My Running Soap Opera.

I am truly sorry to drag you all through my ups and downs of running but I like to talk about it so I guess you have to deal with it:)

It has been over a month of no running whatsoever and after talking to my doc on Friday and performing the drills with no pain he cleared me to try out a mile TODAY.  Hopefully, as you are reading this I am frolicking along on the treadmill pain free and happy as a I am in a candy store (or Yogurland).    I am really hoping that it was just a bad case of shin splints and I am free to start back up SLOWLY but surely.

I am STOKED of course but I am going to 100% listen to my body and if it hurts, then I will STOP and climb onto my lovely spin bike.  I think I will stick to the treadmill (because I can control my speed and incline) for a while this time around.  I know some think that the treadmill causes injuries etc but for me I have never gotten injured using the treadmill and I think it works well for my body.

Okay, enough of that….oh, and I promise if things don’t go well I won’t drag you through another episode of me complaining, crying and eating a 3 lb. bag of swedish fish to help glue my broken heart back together;)  I am not dramatic at all.

As you know, I am a big goal-setter. I gotta hold off for a little while on the running goals, so I have switched gears into beating the world record for watermelon eating.

Screen Shot 2011 07 24 at 8 37 34 PM

Jim, I am sorry but you are about to lose your title.  I am shooting for 14 lbs. in 14 minutes.

Is it weird that I find white bread with butter that has been broiled to be beautiful.  Don’t answer that.

IMG 8051

I kind of have a dilemma.  In a few weeks we are going to be back in Utah without Billy’s mom cooking for us.  Billy will be back to eating what I make for him (tuna salads, canned soup, baked potatoes and frozen burritos).  How is he going to be able to handle the transition of going from his favorite food ever (pulled pork sandwiches) to broccoli casserole every night?

IMG 8057

Keep in mind I already ate 48 chunks of watermelon previous to this photo, do not doubt my newest goal in life.

IMG 8056

I think Charlie found my secret stash of skittles.

IMG 8059

To end the night off we are watching White Chicks with the in-laws……I have a feeling things are about to get awkward.  ***Edited to add:  We couldn’t handle it so we watched The Proposal….OBSESSED with that movie!

Dessert will be round two of watermelon.  I am already pulling off 2-a-days with my new watermelon training schedule.  Please help me to reach my dreams.

PPS I haven’t posted my lulu purchases because I have to take them back because I found out that I get a discount for being an instructor.

———————————————————————

Who are some of your favorite actors?

-Ryan Reynolds, Matt Damon, Denzel Washington and Johnny Depp.

What are your food/fitness goals this week or month?

-Besides my watermelon eating goals, I am going to focus on being smart about my running and keep up my weight training schedule because I think it plays a huge roal in injury prevention!

Do you feel like running is a roller coaster too?  Explain!!!! (Sorry, that sounded like an essay question)

Running is totally a roller coaster for me, or at least my love for it has the same ups and downs (I actually wrote about this yesterday!) Some days I like it, some days I love it and some days I want to stop running for ever and ever. There are a lot of factors that go into those feelings I am sure and I keep coming back so deep down I know I have more positive feelings about it then not.

I am so excited for youuu! :D I hope that mile goes great :) Did you watch the Proposal on T.V last night? I did! I didn’t finish it though because it didn’t end until 1am and my body can’t stay awake that long. BTW the temp today (only today, the rest of the week will be HOT!) is going to be like 79 later tonight! So excited to get out there and be able to run more then a mile :P I am such a mile-wuss in this heat! :)

Good luck with your run!
This month I want (need?) to be more consistent with my workouts. Because I’m not training for a race, I haven’t been as focused. I want to do a better job of that this month.
Running is definitely a roller coaster. You set a PR and you’re up. You get injured and you’re down. It’s hard sometimes to find balance too because we (runners) tend to keep pushing ourselves.
Can’t wait to hear how your run went. Sending good thoughts for a pain free mile!

Two thumbs up for The Proposal. I may or may not have convinced (made) everyone I know watch that movie after it came out on DVD. So hilarious!

Best of luck with the run–may your body let you run the whole mile–and ask for more! :P

Good, good, GOOD luck on your run! I am out in a few to try .6 mile… My third run. My doctor started me at .5 mile. You’re already ahead of me.:)

YESSSS watermelon champion in training!! :)

I feel like running is a rollercoaster for sure – some days I love it and feel great. Other days my legs feel like dead weights and I want to cry on my runs. Or I’m just highly emotional. Who can be for sure? ;)

love The Proposal too – actually love Sandra & Ryan together! Good Luck on your mile run – fingers crossed it goes well for you! :-)

Good luck on your run today!!!

Running has been a total roller coaster ride for me the past few years too! But it’s totally worth it. I think I am about to commit to a half in October, but am also going to be SMART about my training and try not to over do it/get injured before the race.

I have total confidence in your ability to eat 14 lbs of watermelon. Keep to your 2 a day training plan and you should be golden ;)

I have had a crush on Paul Walker since Fast and the Furious, but he sadly disappeared off the face of the earth! :(

I hope your test run went well!
I am so with you on the watermelon–eating a crap ton of it lately. So good for hydration in the heat!

Running has always been difficult for me and yes it has been a huge roller coaster. I have had a few injuries that have caused me problems plus I have fat girls arthritis in my knees so it’s like any moment I could be in ridic pain! OH well, who cares we just gotta get over it right?

* Also I have posted a pic of my scarf/cat on my blog so you can see her!

Matt Damon…….absolutely yes!

My eating has been in such a great place this summer. It’s been lovely living in such a place of balance with this. One thing that needs tweeking though, is I am craving diet soda after dinner. I always know its become routine when my hubby says something and last night it was “what’s with the diet mt dew?”

roller coaster? Yes, it goes from being a best friend that i want to be with all day everyday to being an aquaitance who I am fine seeing once a week for 45 minutes. However, it always comes back around to be my BFF so i no longer fear when I am in a lull.

Happy TM run!!!!

Hang in there Janae!!!!! Hmm I WISH I could lose 10 pounds. NO matter what I do my weight just sticks, even with all this half IM training. UGH!!!

Roller coaster. Well I’ve trained for 7 marathons and run 3, not to mentioned my 3rd was run on a very painful sfx. Roller coaster is putting it mild. :(

Pulled pork is not so bad to make. You can do it in the slow cooker.
– 2 pounds pork tenderloin
– 500 mL (2 cups) root beer
– 1 onion
– Cook on low for 8 hours

Shred it up, add 2 cups bbq sauce. AND YOU’RE A HERO!

Oh, so excited for you!!!!!! :-D Hope your run goes well! <3
I LOVE the Proposal! My favourite parts: when Ryan Reynolds goes: "Oh my god, why are you wet?!!", when they are lying in bed singing those old songs in Ryan's squeaky voice, and when Sandra is doing the chant around the fire. "Freeeeak!" :-P So funny :-)
My favourite actors are Leo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck, James Franco and Ryan Reynolds.
I'm working on keeping a balance between weight training, yoga and interval cardio this month…it's really fun! <3 xyx

Reply

I love the movie “The Proposal”, too! And best of luck on your watermelon eating … it’s good to have goals in life! ;)

Running is fairly new to me, and I definitely consider it a “roller-coaster.” I have good days and bad days. Yesterday hubby and I ran 8 miles and I felt pretty darn good! Other days, I’m just scheduled to run 3 or 4 miles and it’s all I can do to get through them! Body part hurt, I whine… it’s not pretty. But overall, I really love it and don’t want to give up trying!

Reply

First of all I think some runners are more prone to injury, and if you are one of those people (weren’t you out with bum knee last fall?) then you have to accept that and be more diligent about your training. Some people never get hurt and we can secretly hate them, j/k.

Something that has helped me is to train with a purpose, not doing a bunch of junk, slow runs just because I feel like I have to be out running. Maybe you could benefit from the Run Less Run Faster book which incorporates a lot of hard cross-training. Also you were running in really light/fast shoes, maybe you need something sturdier. I run in the Brooks Launch for speedwork but I think you were using those and other somewhat “minimal” shoes for long runs. Maybe your body is tell you that that type of shoe isn’t right for you.

However, Runner’s World had a post the other day that cushioning and soft surfaces might not prevent injury, and that shorter stride could. You might want to look into that or talk to your running coach. Good luck!

Ahhh, good luck on your mile girl!! i hope its goes very smoothly.

favorite actors? thats a tough one! i’d have to sayyy…seth rogen, steve carrell and jason bateman!

I’m going off to visit my family in El Salvador starting this weds…and i’ll be gone for 10 days. the hardest part about this is that I probably wont be able to run while im over there. No access to a gym/treadmill and its dangerous to run around alone outside. Im trying not to think too much about it…and I have this feeling that my body probably NEEDS this break…my right heel has been having a nagging aching feeling for the past couple weeks and even buying new shoes hasnt helped it a ton, I think a break could help. Especially since i’ve def increased mileage in the past couple months…I dont know. its just rough and very difficult for me not to be active. I might bring a workout dvd or SOMETHING to keep sane. but to make me feel better, I think of your posts detailing these same kind of situations…and I need to really enjoy this time with my family because I know that time is precious. Life cant just be all about exercise and running. and hopefully as long as I try to eat as well as I can, i’ll be ok. and hopefully SUPER amped for a run as soon as I come back. just had to share that little tidbit with you :)

Reply

I love that pic of the dog! hahaha, sooo adorable.

I don’t think I could handle White Chicks either. But I do love The Proposal.

I think my favorite actor is Robert Downey Jr. He’s soooo talented and gets better looking with age. *swoon*

girl! you know i know exactly how you feel about this running rollercoaster game! i was out for a month in feb due to an ankle injury then back for a bit then my hips started then i have been on and off and now completely off with these hips and my knee!! ahh sometimes i just wanna scream!
i am so so so so so happy for you that you get to try out a mile today! you go girl! and way to be positive about listening to you body you can def do it!

This month I am working on speed and I got a dog a week ago so I am working on getting her into running partner shape. She has a long ways to go. She did .68 miles today at 10:23 pace which is .08 better than her last run! I feel like Jillian Michaels of the dog world. Running is a roller coaster. I love it but I hate it when it feels like a chore and dread the night before a long run but love the during and after of a long run. Then there is the ups and downs of aches and pains and crappy days and days where you can run forever. Favorite actors Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg.

Reply

White Chicks with the ‘rents….talk about modern parents! I used to love watermelon when I was a munchkin’, but now I can’t stand it? I may give it another go soon. I really hope your legs are “fixed” and you can run now.

My food/ fitness goals are to try to incorporate fun exercise at least 5 days a week (the treadmill’s gettin’ a little boring), and to stop with all the white sugar. I would be embarrassed to tell you how much of my diet has consisted of the “dessert” food group.

Reply

I feel ya with the running thing girl! Although I am not nearly as dedicated or speedy as you, I’ve been injured since the end of April and can’t work out at all. The only exercise I’ve been cleared to do is swim and I don’t have anywhere to do that so I got nada. It is so so frustrating! I actually don’t love running like you do… I have more of a love/hate relationship with it.. but now that I can’t run, it’s all I want to do! Plus, I live in Chicago and I’m going to miss racing season since it’s short here considering winter is the season that lasts 10 months of the year. I am so bummed!! I am hoping this will just make me a more committed athlete in the future though!

Good luck with your run!

Reply

What I wouldn’t give to run a mile! I think it’s a good thing to stick to the treadmill too. It’s easier to monitor your progress and slow down. Just ease back in! No 11 miles by next week!

My running rollercoaster…….I’ve been out of my boot for 3 weeks and am still off impact exercise. At least I can walk! Just spent a week at the beach walking in the sand. Hope that helped strengthen my foot muscles. I had no idea that I would be ‘healing’ for so long!
Tomorrow I pick up my custom orthotics and then I have to just wear them for two weeks before I can start back at 10% a week of what I was at when I broke the good ole’ sesamoid bone.

Can’t wait to hear about your run. I hope it was pain free and glorious!

And….Matt Damon!! Just watched The Adjustment Bureau! Good movie!
Goals…..eat healthy after a week on vacation. Might have picked up a few lbs! yikes! And continue to weight train and walk on the treadmill. Gotta break in those orthotics! That makes me sound really old!

Reply

good luck with the 1 miler! I think the treadmill is a good idea b/c you can monitor the pace and incline, but running is running and I think injuries come from too much too soon no matter what the surface is.

Reply

We watched the Proposal with my whole family on vacation last week!

That is a lot of watermelon! At least you’ll stay hydrated.

Good luck on your run!!

Reply

Yup running is nothing if not a roller coaster. I don’t know what it is that keeps me coming back to it. Sometimes it seems like the worst thing in the world and I think “what is wrong with me? this isn’t fun at all. X hurts, Y hurts. I’m just going to give up running”, then I might go out and have the greatest run and be on top of the world! it’s so unpredictable.

I think Christian Bale is just amazing, he’s one of the true greats. So versatile, so believable. He sucks you right in. I also put Johnny Depp in this category. I like Matt Damon a lot too, the Bourne series is so great and Good will hunting is one of my favorite movies.

My goals fitness wise – exercise more! I was always so good at getting to the gym very regularly, did a ton of exercise (yes.. too much). But since my injury I’ve gone in the other direction. I couldn’t exercise for so long that now I can and I don’t. Maybe because i still can’t really run, I feel like it’s hard to muster up the energy to do other stuff.

I eat a ferocious amount of watermelon, especially now that they are so yummy. Yesterday I ate half a watermelon, and I could have eaten the whole thing too. It’s like my body doesn’t even register the melon as food.

Reply

My favorite actors would have to be:
Ryan Renolds, Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Spacey, jason bateman, and OH! Chris Evans. :D (Haven’t seen many movies with him…but he’s nice to look at ;) )

My fitness goals for this week would probably be to lift weights 2x this week. I’ve been slacking on the weights since I’ve become addicted to running. (8 miles this morning! I hope you’re run goes good! I’m sorry that you have had to go so long without running. I run on the treadmill too and I haven’t had any injuries-knock on wood! Now that I’ve started, I can’t imagine not being able to run. Hope everything goes okay!)

That huge bowl of watermelon looks delicious. I haven’t had much watermelon this summer…sadly. There’s another goal! Go to the fruit market and load up on fruit…because before I know it winter will be here and the fruit will suck. :(
White chicks is SO FUNNY! I love that movie.

Have a great day!

Running is definitely like a roller coaster, especially when injuries and recovering are involved. You are ABSOLUTELY doing the right thing by taking it easy and listening to the docs. It’s nice to have different goals to focus on instead (like…watermelon eating contests!)
:)

Reply

I hope your mile goes well today. Your positive attitude throughout your injuries is truly impressive and inspiring.

My goals for this week are to focus on strength training and to start a deep water fitness class and swimming 4 times/week.

Running is definitely a roller coaster for me, and I have had a lot of ups and downs this past week. Up – running my first half, down – not meeting my secret time goal, up – getting over it and getting more motivated, down – getting hurt on my first run after (I had been ignoring some early signs of the injury). Right now I am on a down for awhile due to posterior tibial tendonitis.

Some days I think I should listen to all of the non-runners who tell me to stop running, I am too old, etc. But then I remember what a difference running makes in every aspect of my life. So I need to try the water fitness thing, and try to remember how to swim and push through it.

Reply

Yeah White Chicks would of made me blush around my future inlaws! My goals for the week are to pump some major iron and to just stay on track (I have been getting off track here lately!) By the way I just had to show you what crazy 5k went on in my city…

mmm watermelon – a summer food addiction (only because I can’t find it/can’t find good pieces of it in the fall/winter/spring)!!

No real favorite actors/actresses – I love HGTV. Discovery, and TLC so if there is a reality show on any of those channels, chances are I love the stars.
Running goal – not to over do it on my foot. I don’t think plantar fasciitis is a legit “injury” so I feel like a wimp if I use that as an excuse not to run.
Of course running is a roller coaster! I have a love/hate relationship with it. I hate waking up at 4:45 am for my long runs, I hate having to run on the treadmill because it is so blazing hot…. But I LOVE the feeling of accomplishment after a good training run and I love the sense of community.

Reply

I know the running roller coaster is a tough one! I too have had CRAZY running problems since late February, yeah, IT Band, Bronchitis, Shingles and just as I was preparing for my Marine Corp Marathon in Oct, I went for a 10 miler on Sat and my IT Band started bugging me again. It’s so TOUGH! I feel like I’ve tossed an entire year of trying out the window. I know you’ve gone through much of the same. Just keep on trying, it’ll all come back to normal soon enough. AND, when you do get back out there and race it’s gonna be twice as sweet! I promise!

Reply

Exercise in general is a roller coaster for me. The first and easiest excuse I have is a knee injury but being honest- I have NEVER enjoyed exercising. It just seemed pointless and hard to me. However, lately I have found yoga to be incredible at helping my knee injury out. It is fantastic!

My exercise goals for the week are incredibly simple. Go to the gym twice. Do yoga twice.

Reply

I really hope you are good to go this time! yes, running is a roller coaster, even when healthy! But that’s why we love it, I suppose.

Good luck with the watermelon record–you can do it!

Reply

I hope you had a great pain free run!!! I have a different problem; I would love to be a good runner, but I have some issues with my esophagus which inables me to run.
My fitness goal for this coming month is working out with my dad! I haven’t seen him in more than a year, so that’ll be fun.
Favourite actors; Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper, Jake Gyllenhaal. Bonus; they’re super cute!

how was that mile? …. do tell.

we watched the proposal last night too. it is so dang funny. i think ryan reynolds is funny and quite the looker but, i love ryan gosling even more .. yes. he’s my favorite. and jeff bridges. that’s a confession. i think jeff bridges is sexy. you like johnny depp? have you ever seen “what’s eating gilbert grape?” one of my all time favorite films. i like johnny too.

food/fitness goals for me this month = keeping on. i’m trying to not consume so much dang sugar. it does not agree with me and i feel best without it. and pairing my carbs with protein all the time. it’s harder than i’d like for it to be.

you’re not giving yourself enough credit as a wifey. you cook for your man, i know you do.

Yes, running/working out/ training is an emotional roller coaster for anyone. When we do something passionately and it becomes part of our lifestyle, it is difficult to be told that we cannot. I have put running on hold for 10 months – zero running- due to three foot surgeries and a fracture. Instead I went back to another love-mountain bike racing. I am less than 2 weeks away from a 50 miler and hating my bike right now. I got a gait analysis yesterday and bought a new pair of running shoes. It does not matter what sport, we all go up and down and back and forth. My best advice-keep your hard days hard and your easy days easy. And listen to your body more than your mind.

Reply

Running as a roller coaster- more like a bungee jump, where the highs are higher and the lows are lower than a roller coaster. I find that when I’m injured (like I am right now- recovering from a stress fracture and shin splints) or when I’m overtraining, I hate running more than I hate broccoli (sorry, Janae!) but that when I’m in good shape, I love it more than anything. It can give me such an amazing high when I listen to my body and let it.

I am soooo relating to the ups and downs of running. I’ve mentioned my recovery from a pelvic stress fx & am now 6 weeks into my return to running plan. I appreciate so much every time I get to run because of having missed out on it for so long BUT I also feel like I am holding myself back emotionally from enjoying it because I’m afraid of getting injured again. I feel like I’m being conservative and doing everything I can to avoid re-injury but I get knots in my stomach just thinking about the what ifs. I’m rambling but I am wondering if you have dealt with this challenge and if you have, will I get to a point where I don’t worry?
Enjoy your watermelon training-a yummy endeavor for sure!!!

Totally totally agree with you! I ran a whole kilometre pain free for the first time in 8 weeks on friday and was grinning like a loon the entire way through! Hit the road today and did 2.74 miles…it was a bit achey towards the end but think I’m getting there. I just HATE HATE HATE how hard it is after such a long lay off – I feel like I’m never ever going to be back able to be running 14/15 miles again as a long run when 3 nearly killed me. ho hum, we’ll get there soon! It just takes time and for me, longs of silly little leg bending and hip moving exercises from the physio! Hope it went ok :D fingers crossed for you!
I love both those films!

OH KATIE…I know exactly how you feel!! I am thrilled you got 2.74 miles in WAHOOOOOO!!! We will get back there, it may take forever but we will do it!

I found you’re blog a few weeks ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. Love it!

I would love to hear the specifics of the drills your doctor has you doing. I’ve been suffering with shin splints off-and-on for a long time. Any stretches/exercises you’ve done for them? I want my shin splints gone for good. Thanks!

Reply

HEY JULIE!! Thank you so so much for your comment!! So glad you found me:) I am SO sorry that you are dealing with shin splints…they SUCK!! The drills my doc had me do were to see if it was a stress fracture (jumping on one leg, having someone push down on the area etc).

Basically, I took off running completely for over a month, iced twice a day, strengthened my calves with calf raises and wrote the alphabet with my toes whenever I was sitting down! Keep me updated!! Praying they go away for you!

Reply

Thanks for the tips, Janae! I will definitely try those things. I ran 1/2 mile today pain free, so I’m hoping I can start building up slowly. Thanks again!

I love the Proposal! Sandra Bullock is my favorite actress! My fitness goals this week are 40-60 minutes cardio plus one workout dvd for strength or stretching. I love how watermelon is so cold and melts in your mouth. I ate about half a watermelon in one sitting the last time we bought one.

I love watermelon. Ultimate favourite summer fruit!
