Spinning and Running?

This week has been a weird one.  I haven’t even attempted to get a workout in before school because of the lack of sleep and so yesterday I hit up the gym after school for a spin bike workout in the cardio cinema.

I didn’t want to be at the gym for long because I get really excited to see Billy after work so I opted for a short/high intensity workout.

1 minute sprint, 1 minute jumps, 3 minute hill climb (out of the saddle) and repeat 6 times and each time with a little higher tension.   I really love coming out of the saddle on the spin bike because it makes me feel really strong and fast plus there is no chance (okay, there is still a little chance) that I am going to fall over like I do on my road bike.

My best marathon times came when I was incorporating a lot of spin classes (along with speed work) and so I think it is really important (for me) to stay in good spinning shape.

Photo 9

I am warning you in advance to not zoom in on the legs…..come on, it is winter time people.  A little leg hair keeps one warmer in the freezing temps, it’s science.

After I got home and caught up with Billy we headed over to my parents house for dinner and to catch up with them and tell them all about Vegas.

I made a salad with shredded bbq chicken, tomatoes, snap peas and some sourdough bread.   Pears are so good right now.

Photo 8

My niece turned into a gangsta’ while I was gone.  She’s just talking to her peeps.

Photo 7

Randomness for you today:  This is a picture Billy sent to me while I was at work.  He won a twinkie for the top performance on a lab.  Our kids will have a chance for brains because of him.  I think twinkies are the one and only food filled with sugar (besides black licorice and circus peanuts) that I do not care for.

Photo 3

And since my dinner was way too healthy, I had to dig into a bag of Halloween candy that my mom was about to throw away because she said it was stale. How dare she try and throw candy away in front of me? Don’t worry, I saved it.

Photo 4

The perfect ending to the night was an episode of Chopped.  Lobster was one of the ingredients that they had to use for their appetizer and now I am craving it.  Must find some soon.

Are you a spinner?  What do you think about indoor cycling?

-I love it and I think that it is an awesome way to cross-train and make you a stronger runner.

Do you go to classes at a gym or studio?

-I used to go to about 3 a week but haven’t been to a class in way too long.  I miss them and since I am not training for anything in particular right now I have much more time to try out some new classes.

How old were you when you first got a cell phone?  (Question inspired by my little niece using her mom’s cell phone).

-I was 16.

How old were you when you first got a cell phone? (Question inspired by my little niece using her mom’s cell phone).

-I was 16. YEAH!! I had to share it with my mother. I could only use it to call for a ride home from cheerleading practice, gymnastics or a friends.

I used to Spin and loved it. But I stopped when I thought the leg beating would impact my runs. I really need to find a way to fit it back in. I went to classes at my gym.
Late 20’s for my first cell phone I think. Back when they had just come down in size (and price).

I am obsessed with spin classes. I try to get to at least 3 per week!

I miss spinning more than anything else. At Syracuse, you have to pay each semester for classes like that and I am just a bit too cheap. Except I’ll probably do it next semester so maybe I’m not THAT cheap!

I got my first cell phone in the eighth grade. A pink razr. It was a BIG DEAL

Reply

Haha no need to apologize to me for leg hair! My sister announced that she was participating in no shave november…ummm how about no shave october through april?

And no classes for me…they make you pay extra for them at my school. I’m all about the FREE gym use! But in high school I used to enjoy going to spin classes every once in a while with my mom!

I’ve never done spin, but it’s a must try. One day.

My boyfriend and I watched chopped, he’s craving something lobster too.

When I had a gym membership I loved spinning and went 3+ times a week. Now I don’t have a gym membership or a job schedule that would let me get morning spins in. I was okay with it for a while but now I miss it! I’m trying to convince The Husband that I *need* an indoor bike trainer for our anniversary….

Spinning … awesome. And I think it definitely helps with running. But I have a harder time spinning without an actual class, and good music. 27 before I got my first cell phone.

Reply

I’ve been spinning several times, and I did enjoy it, but b/c of scheduling, it has been hard for me to get to a class.
My first “real” cell phone was the year after I graduated from college, and on my own. I had had a “bag phone” in college, but I don’t think it really counts, b/c I could only use if it was plugged in to the cigarette lighter! LOL

Reply

Love love love SPINNING!!! My speed is always at its best when I’m spinning once /twice a week!

Reply

That bit about seeing Billy after work made me ‘awww’! There are few exercise which I find compares with running in terms of intensity- spinning definitely fits the bill! I don’t have classes nearby me so I don’t spin as regularly as I would love to- fab workout for sure!

Reply

I belong to an indoor coached cycling class, it is not a “spinning” class. We are coached by a USALevel1 cycling coach and he is an elite racer. I used to go to spinning classes, most were unqualified to teach such a thing and never even rode competitively outdoors. I found more people got injured this way, including myself. Now that will never happen as we bring our own road/tri bikes and train on indoor trainers. I love it and you are correct, this WILL help your running…good for you!!!!

Reply

Spinning is great, but it sometimes makes me miss riding my bike outside!

I got my first cell phone when I was 16. It was gigantic!

Reply

Question, I may have missed it, but how come you haven’t been teaching spin anymore? I remember you always getting so excited about it and posting all of your awesome playlists and I noticed the other day that we haven’t seen one in a while!

I’m supposed to be taking a break from blogging and the internet…coming here should show you just how much I love you!

Those shoes are hot. My current shoes (Asics Landreth 7s) are gold/gray/white… i know that sounds heinous but they’re actually pretty cool looking!

I’m not a spinner. I must confess, I hate biking, so I never really saw the thrill of biking in place :).

I used to take classes at the gym, but when we got a dog, I didn’t really have time anymore because I had to go home to walk her after work.

I think I got a phone when I was 16 or 17 and I think it was less so I could call people and more so my parents could find me.

I’m so jealous of the cardio cinema… but happy for you that you SAVED THAT CANDY from your mom! Good grief! WE DON’T THROW CANDY AWAY AROUND HERE!

I have just started using a spin bike but I haven’t taken any classes yet. I’d like to though. I was surprised at how tough of a workout it can be!
I got my first phone when I was 16 too. My brother has one though, and he is 10!!

Reply

I love LOVE spin class! I typically don’t go in the summer cause I’d rather ride outside, but now that it’s winter, I’m all about it–I even went last night. I try to go twice a week so that I can mix it in with everything else. My gym offers lots of classes, so there is usually one that works.

I got my first cell phone when I was a freshman in college, but it was for emergencies only (thanks, dad!) And it had a huge antenna and I had to lean out of my dorm window for it to actually work. My first REAL cell wasn’t till I was like 19-20…..but I did have a pager, thank you very much :)

Reply

I used to take spin classes 2-3 times a week but haven’t been in over a year now. My gym offers them for free but I do not really like the class times. I usually stay away from classes only so I can go to the gym (and leave) when I want.
I got my first cell for my 18th birthday – but always stole my Mom’s the 2 years before that.

Reply

I love spinning and do find that that incorporating it into my week helps to keep me injury free and my next run is always more awesome…and my gym has like 3 options a day LOVE IT…that having been said I think they could improve on the seats…they are so very tiny and cause lingering cowboy walking!

This is going to date me…but in high school I had a pager, not a cell phone. When you think about it… how silly are pagers…you need a phone to call someone back duh But my teenager did not get her phone until 15 and apparently she was the only one her age who didn’t have one :P

Have a great day!

Reply

Love spinning, but haven’t done it since I switched gyms about a year and a half ago.

I don’t take the classes at my gym. They are $10 extra a month and there aren’t any I am interested in taking during the times I would be able to go.

Cell phone: I was 22, but I am 38, so there you go. Ok, so I am working on a theory here about cell phones. I work with a few people in their early twenties and 2 of them said their parents bought them a cell phone after 9/11 (so they were about 15/16 years old). I know this may be specific to my geography, but it makes sense. They said the line for the pay phone at their school was so long and the office phones were going crazy trying to get in touch with their kids to let them know they were OK.

Reply

I LOVE spin! (I actually am looking into getting certified to teach!) It’s great to hear that your fastest times came when you were spinning. I’m hoping to incorporate a ton of running and TRX over the next year so I can smoke a fall marathon next year!

Reply

I do go to spin. I am a bodypump devotee and go at LEAST once a week.
-aside- Avalee has the same jams as your niece.
I was 17 when I got my first cell.

Reply

Ahh I hateee twinkies. There’s just something about that softness that grosses me out. I was a sugar monster when I was a kid and didn’t even like them then.
I used to be obsessed with spin. I would go at least 3 days a week! I haven’t been in forever though because I’d been focusing all my time on running.
I go to some strength classes at my gym when I don’t feel like putting together my own.
My first cell was in 8th or 9th grade! I remember begging for one forever and finally got one. Nowadays, kids get them so young!

Reply

I got my first cell in grade 8 .. I was .. 13? Maybe 14? It was only for emergencies .. Bah, everything is an emergency when your 14.

I’ve never taken a spin class but I really want to try, I’ve actually never taken ANY sort of class.

Reply

Ha…everything really was an emergency in jr. high. I think you should definitely try out SPIN or another class!

Silly mom! Halloween candy doesnt go stale!

Im also curious where your niece got her pajamas.. and if they come in big people sizes…?

I know…what was she thinking. I think she got them at target…..I don’t think they do but I could definitely custom sew you a pair:)

I love spinning classes! I take them at my gym. Or try, the 515am class is the only one that fits into my schedule and I am bad at waking up, even though I love it!

I love spin class!!! The music is always awesome and it gets me in such a great mood!

I don’t like twinkies either!! My husband was in twinkie eating contest when he was younger and he won! Yuck….

I would love to start spinning, but don’t have it around to do right now. I loved taking classes when I was in college and had a gym to go to. No gym around right now here in rural Iowa. Lots of DVDs and outside workouts for me.

First cell phone when I was 15 or 16 when I started driving.

Reply

I used to love spinning, but my gym gave up the bikes and no longer has the class. The last time I took a spin class was on vacation in Mexico. I do not take any classes at the gym, now I just run. I keep a day pass at the gym for very hot or cold, snowy days.

Reply

I finally tried spinning and i LOVE IT!!! I think it is helping with my running so much already!

I signed up for Gold’s Gym to take spinning and eventually try body pump! My other gym doesn’t have classes but has a great weight room and cardio machines.

I was in 7th grade when I got my first cell phone… and I still have the same number!! So weird but awesome!

Reply

you and billy are too cute…i get real excited when i get the chance to see Kev after work too :)

i LOVE spinning…i took at least 2 classes a week right around the time i started running..i would take classes at my old gym..then i gave up my gym membership last january to save $$ and use my work gym…so i didnt have a chance to spin for a good 9 months :( finally after signing up at my new gym I am back into spinning..YAY. i love it in so many ways I can barely count it..but i think its an excellent, fun workout. p.s. i’ve been thinking of buying spinning shoes, is it worth the plunge?

i was 16 when i got my first cell and I paid for it with my own money…my parents werent willing to get me one ;) but i see kids nowadays around 8 or 9 with cell phones and it completely freaks me out! -_-

I didn’t get a cell phone till I was around 23, but they were just getting to be the norm then. I’m old.
Now we are trying to decide when to get our kids one, that’s a tough question.

Unfortunately, there are no spin classes at the gym I normally go to. I do like them though.. such a good workout.
I normally don’t go to the classes.. but once in awhile it’s a nice change. I LOVE zumba!! Have you ever been to a zumba class?

That salad looks extremely appealing to my hungry eyes! And the Halloween candy. Who would ever throw out that treasure sack!?

Your niece is ‘cute as a button’.

Reply

This might be a dumb questions but I have never taken a spin class :) Do the pedals have clips? And do they fit all of the bike cleats or do you have to have a specific one? I’ve seen people talking about buying shoes for spinning so I was wondering how that works. I mostly ride outside but I want to get a trainer so I can do it at home through the winter!

I take yoga classes at a studio. I can run outside the entire year so no gym membership for me!

I got my first cell phone at 16 when I started driving.

Reply

I didn’t get a cell phone until after college. By I grew up in the “beeper era” so cell phones only got popular then.

Reply

I used to spin but stopped for a while and now my gym doesn’t offer it. I really liked it though. I go to classes at my gym. It keeps me motivated when there are other people to work out with. I am embarrassed to say I didn’t get a cell phone until I was 25ish.

The best diet is one that aims to be healthy rhtaer than focusing on losing weight. A healthy meal plan would be something like.Breakfast = porridge or muesli.Lunch = mixed bean salad with cottage cheese or avocado with lemon juice/olive oil/salt on wholemeal toast.Dinner = grilled fish, brown rice and salad or grilled chicken, houmus and salad in wholemeal pitta.Snacks = sticks of celery, carrot, red pepper and cucumber and/or roasted almonds.

Reply

I didn’t know that wrapped candy would go stale?! As long as the chocolate hasn’t bloomed (when it gets that white look because the milk fat has separated away from the cocoa) its good in my book!

Just took my first spin class yesterday, and I liked it. I took it at my gym and the teacher was a bit stale, but I can see how it can be addicitng. Now I just have to find a class with a great teacher that doesn’t cost me zillions of dollars per class!

Reply

I looove spinning, but don’t belong to a gym anymore, and rarely get to any of the “drop-in” classes. When I used to go, it was at a gym, but they had a private “spin studio” room upstairs – pretty cool, but $75/mo for a gym membership wasn’t happening anymore in this economy!

I was 15 or 16 when I got my first cell phone… basically, if I was out with my friends, my parents wanted a way to get ahold of me.

When I was injured I did classes at the gym all the time. Spin and bodypump. Since I’ve started running and am training for a January race, I don’t go anymore. I just run outside.
This will show my old age- I got my first cell phone my freshman year in college in 1998. It was huge and NO one had them then. I missed my mom too much and needed a way to call her all the time ;).
I have 3 pairs of shoes I rotate- my favorites are blue and pink!

Love your niece, she’s so darn cute! I was 16, but had to “share” it with my brother. I was older and smarter so I put a pink case on it so he wouldn’t want to use it and pretty much got it 98% of the time. haha It was also 1998 though when I was 16, so cell phones weren’t really out much before then. I see kids that are in elementary school with them now. It’s crazy!

I’ve actually never done spinning before but I’ve always wanted to try it! Are you a spinner? What do you think about indoor cycling?
Spin is absolutely a great way to make you a stronger runner. I feel like it strenghtens your glutes and hamis which help you run hills better!

Do you go to classes at a gym or studio?
I used to hit up Turbo Kick once a week and spinning twice, but now I just stick to spinning. I try and get in at least one class a week, but work makes it difficult to get to class in time.

How old were you when you first got a cell phone? (Question inspired by my little niece using her mom’s cell phone).
I think I was 18 when I got my first cell phone, but I can’t remember. I do know that I had to hide it from my parents because they thought they were unnecessary, so maybe I was younger than 18…

Totally agree about spinning making you a stronger runner. I spin once a week during marathon training and consider it one of my hard days, not just ‘cross training’!
I’m pretty sure my first cell phone was a hand-me-down from my mom, I think I was about 16…that bulky Nokia phone that EVERYONE had.

I think spin might help with speed!

Do you like French fried onions (the things on top of green bean casserole?) I have been putting them on my salads this week for a little salty crunch…..try it……well, only if you like those.

The only class I ever go to is yoga. But when I act 10 and still need to play, I play spin class in our basement like I am the instructor. Even created a play list or two for the purpose. :)

I started using the spin bike @ the gym a couple of months ago and can’t get enough of it- it’s even starting to put ideas in my head to do a mini trathlon?! Who am I?

I got a cell phone when I was in 6th or 7th grade?! I really only got it because I was traveling a lot for AAU sports and my younger brother was really sick [in the hospital] so my parents needed to be able to reach me whenever. BUT, it was def not something to brag about- it was dubbed, “the red brick” because it was red and rectangular [duh] and it was one of those Nextel walkie-talkie ones. Talk about ooober dork :P

Love love love spinning. Finally went last night!

I also REALLY believe that spinning helps with long distance endurance running!!

It helps me train in different heart rate zones and I really think it helps out those FAST twitch muscles.

Hi! I’m a new running blogger and just found you… I look forward to following along! I fell in love with spinning this summer while recovering from an injury. I still go 3X/ week though I’ll back off as I add more miles in. I definitely think it can help with speed too!

Reply

I definitely think spinning has the potential to increase cardiovascular fitness without the impact of running – my best times were from when I was doing a lot of spinning too. The key is to keep pushing yourself, though – that’s obviously not an issue for you, but I have a tendency to slack off when a coach says ‘resistance 7 or 8’ in particular. 9 or 10 I can do, but those mid-resistances I tend to be lazy and be at more of a 6 level.

There’s a spinning studio in my gym, so I suppose my answer to that part of the question is ‘both’.

Cellphones? I got one when I was 13 – I think anything younger than 11 is a bit unnecessary?

I know I’m terribly late on this, but congrats on your Vegas time!

Your mom is nuts! It’s chocolate – it takes forever to go stale! (I must say this because I still have bags of post-halloween sale candy in my cupboard).

Are you a spinner? What do you think about indoor cycling?

-I took at least one spinning class that I remember, several years ago. I love the concept, and since you say it helps marathoning, I’ m all over it!

Do you go to classes at a gym or studio?

-I love dance classes at my gym. The only problem is that they are at awkward times. There’s one that I love that is at 7:30 Monday nights, so if I take it I am exhausted for my Tuesday run, which just does not work. Since winter is here I might be switching up my runs to afternoons, so maybe I’ll be back to the class I love! Yay!

Reply

I haven’t tried spinning yet but it’s on the list! I’ve been intimidated but know I’ll love it.

I love classes because if it’s not a cardio machine I completely lose focus & they get me to try new things – that said I need to go to more because I have a good number of choices.

I was 14 when I got my first cell (’00) – we all had the same square Nokia mini one. We’ve circled back & now all have iphones.

On any given day, I’d pick cycling (better mtb) over spinning class. But it’s quick and easy and I’m a wimp about biking in cold weather.

Reply

This is awesome, I discovered the beauty of this workout combo last spring! I have a gym membership and a lot of days I’ll do a 25 minute spin session followed by a 2-3 mile treadmill run. I also have my bike on a trainer at home so I use that a lot too, especially when I’m running outdoors. I love how my legs feel when I combine the two things. It exhausts every leg muscle I have and makes me feel like jelly but the strength it gives me in the long run is a total high! :)

I would love to try spinning! Never have before :)

I don’t spin on a regular basis-usually when I go home to KY to visit my parents, I’ll get in a session or two with my Mom. I really need to find a place here in Atlanta but since our apartment has a gym (free) I’m probably not going to until we move into a house.

Indoor cycling is great and allows you to really up the tension and push yourself. After riding outdoors, however, I find it so much more exciting to ride outside. But…sometimes the convenience of a class outweighs the preference of the fresh air. Oh well!

I’m kind of jealous that you still have Halloween candy.

I am really liking cycling at the gym. I did take a spin class but only once because the class starts at 5:30 am and I just can’t get there at that time.

Fun fact..Twinkies were named after shoes and started with a banana filling, but during WW2 they didn’t want to run out of bananas so changed it to vanilla..

Cell phone was bought at 14. I am definitely a fan of gym classes vs. studio. I love that if you skip a class you get harassed about where you were..

I started spinning classes five weeks ago. Contrary to what I thought for years, I liked it. Ok, I’m not very good at it. Yet I hope.
