

I love mountain dew but am trying not to drink pop anymore or on the rare occasion. Bubbly water is helping a lot.
Interesting fact: until very recently, Mtn Dew in Canada did not contain caffeine unlike its American cousin. I used to stock up on it when we travelled to the US because I always felt cheated out of my caffeine hit drinking the Canadian stuff. The new bottles now have “contains caffeine” written on them. Apparently Canda had a long standing ban on any clear pop that was caffeinated but it was recently lifted. If only they had done it while I was still in University :)

Fast food sizes in North America are extremely big. When I moved to Europe that was one of the first things I noticed. There is definitely no such thing as an extra large anything and overall the sizes of fries, burgers and drinks are all much smaller. The reality is that in the fast food world everything is bigger in North America and nearly double the calories.

Reply

1. We had fast food as a “treat” as a kid. My parents never wanted us to have it too often, but didn’t withhold it. I definitely at my share of big macs while doing high school sports though……. when you don’t get out of tennis matches or track meets until 8 pm ish at night, and you drive yourself around, that drive-thru is mighty tempting. I don’t regret it either.

2. I usually eat breakfast between 6 and 8 (I have a inconsistent work schedule), but I’m usually always ready for a Trader Joe’s granola bar by 10:30, and ready again for lunch at 12/12:30.

3. I have recently returned to running after my tibial stress fracture. I missed 2 half marathons and a full marathon because of it. Sad Face.

4.Tangent: My last day of work for the foreseeable future was today (we’re moving to Phoenix for the husband’s job and my career is a Hollywood career, which I will mostly be leaving behind). I’m super excited about the future though— but not about packing!

I LOOOVE wheat thins too!! I actually try not to buy it because I always end up eating way more than I want!

I didn’t drink much soda when I was growing up, neither do I now, I guess I could consider myself lucky. I enjoy carbonated drink on a hot sunny day though, alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage :)

Reply

I don’t think we drank a lot of soda as a kid. But come college I did Now I barely drink any. I don’t eat a mid-morning snack except on trainer day (today). And I have lunch anywhere from 11-1, depending on the day.
I have had stress fractures in both shins. But have been clear of injury since 2008.
I got to do an adoption tonight and send a great little cat home with his new family!

I mainly ate Subway in college because it was the one of 2 places we had for fast food where I went to college. I still mainly only eat Subway but once in a while I will eat a breakfast sandwich from somewhere. I am not a big fan of burgers that aren’t venison.

I am a reading teacher so my lunch has to be when no one needs me which ends up being at 10:45 am. So I eat a very early breakfast then end up snacking all afternoon.

Reply

I actually haven’t drunk soda since before high school. There was a short period of time before I drank coffee that I drank diet coke in college, but other than that, I’ve never been a soda person!

Reply

I’ve had a stress reaction in my femur before (bone edema, which is just short of a stress fracture).

I am constantly hungry in the morning. I can tell when it is exactly 10:15 without looking at the clock, because I suddenly get starving at that time.

Reply

We didn’t have soda in the house, but we would sometimes get it on road trips, at Dad’s house, or when we ate Pizza…so I don’t really drink it that much. I mayyybbbeee have at most 1 soda a month, but often times, not even one. We ate a lot of fast food growing up, I’m surprised I wasn’t a fatty. Once I got to college I basically cut it out and only had fast food once my freshmand year. Now when I have it (with the exception of chick fil a side salad and the wendy’s baked potato) I don’t even like the way it tastes and it makes me feel aweful, so I skip out.

Do you usually eat a morning snack? What time? What time do you eat lunch?
I try to hold off until 10 (I have breakfast around 8/830) and split my morning snack of almonds into 30min intervals. I have lunch at 12.

Funny you mentioned portion sizes! Hubs and I watched the movie/documentary “SuperSize Me” (about McDonald’s) last night and it was mind blowing. I learned that 60% of Americans do not exercise. Crazy! I would be the meanest person ever if I did not exercise! :)

I find it so sad that our country has an obesity epidemic and it is PREVENTABLE. It is really upsetting to me.

That movie is definitely an eye opener. Seriously, I would be a crazy person if I didn’t exercise. It really is upsetting and it is sad that we don’t hold the importance of our health a lot higher:)

This is crazy because I used to work at Outback in highschool and would eat it at least once or twice a week. Sometimes I had the cheese fries as my meal!! It’s amazing that I didn’t weigh 300 pounds! So glad I know a little more about nutrition now, and can be more kind to my body!!

Isn’t being a teacher amazing? We had our spring break a few weeks ago, and it was fantastic! Enjoy!! :)

your school is amazing that you have classes like that, all schools need things like that! Kids have no idea what’s in this awful food that’s being given to them, even adults don’t seem to! I’ve never been much of a soda person and now I don’t drink it at all, the carbonation upsets my stomach!

When I was younger (like middle school) I used to drink a lot of soda. I drank Dr.Pepper like it was going out of style and to no one’s surprise I was a chunky child (I had other bad eating habits as well). But then one day I decided that I would cut out soda when I out to eat and then slowly I pretty much just cut it out all together. And I dropped a lot of weight. Now I drink a Dr.Pepper probably once every two months, mostly as a treat after a hard or long run. The same is pretty much true for going out to eat. I used to go to DQ and get a blizzard probably like three times a week. Now I get them hardly ever! But I do still love them :) And it’s hard to resist going to Taco Bell when you live across the street from it!

As for a morning snack, I usually have an apple with PB around 11 AM or so. I don’t usually go to lunch until 1:30 so it makes me go home and not eat everything in our apartment.

Ha! You sound like me! I already had two snacks today–a granola bar at 9 and banana + strawberries + pb five minutes ago!

I’m an early snack eater too.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to you and Billy for helping me figure out how to watch Make it or Break it on Hulu the other night! It was a great episode and I can’t wait for the rest of the season! Ahhh!

Have a super awesome day.

I used to love Dr. Pepper and Mello Yello! I got out of that in college and switched to mainly water or crystal light, with the occasional diet soft drink thrown in. Fast food was definitely more popular for me in college, but I never lived off it. I have always loved to cook, so even in college I would opt to cook instead of eat out.

Tangent – I am super frustrated with my internet company!!!!!!!!!!

I love snacks! I just had a baby in December, so I can totally relate to the constant hunger of pregnancy. However, I must warn you, if you choose to breastfeed, it is twice as bad. I literally am never full now. It is 11:30 here in Oklahoma and I have already eaten my breakfast, lunch and two snacks. Oops! I have no idea what I am going to eat for my afternoon snack now!

That is what I heard…I am so afraid of the hunger beast I am about to encounter ha. Hope you found something delicious for your afternoon snack!

Hi Janae. I love your blog and this is my first comment! I started running about two years ago and within the past 10 months, I’ve had two stress fractures in the distal tibia. TWO in the same spot! My orthopedist told me that I am just prone to them based on genetics and body structure. That answer was not enough for me, so I saw a podiatrist a few weeks ago.

This is where things get a little gross, but the podiatrist told me that I have bunions on my feet. The bunions affect the way I walk, causing me to overpronate, and I was overpronating to an extreme extent while running. I wore stability shoes, but those were not enough according to the podiatrist. I just got some custom-made orthotics, which are pricey and not covered by medical insurance. These will hopefully cause me to walk, and run, properly.

The point of this comment is to encourage readers that, if what your doctor is telling you just doesn’t add up, seek a second opinion. Yes they are professionals, but most specialize in a certain area rather than a “total body” or “whole person” approach.

I used to drink soda and still do every once in a while even though the artificial sweeteners are going to rot out my stomach- if they haven’t already.. I def ate fast food when I was a kid and into my early teen years- I don’t think it was all too often though-
Working at Denny’s- I know all about the worst food in America- I’m pretty sure our food rates right up at the top of that list.. Gross.
