NYC Marathon Goals…..

We made it!! I officially watched 5 hours of friends (you know, to prepare me for being in NYC), read a few running Running Times magazines, drank 3 sprites and ate 8 bags of peanuts.

Remember that sandwich from my last post?  Well, I am pretty sure it is the best sandwich I have ever eaten and will be scheduling all of my future flights around airports that contain a Potbelly’s.  I had the turkey and mozarella sandwich but I will be trying every sandwich on their menu within the next year.  Setting my sights high.

Photo copy 3

Is it weird that I had a lot of fun in the taxi…..I was a little excited.

I have a very very big goal for the NYC Marathon….

Sub 3 baby.

Utah Valley Marathon 37

Okay, that is a complete lie but I will sub 3 within the next year, I am not in the shape to run that this weekend…..training for 6 weeks or so probably isn’t enough time for a pr plus I NEED to play things smart/safe so that I don’t re-injure myself.

I do have a lofty goal that I made last Saturday…..

During my half marathon last Saturday I kept comparing myself to my pre-injury times.  I had a 1 hour 39 minute mental battle with myself.  I couldn’t believe how a 8 minute mile felt like a 6 minute mile.  I was really hard on myself because I have lost so much fitness.

BUT GUESS WHAT, I am doing my favorite thing again (pain free) and I need to focus on the happiness that running gives me rather than my splits.

So my goal for Sunday……NO COMPARING where I am in terms of running to my old self.  I want to enjoy the fact that I am running again and put tape over my garmin so I don’t tempt myself to go out too fast.  Heck, I will be running one of the most awesome marathons in the world….I will be on cloud nine and soak up every second.

Be prepared for at least 400 pictures along the course….You can’t say I didn’t warn you.

——————————

There is another blogger/reader/internet bff meet-up on SUNDAY with SkinnyRunner after the marathon.  2:30 @ CRUMBS (the best cupcakes ever).  PLEASE COME IF YOU CAN!!

1675 Broadway (53rd)
New York, NY 10019

—————————–

When was the last time that you had a mental battle with yourself while running? How did you over come it?

What are you having for bfast today?

-I don’t know yet but as I am typing this at 1 a.m. it is all I can think about.

What is YOUR GOAL for your next race?

PS Thank you so much for all of your sweet emails/comments/good lucks etc.  You guys mean the world to me and I am so thankful for my internet bffs!!!

Good Luck, Janae! I wish you all the best for your marathon! Go, rock it (smoothly ;) ) .

Yea! I think your goal is excellent. NY is the greatest city and the whole cityturns out for the marathon!

My goals for Sunday are to finish in the time limit. In my head I know that won’t be an issue but since it’s my first marathon I won’t trust it till I can see the finish line. ;) I also want to high five some people and have as much fun as I can. I have a time goal but I’m trying not to get to caught up in it!!

Reply

Also, you need to have a NY bagel for breakfast. I informed my brother as soon as I got off the plane today that we needed to go to the expo via Brooklyn so I could get a bagel!!

Reply

Ah I just LOVE your optimism…you are going to nail that marathon girl! And I hope you had a carbilicious breakfast! I found a waffle maker at home yesterday…my kitchen is a goldmine, I tell ya! Naturally breakfast had to involve waffles…topped with peanut butter and banana slices..and a few choc chips because you know, it’s Friday :)

You go girl!!!

Mental battles ? Daily LOL my brain is always getting in my way!

Breakfast today is a protein shake (banana, greek style yogurt, water, protein powder, 3 frozen strawberries and a scope of someother recovery drink) — today we lifted heavy – gotta repair some muscles!

Reply

I always set my Garmin 405 to miles only. I know how far, but not how fast I’m going. And don’t forget to start your watch at the start line and not when the gun goes off.

Reply

Eh, you’re such an amazing runner I actually believed that sub-3 was your time goal until you said that you were kidding.

I always have mental battles with myeslf while I’m running, particularly in the first half of any race. Just mentally shouting ‘shut the hell up’ repeatedly to my brain seems to help ;)

You’ll be brilliant, no matter what your time (and I’ll bet your ‘slow’ time is faster than my PR from last weekend).

GOOD LUCK! You will be amazing no matter what! Can’t wait to see pics.

P.S. Did you try Potbelly’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie? I live for them!

Reply

I fully support your Potbelly’s decision. Something tells me you’d really like their “pizza sandwich” ;) My favorite is the mushroom cheese melt, but its technically one of their low-carb options so you have to ask for normal bread. And they have multi-grain bread too! win! Oh and they serve breakfast!! Ok I’m done talking about Potbelly’s now haha.

I also think your new goal is really important! Your future self (the one that’s going to run sub-3 and qualify for the olympic trials) is going to thank you for keeping your current self healthy and injury free – and hey…you ARE running the most awesome marathon in the world! I know I’d give anything to be able to run NYC right now! Maybe I should make the little drive over the river and cheer haha. But yes, def don’t compare. you could even leave the garmin at home! And don’t worry, your fitness is gonna come back way faster than you think it is :) so have fun and use the time to soak up the atmosphere at the best marathon in the world! and when you run it next year, you’ll already have taken all the pictures and seen all the sights so you can just blaze through it haha.

Today I’m taking a rest day so I’m actually going to take the time to cook breakfast…I’m thinking sweet potato pancakes and/or muffins and a smoothie!!

Janae! I am so excited for you &I love your goal! :)

I am SO SO SO excited for you to run this marathon!! I can’t wait to hear all about it!!!!! Also, there are Potbelly’s in Minnesota – just another reason to come visit!!!!

Reply

Good Luck!! Can’t wait to read all about it. I ran my first marathon 3 weeks ago and the last 4 miles were a mental work out. Just keep running, knowing you are strong and can finish. Music also helps alot.
Breakfast crumpets with strawberry jam.
Next race is a Turkey Trot with my sister, I just want to enjoy it.

Reply

Good luck lady! You’re going to do awesome!!

Reply

So excited for you. I hope to be where you are one day! My run was tough yesterday (i’m just starting again) and I too had to remind myself of the fact that i’m doing this because i love running, not to beat any record!

Reply

Isn’t Potbelly’s amazing? My favorite sandwich place by far… I love their bread. I ate there on Tuesday for lunch… yum!

Good luck this weekend!! Enjoy the race for what it is and when you are tempted to run (too) fast or check your Garmin just think “I am running and that is good enough for now!” Always time for a PR down the road. You are awesome and an inspiration!

Reply

This is certainly a wonderful goal to have…comparing is never a beneficial idea! Good luck :D

Reply

So excited for you! Good luck!!!

Hardest running mental challenge? Shin splints right when I first started running. Still a slow battle and have had to limit most running to the indoors but positivity is a must :) Hardest physical mental challenge? Was a dancer for 10 years and stopped because of a bad back (due to dance of course). Every time I go back to the studio I can’t help but beat myself up!
Breakfast? English muffin with pb and honey and banana! Yum!!

Reply

Good luck! I’m pretty sure you’re going to crush NYC. The crowd will give you so much energy.
Whenever I get frustrated with myself I try to remember how luck I am to be running at all

Reply

You are going to have so much fun!!! I am so excited for you and a little jealous! Enjoy every minute of NYC!!! Who cares your time? All your BFF’s know you are fast!!! GO JANAE!!!

Reply

You’re going to kick some marathon butt, girl!!! You’re ready and you’re going to crush it!!! With regard to times and goals, I’m in a similar situation – I’m running my first marathon in over 3 years after a DNF in my last one because of a knee injury and I am NOT in the same shape I was 3 years ago…but I’m psyched just to be able to do it again :)

Reply

While in NYC, you should go to Serendipty’s and have a frozen hot chocolate. Jealous of all the great food choices you will have this weekend. Enjoy yourself!

Reply

Mental battle was for a 4 mile race, and I got sick half way through and couldn’t get going after that so I dropped out. I knew I could run those 4 miles, I have and did plenty of times before but that was just the worse time in my races.

Breakfast is odwalla mixed berry shuffle smoothie drink (about to go out for a run, gotta have a light stomach)

GOOD LUCK ON THE RACE!!!

Reply

Good Luck and enjoy the race! :) Can’t wait for all of the pictures too.

Reply

Go JANAE, GO!! You can do it! :)

Reply

Good luck in NYC, I for one can’t wait for all the pictures!

I just had kashi for breakfast (I was in a rush)!

I have mental battles all the time about speed and strength after my injury, you just need to step back and realize you will get back to that level one day at a time! :)

Reply

Good Luck!! You might compare yourself to before and be disappointed but I was telling my husband that I read about people who can run like an 8 minute mile for miles and miles (I won’t even embarrass myself by telling you my current pace or longest distance). I was like, “These girls can run like an 8 minute mile!” The hubs was like, “Yeah, but Marla, these are like superstar athletes.” So, just so you know, you are a superstar athlete in my book! :-)

Enjoy NYC!!!

Reply

I had a mental battle with myself last night! lol I pushed myself and it was uncomfortable. I just told myself to keep going.
Bagel for me for breakfast this morning!
NY bagels are the best!! Hope you try one while you’re in town.
My goal for my next race is just to do the best I can. I would like to PR, but I am not going to beat myself up if I don’t.
Have a great day today!! Can’t wait for pictures!! :) xo

My breakfast will be a chocolate/banana/peanut butter protein shake. It’s cold so I have to bundle up to drink it!

Your going to do great you have such a natural talent for running, and NYC is such a gorgeous place. Take it all in!

I am so excited for you! I’m hoping to run the NYC Marathon next year- as I’m a life-long NY’er I feel it only fitting to have it on my list of to-do’s!

I will try to make it to Crumbs on Sunday! It would be so wonderful to meet some long-distance blog lovers!

GET IT, GIRL! And holla at me if you need suggestions of things to eat or if you get lost.

Reply

Shredded wheat, milk, and a pear..generic breakfast.

I always just tell myself I am lucky I have legs if I have a mental running issue..

GOODLUCK and you’ll need more luck picking out your fro-yo concoction than in your actual race….too many flavors to choose from–red velvet, carrot cake, apple pie, birthday cake, peanut butter confession, gingerbead man..

Reply

So what pace are you planning to run? Are you just going to run steady 8s and expect a 3:30? Faster? Slower?

Reply

My breakfast this morning was a giant bowl of cereal. It was delicious, but rushed because I let myself sleep in. Oops.

You are going to have so much fun this weekend! Just enjoy the race and it’ll be as awesome as you are!

Reply

The mental battle is actually my biggest challenge. What has really helped is to remove the “instant pace” field from my Garmin. When I would see that my “instant pace” wasn’t exactly what it should have been, I would get so angry at myself. If any one mile wasn’t right, I’d get caught up in a vicious mental cycle about how I couldn’t do it, wasn’t fast enough, would never PR etc. Lame. So this fall, I removed the field and ran by FEEL. It changed everything. I rocked a half and a 10k. I’m making a real PR attempt on 11/12 for the half…and I soooo want to qualify for NYC. Sub-1:37? Can I do it? Can you come pace me? ;)

Reply

Good luck girl! Can’t wait to see pics! Have fun!

Reply

good luck in NYC! don’t judge yourself during the race. just try and enjoy being in NYC with a bunch of other people who are in pure bliss as you are.

Reply

Excited for you this weekend! And post as many details and photos as you dare… most of us (me, especially) love the fact that someone else can talk about the greatness of running and love it as much as you do!

Reply

I totally believe the sub 3 goal too! You are going to do awesome. I know a few people that have run the NYC Marathon and you cannot go into expecting a PR. Even if you were training for more than six weeks. You do it for the experience. You are going to rock the marathon, really.

Breakfast: Greek yogurt with Better ‘n Peanut Butter
Running Goal: I haven’t run a marathon and it’s really not a plan of mine, but I have run three half-marathons. I would like to do a sub 2 hour half marathon before I am 40. I have a year and a half to do it. Yes, I am probably the oldest person that reads your blog.

I will be at 16 handles tomorrow at 1pm. I’m hoping I don’t feel too old! I’d really like to go in on Sunday to watch so if anyone would like to meet, let me know!

Reply

Chrissy,
You are not the oldest person reading Janae’s blog, as I am already 40. Wish I was in NY, I’d come make sure you aren’t the oldest person at 16 Handles!

Reply

Good luck! Can’t wait to hear all about it!

Reply

GOOD LUCK! I cant wait to hear about it! and for breakfast I just had the fitnessitsa cookie dough cereal, and it was delishhhh

I talked to mother nature personally and made sure the weather was perfect for your visit and big race in NYC!

Ack! My post didn’t appear. Well, believe me when I say it was the most well written post ever (yeah, right).

Ok, you are awesome and you are going to do an awesome job on Sunday. I am so excited for you. I have known a few people that have run the NYC marathon and one thing they always say: you don’t do it for a PR, you do it for the experience. Even if you had more than six weeks to train…you are going to be running with 47,000 runners.
BTW- I will be at 16 Handles on Saturday. I’ll be the old woman so you will spot me immediately. Ok, not old woman, but the oldest one there.

Breakfast: Greek yogurt and Better ‘n Peanut Butter
Next race goal: Run a sub 2 half-marathon before I am 40. I have a year and half to do that.

PS- I would love to come in the city to watch the marathon so if anyone wants to meet up…(I live in New Jersey)

Reply

Go girl!!! Your going to be amazing!!

Reply

Hey Janae! I wish I could meet up with you and the other bloggers on Saturday but I have plans :( Either way GOOD LUCK and I know you’ll KICK BUTT and have a blast!

Btw– My sister used to live in Chicago and we’d go to PotBelly’s all the time. We were talking about it how we both missed it since she’s moved back to NY. Luckily they just opened a PotBelly’s location in NY if you’re looking to bring a snack with you on the plane. The one I know of is by 44th and Lex, but I hear there’s one downtown!

As for your prior recommendations of places to go in NYC on a budget, I’d probably just eat at food trucks. Carmines is good if you’re with a group as is Dinasour BBQ. Max Brenner is a novelty place. There are so many good places! I’d def try to go to Ktown (Food Gallery 32), Chinatown (Delicious Crab and Pork Soup Dumplings and Dimsum), Ippudo or Minka for Ramen/Japanese food (carb and salt, right?) Also I’d say have a nice brunch tomorrow in the village, soho or downtown!

If you want candy, I’ll suggest Dylan’s Candy Bar (60th and 3rd) It’s owned by Ralph Laurens Daughter and it’s 3 floors of candy and all things sweet!

For Soft Serve I’d try Milk Bar Cereal Milk Softserve (East Village) , Lula’s Apothecary (E.Village) , Jaques Torres (S.Village) , RonnyBrook Farms (Chelsea) or La Maison du Chocolate (Midtown and UES)

Reply

You’ll do great Janae!

I used to compare myself to Jason all the time — he is naturally a very fast runner and it frustrated me that I “had to work harder” to run and it came naturally to him. With time I realized how silly this is! I need to go at my own pace and guess what — now we can run together because I caught up to him!

Reply

I am in a mental battle with myself right now because 2 co-workers asked me to run a half this weekend. I ran a half last weekend with the hubby, as he organized the whole weekend away……so I said no. Now that they are talking about it today at school……….ugggggg it’s bothering me…….should I have just done both?? I keep reminding myself of that quote I read from your shirt “the spirit is willing but the body says no”
How do I get over it??? Tell myself the truth. Let that voice ring louder in my head than the other one!

Reply

YOU ARE GOING TO DO AMAZING and I NOT be surprised if you got close to that first goal of sub 3. For real. You are a rock star!

Reply

i’m so excited to read the posts over the weekend about your marathon…seriously, it’s gonna be fun just to run it and not worry about your pacing. This is definitely one of the BEST experiences you will ever have…so cherish it :) I’ve only heard amazing things about running NYC and I hope I get to do it myself in the near future..

that being said, i am having strawberry frosted wheat for bfast yum!

i dont have any races lined up but i’m gonna start thinking about it soon…i’m sure when I sign up for a marathon I will have a half marathon mixed in there as a training run…honestly, i just want to finish a marathon, i’m not super worried about the timing. finishing would just be my biggest worry ;)

p.s. crumbs = excellent choice, such good cupcakes!

Reply

Ah, I am excited for your picture-filled recap! If I ever end up running a marathon, NYC would be the one I would want to do! That course would be so interesting, I’d probably forget that I was running.
You will be awesome!

My current racing goal is just to run in a 10k. I have only ever ran in 5k’s and I want to step it up. I’ll probably set more of a time goal as the race gets closer :)

Reply

new goal: who can take more pictures during the race, you or i

Reply

I know that sub 3 is in your future very very soon! I can’t wait to hear about your awesome recap of the race and post race eats.

Most of my mental battles occur when I’m doing my long runs alone. I find myself pretty annoying, so spending that my time with myself creates great turmoil.

I had a pb and banana sandwich for bfast. Dang delicious.

I’m running a half 2 weeks and another in December. Honestly neither of those are goal races. My sights are set on a Spring HM PR.

Reply

Hope you enjoy every minute of this, and ROCK New York City! Good luck doll!

That’s a great goal Janae! You’re going to do awesome and the marathon is the best way to see all of NYC : )

Good luck Janae!!

good luck for the race!
mentally i usually just tell myself that i’ve done it before so obviously i can do it again. if i’m really struggling i talk to myself in my head about anything and everything aside from what i’m doing.
this mornings breakfast was a mug of black coffee….. so healthy, i know ;)
again, good luck & enjoy!

no matter what time the garmin says, i think you are still awesome. that sub 3 is in those legs, and just like all great things in life…it’ll be worth the wait.

After having a really hard pregnancy, complicated labor and the worse recovery known to womankind I really had to work to get back into running. I’m still not as fast as I was (with a 19 month old) but I am finally happy t be running and that’s what I need. I may never be a fast runner but as long as I can run I’m not going to complain. You can do this marathon. Maybe don’t even wear the garmin?? Just have a blast and remember this isn’t the last race you will run. Were cheering for you!

Wow Kendra! You are incredible! Great idea and I am so happy you are running pain free!!!!

I am so excited for you. I love Friends and watch it when I run on the treadmill. People give me the strangest looks since I’m always laughing while running.

I would be excited for the cab ride, too! I’ve never ridden in one before, so I think it’d be darn interesting.

And my current running battle is right now. I’m somewhat in the same boat as you, as my times are slower this year compared to last year, and I’ve been dealing with injury. I so badly want to PR on Sunday, but I know chances are incredibly slim that I will be able to. I’m also terrified that my knee will start hurting early on in the race and I’ll either have to drop out or hobble to the end. I need to just focus on having a fun run, but darnit! I’m so competitive against myself!

Reply

Have a great time Janae!!!! I have been following your blog for awhile now, and it is sooo great to see you back running a marathon!!!!!

Yayy!! good luck girl! You will for sure sub3 one day but I would say take the time to enjoy every second of this race bc no matter what you’ll do great!! Take pics of the cupcakes too :)

My pace really started slowing down a few weeks ago and I was getting frustrated because I felt like I was completely running out of gas all the time. Then I found out I was pregnant and it made sense, but I still find myself comparing my current running pace to my pre-pregnancy one. I know I’ll probably continue to slow down, but it’s just hard to see it happen!

So glad you made it safely! Your goals are perfect and more than anything I am just so thankful you are able to run this. You deserve this race and you have earned it. Have SO MUCH FUN!!

When I read that you wanted to go sub 3, my heart sank! I was thinking- Oh no, Janae!!! Don’t hurt yourself!!!! You got me good. I have no doubt that a sub 3 is in the very near future for you.

PLEASE take a lot of pictures.

You have a Garmin 305, so just change the main screen. You can change it so the only thing it shows is the distance- 1 item on the screen. That would keep you from beating yourself up as you realize you are running a freaking MARATHON. Go rock it, girl!

GOOD LUCK SATURDAY!!!! I’ll be thinking of you :)

Yay, you made it!!! Rooting for you this weekend friend!! You are going to have so much fun. I cannot wait for PICS!!!

Seriously, on my 6 mile run this morning 7:50 miles felt like 6:00 min miles. Why? I felt like I lost all of my fitness. I don’t know what my deal is but I have had a very hard time since getting back from Maui. Just feeling tired in general- I think a lot of it is the stress of my job. One thing that is fo sho I am taking a few days off before Vegas so I can relax!

Goal for Vegas? Dare I say PR?!?! Shooting for 3:30ish. Ack, I can’t believe I just let that out!

Potbelly is SOOOO good! When I used to eat meat I would devour one of those turkey sandwiches in MINUTES and I always wanted another one. They’re AMAZING.

I am so pumped for you… I will be thinking about you and all of the others running this weekend. I have to do the same thing… NOT compare myself to my former, pre-injured self. I just started running again, and very slowly. I am sad about the fitness I’ve lost but it’s OK. I will get it back and so will you. Either way, you’re going to do great! There is no doubt in my mind. Enjoy NYC and have fun in the race. Can’t wait to see a bazillion pictures!!

SO excited for you and I’m sure you’re going to be fantastic! I just wrote a post about how even just admitting to a marathon as a real GOAL has been huge for me…but I’ve committed to it, and I WILL meet my goals! :)

I can’t wait to hear all about it!

I have a 10 mile race next saturday (my furthest distance ever!) and my goals are 1. HAVE FUN, 2. Don’t freak out about time, I’m there for goal #1: FUN, 3. perhaps run it at a pace of under a 9 min mile. I’m sure I can, I just don’t want to push myself too hard or not feel bad if I don’t make it. Again – FOR FUN! Haha can you tell I have a self-competitive issue that I’m trying to get rid of?

Best wishes, Janae!!! No matter what your time is, be proud of your amazing accomplishment! Not many people in this world can say that they’ve finished a marathon … let alone the number that you’ve completed! :)

Can’t wait to see pictures!

I hope you had a BAGEL for breakfast – you’re in NYC after all!!

I’ll try to be at the 2:30 cupcake meetup! That’s actually only like 5 blocks from the hotel I’m staying at on Sunday, so that might work :)

Don’t worry about your fittness level, I read in a magazine that age 25 is your peak fitness time, so you should have a great year coming up!! (ok I think you said you were 24, hope I’m not wrong…. although you don’t look a day bast 23…)

I am running my 3rd half marathon next weekend and I would like to beat my time from the 2nd half marathon which was just two weeks ago lol So I am looking to beat 2 hours and 24 minutes. Hopefully I can do it!
You are going to do great this weekend!

best of luck girl! you’re gonna rock it, and its all about the experience…enjoy every second, no matter what pace : )
potbelly’s is amazing! when i lived in chicago and flew out of midway, i always stopped there for breakfast or lunch or dinner…so good.
i had banana oatmeal w/ tons of PB…my workday breakfast every day.
last mental battle was wed…my legs were aching, my head was totally in the game though, so it was more about not injuring myself than pushing myself. had to remember that i want to run in the future, not be sidelined.

Good luck this weekend! I have no doubt that you’ll do awesome. You’ll get a sub 3 hour marathon soon, and it will feel sweeter because you will be totally healthy and ready :)

OMG I’ve been so out of the loop but I just saw this whole Crumbs meet up and I totally think I’m gonna be there!!!!!! Good luck! And hopefully I get to see you and SR and whoevaa else on Sunday :D

Good luck!! Can’t wait to hear how the marathon goes!

Lately, many of my after-school running experiences have been a bit of a mental battle. Exhausted these days!

I want to run my first half in less than 2:15. Nothing compared to a sub-3 marathon, but I’ll be happy. :)
