New Crazy Marathon Record and Birthday Treats

Winter finally hit and I really don’t think there is anything more beautiful.  Yes, I am mad at the light pole, the trash can, the car and the corner of the building for getting in the way of my picture.  I guess I could have walked a few feet over to the left to avoid those things but I didn’t want to fall on the ice again today.

Today I only had a few minutes to fit in a workout because I have more important things to do like meet up with my mom for treats after school.  I hit up the elliptical for a quick 30 minute workout this morning.  I usually just read and casually go at a ‘feel-good’ pace on that machine of torture but today I really wanted to get a quick efficient workout.

I set the elliptical to manual and my normal resistance (14) but I would switch off two minutes of hitting 7.5-8.0 mph and then a minute back at 6.0 (6.5 is my usual pace on the elliptical when I am using tension).  I did that ten times and it was the first time in a while that I was actually sweating hard core from the elliptical.  Mission accomplished and my legs will still be fresh tomorrow for an 8 mile run followed by body pump….nothing better than Saturday workouts.

Did you know that kids in high school still bring treats for the class for their birthdays?  Reason #16 I became a teacher.

With all of this indoor running talk on the blog lately, I had to share with you the new Women’s Indoor Marathon World Record holder, Melissa Gillette.

Melissa was just planning on using the Maple Leaf Indoor Marathon as a training run but ended up breaking the world record for the women’s indoor track marathon with a time of 3:08:53.  The best part is that she decided to run it just a few days before the race. The pace that she ran was just her long run pace which ended up beating the record by 7 minutes!  She realized that she was on pace to beat the record about half way through the race and began to pick it up a little bit!  This was her first indoor marathon!

The marathon distance = 204 laps around the indoor track…can you imagine?  Every 30 minutes they would switch directions to prevent injuries!

Melissa said, “I may not be the fastest runner, but I am the fastest crazy woman to run an indoor marathon.”

———————————

How much would someone have to pay you to run an indoor marathon on a shortened track that takes 204 laps to complete?  Do you ever run on an indoor track?  Is there one in you area.

-I would do it for $100, actually $50.  I am cheap, you know that. BYU has one and I used to use it in college all of the time but man does it get stuffy in there.

Have you ever decided at the last minute to run a race?  Where and when?

I may have asked this in the past but I need to know again:  Chocolate or Vanilla ice cream (twist answer is not allowed)?

-Vanilla.

ohmygoodness One of the ladies that runs in my running group is in that photo!! #24 Margie Lawrence – she is an awesome lady! Can I pretty please steal that photo and send it to her?? It would make her SO very happy!!

Seriously, that many times around the track…is NOTHING but sheer dedication!

Vanilla- the topping possibilites are endless with vanilla.

I dont think I could ever do that many laps on an indoor track. My gym has an indoor track and it pains me to run it!

Haha, the fastest crazy woman to run an indoor marathon.

That is nuts. And that speed is still pretty fast.

People would have to pay me to run a marathon period, lol. And no fair that we can’t say twist for that last question!! Because that is totally my answer. If I had to choose, though, I would probably say vanilla. And add some warm apple tart.

Reply

Whoa that’s incredible! I can’t even imagine how fast that is lol.. I am a vanilla girl, all the way! My favorite is vanilla soft serve with chocolate dip… Mmmm

Vanilla.

If I were in marathon shape, I would run that race if someone paid the entry fee. Boring but unusual sounds kind of interesting :P

Last minute, like day before? Never done that!

Reply

You could not pay me enough money to run an indoor marathon! Chocolate hands down!

P.S. I can’t run right now because I hurt my foot, and it is KILLING me.

Chocilla. Hah!

I’d run the indoor track marathon for free, just for a challenge. I might have to have some serious iPod distraction though. 20 miles on a treadmill was bad enough.

Not totally last minute but I did an obstacle/mud endurance run because someone I knew was injured and gave me their number the day before. It was 10 miles so not too crazy, but running through waist-deep water was certainly an interesting experience I wouldn’t otherwise have had. I’d have never thought to enter a race like that if she hadn’t given me her number.

I could totally do it. When running, I sometimes calculate how far I have left based on the number of laps on a track.

Ice cream, I go for blue bell, the great divide, one half vanilla one half chocolate. Full part deeeeelish! Do y’all have blue bell brand it Utah?

That’s impressive! I’ve done a few long runs on an indoor track to avoid running on slushy icy sidewalks in Nova Scotia winter – but a marathon?! Aiyayay! I hope she had some good tunes!

VANILLA ice cream, all the way! :)

Vanilla! ( with hot fudge)

o.m.geeeee……that is a long time on the indoor track! CRAZY!

beautiful winter photos!

In 2002, two friends and I decided to run the Chicago Half Marathon, two days in advance of the race, on pretty much zero training. I had never run more than 7 miles at a time before then. I did finish, but had trouble walking for a week afterwards. I’ve learned that it’s better to train for these things. =)

I wish I had access to an indoor track! It would be great for those brutal winter mornings – so much better than a treadmill. I’m trying to find a public outdoor track to use for repeats – all I can find nearby is a private high school whose track is fenced off on three sides. Probably shouldn’t barge in without asking first…

CHOCOLATE!

A marathon on an indoor track? I still suppose that’s better than a marathon on a treadmill.

Vanilla ice cream. Duh. But it has to combined with something else (like a cookie or brownie).

Reply

I had no idea they did marathons on a track! I would go insane with boredom! Haha easy for spectators though! and VANILLA. Always. I LOVE chocolate, but I’ll always pick vanilla first when it comes to cake and ice cream.

Reply

I have NEVER heard of an indoor marathon! That is so interesting! Who on earth came up with that idea??

Reply

I’m not sure any amount of money could convince me to part with my sanity. I’m pretty sure I would lose it running that many times around an indoor track. I used to use my school’s during the winter when i was in college. I couldn’t hack it for any longer than three miles (and this is coming from someone who can run 20 on a treadmill).

Reply

I can’t imagine running a marathon, let alone a marathon INDOORS!! Yikes!

Reply

I can’t ever imagine doing an indoor marathon!!! I can barely get myself today a mile around the indoor track!

And I say vanilla ice-cream all the way!

Reply

I have done plenty of 5k’s where you just wake up, register on site, and run.

If I was in marathon shape……I’d do it as long as it was free.

Vanilla.

I trained for my first half marathon 100% on an indoor track. 10 laps = 1 mile. Soooooooo boring. I haven’t ran on it since.
I did a bike race once last minute, turned out to be really fun and I had no time to overthink or get nervous.
Vanilla all the way. Which is odd because I love chocolate so much? But with ice cream, cake, and frosting, I always go for vanilla.

That’s crazy awesome! :)

There is an indoor track at my gym and I use it usually once a week if I want to run a few miles before a class or when the treadmills are all full (lame people having New Years resolutions). But a whole marathon on one? Even if I switched directions every 30 minutes, it makes my knees hurt just thinking about it.

My first half marathon I got talked into 2 days before the race. It was the Top of Utah half and my roommate was using it as a training run for the St. George marathon. The farthest I had ran was 8 miles, but I finished it no problem and had so much fun doing it. Needless to say I was hooked after that.

I looove me some chocolate, but I think I would have to say vanilla so I could put butterfingers, oreos or PB cups on top. Wait. I suppose I could do that with chocolate too. You post such deep questions that really make me think ;) And now I want to go raid my pantry as a result….

Reply

haha…i’m bought pretty cheap to and would sell out to run that indoor marathon for $100, prolly less too!!

great way to rock that elliptical, like u said, if u’ve only got 30 min’s use every minute that u got and now have a BLAST with ur mom!

ya, i almost wish i could go back to grammar school just for the bday and other treats. oh, and let’s start having more parties of the less celebrated holidays…like every prez’s bday and such. ;)

Reply

K maybe I’m dumb, but if everyone’s going at different paces, how do they switch directions every 30 minutes and keep track of # of laps and actual distance? Cuz if you’re close to finishing a lap and have to change directions, you have to do almost a whole other lap to count off the next one…???

Holy Crap! She deserves a GOLD medal for running in circles that many times! BTW: Just fell upon your blog and am loving it so far!

An indoor marathon sounds like torture! I did some running on an indoor track in high school but I never raced anything longer than the 800 so it wasn’t a biggie. I do think it is stifling in those places but I also played basketball the gym gets pretty rank after a few ours of practice too.
I would have to ask for an obscene amount of money to do a marathon on a track, indoor or out.
Chocolate! Since swirl isn’t an option but it should be ;-)

Oh, I do think that lady is freaking amazing though!!!

I am not a teacher but I was lucky enough to indulge in an ice cream sundae bar at work yesterday because it was someone’s 10 year anniversary! I was loving it *and had leftovers today!

Hmmm, I would run an indoor marathon for $500. $1,000 would be better but I’d settle for $500 if I couldn’t negotiate.

I have never done an indoor track except in college for Relay for Life. We walked, no running.

The Two Oceans half marathon I just signed up for was kinda last minute. It has been sold out for months, but I begged for an international entry and they obliged. I have just over a month to train. Not very last minute, but a sudden decision.

I am loving Vanilla at the moment. Chocolate is more dependent on the brand.

Reply

u are so stinking cute. i love ur rules….”twist flavor is not aloud”. ;).

mine is chocolate if it’s plain but vanilla if it’s covered with 239746937469376 toppings :):)

Reply

The answer is chocolate. Always!

Reply

I would do it for 2000 dollars..hehe! I am not cheap! I have those same reecees in my fridge right now and they are almost empty. Thanks for reminding me I need to go get more! :)

Reply

Vanilla all the way. Highly underrated I believe. Plus chocolate chips and assorted goodies on top :)

I wouldn’t run a marathon indoors… my itb hurts just thinking about it! ;)

p.s. your snowy scenery is gorgeous.

Reply

Indoor marathon? That’s brutal! I have a hard time running 1 mile on an indoor track without dying of boredom. In fact I’d take a treadmill marathon over that.

Chocolate without a doubt!!

Reply

Oh goodness, I don’t know if I could make it that many times around a track! I’d say I do it on the cheap, but then I don’t think I’d live through it! Especially if it got stuffy.

Vanilla ice cream most of the time (so I can put candy in it and really taste the candy), but chocolate ice cream if it’s with cake.

Reply

I never even knew there was such a thing as indoor marathons!

Reply

I’m a vanilla girl. I love throwing some toppings on, and chocolate is acceptable in hot fudge form on top of the vanilla ice cream!

Reply

I would never do that. OKAY maeeyyyyybbbeee for 1 million. Yikes. Can not stand the indoor track! I would pull my hair OUT. Hah.

Vanilla -fo sho.

That girl rocks! I love that she killed the record. That takes some serious mental strength. Some day I would like to be that awesome.
I ran on an indoor track when I was in the MTC. It was killer because there were lots of stinky sweaty boys there but running saved my sanity so I did what I had to do.
I’m a chocolate ice cream kind of girl. I love it mixed with JIF peanut butter. Mmmm…yum.

Reply

I will pay you $100. Now go break that record!

Reply

i’ll contribute to that fund! hehe

Reply

I think I would go insane…but if someone paid me (or really even just dared me), I would do it. :)

Vanilla ice cream with hot fudge (not chocolate syrup). Mmmmm!

Reply

I lovee chocolate bars but chocolate ice cream is a bit too intense…vanilla all the way! Even topping-free, it always hits the spot!

Hey Janae! I published a new post inspired by YOU and your Miss Representation posts! And of course, I made a shoutout to you too! Thanks for all you blog about! You seriously inspire me to want to help other women more!

Hahaha, oh my god, that must be so horribly boring! But at least you get to switch direction and look at everything from the other side.

I am signed up for the Nanny Goat 24 hour race in may. 24 hours on a 1 mile loop course at a horse ranch. What? Oh and currently 6 miles kills me and is way too far. Oh well, whatever…

Chocolate. Duh.

Reply

Oh my gosh talk about horribly boring! That is so freaking impressive. My gym has 13 laps to a mile, that’s a million laps!

Reply

Congrats to her!

I wonder what the men’s record time on an indoor track is?

Reply

VANILLA! Chocolate ice cream is just not chocolate-y enough, does that make sense at all?? I am hard-core in the chocolate world.
Do you think vanilla ice cream helped Melissa beat the record?

Reply

204 laps!? Indoors?! That is some mental toughness right there. I honestly don’t know if I could do an indoor marathon period, I might just go nuts.

As for the vanilla/chocolate debate it depends on the quality of vanilla used. If it uses real vanilla then heck yes, count me in, but if it is artificial vanilla I’d go for chocolate. It would also have to be non-dairy for me!

Reply

I run on an indoor track at school and it’s actually a really nice one but it’s 9 laps to a mile so you have to have a really good playlist going to get through it. The Y I go to at home has an indoor track that is 15 laps to a mile, I get dizzy if I do more than a couple mile on that one. But congrats to her! 204 laps is insane!

Reply

wait she ran a marathon on a track? that honestly sounds like the worst thing I can imagine. haha not the marathon part…but the on the track part.

Reply

$500 (and no guarantee i would finish) so boring!
Vanilla!
