Pacing for Racing and Things that Make me Incredibly Happy.

Before I get into racing strategies (and try to convince you that I am really smart), I wanted to share a few pins from Pinterest that I have put on my “Things That Make Me Incredibly Happy” pinboard.

I cross that line daily…..thanks a lot, selff tanner.

This makes me happy because my sis actually really hates of opening those packages….she leaves the room if someone else is opening one…..I might be in trouble for sharing this with you all but I feel like we are all family so she can’t be too mad:)

—————————————————————————-

We are currently 4 days away from RNR Las Vegas and you know that I am getting pumped.  Here’s the thing…..of course I have a time goal that I want to reach but it is kind of scaring me.  This whole running for fun thing is kind of making me crazy and I want to have a goal that I push myself so hard to reach that I feel like puking at the end of the race.  On the other hand, I have to be smart blah blah blah and not re-injure myself because my brain is crazy and wants to go faster than my legs can handle right now.  Plus, I have to come to terms with the fact that I am no where near in the physical condition I was in previous years.  I will get there, it just takes some time and some sweat.

Here is the course map for you just in case you wanted to picture where I will be on Sunday and cheer me on from your head.  If you eat swedish fish while cheering for me in your head, it will make me go faster and smile bigger.

Screen Shot 2011 11 29 at 11 09 10 AM

What I can do fantastically on Sunday is pace correctly and run a smart race.

From my running bible (The Runner’s Body):

“Your pacing strategy is nothing more than the way you attempt to distribute your energy reserves over the course of a race.  There is not a runner alive who has not made the error of going out too hard, only to pay back doubly in the second half of the race.  And we have all run conservatively, often reaping the benefits of our restraint later in the race, when we glide past tired runners who seem to have reached their physiological limits.  Most runners speed up in the final stretch of most races, even though lactate levels are at their highest then.”

How do I plan (key word…it all depends on how many Serendipity frozen hot chocolates I drink before the race) to distribute my energy reserves over LV RNR half-marathon……

Start fast, run fast in the middle, and then finish very fast;)

Okay, really I do want to push myself and see where I am in terms of speed but my number one goal (just like with NYCM) is to have negative splits and enjoy the experience.  My first mile BETTER NOT BE MY FASTEST….or else you are in big trouble Janae.

—————————————————————–

What race did you do your WORST pacing?  What race did you do your BEST pacing?  What are some of your future pacing goals?

-I was looking over my garmin stats from the 2010 UV marathon last year….mile 1: 5:55…… Mile 25:  8:20…..oops.

What is something that is making you Incredibly Happy today?

-Besides funny things I find on Pinterest…….my seat warmer in my car…….how can you not be happy with toasty buns?

What do you think about out and back courses?  Love ’em, hate ’em?

-To be honest, point to point races are my favorite but I am sure there will be plenty of things to look out on the Vegas course that I won’t get bored on an out and back course.

Are you having any treats today?

-Yep, I have some Swedish Fish in my back pack waiting to be opened and eaten!

Hooray for your race on Sunday! You are going to be amazing!!!

To be honest, I’m not the biggest swedish fish fan..BUT I will be eating a giant cup of froyo in your honor to cheer you on! :)

Reply

Anna, I will forgive you about the Swedish Fish comment as long as you send me any that you receive:) Thanks for the froyo eating and thanks for your comment!

My very first half marathon was a nightmare. I had no idea what I was doing, no idea about pacing, no idea about anything! I think I got slower each mile until I just walked the rest lol. Bright side is that there was nowhere to go other than up after that! :)

Something making me happy today? TODAY IS MY LAST DAY OF WORK FOR THREE MONTHS! You get summers off as a teacher, I get winters as a landscaper. I’m psyched. I get to play and ski every day; hooray!

Reply

AHHHH This makes me so happy for you! You are going to have the best winter ever…three months wahoo!! Maybe I can come skiing with you:)

Reply

The 1st of every month always makes me happy. NEW BEGINNING, even when there is nothing planned to begin..it gives me an excuse to make something up or start something new.

Out and back races are bitter sweet. I’d rather just get there, but on a positive note I crank it up if I see people on their way back and I am still on my way there.. I get competitive.

Too bad Neiman Marcus doesn’t offer this anymore..this could have been your future advent calendar (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod97000007)… and maybe for Christmas you should invest in this for your niece to go with her Princess outfits..(http://www.dylanscandybar.com/gifts_by-holiday_new-years/gold-jewelry-box/)…win win situation for both of you.

Reply

That cottage is the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life and I will be buying the gold box filled with chocolate for me and my niece!! Thanks for the links:) YAY for new beginnings!

Reply

i want to do the las vegas half…and one day i will. looks like so much fun!

Reply

Out and back…bleck! But you’re right…I’m sure there will be plenty of scenery (aka drunk people) to look at!

Reply

I do out and back for my training runs and I like that because I know exactly where I am, but I feel like for a race it’s almost better not to, because it keeps your mind distracted and not thinking (as much…) about how far you have to go! Although out and back sure makes it easier for spectators!

Reply

You are a beast: Sub-6 min mile!! Amazing J! Why im so happy: a fro yo place has FINALLY opened near my home…2 years after living here! Today’s treat will hence be fro yo with extra toppings..go big or go home right!

Reply

Bahah the first picture is hilarious!!

Reply

A well paced race is almost as much fun as a fast one. In the marathon I did this month, my last 10k was faster than my first 10k. That was fun.

Reply

VICTORIA….that is exactly what I want to do this weekend….you are a rockstar! Way to go on your marathon this month!

Reply

I swear we would be best friends in real life. I feel like you have the exact same sense of humor as me =P and taste in candy.. mmm Swedish Fish! I will be repinning pretty much all your pins thanks.

Have a great day =]

Reply

Wait….I thought we already were real life bff’s:) Hope you have a great day too!

Reply

YOU Will rock this girl!! I know your time will be amazing–you’re so speedy!

I love looking at funny pictures too :) heh.

Reply

I am an awful pacer, my friends try to pace me when they can because I always go out ridiculously fast. My goal is to stick with the pace group and let them keep my pace.
I love pinterest. I pin funny things all the time…the worst is I do it at work and have to contain my laughter. Careful if you are doing it in front of students

Reply

We have the same goal!! We won’t be able to run together until we both learn to slow down in the beginning ha! I save pinterest for lunch because I know I will be laughing the whole time! Have a great day!

Reply

My worst pacing would probably be the last marathon I ran. I stayed on goal pace the first half and then couldnt keep nutrition down the second so it was a struggle to run at all…bummer.
But I paced my 8k really well. Negative splits the whole way!

Happy today – my lunch and the massage I’ll be getting this afternoon!

I dont mind out and back courses. All of my runs are out and back and I think the turn around is the best part!

Nutella is my treat. I cannot stay out of the jar!!

Reply

BUMMER. Nutrition is really hard to figure out with the marathon and it sucks when our buddies don’t do well with it. AWESOME job on your 8k. Massage….lucky, I might have to copy you today:) ENJOY your nutella.

Reply

Ok, 5:55 and then 8:20 at the end…that had to hurt!! I’ve done the going out too fast thing more times than I care to recount…but I’m learning.

I hope you have a fantastic, negative-split run in Vegas! Even when not in top form, you’re still a stud.

Reply

I am the WORST at pacing myself. Truly, truly terrible. That is going to be the focus of my next marathon training cycle. (Now that I know I can do 26.2 I want to do it right and smartly!)

I am also going to try and NOT have any treats today as I have been binging on leftover T-day treats and need to stop!

Reply

I think that the first marathon is truly all about LEARNING from the experience. You’ve got this pacing next marathon, I know it.

Reply

I am running the RNR Vegas 1/2 on Sunday as well and I would LOVE to meet the girl behind the swedish fish!!

Oh and I just ate a chocolate chip cookie fresh out of the oven! :)

Reply

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!! I think we are going to do a meet-up on Saturday at around 2…..I will post it today or tomorrow when I know all of the details. Mhhhhh I need a cookie now:) Can’t wait to meet you!!

Reply

Good luck in Vegas! I ran there last year, and the out and backs aren’t too bad. I’m having a hard time seeing the map – did they change it so you do the boring part first? If yes, then YAY! I hope you will love it. I’m running in Memphis and I am a little terrified of my time goal, but I think my brain needs to be terrified. All of the Ultra training (slow and steady, walk breaks, no overdoing it) is awesome…and now I am excited to push my body and see just what I can do. I just need something different.

Reply

THANKS HANNAH!! Good to know they aren’t too bad. When is memphis? I want to do an ultra..you are my inspiration!

Reply

I think they did change it so the not-so-great part is first. That is awesome. Running the strip during the last half will be awesome! Just get through that first part where it isn’t quite as awesome, and you’ll be in for a treat after. Yay!

Memphis is Saturday. I am so so so happy to run a marathon hard! Memphis isn’t an Ultra, and I think that’s partially why I’m giddy and terrified. I’m so out of “racing” that I think going for it will be just the push I need to get myself back on track with running, mentally. It will be a great weekend for both of us, I just know it! Enjoy Vegas!

Reply

Starting off too fast was a HUGE problem of mine for my first marathon. I have been really focusing on forcing myself to have negative splits on almost every run while training for my next. :) Wishing you luck in VEGAS BABY!

Reply

Hmm, I’ve definitely had issues with pacing in a lot of previous races but hope to fix that. I can’t wait to hear all about this race!! we were initially going to sign up for LV half but, then decided that we could go to Florida and run with SIL instead. Good times!!! Have a great day little lady

Reply

I ran Columbus where I was all over the place. Mi 3 was my fastest and my pacing was a mess.

I hate marys with out and returns. The stupid Hamptons Mary is a bunch of out and backs–LAME.

I made homemade cashew joys. I might have already had one.

Reply

My breakfast this morning made me happy – scrambled eggs with spinach, feta and tomatoes, and a piece of homemade flaxseed bread!

I can’t wait to get my Garmin 405CX on Saturday (Amazon just sent me an email telling me when to expect it!) so I can know what my splits are! I’m not very fast (between 8-8:30 miles) but this should help me train!

I’m going to try to be good today so that I can have treats tomorrow!

Reply

I just signed up for my first 5K like 3 minutes ago! I am so excited :) I am lol at the biscuit can SCARY pic. I am terrified to open them :) My 8 year old does it for me! I had some good songs come up on my ipod while I was running today and that makes me super happy and I am writing a blog to keep my family and friends updated with what is going on here at our house! Have a good day Janae!

Reply

I always tell myself “there’s plenty of time to run faster later” to stop myself from going out too hard. Also, running negative splits is one of the greatest highs I have ever known, (and it makes me happy today to think about it!) so I do all that I can to hold back and maintain a faster second half without sabatoging my time. The energy of the start and the power of the pack makes the risk of going out slow pretty much non-existent.

I like out and back. Not sure why, but maybe because I like to see the faces of those on the ‘back’ who are ahead of me, as well as those who are behind.

Your last post mentioned tapering. I just posted a sort of bizaree tapering post if you have a moment. http://markmatthewsauthor.blogspot.com/2011/11/if-taper-could-talk.html

Reply

lol girl you are crazy fast!!! your ‘oops’ 8:20 mile would be an awesome time for me! lol

Not sure if you ever run little races like 5ks but I saw this one the other day and thought it sounded like so much fun! http://thecolorrun.com — start out all in white and by the end you’re COVERED in colors!!!!!!!!

glgl IN VEGAS!!

Reply

Pintrest is so amazing! I wish I would have discovered it after finals. Whoops. :) you are totally going to rock your race this weekend! I can’t wait to hear about it! You go girl! Put the pedal to the metal!

Reply

Thanks Britt!! Yes, it really is so hard to resist spending hours on pinterest. Good luck on your finals!

Reply

Omg, my seat warmer in my car makes me sooo happy. It’s probably the best part about winter (mostly b/c I hate winter so it doesn’t have much competition) 5:55….I don’t think I’ll ever run a mile that fast!
You’re going to do amazing in Vegas…can’t wait to read about it!

Reply

ahahah! If that child wasn’t dressed like a boy, I would be convinced that it was me… I can’t tell you how often my own reflection startles me! ;D

Reply

can i eat milky ways while I cheer you on instead? :-P

I think if you can run a marathon, your legs are in pretty decent shape. You’re allowed to start pushing the envelope a little bit with the speed! Obviously you have to have a realistic goal – since you haven’t been training for speed and you ARE still on the upswing from injury – like, your goal should match your CURRENT fitness, not your pre-injury fitness. And I know you’ll be smart and back off if something doesnt feel right! But I think you can push it a bit, and w/ a realistic goal and being in tune with how your legs feel, you’ll have a really successful race! :-D

My best-paced race was the 2010 Richmond Half Marathon – my first mile was a 7:15 pace and I ran a negative-split race – the whole second half were 6:50-6:45 miles! And yes, I puked multiple times at the finish lol.

Reply

you ran a 5:55 mile?!?!?!?! insane.

Reply

I have treats daily, mostly 3 times a day!

I love the pic of the biscuit can! I am terrified of opening those things….

Reply

Good luck in Vegas! I ran my first marathon there last year and wanted to return this year but waited too long and it sold out. I was bummed!! I think the whole run at night thing kind of had me hesitating. I know you will do well because you are talented beyond words!! HAVE FUN !! I will be eating Swedish Fish cheering you and the other bloggers on!!

Reply

THANKS SO MUCH SANDY!! That is awesome that your first marathon was in Vegas! I am nervous about the night running too but who knows….maybe I will love it. Thanks for eating the Swedish Fish for us:) Have a great day!

Reply

I hate opening those containers, too. I too leave the room when I have Jason open them. You’re going to do great this weekend!!

Reply

Thank you!! You are right…they are SCARY!

Reply

When I was little and my mom opened one of those Pillsbury packages, she would tell my sister and me that it was the Pillsbury Dough Boy escaping and we had to find him. I honestly believed her and would run around the house looking for that little guy always thinking I was too slow to catch him.

Reply

BAHAHAHA Your mom is awesome, that is so funny and I hope that you still run around the house looking for him!

Reply

And do you know that until recently I thought it was something that all moms told their kids. It came up for some reason when I was with some friends and they burst out laughing.

Reply

Things that are making me happy today = a PJ day with the boys I nanny, making sugar cookies & eating them with said boys, and the coldish weather that is finally coming (to stay?) in Houston!

Reply

I’m veeeeryyyyy happy that we get to cheer you on in another race! I was terrible at pacing my very first race- Ragnar Relay Wasatch Back. I had never run a race before, I was runner 1 and started in a crowd, and I ran so fast my first mile that I ended up with a sideache so bad i thought my spleen burst. I wish I were joking.

I think I did the best pacing for my full marathon. A lot of the reason why is because I knew I had to take it easy or I wouldn’t be able to finish (I was so worried about my IT Band injury). I still didn’t have negative splits, but you know that isn’t how you run Top of Utah.

I will eat some extra swedish fish for you! Right now I’m eating candy canes with my kids and it’s rocking my world.

Reply

I stink at pacing. I am going to try for a negative split at ING Miami in January. I had no clue about pacing my first mary and my second, I got injured in the race. I am training differently, so I hope that helps.

Reply

I like point to point too.
But since I LOOOOOOOVE hiking so much, when I do an out and back, I just tell myself the halfway point is like the summit. I usually spend the next 2 ish miles thinking about all the mts. I have been on top of, the time flies by, and those miles usulally are my best splits.

Treats? Just got done eating kringle that a co-worker brought in.

Reply

This is always my policy: Start fast, run fast in the middle, and then finish very fast

I like out and backs if they aren’t the WHOLE course and if there are fun things to look at along the way. Otherwise, I hate them.

Reply

I’m so looking forward to the LV RnR race! It should be a lot of fun, especially going down the strip at night. Pumped!

Do you know of any meetups that are happening while people are in town?

Reply

WAHOOO!! I am trying to plan something for Saturday at 2 in the afternoon…are you free then? I was thinking the Ghiredelli store for ice cream and chocolate (carb loading:)

Reply

That sounds awesome!! I get in a little before 11am, so I’m good to go anytime. Especially for chocolate! Yeah!

Reply

You are going to totally rock the half this Sunday. I can’t wait for you to completely kill it!!!! I think you have come so far since your injuries and I am so incredibly proud of you. You are my little running hero and always will be. Some day I will be able to run a marathon as fast as you! Some day.

I suck at pacing but I am getting better. Me and Julia are shooting for negative splits in the marathon Sunday so we shall see how it goes.

Reply

Good luck this weekend! I can’t believe how big this race has gotten… I read yesterday that there will be over 40,000 runners. After running NYC and Vegas, you are going to feel like you are running all alone when you do another Utah race! :-)

If you map the course on mapmyrun, it seems like the first half is an ever-so-slight gradual downhill, then obviously a slight incline on the way back. You probably won’t even notice it in either direction, though.

Have fun!!!

Reply

ahhhhh! this was such a great post for me to read. UV and St. George were ultimately “just finish” races for me. Obviously the NUMBER ONE goal in Vegas is still to finish….but I feel like for the first time in a marathon I am going in with a strategy and really want to have the energy left to finish strong and fast. we shall see…shell is pacing me so i have complete faith that we can work together as a strong team :)

you are going to do amazing and i know there really is going to be so much to look at on the course that the miles are going to be flying by! you are ready to conquer this half with speed! I know it! also…i hope i see you so i can give you your candy from Christina :)

GOOD LUCK DEAR FRIEND! Run strong and believe! YOU GOT THIS!

Reply

I am so so so excited for you to run the MARATHON on Sunday…you are going to rock it! What are your plans!?!?! I am thinking of putting something together Saturday afternoon….what do you think?

Reply

That biscuit can picture is totally true for me. I used to think they were kind of fun, until one time I opened a can that was expired and for some reason the whole thing like exploded and it bruised-up my whole hand. Now I’m scared of them.

Reply

It literally hurt you!?!? Oh my goodness, I can’t let my sister read that or else she will be even more afraid of them! SCARY!

Reply

AHAHHAHAH I just died. I freaking love Pinterest.

Reply

1. I need a seat warmer.
2. HAHAHA to your sister. I love her for that.
3. I’ve actually always had negative splits! I need to work on it, though.. I feel like I’m holding back TOO much in the beginning.

Reply

I have no Garmin (being a broke college kid is unfortunate), so I use an app on my phone to track my distances. It doesn’t give me splits or anything like that, though, so I’m not 100% sure what I end up doing in races. I do know that I tend to start off fast and slow down, though, which is not ideal. Hopefully as I work my way up to longer distances, I can get a Garmin (aka graduate and find a job).

Reply

Today I am happy because I am almost done with a crazy/busy semester (sad because I am a senior in college and only have one left though…) and in less than 1 month my pale butt will be on a beach in Mexico!!!! I’m also excited for New Years resolutions, I never keep all of them, but it’s nice to have goals to work towards. I am going to run my first half-marathon this summer so I’m getting geared up to start training next semester!!!!! I look forward to reading more running tips from your blog as I get myself in “running mode.” :D

Reply

For real?! Opening those containers is the BEST part! And I am not a fan of out and backs–loops are my favorite!

Reply

Pinterest is the BEST use of time. Love it! Your UV marathon splits unreal! A sub 6 min mile?!?!?! but I can see how that would hurt in the long run when you have 25 more to do :/

Spencer and I are trying for a PR and with a flat course loaded with entertainment. He keeps saying, “This race should go fast, right?” I think it will be a blast!

Looking forward to a fabulous Vegas weekend!

Reply

hahaha, the 1st and 25th mile comparison is awesome….it still, on average, makes for one fast time! I always positive split, but usually my first and last mile (of halfs and fulls) are only 30-45 seconds apart. That’s not too bad, right?

Out and back’s hurt. There’s the boredom, and also the panic when you are a couple miles before the turnaround point and you feel like you’ve already been running forever — how much more!?!

Good luck this weekend. I think you will surprise us all with how much of your speed you have regained. And I also think you have been wise enough in your training that an injury shouldn’t be a risk.

Reply

I’m doing an out and back course, coming up here in the near future!! It’ll be my first one like that, we’ll see how it goes!

Reply

Worst pacing was probably my trail half. Need I say more?
Incredibly happy: the kittens that are here until Sunday. Staying away from the snacks.

I like out and backs. The “back” always feels like downhill to me! We did Vegas last year. TIP: Watch out for the big concrete posts at the turnaround. Hurts to run into one of those. And I am sure there will be plenty of bright lights to keep you amused.

GOOD LUCK this weekend! enjoy yourself I’m sure you are going to rock it!!

I am running the half in LV this weekend too!! You are so much faster than I am maybe I will see you on your way back from the turn around. I’ll look for swedish fish!! Good luck and have a great time!!

WAHOOO!! Hey could you come to a meet-up on Saturday @ 2?!? More details in my next post wahoo! I would love to meet you!

Reply

Yes yes and yes!! I would LOVE to!!

Reply

I guess I’ll have to go buy some swedish fish and send them to you telepathically so that you get the extra energy to do amazing!!! I’m sure you will do amazing anyway, but that wont hurt ;D Goood luck and have fun!

Reply

This post about the opening the SCARY packages makes me happy. I now know I am not alone :) I am terrified of those things. It is a big joke in our family and sadly the joke is on me!

I like out and backs for training purposes. My running buddies are faster and I get lost easy. Plus if I need to turn back sooner I can instead of being stuck in a loop. For races, it doesn’t matter I get to caught up in the atmosphere to even realize where I am running-I just put one foot in front of the other and follow the crowd!

Reply

Glad to let you know you are NOT alone!! They really are quite scary and we are mean to my sis and chase her around with one…..I am a bad sister!

Reply

LOVE THIS POST! I was cracking up at that first pic!

My first ever race was a 4 mile turkey trot. I finished the first half in like 15 minutes, and thought I was going to die on the second half. I had no idea about pacing at all!! I’m getting better at it now, and I shoot for negative splits to remind myself to take it easier on the first half. I do a lot of out and back runs in my neighborhood just because it’s easier and I don’t have to tackle as many hills, but I prefer loops or point to point.

Have you seen those pace tattos? They help you remember your pace goals http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-240-323–12865-0,00.html

AHHH SO SO COOL!! You are brilliant, thanks for posting the link…I want that!

I promise to load up on Swedish Fish for you this weekend! I did the exact opposite of negative pacing for my last marathon, but it was a lesson learned!
Today I’m being made very happy by Christmas Nerds! I just discovered them and they’re so much more exciting than normal ones.

Utah Valley Marathon 2011 was for sure my worst pacing EVER! I started out waaaay too fast and ended up cramping up the last 11 miles :( OUCH!! I think I paced myself best on the Top of Utah 2011. I could have gone much faster for sure but starting out slow paid off because I felt awesome the last 10 miles :) Good luck on Sunday I know you will do great! Don’t go and hurt yourself ok?!?

Reply

I tend to pace myself too conservatively. I always struggle with finding a good race pace!!
Love this post. I am sure you will do amazing for your race. I know how frustrating it is to build back up after an injury!! you are doing an awesome job! I am going to have to take a look at your “running bible’. That passage is great!

Today I’m happy because I finally had some time to browse through my favourite blogs :)

Just looked @ your ‘my style’ on Pinterest & LOVE your style! Will you come & style me in FL??? I will pay you in Swedish fish & frozen yogurt.

YEP….I will be there tomorrow…only problem is you have way better style than me!

I’m a horrible pacer, I start of slow and then slow down. heehee
Really though I always finish and think I had more to give out there. I’m all about self preservation or laziness, not sure which.
Good luck on your race, I bet it is going to be an incredible event!

Hey!
I love reading your blog! Its soo great! I just had a quick question: Which Garmin would you suggest for a 19 year old running college girl?? I really want one for christmas, and iv tried looking through all the different models, but i really dont know enough about them to pick one out! Any help would be great!!
Thanks!

Reply

HEY MORGANNE!! Thank you so so much for your comment, you made my day! I am so happy that you are looking into getting a Garmin! I have the 305 and I love it! It has everything I need and is a lot cheaper now. Billy has the 610 and here is his review (he really loves his too):

Let me know what you decide on getting…SO SO EXCITING!

Love that first picture SO much. I maybe have Pin’d it myself :).
I have only been doing races for a year, but my first race was the Layton Half last year. It was my worst for pacing AND it was out and back. I really don’t like out and back courses. I think pacing is still a work in progress for me.
Treat for today is snickerdoodle cake. I’ve decided I just need to have some around at all times.

Reply

Timely post! I’m trying to figure out my pacing plan for the White Rock 1/2 marathon in Dallas on Sunday. I’ve had my dream big goal in mind… and then today I tripped and got pretty scraped up. *sigh* I don’t think I injured anything that will effect my “running mechanics” but my confidence is shaken and I’m 2nd guessing my goal. I generally try to run negative splits and run the first 1/2 of the race more conservatively. Any tips for calculating mile-by-mile pace?

Reply

um mile 1 5:55 in a marathon…i can barely achieve that in a 5k!!! my gosh woman you quite the competitor! i think you know your body better then anyone else does, so as long as you listen to it and react when necessary then you are going to crush it. well, you’re going to crush it anyways ;). you have the heart of a champion, don’t worry your pretty little head because you know how to run the race. just go out and do what you were born to do…run like a maniac and have the time of your life doing it.

We were cleaning out the pantry the other day getting rid of all our “simple carby” things that we no longer eat (ie: macaroni and cheese :( and my husband tried to throw away my big bag of Swedish Fish…I freaked out, proceeded to snatch then out of his hand while yelling, so he put them back! I’m going to go ahead and run my Half on Sunday, even though I’m no where near ready, but I’m doing it with a friend in the same boat….and just for fun! We’ll see how it goes!

I ran my first half marathon two weeks ago and definitely made the mistake of starting way too fast! My first 4ish miles we’re about a minute and half faster than my goal pace and I paid for it in the end missing my A+ goal time by 4 minutes. Being a new runner I’m still really happy that I finished at all! I’m running a 15k on Saturday and my goal is to work on my pacing and make sure Ive got enough left to kill the last few miles. I think it will be a little easier knowing there will be lots and lot of chocolate at the finish because its the Ghiradelli Hot Chocolate race. =D Good luck on your race!!
