Just let me vent for a few minutes okay? Thanks.

The past week I have woken up every night with the worst tooth ache in the whole wide world.  I have been able to accomplish watching Mean Girls 12 times on my phone during the middle of the night due to not being able to sleep.  Ibuprofen became my best friend.

I was finally able to get an appointment with my dentist (PS he is my favorite dentist ever) but he had an emergency so I had to have a substitute.

Photo 1

I am crazy sauce and as soon as I found out that I was going to have a different dentist I started shaking, no joke, I don’t like people I don’t know drilling away my enamel and playing around with my nerve endings.  Remember my MOUTH SURGERY in February…..well, turns out that it caused some major complications and now I need a root canal.

Today was part one (during my prep and lunch break) of the root canal process……they didn’t even give me laughing gas….who does that?

At least they had a tv on the ceiling and they didn’t even ask why I was taking a picture of the ceiling while watching, ‘What I Like About You.’  Probably the worst photo in HRG history.

Photo 2

And the lamesauciest part of it, I forgot to pack a lunch that I could eat with a hurting/numbified mouth…….so I am stuck to sucking on peaches.  I am hungry!

End of venting and I better be able to sleep tonight.

Okay, so I have been teaching my cross-country kids that whatever you think about you bring about…..time to focus on the positive:)

#1 Positive: The WINNERS of the the Compression Shorts from ASPAERIS.  Not one but TWO winners…thanks Aspaeris for hooking my bff’s up!  (Email me your address and size wahoo)

I am actually applying to dental school right now but even I HATE being the one in the dental chair. But laughing gas is the best!!! Next time just throw a temper tantrum until they give it to you – from my personal experience it totally works.

ps. do i spy a bag of sour patch kids in the background of your picture? they are my FAVORITE candy!!

You should get a tomato soup! Tomato basil or cream of tomato!
Those always seem the best…although lentil soup or minestrone soup is fantastic too!

Something positive about my day…I got to add the class I wanted AND my dad is a bit more alert and awake today (hes in the hospital very very sick )

Oh and I love my dentist! I’ve known him since I was weeks old!

Reply

Haven’t been to the dentist since I graduated… oops? It’s on my to-do list… I just hate going so much :(

you should get a fabulous tomato bisque!!!!!! It’s my fav.. with a fresh French baguette to dip of course. Broccoli Cheese is good too but I’m very picky it has to actually resemble florets of broccoli… so I believe it’s fresh and wasn’t made 3.74 years ago and canned and saved until you just nuked it for me 5min ago.

Then you should treat yourself to fro-yo or a huge chocolate shake.

Reply

I treat the Dentist the same way I treat the Eye Doc – if I need you I will call you or not. That’s why I need a root canal also :(

Reply

The dentist is the worst! I’ve had 3 root canals over the past few years and always cry after! :( Now I have to get a tooth pulled an replaced. (I swear I brush, I just had an awful childhood dentist who didn’t properly clean my cavities.)I hope you feel better!

Reply

I’m having a root canal tomorrow! I’ve had crazy pain for a month now and I’m so ready for it to be done! I hope you’re feeling better!

Reply

I love my dentist. He’s awesome. Of course he grew up with my husband so We blackmail him with old scout stories to give us good service.

I fell asleep during my last root canal. No joke. I also ran 13 miles the day after getting my wisdom teeth out, so I guess dentist stuff just doesn’t bother me.

Reply

I am like you! I put things off for too long hence a 10 pm visit to instacare to get a hole put in my leg… No running for three weeks, bleh

Reply

Oh no! I am so sad for you and your mouth now :( My dad went to the dentist today too and turns out he has major nerve damage in a tooth from a bike accident he had 30 years ago! I will tell you that I am so excited that you watched What I Like About You. For some crazy reason, I put that show on EVERY MORNING at 6am when I’m getting ready for work. Every. Single. Morning.

Should I be embarrassed that I just admitted that?!

Reply

girl some tomato soup sounds SO GOOD. i’m so sorry you had to get a root canal, but you sound ok (even coaching xcountry tonight?!) so it sounds like you’re doing fine. :) and i don’t wanna talk about the dentist… remember my post about my CHIPPED TOOTH? ha.

Reply

You commenting on my blog was a big positive in my day!
I agree with the others. Tomato basil soup sounds delish! : )
I don’t like going to the dentist. I hope you’re not in too much pain. Just a good excuse to eat more ice cream. Because A) You can’t chew and B) The cold will numb the pain. Oh and C) Because you need more calcium. ; )
Thank you (and Aspaeris) times a million for the shorts! xo

Reply

Gahh I am sorry for all of that pain you are experiencing! But think about how great it will feel after all of it is over! I have had a root canal before and it err sucks! I kept feeling them working in my mouth so I ended up getting about 20 shots of novocaine. It’s safe to say I couldn’t move my mouth for about 4 hours after that. But no pain anymore… what a relief because it used to feel like someone was sticking a cold needle into my gum… lovely!
Good luck on the procedure, it’s going to be just fine pretty lady :)

Reply

I freak out a little when it comes to teeth work too. I don’t have any dentist I’m comfortable with. Sucks you had to be in pain so long.

Reply

I have the worst anxiety when I go to the dentist. Like I end up all sweaty by the end of the visit even on just a cleaning haha. I have to get that same mouth surgery done (sometime) that you had. Its my second time having to do a gum graft and I am dreading it, its horrible!

Reply

if i have even just a check up looming on my calendar, id usually rather suffer my tooth falling out than making the appt. i HATE the dentist. good thing is though, its usually not as bad as i hype it up to be in my head, and once you DO finally show up, if youre lucky you can wait another whole 6 months before needing to return!
im in denial that summer is on its way out, so id recommend some cold soups! but if youre in the mood for hot on this rainy day, cant go wrong with plain ol tomato or split pea (im serious, i thought it sounded gross my whole life, but its actually deliciousss. esp home cooked, in a crock pot)!

Reply

OMG I hate the dentist. I have a great dentist, but there’s just something awful about a drill in my teeth…the awful vibrations, crackling noises, high pitched screeching in my brain…cold water…ah! so scary.
And root canals are the worst!!! You can FEEL your roots coming out of your mouth! EWW.
You rock girl.

Reply

I absolutely hate the dentist. Hate them. {sorry dentists, I hate your work, not you personally..usually…} We are in a new state and went to a new dentist a few weeks ago. They were nice but I definitely should have yelp’ed them first…horrible reputation for over charging and being major alarmists I guess. Not cool.

Good luck with your root canal! :S

Reply

I luckily have no fear of the dentist, which is amazing, because I’m scared of everything. Anyway, most root canals do not require laughing gas…it should be a pretty routine procedure. I’ve had my fair share.

I think you should order lentil soup or split pea…something hearty!

Reply

I have the same problems with my gums too and have had the surgery you linked to. Without dental insurance, I had to go for the laughing gas as well. I still remember it as a pleasantly blurred experience.

Sorry that yours resulted in needing a root canal :(

Reply

Janae!! You poor girl!! toothaches are the WORST! And strange, new dentists are even worse! I’m so sorry. I hope your soup is yummy tonight.

Hmm, some positives from today, let’s see — I was very productive at work today and juggled several projects without stressing. I guess that’s a plus. And it’s a beautiful day and I am healthy and able to run — that’s ALWAYS a positive! :)

Reply

first of all… root canals are the LAMEST!!! :( I will be praying for you!!
I had to have a couple root canals done in 5th grade (long story) and the endodontist (spelling?) didn’t numb me or anything before he started drilling… it hurt so bad I was squeezing my moms hand (and my teddy bear so hard) that my mom knew something was up… last time we ever went to that guy…

I LOVE my regular dentist!! I’ve been going to him since I started going to the dentist (whenever that was lol)

Congrats to the compression shorts winners… not gonna lie, I’m a tad bit jealous ;)

Positiveness about my day… ran the most miles I’ve ever run in one day before ;) I’m kinda sore and tired now lol… just sayin ;)

Reply

I love my dentist. I’ve never had issues with any dentist, so I don’t have any anxiety about them. Now ask me about professional haircuts and I would react the same way you did when you found out you had a sub dentist. Yikes!

What’s positive about my day is that I can leave in 40 minutes to go home and hang out with my stepson. He always brightens my day!

Reply

Aww I’m sorry girl. I had a horrible dentist a few years ago who filled a cavity right next to my root. I was in pain for almost a year, before going to a new doctor who said I had to have a root canal. No fun, but very necessary!

My positive today is that it’s my birthday! So even though the weather is crummy and work was kinda stressful, it’s all good because I just enjoyed a Dairy Queen Blizzard. Because it’s my birthday and I can. ;)

Reply

Tomato basil soup (with some goldfish, they are still good soggy in soup)!

Reply

Chicken noodle or Chicken Enchilada soups –BOTH good :)

Hope your runners loved practice!

Reply

I like my dentist, he’s fine, whatever. But its my mother that’s in love with him! Don’t tell my father but she’s got a definete crush on him! Bahah its embarassing to even think about…..! Hee hee….. Ugh! Thankfully I’ve never had a root canal….

Reply

I had a root canal and it wasn’t as bad as I thought but I did drool everywhere, lol:) Not to make you too worried but the second part of the root canal was worse when they took out the temporary filling. Also do not chew gum until they give you that fake tooth thingy-I broke part of my tooth off doing so:(

Reply

Oh man, I’m sorry about your dentist experience!

I actually like the dentist…unless I’m concerned something is wrong. Like last time I went to the dentist, I thought I might have a cavity. I was anxious for that visit, mostly because I don’t have dental insurance and didn’t want to spend several hundred dollars on dental work. Never had a root canal…thinking about it makes me cringe.

Positive about my day: an amazing, heavenly, delicious slice of chocolate chip pumpkin bread from Great Harvest. I’m still dreaming about it after it’s long gone…

Reply

I have gone to the same dentist for my entire life, but then I moved to a new city and I couldn’t make time for a 2 hour drive every time I needed a cleaning. Last week I was having a little tooth ache and had no choice but to find a new dentist, who informed me that a filling needed replaced. When I went in a few days later for that procedure I was shaking SOOOO bad, especially when I learned I needed an additional Novocaine shot! Not fun!

Reply

Yuck! So sorry to hear about your root canal. Adam just had one done and it took three different parts. He is finally finished with the third part and doesn’t have to go back until his next cleaning. He lived off of Ibuprohen the first couple of days after. I’ve never had one and pray I never do. I like my dentist, but I still don’t like going. I think you should have either Baked Potatoe soup or Chicken Tortilla. Those are my favorite.

Reply

I LOVE MEAN GIRLS!!! Is butter a carb?

Reply

Your dentist as a tv on the ceiling??? That’s the coolest! I don’t really mind the dentist, but my old dentist was crazy smelly, so I switched. New guy is way better!

Reply

Panera Minestrone sans pesto or Panera Black Bean in a bread bowl are always satisfying. Olive Garden Minestrone is unlimited! Cambell’s Tomato with little animal crackers!

Positive about today is it’s hump dayyyy and almost the weekend! Apple picking seasonnn is here:)

Reply

I love my dentist. He is so awesome. I had to have a crown after I got my braces off about 3 years ago. I was so irritated that I had to spend money on a crown after I just paid thousands of dollars for my braces.
I bet you are the best CC coach.
Went to dinner with the hub and kids. Best black bean dip ever.

Reply

I like my dentist but I hate going to the dentist lol I had a scary moment awhile ago when I had a reaction to some anesthesia when I was getting a crown done, so the dentist office is definitely not my favorite place to go! lol

Reply

My dentist is ok. I don’t fear him. He is ex-navy. I seem to do well with ex-military men. My GP is ex-Air Force.

Positive of my day: Went to the gym twice. Ate pizza. Got a lot done.

Soup – Cream of just about anything.

The Kidless Kronicles
Wag More, Bark….

Reply

Aaack hate the dentist and am scared just thinking about it! I would go with tomato soup, my favorite!

Reply

Drilling with no laughing gas?! I would NOT be happy!! You have all the right to vent!
My mom is my hygentist and cleans my teeth so I just have her Dentist do whatever needs to be done on my teeth. I haven’t had anything in a while though which is good, I have never had a root canal, good luck with that!
A positive in my day is that I had a good workout and I would order black bean soup, butternut squash, or any veggie one!

Reply

I feel your pain! I have gone through soooo many toothaches, I had one so severe it turned into an infection and my whole neck and face swelled up. They had to cut my mouth open to drain out the fluid, worst experience ever! Once the pain is gone it makes you so much more thankful for peaceful nights of sleep with no stabbing pain.
Have fun at spinning girl!!

Reply

OH no!! hopefully the root canal goes ok! I heard those are painful, I’ve never really had a mouth issue except my wisdom teeth out (apparently as I was coming out of anesthesia I said, “can I go for my run now?”hahaa) – good luck!!

I think you should order Broccoli Cheddar soup. In a bread bowl, if possible, cuz then you can eat the mushy bread insides!!

Reply

I hate the dentist!! I would go to the gyno anyday before I go to the dentist. That being said, I have had a root canal and it was not a big deal. I have had cavities, and just general check-up that were worse than that…..SO no no worries.

Positive about my day is that I had 58 minutes between school and parent night tonight, and I went for a jog. Skipped the shower…..because you taught me to, and I have gotten 3 compliments on my hair tonight……hilarious.

Soup: the real question is was there bread to dip into it?

You can vent anytime. Love you girl!

Reply

Yeeek I am so sorry – root canals are not a happy way to spend the day!

I had an unfortunate accident through which I broke two teeth and killed the nerves in two others and looked really really pretty so I am well versed in oral surgery and eating soft foods – my friends actually made me some “graduates” pasta, you know, pasta for toddlers. Nooot as bad as you might think, though!

Good luck recovering dear!

Reply

Oh man, the dentist I’m okay with, but the doctor… I hate the doctor! And I really, really, REALLY need to go… should have gone, no joke, 2 months ago because of some sort of reaction I have on my finger that was caused by a ring and aggravated by the sanitizer at work (or at least, that’s what I think is going on…) but the last time I went to the doctor he made me SO MAD that I just never want to go back… Although I have to say I’m probably not too terrified of the dentist because I’ve never had anything bad happen there…

Best thing about the day, got to watch a movie with a friend.

And either butternut or broccoli cheese soup!

Reply

Oh no!!! I’m so sorry your mouth isn’t working with you. :( Make the billster make you a milkshake!

Reply

My mom’s my hygienist, so I’ve been conditioned over the years to LOVE going to the dentist!

Reply

All good advice given so far. Just add a coplue of things. When he is brushing his teeth make sure he brushes his gums thoroughly as well. It is important he does not use a worn toothbrush as that can do more harm than good. At first it will bleed qute a bit but if he persists that will stop. This should be in a matter of days. The other thing is. If he has a sweet tooth and like sugary snacks or confectionery, that gets plaque going quicker than anything, and it is best to cut it out certainly while the problem persists. Was this answer helpful?

Reply

Boo. I know teeth issues suck :( Get tomato soup with big cheesy croutons and let them melt and get all soft so you can eat them.

Reply

Yikes!!! Feel better soon!!! I have only had a couple of cavity filings and my wisdom teeth out, but I actually like going to my dentist. I love feeling how clean my teeth are when its over. I totally feel your pain about a new dentist. I refuse to find a new one now that I am in Iowa. I still see my dentist at home in Indiana, the same one I have had all of my life! He is kind and works slow and never makes anything too painful. He had better never retire!! I hope you sleep good tonight :)

Reply

I love all of your positivity! I’ve been in a terrible mood since I’m still sick – can’t exercise, feel super lethargic and major runny nose/sore throat. BUT! I switched my focus earlier and tried to think of all the things that I have to be thankful for…and then I got over my pity party! Ha. Love ya, Janae!

Reply

I love my dentist! My family has been seeing him for years, plus I went to school with his kids. Either way, I don’t mind going to the dentist. I don’t get why people are so freaked out by the dentist!

Reply

I LOVE the dentist. LOVE. I got really upset when my pediatric dentist said he would kick me out after high school graduation. I swear one day I will secretly make an appointment and go see him. I can pass for 16.

Funny side note…my dentist’s name was Dr. Bradberry, and he shared a practice with Dr. Diamond…Dr. Neil Diamond.

Reply

hi! okay i feel like a creep because i’ve been stalking your blog for a while now and feel like i know you but i’ve never commented because i’m too lazy. so i am finally commenting. your blog is great and i love reading about your fun life. thanks for keeping me entertained! :) oh and p.s. i DONT like the last dentist i went to (provo dental care). messed up my hubby’s mouth big time.

Reply

root canal?? gah!!!! sorry, that freaks me out! (ok didn’t that just make you feel better!!) seriously, hope your tooth lets you sleep tonight!
i LOVE my dentist and his office is right on the main floor of my condo building! they open up the hallway door for me in the winter so i don’t even have to go outside!
soup with seafood of some sort?! (i sound like dr seuss!)

Reply

aw, poor you! That must be painful! I almost had to get a root canal this past winter because I brush my teeth way too much and I brushed away all of the gums on one of my teeth so I had a nerve exposed. Everytime I ate/drank something hot or cold, I’d get zapped! Awesome.

Luckily, they sold me some fancy toothpaste that solved the problem and numbed my nerve. It should have anyways, that toothpaste was 39 dollars per tube!

Reply

i love my dentist however i still get nervous. i just had my first root canal last december and it was terrible. i wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. i used to work for my dentist for a few years. best part of my day was being able to update my blog. first time in months since i just popped a baby out, time has not been on my side. finally feeling like i have control of my life.

Reply

Hey Janae! This isn’t exactly related to your post today but have you ever had arch soreness after running? If so, what do you do? Roll your feet with a tennis ball? Ice??

Thanks!

Reply

YES!!! I roll them with a frozen golf ball and I also got some inserts for my shoes. Email me if you have more questions:)

Reply

My boyfriend played baseball in High School and got a pop-up ball to the mouth. It knocked four of his top front teeth down and pushed them back into his mouth. It was the most gruesome thing I’ve ever seen (don’t worry I legit have pictures). His teeth just hung in the middle of the roof of his mouth for about a day or two and then he had to get four root canals and braces put back on!

I love my dentist too. He went to the same undergraduate as me and I actually saw him at a concert I went to (although his sweet dentist salary got him tickets many rows closer than me).

Reply

OH MY GOODNESS!! That is the craziest/most painful story I have ever heard!! Poor guy. Ha, I love that you saw your dentist at a concert.

Reply

Oh girl, toothaches are the absolute worst. I, too, am a recent victim of a root canal. Hope you’re feeling better and able to get your sleep on!

Reply

Funny post!! I’m getting ready to run my first marathon in 3.5 weeks and I’m scared stiff!!! Could you do a post on what running a marathon is REALLY like and what I can do to prepare these last few weeks! You’re the BEST!

Reply

GREAT IDEA!!! YOU GOT IT…I am so excited for you! What marathon will you be doing?

Reply

You poor thing!! The idea of a root canal terrifies me, and one evil dentist told me I needed 3!!! I definitely got a 2nd opinion and sure enough, just had 3 cavities. Now we go to the same practice my husband went to as a child, the dentist is a new one, but I love her and her hygenist!

Reply

I love the dentist because I am a teeth FREAK. I love clean teeth and cannot talk to someone with horrible teeth. It sounds so pathetic (kinda is) but it’s just one of those obsessions.

Positive of today -> PUMPKIN COFFEE!

A creamy bean and vegetable soup!

Reply

I love your blog… wait… I am obsessed with it! Anyway, I only have 2 years left of school until I am a Dentist! It sucks that you have to have a root canal but most people say it is immediate relief especially if the toothache wakes you up at night and is always bothersome. Just ask for the laughing gas. I would totally give you it if you were my patient :) It is hard to imagine you being much more hilarious than you already are but I am sure the laughing gas would multiply it by at least 100.

Reply

WOW…Sarah, your comment absolutely made my day! Thank you so so much and I am stoked that you are going to be a dentist, will you be my dentist. Maybe I will record me on laughing gas tomorrow ha! Thanks again Sarah for brightening my day!

Reply

girl- i have had 2 root canals, a tooth extraction and a bridge put in.
all those times i have been awake just numbed.
it is not fun but just give it an extra excuse to eat smoothies, froyo and ice cream!!!

Reply

i’ve had two root canals in the past year. i brush my teeth i promise! it was the worst pain ever, i was ready to do anything to get it to stop. the root canal was completely welcome. i’m sorry you had that, and hope the root canal stops the pain. (a pack of frozen peas to the face helps)

Reply

ahh I would be nervous with a different dentist, I’ve gone to the same one my entire life. I had a root canal once and it wasn’t that bad because my dentist fixed the nerve so it wouldn’t be bothered at all and it was awesome (as awesome as a root canal can be…)

enjoy dinner with your gma!

Reply

Boo – root canals are no fun! I have had 2 of them (yes, weak teeth suck and are VERY expensive!). And to be honest, they weren’t as bad I had thought they would be. I told them I didn’t numb well so I got an extra shot and that part hurt worse than the actual procedure. I did take some Advil before the numbing stuff wore off and more later on. But I didn’t fill the prescription for vicodin since I didn’t need it. Truthfully, it was less painful than the horrible tooth pain before! I’m sure it will go very well!

Reply

Umm… yeah, I can totally understand dental woes. I’ve had three crowns, a root canal, and other fun stuff. Can TOTALLY relate on the toothaches! Hope you sleep perfectly tonight!

Reply

Thank you so much Karen, I really appreciate it!

Reply

Dentists appointments are the worst! I had 4 cavities drilled last year and it was such a bummer. My advice – Fro Yo! It helps with the pain and you don’t have to chew if you just fill it with soft toppings :)

Reply

DENTISTS are freaky!!!! I feel for you. I went in December and I am terrified of when my husband/family are going to force me to go again!

You should have black bean soup. I love that stuff at Panera!!

Today was positive because we had some awesome tacos + ice cream for dinner. Yummmmmy!

Reply

First, you’re ridiculous and I think you’re awesome for it. I hate the dentist too! I don’t even know how you have a favorite dentist!

A positive? I went sailing tonight and signed up for the Race for the Cure 5k this morning. Plus, I’ve already raised $290 just today. Awesome!

Soup? I would have gone for the Italian Wedding. Or Chicken Tortilla.

Dang, you are amazing! That is so exciting! What is Italian wedding soup?

It’s broth based with noodles and tiny tiny little sausage balls with delicious spices and veggies! It’s my favorite. You should try it!

WOW- this posts really HITS A NERVE -pun intended with me! I HATE the dentist, but I LOVE my dentist. I hate hate hate the dentist. My childhood dentist would drill before I was numb and therefore gave me serious dentist anxiety! I even cried when he told me I needed another filling! Luckily when I moved I found an awesome awesome dentist and have been pretty good ever since…but I still don’t love going!

And I love soup. All kinds, except lentil. It’s brown and weird.

Reply

Ahhh I am sorry about your tooth troubles! I dont mind the dentist because I’ve spent so much time there but I agree, I only want to see MY dentist!

I got a root canal when I was 10 because I fell on my face and knocked my front teeth out of the socket. It’s not that bad girl! But definitely ask for the gas.

I just recently got permanent crowns put on my front teeth and that was the craziest experience ever. I was in the chair for 4.5 hours.

Positive: Getting to hang out with my favorite book club ladies for a few hours last night! And I vote for tomato soup!! :)

Congrats to the winners!!! LUCKY!!!

Sorry about your dentist visit :( I LOOOOATHE the dentise. I am ashamed to admit that I broke two filling waaaaay back about 8 years ago & NEVER went back. I had a horrible filling experience back then (mouth wouldn’t numb) and just never returned.

Well last December I finally went & ended up having to have TWO root canals & crowns – um yeah, they had to put me under for those :\ And guess what??? One has broken!!!! Ru serious? Yeah I’m putting it off….

I want to be a dentist too then please all of you pray for me.
If I become a dentist I’ll treat all of you without asking for money for 3 times.I promise!Of course if you come to me!Take care!!!
