I bet you are just LOVING my ‘running’ blog lately:)  I decided that instead of describing in full detail my fifteen minutes on the elliptical at level 3 this morning I would talk about something a little more interesting.  Okay, probably not too interesting but more cool than talking about the fact that I have eaten approximately 5 eggs already today or the fact that I may or may not have lost my car keys for a full 3 hours.  I think my mind is just too busy thinking of how to solve world peace and inventing cold fusion instead of minor things like not leaving my keys in the bathroom and then having them stolen by a student. Cool.

A while ago I asked for any questions in this postand the CUTEST Alexisasked….

“What made you decide to be a teacher?”

I think I always knew I would be a teacher but didn’t figure it out until my sophomore year of college.  I was a nutrition major and as much as I loved it, I didn’t really know what I would do with my degree.  I love ALL things food and fitness obviously and I knew that for my future job I needed to be up and around moving as much as humanly possible.  I was also a nanny at the time for two jr. high kids and realized that I thought they were absolutely hilarious and so much fun to work with.

The light turned on.  I enjoy being around teenagers (because I will always be one) and I LOVE food and fitness.  Duh, a health teacher it is.  I switched my major to Health Education with a minor in Drivers Ed (yes, I like driving but I made this decision because drivers ed teachers make more money = I can buy more Cafe Rio).

I graduated and got my first job as a health and drivers ed teacher and the following year I was asked to pick up history, student gov, a self-esteem course and p.e.  Makes for a busy day.

Don’t underestimate my muscles people.

I will probably be sued for putting pictures of former students on the internet but these kids are all graduated by now so I don’t think that it matters anymore.

Dang, I am looking forward to summer but honestly I love my job so much for many reasons but the main one being that I get to do things like buy an elmo pinata and bring it to school.

How did you figure out what you wanted to be when you grew up?  Are you still trying to figure it out?  Do you think it will change over time?

-I hope to teach for a little while longer-be a mom-own a restaurant and blog the whole time, oh and get paid to run!

Who was your favorite teacher?  What year was it?

-I have three.  Mrs. Paey (she reads my blog now but I promise I am not saying this to win points) taught me psychology, student government and people even said we looked alike.  Mr. Hall taught HEALTH and I even had him as a professor at BYU…..he inspired me to switch my mini donuts for oranges every now and then in high school:) Mrs. Burton was my 5th grade teacher and put EVERYTHING she had into teaching us.

I'm still trying to figure it out. I'm a chemistry major, but boy do I hate chemistry, so who knows where I'm going to go!

Two of my most memorable teachers were: Mr. Sheppard, who told me I could succeed at anything I wanted to; I just had to buddy up to the smartest kid in my major (guess what I did as SOON as I became a chem major?) and Ms. Brooks, a history teacher I had in high school. She was SO passionate about history, and it was infectious. She was also the sweetest person and helped me through some personal crises.

I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, but the more I read blogs by teachers the more it appeals to me. I always thought I would be a college professor, but it turns out academia is not for me.

My favorite teacher will always be my Montessori teacher. He taught me to read and do math and made me love school at a young age.

I somehow knew you would love the Starbursts in my giveaway. Thanks for entering! Good luck!

At least you figured out you wanted to be a teacher before the END Of college. I started thinking about it my last semester of college, and didn't go for it until half a year after I graduated. What a wonderful waste of college… acquiring a degree I'll never use!

Hmm. I need an elmo pinata for my classroom now. I teach kinder so it's less weird.:p

I was always "dear abby" with friends – giving counsel and solving the world's problems. It was easy to figure out I should be a therapist when I grew up:) It fits me like a glove – I love learning about people, their stories, why they are the way they are, etc. I think I will always be a therapist. When I had my daughter four years ago, I knew I didn't want to work full-time and let someone else raise her. So,I quit my full-time job to be a stay-at-home mommy and haven't regretted it one day. I work part-time now and have a great balance to life.

My favorite teacher of all time was Mr.Tiner, my sophmore English teacher. He was such a goof ball. He would come to class dressed up as different characters. All the students would try to get him to break character, but he never would. He didn't care if students thought he was stupid or silly – he would go wo whatever means necessary for students to learn. I learned a lot from him.

Gaaah I still don't know what I want to do with my life! In about 2 years I will be Dr. SeeAliEatSeeAliRun (as in PhD) but the more I think about it the more I actually want to be the real Dr. (MD). I must be insane. I will be in school FOREVER

That is really cool to hear about your history and how much you love teaching!

I loved my math/geometry teacher in HS because he CARED, and put his heart into teaching., He wasn't bad looking either.jhaha ;)

It took me 3 different universities, 4 changes in my major (ended with the one I started out doing) & only SEVEN years to graduate. I didn't know what I wanted to do. Now I have a BS in Nutrition…but I'm not doing anything with it.

So, now I'm working on becoming a personal trainer & after I have all the kids I want to have & they are old enough to go to school, I think I will pursue a masters in Physical Therapy. Hows that for a lan!!

At 40 I'm still figuring it out – smiles! Great post and blog. This is my first time here … looking forward to coming back.

Do you teach at a private school? Just wondering because out here in public CA schools in order to teach high school you would have to have a history credential… and 99% of our school don't offer drivers ed, unfortunately. It's always interesting to see how different states do it!

I just switched my majors from math education to nutrition. I decided I really just didn't care for math anymore…it's a shame because we could have been besties at school and eaten salad and pancakes and not judged each other!

Reply

I really just went with the flow until I figured it out and I'm still not really sure…I'm taking a semester off right now because I was really unhappy at the school I was at and I had no idea what I wanted to do. Since being home I've rediscovered my passion for food and cooking and now I'm going to culinary school in the fall. Big change from a pre-law/theology major! Other than that I want to be a momma :)

My favorite teacher was Dr. Marc Guerra because he's brilliant and really dry and sarcastic…usually I don't get humor like that but for some reason we got along great!

Very cool post Janae. I think this is my favorite one ever :)

I KNOW you are the best teacher ever, because you are the best person ever. I just love you to death and can't wait to see you tonight! I hate that I can never comment any more because I am always reading on my phone. Just know that i'm always reading and loving every minute of it! I hope your leg is healing up. Love you darling! xoxoxo

This is awesome to me because I am planning on majoring in nutrition and thinking about becoming a teacher!

Is anyone else teaching for the free Chick Fil A during teacher appreciation week? (going on this week- free lunch and dinner items!) As a teacher myself, I definitely had no clue whatsoever about what I wanted to do- I dappled in public health (yay nutrition, and childhood nutrition at that!) and went to med school for a while, and I have to say that teaching will never be boring, and that it is what you make of it. That is, if you choose to make it fun, relevant, and interesting for kids, they will have fun, and you will too, and the opposite is true too.
Happy teacher appreciation week!

I think I have always known that I wanted to teach little kids, but I also have a strong desire to be a personal trainer. I have looked into getting my degree in personal training on the side. I just love the schedule of teaching, being in the classroom and being able to call my own shots, also having the summer and holiday breaks off are of course a major plus!

This is an easy question to answer and a good one for me to reflect on: After my sophomore year in college, I was confused and wayward (major-wise), so I dropped out and went to Africa with a not-for-profit healthcare organization (Mercy Ships). I realized while watching the nurses at work that THAT was what I wanted to do – help others in moments of crisis, with a side of adrenaline rush for me on occasion. I loved every minute of being a neonatal intensive care nurse, stepped away from that when mommy-hood arrived, and now I love the flexibility that nursing allows (to bring in some money but be home fulltime with my kiddos = priceless).

Reply

in case it wasn't obvious – I did got back and finish my degree in nursing. I'm not out there placing IVs in babies with no training/licensure!

I love teaching also. I realized I wanted to do it while on an internship at Disneyworld (yes, I worked at disney!). I volunteered to read to Make a wish children and worked with them for the day. I came home, switched majors and have had my license in regular and special ed ever since. I teach 4th and 5th grade self-contained…really tough but so rewarding!! Teach on..and love the post because we are not just only about running!!!

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! Who said we looked alike?! I want to find them and kiss them! That made my night, Janae. :D (Even if you did spell my name wrong). tee hee hee

And yes, I do read almost every post. I quit when I see you're listing how many veggies you ate that day though. I don't need the guilt coming at me from the blog world too.

p.s. Your students are dang lucky to have you. To stay so upbeat when you have SO MUCH on your work plate is NOT easy.

p.p.s. I feel honored to be one of your faves, because I happen to know first hand that you had some amazing teachers.

Reply

you can get a minor in drivers ed? You're my hero.

I majored in women and words (no joke, womens studies and english), but I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up.

My favorite teacher was Rhoda Janzen, she was my english prof all through college. She has an incredible life story and has written some seriously awesome books (check out Mennonite in a Little Black Dress). I love her. She was both a great teacher and a role model.

I think it's really cool that you teach health & really seem to love your job. I'm a nutrition major too, and I would love to focus my degree on working with kids. Healthy kids are happy kids!
I'm still trying to figure out my career plan, but I would love to go to grad school for public or international health focusing on maternal/child health. That may change though!

I love teaching. I always wanted to be a teacher, but tried to deny it for a couple of years. I can't imagine doing anything else with my life!!

What an inspirational post Janae! I know you have to be a favorite among students past and present at your school and to figure out a way to combine all your loves into one occupation?! Awesome!

Just think of how many lives you are impacting on a daily basis!

I fell into college advising because I knew I valued higher ed and wanted to give back. When I transfered to Stanford, my advisor was huge.

I originally was a nutrition/exercise science major and am still considering studying it in the future. I miss being active daily FOR my job! :)

Hope you are continuing to heal and get that famur strong as steel!!!

I have 2 favorite teachers–both from 8th grade. I'm 25 now and I still meet up with them at least twice a year. :) They were amazing.

cool story :)

my favorite teacher, at least one of them, was mr. meister. he taught US history & international relations (jr & sr years of HS). he was a great teacher because he made history fun. he really challenged us to think. he also predicted 9/11…it was pretty crazy stuff. what a great man!

I always wanted to be a Mom since the time that I was young. I thought for a minute that I might want to go into nursing or dental hygiene, but just never did. Now I get to stay home with my 4 beautiful children and I would never change it! :)
I admire you for being a teacher. When I go in to help in my kids classes that are in 1st & 3rd grade, I go CRAZY! The kids are great but I DO NOT have the kind of patience that it takes to be a teacher.
My most favorite teacher was in 1st grade, Mrs Richardson…she was AMAZING! I just remember her being so sweet and loving to every child in our class. My boys have had some pretty fabulous teachers too – you teachers have a tough job and it's so refreshing to see when it is done with grace.

I'm like Kiley above- several universities and years before I finally got my degree and JD. But now I want to go back and get a degree in physical therapy, as well as a personal trainer certification. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!

I'm still figuring it all out! Part of the journey, I guess. :) I loved my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Beck. She was probably your age and I thought she was the coolest person in the whole world.

I'm a sophomore (almost junior!)in college and I'm definitely trying to figure it out. It's tough to find the perfect job that balances doing what you love and actually making a living. But I guess it's all a part of the journey.

My favorite teacher was Mrs. Vitvitsky in high school. She showed me how to appreciate literature and actually read for the beauty of the words.

And I would've loved to have you as my teacher, Janae. I know I'd look forward to your period every single day :D

awesome!! I bet all the kids love you!! You probably would have been my favorite teacher if I had you as a teacher ;)

It's awesome to finally realize what your calling is in life… and to go with it… Now that I'm going to school for what I actually want to do, I am so excited!! :)

I think that's how you know when you're doing what you were meant to do… it's exciting, fun, you feel like you're making a difference, and helping people… it may not always be easy, but its so worth it in the end! :)

I knew I wanted to be a physical therapist when I landed in PT my freshman year of high school with back spasms from over doing it at cross country practice. Four years of HS and four years of college later, I still wanted to do it. We are now another 4 years out and I have been practicing a year and I still love it. Guess when you know, you just know.

Kudos for your career choice. I totally agree that anything which provides more opportunities for Cafe Rio is worth pursuing.

I wanted to be a movie star. And a mom. I got one of 'em ;-)

My favorite two teachers were Mr. Lura in 5th and 6th grade… so much good energy and such a creative classroom style. Made everyone excited about school, and Mr. Coleman who totally believed in me in high school math. He convinced me to double up on math classes and take the "hard" teacher because he was better. He was right. It was all awesome.

I've bounced around so much with my majors and career plans. Since childhood, it's looked something like this: teacher, zoologist, performing arts, teacher, OB/GYN, human rights lawyer, midwife, primatologist, journalist, and teacher again.
But now, I'm starting to really settle down with the idea of an exercise science degree. Though zoology would still be really cool… LOL. Obviously, I'm just a tiny bit indecisive!

I know I want to do something with writing…I just don't know where yet. It's kind of a scary feeling considering I will be in the "real world" in a week, but I know I have to figure it out sometime!

I guess I really knew when I was in my first year of college that I wanted to be a designer. I began sewing at a young age but didn't think of it as a living until I got older. But I always thought I would just work for a designer, not actually own my own company. But it is great and I love it!

My favorite teacher was Mrs. D for my economics class. She was totally awesome!

It must be so much fun to teach. I think I would really enjoy it.

I think it's awesome that you're a teacher!!! I know I wanted to be a social worker since I was in high school. My parents got divorced my freshman year of high school and I got really sad about it so I went to a counselor and she was a social worker. She helped me out so much that I decided I needed to do that for others. It was an easy choice!!

My favorite teachers were Ms. G who was my college algebra and trig teacher in high school. She was so funny and helpful. My other favorite teacher was my 8th grade english teacher, Mrs. Wickham. She was completely awesome and I even babysat her kids!!

I'm in school right now to get my Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education. I can't picture myself as anything but a teacher. I love working with the students, and teaches have always had such a positive impact on my life that I want to return the favor.
My favorite teacher from high school was Kevin Degnan. He was an English teacher and was always encouraging us to be free thinkers. He's definitely the reason I went into teaching.
And in college Tim Parrish was the greatest mentor I could have asked for.

I'm not doing anything even remotely like what I thought I would be doing for a living. All though school I wanted to be a vet. But I was stupid and got married right out of high school instead. I only have a two-year degree from a piece of crap little community college. After I got divorced I planned to go back to school (at the age of 24) and start all over, and then I got a job at the post office. I took the job instead of going back to school. It all seemed to work out because I've worked my way into management as a Postmaster now, but who knows how long that will last with the way this company is going. I swear if anything happens to this job, I'm going back to school to do what I've always wanted to do.

I loved working with high school students when I taught Spanish! I miss that part of teaching. I don't think I will go back though because the area I live in is so anal about so many ridiculous things that I felt like I was an admin assistant and not a teacher anymore. But I loved reading your reasons for teaching and can relate to them so well.

I wish you were my kid's teacher. You would be so fun!
I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. It gives me stress sometimes especially since the youngest is about to start kindergarten. My favorite teacher was my 4th grade and my 6th grade teacher Mrs. Grant. She loved Egypt and showed her slides from when she visited. She made me want to be an archaeologist.

I didn't know you taught high school! I do, too!

My favorite teacher was my high school bio teacher. She made me want to do science!

I subsequently got two degrees in science going towards a career in lab research before I recently opted to switch over to fitness. Eh, oh-well!

The martial arts are intended to teach self-defense, self-control, and self-confidence.

To take matters into her own hands and figure how to
get herself that ring. If you have any kind of doubt
in selecting which one is suitable for your home decor then you need
to consult with an interior designer or make some research
on internet or checkout multiple interior design magazines and newspapers.
