Remember how I couldn’t look behind me or drink my watterbottle while I rode my bike….not anymore, I mastered BOTH skills throughout my century yesterday.
Let’s start from the start. I woke up grumpy. It was rainy and cold outside and I had no desire to workout for the next rest of my life, by myself (Billy had his LSAT class so he couldn’t come) and in the cold and wind.
I ate two bowls of Frosted Flakes and a PB sandwich and drove down to the start. I had bike problems at the starting line, I was shivering and we ALL went the wrong way for the first two miles up a CRAZY hill that made my heart cry. And then my eyes cried a little, I know, I am such a girl.
I decided that moment that I needed to make the BEST of the situation whether or not the wind was trying to ruin my life.
I started talking to people around me and tried to learn everything I could from different veterans that I rode with. By mile 15 I found my groove and my whole attitude changed.
I loved every single moment.
Especially the food part obviously;) Laffy Taffy’s > than chomps/shot blocks because they taste a trillion times better and the jokes on the back are awesome.
The best ‘trail mix’ I have ever made.I know I don’t normally drink SODA (especially pepsi/coke due to my previous ADDICTION) but that Pepsi has NEVER tasted so good.
There was also pretzels galore, fruit by the handfulls and cookies that were consumed. While running I never get really hungry but I couldn’t believe how hungry cycling made me especially becuase of all the effort I was putting into digging through the wind (drafting scares me).
The scenery was TO DIE FOR. I couldn’t believe it. Our world is incredible.
Note to self: When your aunt tells you it is a flat course, do not believe her. Yes, there was a lot of flat areas but at least 8 crazy hills with people walking their bikes up them.
I did end up with a flat tire that took FOREVER to change at mile 80 because I forgot to bring a spare tube (not the best thing to forget) and I did spend about 15 minutes total at lunch and the other aid stations but I was on the bike for about 5 hours and 56 minutes.
Awful form, I know but my back was getting tired and was having a hard time holding my head up.
I took my favorite beta alanine before the ride and my leg muscles never felt fatigued…..a combination of the beta alanine (prevents hydrogen buildup) and being too busy having fun = no muscles screaming.
And I finished!
Animals within 4 feet of me during the ride.
1. Rattle snake. 3 feet long. Not being dramatic here, everyone was freaking out about it.
2. 5,000 grasshoppers and I only accidently ran over 3,000 of them.
3. Baby goats, the cutest things I have ever seen.
4. Cows. Way too many of them and they stunk SO bad but at least it helped me SPRINT to get away from the smell.
5. A dolphin at mile 98 on the 40% incline. Okay, maybe that was just my deliriousness but I swear I saw one.
COOLEST FINISHING MEDAL EVER and asesome Garmin tan line right?!?!
And the best news of all….I LOVED IT. As soon as I got home and before I showered (to Billy’s dismay) I was already looking up for another century to sign-up for. Um, dare I tell you that an Ironman next summer crossed through my mind at least 4 times a mile……
