I can’t even tell you how happy I am about what I am about to tell you, but first let’s start with some background.

Wedding 6921

I love this pic not only because of my dadio but my mom and MIL are in the back and look so gorgeous.

Being a health teacher and taking many classes in college about chronic disease I have always been very concerned about my Dad.  He has a heart of gold and I want him to be around FOREVER!!

Two weeks ago he went to the hospital and his bp was 196/115 and he was in a lot of pain.

I think this was a major wake up call for him and he has decided to change his life around.  This time it is going to stick because he is doing it for HIMSELF rather than what other people want him to do (aka me and my mom putting him on a meal plan and exercise routine)!!!!

After 2 weeks of 6 meals a day of 400 calories or less, at least 6 hours of sleep a night (lets just say he was getting probably half of that), exercising 40 minutes a day (with a heart rate monitor staying within the range of 121-134) and lots of prayers and hugs from the family his bp is now down to 138/80 and he has lost TWELVE LBS!!!!!

He has gone from 292 lbs to 280 lbs.  PS I asked permission to write all of this and boys really don’t care if people know there weight…..um, just a little different from girls:)

We could not be more proud of him and do you wanna know the best part…………..

Those 40 minutes of exercise everyday are RUNNING…..he is doing a 12:30 pace and LOVING IT!!! I have NEVER seen my dadio run and the thought of him finding joy in my most favorite thing makes my eyes tear up.

Can’t wait until I am back in the game and you better believe I will be running on my recovery days with him!!!

IMG 6053

Now let’s talk about food.  PS my dad’s favorite meal of the days is his 8 o’clock ginormous salad the size of his head……I think I may be rubbing off on him:)

On Friday night we went to my favorite restaurant Cafe Rio and got our normal salads.  My stomach would not allow the tortilla to enter and so I took it home with the leftover dressing and recreated the salad for lunch today.  I threw in lettuce, salsa, carrots and tuna and loved every bite.  Pretty sure it isn’t normal to be looking forward to your leftovers as much as I did with this one.

————————————————————————–

Any words of encouragement for my Dad to keep him going on running and healthifying his life?  Any personal stories of how you, friends or family got healthier and into fitness?

Do you get excited about leftovers?  What is your favorite leftover?

-There is nothing like leftover Thanksgiving food and turning into a turkey/cranberry/stuffing sandwich:)

Hmm inspiration? Men lose weight so much easier than women! You're so right… it sticks when he is ready to make the change. Couldn't be prouder of your pop! I started at 293 too and it is hard work, but claiming a healthier life is the best thing I ever did for myself and my family. Goooo pops!

Congrats to your dad! That is so awesome.

I've been trying for years to get my family healthier. My little sis has finally started to get into working out & has lost some weight.

My older sister has quit smoking and started running. I even convinced her to come out from Kansas to run the Las Vegas Ragnar with me in October.

It's so hard to see people you love & want the best for not take their health seriously.

Seriously, that is AWESOME news. Not just because it's another person hooked on running and doing healthy things with their life, but because it's your DAD and you're inevitably getting even closer to him by sharing this with him.

So glad to hear he's doing well and that things are working for him. My dad walks, but won't touch a vegetable!

I'm also one of the "guys" as I don't care about my weight. I did, however, have a bit of a weight shock yesterday. Did you check my blog? Fifteen pounds just…gone!

Reply

I can't wait to see you guys run a 5k together!

Aww congrats to your dad! I know you are so proud of him! Tell him that the blog world is rooting for him!
I get excited for leftovers…I really love leftover lasagna…it is just better the next day for some reason!

That is awesome that hungryrunnerDad is taking his health into his own hands!! Keep it up :)

That is so incredibly awesome Janae!!! You should be SOO proud of your daddy :) My dad lost almost 80 pounds in like 6 months, but he was going through radiation and crap when he had his cancer before he lost his life to it. I sometimes like leftovers, but not usually!

Reply

Tell Dadio he really needs to be around to see his sweet girl (and his other kids) realize their dreams and grow families of their own! I know some of your sibs already have done this…but he needs to be around to see not only your sub 3 but the little Billsters and Janaebabies running around one day :) That is the saddest thing for me is that my dad didn't get to see me as a 'real' adult and my kids never got to meet such an awesome grandpa. Your Dadio NEEDS to be around for that … for you, for them and for HIM! Keep up the good work, Mr. Janae's Dad! You are doing it! You are making it happen :)

So happy for hungry runner dad! Keep up the good work.

Go Janea's Dad!!!

My mom, 10 years ago was an active person, who prided herself on being the sporty sister between her other two, found out she had such high blood pressure she needed medication. She thought how can this be?…….she wouldn't let it stop her and instead of just being active got competitive and last year made it to the Kona Ironman championship. She's amazing!

Favorite leftover: I think spaghetti tastes even better day 2.

That is so amazing about your Dad! Good for him! My dad went through something similar a few years ago, he had to have heart surgery and change his diet and start exercising, he's not running, but him and my mom walk every day. I'm just glad to see them get out and about. Tell your Dad to keep up the good work and maybe he should strive to run a 5k to keep him motivated!

So nice that your Dad is working so hard to get healthy and fit – he should be proud. You ALL should be proud. And how great that you are paying this lovely tribute to him.

Cheers!

That is great new about your dad. It's cool that he is running . Just goes to show that you are never to old to start running. That is awesome.

Reply

Congratulations to your dad!!

Only words of advice: When i was losing weight I also did it for myself, not because anyone else told me to, AND I had to keep reminding myself that I am THE ONLY PERSON who can make the decisions to keep myself healthy. I can't blame anyone else, or look to anyone else to make me do the things I need to do. It is only ME who can get myself healthy. Others can encourage us or compliment us, but it is only up to ME alone.

Reply

Oh yeah – and tell him to keep at it, because it only gets better :)

Men can drop weight pretty rapidly – when I first decided to live a healthy lifestyle I practically evaporated (50 in three months, I was a little concerned but it ended up being fine). Sounds like he's on the right track and that's always exciting.

Congrats to your dad! Running with him is something to definitely look forward to. :)

wow!!!! your dad rocks! That is really, really awesome! Running is SO difficult to get into…and I could imagine even more difficult when you are older. At the end of the summer last year my Dad and Mom both tried to work out more and eat healthier in an attempt to drop some weight. My Dad began running too and worked his way up to a mile which was huge for him ! Seeing my Dad running brought a smile to my face and tears in my eye so I know how you feel about your Dad running. Maybe you guys can train together for a 5K or something (once you're healed up!). so glad his BP is down and he is doing well!! :)

Wow wow WOW!!!! I have to comment on this post because I work as a health educator at the Y and work with people who have health scares just like this every single week… this is AMAZING!!!!!!!! And gives me chills!!! I'm so happy for your dad… that's so awesome that he is making this change for HIMSELF rather than because he is being told to do so. I truly think y'all are in for a new type of lifestyle coming from him!!! BTW, I absolutely LOVE you blog and have been reading backposts and i seriously think we were meant to be friends!!! You are such an awesome girl and sooo freakin' hilarious!! I see so much of myself in you (except, the whole being a fast-runner part… i'm more in pace with your pops!!but I did just run my first marathon the other week, woo! Maybe your daddy will, too :) )

This gave me chills! I'm so happy for your dad, and for all of your family because I know how important you are to each other! Inspiration for your dad? Seeing you and all of your family. My dad's been gone 12+ years. Didn't get to see my wedding (which he would have LOVED) and didn't get to see me in my "grown up life." And I miss him like crazy every day. Heart attack. Encourage him daily. And tell him you love him often. Now I need some kleenex :-)

That's awesome your dad is running & getting healthier – his bp before was a scary number. You definitely don't want to lose your dad early…I can tell you from experience. It sucks! Keep him running!!

This is absolutely wonderful news. When I ran my first 5k I was 30 lbs heavier and ran it in just over a 12:30 min/mile. A year and a half later my 5k PR is an 8:03 min/mile. Tell him to stick with it! The weight will come off easily and he'll get speedier without even trying!

I am SO happy for your dad! You hit the nail right on the head when you said that he is only doing it because of his own wanting. You can't force people to do something they don't want to!

Ditto on the turkey/cranberry/stuffing sandwich — better than the actual Thanksgiving meal.

Great news about your dad!

I am so proud of your dad, that is great! And you have just inspired me to have a talk with my mom that I have been wanting to have about her health. You are so right though, she needs to do it for herself and no one else, although I think being around for her two little granddaughters should be a great inspiration. Thank you!

Reply

So lovely! So happy for your dad! Prayer really does work wonders and I'm sure it will help as he continues his journey. Perhaps in terms of encouragement, other than his feeling much better, is not to think how much "easier" life will be, but how much more vibrant. Yes, pain will still be there, but without health concerns or physical discomfort, joy will be so much greater too. Other than that – the fact that there really is only one life to live and that he has such a wonderful family to live for – I really can't see any better reason to continue pressing on. Go Dad! <3

Congratulations to your dad!!!! That is very exciting!!!! For inspiration, you should definitely check out this amazing woman's blog. http://paulatraynor.blogspot.com/ She has lost over 130lbs and has been documenting her journey. Best part, she ran her first 1/2 marathon last month!!!! Who knows, maybe you and your dad will be running 1/2's or fulls together in the future!!!!

That is so fabulous about your dad!!!! Good for him!

I get way too excited about leftovers. I had some leftover Chinese today that I seriously thought about from the time I got up today until I finally ate it :) It was SO GOOD.

Aww, well done Big Poppa Janae! I am really really hoping my dad will do something similar as he has a lot of health problems, mostly related to being overweight, his diet, no exercise, high blood pressure, and scarily high cholesterol =( i worry a lot because i LOVEEEE HIMMMM like a crazy person.

My lil story… I was overweight my whole life. I was probably close to 200 pounds at my highest (when I was about 16). When I was 17, I began losing weight by changing my diet. Sadly, it ended up spiraling into an eating disorder that went on for years.
Then i changed my focus to FITNESS, and I now eat and train like an athlete. I'm about 125-130 pounds, run marathons, and generally kick booty ;)

Reply

Great job to your Dad! It's awesome! I just bought the book "The Courage to Start" by John Bingham for my father, and we have made plans to run the Las Vegas R'n'R half marathon together! Picking out a race (whether a big milestone 6 months from now) or a more reachable race in 4-6 weeks (maybe a 5K) is a great way to also make running a family activity! Run with yo' dad!

Reply

Congrats to your Dad! I'm sure that knowing he is on a path to a long healthy life which will include playing with Janae Juniors one day will encourage him to keep it up :)

I can tell you are very proud of him.

My dad just agreed to have the fam meet up in Vegas to watch me run the 1/2 instead of meeting up for Christmas so I'm super proud of him too. Haha.

My husband and I are really concerned about my FIL. He has absolutely no interest in exercise and eating healthy isn't his first priority. It's really difficult. We keep trying and hope that maybe someday he'll change his ways.
I love leftovers. I think leftover lasagna is one of my favorites. It seems like it tastes better to me the second day. Mmmmmm. :)

Tell your dad that all your readers are anxiously waiting for more good news on his health, running, and weight loss and he wouldn't want to let 1500 + people down would he? That's good motivation! He has a fan club now! Good for him with his success! I might have told you before, but my sis-in-law told me about your blog, so I'm a new follower. Your blog is so fun to read!

I'm sorry your Dad was in such a position, but it is wonderful news that he's doing so well and making such big changes so quickly! I always worry about my parents. I love them so much and can't imagine life without them. Congrats to your Dad, and you and your family for being so supportive!

This makes me SO SO happy!

At work at the hospital, I see people everyday who have bad health situations but who choose to do NOTHING about it to make themselves healthier. That's why I'm so happy and SO PROUD of your dad for choosing to make life changes that will impact him in a positive way. That is way harder to do than I can imagine.

And I LOVE leftovers. Anything as a leftover. It's all the deliciousness of a meal without any of the work of making it!

I totally share your excitement. My dad is an exercise nut, but he still put on a lot of weight over the last 10 years.

Since January, he went from 305 pounds to 235 pounds!!! that is 70 pounds. He has been doing nutrisystem, and walking 1.5 hours a day. I'm so happy, he looks like a new man

Yay for your dad! That is more than just good news, that is GREAT news. :)

Aw, that's so exciting about your dad! When I was a little kid I used to run with my dad (of course it was around the block and then he would drop me off back at the house and go to "cool down," which in reality was his real run;). But sadly, as I got older and he moved up in the ranks at work, with more responsibility came longer hours and longer commutes, and he stopped being active. I worry about him now, and hope he will get back into it at some point. He keeps saying he will "when the weather is nicer" or "when his knee is feeling better" etc, but like you said, I think they need to get to that point on their own!

Reply

That's so fabulous! Way to go Dad!!

My friend just lost 130 lbs!! I'm beyond proud of her and I can't even tell you the difference I see in her confidence level. She's a different person, but still the same in all the good ways.

that's wonderful news janae! you're so right, he needs to do it for himself and i'm so glad he's finally choosing HIM over some of the unhealthy habits he's developed. it's hard to watch people you care about not put themselves at the top of their priority list. i'm rooting for him to keep up the HARD work! he can do it.

Congrats to your dad!!! That's such an awesome accomplishment to turn eating, exercise and life habits around :)))

My dad quit smoking when I was little, and I know that that was a struggle for him. He tried multiple times to quit, and it probably took him at least three tries before he fully quit. He also stopped drinking any soda, and he used to drink a liter a day!!!

Reply

Wow, congratulations! I can totally relate with trying to get a loved one to start exercising b/c you are worried about their health…until they decide for themselves, it can be a worrisome and frustrating time for the loved ones! Way to go on taking those first steps!

Also, I am new to your blog, so I apologize if this has already been covered, but I have a question about your sister. The one you weight lift with (I don't know if you have other sisters or not) – is she also the mother of some of those cute little nieces and nephew that feature on your blog sometimes? Because if so….dang, she looks amazing! As in, would she be willing to guest post on getting in shape after babies? You are both so amazing, I love your blog!

Firstly, i'm sooo proud of your dad!!! 6 years ago this past week my dad suffered from a massive heart attack (strictly from genetic factors alone-he has a blood clotting gene) and since his near death experience he has been 110% committed to living the most healthy lifestyle possible and works out every single day and recently has started to jog (with his heart rate monitor on of course to make sure he stays in his healthy zone) and the most exciting news is that this upcoming Sunday we are jogging his first 5k together sponsored by the American Heart Association. Jogging side by side with him at such an event is going to be such an amazing feeling and I can't wait for this upcoming weekend!!!

Janae, I'm soooo happy to hear the great news about your "DADDIO!!" Power of Prayer!! :)

Yay Daddio! So happy and proud of his commitment. That is a fab pic of the two of you.

My fav leftover…meatloaf. (not so healthy huh?) You could put it on a salad ;-)

I think a great way to reinforce his achievements is to remind him that being healthier will keep him around so much longer, and that you want him there to see his future grand kids and go on family vacations, and make so many more memories! :)

Both of my parents really worry me, as neither of them is healthy at all. My dad kind of makes half-hearted attempts, but doesn't really get anywhere. I'm really glad that yours finally got that wake-up call he needed and is on the road to a healthier life!

my favorite leftover has to be chili! it only gets better with time!

i bet if you made him a mix cd every two weeks he would get super pumped about running! that is my favorite part! new music to pump me up!

SO HAPPY to hear about the great changes your dad is making and how much progress he's already made in such a short time! Good for him!! He used to run sub-6 min miles in college but hasn't run in years. Maybe I can use your story to motivate him! :)

That is so awesome about your dad! My mom has had a lot of weight related health issues and she finally got a gym membership and is paying for a personal trainer and a nutritionist to get her life back. She quit her job and spends 3 hours at the gym every day, kind of biggest loser style, slowly working her way back to a healthier body. Before she started she was told she had 42% body fat!! That's almost half of her body that was all fat. I don't know her stats now but I know that she lost 12 pounds in the first 3 weeks and has more energy now that ever. I'm so happy for my mom because I want her to be around to watch my kids grow up. She's always done so much for everyone else so I'm glad she's finally doing something for herself.

Oh, Awesome! I have tears in my eyes just reading about your father. I went through a similar situation with my mother. Running changed her life too. She got healthy late in life, lost weight and started running with me and my sister. After a scare several years ago, running and getting healthy prolonged her life 5-6 years, at least.

This is wonderful news about your father – props to him for taking care of himself and to you for supporting him! You are a beautiful person. He is more than lucky to have you, but I am sure he knows that!

I, very sadly and unexpectedly, lost my mother three weeks ago. I'm still reeling from it and the heartbreak that she was not there to run her first 1/4, witness my sister's first 1/2 or my fist full on Sunday. It has been a long long three weeks. She died while on a 4.5 mile training run a week before her goal race. We buried her in her running shoes the Monday after Easter.

I find joy in this post and the fact that someone else can do what my mom did and will be with you for many more years to come. Thank you for sharing.

I look forward to hearing more about the journey you and your dad are on together!!!!!!!
