Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas: Post-injury PR.

This is how I feel about the Las Vegas Half:

I had fun.  I felt strong.  I had a post-injury PR.   If you are a new reader, I am coming back from a femoral stress fracture followed by shin splints.  PS I absolutely loved my Chocolate Milk Refuel Gear…..the built in bra of that lulu top was the best ever (I wore a sports bra too)!  I am hooked and it is now in rotation for my outfit of the week. Don’t worry fellow co-workers, I will wear a shirt under it (my Vegas race tech tee), that will be attractive.

Just me and my air guitar playing skills at about 2:45 pm at the starting line, getting pumped to get my run on (and still high off of my sugar binge).

IMG 1023

The gorgeous girls, Pam and Sarah, pre-MARATHON, they started @ 4:00 pm.  Those hats have lights that blink, I was jealous.

IMG 1026

Below picture is pre-half marathon @ 5:24:36 p.m.

IMG 1030

To be honest I went into the half thinking I was just going to enjoy it and take my time, so I ate this as my pre-race meal.

IMG 1001

I have never once claimed to be a smart person.  I have claimed to love chocolate and love running, both of which I indulged in on Sunday, Dec. 3rd= staying true to myself.  We met up with my good friends Rocky and Pam and walked all around the strip looking for a place to eat breakfast @ 10 a.m. on race day.  We finally sat down at noon and I saw chocolate pancakes on the menu.  I thought there would be a few chocoalte chips in the pancakes or something and when they brought out this beauty I nearly had a heart attack.  I went to town on these suckers.  Pancake —-> layer of hershey’s syrup and oreo’s  ——-> repeat = genius.  If you thought I didn’t add syrup to these, you would be wrong.

I really don’t know what I was thinking (or not thinking) eating this before a race.  I guess I was thinking, you only live once.  Don’t worry, I will be working on my pre-race nutrition soon but Vegas was just not the time and place to be eating toast and a banana before I ran.

My legs, cardiovascularness (definitely a word, I promise) felt great and strong during the race.  I felt like in those aspects I could have kept going but (don’t keep reading if you get grossed out by things) the majority of the race I felt those pancakes coming back up and my body yelling at me for choosing such unhealthy food to eat and then asking it to run and run fast.  Lesson learned, I will treat you better body.

Aron, Beth and Sarah with our hard core running faces and Aaron looking at us like we are psycho faces.

IMG 1036

Sarah, Monica, Aron and Page.  Yay forrefuel team You know I chugged my lowfat chocolate milk after that race, quick recovery here I come.

IMG 1037

Okay, so about the race now.

1.  I listened to the same song on repeat  That is ridiculous, I know.  I have a song that has the perfect beat for the cadence I was trying to hit for 7 something minute miles.  I would try to listen to a different song and I would start slowing down and so I kept going back to Base Hunters, All I Ever Wanted song that I sped up via my computer awhile ago for the spin class I taught.  It is my favorite running song and makes me want to cruise.

2.  I ate Chomps througout the race.  I liked them.  They were the blueberry flavor and provided a great boost of energy.

3.  My Garmin will not turn on again after the race (I have had it for four years) and so I do not know my splits. My total time (GARMIN TIME) was 1:36:40 = 7:23 average pace.  I have no idea what my splits were because once again I was really smart and didn’t think to turn on the garmin light while running and it was too dark to see my pace.  I ran this race by feel and by trying to keep up with the people around me.

4.  I absolutely loved the course.  I was worried about the out and back course but it was flat, there were tons of spectators, a million things to distract you and running at night was really really cool.

5.  I wish there were more water/gatorade stations.  I felt like NYCM had one every mile (which I like) and I kept getting really thirsty during this race (probably due to eating 2 lbs of chocolate pre-race).

6.  I ran this race 3 minutes faster than my last 1/2 marathon 5 weeks ago.  I am more excited than ever to continue to train smart, listen to my body (and sports med doctor, he is a smart man) to continue to get back to where I was and set some new REAL PR’s.

Garmin Owners:  What is the life expectancy for Garmins?  I have had mine for four years and I am wondering if it is normal that it won’t turn on even though it has been plugged in for hours…the charging screen won’t even turn on.

Those of you that ran LVRNR…what did you think of the race?  What other races went down this weekend…how did you do?

Have you ever had a scary car/road-trip experience?

Congratulations on a great race! Running at night would be so weird, but it’s Vegas! It looks like you had a wonderful time. I must add this race to my “to-do list” of runs and maybe I’ll have to order those pancakes as my post-run meal. I don’t think I could handle them before. :)

I had the same problem with my Garmin- it wouldn’t even charge. And mine was 4 years old as well. I’ve heard from some runners that they do not like the new Garmin so I went out and bought the Nike GPS watch. I used it for my half marathon yesterday (White Rock Lake- Dallas) and loved it.

Congrats girl, looks like you had such a fun time!! What a great finish time as well, that is awesome!!

Congrats on a great race, girl!
My Garmin died at one point, but I did a reset and that fixed it.
I don’t know which model you have, but for a 205/305 here is a link:

And here it is for the 405.

Sounds like a FUN weekend! Now I want to do that race. I love out and backs. My husband runs a lot faster than I do so I get to see him in an out and back ;) A flat one would be nice for negative splitting too!

Reply

Psssttt *whispers* typo: it was Sunday Dec 4th, not 3rd ;)! Nonetheless those pancakes are literally making me drool and the fact that I am starving is really not helping! Clearly they are the meal of speedy racers ;)! WAY TO GO, J!

Reply

Mine stopped turning on after about 3 months!! But I don’t think that’s normal…

And scary driving experience? I drove with my family from Steamboat to Denver through a blizzard and there were probably more people on the side of the road who’d gotten in accidents than people actually on the road! Well, maybe that’s a bit dramatic….but it was really bad!

Reply

Way to go Janae!!! You did awesome!

My Garmin died like that too, but it worked again after a day. Must have gotten a little attitude;-) I took it off the charger for a day, put it back on and then it worked after that.

So happy you made it back safely…have fun at work, hopefully the post HM runners high will get you through a day of teaching!

CONGRATS ON THE POST-INJURY PR!!!!!!! I honestly believe that post-injury races can sometimes be the best for people, because your body’s well-rested and refreshed and your mind & heart are ready to get back out there. 1:36 is a BAMF time!! And you ran that at night! without having done a ton of speedwork! on chocolate chip pancakes!!!!!!! Ok I have to say, Pancakes for me are a GREAT pre-race fuel, I’ve eaten them for dinner the night before. But not ones loaded with chocolate hahaha….props to your stomach of steel for putting up with that so well!!!

And the Garmin…..hmm. I wouldn’t expect them to last more than 4 years, though I’ve never had one before….I’m getting my first one (a 410) for Christmas this year though (do you think that’s a good model?)!!

And PROPS to Billy for being the best support team/fan/ice cream eater EVER!! you guys make a great team :-D

Congrats on coming back! After all the injuries you’ve gone through, it must be so nice to get back into it! I thought Vegas looked really fun but I’m so scared about night races. I cannot figure out what to eat. Even though those pancakes didn’t sit well, they looked REALLY yummy!

Reply

Have you tried resetting your garmin? Over the weekend mine would not turn on and it had been charging all night, but it came on it two seconds with a full battery when I reset it. Congrats on your PR! :)

Reply

AMAZING! Looks like you had the best time ever!
I bet now that you’re recovered after your fractures and you’ve hit a fantastic PR you can see how it was all worth it to take that time off from running and focus on healing! Such an inspiration!

Reply

I have to say that this race will have to be on my “to do” list.

Reply

Congrats on the PR – I have been enjoying lurking over here and watching your whole trip unfold!

Pancakes look delish.

good luck with the Garmin.

I am SO SO proud!! And so envious of the whole experience. Running at night in LV sounds amazing.

Try this: (From the Garmin site) A. If your device has locked up during use, you can reset your unit by pressing the “Mode”(reset/lap) and “Power” buttons at the same time. In addition, please make sure that the device has the latest software version available. To update the software, please use the following link:
http://www.garmin.com/products/webupdater/

Mine did the same thing this summer and that worked for me. Mine’s only about 2 years old though so not sure if yours is maybe just done? But worth a shot!

Congrats on the race! The whole Vegas weekend sounds amazing and what an awesome way to end it all!

Sadly I have had tons of scary car/road trip things. Including rolling my car when I hit a snow berm driving to school one morning (thats one of the top ones for sure) and more recently, when we broke down in 112 degree weather in the middle of on where Illinois on our way down to NC from alaska. barf. I am road tripped out for a while!

Reply

Ahhhh congrats Janae!! You rock :D. And man those pancakes look delicious…I probably would have eaten them too! I don’t understand people who don’t like chocolate and pancakes together- it’s the ultimate breakfast dream team!

Reply

Loved that green costume. Congratulations on a great race and all the best on future races.

Reply

I’m so happy for you girl! That looks like one of the most fun races ever. I love how supportive your husband is about your running and blogger meeting. It’s so cute!

Reply

Congrats Janae!! I am adding this to my list of races in my future :) You still did such an amazing time especially going into it relaxed and with a belly full of chocolate pancakes :) Maybe the relaxation of it took the pressure off! So many props to Billy… he is so supportive, just the way a guy should be! :)

Reply

holy smokes!! GO you. that is an awesome time! ANd I am sure with different fuel you’ll go even faster!

That is craziness that you drove all night–holy!!

Reply

You rocked it sister! I am the worst at pre-race fueling….I just kinda eat whatever. Those pancakes are serious though!!! Impressive.
I have decided after joining the blog world that my running gear is not nearly fashionable enough…. *must update soon*… you girls looked sooo cute! ;)

Reply

I don’t know about the Garmin. Mine is two years old so I will be curious to see what people say.
I can’t believe you drove back for work. TIRED! I had a horrible roadtrip once. Took almost 20 hours to drive what normally took 11-12. AWFUL.
No races this weekend. I bailed on a 5k cause I wasn’t feeling “fast”.
We ran the Vegas half last year but it was in the morning. I loved it.

CONGRATS on a great race!!! I was totally jealous – all my favorite bloggers were there! There’s no way I could’ve run with those pancakes in my tummy, but you bet I would’ve ordered them, too!

And I am also so glad to hear you made it home safely. I’ve had a few too many scary experiences on the road in bad weather. I try to stay off the road when the weather’s really bad, but sometimes it can’t be avoided. I live in Wisconsin – I can’t just hiberate for a few months (although sometimes I really wish I could escape for a while).

How cool! Congrat girly! Those pancakes look fabfab :)

Reply

Congrats girl on the PR! Are those the Mizuno Wave Rider 15’s? If so how are they, Mizuno was at our race expo on Friday with those for like $80 and I was super tempted to buy them, but have never ran in Mizuno’s before.

PS those pancakes look awesome, I totally want them now! Putting my oatmeal to shame!

Reply

Congrats on the half-marathon!!! I’m so incredibly proud and jealous of you – for the race and the pancakes. I say, indulge whenever you want to as long as it doesn’t make you sick for a run. Perhaps next time the pancakes could be the reward for such an awesome Half-Marathon time!

Reply

Awesome race Janae!!!! Congrats on the PR!

I loved reading about LV from all of my favorite bloggers! Looked like a whirlwind of a weekend.

Reply

Congrats, you did awesome! I want to run this race even more now! One day :) Glad you made it home safe and sound, I have had many scary blizzard car trips so I know what its like.

Reply

Awesome job!!! Sounds like the race and the weekend were super fun!! I loved reading all about it!

I have had my Garmin 201 (relic) since 2006 and no problems here. I just got a new one though because I was ready for a change (and a HR monitor).

Yes! Janae–So happy for you. Gettin’ your groove back is the sweetest! Congrats!!

Reply

Not sure what Garmin you have (had) but there are some good deals on Amazon right now for the 405CX. I just got mine in the mail and am trying it out today! :)

Great work on your post-injury PR! The race looked like such a blast, I am so jealous!

I AM SO SO SO SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!! that is a freaking AWESOME TIME!!! you are amazing! and that picture you posted on twitter for the chocolate milk…um BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
so happy for you girl:)

Reply

I’ve had my Garmin about 4 years, but I only use it for marathons (not for training), so that’s probably not nearly as much as you. I had a problem once where I thought it was totally broken, but it turned out to just be the charger. Have you tried borrowing a friend’s and seeing if that gets yours going? It’s a lot cheaper to replace a charger than a whole Garmin. (Though I think Garmins are pretty cheap these days).

Reply

Nice work! looks like you’re primed to have an impressive 2012.

Try repositioning the garmin on the charger. The watch can get really sensitive and sometimes just playing around with it on the charger will it start charging.

Reply

So glad you made it back safe! It was great to meet you. You are seriously like the sweetest person ever! That PR is ridiculous and the race was amazing, I agree!!! So tell me about this Chocolate Refuel thing…I would like to get involved!!! Those shirts are awesome. Tell Billy we are happy to answer any and all law school questions

Reply

Janae,
First Congrats on a great run! I’m excited to do a “location” run…it’s next on my list! As for the Garmin…I had mine for two years before it died :( It just wouldn’t charge any longer…but Garmin is one of those companies that still stands by its product. I called them and a very nice person walked me through some possible fixes, which unfortuately did not work. So they sent me a new (refurbished) one! I was not expecting that and I think I probably over-thanked the csr. Seeing as yours is 4 years they may not replace but heck its worth a call to them to see what assistance they can provide! Best of luck

Congrats on a pr!!

Reply

You are a beast! I can’t believe you ate that pre-race! Wait, AND PR’d. I love it!!

I live about 1 hour and 45 minutes from my school. One weekend I went home, I had to drive back in a BLIZZARD. Turnpike + 18-Wheelers +Snow coming down in insanely large amounts + Honda Accord = 6 hour drive and a few heart attacks along the way.

Worst. Drive. EVER.

Congrats on the PR! I wouldn’t know what to eat before a race at night, it would be hard to not want to eat normally throughout the day! I would have probably made the same decision!

Reply

Congrats on your race girl!! And thanks for sharing the tip to not eat pancakes covered in boatloads of chocolate syrup before a race, I may be tempted to try that for myself some time;)

As for your garmin, it may not be broken. I had problems his summer with mine and ventured over to the garmin store where they let me know that the watch gets funky sometimes because it needs a software update. Did you try that? If not plug it into your computer and log into your garmin account and you should see a software update option, sorry slips my mind right now as to where that is located. If that doesn’t work, there are a lot of garmin support people on twitter that are alway willing to help. Apparently these things need regular software updates to keep functioning normally, too bad no one told me that when I bought it and when mine started to go crazy I had a panic attack!

Reply

congrats on the PR! I am so happy you are back to training :D YAY!!!!

So do you think your sports med doctor could do online consultations? Ha. I’m so sick of the doctors here, they’re idiots.

A couple of years ago I decided to drive back home from school (80ish miles) on a super snowy day. Here in Missouri they don’t really know how to take care of roads when it snows so they were awful. I was going so incredibly slow, I could barely see other cars, I couldn’t see any of the lines on the road… it was a little terrifying. I also almost ended up in the ditch my senior year of high school. I always had to leave track practice early to get to work, and I thought I had to work this one day so I was headed to work and decided to take a road I don’t normally take… bad idea. It had been raining so there was gravel along the road, and this is a super curvy road and I was going too fast into a big curve. My car did a 180 across the road and crashed sideways into a traffic pole. So I called work and told them that I’d be a little late… and they told me I was called off that day… and then 2 of my managers and 1 or 2 people from work just happened to drive by and see me on the side of the road. I found out a year or two later that my boss also drove by (but didn’t stop… jerk. And I mean that semi-sarcastically, semi-seriously).

And great job yesterday! Reading this post made my legs itch with a desire to run pain-free.

Reply

Congrats on such an amazing race! I give myself full credit for sending so many positive vibes and prayers haha.

Uhm i love your friends outfit in the first picture. Its adorable.

Car road trips?? uhm we just got back from going up north for a wedding and it was horrible! We hit a blizzard. In pitch black. Couldnt see the road or your hand in front of your face it was so bad. What was supposed to be a 4 hour drive took us almost 8. Scary!

Reply

mine lasted 2 years. blargh. I just got the nike version. I am liking it so far.

Awesome job Janae!!! sounds like you’re recovering well! and that’s AWESOME Billy is so supportive of your passion for blogging & racing :)

Great race time! Congrats on the PR!

I loved this race and would so do it again. It was a ton of fun! It was so great to meet you this weekend. You’re just as genuine and awesome in person as you are appear on your blog!

Reply

Hey, way to go w/your race!

Glad you made it home all right… now how are you managing staying awake at work? :)

One of the scary drives I’ll remember was in 2001… we were driving home from visiting my family for Thanksgiving, and drove home in a snowstorm with my 3 & 4 year olds & a new baby. Parley’s was so bad… we could hardly see the road. Terrible. Horrible. I do all I can not to drive in snow on long trips anymore.

Reply

Congratulations on the PR! and a well run race. You are fast.

Living in New England I have had my share of snowy rides, when you had to get somewhere, no fun. Slow and steady is the way to go.

Reply

Awesome job on your race and PR! That’s so great!!

The garmin customer service is pretty great. You could probably call them to troubleshoot.

Reply

Nice job!!!! I’m scared about your drive back though—that area of roads can be brutal. Glad you are safe and sound (and probably exhausted!)

Reply

awesome race! i have no idea how those pancakes didnt come back up at mile 2–they look delicious for AFTR the race

if our garmin is on the fritz hold down the power and mode buttons for a few seconds for a hard reset. mine wasnt working a few weeks ago and I called customer support and thats how they had me fix it

i ran my first marathon yesterday–3:32:35!!!!!!

we used to drive to Colorado every spring break and one time the snow was so bad we had a time off the side of the mountain and had to use our friends car to pull us from falling over the mountain

I just had to jump in here to tell you CONGRATS on a great FIRST marathon time! I have no idea how that compares to all your other race times or anything, but wow, that’s a great time for a first marathon!

Reply

Girl, awesome job!! If you do Vegas again, I have got to come out that way and run with you. I’m glad to see you made it back safely.

Reply

Wow – congrats on a great race! Your recovery gives me so much hope – I am two runs into my femoral stress fracture recovery plan, and it’s nerve wracking! :)

Reply

I can’t speak to how long Garmins last since I have only had mine for 2 weeks but I feel so bad for you that it won’t turn on! I think I would cry if that happened to mine. As for races, I totally did a 5K in 4 inches of snow and dressed up in Holiday gear to run it too! It was a lot of fun and I got to meet a lot of people from the community who enjoy running too. As for winter storms, last winter we were driving back from Moab Utah and got caught in a snow storm coming over the pass in CO. Cars all around us were sliding and hitting other cars! Glad you guys made it safely home!

Reply

I’ve had my garmin 2 years and i’ve recently had some weird issues with it. I do know that if you use garmin connect, they had a new software update (which was a gigantic pain in my side this weekend). I doubt that has anything to do w/ why your screen won’t turn on. Maybe you need a new USB cable? … I’d call garmin.

Are we going to hear more about your car in the ditch? What kind of storm were you driving through? That is really scary! Glad you guys are okay! Congrats on your great race! (i was stalking, i mean following you, on the rnr website and i was cheering you on from the comfort of my bed. ha )

Reply

Yay! congrats on a great race. I was thinking about you this weekend and wishing I could have been a part of Las Vegas. Sounds like a blast – glad to see you had a great time and got a post-injury PR!

Reply

Congrats on ur post injury pr that is soo awesome!! Your whole weekend sounds amazing minus the whole snow storm ditch scenario!

Reply

Have you tried doing a hard reset on the Garmin (google it). This happened to mine when it was about a year old, I was distraught, but a hard reset WORKED, and it’s been fine ever since (it’s been well over a year since I had to do that).

Good luck!

Reply

You’re adorable!

Congrats on a great race and PR’ing [if that is even gramatically correct, ha]! I loveee your lululemon clothes- I’m asking for some for Christmas, hope Santa [my momma and my Dear] realized how nice I’ve been this year, haha :P

P.S. A heart monitor watch is on my Christmas list this year too but I can’t make up my mind of which one I want… Polar? Garmin? Timex?

Reply

I want those pancakes right now!!! Congrats on an amazing race, girl!! I knew you would rock it!

Reply

Awesome race! I know what you mean about almost losing what you ate pre-run. I’m using my long runs now to play around with what my body likes to eat pre-run, and right now it’s oatmeal 2 hours before the race. I might just stick with that!

I did a “5K” at Trolley square/Liberty Park, but it was only 2.56 miles, so I got a rocking new PR haha, except not really.

I don;’t know about lives of garmins, but my friend (who is also a Utahn) said she thought she saw one at Costco recently. I don’t know if it’s the one you’re looking for, but it might be worth looking into if yours is dead.

Reply

Way to go! Love the pictures and those pancakes look to die for. Yum!

Reply

YAY!! Congrats girl! I’m glad all of that training and resting (or eating ice cream.. whatever :) has been paying off!

Reply

In case someone hasn’t already told you – you just need to reset your garmin and it should work again. There are two buttins you have to hold down for 20 seconds or something, I can’t remember what they were off the top of my head but look in the manual. It should perk right back up.

Congrats on your new post injury PR! It is probably really exciting to see your mojo start to come back!

Reply

There is a way to reboot the garmin. Google it. I had it happen a year back. Push the mode button and power button at same time. I’m getting ready to list my old garmin 305 on eBay. Love the new 610!!! Yeah for your post injury pr. Looks like you had a great time. Hopefully you didn’t make too many mistakes teaching today. :).

I am so jealous that you ate that awesome mess o’ cakes and didn’t need to join me at Denny’s at Mile 8 :P

Way to run it, girl! You totally kicked it… and shoot, you were in VEGAS… chocolate pancakes as a pre-race meal sounds right on the money!

I had a near-death experience once with my Garmin. It was traumatizing! I hope yours heals! Lol.

And I love those late night drives with my husband when we are sugar hyper!! So fun.

Congratulations!!! Nice PR!

I just bought a new Garmin (the 610 – I LOVE it) but had some weird battery issues. I e-mailed the Garmin customer service peeps and they were super helpful. Sent links for a software update and instructions on how to do a reset and now it’s awesome.

I’d try emailing them – they’ll get back to you within 24 hrs and tell you what you can do.

Pancakes looks yum-tastic, but I can’t imagine eating them before running that long. Glad you….kept everything down. :-)

Congrats on beating your last time!

i think its hard to fuel for those late races. i either eat to much or too little, but you look happy. Depsite the Garmin. I usually have to reset mine to make it work.

That happened w/my Garmin 405. I emailed Garmin and Jake got back to me and told me to clean both sides of the connection w/rubbing alcohol. (I used witch hazel.) Worked like a charm! I had to clean the connecting prongs AND the metal connectors on the watch.

Reply

Wow!!! You are a rock star! That time is amazing :)

Sunday was the CIM (ever thought of running it??), and I didn’t run in it, but we had a friend who did, so we went to cheer him on! He did AMAZING, with a time of 3:26! It was such great energy being there, cheering on all the awesome runners! Definitely making it an annual thing, as long as we live in Sac!

Congrats on the PR! Bummer about the Garmin!
I ran the Fiesta Bowl Half Marathon in Scottsdale, AZ yesterday and got a PR as well. 1:59:36. Not a speed demon like you, but I’m proud of my all-out effort!

Reply

Billy IS the best. I totally know how you feel! I came home yesterday and tried to express to Jonathan how much appreciated that he “wasted” (not exactly wasted, cause he had fun…I think) his weekend to go to Sacramento, wake up at 5:30 a.m., then drive in a car all over the city to pull over and cheer/take pictures for a weird sport that he only understands for about 3-miles worth. HOW do we repay them?

You do a really good air guitar pose. No, like a REALLY good pose. Ever thought about becoming a real Rock N’ Roller, instead of a runner who runs Rock N’ Roll half marathons?

I’m sure other commenters will tell you how to “power start” your Garmin, or google how to. This has happened to me, and to almost all of us. It will start again though!

Finally, and of course, GREAT to see you chipping away at your times now that you are recovered from that injury! Axe 3 minutes away per race, and you will be beating your old self in NO time.

Reply

YOU ARE SUCH A ROCK STAR. is anything you do not awesome?

p.s. way to go, garmin. it was smart to stop working BEFORE christmas. ;)

Reply

Damn girl! You ROCKED IT!!!

So fun meeting you :)

Congrats on such a great race! I love the picture of you and your air guitar : ) Looks like you had so much fun!

Glad ya’ll made it home safely! My hubby and I had to drive home in tropical storm rain and wind early this year. It was raining so hard that therewas so much flooding, at one point every street we turned on was flooded and we had to keep turing around. It made for a long drive home, but I was just happy we made it safely.

SO WIERD!!! That happened to my Garmin YESTERDAY too!! I called Garmin this morning and they are sending me a new one! (once I ship the old one back!) I have had mine for 3+ years too. Good luck! And congrats!

Reply

My Garmin did the same thing, I cleaned the little metal things on the back of the watch with a damp cloth and also the prongs on the charger and then it started working again. Apparently they get a little dirty after sweating on them for hours :)
Congrats on your PR!

Reply

Congrats on your PR!!!! Looks like those pancakes weren’t too bad afterall :D I’ve only had my Garmin for a little while, so I can’t help! You did awesome though, you’re my running herooo

Reply

Sounds like an awesome race. & you DEFINITELY have to enjoy Vegas while you are there, so I would be right with you- enjoying a great meal before the race…even if it killed me. Those pancakes sound SO good!!
Hope you had a wonderful time..and hopefully today isn’t too terrible!

Reply

Ahhh, I feel relieved knowing you’re back. However, I don’t like the sound of the ditch incident.!?!? I trust that Billy kept calm and rose to the occasion. :) You on the other hand should know better than to eat those chocolate chip pancakes pre race. :) Really though, good job and have a fabulous Monday.

BTW, check out today’s Motivate Me Monday runner…she’s super inspiring, love her story. She was at the race last night…her first come back distance race.

Girl, you run fast!!

Exact same thing happened to my Garmin (205 – the old huge square blue one). I plugged it into the wall to charge after a run; after I unplugged it, it would not turn on. Nothing. Replugged it in, nothing.

Mine was 2 years old when it died. But not sure when it was actually manufactured.

I think if you got 4 years out of your Garmin, that’s pretty good. I feel like 2-3 is probably more accurate.

Congrats on your speedy legs!

Reply

Congrats on running a great race, Janae! Love that Billy was there to support you through it. Makes me so happy. :)

Reply

CONGRATULATIONS on an awesome race, Janae! So pumped for you!

Also pumped that you and Billy have decided to move to NYC! You did confirm that, right? RIGHT?!

I hope you had an easy trip, I adored meeting you and I hope to see you two crazy kids again very soon. Congratulations again! So great!

Reply

We totally confirmed it!! See you SOON and we can run in Central Park together daily!

Reply

Congrats!!! The pancakes look so good, I want them NOW! I totally would’ve eaten them too :) Way to go, girl, you rocked it!

Hi Janae…I love your blog! I’m a new runner/jogger and I consider reading your blog part of my training…you really do inspire me, so THANK YOU!!!!!…I’m aiming to complete my first half marathon next May…the longest distance I’ve done so far is 8km….I’m 38 and over the last 12 months have turned my life around, lost 15kg, found God, and discovered the joyful pain of running…what you’re doing with YOUR life is making a BIG impact on MY life!!! Thanks again and congratulations on your time for the half marathon…Natalie (in Australia)

Reply

NATALIE!! Thank you so much for commenting. I am SO so excited for you! You are incredible!! Please email me if you get a chance cause I want to hear all about your training!

Your blog and SR are in my morning rotation when I eat my cereal. Honestly your pics on each other’s website is kind of eerie, especially the pic of Billy and Marlie – like when sitcom characters cross over into each others shows.

Anyway, love the blog, congratulations! :)

Reply

BAHAHA That is hilarious…..I know, isn’t that funny to see him on there:) Thanks for your sweet comment and I hope you have an amazing day!

Reply

You too!! :)

Love the race pics! Congrats on a shiny new PR!

I’ve had my Garmin for about 3 years, and have misplaced my charger (boo) but when I have it charged up it usually works just fine. I’m off to the sporting goods store this afternoon to see if I can buy a charger separately without having to buy a brand new watch.

Anyways great job! Looking fwd to seeing what’s next for you!

Reply

First of all, holy freakin moly. I want those pancakes. And try charging your garmin!! I mean you probably already tried that but still, andddd one time I was on a nighttime road trip and we had our rooftop carrier fall off (scariest thing ever) and THEN there was a car swerving everywhere going like 20 mph on the highway (issues) and then there was one driving against traffic on the highway. It was a strange night.

Reply

Wow, congrats to you on such a great run!!
I loved reading your posts this weekend, it looked like you had soo much fun. That’s so fun that you bloggers can meet up like that. Come to Canada for a visit! What an awesome hubby you have. What did Billy think of the wknd and all the crazy bloggers?! :)

Reply

Wow, I can’t believe you ate those pancakes before you ran! You have a stomach of steel!! ;)

Congrats on an awesome race!!

Reply

Congrats!

Reply

SO impressed by you all the time! It looks like your weekend was seriously a blast. So fun to see all you bloggers together, and pictures of you all popping up on each other’s blogs.

What will be your next race? I’m considering doing the St George 1/2 on Jan. 21st to give me something soon. Have you heard anything about this race?

Reply

I seriously love the crazy blinky hats. I want one.

My Garmin has been giving me some troubles lately (battery issues too). I’ve done some research and I’d suggest you first try to use a little rubbing alcohol on the charging transfer points to clean them off [maybe you got some sweaty body lotion on it and they can’t transfer power?] If you still can’t get it turned back on, call Garmin customer support. It may just need to have the battery replaced.

And congrats on the fantastic time and glad you got home safely!

Nice meeting you this weekend (HRM, BF) we had lots of fun at Eye Candy dancing our hearts away!! Nice run, you did GREAT!! I had a great time and loved the course/nightrun. I train at night so I was right and home. I PR’d and ended my 1st year of running on a very happy note!! :)

Reply

Yes so so fun!!! Congrats you are amazing! Email me more details about it! That is so cool you train at night…..perfect!

Reply

WOW, what a time! Congrats!

You are so funny, I can’t believe you could still run after eating those monster pancakes! I did the Freedom Run 10K in July and I ate way too much “crap food” the night before and it was the most awful run of my life….I can’t imagine eating those 5 hours before a half marathon!

Good job on the post injury PR! That is awesome! I think my husband needs to do that half next year, he loves running at night! And I must say, the night run during Ragnar are my favorite. There is just something cool about running in the dark.

I did a short run today (3 miles) but it was FREEZING and I kept thinking of the Jillian Michaels quote you put on here the other day and it totally got me through the run. So thank you for sharing :).

Reply

p.s. Has Billy heard back about where you will be going to Law School?

Reply

Great race- congrats!! Glad you made it home safely- scary! A couple of years ago we got caught it a blizzard heading to Oregon at Christmastime. It was one of the scariest experiences of my life.

Reply

THAT is an awesome time! You’re on fire!

It was great meeting you and Billy, Skinny Runner, and all the other bloggers. And ice cream followed by Chipotle… what a winning combo!

I’m not a Garmin owner, but after talking Billy’s ear off (sorry Billy!) about his 610, I’ve decided to finally click the Checkout button for the Garmin 610 that’s been sitting in my Amazon.com basket.

I finished two minutes slower than my Long Beach 1/2 PR time (in Oct), but I was very pleased with my run and surprised after all the dessert I consumed after every meal …breakfast is followed by dessert, right?

I have never run a race with this many runners (33,123 half marathoners… wow) – a bit crowded but the sights of the Vegas Strip and running by a few Elvis impersonators made for a great time.

I’m glad you and Billy made it back home safe – we just got back today. I have a Brianhead, Utah driving mishap story that also ended up in a ditch, but during whiteout snow conditions… long story though – or I tell it too long hahaa.

Hope your 305 gets up and running again!

Oh, and yes, I would’ve done the same with the chocolate pancakes. C’mon, there’s CHOCOLATE in there!! Awesome!

Reply

Yayyy, awesome job with the race! And fueled by chocolate and pancakes no less. I am starting a cookies only running club but mayyybe I can allow pancakes too.

Reply

this race seemed like so much fun!! and congrats on the post-injury PR!! I never doubted your crazy speed lady! your pre-race pancakes look AWESOMEEEEEEE by the way! If I wasn’t already in the middle of eating dinner, I think I’d be out hunting down pancakes right now!

Let me sing you a little song, “You are aaaaaaamazing…la la la…ammmmmazing… de do do de…CONGRATS!”

Ok, that sounded better in my head. But I’m SO SO glad that I finally got to meet you in person and that you ran such an awesome race. LMK if you can seriously make it to NorCal for the party – we’d love to have you here!

running at night is soooo fun- for some reason you also feel faster! great job girl!!! yeah for PR!!

You did SO GREAT and it was so fun getting to see you after and rehash the race. I loved it, I thought it was soooo much fun :)

Love the hardcore runner face pic because obviously I don’t know how to do that ;)

Can you move to Nor-Cal now please?

Reply

Congratulations! I would love to run this half someday. It sounds like tons of fun. Good luck at your next race!

Reply

Congrats again on your post-injury PR… you are so fast!!! Glad you had fun in Vegas but sad we didn’t get to meet :(

Reply

Great recap. Breakfast (and food) can always be tricky, especially with a night race. Way to make the best of it and congrats on the PR. Looks like you all avoided some of the “challenges” others faced. Way to smash it!

Reply

I haven’t read the other comments, but the SAME thing happened to my Garmin and I did some research online because it wouldn’t charge or anything. Just dead, no display. 0% charge. The thing I found online said to wait a few days. Then try to charge it again. I thought that was total b.s. but I tried it and it actually worked.

Reply

Great job!! I am so sorry I missed meeting up with you, we made the mistake of attempting to find the EXPO around noon and by the time we actually found it, (for some reason no one could explain how to get there) and got our packet and goodies it was well after 3 and then it took another hour to figure out how to get back out of there. Craziness!!

Reply

Um you are AMAZING (i’m talking about the chocolate pancakes here not the actual race… just kidding. i’m talking about both.) Now please move to SF already! I want in on this blogging/running/dance party fun!

Reply

Great race Janae! I’m amazed that you could eat those (yummy looking) pancakes and then run so fast! Glad you made it home safely.

Reply

Great finish time! I’m curious to know about the Garmin troubles. I hope mine lasts longer than 4 years. I mean, it’s a serious investment.

Reply

Way to go on post injury PR!!
I didn’t get my PR, had a few bad experiences with the crowding. Too much weaving and wasting engergy. But still liked running the strip at night.

Reply

I’m not at the 4 yr mark with my Garmin yet. I have the 405 which I received in May ’09 and it’s still going strong (knock on wood).

Scary car/road trip experiences…there are at 3 that come to mind on 3 different trips to Vermont. It’s really awesome driving through the Green Mountains in the middle of a blizzard (did that twice). Then I think it was 9 years ago that we were leaving VT after skiing and, while it wasn’t snowing, hubs slowed down as we approached a curve and hit some black ice – the car spun around ended in a snowy ditch. Luckily not a deep ditch. We were in a spot where there was no cell service. awesome. Luckily a kind pick up truck driver driving by stopped and pulled us out.

Same issues with my Garmin Forerunner 210 after only 5 months. Reset resolved, but it is still seems flaky.
