The best way to cure dehydration.

Sure glad I got my degree in Health Education. Sure glad I teach my students all about preventing dehydration.  I am also glad I teach my students about the importance of moderation (do you remember my daily sugar intake?)

We got home from Big Bear and I felt like junk.  Billy knew something was wrong when I turned down Twizzlers.  I just thought I was coming down with something but Billy reminded me I had been outside all day with little water and drank a Sobe at lunch instead of water….good thinking Janae.  I was having too much fun trying not to tumble down the mountain (did I mention they took me on the most technical run of the mountain on our first run) to think about drinking anything.

After guzzling water, taking a shower and napping I felt like normal again and the tingling in my limbs went away.

I think dinner helped cure my smart decision of not drinking enough water yesterday. That cucumber salad was AWESOME.  It was cucumber, sugar peas and peppers mixed with a raspberry vinaigrette.

IMG 7167

But the BEST way to overcome dehydration (ps I am completely joking, I do not want to get comments saying how stupid I am) is of course Yogurtland.  They had new flavors today, pb cookie, chocolate milkshake and carmel….you better believe I got all three with a side of 4 other flavors.

IMG 7172

They had STARFRUIT in the toppings section……..I had never had it until last night….neither had Monica……

IMG 7174

And the gorgeous HEATHER and MARGOT.

IMG 7175

Gotta love ending the night comparing food babies.  Nice try Sarah.

IMG 7176

In other news my in-laws are complete enablers.  My FIL brought home 48 jumbo size bags of swedish fish eggs (the Easter ones).  This is not going to end well.   I hope I make it to my 26th year.

At least 10 minutes of conversation last night was spent on the correct topping to ice cream ratio…..What do you think…..MORE TOPPING or MORE ICE CREAM or 50/50?!?!

-I am all about toppings (probably because I eat 14 samples of ice cream before choosing) so my bowl is probably 40% fro-yo and 60% toppings.

Have you ever been dehydrated or had any symptoms of dehydration!?!?  Any hydration hypocrites out there?

Is there a fruit that you have never tried?!?! (not talking about the kinds that can only be found in the rainforest or something)

-Starfruit..

What about a fruit that you DON’T LIKE!?!?!

-Billy HATES bananas (I am adding it to his favorite foods to gradually ease him into liking them) and I am not very fond of starfruit now that I have tried it.

First off…I love reading your blog! You inspire me to get my booty outdoors! I love exploring nature and exercising outside. … And I think we could totally be besties. ;)

I adore fro yo! I like more fro yo than toppings though. My favorite part is getting the sample cups before I actually fill up a bowl. I wonder if you can go in and sample and then leave without buying anything…ha!

I can’t think of a fruit I haven’t tried that they actually carry at the store…besides starfruit. I have no fruit enemies – I love them all.

Hope you have a great day!

I am the worst for rehydrating! I drink about 1/3 of the water I should most days and my BF gives me a hard time about it regularly. He’s looking out for me but what I need him to do is literally pour the water down my throat 6-8 times a day!

Topping to Ice Cream Ratio: Whoah, that is a tough one. It’s such a tough decision. Suppose it’s a personal preference. I’d go with 60/40. 50 percent ice cream to 40 percent toppings. I love lots of toppings but also like to “savor” the creaminess of fro you. This all changes if there are good toppings at the toppings bar.

I’m always dehydrated. Just today after my run, which didn’t go so well. I realized that, yep, I need to drink more water. OOOOOPS.

I’ve never tried starfruit either. I like it just for the name!

I like all fruits..but watermelon is prob my least fave. Bananas are near the top of my list, with apples and strawberries.

HAPPY HOLIDAY WEEKEND!

Reply

I don’t really like cantaloupe! Berries and bananas are my favorite :) I’m jealous of your blogger yogurt meet-ups!

Reply

I think there should be a 50/50 ice cream to topping ratio, at least. I’m a huge fan of toppings!

I also hate bananas. I’ve always thrown them up right after I eat them; I must be allergic or something.

Reply

Ummm…I didn’t know that swedish fish eggs existed! They sound amazing! You know, If you want to avoid the future guilt you’re inevitably going to have from eating all 48 bags, I’d be happy to send you my address so you can get some off your hands. Aren’t I considerate?

I love fruit, period, but I’m most excited about all of the tropical fruit I’ll have practically in my back yard when I move to Africa (um…in two weeks!), you know, mangos, pineapples, papaya, watermelon, passion fruit, avocados, guava…even star fruit! Yum!!

Reply

I drink so much water that I don’t think I’m ever in danger of dehydration :)

Reply

Have I ever been dehydrated?? That’s my middle name. Fruit.. I used to not like peaches now I do, although the hair is weird.

Reply

Is that also a box of Sour Patch Kids underneath the Swedish Fish Eggs??? *jealous*

Sometimes I go 50/50 on the froyo and toppings, but other times I get no toppings so I can just savor the creaminess of my frozen yogurt.

I have had symptoms of dehydration before, but have never had severe dehydration. I try to drink all my water everyday, but sometimes I get busy and forget (lame excuse, I know).

I can’t think of a fruit I haven’t tried…Daniel and I decided last year we would try every fruit and vegetable offered at our grocery store, so each week we bought something new until we had tried them all. Did you know that kiwano melon (aka horned fruit) has a lime green jello-ish consistency on the inside? It was very unique.

I do not like grapefruit. My parents made me drink grapefruit juice when I was younger and I’ve always had an aversion to it since then. I guess I should give it another shot… Daniel doesn’t like cantaloupe and I just don’t get it… Fruit is awesome. :)

Sounds like you’re having an awesome time!!

My jaw literally dropped at the sweedish fish boxes, I am filled with jealousy! Can I help you eat those? Worth the 28 hour drive…

-More ice cream, that’s the point right? Otherwise I’d just eat fruit or candy.
-Yeah, I have been super dehydrated a few times. Once after a softball tournament in 106 degree heat, I spent the entire next day in emesis episdoes and had to get an IV. Unfortunately, not the first or the last time…but one of the worst.
-I am sure there are fruits out there I haven’t tried, I just don’t know the name.
-There was this fruit in Honduras called “leeches”(sp?) I am not sure what they’d be called in English, but they were like bitter/sour grapes with pits. Not a super fan.

HOLY SWEDISH FISH!! Enjoy!

You have to get the ice cream-to-topping ratio of the bowl such that it is 50-50 with each bite, so the amount of toppings you need naturally changes with their size and nature, but I think in totality it would be 50-50 in the bowl as well. Haha, I wish I could’ve participated in this conversation last night!

Reply

50/50m I am going to say, but sadly I have yet to experience this fro-yo excitement!
Yes, I have been dehydrated, tingling limbs, nausea, blurred vision.. it wasn’t pretty.
Never tried starfruit, or grapefruit – if you can believe it?!
Right now I like all fruits that I have tried. He doesn’t like bananas!? Crazy boy ;)

Janae, I have loved hearing about your California lovin’! I am a water drinking fool, but in college I did a 36 hour dance marathon. No sitting for 36 hours! Except for on the toilet, but they had people in there making sure you didn’t take too long. I got soooo dehydrated and felt like crap for 24 hours after. That was intense.

I like my ice cream more than toppings, GASP! So more ice cream, less toppings please! But I do like stuff in my ice cream, like mint choc chip, or moose tracks.

I think I have tried most fruits, and I like everything so far except grapefruit and dried fruits like apricot. Have fun with your swedish fish!!!

Reply

More toppings pleeeease!

Been dehydrated several times and it is NOT fun. I get horrible headaches that don’t go away for at least 24 hours.

I love all fruit except for papaya. I have tried to force myself to like it but the taste is just too weird. My top three are mangoes, bananas and raspberries! Maybe if you mash the banana and hide it in Billy’s food he won’t notice!

Reply

I have never been that dehydrated. I have had the shakes and felt funny but no tingling.

You mean Yogurtland doesn’t cure dehydration??? I am so confused on the nutritional properties of frozen yogurt!

I honestly can not think of a fruit that I don’t like! Maybe some I haven’t tried which I can’t think of right now either! LOL

I like food! ;-)

Reply

I have had dehydration! It was after I attended an all day outdoor music festival. I apparently kept wandering around muttering about feeling funny and my roommate kept force feeding me water. It wasn’t pretty!

Reply

I hate…..watermelon. I know. I feel like I am not a real human but I hate it so much that even the smell of it makes me want to throw up. ICK

Reply

I’m glad you feel better, and that you perked up enough to hit up fro-yo! I definitely think the ratio of fro-yo to toppings is 3:1 in favour of fro-yo. Maybe it’s because I’m not supposed to eat dairy, and fro-yo is a special treat, that I am a bit of a purist…it’s so creamy and good by itself! :-D I don’t really enjoy pomegranate seeds very much, or passion fruit – that slimy seedy texture is not cool. There may very well be a fruit I haven’t tried…but I don’t know what it is because I’ve tried all the ones I know, lol! ;-) xyx
PS: How can anyone hate bananas?! Has he tried them frozen? They’re like ice cream!

Reply

I despise papaya! I think it tastes and smells like feet. It’s honestly one of the only foods, let alone fruit that I can think of hating.

Reply

Today is a re hydrating day for me, I lost 4 pounds of sweat between my bikram hot basketball game last night and my uber hot run this morning. Better re hydrate before the wedding I’m going to tomorrow!

Reply

Always more toppings, except gummy bears/worms/etc because they get too hard with the cold ice cream.
I hardly ever feel dehydrated because I drink so much water during the day. The one time I was dehydrated was at an amusement park because I didn’t wanna pay $5+ for a bottle of water….then I passed out waiting in line.

Reply

ah, i’m sad you didn’t like starfruit! i loved them when i lived in florida! you should try dragonfruit…or sapodilla (which tastes like vanilla) or a black sapote (tastes like CHOCOLATE. NO JOKE!). i love them all!

Reply

Love Sarah, Monica and Margot!! Isn’t Margot the sweetest?? :) Looks like you had a nice time!!

I’ve never tried starfruit. But, I know I don’t like lychee. Other than that I love all fruits!!

Girl, you are going to go into a sugar coma with all of that candy!! I should say sugar/fun coma!! :)

I have been dehydrated more than a few times. I am a very competitive person and in soccer I would push myself to the point of pure exhaustion! My hands and feet would go numb as well as my face and then the blurred vision would creep in too! It’s not a fun feeling. Water is necessary in any sport! I forgot that at times… Not anymore!

I am a 70/30 fro yo girl! I love the fro yo or ice-cream way too much!

I dont like mangos.. Can we still be friends? And I have never experienced papya

Reply

TOPPINGS are the way to go, your ratio is dead on. There should be enough ice cream/froyo to taste in each bite and getting the toppings all nice and soaked but those are the main event for me. I want to live in SOCAL. I need to go to the running store but they opened a froyo place across the street – that combo is a very serious danger to my bank account. Dehydration is my greatest fear, but sometimes I do it on purpose, because I have a tiny bladder, so for concerts and long car trips and stuff where I can’t pee every five minutes it’s necessary. At Wegmans, the world’s greatest grocery store, I find tons of fruits I’ve never heard of (and because of that, I have tried starfruit!). I love figs, a rare but wonderful fruit.

Reply

I don’t really like oranges or pears, and I’m allergic to melons! That includes watermelon. Luckily (?) I’ve been allergic for as long as I can remember, so I don’t really feel deprived.

Reply

I’m sooo bad at remembering to drink water. Especially when I drink a lot of diet coke instead… *cough cough*. oops.

Reply

I love how Margot is shooting you the “she’s crazy” look in the first photo. :) Lady you need to stay hydrated! I mean you workout 19 hrs a day and eat froyo for the other 12, haha. I think you should run a poll to guess how long the swedish fish and eggs last :P

Reply

I hate papayas. I think I have told you this before, how they taste like barf. literally.
But I LOOOOOVE all other kinds of fruit. I think. My favorite simple fro-yo when I don’t go crazy with the cookies and gummy bears is plain tart flavor with pomegranites and honey and blueberries. It is just so sweet and yummy!!!

are these blog friends you are with!????

Reply

The more I see those capris that you wear, the more I want to get a pair :) They look really cute on you!

Reply

I think I’m 50/50 on the ice cream to toppings ratio. And I always, ALWAYS skip the fruit and go right for the candy. I’m sorry, but when I get ice cream, fruit is not usually on my brain. :-P

On a side note, I also own the same grey GAP zip up hoodie that Sarah is rocking in that picture. ;)

Reply

I’m not a big orange fan, even though I like orange juice. There’s something about that stringy white stuff hanging off each section that skeeves me out. :/

I can’t believe that one of the questions isn’t regarding our favorite ice cream topping!! I’m all about toppings… peanut butter cups, oreos, marshmellow cream, whipped cream, caramel, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips… the list could really go on and on. :)

Reply

That yogurt looks amazing! I would probably be a more yogurt/less toppings kinda girl! Holy hell that’s alot of Swedish Fish! You better get to work on that ASAP. Have a great holiday weekend!

Reply

wow that’s a lot of Swedish Fish! hahaha. Hmmm – I’m not a big fan of papaya. I know a couple of other people who don’t like bananas and it baffles me! I LOVE them.

i love alllllll fruit..i dont think i have come across one i do not like!
the only fruit i have a prob with is MANGOS I LOVE THEM butttt they are so freaking hard to cut and all! not a fan
any how sometimes i wish i would get a bit of dehydration cause i pee…like ALL the time

So. Much. Fun!!

So glad you could make it last night!

I do weird things – like I have one half of my bowl that is some responsible fruit filled stuff, then the other half is chocolate with cheesecake and baaaad stuff.

Reply

I’m a topping girl all the way!!! I haven’t met a fruit I didn’t like and one that I can’t think of one that I haven’t tried but I’m sure it’s out there!

I got major dehyrdration after a 30k I ran 2 years ago. It was miserable, I felt so sick and had a monster headache. Never again, must drink water. I love toppings but usually get more ice cream than toppings. Once the toppings are gone, I get sad and throw out the rest of the ice cream.

Reply

Water..who needs water? ha ha who didn’t drink one thing in her first 26.2 mile attempt and ended up in the medical tent. I am an idiot and almost so grateful for that experience because I learned SO MUCH!

I am so jealous of your fro-yo date and I am definitely all about 50/50. I took my Mom to Yogurtland the other day and she only got Yogurt?? I was in complete shock and will be educating her on the importance of proper toppings.

Sorry I am rambling about nothing but I love you and hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Reply

I’m pretty sure its scientific that froyo cures dehydration. :)

Reply

Woah 50/50 ice cream to toppings?! I never even thought of that! For some reason I always just did like 2/3 yogurt to 1/3 toppings… But I do like the toppings better. I’m definitely going to lower my ice cream amount and up my topping intake next time.

Reply

I am dieing of jealously over all your Swedish fish!! They are my all time fave sweet treat!! Your FIL is awesome!

Reply

I hate bananas too!! And more yogurt to toppings ratio (like 70-30), is perfect for me!!

Hydration is vital to me and my headaches (and success for the days)!

Everytime I read your blog I leave wanting to go on a froyo run!

50/50 ice cream to topping ratio is awesome!! gotta have plenty of mix-ins. :)

man, i love how runner bloggers are taking over SoCal, namely Yogurtland…you guys are all way too freaking gorgeous!

dehydration is NOT FUN and i always have to drink a lot to make sure i’m not stuck with the post-workout headache. there have been a few times that it got really bad and i was in a funk for the whole day, but now i try to stay on top of it. glad that u’re feeling much better now! :)

Reply

being dehydrated is the worst feeling! i usually drink tons of water all day long, and when i don’t have much i get awful headaches and sick to my stomach.

i agree with your 40:60 ice cream:topping ratio! loooove my toppings!

i’ve had starfruit a few times, and a couple times it was really good and a couple times it was kinda gross…so i’m thinking that it needs to be perfectly ripe and a really good one to taste good.

i’ve never had swedish fish eggs but want some!!

Reply

I’m 50/50 with fro-yo and toppings. Toppings are way more exciting though! HATE bananas, don’t know why because I used to like them as a kid!

Reply

I am trying to get on this frozen yogurt bandwagon….almost there.

Reply

I originally lived in PA and when I first movedto Vegas I was sad that they didn’t have Tasycaskes. It any readers are from the East Coast you’ll understand. Every now and then I still get care packages FULL of PB Candycakes, Coffee Cakes, etc. It’s brutal.

Reply

I got horribly dehydrated after my first bikram yoga class. I drank a ton of water, but I couldnt keep up with the insane amount of sweat cOming out of my body!

Reply

I gotta agree with you on the 40/60 icecream/topping ratio…I’m lactose intolerant (blech..) so having a little less ice cream means I can avoid stomach issues.

I’m terrible at drinking water, I seriously would only have maybe 2 cups a day if it was up to me. My head however doesn’t agree and I get horrible headaches when I get dehydrated. Or under caffeinated.

I don’t like bananas either! The texture is just beyond weird to me :/ I do like ’em in smoothies and since I get pretty bad muscle cramps I always make sure to have a smoothie with a banana everyday.

Reply

I get dehydrated so easily. I feel like I’m constantly drinking water but sometimes it doesn’t matter. During my half I stopped at every station and still had a killer headache all day.

Reply

I am SO glad you asked about the yogurt to topping ratio because I am constantly having this debate with my boyfriend. I’m probably at about 30% yogurt 70% toppings, so basically I’m eating oreos, m&ms, and whipped cream with a dabble of fro-yo underneath. Fro-yo just isn’t fro-yo without the toppings.

Reply

so i actually felt pretty yucky after frisbee yesterday. I left my water in the car, but it wasn’t too hot so I thought i’d be fine. By the end of the game I felt super yuck. Luckily drinking plenty of fluids after helped!

Reply

I always seem to get dehydrated if I don’t drink gallons of water daily. At least you had an awesome day otherwise!

Reply

first off, how have I never seen easter swedish fish eggs?!

secondly, PB COOKIE AND CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE froyo?

thirdly, why haven’t you teleported me to you yet?

Reply

next time i see you i want at least 10 bags of swedish fish. you think im joking?!

Reply

Hmmmm, I don’t love peaches. But I like peach milkshakes. Does that count?

Reply

Yeah, not a fan of starfruit either. It’s such a shame, because it’s so pretty and comes in the shape of a star! Stars should always taste amazing!

Reply

Totally gotta have more toppings :). I’m not a huge fan of peaches- the fuzz freaks me out and makes me gag haha.

Reply

Did you like the star fruit? It looks really cool but I kind of think it tastes like nothing.

Ever since I gave blood it’s like I’m constantly dehydrated. I drank like three bottles of water on my run today!

Reply

ooh i am a hydration FREAK! i drink a ton and get super anxious when i don’t have water. :P i find that a big cool glass of H2O is the cure to so many icky things!

i’m glad you recovered after your adventures, .. cucumber salad sounds amazing!

hmm, re: ice cream/toppings ratio. it depends on my mood. but 40:60 does sound pretty good!!! love a little bit of everythangg.

Reply

your FIL = awesome!!! I am so jealous of all 48 jumbo sized bags of swedish fish!! I am also really bummed I had to babysit last night and couldn’t join you ladies, but I made more $$$ to spend on yogurtland, sprinkles cupcakes, and running gear :)

Reply

I can’t do kiwi…I actually think I am mildly allergic which apparently isn’t as weird as it sounds. The last time I ate it, my tongue and throat got kind of tingly, and after researching it, I found out that kiwi allergies are increasing. As for fruits I have never tried, I don’t ever remember eating papaya.

Reply

I used to hate bananas but all of a sudden I love them?!? Ever since I started doing the frozen banana soft serve thing I can’t get enough.

But more importantly, PB COOKIE FROYO? I hope hope hope my Yogurtland has that this weekend!!

Reply

I def don’t drink enough water. When I ran (more like survived) the Nashville Marathon a couple yrs ago, I got dehydrated. It was sooo hot and stupid me wore my black dry fit shirt that we got for running the race. I guess I was proud, but didn’t ned to wear it during the race. 3 people died from that hot race. :( Another time I got dehydrated was about a month ago. I was going for a 13miler and started too late.=heat! I had 1 mile to go. I had to go in a gas station and ask for water. I chugged it, and slowly made it back. I know it’s bad but I just don’t like water. The only time I want it is after a run and then I love ice water. I drink toooooooo much diet mtn dew=:(

Reply

Hahaha I just did a double take on the swedish fish. I have been trying to cut back, I know I know, practically a sin. I have a stash in my freezer that I am trying desperately not to eat….

Reply

I used to be more of a 80% froyo 20% toppings kind of gal, but lately I’ve turned into about a 95% froyo 5% toppings girl.

I figure I can eat lots and lots of froyo at Yogurtland and then lots of lots of candy at my own house. That’s my logic at least ;)
