My Challenge for US!!!!

As I was standing in front of the mirror at pump class this morning waiting until the legs section was done so that I could start my upper body workout, I started picking my self apart.

I started thinking…….

-Your runner leg muscles are atrophying

-Why does my skin resemble that of dipping it straight into the fryer at Wendy’s?

-And the whole free haircut, due to the large amounts of chlorine in the pool, is just not working on you.  (I do wear a swim cap and put conditioner on my hair before I put my cap on but it is still doing some major hair breakage).

As much as I tease myself on the blog and in real life about my big head, my abuse of self-tanner and greasy hair…..I actually think those things are funny and I don’t really think twice about it.  The real hurt occurs when I start picking myself apart in front of the mirror about things that I focus in on that no one else notices, I hope at least:)

It doesn’t matter how many people give you compliments or how awesome everyone else thinks you are, you will never believe them until you truly think that way about yourself.

I know you have probably seen this sort of thing on a lot of blogs, but we can never do it too much! As women we tend to get so down on ourselves, today is the day to change that awful habit.

On the count of three I want you to say out loud one of your most favorite physical features about yourself (I promise that your co-workers will only think you are a weirdo for a few minutes after you yell out MY LEGS)…..and no one is allowed to think that there isn’t anything, because you better believe I will make you skype with me so I can tell you all of the amazingly gorgeous and wonderful things about you!!!

1……..2………3………….MY BICEPS!!!

I am loving all the lifting and swimming I am doing and how they are shaping my arms to be strong and they may help me be able to finally beat my mom at an arm wrestle.  Definite improvement people:)

Most of you reading this blog have mastered the self-discipline it takes to workout like tigers and feed your body a lot of nutritious foods, my challenge for all of us is to use that same self-discipline that we know we have and channel it into thinking positive about ourselves.  Time to focus in on our favorite things about ourselves rather than focusing on the negative!

It only takes 21 days to form a habit and just think about how much all of these positive, happy thoughts about ourselves will impact the rest of our life/family/friends for the better…..especially those little one’s in our lives that hear everything we say about ourselves.  Let’s start them off on the right track and help them to see the best in themselves by being good examples of loving ourselves.

Tell me AT LEAST one of your favorite things about yourself!!!

What habit have you formed recently that you are PROUD of?

-Spending time each day reading religious stuff and flossing all of the sugary goodness off of my teeth daily.

Those are some killer biceps, girl! Rock em!

Thank you for this post. I catch myself trying to pick myself apart in the mirror sometimes, and I definitely need to make a conscious effort to stop before it starts a downward spiral.

I think this post about made me cry. Seriously, all I ever do is pick myself apart. I took down my full-length mirror because I just couldn't stand looking in it.

Once I finally get into the habit of getting up early to run I'll be proud of a habit ;) But, uh, that's not going so well…

My favorite thing about me is my love for laughing! :) SO MUCH FUN!!!

and I LOVE this post! I get so sad when I see little girls obsessing about their bodies…they are getting younger and younger! we need to be better role models!!!

Reply

My legs! You are spot on here Janae. Way to use your influence to empower all the women that read your blog. Especially the LARGE amount of YOUG women in their 20's, who struggle with these things the most. You're awesome! And yes, looks like those biceps are coming along nicely! woot woot! You go girl!

Reply

My flat tummy! And my legs aren't half bad.

The best habit I've gotten into lately is cooking more and eating less meat. Still seriously considering going vegetarian.

Reply

Amazing post!!! :D I like my eyes because they're green like my mom's but have brown like my dad's!
habit: doing strength training 5 times a week to help put some muscle mass on!!!!!

Reply

yay for this post! Love it!

Reply

Love this! I love my red hair, and my upper body – I used to be so weak but now can do real boy pushups.
New habit: Trying to form the habit of doing lifting/strengthening on a regular basis. I even did an awesome weights workout today.

First – You hit the nail on the HEAD when it comes to setting a good example for the little ones. I grew up with a mother who constantly criticized herself and picked herself apart based on her appearance and I fell into the habit too. I'm slowly breaking it and I hope that if I'm blessed with my own daughter one day, I can teach her to LOVE herself inside and out!

SECOND – New habits:

– Exercising for the way it makes me feel rather than how many calories it burns
– RACES! Just did my first half and I am addicted. Booked my next race and in the process of booking two more halves for this year!

Reply

Good post!
I'm super proud of my legs for all the running they do and my back and shoulders. When I workout I notice results there first.
Habit: keeping my house cleaner, doing a little each day instead of a lot on the weekends

Reply

you do have great biceps janae! i'd have to go with my shoulders. i call them my yoga shoulders. and, i'm really proud of myself for getting back into the habit of tracking my food. it's not always easy but for me, it's really important. thanks for asking!

New habit: eating greens and re-introducing chocolate and candy into my life! I deprived myself for way too long!

Reply

I have pretty killer arms and calves.
I am proud that I started flossing my teeth. And it paid off – my last checkup was awesome. I think the hygenist wanted to give me a gold star.
I am also working hard on reading my scriptures every night.

Reply

I love my eyes!

No new habits really…

I loved this post! And I really love your blog. Thanks for rockin out and keeping it real :)

Reply

Perfect post! It really is hard to focus on the positive (esp when your face is being attacked by mountain-sized pimples–hello, hormones) but what always pulls me out of my funk is focusing on all that I do have–I have my health, a roof over my head, and the man that shares my bed is someone I'm madly in love with. Sadly, some people will never have those things. I also always think about people that will never have a hot shower, and I make sure to enjoy mine that much more.

My favorite feature is my lips.

Habit I'm trying to create is working out regularly

Reply

As always Janae you are da bomb diggity!!! You are such an inspiration and you really know how to relate to your readers and make us feel good! I hope to impart that same message on my blog!!!
I love my legs, all my years of swimming have given me great strong, muscular legs!!!
New habit… running long distances and training! I just conquered my first half something I thought I could never do! The strength and empowerment I feel after running it is amazing!!! And now I cant wait for my next one!!!

I love this post. It's great to be reminded that we need to be kind to ourselves :)

I love that I am outgoing and love meeting new people. Physically, I also like my biceps! :)

Habit: No more fear foods! Eating whatever I want, when I want. No bingeing. No restricting. It's a good one!

I am proud of myself for staying on a good workout regimen, sometimes you fall off and just dont feel like doing anything, but I have learned that the more exercise you do on a consistent basis the better you feel!

Reply

favorite thing: my eyes

-Proud of myself for- getting back to running fairly consistantly after a winter of nothing and juggling it with my kids schedules, etc..and being better about daily scripture reading.

Reply

I'm loving my arms/shoulders I've been lifting weights 2 times a week along with doing pushups the days I don't lift for a month and a half now and I can really see a difference. I finally am getting smaller more toned arms, which mean bye-bye manly swimmer arms I used to have.

Reply

check out your guns!!! Looking good!!

I'm loving my calves lately. They look KILLER when I wear heals…though they are starting to bust out of my skinny jeans. Oh well, they're awesome.

Reply

This post is so so wonderful! I sent you an email with a poem I wrote about this exact subject. It's so great when we can just embrace ourselves and love our bodies for the amazing things that they are : ) But yes, something I love about myself? My eyes. They are not just brown but more of a golden honey color. Also I love my hair, it's silky and shiny and even if it's always in a ponytail I still love it.

Habit I'm proud of? running again after having my 3rd baby. He's 4 months old now and I'm finally getting back into my groove. My first post baby 5K is this Saturday and I can't wait!

Reply

Hm. My calves. :) I don't like those questions, though!

Your arms are looking goooood. !!!
Great challenge. :)

One of my least favorite feature about myself is the feature that everyone likes….FRECKLES. My goal i to learn to love them. My favorite feature are my legs. I have some nice leg muscles :)
A habit I have had for the past couple weeks is getting ice cream almost everyday on my way home. I love that I can allow myself to have it and not feel like I just gained a pound. Life is better with ice cream in it.

I have a love/ hate relationship with my height. ^_^ Habits…uh…cutting down on internet time when I'm supposed to be studying.. *logs off*

Reply

I am so on board with this. So awesome, Jenae.
i,2,3 I like my hair!
It has grown so muh more healthy.
PS- I swim everyday and yes it's damaging. Try Paul Mitchell Number Three. It's not that priey but I bet you could get your Mom to buy you some (they have it at SuperCuts) if you do some chores.
Or just write the company and tell them a gazillion people read what you write.

Reply

I would say my thighs…they are strong and even though I had to bring them back to their strong shape twice due to atrophy (two separate ACL tears) and I still get comments about how I must be a runner because my quads are so great…they used to make me really self conscious actually, because they were always a little big for my body (12 years of gymnastics will do that I guess) but now I have been trying to embrace them for the strong and toned benefits they are :)

One habit I am proud of recently? Trying to think more positively – I tend to think more on the glass half empty side, and I have made a conscious effort to think of the positives of life…

Reply

awesome biceps and post hah! my favorite part of myself are the new muscles in my legs from running so much, they make me happy. and i love the freckles that pop out after a long run outside too!
something i'm proud of is being OK with tapering right now before my marathon. it feels GOOD to relax :)

Reply

I like my eyes…

Something I'm proud of? laughing more- being willing to be silly.

Reply

I really like my arms, they have always been thin so muscle shows up easily on them :) A habit I am proud of is getting out after school every day and talking my puppy on a walk. A lot of times I am selfish when it comes to exercise, why do it if I am not breaking a sweat. I now enjoy these walks with Cooper and it is fun to not always feel the need to have to push it with whatever I do.

Reply

My curly hair. Used to hate it and straighten it all the time, but since moving to humid Texas I've come to appreciate it. New habit is changing my eating behaviors and thoughts to healthier ones! I've also learned to love pilates. Awesome post!

Reply

I am totally going to be doing a post soon about the things I like about my body, I've been thinking about it for a couple of weeks now!! I'm so glad you did it. When I get started, I can actually think of lots of things… one being that I love that my skin tans easily and I don't tend to burn too easily except on my face. Like you, I love being tan! I feel so bad for my friends who are so pale that they just burn all the time.

A healthy habit is the habit of regular workouts. I've been trying since October and it's just been in the past 2 or 3 months that I've finally got a routine down.

Reply

I'm proud of my legs! Muscles are popping up that never existed and that makes me so happy!

A healthy habit for me lately is the push-ups 3 times a week at night. SO proud to be sticking with it.

My work ethic is something I am really proud of. When I want something, I work super hard to get it.

Healthy habit is incorporating more core work in to my workouts :)!

I'm so glad that you find something you love about yourself. I'm proud of… my eyes. I love having blue eyes. And habit… running! Even when I hate it, even when I suck at it..

I love my eyes! They are deep brown and almond-shaped, inherited from my gorgeous mama.

I made flossing a habit after a bad dentists visit last year – but when I saw her again a few weeks ago she gave my teeth an A. :P

what a post for today…as I was setting up to teach my step class today I did just that….stood at the mirror and picked at my legs…and then my tummy, and then my freckles…
So wish I could love myself more.
I like my wrists…(I know its a stretch)

I am awesome at working longer and harder than anyone I know

I love my curly hair! It took me a long time to accept it, but now I totally embrace it. I also love how toned my shoulders are lately. (thanks for making me think of that :)

I'm a control freak when comes to my "daily routine" everything has to happen in a certain order in a certain…I promise you I'm not a complete crazy person. I get anxious when it does go as plan but I'm learn to accept and not freak out if things are not exactly as I planned.

Reply

I love my eyes. And oddly enough, my feet. :-)

I'm in the habit of being more conscious of my spending. Really trying to save up for that house!

Reply

Thank you for this… it was exactly what I needed to read this week. =)
As much as I complain about them when trying to find jeans that fit, I love my legs. They are muscular and strong and can propel me high into the air when I skate and give me power and strength to stand tall and strong. I also love my abs.
I like my new habit of conquering my fears- its been a year of big changes and I am working on living with less anxiety and more fearlessness. I am also learning to trust again after an incident that left in shattered. It's a process but it is something I work on every day.

Reply

What a cute idea. I love my smile and long, healthy hair. And, I love the dedication and ability to go with the flow that I have developed in the last few months. I'm becoming a much different person and I love it!

Reply

I love my strength. For not doing enough weight lifting, I am always amazed at what I can do. I can throw down with the guys!

I'm in the middle of forming a habit of smiling more. As silly as it is, a smile not only brightens your day, but those around you. Half the time I feel like a freak with this smile plastered on my face, but it isn't a frown and that is all that matters to me!

Reply

Your arms are so serious!!! My face is also my arms…I mean really…who would want to mess with them???. Haha! Loved seeing you twice in ONE day…my favorite! Let's hang out again soon :)

Reply

i would have to say arms and back too! i took all my taper energy out on them and during time off from these silly injuries. it is great to take time to focus on another area and make it a positive thing instead of negative.

Reply

Favorite thing… My thighs! They still have cellulite on the back, but they are the strongest they have ever been and are getting pretty damn toned, too! Though my calves are a damn close second. LOL

New habit… yoga. Many days I think about how bad I am at it, and I want to skip it… but then I make myself do it and I realize "Hey! I'm actually slowly getting more flexible and gaining some balance… Cool!"

Reply

Wow, Janae, this was so much harder than I thought it would be! I think that reveals a lot about my outlook on the world, and what I should start to work on!

I love my height – I'm 5'10", and I think it's pretty great! A habit I'm proud of…trying to cook a new different recipe every week!

Reply

I'm not going to lie to you Janae. My achilles has been bugging me and I haven't been running as much. I mostly feel like I'm getting soft. I've also had a few too many visits from the 28-year-old puberty gods lately (i.e. super acne). But if I must…1…2…3…my…uh…stomach.

Oh you are the BEST for writing this post! I thi k every woman and even young girls have the problem of "fighting with the mirror" as my husband would say… We need to start a habit of looking at the beauty in ourselves.. If compliments are too hard at first, start out with something like.. I am thankful for my legs and the places they take me each day..

I love my red hair, and my strong body when I am healthy.

My habit I am trying to form again, is eating good balanced meals.. Meaning carbs, protein and fat at each meal so I can get up to my healthy weight!

Reply

I will begin by saying that I love my eyes. That being said, I am also working on this and I think we always will. There is a blog entry written by a dad that put this into perspective for me and I think every parent and teenager should read it…seriously! The first time I read it, I cried and thought seriously about myself. Now, I have it bookmarked and when I am having a rough time in any way, I will go back and read it and will again cry and reflect but feel better about myself after. To read it, search "The Disease Called Perfection" or just follow the link.

I love how you kept this in a positive note, it needs to happen for more people!

Gosh, this is hard! I love….my arms! They carry around my one year old all day, and I am liking my new arms :)
I am sloooowly cutting out refined sugar in my life, so that's a good habit I guess.

"It doesn't matter how many people give you compliments or how awesome everyone else thinks you are, you will never believe them until you truly think that way about yourself."

(I say this to my boyfriend all the time! )

I know this sounds terrible but I often tell him to not compliment me because I don't believe it. It's SO true that until I start feeling good about myself, I will never believe anybody else's compliments.

Reply

I love this post! I know that every woman really needed to read this (especially me). I have to remind myself to look in the mirror and tell myself that I am beautiful! I am made in God's image and in His eyes I have no physical flaws.

The best thing I like about myself is MY LONG LEGS and MY HAIR!
Enjoy your day!!!

Biceps here too! :) Also I do have some rockin' strong legs!

Thanks for the reminder to love myself.

Awwww, I love you, Janae! I've gotten into the habit of NOT blow-drying my hair. Good for the hair, not always for my looks. My arms and shoulders are getting stronger from yoga, and I'm liking the way the look lately. :)

Reply

I like my eyes…even if they aren't very good at seeing more than 6" in front of me.

As far as habits go, the fact that I exercise more than once a month now is a HUGE improvement!

Reply

Janae I really love this post and you are right, it is so incredibly important that we act as role models to the next generation of young women so that maybe one day girls (and boys) will grow up in a world that doesn't mess you up about your looks or judge every book by its cover.
I love my…BACK! It is strong and looks pretty darn good in a bathing suit too! and I love my eyes because they are like my Daddy's and they let me see this beautiful world!
My new habit – making my bed every day. Sure it's a skill that I should have mastered in primary school but I'm a slow learner, what can I say?

Reply

My long muscular legs… they get me where I need to be :)

Reply

Best post ever!
I love my legs. Because a) they are strong and powerful and allow me to run and walk and bike and generally kick butt, and b) they are hot :p

I also love my eyes and eyelashes :)

Andddd i'm (beginning) to love my arms… slowly building up some muscle from incorporating a little more strength training (which is my most recent habit i'm proud of!!).

Reply

Here's a challenge that I face daily! My boyfriend always gets on me about beating myself up, but I'm working on it!

I absolutely love my eyes… and this might sound odd, but I think I have cute toes. And I think my hair is gorgeous and shiny… well, it's gorgeous and shiny when I wash it, so… once a week.

And I'm proud that I have gotten back to running three times a week! I know I'm getting a lot stronger and I'm pretty sure I'm wheezing less, ha!

Reply

Not sure if you've tried it, but I havea a suggestion for the swimmer's hair damage – a shampoo & Conditioner called "Ultra Swim."

I used to use it back in my swim team days because it was the only thing that would get rid of the ever present chlorine smell on my body. The girls would use it because it kept their hair from turning colors over 6 months of swim practice.

Reply

My eyes!! I am excited about my new journey/commitment to my running this year. Next year by this time I will have ran my first half-marathon.
