Garmin Splits and Headphones.

By Friday afternoon, my brain is absolutely shot.  I can barely see straight after a week of teaching teenagers (and almost dying a few times during our drivers ed adventures), working out, not making dinner for Billy and not practicing any hygiene.

So, this post is especially random.

1.  I guess I did take another picture at the LV 1/2 marathon: a self-portrait of course. This way I can look back ten years from now and wonder why I am so happy at the starting line when I am about to feel a lot of pain for a few hours.

I wore my headphones during the ROCK and ROLL race….hmmm, isn’t that a race with music at every mile or something like that?  I don’t remember hearing one band.  It was one of those races that I just needed to zone out and let my music push me along.

2.  I finally got my garmin working again and was able to download my splits from Sunday.  My goal was to not let the first mile be my fastest.  Mission accomplished.  It was fun to look at the splits because I couldn’t see my garmin the entire race (I forgot about that little thing known as the light button) and had no idea what pace I was running.  I didn’t exactly stick to negative splits though.

3.  The most amazing Natalie from New Zealand sent me some amazing treats that I cannot get enough of….especially those marshmallow cookies.  America, we need to get on the marshmallow cookie train.

And I also got some delicious treats from Christina, Canadian candy.  That Caramilk bar is long gone.  Sorry, Billy.

Why does candy from everywhere else taste so much better?

4.  The amazing Courtney is hosting a Virtual 5K for a little boy that needs help!!

Hope that you have the best weekend ever, you get in some great workouts, eat some chocolate and watch Elf at least once.

What percentage of the time do you wear headphones while running?

-88%

Do you like to analyze and look at your garmin stats for hours?  Please someone come forward and say yes, otherwise I am going to feel really lame.

What are your Friday night plans?  I need some fun ideas of what to do.

I have to admit that I’ve never looked at my garmin stats on the computer like that (i got it last Christmas). Is it just using the software that comes with it? I’ll have to play with it! I listen to music or watch TV/movies 99% of the time when I run, so I’m pretty much always wearing headphones. I’m hoping for a dinner and a movie type of date night…hope you have a great Friday night!

Reply

You totally should….it is so fun to download the info and compare your times etc. You need to hook it up. Hope you had a great date night!

Oh yes. You have to check it out, girl. It’s super motivational!!! It’s just all through Garmin online.. at least the green one I have lol.

Get your booty to World Market – they have that kind of candy there :)

I almost never wear headphones while running. I know. I’m boring. And yes, I analyze my Garmin Stats. I especially love the ‘of all time’ button, where it shows you your overall EVERYTHING for EVERY RUN EVER, of ALL TIME. So neat.

I have to attend a work function tonight. Should be quick and painless.

I wear my headphones like 99% of the time. Maybe 100%! I think I would die without my Garmin. I look at my stats afterwards too, even from runs a long time ago.

Reply

Run in my headphones 100% of the time. I just can’t run without music, unless I’m racing with a friend. But thats not often! Friday night plans include, eating: what? not sure yet & sleeping! Its happening over here in Savannah!

Girls night tonight! Instead of Christmas presents this year, my two closest friends and I decided to go down to Denver, do dinner, drinks, and dancing! I’m excited cause I get to dress up and even wear heels— a RARE event! Have a good weekend!

I can count on one hand how many times a year that I run with my ipod. I’m just not a fan of being plugged in. I do a lot of trail running so I’d rather take in the surroundings. :)

Friday night plans will include Candy Cane Lane Tea and a movie.

Looking forward to tomorrow…I’m going to my daughter’s house to bake Christmas cookies with her and her girlfriends! She just got married in April so this his her first year hosting<3 Mmmmm…..Coooookies!!

I spend HOURS looking over my garmin stats and race results etc. It’s ridiculous. I spend forever looking at my stats from just a regular training run. I may be slightly obsessed with my garmin.

Candy from other places totally tastes so much better. For as much candy as we eat in the US we really suck at it!

Not much going on here in Nashville. It’s so cold right now ( prob not as cold as where you are ) but I am from Florida and I’m not used to black ice and waking up to 26 degrees! I’m Cozying up by a fire with a good movie, ELF!!! :) just me my boyfriend and our dog.

STAY WARM!!! I hope you enjoyed watching elf and you had a great time cuddling….plus you should be drinking lots of hot chocolate. That is what helps me survive the cold weather!

Reply

I would say 5% of the time…or less! I hate listening to music when I run. I know, I know…I’m a weirdo. :)

Reply

That is not weird…that is AWESOME!

I love looking at my garmin stats online after I upload it. I spend a little too much time staring at the speeds and elevation and map. Then I take my laptop to wherever my BF is in the house and show him and I look it all over again. lol

Yummy candy! I love foreign candy, it is all so much better than ours, especially Aero Bars! I wear headphones about 95% of the time, I know that I should learn to enjoy running without them, since I am sure there will be a race where I can’t wear them, but I haven’t even tried. I never analyze my runs, I don’t hit the laps either though, I may need to figure that out…

I don’t think my Garmin does those summaries. I have the cheapest one. idk… I am a big fan of Daily Mile and like to look at how much speed I have picked up the past few months. Tonight- relax and probably watch the Muppets Christmas with the kiddos. I baked for 4 hours today, I deserve a break.

Ha ha ha, yeah I look at my garmin forever when I get back…but it’s even sadder for me because the farthest I usually go is six miles. LOL. Love my new shoes btw, couldn’t help myself and opened them today. My Friday night plans are pretty lame this week, my 9 yr. old is in The Christmas Carol play out in Mesa so I’m taxi driver tonight. At least I went out with adults last night for Big Papa’s bday. Tomorrow is the boys piano recital so that blows…but hopefully we’ll get a hot date in after that! Have a fab weekend and enjoy Elf.

I always wear headphones unless I’m running with someone, and that candy looks so cool!!!!

Reply

That candy looks incredible! I really need to eat dinner so I can have dessert.

I haven’t been wearing headphones to run lately because it’s so cold that when I’m not running with someone, I’m on the treadmill. During the warmer months, though, I always wear them when I’m running outside.

I don’t like American candy, there’s much more wax and other NOT chocolate ingredients in it. I am willing to special order candy and pay too much money to really get my kicks out of it. One day I’ll move to England where they have great candy.

I love tracking my running on the computer! I use a Nike chip so it shows you going up hills and down. One time I fell 3 x in one run and it legit showed me plummet and my pace hit 0 it was an America’s Funniest Home Video material.

Wow lots of loot..how many blogger packages do you get a week?! Soo many candy bars and marshmallows you could start your own Smores factory with different flavored bars..

Tonight I went to a holiday event with family. Then home for Project Accessory and take-out: veggie burgers from Unos and Frosty’s from Wendys. Yahoo.

Happy Friday! I am making tons of gingerbread cookies tonight :)

The only time I ever wear headphones is if I’m on the elliptical, or exercise bike. Headphones irritate me. I wish I could get into them, but they always bounce out of my ears. Elf is my FAVORITE Christmas movie!

Reply

I love your self portrait. Pretty pretty pretty!

and I don’t own a garmin, I don’t even have a running device. I map my runs, and click “start” on my stop watch and click “end” at the end.

I really need one though and if I DID have one, I’m sure I’d be like you.

PS: I am doing a race /w hills in it AND it’s a 10k (I’ve never race further than 5) and I want to be super fast! – any training plans you could throw at me in your spare time….not that you have it :P but I’d appreciate it. my goal is under 1hr finish – stretch goal sub 50!

I forgot my ipod/headphones in my hotel room so I had no music for Vegas :( there wasn’t very many bands and even at that you only hear them for a few seconds. I use my music to help me zone out and push myself.
I probably wear my headphones about 90% of the time.

My Friday night plans are to put my fuzzy warm pj’s on and finish reading the 3rd book in the Hunger Games series :)

Reply

50% with headphones.

Friday night: Hubby and I made grilled cheese and vegetable soup, purchased our parents Christmas gifts on line, and now just watching midless tv…..I think there might be a cereal suicide in my future.

Happy weekend. Do you break your running fast tomorrow?

I am definitely addicted to my Garmin. I try to tape it or not look at it at times but then I study the heck out of it later. Dang your splits are nearly IDENTICAL to my sisters through about 8 miles (I study hers too-ha ha). You were probably running right next to her. She was blonde, black shorts, tall. I’m sure you noticed her among the 44,000:) Great job on the race girl!!!! Caramilk bars are the death of me, along with Wonderbars, Aero bars, Crunchy bars, and ALL other forms of Canadian chocolate. Good thing I moved to America……

Let me know if you ever want a stash of Australian candy/snacks! I LOVE putting together little packages of delicious goodies for people! :)

Reply

You know I will. I hope you were serious about that because I will have to take you up on that offer:) Have a great weekend Lizzi!

Reply

you better believe i am serious homegirl :)

I actually don’t run with headphones and I don’t have a Garmin. Weird, I know!

Reply

I love analyzing my garmin splits. You are not lame. You are awesome!

Candy from elsewhere DOES taste better. Last week I ate a chocolate bar I had brought back from Iceland. Yum.

Dude, I bet teaching Driver’s Ed is dangerous. I definitely gave my driver’s ed teacher a few heart attacks!! Do you have your kids drive you to sandwich/donut/food places? My lessons were always first period at like 7:30am and my teacher would make me drive to Wawa so he could get coffee and a muffin…one time, when I didn’t run any stoplights, he bought me a muffin too! lol.

Anyway. if I had a garmin I would TOTALLY analyze my splits obsessively. I also love how your fastest mile was right in the middle of the race on semi-tired legs – WIN!

I love marshmallow cookies too! We do have them here in America, I’ve gotten them a lot. They’re called Mallomars or Pinwheels…so good!

Reply

Um, Noelle…you just saved my life. Thanks for letting me know that we have them here too, I must get them!

Reply

I actually only wear headphones about 10% of the time now. I used to all the time, but I’ve gotten out of the habit now. Mostly because I run with a jogging stroller, or running buddies a lot. My Friday night consisted of watching Home Alone with my little boy, and now reading blogs. Pretty exciting.

Reply

Awesome splits! I run with headphone 98% of the time…the other 2% is when my iPod dies or I forget to charge it! My Friday night plans involved drinks for a friend’s birthday. however the reality included: sick in bed watching Modern Family reruns and eating a Choc chip cookie the size of my face!

Reply

I love your smiley enthusiastic running photos! You remind me that running is a gift and a joy and I should just get my bum out there. ps: I need to see Elf, as in I never have. UnAmerican… I know.

Reply

WHAT!!! Falon, I am sending you a copy asap. You must watch it. Thanks for your sweet comment and enjoy your running!

ELF IS MY FAVORITE XMAS MOVIE AND THE SANTA CLAUS! or even just an all time favorite :)

Reply

If I am on the roads I wear headphones about 80% of the time. Trail running no headphones. Sadly my garmin died so no data to stew over, oh that and I haven’t been running much….changing that next week. Friday night plans play with baby then work around the house, jealous?

Reply

I vote for Collisions Chocolate Chippies to be used at aid stations along major races. I’m just sayin’…

I’m a 95 percent-er when it comes to music and running – I don’t think I even hear the music any more – it’s more of a tempo thing, you know?

I may actually be worse; during dinner I’ll sit in front of the laptop looking at my uploaded run stats on the Nike+ site for about… oh… I don’t know… couple hours?? I need an intervention.

I have Elf on DVD… doesn’t everyone?!?!

Reply

haha…totally guilty of spending WAY too much time reading and rereading my splits! it’s like i’ll somehow magically glean even more from the run if i stare at it. :P

i’m sorry, but my friday is prolly even more boring than yours…at least u’ve got all that yummy candy!! :)

I wear my headphones 98% of the time listening t music, audiobooks or watching TV! I am getting a Garmin for Christmas and you better believe I will spend hours staring at the stats! My friends and I had an Elf night last night. We wore Christmas pj’s and I made spaghetti pie, Buddy the Elf style! http://pic.twitter.com/kCDfLQZ

We put maple syrup, chocolate, coconut and sprinkles on it! We ate it while we watched the movie for the billionth time! The pie was surprisingly good! Here’s the recipe in case you are interested.

I feel like it was a night you would have enjoyed LOL! Now I am off to run 6 miles!

Reply

I have really gotten away from wearing headphones, mostly because my ipod is so old that it only has a few more good long runs in it, lol. I listen to music for runs of 13 miles or longer. I feel like that kind of “saves” the music so it’s fresh on race day and I get a real boost from it. Does that make sense?

Haha I’m from New Zealand, it’s so weird to see NZ lollies on an American blog, mellowpuffs sure are amazing though, they make them in minis and different flavours too… good enough reason to come over for a visit? I’ve seen some other NZ’ers commenting on your blog, you should do a race-holiday and have a meet up here! I love reading your posts, I am a terribly slow runner and have never done a race but sometimes after reading these posts I think I could, haha one day for sure. Cheers for both the entertaining tales and the motivation! Josie (from NZ, in case that wasn’t clear lol)

Hey Josie,

You might have seen some of my comments on here :) I am the one who sent over all these lovely NZ lollies and cookies for Jane. Yummy! If you ever need a running buddy, let me know.

Wow, you are so fast, I need to work hard to get my pace anywhere closer to yours :) Keep it up! (And of course, carb loading is necessary all the time.)
