Small Indulgence Question For You.

Is it normal that the first thing that I get excited for about having a day off from work is the fact that I get to fit in a good run. This means that I don’t have to rush around the house like a madwoman, I can get in a good stretch afterwards and maybe even an ice bath.  Let’s get crazy and say that I will actually have the time to make something delicious to refuel with and maybe even be somewhat hygienic.

Doesn’t the world understand that we as runners need to work less and have less responsibilities so that we can train properly?

Yesterday was a good day of food.  I had breakfast before church but then Billy made some crepes for us to eat while watching The Office and preparing for my BIG INTERVIEW (the highlight of my year).

We went over to my parent’s house because we hadn’t seen the little crazies for quite some time.

My left leg is now a lot stronger than my right after a night of carrying her everywhere.  This better not cause any imbalances in my legs and therefore an injury.

We had roast, brown rice and green beans for dinner but the picture wasn’t pretty so I decided to skip it, it was quite delicious.

Some people chose to have cereal for dessert but because I am so wise and know that cereal counts as a snack and not a dessert,

I chose a lemon bar for dessert.

When I go to wash my face and brush my teeth for the night I really love it when I find powdered sugar on my lips and syrup from the crepes that morning in my hair.

What would be the small indulgence that you would chose to have?!?!

What are your plans for today?  Any special things going on your day off (if you have it off)?

I don’t get today off, so I will have to leave for work in a few. The joys of being an adult ;).

Reply

If I had to choose a small indulgence, it would be always having some sort of chocolate baked treat in the house. :D No day off for me…just school

Reply

One small indulgence would be dinner out with the BF every Saturday night.

Second and third runner up is a massage and pedicure or the weekly house cleaning (esp. is laundry is included!!) :)

Have a great day off!

Reply

Haha your dad is so low-maintenance…LOVE it! I would kill for someone to think of my meals every single day…even better if they are willing to prepare them ;)! Another indulgence that would be make me extremely happy is not having to work on Saturdays. This whole ‘working half days on Saturdays’ that most workplaces in Mumbai have going on is really not cool!

Reply

I would go with a pedicure every week!

Reply

Somebody to make all my meals. That’s might be big.. But they could make me SMALL meals so it totally counts!

Reply

I love days off school for that same exact reason too. We were with friends last night and one of them asked what my big plans were for the day off, and I immediately replied “A LONG RUN!!!” So nice not to have to rush around or wake up early for it. Hope you have a great runt today Janae!

Reply

I would have every meal already prepared for me when I arrived in the kitchen, cooked just the way I like and in my favorite bowl (because everything tastes better in a bowl). No day off for me! I work 8:30 to 6. Yum.

Reply

Haha – I love your dad’s answer! Could someone give me an extra day each week lol? It would just be for resting, cooking, and hanging out with daniel. If not, I’ll definitely take a leg and foot massage every week!

Reply

Gosh, that is a tough questions. I think the small indulgence that I would chose is an extra hour (or two, or three) of “me” time to relax and recoup from my busy days.

Reply

Don’t have the day off :( Came to work early! and I don’t think they turned on the heat until at least 7am.. because it was freakin’ cold when I got here.

I would choose extra time! to exercise, read blogs, whatever.. I just hate feeling rushed! But I love your massage idea… a shoulder massage every day would be so so good!

Reply

i’m totally with you on the massage, pedicure, and facial! sounds PERFECT. ;) enjoy your day off!

Reply

Someone else to deep clean my house at least once a month!!

Reply

A live at home barista (preferably tall dark handsome) with the best coffees and a massage once a week with my coffee.

I plan on procrastinating and watching Tv with a side of pinterest.

Enjoy your day off!! And don’t worry, I found cookie batter in my hair yesterday. Totally normal.

Reply

Hey–tell your sis to check Harry and David TODAY–huge sale–I’m buying. I LOVE their fruit. My favorite indulgence—small you say–hmm-a massage! e

Reply

OH I like your Mom’s idea..and I also like yours…

I know what you and your family can get your sister for her birthday and Christmas next year ;)

Reply

Mine would be to have my clothes magically be clean again and hung up after I wear them! I have a really hard time keeping my closet organized and hate doing laundry (especially hand washing). That is my plan for today actually is to get caught up on all that.

Reply

I wish I had today off. Can my small indulgence be having a four day work week every week?

Reply

If I could have an indulgence it would be either a weekly pedicure or a new flavor of ice cream in my freezer daily :)
On my day off I am catching up on the Biggest Loser, getting a good workout in, scrapbooking, getting my hair done, and making Thai curry chicken for the first time!

Reply

Enjoy your day! We have off as well, which means instead of a 4:30 wake up to fit the training in, I will take the kids to the gym and then treat them to swimming afterwards! Small indulgence – a sub for me in the afternoons so I can work out at a decent hour every day.

Reply

I would want a massage every other day, PLUS a personal chef!!!!

Reply

My indulgence would definitely have to be the massage/pedi, but if I could shoot for the moon, I would ask for a work schedule that was pushed back two hours: School starts at 10am and gets out at 5pm. That way, I could still sleep in a decent amount, run without being that madwoman you refenced, and get out of work before the sun goes down =)

Reply

Hmmm. Being that it’s Monday morning, I’m tired and now very jealous that you have the day off… haha does having Mondays off work (paid of course) count as a small indulgence?? No? Ok, I would like my dishes to magically wash themselves. I hate washing them!

Reply

I am sooo with you on the massage indulgence :D

Reply

I like the house cleaner once a week please :)
You lucky US people are off today!? haha. Sadly, we aren’t!

Reply

Janae – BLEND Registration is now open! Are you planning to come? Would you mind talking about it in a post sometime?

Reply

someone to wash the dishes. love cooking. hate doing dishes.
pedicure is a close second.

Reply

I would love a 3-day weekend EVERY weekend with my husband. 2 days isn’t nearly enough to wind down from the stress of the big, bad city!

Reply

I think I would pick a fridge stocked with fresh fruit at all times. I go through fruit so fast and it gets expensive! I’d also take someone to clean my bathroom weekly (or monthly…)

Reply

that interview was AWESOME. sub-hour half marathon? is he loco. im in awe.

ps massage!!!!

Reply

Haha love this! Your brothers sounds a lot like Torrances… he always says he wishes he could have a new pair of socks everyday.
And I agree with your mom… someone to clean my house for me :)
Actually… I would love it if cake had no calories so I could eat it at every meal.

Reply

Uh, can I join in on your small indulgence- sounds perfect to me! Maybe with a good meal thrown in too, if that’s not asking too much ;P

Reply

umm I LISTENED to the whole interview and I LOVE YOU you are so so cute and secondly COOLEST THING IN THE FREAKING WORLD!!!! so jealous!
day off for me too!!!!!= time to catch up on all my hw:(
buttttt let me see one small indulgence : getting my groceries delivered to my door once a week..heck once a month i dont care i just want that!!!

Reply

I’ve got off from work for MLK Jr Day too. And no one can complain because all of my friends that don’t work in education had off for New Year’s on Monday, January 2nd while I was working. I’m secretly (or not so secretly) hoping to find a part time or .8 (4 days/week) job when we move out to Cali next month.

Speaking of Harry & David – my husband’s aunt and uncle sent us a box of pears from there and they are AWESOME. For an indulgence, I like the idea of someone else cleaning my apartment once in a while. I’m good with the laundry, just some help with the heavy duty bathroom/kitchen cleaning would be cool.

Reply

I would love it if my school could start like 30-45 minutes later each morning so I could make breakfast and actually enjoy my morning coffee. That is one of the best things about these holidays off- go for a run, then come home and make a nice, leisurely breakfast. I’m relaxed just thinking about it! :)

Today I’m having lunch with my mom and my grandpa…it’s going to be a great day!

Reply

Small indulgence would be having someone clean my house. You can’t go wrong with that. I would have a good run today, but still can’t due to injury.

Reply

No day off, but getting a run in and then playing trivia after work :)

Reply

Blue Bell mint chocolate chip ice cream. Hands down. Ok, I’ve never made crepes but those look so good? What recipe do y’all use? Are they “single girl in the kitchen who can’t cook” proof?!

Reply

i’m definitely with you on the massage indulgence!!

i’m working today but hoping it’ll be slow..its ok though, if i did have off, kevin is still working so i wouldve just been home alone. i get off for presidents day though! :)

Reply

Does a once a week chef/cooking class count as small? I guess I could go every other week. While things are baking, cooking, frying, he/she can also massage my shoulders. OK, prob now I’m pushing it.

So excited for a run today in my new trail shoes. Then it’s lots of laundry, shopping, and finally getting back into the groove after almost 2 weeks of vacation!

Reply

Imma gonna run. Imma gonna run far.

small indulgence? a babysitter once a week.

Reply

my small indulgence would be a weekly mani/pedi too! it makes you feel so nice and girly but its def something i hardly ever do for myself!

my day started with 30 Day Shred and a 3.5 mile run (my 1st winter outdoor run at 15 degrees- i loved it!) and now im at work til 630 followed by my fav spin class of the week!

Reply

Small indulgence… hmm I’d like someone to do my grocery shopping for me.

I do have today off and I and going to recover from my half marathon I did yesterday!

Reply

The cleaning one! And right now that would include organizing from our move. I am tapering this week, so a day off is perfect for extra laziness and stretching!

Reply

Oh boy…I think mine would be to always have a good cup of tea. I live for tea. Or a automatic refilling peanut butter jar. :)

Reply

Hahah I think I’d go with your indulgence. Or having a money tree in the backyard so I could buy what I want when I want? Lets pretend that’s small.

Reply

We have school today……boo. I know exactly the feeling you descibe with the non-school run…….enjoy and consider me officially jealous.

Indulgence: Personal shopper to replace all my staple classics, that I consider kind of boring to shop for. Nothing like wearing a new outfit…….only to pair it with scuffed black pumps, an off black jacket (that is suppossed to be black), grey gloves that look like I found them in a snowbank on the side of the road.

Reply

I TOTALLY agree that runners need less responsibilities/to work less!! haha! but i’m a tad biased ;)

i have today off (woo!) but i’m forcing a rest day upon myself…..Boo. My shins will thank me later. So instead I might hit up the mall/ be a lazy TV bum all day!

Reply

small indulgent: a massage after every long run! it doesn’t have to be HOURS long, either. i’d be fine with 30 minutes (and then bribe them with fruits and veggies and coffee and hot chocolate to make them stay a bit longer!)

plans for today: it’s a rest day for me today, so a whole lot of nothing until 530 when i have to go to school (i take evening classes mondays & thursdays)!

Reply

My indulgence would be having someone else do my laundry. Folding Included. It is my most despised chore.

Reply

It’s a tie between someone to clean my house and do laundry once a week and gettine a weekly hour massage.

Reply

Easy answer: a set of new, freshly washed and ironed sheets on my bed everyday. If I ever get rich, that would be my one ridiculous splurge I have. Nothing like clean, crisp sheets…

Reply

I love lemonbars! They are my favorite!! I would definitely choose someone to clean my house for my small indulgence, no question. We are snowed in today so I am stuck inside. I will probably just clean (which brings us back to my small indulgence wish)

Reply

My indulgence would be freshly washed sheets every night. Unfortunately I am lazy when it comes to washing them so it doesn’t happen nearly that often.

I am off today too – spending it just being lazy and maybe some shopping later :-)

Reply

haha, when i was a kid I ONLY ate lemon bars for dessert! they had them at Bagel & Bagel (now Einstein Brothers) and I would always get one! Everyone thought I was a freak. I also loved mustard and hated ketchup. Weird child. Hmmm and I can’t decide on the indulgence. I’m torn between cake every day (that had zero effect on my weight and health…) and someone to clean my kitchen and apartment.

Reply

My small indulgence would be to have plenty of time every day to workout and not have to rush to work.
Or have the laundry magically just done, folded and put away.
Or to have enough time in a day to take an hour to just nap. That would be dreamy.

Reply

Wow, what a great question. To be able to just work part-time (is that a small indulgence or a big one??), to have a nail salon near my house (the closest good one is like 30 minutes away!), and to have a housekeeper come clean a couple of times a month!

Reply

Working today! The hospital scene continues to live on, despite the day.

An indulgence of mine is massage and chocolate!

Reply

I think new running shoes every 3 months!! While I dont go through them that often if would be nice to be able to rotate pairs and wear them casually when the milage is too high!

Reply

Hmm that’s a toughie. I’d gotta go with some sort of spa treatment – a massage every week!

Reply

A massage every week for sure. And that absolutely counts as a small indulgence.
That lemon bar looks amazing. Now I have to go make some. thanks.
That will be my indulgence for my day off!! I’m going swimming to celebrate.

Reply

Deep tissue massage every week and new shoes + new outfit (fitness) every month! <—that counts as one, promise

Reply

You share the exact same love of days off that I do – the chance to fit in a really good run/workout!!! There is nothing like it :) Makes the whole day great!

Reply

Massage.Massage.Massage. I love them and cannot afford them on a graduate assistant budget. Today’s day off is a 6.5 mile run and lots of reading for school this week.

Reply

Are there any massage schools in your area? The one where I went only charged clients $25 for an hour since they were being worked on by students. Most of the time the massages were still really awesome, and even if you got a beginner that was only okay it was generally still worth the $25. Just a thought since I’m sure being a grad asst can be stressful!

Reply

Thanks for the tip Jenny. Unfortunately I live in a pretty rural area and there is not a massage school nearby. However, next time I go visit my mom in Colorado, I will totally remember this. Also, I hate folding laundry too. So, send that maid to Wyoming when she is done folding yours. Thanks.

Reply

Day off for me! But will be spent reading textbooks and taking mini blog breaks (like this one)…so still busy, but at least no school.
My small indulgence would be to have someone else fold or hang up all my clean laundry. I don’t mind doing the laundry, but hate folding it. Which is why there is a spot on the floor next to my bed for my pile of clean clothes and a spot on the other side for my dirty ones ;)

Reply

Don’t have the day off boohoo! But happy to hear that you do. I figure as long as I have the happy and carefree mentality that I’m off that’s the same thing, right?

Small indulgences – definitely weekly massage, a healthy cooking gourmet chef, and a maid!

Reply

1- I would LOVE to have clean sheets on my bed every day…I’d love it even more if they were ironed. I heard somewhere that this happens in the White House. This is the only reason I can come up with why anyone would ACTUALLY want to be President. :)

2- I’m working. :(

Reply

I look forward to runs on my days off so much more than week day runs! Being able to run in the middle of the day when the sun is shining is such a treat :)

And as for a small indulgence… I wish I could teleport to work instead of having to take the subway (does that count?)- that would add about 2 hours to my life a day!

Reply

I choose what you did, I am always sore, my feet are a mess and my skin is dry and oily…thanks ironman training!

Reply

A home-cooked breakfast by someone once a week would be my small indulgence!

Reply

I love Friday, Saturday and Sunday (my days off) when it comes to working out, I feel like (for the most part) I can get in a good amount of exersize and not feel rushed at all, it’s quite nice. I think if I could have one indulgence of any kind, it would be that in the winter time my Tahoe was always warm when I drove to work in the morning. When I left this morning it was -31 (-39 with the windchill), I had my Tahoe running for 35 minutes and it still wasn’t freaking warm.

Reply

Had the day off and would normally take advantage of it to do a long run, but today we took my stepdaughter back to college for second semester. I completely understand where you are coming from on that one!
Once a month I would love a chiro/massage combo visit to keep the body good!

Reply

I would have to go for the massage or personal chef for small indulgence – even if it’s just once a week!

Reply

Indulgences? Only one? This is so tough! I would get a nanny for an hour a day so that I could get a small break and run one kid-less errand a day.

Reply

One small indulgence: PJ’s flavored coffee with half and half every morning!
I had to work today and my hubby was off. So he brought me flowers at work!

Reply

I just read your marathon recap!!! Holy speedy! Girl you rocked it! 3rd overall and sub 310!!!!! Way to go!

Reply

Oh goodness, I love your brothers response. When I lived where people actually wore socks, I would ask for new socks for every holiday or celebration. Socks in my Easter basket, yes please. :-) But don’t forget the candy too.
I would love to have one day a week to myself…………while my house gets cleaned. heehee

Reply

I think my indulgence would be to have a tall soy latte delivered to my desk every morning for free :)

And I totally agree that runners should be allowed shorter work hours to train! I sometimes run on my lunch and an hour is just not long enough!

Reply

Ooooo… all these things sound so great! It’s a hard choice between weekly housecleaning and having my meals planned & COOKED for me! I think meals win out. Because I’d rather spend my time cleaning than meal planning (shopping, cooking, planning ahead- bleh).

I had to work today, but I did get in a nice run this morning. One of those runs that feels great!

Reply

I’d want someone to make my bed for me daily and wash my sheets once a week. I never make my bed and am embarrassingly awful about washing my bedding.

I celebrated the day off by hitting the slopes! The mountain was surprisingly empty!

Reply

I choose either a massage every two weeks or a cleaning lady every two weeks. No wait…I choose someone to fold my laundry every week. I wash…they fold :)

Reply

Great question! I’d like Georgetown Cupcake deliveries every week with NO consequences haha!
