NYC MARATHON RECAP!!!

I don’t even know where to start with the recap of this race.  Either I am still on cloud nine and high on endorphins or I am so exhausted from going to bed at 2:30 this morning and waking up at 4 to make my morning flight that I am at a loss for words, either way I will probably start tearing up and telling the strangers next to me about my experience @ the NYCM as I type this.

First up…..I had a hilarious/fun/optimistic/excited runner buddy CARRIE (soon to be Bradshaw…awesome right?) to ride the bus with and hang out with the entire morning which made time fly and made my smiling muscles quite fatigued.

IMG 0585

We got on the 5:30 a.m. bus and never had to wait in line or skip a beat as we were transported to the race.  We arived and got our fill of bagels, gatorade and hot chocolate.  We were also given sweet Dunkin’ Donuts beanies  and the longest we waited for a porta-potty was five minutes.

I was so worried about being cold while waiting 3.5 hours for the race to start but my three layers and hot cocoa kept me warm.  Plus, it was a warm morning for the beginning of November especially considering that it snowed in NYC last weekend!

IMG 0576

For once I wasn’t the only person taking 5,000 pictures a minute.  I also wasn’t the only person talking obsessively about all things running but I may have been the only one that went back for more and more bagels, I couldn’t get enough and plain bagels are my new go to pre-race meal.

IMG 0581

IMG 0578

I thought this couple was the cutest thing in the world.

IMG 0584

As soon as I went into my corral I found SkinnyRunner and Miles.  It was a November Day miracle that I found them so quickly. This was both Mile’s and SR’s second NYCM and so I quizzed them about the course.

IMG 0590

Below is the starting line. We crossed about two minutes after the clock started.  The National Anthem was sung, the energy was incredibly high and I could not stop thinking about how everything works out.  Even though I missed Boston due to stress fractures and wondered it I would ever run a marathon without pain again (just a little dramatic)….. I was there.  Happy, healthy and in the best city in the world:)

IMG 0591

The three of us started together and I thought for sure that SR would just zoom off because she is incredible (remember how she ran a marathon the day before?).  The race started with an incline up the bridge for the first mile.  It was nice to be packed in so tight with everyone to prevent going out too fast and not burning out after .75 of a mile.  Miles was off once we reached the top of the bridge because he is speedy and because SR and I were probably a little embarassing to be around as we were joking around and taking way too many pictures.

For every marathon and even some half marathons I always feel nauseated for the first 10k.  Guess what, yestereday….NOTHING, I felt perfect……why?  1.  Plain bagels (no pb anymore, my stomach doesn’t like it before a race) are my new miracle race food.  2. No pressure.  My own anxiety about races makes me sick and for yesterday’s race I placed zero pressure on myself.

IMG 0595

The bridges were my favorite (minus the whole heart rate skyrocketing on the uphill) because the views were incredible.  It kind of looks like the buildings are fake in this picture.

IMG 0607

The crowds were the best and look at this sweet sign…..it made my life!  Yes, those are swedish fish on the poster board!
IMG 0626

Miles 1-21 went by so fast.  This was the first time I didn’t listen to music during anything longer than 10 miles and it was awesome because I had this girl to talk to the whole time and all of the amazing runners and crowds around me to keep me going.   I also loved the end of each bridge where there were ridiculous amounts of people cheering us on.  THANK YOU SPECTATORS….you made the race.

Best way to tour a city…running, hello?!?

Screen Shot 2011 11 07 at 9 07 51 AM

I think another reason I felt good for the majority of this race (the end is bound to be hard no matter how well you are doing) is because of fueling.  I started taking shot blocks at mile 7 and took them often without letting myself get to the point where I was low on glycogen.  Plus, we had gatorade and water at most of the aid stations (which felt like they were every mile).

The temps were perfect and the shade from the buildings and slight breeze felt amazing.

IMG 0612

Not gonna lie….Central Park was tough.  The rolling hills were not being friendly to my tired legs but I just kept thinking, this is NOT supposed to feel comfortable.  SR stayed with me even though my pace slowed down and she was a great encouragement and stayed with me and helped me to finish strong(ish).  I am sure your read her recap already but do not believe her when she said they were small rollers in Central Park;)  They felt like a 33% incline to me.

(I was too tired to take a lot of pictures towards the end of the race and so the below is not Central Park)

IMG 0614

We finished in 3:36:30 and I couldn’t be more thrilled.  My legs are tired today but not sore. My feet are sore but that is probably because I spent the rest of the day walking the city.  Did you think I was going to waste a second of my time in NYC by relaxing….. or showering for that matter?

Isn’t it just beautiful? I haven’t taken it off yet and will be wearing it until I get next year’s medal (come on, under my shirt….I am not that big of a bragger weirdo).

IMG 0623

Those legs of mine have not seen the sun in approximately 2.3 months until yesterday.

NEW YORK CITY was my absolute favorite race ever.  I have zero complaints and I hope to do this race every year possible and have already started my New York piggy bank so that I can get out there next year too.

2 Goals accomplished:

1.  Negative splits (running the second half of the distance at the same speed or even slightly faster than the first half).  I have never ran a marathon with negative splits and SR and I did yesterday….1:48 for each half.  Pacing myself correctly is something I really want to bring to the table in my future racing.

2.  Staying positive and not comparing myrself to last year’s times.  I didn’t waste any of my precious time on this course worrying about what I used to run and took my time soaking in every second. Plus, how can you not stay positive with a running partner and people screaming your name all around you (I will always be putting my name on my shirt for races ((and maybe even real life clothes)) from now on)?

———————————————————————

Have you ever ran New York?  Is it on your wish list?  Did you watch it?  Did you track people?

Have you ever done two races in one weekend?  Do you think you ever will?

Do you ever put your name on your race shirts?

Favorite bagel shop or bagel flavor?

-Cinnamon raisin with walnut/raisin/cinnamon cream cheese.  Anyone want to send me some NY bagels?  I will send you swedish fish.

PS don’t think you escaped the rest of the trip highlights because of my lack of internet…stay tuned, there is a lot more to come.

You are SO amazing Janae!! Amazing for doing an ‘easy’ 3.36 marathon and amazing for waiting for over 3 hours in the cold for the race to start! :P

I want to do NYC Marathon in the future for sure! Especially with that huge medal! ;) And I’ve got two races this weekend, but they aren’t two marathons haha! I’ve no idea how SkinnyRunner did that- my legs would’ve fallen off!!

Reply

Oh my GOSH you are such a rockstar!! I have never run NY but it is definitely on my radar for a future race…maybe for 2013 (: I have never tracked anyone before but the way they have it set up so that you can is really neat!!

Question – I’ve wanted to take a camera on some of my races but I don’t know what the best way to transport it would be. Do you keep it in a pouch or something or just carry it in your hand or what?? I am kind of obsessed with documenting everything through pictures but obviously I want to be comfortable as priority numero 1 when I am running – – so how do you do it??

Favorite bagels are a three-way tie between Panera’s cinnamon crunch, BYU’s asiago cheese, and Einstein’s chocolate chip. YUM.

Congrats yet again! I can’t wait to see your progression as you head towards your Sub 3 goal!!

Reply

I’d sell my first born for an endless supply of cinnamon crunch (and preferably someone to heat them for me and clean up after.. those suckers are messy!)

Reply

Hahaha I know what you mean! But sticky/messy/whatever…SO worth it. Yum yum yum yum.

Awesome :) I love the recap. I have only been running a month and I am just soaking up all the info and excitement! I think I might be a complete running geek before its all over! Right now I am just enjoying the running :) Bagels are yum. My favorite is plain with jalepeno cream cheese. I am from Texas and San Antonio used to have the best jalepeno cream cheese! But when it comes to bagels I am not picky! ;)

I am going to start looking for some 5K’s to run and I am hoping to run the Pensacola Half marathon next November! I hope I can do it!

Can’t wait to hear more about the trip!
Take care!

AMAZING. so glad you had a wonderful time, and loved seeing the camaraderie between you and Skinny Runner!! What a team :)

Reply

I watched it yesterday on TV and it was a crazy race. I wish they would show more runners and not just the men and women competing. But it was a great race! Its one my wish list, but for when I’m not sure.

Thats a great race recap! Looks like yall had a great time! Did you eat those Swedish Fish? (I think Elmers is non-toxic) You and SR had a great finish time! Thats pretty awesome!

Reply

Ahhh Janae you totally rocked that marathon! I am so proud of you!!

Reply

Congrats! So happy to hear it went well!

Reply

I ran NYC in 2010, so I was all over the tracking this year! They have the best tracking system of any race I have ever seen hands down! I hope to be back for 2012.

I’ve definitely never ran 2 races in one weekend. My body just cant handle that!

When I ran Boston, I took a strip of Duct Tape and wrote my name on it, and then stuck it to the tank I ran in. It was sooo great having the crowd yell my name as I passed! I felt like the city was all cheering for me (yea, self involved, i know!). I will definitely be doing that again!!

Reply

I’m SO proud of you!!! And I’m really glad you’ve gotten over the whole comparison game – it’s a losing one!

Janae you are a rockstar! I love your blog. You are so funny and super amazing. Congrats on your awesome marathon time!

I’d like to do NY maybe next year.
I did the Goofy Challenge this year and it was tough. Not sure I’ll do two races in a weekend again!
I love cinnamon raisin bagels, pumpkin bagels, and everything bagels!
I don’t put my name on my race shirt usually.
Can’t wait to hear more about your trip and see more photos! You’re such an inspiration! Congrats again! xo

AWESOME recap and MAJOR CONGRATS to you and SR! You have totally convinced me that I am going to have to try working my way up to a full marathon so that I can run NY one day.

GREAT JOB!!!

Yay I’m so excited to finally get to read your recap!! Congratulations, girl. I’m so happy for you.

Did you bring your camera with you, or was that your phone?? Just curious how you managed to carry it the whole time! ;)

And I think I’m going to steal your idea for my half marathon this coming weekend and just eat a plain bagel that morning! (Wish me luck … this is my first … eek!)

Reply

So happy to read your recap. You are such an incredible runner. I can’t believe you ran a 3:36 and you don’t have sore legs. Are you human?????? ;) I wish I could have an H&H Bagel from NYC. Einstein is good, but it’s not the same.

Reply

Greatness! So glad you had such an amazing experience at NYC! Reading everyone’s recaps is really making me want to try and enter again next year. I did the Marine Corps Marathon this year and it was awesome!

I have never put my name on my race shirt but I want to in the future…

And I like all bagels, really. I don’t discriminate!

Reply

CongratsCongrats!! How exciting! I loveee pumpernickel bagels haha :)

Congratulations! Awesome race. NYCM is on my marathon list, for sure. I was in the lottery this year, but didn’t get in…crossing my fingers for next year though!

Congrats Janae, awesome race! New york? One day, my friend. One day.

P.S. Amy is only *somewhat* annoyed that 3:36 was “easy” for you ;)

Negative splits, HOORAY!

Love the name on the shirt, in fact, I just got back from the craft store to get letters to iron onto my shirt for my MARATHON (eek) this weekend too!!

Sooo proud of you my friend!! :) You did soo great!! SR is a great person to run with and I’m so happy that you had the opportunity to do it in NY!! You two are both awesome in spirit, athleticism and just great all around!!

YES…NYCM 2012 for me FOR SURE!! Already looking forward to it!! I know it’s going to be very memorable!!!

Best bagel…probably Einstein bagels (cinnamon raisin) in Vegas. But, sounds like once I try a NYC bagel it will have my heart.

Again, girl I’m soo proud of you!! YOU’RE BACK!! I know how good this feels to you!! Enjoy it, and hugs from me! :)

I have been waiting for this recap :) I am SO PROUD OF YOU!! You and SR rocked this race! So fun to see you guys do it together!

Reply

So amazing! You girls rock! Great time, great recap! Congrats!

Reply

so awesome! glad you enjoyed the race so much — i’m with you feeling those “rolling” hills in central park :) this year was my second nyc marathon. next year is likely to be my third! i could possibly run 2 races in a weekend, but only if they were low mileage – not 2 crazy marathons! i’ve run ny and watched many times, so OF COURSE i wear my name on my shirt for the marathon :) everything bagels are the absolute best, imho

Reply

SO awesome! NICEly done!! Way to accomplish your goals!

You’re so fast :)

Great job!

Janae!

Yes, I will mail you bagels from Pick-a-Bagel! I told you they were the best! :-)
I’m running New York next year and I’m definitely putting my name on my shirt!
PS –
I better see you in March!!!

Reply

I am taking you up on the bagels….you are so right and I completely trust your taste buds 100% after fro-yo and bagels. LOVE YOU! I already told billy all about March:)

Reply

YOU ARE SO AMAZING! Great job at not putting pressure on yourself and just doing what you felt was good. I think it’s so funny that you and Skinny Runner keep saying it was the other’s speed that kept you going :)

I feel like wearing your name on your shirt is like wearing a birthday button at Disneyland, it just makes the experience better!

I LOVE bagels. SO much. It totally depends on my mood but usually a good whole grain bagle with cream cheese. YUM.

Reply

You guys did so awesome!! You ran an awesome race and I tracked you and cheered for you in my pjs in the living room. Congrats!

Reply

Reading this was awesome!!! You did so great! Way to rock this marathon. And if I were you, I would totally wear that beauty (medal) on the outside, you earned it. And please bring some pizza back along with those bagels!!

Reply

YAY for your amazing race day in NYC!!!!! I ran it last year and am in it for 2012. I had to defer 2011 because of pregnancy. Hope you are at next year’s start line too :)

Reply

Hey Janae – Congrats on an awesome race!! Sounds like you had a great experience yesterday and that is AMAZING!
I ran NYC as well, and despite the race starting out a bit rough for me, I completely agree with you that the spectators MADE the race. I literally felt CARRIED by their cheers to a PR! Such an indescribable feeling.

I can’t wait to watch the DVR of the race tonight! (runner geek alert)

I think wearing your name on your shirt is such a great motivator, and it’s really helped me with mindfulness, and staying in the present by appreciating the personal cheers from spectators (as opposed to dreading the miles ahead).

Thanks for the great recap!!! :-)

Reply

ANNE!!! Your comment made my day and I wish we could have met. It really did feel like we were carried….it is going to be hard to do any other marathon with fewer crowds. CONGRATS ON YOUR PR!!! Enjoy the race and I will be watching it online!

Reply

Yay! Congratulations on your incredible finish…it WAS strong, not strong(ish) you did amazing :) I would love to run NY someday…I love cinnamon raisin bagels, and sesame seed too…Panera has great cream cheese, and I am sure the NY bagaels were amazing! Cant wait to see the rest of your recap :)

Reply

Congratulations, sweet girl!!!!!! I think I’ve been following your blog for nearly two years now…And even though I am definitely not a runner, I have followed the goals you set for yourself and have been cheering you on all the way. I might have teared up a few times reading that (yeah…I *might* be al ittle hormonal too, but so what). It’s just so darn great to see that despite the Boston loss due to stress fractures you MADE IT BACK to healthy again! It’s like watching a movie where the main character faces adversity, but wins in the end. Just so proud of you!!!

Reply

AHHHHH I’m so glad you loved it!!!! Girl you kicked serious ass and wahhhh I wish I could have been there to see Padre run but my obligation was here at SU. Mrow. Next year. Also I scavenged through those pictures to see if I saw Padre. I didn’t. BUT if you saw a man with a Syracuse shirt and an SU hat on, that was him ;) love you!!!

Reply

Congrats on a great race Janae! Sounds like you not only had a great time, but also learned some great things about pacing, fueling, etc. that will be very useful in the future.

3:36 is a great time on a tough course on WAY less than ideal training… you are a SUB THREE marathoner, no doubt about it that you have the ability to run that fast! Just stay healthy, consistent, and its all yours in 2012! :-)

Reply

Yea! good Job!

I had my name on my shirt yesterday and for the first 5 miles kept forgetting it was there and wondering how people knew my name! duh! :)

Reply

BAHAHAH That is hilarious…..too much excitement to remember things like our names being on our shirts. I WANT DETAILS FROM YOU!

Reply

Oh man. I can email you the whole story if you want but long story short – the first 10 miles were magical (if a little quicker then they should have been. Classic rookie mistake, right? ;)) at mile 10 my stomach turned and wouldn’t deal with any fuel or gatorade. Anything I drank or ate was making me super nauseous so I ended up running /power walking the last 16 miles on a few sips of water and a cookie and orange wedge from a spectator. I finished in just under 6 hours, which was my C goal but was really disappointed. I KNOW I had that 5:15 I was aiming for in me.

After much thought I realized it wasn’t the actual clock time I was upset about mostly but I think I’m disappointed that something I put SO much effort into training for went so poorly. :( it wasn’t all bad and I definately had a ton of fun in places but I just wish my stomach had coraparated and I felt up to really appreciating everything… (sorry this is so long!)

Reply

OH MICHELLE!!! I am so so sorry about your stomach issues. That is the absolute WORST! You have that 5:15 and believe me I have gone out to fast way too many times! I know what you mean about training SO hard for it and then not performing how you would like. How are you feeling today? Let me know if you need anything!

Reply

aww thanks Janae! You are the sweetest!!

Reply

congrats to you! it looks like you had the time of your life in nyc! the fact that you ran a flipping 3:36 coming off of a very serious injury without training a bizillion miles is inspiring and touches my heart. so proud of you beautiful lady!

glad to hear that the race was amazing too because this race is for sure on my bucket list. i say good call on bagging the pb pre race, it never works out for me either. i don’t know if it’s because of the fat content or that it is just digests slow, but it always kills me when i have it before a run or race.

again congrats to you on a great and fun race! this is such a cool experience that you had.

Reply

great job Janae! I watched some of the race live online and was thinking about you/looking for you. Glad it went so well! I was cheering you on from Kansas!

Reply

You are amazing and that is such an incredible race! Congrats! I loved reading your recap – I have entered the lottery twice and have yet to get a spot in the race, hopefully sooner rather than later :) And my favorite bagel is whole wheat everything – yummy!

Reply

I have never ran two races in one weekend that is seriously hardcore. As someone that has battled injuries I am SO happy for you that you got to race New York =)

Reply

Awesome!! Congrats! :D That looks like it was a really fun race!

Reply

Wow. You’re amazing and I love your 3:36 easy run being so close to my PR ;) I also think it’s absolutely brilliant to see my favourite two running bloggers racing side by side, and being magnanimous in their recaps – each of you is saying that the other pushed her on to do her best. Brings a tear to even my cynical eyes :)

I tracked both of you, and also Ada from Out to Munch NYC who ran a 3:26! Running NYC would be a dream of mine, for sure. I’ve never done two races in one week-end. Two half-marathons would be okay, but I have no idea how Skinny Runner does full marathons back to back at that speed. Incredible. There aren’t many long races on consecutive days in the UK, and I’m not much of a 5 or 10K fan.

At the Great North events they’ve started putting names on our numbers, and at the Great North Run this year it was indeed so wonderful to have complete strangers yelling ‘come on Jess!’ Really made the day for me.

I don’t have enough bagels in my life. I am sure cinnamon raisin would be a winner for me though.

Once again: Janae=rockstar.

Yay Janae! You are absolutely incredible. Coming off of that injury to rock this race? Inspiring!

Have you ever ran New York? Is it on your wish list? Did you watch it? Did you track people?

— No to all of the above, except maybe for the wish list. I’m trying to pick a first marathon for next year (maybe!) in the fall, and NYC and Chicago both sound awesome.

Have you ever done two races in one weekend? Do you think you ever will?

— I haven’t but I plan on it. My long term goal is Going Goofy in 2014. That’s the Disney half marathon on Saturday followed by the full marathon on Sunday. I’ve picked 2014 because the race is in January, just a few weeks after I turn 40. Great way to celebrate!

Do you ever put your name on your race shirts?

— Nope, just have it printed on my bib whenever they do it.

Favorite bagel shop or bagel flavor?

— Plain bagels with spread (usually PB), chocolate chip without. I will admit to be entirely un-classy on the bagel front. I actually like the Thomas plain bagels which are like total white bread pillows. I can’t help it – I just like them!

Reply

Yay! so happy for you and SR on this race! I was obsessively tracking you two on the computer. It was fun to virtually stalk you ;) Congrats on an amazing race and awesome finish. You both rocked it!

I love a good jalapeno & cheese bagel with jalapeno cream cheese… or an onion bagel. I like the savory- not so much the sweet.

(espicially the NYC Marathon) I am too young for one now, but I am doing a half marathon in January and am super pumped.

P.S. I KNOW that you will break 3 hours in the near future. All us readers have complete faith in you, just take the pressure of yourself and let it happen! The more relaxed you are, the better you run. Any dream is possible if you stick to it!

Reply

JENNY….you made my day. Thank you so much for tracking me and I could feel you routing me on;) I can’t wait to hear about your half and thanks for believing in me!

Reply

I can feel and hear your excitement….I’m glad you had the chance to reach that runner’s cloud 9 after such a long period of taking it easy at the Doctors Orders. This post makes me almost consider doing an insanely overwhelming crowded race….it sounds like a great experience. Keep riding those endorphins and be proud, you performed so well and so wildly smart (especially the negative splitting and feeling good today — injuries begone!)

Reply

I think you should try a crowded race, the energy was incredible. Plus, I am too prideful to stop and walk with thousands of people watching;) I can’t wait for your PR….I think I might have to come cheer you on.

Reply

Yay! Janae I am so happy for you!! Congrats on such a great race :D.

Reply

Congratulations!!!! I have never run NYC, but would love to. You rocked it. I’m glad you took the time to enjoy the race.

Reply

Congratulations Janae!!!! I could feel your big smile through every word of this post :) So so so awesome!!

NY is on my list- now if I could just get in!! 2012 baby, 2012! I didn’t get to track anyone because I had a race. I missed almost all of the action (other than tweets). Booo! My cousins live in Manhattan and did go watch and said it was ah-mazing!!

Will I ever do 2 races in one weekend? Maybe…I am doing back to back weekends in January (a full then a half) so that may be as close as it gets for this old lady :)

Fave bagel? Hmmmm…Cinnamon Crunch from Panera is pretty darn good!

Reply

SO FREAKING AWESOME!!! Love both of y’alls recaps.

Momma has ran that race 3 times, I hope I am next!!!

Reply

bagels and hot cocoa sounds super cuddly!! love the Race Recap – so awesome that you loved the whole thing cannot believe you did this well coming off your injury!!!

Reply

So glad you had an awesome race and got such a good time too! I had fun watching the NY marathon yesterday because my little boy was sick and I stayed home from church with him. I don’t think I’d ever want to do 2 races in one weekend. I don’t know how SR did that! The only time I’ve put my name on my race shirt was for Boston. It’s so fun to hear people cheering for you by name. Can’t wait to see your next updates!

Reply

SO AMAZING! Great job again!!!!! Come back SOON!

Reply

i really am proud of you! Congrats of the negative splits! I love all of the pictures and I’m glad you took the time to enjoy the scenery/the atmosphere of the race. I didn’t listen to music for half of my half marathon because there was bands/people along the one section. It’s amazing what support can do while you’re running.

Proud of you, Lady!

Reply

This sounds like so much fun!!! I am just getting into distance running but very seriously contemplating signing up for my first marathon next year – Chicago 2012!!!!

Reply

DO IT DO IT DO IT….how’s that for pressure;) I am really wanting to do that one too next year….blogger party!

Reply

haha sounds like a plan to me, I’ve already got two other bloggers thinking about it too…

Reply

i was looking forward to your recap and it did not disappoint! awesome job! i’m running jacksonville in december and i just started experimenting with shot bloks on my long runs…i’m curious how often you ate them/how many you ate during your race. again, congrats!

Reply

Fantastic run :) and excellent recap! I know you felt great about negative splitting and simply about being out there…I am so very happy for you :)

Reply

First off SO PROUD OF YOU!!!!

I def want to do NYCM in the future! I’m running the philadelphia rock’n’roll marathon on nov. 20!

I ran the Goofy’s challenge the past 3 yrs but last year I did the 5k on Friday also then the half marathon Saturday then the full marathon on Sunday. That was a blast!!

Once again I’m so proud of you and SR!! How fun! I’m kinda jealous of you both!!

Can’t wait to hear the rest of your trip.

Reply

You better tell me all about phili! YOU ARE GOING TO ROCK IT!! Goofy’s challenge sounds like so much fun. Thanks for your sweet words, you made my day!

Reply

Congratulations on finishing in such a great time..and enjoying it so much!!

Reply

CONGRATS!!! Way to go! What a race!

Reply

Way to go, Janae! Great run. Glad you enjoyed yourself through it all, too. I think that’s often the part that people miss out on.

Reply

Congratulations!! New York is such a great place! I had to do a walk recently over the Brooklyn Bridge and boy do I remember how crowded it was then, I can only imagine how tight it was during the run!

Reply

I have never run NYC and never plan to run a full marathon. But NYC is an amazing place to be. Any time.
I don’t think I have ever run two races in one weekend. If I did, they were 5k’s or 10k’s.
My name should be on my bib for this coming weekend. And I think Disney put it there. But I have never done it on purpose.
Cinnamon Crunch Bagels from Panera’s.

What a great race and a great time, especially when you only had 6 weeks of training. YOU TOTALLY ROCK!

I’d totally do two races in a weekend, but only halfs. Marathons? No way. But I am looking forward to training for a few halfs and then a full marathon once the baby is born in June.

Yeah for running!

Reply

I almost died when I saw on SR’s blog that y’all two ran together….my two favorite bloggers in one place!!!! LOVED both of your race recaps!!! I ran the marathon in Savannah with SR on Sat, but about an 50 min behind her! (It was my first!)

Thanks to Billy for keeping us updated with cute pics…

Glad you figured didn’t put pressure on yourself and just got to enjoy running!! :)

Reply

CONGRATS!! I LOVED READING YOUR Savannah recap. Girl, you did incredible for your first marathon, holy cow!

Reply

This post is SO awesome; you did such a great job! I cannot imagine how accomplished you feel after completing something like that in such good time.

I can’t wait to see some more of NYC. And btw….that sign is totally awesome!

You’re amazing, enjoy every single second of the high this past weekend has left you on……..this is what living life is all about…….savor it!

Reply

Wow! This was so fun to read. Awesome job! Congratulations!

Reply

Awesome recap. What a great day for the race, and I love reading the you let yourself simply enjoy it. BUT, I need to correct you on one point … Boston is the best city in the world. Go ahead, and run Boston, and then we’ll talk.

Reply

I had no idea you ran a negative split! Dang! Alright for you!!

Reply

I’m so happy for you! I’m glad the weather was great, and that you feel great. Way to go! Yea!!!!!

Congrats!

Reply

I don’t know if I’ve ever told you before Janae but you are a huge inspiration for me to keep running. I am so happy that despite all the ups and downs with your running this year that everything has come out well. Congratulations on an awesome race and you keep wearing that medal until next year – you are a champion!

Reply

Yay, congratulations!! I love all your pictures from the course. I can’t believe you took so many! Glad you had such a great time visiting our beautiful city!

Reply

Way to go, RockStar!!!!! I am so proud of you and your positive spins… HOW do you take pics AND run?! I would ruin by sweat and/or drop my phone every mile of a race!

Reply

LOVED reading this! I was totally thinking about you all weekend and kept checking for your recap. You are a huge inspiration and an all-around rockstar!! Great Job Janae!!

Reply

awesome job! i tracked you :) i did not wear my name, but my friend josh’s name for my first marathon… i did too eat 2 plain bagels and drank warm coffee pre-race.

again, awesome. so happy for you!

Reply

Awesome job! I had to defer until 2012… I can’t wait to run this next year!

Reply

you freaking rocked it!!!!!!!! and i am so proud of you! simply amazing. wear that medal with pride. you EARNED IT! cant wait to see you and celebrate! CONGRATS!!!

Reply

Reading this had me wearing the biggest smile ever! I’m so happy for you, and couldnt help but think about how you were doing yesterday! You continue to be the strongest, most positive, and motivating person I have never met! Will you be my coach???;-D congrats lady!!!!!!

Reply

Congratulations Janae! Great race. A lot of runners out there in blogland are saying how great the fans in NYC are when it comes to supporting the marathon – maybe someday I’ll get to experience it myself!

So…we all know how you feel about swedish fish, but what are your thoughts on blue whales?

Reply

woo-hoo!!!! congratulations, on you run!

Reply

Great race recap! So glad the race went so well!!!

That must have been an amazing feeling crossing the finish line after all you’ve been through the past year.

And having your name on your shirt seems like a great idea, I might have to do this for my next big race that I do!

Reply

Congratulations! You did great and I know you had a blast!

Reply

YESSS!!! I was checking obsessively yesterday to see if you had updated! So glad it went well… You did AWESOME! Maybe someday I will be fast like you ;) Great job!

Reply

I was smiling the whole way through this post! You are amazing Janae, and so exceptional, great job pretty lady :)

Reply

Congrats, pretty lady! You did awesome!

Reply

Janae Congrats on an amazing race…your splits where unbelievable!!!!!
I couldn’t sleep knowing it was coming on tv and wondering if my dvr would override Dora….so I can just imagine how exciting it must have been for you. I cried several times just watching on TV! I am running my first marathon in less than two weeks in Philadelphia and I want to thank you so much for all the info you put out here (def going to put my name on my shirt now!!!). I’m extremely worried, excited, etal but it’s calming to see that it can be done and done with grace and a good dose of humor!
Curious…
After your first did…how long before you decided to do it again?

Reply

Congrats on a great race and an even better attitude! :) NYC is my dream city. I would love to run that marathon someday. Putting your name on your shirt is genius in a race like that. I think I’m doing it next big race I do!

Reply

You and SR are my favorite bloggers so I was very excited to find out that you were running together!! GREAT JOB girls, I can feel your excitement and smiled the whole time I read your (and SR’s) recap. I love everything bagels, but on race days I usually have a plain with a little bit of pb, maybe next time I’ll skip the pb and see if it works for me as well as it did for you!

Reply

Congrats Janae! This was so exciting to read! Looks like you’re spreading marathon fever!

I’m so glad you mentioned something about having your name on your shirt. I am running my first half in a couple of weeks, and someone told me I should put my name on my shirt. It’s a pretty small race, to my knowledge, so I don’t know if having my name on my shirt will make me look silly…thoughts?

Reply

Congrats on the great race and the great goals that you accomplished :) Now go eat all the Swedish fish and fro yo you want!

Reply

Oh good I was hoping there’d be more NY posts!!!! And CONGRATULATIONS!!! now that you’ve found your perfect race fuel (bagels are mine too! cinnamon raisin, and NY bagels are the best but I will settle for Einstein’s), your next marathon will be epic on a whole new level. It looks like you had SO.MUCH.FUN in NY and I hope you got to refuel with all the amazing eats of the city!!! NY is totally on my race wish – list, especially because the new qualifying times are a good challenge for me…maybe I’ll see ya there next year! ;)

Reply

You have convinced me to add the NYC marathon to my bucket list!!!

I can’t eat PB before running ever…even just a few minutes, so I stick with oatmeal, chia seeds, and banana.

Congrats again on a successful and healthy race!

Reply

After stalking you and SR through this whole NYC marathon, I sooooooo want to do it one year! Granted, I haven’t ever done a full marathon, but I figure NY is sea level, so why not?!

You did so awesome! You should be ridiculously proud of yourself!!!

Reply

I am running NY next year and am the most excited!! I went and watched this year-it was incredible. I can’t wait to run a marathon my city that I love so much!!!! It was so inspiring to watch the runners and so fun to see the runners around the city afterwards. I cannot wait for next year!!

Congrats on having such a great race!!

Reply

Congrats!! So glad you had an amazing race! Unfortunately I had to visit friends in PA so I couldn’t come out and cheer :( And I know I’m a lurker and don’t comment all the time but I will GLADLY send you bagels whenever you want!! Nothing beats a good NY bagel!

Reply

yay!! good job!! this is amazing. not gonna lie…i got on the nyc marathon page a few times to see how you were doing. every time, i was AMAZED at how speedy you were! and how so close to the same your miles were pace wise. ps, i probably couldn’t run 1 mile at your pace and i have not had any stress fractures. so i think you are thebomb.com. so glad you had fun!

Reply

I’M SO PROUD OF YOOOUUUUU! I loved tracking you.. and I still wanna be you. please just come run a marathon with me and hold my hand so I can shave off a good 13 minutes from my time? yes?

just say yes.

Reply

oh, CONGRATS, and just like everyone else has said i’m so proud of u! look how far u’ve come in just six short weeks…and then to bust out a 3:36 is amazing!!

i love your play by play!! u girls crack me up and did a fantastic job at the race…if i had just run that u can bet u’d have to pry that medal off of my sweaty body! :)

great job, keep up the positive outlook on it all and power to plain bagels. :)

Reply

Ah I am SO happy and proud of you, Janae! Well done for rocking it…loved reading this recap and keep wearing that medal..although please tell Billy to take care, wouldnt want it to whack him in the head while you guys are asleep haha!

Reply

I have done 2 races in one weekend. Earlier this year I did the Legacy Midnight 1/2 Marathon and then a couple of hours later I headed down to American Fork and did the Tour de Donut. It was SO fun.

The NYC Marathon is actually on my bucket list of marathons to do. I’ve got to get 1 marathon under my belt first and that is coming up. Ogden Marathon 2012 here I come!!!

Reply

I tried so hard to watch the marathon somehow but since we were in Utah for the Snow Canyon half we had really limited internet and cable access :( Soooo excited to read this update!! Made me happy, excited, and inspired — just like your blog always does!!! I’m also really glad you put your name on your shirt. It makes such a difference in races with lots of spectators. I did it for Boston and it was amazing to have people cheer for you nonstop! Awesome race, Janae!! Congratulations on a great race and enjoy every second of the aftermath. PS: Now I’m dreaming of a toasted sesame bagel with butter!

Reply

Congrats Janae. This is so wonderful and I love your positive spirit. So beautiful. I want to run this one really bad…maybe next year. :)

Reply

Way to go!! I am so proud of you and love your positive energy!!

Reply

You are so inspiring! I loved reading every word of this. The pictures are beautiful. I hope I get to run this race one day, it’s one of my dreams. Who knew the secret was plain bagels?! My stomach gets really upset with peanut butter pre-run so I’m totally going to try just plain bagels next round of training.

Reply

Congratulations AGAIN !!! I tracked you the whole time, and I was whooping in front of the computer so much that my husband had to see what was going on…. and then he joined me. :) I am so proud of you for setting out and doing exactly the race you wanted to do. I have to say, I was a little nervous that you might get caught up in the energy and just gun it, and hurt yourself. It amazes me that you can keep such a steady pace, especially since you are mostly a treadmill runner. When I get onto the road after spending a lot of time on the treadmill, my pace is all over. It also amazes me that your “easy” finish time is my “dream” finish time. :) Speedy, speedy girl! So very happy for you!!!!

Reply

Congratulations! I was watching the race online and thinking of you out there running. What a great race and it sounds like you enjoyed every moment.

Reply

God youre AMAZING- 3.36 just off of injury? If Im ever half as awesome I want a prize just for being.

I tracked you… suck a blog suck up over here!

I had my name on my shirt the times I ran for charity- its really nice to hear people yell just for you and know youre making a difference :)

I dont actually really like any bagels but plain wholewheat. But I agree that PB isnt as awesome on race day tum as everyone wants it to be :(

Reply

First obsessed with the yellow pants..it’s a good thing I don’t have a pair or I’d live in them. The bagel pic with hot chocolate..I hope you dipped the bagel in it! YUM.

Use to do a lot of sesame bagels or plain with either veggie or strawberry cream cheese. Not much of a bagel lover now–got burnt out after eating like 3 a day. Now if ever..multi-grain or cinnamin raison with melted cheese.

You accomplished so many goals..the positive one is that best.

Reply

How cool that you got to run the entire marathon with SR!!!
I cannot believe you finished a marathon in 3:36 with barely any training. That has to be a huge confidence booster!
You have so much running talent, congrats on a great race!

Reply

You are just amazing to me period. Looks like you really had a good time out there! You are incredibly talented! I hope to run NYC someday too!

Reply

You are amazing!!! Definitely my inspiration!! For being a no pressure run you rocked it:D!! NYC is definitely on my wish list that would be amazing ! Congrats again!!!!

Reply

I am so excited for you! The most congrats, pretty girl!!

Reply

Janae!!! ahh so happy to have met you and i saw you run and i cheered and you saw me i felt so honored haha…i was at mile 17 and i doubt you could hear cuz by the time you came along it was just thousands of people for miles and miles but its the place to be bc of z100 (its the number one nyc radio station) and the awesome music it plays!

my favorite bagel has to be either everything bagel, poppyseed or seasameseed bagels and with vegetable cream cheese…but it has to be the right place…there is a place in herald square i think it was called bagel place (so original) but it had the BEST vegetable cream cheese and i have yet to find another place that compares :-(

trying to run NYC next year but if not then 2013 ive got my ticket!! hope to see you in march for red rock!!

Reply

Awesome recap!! I dream of running NYC one day, it sounds like such an amazing race!

My favorite bagel is cinnamon raisin with pb. Can’t beat that combo!

Reply

Never ran NYCM. I would definitely put it on my bucket list. I like whole wheat bagels. My signature pose is having my name on my butt with duck tape. There is so many colors of duck tape. I love matching the duck tape to my outfit.
Never done two race in a weekend.
Way to go Janea. You did amazing girl.

Reply

I’m so excited for you girl!!! You rocked it!!

Reply

You did awesome!! Congrats!!

Reply

AWESOME recap, this was really well done and your pics are impressive for running such a quick race :)

Glad you enjoyed and cherish that finish :)

So proud of you and glad it was such an incredible experience for you! What fun to have something to run with the whole time. I love that. I’m sure you’re tired and getting back into the swing of things at home. Rest up, buttercup! xoxo
