The Marathon Olympic Trials and My Personal Streak.

SkinnyRunner is doing a running streak and has ran 18 days straight.  I decided to do my own personal streak.  I am seeing how many days in a row I can have a bowl(S) of cereal for lunch.  I am on day 2 and feeling strong.  This is going to make packing my lunches for work a whole lot easier.

The Olympic trials for 2012 will be on Jan. 14th in Houston, Texas.  These people are my heroes, I love reading about them, following their blogs (if they have one), and watching youtube clips of their races or interviews.  Basically, I stalk them and I am really good at it.  The trials are less than TWO weeks away, it is a race that will determine whether or not they go to the Olympics.  Can you imagine?  I get stressed for months leading up to a marathon where I am just trying to PR let alone run 5-minute miles and try to gain one of the three spots to represent my country in the OLYMPICS!

Runningtimes.com has an awesome section devoted to the different athletes that will be competing on Jan. 14th.

I thought it would be fun to talk about some of my favorites before the big day.

1.  Desiree Davila.  5’2″ and from Detroit, she is the fastest American woman ever to run Boston (2:22:38).  She is the third fastest American marathoner ever.

(Source of picture, quotes and information)

As a freshman in high school Desiree ran a 4:59 mile and the two-mile in 11:16.  She ran for Arizona State University and ran her very first marathon in 2:44:56.  She continued to run faster and faster marathons and hit the sub 2:30 mark in Berlin with a 2:27:53 and her PR is from Boston 2011.

I am really hoping that Desiree will be one of the three women to represent the US in the 2012 Olympics.

Who are you routing for to make the Olympic Marathon team for 2012?

What is your longest running streak?  Did you keep track of your miles for 2011…how many did you run?

What about a food streak…any food that you have been eating everyday for a while?

-Eggs, my favorite bread from Costco and pears.

Happy New Year, Janae! My goal for 2012 (one of them anyways) is to keep track of my running mileage as I start to consider myself a real “runner.” I have never kept track before!

Reply

Happy New Year to you Amanda. I have never kept detailed record either, let’s do it together. Have a great day!

I tried to eat oatmeal everyday once. It lasted about a week. I used to really love oatmeal. With my pregnancy though its one of the foods that has grossed me out. I hope once baby is born that I will love oatmeal again.

You asked if I would recommend The Long Run by Matt Long. I would. Its very good. :)

Reply

Thanks for the recommendation, you are the best. Any other foods that you don’t like now that you are pregnant. I overdosed on oatmeal last year and ate it way too much and now I can’t stand it!

Reply

Just oatmeal.

I have found that I crave peanut butter toast and orange juice almost everyday which are two things I didn’t have much before being pregnant. Peanut butter toast is what I eat for breakfast on long run days. OJ only when I had a cold.

Reply

I agree- it was a good read. Then, after reading it I read a lot about how he acted after crossing the finishing line in NYC and was very conflicted. We all have our moments, but shoving people isn’t cool. Torn! Thoughts?

Reply

Mmmmm

I didn’t know that… I am about 3/4 of the way through the book now. Matt just got out of the hospital in the part I am in.

That is really interesting and I will have to read about that when I finish the book. Never ok to shove people.

Reply

Oh and I pretty much have a banana every single day!

Reply

Hahahaha cereal everyday for lunch..love it!

PS did you ever try those nut clusters from Costco? To die for. Especially on top of cereal!!!!!

Reply

I didn’t….Anna, you just added something to my Costco list ha! Have a great day and Happy New Year!

Reply

When I go back to work this week, I will be bringing some sort of salad. A salad eating streak. I would really prefer a cheeseburger. Lol! Cereal is sooo easy to take for lunch. I have had to do it once or twice.

Reply

WAHOO for a salad eating streak!! You are right though, a cheeseburger streak sounds a lot better. Happy New Year Tanya!

Reply

Nothing I eat everyday, but most days I have Smarties, little round sugar candy and Synder nibblers pretzels as a snack. I am anal and keep track of every mile I run 2011 1,226.5 miles YAY!

Reply

DANG BETHANY….great mileage this year, that is so awesome. Enjoy your Smarties and pretzels today:)

Reply

I am cheering for Davila. I watched her run Boston 2011 – so amazing!

Food streak: yogurt and during the week I pack cereal for lunch too. So easy & super filling :)

Reply

Do you bring milk to work too or do you eat the cereal dry?!?!

Reply

I take a small container of milk. I actually saw a cute combo container at the grocery for doing just this…had a built in cool pack. Looked like a good one. Tempting. I can keep my lunch bag in a fridge though, so I skipped on the purchase.

Reply

I am going to have to find that cool pack that you speak of:)

Reply

Thanks for the heads up, I really want to watch the trials on TV, I loooove watching running and tri’s on TV. I’ll have to do some research on the runners so I can get a little background on who’s running…..is Shalae Flannagan running? (I know I totally misspelled her name…) I saw some wonderful youtube videos of her the other day!

Reply

She is running wahoo!! I think she will be in the top three too. I want to watch it on TV too!! We should Facebook chat or something as we watch it!

Reply

I’ve been on an accidental streak since the end of August (when I moved to Denver) of running at least a 5k a day. Some days I do it super super super easy. Don’t worry. It’s like my heart doesn’t even beat any faster. I just like to get a shake out.

Still trying to decide on goals. I hope I haven’t failed on any goals for this year that I still want to make. Haha. I know that one is definitely to run my first marathon!!

Reply

HOLY COW….girl, you are incredible. A 5k a day since August?!?! Seriously, that is so so cool! Way to go!!

Reply

I’m cheering for Desiree too!

Ran 1,001.09 miles according to dailymile. Goal for 2012 is to run 1,500

No food streak but I’m open to suggestions :)

Reply

DANG CYNTHIA……way to go!! OVER 1,000 miles wahoo!

Reply

I have pretty long running streaks because I don’t like days off. I feel stiff the next day!
I have a marathon on Jan 15th so I think I will watch the trials for inspiration.

Reply

AHHH you are going to rock your marathon this month wahoo! Good luck!

Reply

Thank you! I am supposed to be tapering right now but I’m not ;-)

Reply

Des is a running BEAST. So rad!

I’ve been on a muffin streak. Homemade, storebought, I can’t seem to quit!

Reply

I am now going to have to join you on your muffin streak:)

Reply

I’ve never done an intentional food streak, but I definitely get hooked on my favorites! When our summer garden came in, I had fresh tomatoes every single day. Then it was sweet potatoes. I’ve done the oatmeal (in some fashion) streak for who knows how long. I’m not really a runner, but I hope to run regularly in 2012. Happy New Year!

Reply

There is nothing better than fresh tomatoes! SUMMER COME QUICKLY:)

Reply

First of all, a 4:59 mile? Holy crap.
Second, happy New Year! :D I went on a cereal streak in the summer, I think I outgrew it. I’ve been on a salad streak and a yogurt streak. But that’s really nothing new here!

Reply

Your food streaks are healthy:) Happy New Year to you too!

Reply

Happy new year! I’m so excited for the trials, I might make the road trip down to Houston to watch them if I can. I want to run 1000 miles in 2012. That was my goal for 2011, but I fell short by about 80 miles. Shucks.

Reply

You totally should go watch them. You’ve got your goal for 2012 wahoo!

Reply

I did the run streak too, but just for the holidays. 16 days straight and ended it doing back to back half marys and PR-ing this wknd!

I love eggs. I have a thing for the cage free brown eggs, in my crazy head they taste better to me than the regular ones.

Yesterday I thought of you when I got salad, chili and a baked potato from Wendy’s :)

I am excited to watch the Olympic trials! I have a few friends down here running Htown. I hope Davila gets in too.

Reply

DANG, 16 days…you rock!! I am so glad that you had a wonderful meal at Wendy’s:)

Reply

I was going to start mine today like SR, but it is already NOT looking good … 5PM and still in PJs … :(

Reply

I am still in PJs too! No running for me. I will start tomorrow:)

Reply

I LOVE Desi! I met her at the NYCM expo and she was so nice! Also, living in Boston it was so exciting to see her come so close to winning!! Her and Kara are the top two I’m routing to make the team!

Reply

YOU MET HER!?!?! That is the coolest thing ever. I am with you about wanting her and Kara for sure!

Reply

I definitely have food streaks! I’ve had oatmeal, chocolate protein powder and peanut butter every day for breakfast for about 6 months. I stick to something I like and never change. I don’t think I’ve ever run more than maybe 4/5 days in a row – I always take a rest day or at least mix it up with yoga/cycling.

Reply

Your bfast sounds incredibly healthy! I am all about rest days too…my running streaks don’t last very long.

Reply

i ran against desiree davila in high school, so it’s super cool to see how far she has come! hope she gets her goal ;)

Reply

You ran agains Desiree….that is the coolest thing ever!

Reply

I love having cereal for lunch or chobani and granola or go lean crunch or something. totally with you. was going to have that today for lunch but had pink berry instead. thanks for the info on the trials. i am out of the loop on this but now totally want to learn more

Reply

I want pink berry for lunch! Click on some of the links above and you can read all about the trials, you will love it!

Reply

my personal running streak was 6 days. i’m done, lol.

Reply

Hey, six days is a lot longer than I have ever gone ha! Great job Hillary!

Reply

Davila and Flannagan are my faves! I’m hoping both make the Olympic team. :)

I ran 1,650 miles in 2011, up about 400 from the previous year. And I’m totally into food streaks. Hubby likes to tease me that I eat the same lunch for about six months and then switch to something else. Probably dates back to college where I’d cook a delicious meal and then be eating leftovers forever afterward.

Reply

1650….way to go Karen! You are incredible!! I love eating leftovers for as long as possible:) Great job!

Reply

This was fun to read because my hubby surprised me for Christmas and we are going to watch the Olympic trials! (We live in TX.) I’m really excited to see her and Kara, and Shalane, and Ryan Hall.

Reply

Andrea that is the coolest thing ever. Your husband is the greatest. Take lots of pictures for me okay:) Ryan Hall is one of my faces too.

Reply

Ha, I meant faves not faces

Reply

I can’t wait to watch the Olympics this summer! My hubby & I were just talking about that today. I kept track of my miles… I ran 2105 miles in 2011. I wanted to run 2011 miles in 2011 and I did it! Lots of fun.

Reply

DANG SARA….2105 miles, that is incredible!! What is your 2012 goal?

Reply

Thank you! For 2012, I want to run marathon #2 and actually enjoy it! My first marathon was pretty miserable… I’d also like to run sub 3:20 but we’ll see how training goes.

Reply

Kara and Shalane!

I have to admit to being worried about Kara. She’s kicking butt, but it’s been a hard year for her and there are some seriously competent faster women out there that have not had babies, hip injuries and new coaches in the past year. But, you never know.

Reply

Seriously, I don’t know how she bounced back so quickly after her stress fracture and after her baby too! We shall see:)

Reply

Hey Janae!

I was thinking of you today on my long run, on one of your posts you wrote about when you are tired you pump your arms :) It kept me going. I am running the Houston marathon on the 15th and can’t wait to watch the trails on the 14th!!!! It will be so amazing and inspiring to be there and see those women!!!

Reply

Denae!! I am so happy that the pumping arms thing helped you!! I am stoke for you to run Houston and I want to hear all about it! Take lots of pictures!

Reply

I ran 300 last year. I keep track of them on dailymile.com. My goal is 600 this year. I did 5 this morning, but it was pure misery.

Reply

WAHOO!!! LINDY!!! Way too go and you started off this year with a strong awesome run.

Reply

Aww..you always know how to make me feel better! You are a terrific person!

Reply

I’m a big Kara Goucher fan so I really hope she gets a spot too!

Reply

Isn’t she the cutest thing ever?!?!

Reply

I can’t even imagine being able to run that fast! 1st marathon in 2:44? Amazing. I’m on an egg streak, too – I eat at least 2/day. Easy, cheap, perfect protein. Also on a daily apple streak after not eating one for months…and dark chocolate + almonds. I eat those everyday, too. :)

Reply

Seriously, her FIRST marathon!! Eggs really are the perfect food. I need to buy some almonds…do you eat them as a snack?

Reply

loveeee cereal all day!
I am cheering for Desi and Shalane! gosh I am so excited to watch the Trials, I can’t stop reading about them! I hope we are there in 4-years!
love u Janae!! xoxo!

Reply

Hey gorgeous! You better believe we will be there in four years. Heck, you are going to qualify THIS year! LOVE YOU!

Reply

Shalane is my fav!!!

Reply

She is adorable! I am rooting for her too!

Reply

Those runners are amazing. I’m pretty picky so I eat the same foods all the time – bagelwichs, yogurt, oatmeal, chocolate chip pancakes.

Reply

Chocolate chip pancakes daily, you are my kind of girl Heather:)

Reply

Happy New Year! I don’t usually go on food streaks because i burn out way to easy and then refuse to eat it for months! I logged 1078 miles in 2011 – my goal was 1000 – so i was excited to kick it’s butt! Started off 2012 strong with 5.25 miles this morning! Woo hoo!

Reply

DANG!!! Wahoo….you smoked your own goal and I can’t wait to see what you pull off in 2012. Great run today!

Reply

I hope Desiree, Shalane, and Kara make the team. My 3 faves! I will be watching and cheering loudly. Also excited for the men’s race. Love watching Ryan Hall race.

Reply

Those are my three favorites too. Ryan Hall is awesome and probably the most optimistic person ever, I love it!

Reply

My cousin’s wife is running in the trials. Her name is Kasie Enman. She placed 7th in the last trial. She won the World Mountain Running championship this year! She is awesome and crazy fast!

Reply

WHAT….that is so so cool!! I will be cheering her on from my TV and it will feel like I know her since she is related to you. She WON the World Mountain…wow!

Reply

I love that Desiree trains in Michigan; I’m definitely cheering for her to win as well! It’s such an exciting time!

As for food, I eat a banana at breakfast and an apple at lunch or for an afternoon snack every day. If I don’t, I just feel funny by the end of the day. Have to eat my fruit!

Reply

Lisa, that is such a great habit that you have going on. I am the same way with apples too…my life feels wrong without my daily dose:) Have a great evening.

Reply

Would you mind sharing the blogs you read from the Olympic Trials runners?? I’m am getting really excited for the trials!! I have a friend I went to school with who qualified and I just so happy for her and I hope she does well! :) Happy New Year!

I REALLY like Desiree too! She has SO much potential- and she definitely has age on her side. As long as she stays healthy (I’m sure she will- she has awesome coaches!) I REALLY think she will go FAR…possibly (&hopefully) even an Olympic win! How awesome would that be?!

Reply

I am so so excited for the Olympics!! I;m not rooting for anyone in particular, just can’t wait to watch!
I’m kinda mad that I didn’t keep good track of my miles this year. I did here and there so I’m really not sure what it might be!
I never really have a very long running streak because I always like to take a rest day here and there, just in case!
~Jenn

Reply

Definite food streak! I go through phases of eating the same things every day except for snacks and then change it up when I get sick of it or don’t get to the store, etc. But for as long as I can remember – (at least at year!) – I have had 2 vitatops and a bit over a cup of Greek yogurt for breakfast – SOOOOOOOO good! I need breakfast as soon as I wake up too. If your Costco carries Vitatops I highly recommend! Happy New Year ( :

Reply

I love all those women runners-got to see Desiree when I spectated Boston this past year(like you I was sidelined):(.She rocks!!!
I get on eating streaks too-I was on a Lunabar kick for a while recently, and I always have a mocha mid-morning almost without fail(usually after a workout).Does chocolate every day count?
I have done running streaks, but after my stress fractures last year it will be a while before I do that again!!!But awesome to anyone who can.
Happy New Year!!

Reply

You got to see Desiree…that is awesome!! I have never tried a lunabar before. Should I? Yes, chocolate definitely counts!! I am with you and don’t think I will try a streak for a few years:) How is your running going?

Reply

You should definitely try them-they are great!!!Lots of good chocolatey type flavors(s’mores, choc peppermint)-lots of good healthy ingredients too,but I usually have to eat something else cause they aren’t all that big.but great before a workout!!
Thanks for asking-running is going great:) my head is holding me back more than anything else, but I guess that’s ok.I’m biking and swimming too so that’s keeping me from too many miles.Time to sign up for a race though!!!

Reply

Hahah I could eat cereal every meal, every day. Especially the sugary-kid cereal. Yum! My longest running streak I think was 12 days when I was marathon training. I didn’t keep track of my miles this past year, but in 2012 I really would like to!

Reply

I love your streak. It made me laugh out loud. You’re so funny! I saw Desiree in Boston this year and she ran by at mile 25. It was pretty awesome!!!

Reply

ive been on a food streak with yogurt for at least a year now (2-3 times a day) and ive had a running coffee streak for about 10 years…which may be sad because I’m 22, but I blame my dad.
love the Olympic hopefuls recap

Reply

happy new year to u!!! hmm, a cereal streak, i definitly think i could get on board with that one! :)

i didn’t tally up my yearly mileage, but it’s fun to see others who did. unfortunately i’ve been dealing with some injuries so i’m sure my total would be embarrassingly low! haha.

oh the trials…i have to say i’m gonna have to be rooting for my girl Kara Goucher! but i’d like Desi and Shalane to make the team too…but i’m also pulling for Deena…ahh, so many great women, will be so exciting to watch!

Reply

I think they’re making a documentary about the women training for the Olympic trials. I can’t wait for THAT to come out!

I’m interested to see how Magdalena Lewy Boulet does because I was just reading that her coach is THE Jack Daniels and he lives all the way in NC and she is in the Bay Area. Interesting, huh?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Reply

Definitely cheering for Kara! And I am definitely on an oatmeal streak…eek!

Ran just over 600 in 2011…pretty excited about it, as I had barely run over 3 miles at a time before the start of the year.

Reply

Happy new year!
sadly, no running streaks for me, but getting into a steady running routine is a goal of mine for 2012.
For food, I am majorly on an egg’s kick right now – mostly in poached form. mmmm

Reply

Running streak … hmmm … 20 days -ish for me. I find my workouts improve after rest days, and can’t get into the streak thing … except for nightly ice cream … there I’d like to get my streak up into the 1000’s.
My brother does the “streak” and is somewhere over 1000 days … closing in on 1100 when I saw him over Christmas. Speaking of the bro and the olympics … he and his wife are heading to Olympic trials in Oregon this June. Not bad, eh?

Reply

I eat a bowl of Multigrain Cheerios pre-workout every morning and have one egg with one egg white for lunch. This has been going on for the past 2 weeks or so. I ran out of cereal today though so either I run to the store in the morning or break my streak.

Reply

Can’t wait to follow the marathon trials….My favorites are Davilla and McKaig are my two young favorites. I’m always rooting for Goucher and Flanagan as well.

Not sure of my longest running streak, but maybe I can tell you at the end of 2012 if I can actually stick to recording my mileage.

Longest food streak – definitely greek yogurt. I’m addicted! Ice cream probably is right up there too!

Happy New Year!

Reply

Yes, love Desiree! I just finished reading the article about her in RW. Can’t wait for the trials!! YIPPEEEE!!!

A food streak?? I’m in. Now I just need to narrow it down because there are several things I could eat every day.

Reply

oh wow, you gals are hardcore. I just love that about ya.

No streaks here, just aiming to strive! hehe.
Happy New Year!

can you tell me the blogs of olympic-trial runners?! I’d love to read. And I’ll see you at the trials in 2016….we can do it! 2:46, right? 6:20 pace? I’ll start training in 2014.

Reply

I would say I’m on a peanut butter streak but I’ve kinda gone off it lately…I feel like a traitor to the blog world haah! If anything, I’m on a yogurt streak…and I’m talking twice-a-day kinda streak! And wow these girls are hardcore…a sub-5min mile is serious stuff!

Reply

Cereal streaks…oh yes. I’ve been good about it actually. I would say my food streak at the moment are protein pancakes and grapefruits!

Reply

Google Ariana Hilborn. Will blow your mind. I’m cheering for her trials day :)

Reply

my coach is running in the olympic trials – I’m routing for her! :-D lol well, she has so far only made the B-standard time as this is her first trials and she’s only a few years older than me, so she’s not gunning for a spot on the team. As for the contenders, I gotta say I’m routing for Shalane!!

Reply

That’s awesome!!!!! She’s super fast! :D Pretty sure that I’m on a chocolate streak…..that has gone on for my entire life! haha

Reply

WOW, those women are crazy and freakishly [in a good way] amazinggg! I have never kept track of how many days in a row I’ve run but usually I’ll workout 5-7 days a week and take a day off… Now I feel lazy having a “rest” day haha :P

Food streaks: apples, pears, grapefruits, Greek yogurt, and popcorn… Also, VitaTops and ice cream [YUM]!

Reply

My longest run streak is in the 100ish days. Last year I ran straight starting in September. It was pretty awesome. I had to stop, though, when i started training for longer races.

I ran 2,300 miles in 2011. Yikes.

I pretty much eat the same thing for lunch everyday, so I guess i’m on a bagel, yogurt, and carrots streak. Good lord I’m boring.

Reply

I would love to see you have more of the woman on your blog that are competing. They are def my heros too and I love reading about them.

Reply

That is awesome that the trials are in Houston! Being a native Houstonian, I take pride in the city that I lived in for 27 years and still visit often, since my family lives there. I can’t wait for the summer Olympics!

Reply

My boyfriend and his running team are going to Houston to catch the trials and run in the marathon on the 15th with these epic running legends! They’re so excited and I’ve heard the word “Houston” more times in 2011 than ever before :P Can’t wait to see the finishing times!

Reply

I’m really excited about the Olympic trials, too! I’m running Houston Sunday, so plan to watch what I can of the race on Saturday… pretty exciting! I do track my running miles, but on paper so I don’t have an easy way to tally it all up, though it’s somewhere around 1,000. I plan to track the yearly # this year!

Reply

I did a 6 day running streak!

This is so gonna be you in a few years! So excited!

I ran the entire month of June in 2011. My total mileage for 2011 was 1841.33 miles ran.

Cereal. ever since I became pregnant, I crave cereal all the time!!

I live in Rochester, MI where Desi is from and having met her, I can honestly say that Desi Davila is one of the nicest and most humble people I have ever met in my life, athlete or not.

I coached Girls on the Run this past fall, and had asked Desi (they’re friends) to come and speak to our Girls on the Run group and the girls were truly all star-struck and Desi was absolutely amazing with the girls, thoroughly and thoughtfully answering each and every one of their questions. Her rapport with the girls was incredible.

I can’t wait to see how well she does next weekend!!!

Just thought I would share.

Reply

So, um… part of my paragraph got cut out. *oops*

My GOTR co-coach is good friends with Desi. She asked her if she would be interested in speaking with our group of girls one night. So Desi took time out of her busy schedule — Seriously. BUSY! — to come to practice.
