Late to SPIN and NEED help with WEIGHTS!!!

It is getting kind of ridiculous how much I am loving sleeping in this summer.  I guess I am just catching up on all of the months of the 4:45 a.m. wake up call to go run.

I was that person that walked into spin class a half an hour late and had a ton of energy while the other spinners looked at me and thought about how they had already been working for 30 minutes straight kicking trash on their bikes while I just wandered in after a leisurely morning.

Photo 4

I finished up 30 minutes with the class and then stayed and did 15 on my own.   Great picture quality I know, but after taking my nice camera to Lake Powell last month and filling the lense with 12 ounces of sand Billy has set restrictions on where I take the DSLR.

After the class I hit the treadmill for one mile in 8:30 to test out my new gear (hint…..check back in an hour to become my twinner) and finished up with 15 minutes on the elliptical (while reading blogs of course) and 6 minutes of weights.

I. NEED. TO. FIND. A. GOOD. WEIGHTS. CLASS. because I do not have the patience to do them on my own without a class or my sister.

WHAT WAS YOUR WORKOUT TODAY!?!?!

When and how do you get motivated to LIFT and strengthen those muscles of yours?!?!

Classes, Jillian screaming at me and my sister telling me to stop being a baby and just DO IT.

I LOVE to lift weights. My boyfriend is a trainer, he got me into circuit training. It goes by so much faster, and it’s freaking hard! You should try it out…I don’t have good classes to go to so I have to motivate myself haha.

I love love love love love love my BodyPump classesssssssss!

i love to lift weights! i used to be a runner and that’s it but over the past few yrs have incorporated a lot of weights into my life. taking classes definitely helps if you’re a beginner. I like oxygen magazine too they always have good ideas and advice on lifting. im kind of the opposite now..i have to motivate myself to run..not so much to lift!

Reply

Ummm… I don’t? I know I neeeed to lift and shoooould lift, but I never do! I’m doing good if I get 5 minutes of core work in.

Oh, I can’t do weights on my own either. I mean, I can. But it lasts for like one or two sessions, then I’m done. So, I HAVE to have a personal trainer. Just so I lift weights.
It’s a ridiculously expensive habit that I don’t recommend. If I had a sister, I would make her my workout buddy, save money, and retire early on what I’m paying these trainers!

Once you get started, you’ll be hooked. I love strength training, I’d actually prefer that to cardio. Start with a class or hire a personal trainer for a few sessions. I promise…you will fall in love!

I find it hard to motivate myself as well, but lifting is so so important for bone strength and keeping your metabolism chugging. I like to do workouts outside on playground for a fun spin on lifting weights.

Jillian is def a favorite of mine. Ihave ZERO motivation to do weights on my own… I only tried Jillian once this past week but I’m still feeling it two days later so I think it worked ;) haha

Weight training use to be REALLY hard for me to stick with… I would do 1 set and then find myself back on the stair master or treadmill. UNTIL :) i started to do the weights in circuits. It makes the time fly by and i actually look forward to my weight training days! :) Good luck!

My wings (aka hangy down arm flab) need some serious weight action. But it’s just so hard to pick up those measly little 8 lb weights. Don’t know why. Just is.

That’s my new goal is to do more weights. And I used to really like the P90X videos for arms and back. Maybe i’ll try that….again.

I can’t ever do weight training unless I have someone there forcing me to do it. I’m a giant wuss!

I usually go to bodypump type classes because they motivate me to push myself sooooo much more than working on my own. I find that if I have a set plan written down for exactly what I’m going to do and do circuit style, it is much easier for me to get a good weight workout in and not get bored.

I actually got a few arm exercises from you! And they are tough ones!! I’m posting a weight workout today that includes them, so maybe I’ll send a few of my five readers your way :)

The feeling I have after lifting is my motivation to lift. I highly recommend doing Body Pump or some form of it… seriously, it’s kick butt and once you’re there you won’t want to be “that girl” and walk out without finishing the class.

Well since you don’t have motivation problems with getting to the gym, you’ve already mastered the hardest part. You’re already there, so why not throw some weights in! Some of my toughest weight workouts are when I choose a muscle group and then work it hard for the duration of a song. They do that a lot in some of the classes I’ve been to and it pushes me a lot further than I would have gone by doing a certain number of sets/reps. And writing things down helps a lot as well. Setting goals, and tracking your progress to see how far you’ve come can be a big motivator.

I love having ripped arms and toned legs, so weight lifting is a natural motivator to me. And ACTUALLY, I’m starting a new site soon specifically dedicated to lifting (and other workout) moves so I’ll be sure to shoot you the link when it’s live!

p.s. Isn’t spin theeeee best?!

I enjoy Jillian screaming at me, I also have bought some books that have great moves, but I just get lazy and say I will do them later. I find Jillian to be the perfect way to get them in.

i love Oxygen magazine for lifting ideas!! the entire magazine has a great message and lots of awesome recipes and workouts :)

My workout was strength + run! If I don’t want to lift, I just tell myself that I can’t run until I have at least done upper or lower body work!

No workout today, yet. Crappy weather and a headache make me want to say forget it. BUT I’m scheduled to go spend an hour with my dear friend eli(pitcal) – and I will do it, or I wont make my 100+ miles this month.

Sometimes I just lift weights just to do it – not often tho. I usually use videos – or power yoga, I find that works better than weights!

I agree, love the videos, and I bought the 30 Day Shred as you recommended it, but haven’t tried it yet. I got caught up running the last few days with the nice (non-rainy) weather we finally got!

I’ve been lifting weights for a long time. It’s quite fun if you approach it in a goal oriented way. So lets say, you do some squats and 65lbs is hard. Then next week try 70lbs etc.
Make the weights a “competition” also. Challenge yourself. Make goals. Like – “I want to do 5 pullups”, “I want to do 50 pushups in a row” etc.
Maybe even incorporate strength into your long cardio session. So say-
10 mins elliptical
10 pullups (jump or assisted if you can’t do them yet)
15 pushups
20 squats with a weight
20 mins elliptical
50 kettlebell swings
50 walking lunges with weight
20 mins elliptical
20 squats with weight
15 pushups
10 pullups
10 mins elliptical

use a weight that is challenging, and record it. So in two weeks you can look back and say.. hmm. I did squats with 50 pounds and it felt hard and I had to stop and rest a couple times. This week I did 20 straight through so maybe I will use 60 pounds next time!
And, check out your guns in the mirror often…
:)

OH MY GOODNESS! YOU ARE MY HERO!!! That workout looks perfect for me because it is broken up into segments!! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!! Should I pay you for being my personal trainer:)

Group Power is a fun choreographed weight class. I rarely do it because it doesn’t coincide with my kids swimming (and, therefor my gym time) but it’s a great full body work out and the music changes all the time.

This morning a ran 3 mi with the neighbor, and now I am off to kids swimming/gym for me. At the gym, I’ll probably warm up with 4 mi on the TM and then weights for legs.

I’ll check in again … I am so going to be your twinner.

I love Spinning! It is such a great workout! Cute outfit! I want to be twinners with you!

My “workout” consisted of walking my dog and daughter in the wagon around the neighborhood, and chasing My cutie at the splash park all afternoon! It was so much fun, but I am beat from the HOT HEAT!!

Have a great day in Cali!!

6 mi run treadmill! and weights and abs after!

i stay motivated by doing weights just because I take it as my cool down time— i blast my music up and know because I am one of the only girls at my gym that lifts hand weights that I look pretty kick ***—and that is motivation enough for me! (even if i really am not– i just tell myself I am as I lift! haha)

I ran 7 miles – 6 in Central Park and 1 to and from Central Park. Miles were mucho slow because it was sweat-buckets hot outside!

I’m like you with weights. I need weights classes because I do the same thing every time.

Don’t feel bad about sleeping in. You deserve it girl!

Argh. I skipped my workout today because I have a sore throat and a cough! Who gets colds in the summer?!?!? This girl, apparently. Sucks.

Hope to be back at it tomorrow, though!!!

Todays workout = nothing but an ab workout!!! :)

i’m the same as you – hard to get motivated to do weights!! i’ve started going to bodypump at my gym and i am LOVING it! the way they have you switch muscle groups to each track makes the time fly and is good for my workout ADD!

Today is my weight day. I use a personal circuit plan worked out for me by the trainer at our gym. I like that it is all written down for me. I usually finish up with 30 minutes on the bike or eliptical. I want to be “twinners”. Love the new gear!

I love weights, but have to be in a class or have Jillian yell at me or I am a total slacker. Gym weight rooms intimidate me. I like BodyPump, but don’t get to take it often.

Today’s workout – Ripped in 30 w/meany Jillian, speedy 5k walk, a ton of lunges/squats…. and tonight I am teaching my first fitness class. EEEKKS!!! Wish me luck, I know you are a veteran, but I am so nervous.

Reply

AHHHH HOW DID YOUR FIRST CLASS GO!?!?! I NEED DETAILS!! I AM SO SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!

Reply

Thanks Janae! My instructor asked me to teach the class while she is on vaca and gave me one day’s notice, yikes! Considering I didn’t have much prep time, it probably could have been worse. I didn’t cry or puke and had a giant ice cream bowl when I got home to eat my anxiety. Now I have more practicing to do before class on Sunday. Major kudos to all of you instructors out there!! ;)

I do Pilates for my strength…I don’t do weights and Pilates has enough strength training to keep me toned! I do it 3 times a week for an hour. Combined with my running and sometimes spinning I think its working for me! Today I did a half hearted run for 30 minutes and I have a softball game tonight. It was half hearted because I have had a stressful day at work, I am tired and my bum is sore from doing too many lunges on Tuesday!!

I love crossfit stuff. Gppfitness.com or crossfit22.com (there are several sites for crossfit, but these 2 places I follow and rotate between the 2).
Doing these workouts has increAsed my fitness levels dramatically, helped me run faster and my workout is laid out for me everyday. There is a learning curve but once u figure out all the moves it is so much fun!! I highly recommend it! There is no thinking invlolved which I love!!

I use a journal to motivate me to do weights. I try to increase the weight as the weeks go by. Seeing that I’ve become stronger written on paper motivates me and makes me want to push harder! Check out bodyrock.tv as well. That girl is crazy strong and has some pretty good workouts (once you can look passed her crazy body) that require little weights (mostly just body weight).

I’m totally like you, I have weights ADD! I just wrote about this today actually :-) Body Pump is the bomb.com though, and the only way I’ll do a whole session of pure strength, but otherwise I do weights after my cardio for about 15 minutes focusing on a different body part (eg: lower) each time. I LOVE yoga so count that as strength too…and that definitely gets it’s own dedicated days/sessions :-) Yoga can be such hard work too, and really can build strength. I know weight training is so important – in my teens I was diagnosed with osteoporosis/osteopaena (sp?) cause I lost my period for about 2 years (all cool now…yay! :-)) and the doctors told me how important strength training is for building bone density. That was when/why I really got motivated to yoga and lift :-) xyx

P90X! You dont really need alot of weights and it is a great workout.

I honestly love looking at my muscles in the mirror! LOL. So that’s enough motivation for me! :)

my swimsuit.
that’s all i need to motivate me.
and i still want cameron diaz’s arms.

Reply

I just focus on how strong and toned I’m going to be! And I do them with 3 sets of 8-12 reps per exercise, and I do supersets. Makes ’em go by SO fast!

Wait, I canont fathom it being so straightforward.
