Why Are Friendships SO Important?

I have missed you all so much today.  The internet was down for the majority of work today (second day in a row) and so I couldn’t respond to your comments or check your blogs during my lunch break.  It was a long day.  I really don’t know how teachers taught before the internet, 80% of my lesson plans involve the internet as a resource!

I did start out my morning right with a little spinning (hmmmm spinning 2 times within 12 hours = sore you know what) while watching, “Up All Night.”   I bet as Billy was trying to sleep with my bike and fan going full blast in the early morning he was questioning what in the world he was thinking giving me the spin bike for Christmas.

Photo

I also had a delicious breakfast of yogurt with frozen peaches thrown in.  My best teacher friend brings me delicious treats on a daily basis, hiding behind my computer is todays treat of choice…..peanut M&Ms, she is a good woman.

Billy really loves it when I eat near my computer.

——————————————-

As you may remember, I am reading Mile Markers by Kristin Armstrong and I am absolutely in love with the book.  I was going back through the parts that I highlighted (is it strange that I get extremely happy because my iPad lets me highlight things in color?!) I came across a section that I had to share with you.

Photo copy 5

This comes from the section where Kristin is talking about being on the Today Show and what she shared with them:

“The study was done by Laura Cousino Klein, PhD, and was originally conducted to test the body’s response to stress.  The authors discovered that females have a very different physical reaction to stress than males do.  In a stressful situation, our brains release oxytocin into the bloodstream, which apparently buffers the typical fight-or-flight stress response.  Oxytocin somehow encourages us to take care of children and gather with other women, which then produces more oxytocin, and this has a calming effect.  No wonder we scramble to find our girlfriends whenever the *$@% hits the fan! ……

…….The study goes on to say that women who have close ties with other women have lower blood pressure, heart rates and cholesterol levels.  How about that?

Woman who maintain close and consistent relationships with girlfriends over a 9-year period cut their health risk by 60 percent! By contrast, women who do not maintain close female relationships have health risks similar to those caused by smoking or carrying extra weight.

Okay, WOW.  So if these facts are true for regularly fabulous female relationships, can you imagine what the studies would look like for close and long-lasting friendships between RUNNERS?! Take the added health benefits and subtract smoking and too many extra pounds (I mean, we run, after all) and maybe we will live as long and as wisely as Yoda.  The Force is with us, ladies.”

I loved this section about friendships and the benefits of them for so many reasons and there were a few things that I took from this chapter and I want to do personally:

1.  Make time for your friendships like you make time for exercise, the health benefits are just as great.  If anything I should make it mandatory that I include time for friends every week….those bonds are so important and I NEED these friendships in my life.  It makes me beyond happy to spend time with girlfriends, take advantage of this.

2.  Continue to run with friends and especially your sister:)  The combination of exercise and bonding = perfection.

3.  I think this is another reason I have fallen in love with blogging.  I feel like everyday I get to chat with girlfriends and feel that connection…hello OXYTOCIN…..even if it isn’t in real life (well, some of them have become real life friendships) it still counts.

4.  Reach out to women that I know in my real life that may not have close friendships and become good friends with them so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of having close friendships.

———————————————————

Do you agree with these benefits of friendships?  Do you run with other women?  Tell me about the close friendships in your life!! Who is the first friend that you call when things get tough?

Does your job require the internet?

How did you start your morning?

-Brush teeth and get on the bike….good thing (for me) I was still in my spin clothes from the night before;)

Up All Night is the funniest. New Girl is also a blast!

I could not agree more about friendships. I don’t know what I would do with out my best girlfriends. And I agree with you so much about blogging as well, it’s like this whole new world of awesome connections and inspiration and motivation!!

I was without internet for exactly two days this past week due to an ice storm and I seriously thought I would DIE! We kept stopping at Starbucks to get our fix.

This morning started way to early at 5:45 with a run on the treadmill!!!

Reply

OHHH thanks for the New Girl recommendation, I am always looking for new shows! Seriously…the connections in blogging is amazing! AWESOME WAY TO START YOUR DAY!

Reply

Another really hysterical new show is “2 Broke Girls”….I didn’t think I’d like it at first but its hysterical!

Wow, this is interesting. I agree that friendships make everyone happy, but sometimes they’re a bit stressful! Like any relationship, a good friendship requires work and nuturing. I definitely agree that blogging has helped add a new way of making friends. Very, very cool :)

Reply

You are right…they totally can be stressful, I guess it is finding the right ones that don’t stress you out too much! YAY for blogging friends!

Reply

I need a spin bike! And to read that book. Stat.

Reply

You could even read the book while you were working out on the bike:)

Reply

Nice work getting up so early to spin!! SOrry about your butt–that prob hurts (why I don’t love spin. haha)!

I LOVE me some good friends! I totally believe having ’em helps us be and stay healthy. Long rungs are SOOOO much better with a sister running beside ya!

Reply

Seriously…..I crave a long run with friends, they are the best ever! Hope you are having an amazing day Annette!

Reply

Oooh! Good to know! I hold on to relationships with close girlfriends and my husband sometimes thinks I’m crazy… but I love my girls. Thanks for posting the study, Janae.

Reply

Strangely, all of my friends are guys! And non-runners! I’m doomed! lol

My job doesn’t require the internet, but I require it to get through the workday. Thank goodness for smartphones!

Reply

Agree on the friendship thing. I love my girlfriends. They inspire me and help me to want to be better every day.
I started my day super early with a run before school. I love running with my training group – I think we are becoming co-dependent.
My school most definitely requires the internet. I’m not sure how I made it through my first degree without it.

Reply

Wow! Thanks for sharing that!! I am ordering that book tonight. Maybe that’s the only reason I will run in the cold miserable snow is when I run with my close girlfriend – makes it enjoyable! technically my job doesn’t require internet, being a stay at home mom – but I wouldn’t make it through the day without it;-) my day started with a short treadmill run and weights. perfect.

Reply

Unfortunately I haven’t really run with other women – I’ve had a few runs with my little sister and cannot wait for more but she’s still recovering from a knee injury. An EXCITING change though is that TODAY my bff wrote me saying we should sign up for a Half Marathon next year… she has just had her first child and NEVER run more than one mile straight – and her goal for us was 1:4o.. my initial reaction was ARE YOU CRAZY? Then she said ‘What are you scared of?’ She’s right! If she can come from not running at all and make it with dedication and hard work, so can I! I’m really excited to train together once the doctors let her off recovery from her C-Section :)

I like this idea!! Hope you girls rock it. :)

Love Up All Night!

So true about running with girlfriends and buddies in general! It’s always more fun to run with friends. A lot of times during the week since I’m pressed for time and trying to get it in before my 9 to 5 I run solo, so when I get to run with my buddies on the weekends and sometimes during the work week it’s always a treat! Also love me some girls nites out. Always fun when you can get together with the ladies and let loose a bit!

Reply

janae, i started taking spin classes within the past couple weeks, and i think i’ve fallen in love! i had only taken them once or twice before, but i think i’m now addicted. i LOVED them!

totally agree that friendships are CRUCIAL! i miss my college girlfriends so much, but i still try to talk to them as much as i can on the phone or online.

OMG, we didn’t have internet at home for two days a few weeks ago and it was so hard! I had no idea what to do with myself. How do I look things up?

I love that piece about friendships with other women. I love my girlfriends and while I don’t have many, the ones I do are extremely valued. There’s nothing like laughing over the silliest things or being able to bare your soul with a really good friend. It’s always therapeutic. I wish they all lived in my neighborhood and not so far away!

I started my day by taking the dog on a walk and being stopped by a creepy guy who has seen me before and “knew we had a connection” because my husband is in the Army and he’s retired Army. YIKES!

Also this posts reminds me how good it is to break up pretzels and put them in yogurt. mmmm.

Sadly, I have never run with others – except for the short bursts during high school track and colorguard. I used to say I wouldn’t like it, but now I think I would love it! I totally agree that girl time is crucial….

Reply

Very interesting! I feel like that makes sense though. That’s what I love about blogging too, so many new friends!! :D

Reply

I so agree with these benefits of friendships! I love my friends. They have helped me to define myself, have taught me from their experiences, led me by example, and continually amaze me with their incredible characteristics.

But, my running time is my alone time. I prefer to run by myself because it’s my personal time to think and reflect, and to listen to whatever goofy music I want (I actually have the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse song on my MP3 player – and I am 33 and married but have no children!) That, and I like being able to go at exactly my own comfortable pace and route, which may fluctuate or meander with exactly zero notice! No explanations needed when you are by yourself. =)

Reply

I feel so blessed to have such amazing, kind, strong women in my life as friends! I also love blogging because it has “introduced” me to some really inspiring women (like you, Janae!) who have offered support and guidance and enriched my life. I always appreciate when you take the time to email me back or comment-especially during my time of injury and self-doubt about my recovery. :)

Haha, boy am I in TROUBLE. I have zero close female friends. My few close friends are guys. I have just never really found it easy to connect to girls (I think I am afraid they will judge me. Girls are bad to do that.)

I started my morning with a Molecular Biology class. I know, I know… my life is too exciting. :P

Love this post! Very cool… and I’d have to agree with most of it.
My roommate and I have been best friends our whole lives. It’s like we’re married- and although it’s not perfect, it’s awesome. I love friendship!

Oh- I started my very first spinning class on Monday. My you-know-what is sore as well. You go superwoman, two times in 12 hours? My lower extremities would fall off.

Reply

We are not allowed to access the Internet at work. My shifts are 12+ hours long! That’s crazy!

Reply

I did not open up myself to close women friendships soon enough in my life. I feared women would only be petty and competitive. I am sure some are, but I just needed to find the right ones! i love, absolutely love my women friends. I make sure to have at least one woman outing a week.

#3, you wrote those ( ) for me right?? Haha, but seriously, thanks for the continued friendship my dear Janae.

I can’t wait to read that book. My BFF lives about 900 miles away, but is still there for me ALWAYS. My closest friend where I live is someone I work with & run with – which is the best of both worlds!
I teach too, and we use the internet everyday too. I go crazy without it.
My day started today with a shower, followed by an email “all schools are on a two hour delay.” WooHoo! Coffee & Today with Matt and Ann (my TV BFFs)

Reply

My friendship life is more like my I work/go to school with/am in a club with you. I should make some friendship fostering goals, like taking more time for my pals.

If the internet went down my place of employment would crash and burn! I work at a newspaper and we’re constantly emailing and researching online for various stories!

Reply

My best runner friend is my nearest and dearest friend from college. It’s funny how a random roommate can turn out to be someone you couldn’t live without. :) She’s pregnant, so no running buddy for me lately. :( We have our sights on Chicago Marathon 2013.

I started my morning by jumping straight in the shower…no morning workout as I planned to run after school today, and it was awesome!

Reply

That is so interesting. We are studying in class right now about the body’s response to acute and chronic stress so I’m sure my professor would love to hear about this! Thank you!

Uhmmm that study is amazing and makes me miss my NYC girls’ running crew so hard! I need to plan a destination race with them like yesterday!!! Also I might just need to forward some of my other girlfriends this post to be like “SEE! You NEED to come running with me and then we can all be zen like Buddha!!”

I totally agree that friendships keep us healthy and happy! Unfortunately most of my friends do not run, so that’s a big bummer. I call my sister in law and best friend for sure when things get tough or if I just want to chat. I am definitely blessed to have her. She has a blog also, so it’s fun to chat about the blogging world too! I ran this morning and did pilates. Yay! I am a stay at home mom, so I guess I do use the internet for my job:) Thanks for the fun info!

This makes so much sense! How awesome :)

I agree with the first comment Up All Night is a new fav of mine too and like she said New Girl is awesome !!! So so funny! Dare I say one of the funniest shows I watch right after Modern Family! I feel like I could be bff’s with Zooey Deshchanel if she wasn’t famous, I kinda feel like you will feel the same way! Two other reaaaally funny new shows are Whitney and Happy Endings! Can you tell I’m a tv addict :p

Reply

I totally agree. I love this community of fun girls :D it’s great! and I also love having all these women to chat with. I lost some of my best g/f’s when I got pregnant and it was the worst time in my life. It now makes sense, I had no female companionship…..now I do and life is GREAT !!!

Definately need my girlfriends! Our running group is a mixed bunch. I really enjoy when it’s all the gals!
At-home mommy mostly, so yes the Internet is required. Very part time PT too.
Started the day with a little coffee and a 7 mile run!

i am SOOOO jealous you had a TM and spin bike at home. I wish i had one.. so maybe i would be motivated on cold days. i have a couple friends that run, but the ones that live near me DESPISE running@!! :(
New girl is a must, and i love parent hood. I can never watch shows when i am working out, i guess i just kind of daze out, but maybe i should try it. i guess it is easier with an ipad, and i am never really into the shows at the gym.
this morning started with me sleeping 30 min past my alarm, and was going to do yoga but guess that was a no go, so breakfast and the today show before a crazy day at work.

I have some great friends in my life & adter reading this, I feel truly blessed! I’m also thankful for you! Your enthusiasm and love for running has rekindled the love for running I had years ago. I have a few people that I may call in times of need. I have several women that I email/text when I need prayer, and I almost always go to my mom before anyone else (other than my husband, of course!). :)

I am so thankful for my friendships with my girlfriends! I am more of a “fewer but closer friends” kind of person and I have two friends whom I couldn’t live without! One of them has been my friend since kindergarten and the other I met in college. I even got to be roommates with both of them for one fabulous year in college :-)

I’m a teacher too and couldn’t live without the internet. I can’t imagine having to actually talk to every single teacher and parent that emails me!

Reply

Friends are awesome. Making new friends is hard when you move, so I’m made at that process right now. You can make acquaintances super fast, but it just takes a little more time to make lasting friends. So worth the effort though!

I started the day with yoga today!

That’s so cool that you can highlight in purple on the iPad! That vanilla Chobani is so good! It has the perfect amount of vanilla flavor.

I love talking to Andy about things in life, but sometimes I just need a girl–that’s where my best friends come in!

I’m a designer, so yep, my job requires the internet for image searching and research before I begin a project!

I started my morning with a big bowl of cereal and the Today show–followed by blogging and sipping some peach tea.

I took the day off from the gym and am SO excited to get back into it tomorrow–I miss it too much!

Because of your recommendation I down loaded the book onto my kindle…. 1/2 way through and amazing. Makes me re-examine my running and how much more than fitness I can get out of it!

my absolute favorite thing is to start my morning with a WORKOUT! Even if it means getting up at 4:30…but then my brain tells me later in the day that i was crazy and its time to go to sleep (I’m also a teacher, so sleeping on the job is not possible, as you know!!)…but I always seem to forget that feeling because working out in the morning always seems to happen! :)

My absolute best girlfriend is my dear friend Laura. She and I were roomates in college and she was also the maid of honor at my wedding. I hate living so far away from her (Alaska to Michigan) but we are always able to pick right up as if we haven’t skipped a minute of time apart.

I am also a teacher who HEAVILY relies on the internet. I may not always have students access websites, but they do their research and other projects frequently online.

I started my morning with a little blogging, a little running, a little abs/arms workout, and a little oatmeal.

Reply

That is why I don’t do spin. My bum is in pain within 5 minutes. Yes, I am a pansy.

I definitely agree about the friendships. I don’t run with anyone ever since none of my friends are runners, but 2 years ago I met a gal who was new in my neighborhood. She and I clicked immediately. While we don’t live near each other any longer, our friendship brings me so much happiness and joy.

Today my day started with me rolling my large pregnant self out of bed and hit the pavement for a 4-mile run/shuffle.

I’m a special ed teacher, so I use the internet all the time to work on school documents and IEP’s. If our school server ever goes down we’re in big trouble, b/c we rely heavily on it!
I slept in this morning, but I did get a workout after school today.

My best friend lives in Alaska (we’ve known each other since we were 6!) and she is always the first person I call when I need someone to listen. Sometimes I wish I could just drive over to her house, but it would be kind of a long drive :)

We have to use the internet at work to look up requirements for testing and/or speciment requirements. I think there is a Code color for if the server goes down on the hospital campus… it’s pretty much as much of an emergency as a fire or mass casualty!

I started my day with breakfast with the hubs and then an easy 3 miler. I really enjoy starting my shift later in the day… gives me more time to enjoy/tolerate the morning ;)

I definitely don’t add up enough time in my life for friends other than my boyfriend =/

I do agree about the friendships with women, but they are harder to find than it sounds. I try to run with friends, but they either live far away and I seem to have weather and schedule issues with the ones close by. My job requires the internet only in that I work from home and use the internet to connect to the servers. I got up, watched tennis and then went to the gym.

So interesting! Whenever I see “oxytocin”, however, I think about my days as a pharmacy student when I had to restock the C-section rooms in the hospital. They were ALWAYS out of oxytocin no matter how many vials I dumped in that bin, and wouldn’t you know you had to totally dress out to go in the surgical suite, all to dumb 100 vials in a drawer! It would take me 30 minutes to scrub, gown, dumb, change back…ah, late nights at the hospital, don’t miss you!

This post is so so wonderful!

I believe in this because I have seen how relationships with friends have made such a profound impact in my life. Sometimes I get frustrated because I am typically the friend doing a lot of the “reaching out”, but it’s worth it. So, so worth it.

I see my very best friends from high school (and earlier!) at least once/month. No fail.

The women in my ward up here are very tight and we have similar interests. (That is where my Wasatch Back Ragnar team comes from- all 12 women from my ward- isn’t that amazing???) We have girl’s night every month or two where we meet at my friend’s house after the babies are in bed, we bring ridiculous amounts of treats, and we stay up talking and laughing until the wee morning hours. (Or late morning hours- sometimes as late as 6AM. Yikes. Our husbands were not so happy…)

Anyway- I guess what I am saying is that I have been PROFOUNDLY happier the last few years when I have made the effort to keep up relationships with my girlfriends.

And blogging TOTALLY counts.

I totally believe in the power of friendships – especially between women! Three friends and I are all separated. We used to work together and saw each other often. Now that we can’t, we set up a “secret” facebook page where we can chat. We use it to encourage healthy habits, talk about our days and share the latest great thing or heartache. It’s awesome! My other friend and I write e-mails and try to see each other once a week. I really don’t know what I would have done without them. When my mom died they all dropped what they were doing and hightailed it over to my place with snacks, kleenex and anything else I could have needed. Friends help keep us whole!

Love my girlfriends, but usually enjoy having time to myself when I run.

First thing I did this morning? Get up, start the coffee maker, get back in bed, and surf the web and catch up on emails (later followed by an 8 mile run)

A lot of my studying for residency requires the internet, which can be a HUGE distraction (like from reading and commenting on my favorite blogs ; )

I’m stuck with using my phone for the internet until my new broadband is connected next week! It’s ok for some stuff (FB, reading blogs, etc) but no good for browsing.

I’m learning more and more how importantly girlie friends are – this year will be the year of friends for me!

I love your upbeat attitude – your #4 is awesome.
I do believe in the benefits of close friendships. My two closest friends have been the same for 15 years, and I’ve added to those over the years too. I think we can do wonderful things when we all support each other.
I start my morning with 5 minutes of closed eyes, picturing what I want to do that day. Then I get up, write down my list and keep the lights low for at least the first 15 minutes. I like to wake up slowly!

Ooh I totally need to get that book! I agree, friendships are SO important. After graduating from college, most of my best girlfriends are really far away, so I honestly don’t have many friends here that I see in person on a regular basis. So the internet and phone is essential for me to keep up with them!! And my blogger-friends TOTALLY count, I really can’t wait to meet these girls in person! As for running, I have yet to find a female friend that can run at my pace. I do like to run alone, but sometimes I go with a group here at home, but its all boys lol. I miss having a whole team full of girls like I did in college! The first couple times I ran solo without my teammates after graduation was REALLY weird and I wont lie, it was kind of sad haha.

The Things HRG’g blog makes me want:

2. Spin Bike
3. Treadmill at home
4. BRF (Best Running Friend)
5. The book (currently enroute from Amazon– gotta start small) :)
6. Random food like french toast and grilled cheese

I transplanted to my current town from somewhere else and I guess I’m staying since I married my hubs and he’s not leaving!! I am still “finding my way” here. Making close friends has been hard and making close running friends –even harder. I recently found a running group through my church and as long as my leg isn’t hurting too bad on Saturday I plan to join them. Fingers crossed for a good connection.

I love your blog. Thanks for putting a little extra pep in my day (and also completeing my Christmas/Birthday/Anniversary list for the next five years).

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) I grew up in a house filled with brothers. I think because of that, I tend to lean toward males for my closer friendships. My older brother is usually the first person (other than my husband, of course… most of the time) that I call when something good or bad happens to me. In some ways I think male companionship is more ideal because there’s never any competition or crazy mood swings (other than mine) to have to deal with. The downside is you can’t share clothes and shoes or horrible gynocologist appointment stories.

What she said about friendship is so true and makes me so thankful for my friends!
