Filling the Void.

A food baby was conceived this weekend, we are excited to welcome this new addition to the Jacobs family.

IMG 5133

We went over to the sissy’s house for tortilla soup (made with her new BlendTech), caesar salad and crescent rolls.

IMG 5134

Dinner was followed by making delicious homemade ice cream for the second night in a row.  No, this is not a 3d picture, I just have a long neck and wanted to jump out at you.

IMG 5144

Those kids are definitely related to me.   PS Billy, you need to work on your ‘silly’ face a little bit.

IMG 5142

While we waited for our ice cream to be made we read stories and made poor Billy’s legs fall asleep.  There was a whole couch not being used but it is way more fun to pile up on Billster

IMG 5147

We really outdid ourselves with this one.  We crumbled up Samoa’s to put in our ‘milkshake.’  I am telling you, if you come be my best friend in Utah I will make you food like this:)

Let’s talk about something..

I have definitely overdone it in the food area the past little while.

It is like I have tried to fill the void of losing running in my life with food.

I am not freaking out about the weight gain because honestly I needed a few lbs but I just don’t feel good.

Our bodies need nutrients and real foods and they get cranky when all we feed them is ice cream, hot dogs, burgers and sour patch kids. especially when I am 14 days away from RUNNING (hopefully) the Boston Marathon.

This week I am really going to focus in on eating foods that make me feel good.  If I am sad about not being able to run then I will turn to other ways for dealing with my emotions like writing, talking to Billy, crying or taking a bubble bath.

I just wanted to talk about something that has been bugging me and telling other people about it helps me to be more accountable.

There is no use regretting our actions or kicking ourselves for something that is already done, all we can do is move forward and try our hardest to learn from our mistakes and try to better ourselves.

So, if you have had a bad weekend, week, month or year of poor eating/exercise habits let’s all start today to treat our bodies the healthiest way possible mmkay?!?!  We are BEAUTIFUL, STRONG, TALENTED men and woman and our bodies deserve to be fueled with nutrient dense foods along with some delicious treats every now and then right?!?!

——————————————————————————————-

1.  Have you ever made homemade ice cream?

-Oh yeah baby and when we were kids we would do the kind that you roll back and forth for an hour……good memories:)

2.  What goals do you have for yourself this week?

-Drink more water, eat mis fruits and veggies more and take time each day to process my emotions instead of trying to mask them with a sugar/fried coating.

3.  WHO IS GOING TO BE IN BOSTON FOR THE MARATHON!?!?! Anyone want to know my bib number so that you can track me along the way???  Billy will also be using my twitter account to update you if you want to follow me that way.

I love you attitude. You can't go back and make a new beginning but you can always start now and make a new ending!

I've only ever made ice cream in middle school science class – it wasn't bad, but your's looks delish!

Totally hook us up with the bib number, it will give me something today while I sit in class for 9 hours!

You are doing a great job!!!! You'll be running in no time! Just remember that the better foods heal you body faster! Good luck in Boston!

Love homemade ice cream! Mint chocolate chip is a good one to try! We have an ice cream maker but we've also used the ball from lands end. Lots of shaking FOREVER before you get ice cream. But it's worth it!

I made a chocolate cake over the weekend and have demolished it! I too am going to try and eat better this week. Atleast try not to fill up on sweets and instead fill up on spinach, broccoli and anything else green! Plus some fruits in there. I have a 10K in 2 weeks and don't want to be sluggish b/c of my diet. Water, water, water!

Reply

Also, I always try and remember something Jillian Michaels always says as I'm about to eat something I might regret.

"don't undo all the work you just did!!!!"

Janae, you are just too sweet for words. This post is great.

Homemade ice cream takes me back to my child-hood. We used to make it all the time out on the back porch!

Several goals this week but the biggest is just to focus on taking care of myself…no matter what that looks like.

I so wish I was in Boston for the marathon! I can't wait to read recaps!

I definitely know filling the void. This past week while the baby (he is actually 4 years old!) was sick in the hospital I ate cheese burgers, french fries and diet soda daily. What the heck! That is not how I eat and if I do it is on a rare occasion not part of my daily diet! It was a stressful week but I do need to find better coping mechanisms. The baby is better and I feel motivated to make healthier choices!

Reply

I would LOVE to track you while you run! That would be super cool. Don't get too bummed, this only temporary. You're super strong!

Reply

I absolutely needed this post Janae! I ran my first half marathon yesterday and used it as an excuse to eat like crap for most of last week. Running was so hard and not fun when you don't fill your body with good food!

I'm starting today with you!

Reply

You have such a positive attitude about this. I definitely know about "filling the void." But you noticed and are doing something positive about it and that's awesome! Plus, you definitely need lots of goodness and nutrients to fuel Boston. There are a couple of people running Boston I will track–and you'll definitely be one of them!

Reply

My step mom makes homemade ice cream and it's soo yummy!! And heck yes I want to know your bib number lady!

Reply

Aww, this is such a good post, and its so tough to make healthy choices sometimes! On days when I do long runs/tough workouts, its easier to eat right because thats what my body is craving, but on rest days its like "whatever, your not running…" haha.

And YES to the bib number lady! I live in Boston and will be standing somewhere along the course screaming for you until I go hoarse! CAN'T WAIT.

Reply

I've definitely been doing a bit of "filling the void" lately, too. Can't change what I already did, but I can change what I do today! Thanks for the reminder :)

Reply

I want bib numbers so I can follow everyone while I am on a trip to Seattle.

I definitely feel better having broken my constant craving for sugar. I've been compromising with myself by throwing some chocolate chips into a Greek yogurt. Good luck getting back to healthy eating. Think about fueling for Boston the next two weeks so that when you get cleared to run you are all ready to go.

Reply

Another reason I love your blog! Even when you are frustrated or upset with current eating habits or injuries, you are able to remind yourself (and all of us) that it doesn't matter in the long run–we are all strong and beautiful! Keep working on that leg & stay positive (candy is too good to think negatively about it!)!

A bib number would be great! I'll be out watching on the course (probably within the last 6 miles of the course), and will definitely be cheering for you!

Reply

I completely agree, I love this post! I notice SUCH a difference in the way I feel – mentally, physically, and during workouts – when I overdo it too much. A food baby every once in a while though is well worth it :)

I'll be watching the marathon on and off throughout the day (I work by the finish line) so yes! I fully plan on probably bursting into tears for everyone who finishes (because I'm weird and get all emotional watching people I don't know cross the finish line) :)

Reply

I've had homemade ice cream before…sooo good! A friend of mine crumbled up some brownies in a batch once….heaven! :D
Good luck in Boston in two weeks!!!!!!

Reply

Okay – the milkshake looks TO DIE FOR, but I know what you mean. I need to be better about processing my emotions rather than covering them up with chocolate and french fries. :) I want to know your bib number! Text it to me!! :)

Last night I woke up repeatedly and all I felt were the bad food choices I made Sunday night. I'm training for a half ironman that's 9 weeks away. I don't need the extra pounds, though. But remember, "your body is a temple." And it deserves love and respect and not 2 servings of tortilla chips at 9:30 on a sunday night. Loved your post. And I can't tell you how many times I think about you lately and am sending well wishes that you can run Boston!

Reply

Janae, I can totally understand about "filling the void" with food. I'm happy you realize it and are going to start filling your body with good foods before Boston!

I'd love you bib number, I'm hoping to make it down to Boston for Marathon number, but if not I'll definately be watching anyways!

Reply

You said it girl! No point in being upset over what's already done, all you can do is move on and do better today!

I have never made homemade ice cream before, but I need to!

Reply

I think it's great that you are being honest with yourself about your emotions about not being able to run and how that's affected other parts of your life. The extra eating was probably good for your body, and no doubt you will feel better this week :)
I'm starting to get so excited (but also nervous) for Boston! Are you going to send out an email about the meet up sometime soon? I can't wait to meet you!!

Reply

You make my heart smile! What a great post and what great aunt & uncle. I am sure they adore you both! 1)I havent made homemade icecream since I was a kid…but summer is coming! 2)I changed my gym membership on Friday to one that is across the street from my work. Booyah! I am meeting with a trainer today! 3)I will follow your twitter. Go Janae!

I LOVE homemade ice cream and have not made it in forever which makes me totally sad. Also…I needed to tell you that it never even occurred to me to mix my cereals. Today I was in a dilemma because I wanted 2 different kinds. Then I remembered your post from yesterday…problem solved…I just had both mixed together :)

My goals this week are to stay positive and to continue to take one day at a time. I also want to keep staying focused on listening to my body to know how much to do rather than pushing myself too far too quickly.

Keep staying positive!! I know you are going to make the strongest comeback ever after this experience :) I DEFINITELY want to be able to follow you at boston!!!

Reply

Home made ice cream is soooo good!

My goals for this week: stretch more after running, eat more veggies and clean my apartment!!!

I won't be in Boston but my boss will be covering it for a magazine! I'm so jealous!!! You'll do great! I just know it :-)

Reply

When my cousins and I were little we made homemade ice-cream. I remember it being so fun and tasty!! :)

Goals this week: spring cleaning in my closet, my kids closets. Drink more water and vitamins daily!

You know I want to track you!! Won't be in Boston this year but, I WILL be there next year!! :)

HAVE A GREAT MONDAY PRETTY LADY!! :)

Reply

I want to follow you in Boston!!!! Janae – I know you are feeling bad right now, but I thought you should know, YOU got me through my FIRS-EVER 18 mile run on Saturday. I went out and thought POSITIVE the whole time (specifically 'you're the bomb.com') and I made it. You taught me about what a positive attitude can do for a run.

My goal this week is to be positive about all of my training runs and give it my best even when I want to let negative thoughts get in the way.

I just wanted you to know that even though you are not running right now, you still inspire others like me to run and reach their dreams. Just know I will be your biggest fan in Ohio when you are running Boston!!

Reply

I will be in BOSTON!! Are you coming to any of the blogger events? I hope so! I want to meet your smiley face and kick off a real live running friendship!

Reply

I've never made homemade icecream but am dying for a Kitchenaid Stand Mixer and you can BET I'll be making lots of ice cream once I get one!!

I'm treating myself REALLY WELL (food, exercise, sleep, etc) this week so that I'm as ready as I can be for my first half marathon on Sunday!!

Um, yeah! Send me your bib number-I will cheer you on as I cheer my boyfriend on! I am a great cheerleader :)

I so feel your void…it's hard and only natural to fill it with something. But I'm glad you recognize the need for good food instead. It WILL help with the healing too! Hang in there.

Hang in there – we have all been there :-) I'm such an emotional eater. And you're right, regardless of weight, it's just not a good habit. Just keep picturing your beautiful self at the finish line of Boston!

Being the stalker that I am of course I'm gonna track you. You are amazing and will rock it.
I already fulfilled my goal – my longest dreadmill run ever – 9 miles – to make up for no long run Saturday.

Reply

Thank you for this post Janae. I ate myself into a food coma this weekend and have been feeling incredibly guilty. I now feel like I can officially wipe the slate clean and start fresh. I just love you, have a fabulous week.

I cannot believe Boston is coming up so soon. I am so excited for you. I think now is the time to break down and start a twitter account just so I can stalk you. :)

Reply

I have actually been going through the exact same thing (note 2 jars of nut butter straight and two boxes of cereal up in one week… on top of everything else). let's get out fruit and veg in together this week beautiful lady!!

Reply

I think you've inspired me to buy an ice cream maker! Yum!!

Reply

1)I've had homemade ice cream when I was a kid, but not for a long time. I need an ice cream maker!
2) My goals for this week are to eat well & follow my guidelines on calorie intake & fruit/vegetables (I'm trying to lose weight) & to run 40 minutes without stopping. That's huge for me!
3)I'm not going to be in Boston (I'm running a 5K that weekend – baby steps!), but I'll be thinking of you!

i would love to follow you at boston! i just started my training for the rock and roll seattle half marathon, so now i'm totally addicted to anything running. i know you will do great in boston, keep it up!

I love making homemade icecream. My very favorite flavor to make is vanilla with graham cracker and banana chunks. It is amazing!
My one big goal for myself this week is to get better with workouts. I blogged about it this morning that I need more motivation!

I want to know your bib number!!

I am definitely guilty of filling voids with food…while doing it I feel better but then afterward I immediately regret it. But you're right – no use in worrying about whats done, just make a decision to live today healthier!

Reply

Please tell us your bib number so we can track you :)

I agree with your comment about not feeling your best from eating those foods. It's the reason I try to eat healthy- I feel much better! I eat enough for several people, but I don't get that gross feeling like I get when I eat too much junk. Although that does happen sometimes :)

Reply

I have made homemade icecream, but not gonna lie I don't really like it! Its too liquidy and melts to fast!!! My sister however loves it!

Surprisingly I have been eating very healthy lately, so I gotta keep it up!! :)

Reply

I just wrote a post about indulgent weeeknd eating too! haha. It is true that our bodies need to be fueled right to run right!

I love the crazy face picture!! Your nieces and nephew are adorable!!! How could you not be happy around them AND ice cream!! It's all relative, isn't it?

I want your BIB # AND I want Billy to be a tweetin' fool b/c I will be cheering you on!! Tweet, tweet Billy!

I know this running void has been such a challenge for you, but you have handled it with such poise and determination. So many of us have gone through or will go though injuries AND your actions show a great example of how to keep endurance and spirits up. Thinking of you!

I will be in Boston!!!! Let me know your bib number and I will cheer for you. I will also probably recognize you by the weird face you'll be making. :)

It's hard when you lose something for awhile that defines you, like running. You feel all out of sorts and just not like yourself, and it's easy for all your other habits to just kind of fall away too. Know that your readers are here for you and supporting you no matter what. Also – you are hilarious – your blog is one of the most fun for me to read. A good balance of food, exercise, and fun.

I love homemade ice cream – I've been making homemade ice cream like crazy lately!!

Don't be too hard on yourself- you are beautiful!! And I doubt it's even possible for you to gain weight with all your working out. I hope you can run Boston in 2 weeks!!

Reply

I gained 10 pounds in the two weeks since the LA Marathon! Some of the indulging was fun, but in the end I just felt nasty, so I agree, healthy foods just make you feel better. And they make ice cream and chocolate that much nicer when we have them!

i asked first for your bib number..way back when! so i want it FOR SURE!!!!

i am an emo eater too, it sux but it's great when we all come around and realize WHY we eat and why we eat WHAT we eat. cereal is my weakness tho..cocoa krispies…mmm

Sometimes knowing that you're normal makes it all seem so much easier to cope with! And who is more normal than Paul Blart?? "Peanut butter… it just fills the cracks of the heart". Firstly, BIB NUMBER pretty please, cos I want to stalk you all the way:)

Secondly, can I be part of your family please?! You guys have SUCH a riot!!

Thirdly, you're not alone!! I've been struggling with the same thing recently because of my injury and upcoming race…sadness=Emma lying on the couch clutching a bucket of PB! :P So I'm focusing this week on swapping my bucket of PB for a bowl of broccoli and getting back to fuelling myself properly again! LOVE YOU FRIEND and we're all gunning for you gorgeous!

Reply

Hey- don't feel bad about that- you are bound to feel frustrated being injured.
I have an ice cream maker and a ben and jerrys ice cream cook book! I made their chocolate pb ice cream once and it was amazing! So amazing! (We dont get much pb flavoured stuff in England). I also make christmas pudding ice cream at christmas which goes down a treat! :)
I might try to watch Boston online, as I normally watch the London marathon (the day before) but I am out, so can't which has made me sad. I love to watch stuff like that! :)

Reply

I love homemade ice cream! My grandpa used to make it all the time during the summer. He would use fresh peaches…oh, amazing.

Good luck in Boston and thanks so much for your continually positive approach to dealing with injury and everything to go with it. (I know it hasn't always been like that for you but you have pushed through.)

Reply

Love this honest post, Janae! Your posts always make me smile. They resonate with me so much! It's ok to treat yourself with your favorite foods every now and then. But once it starts to affect the way you feel ALL the time, then you know it's a good time to get back into gear. I cope with a lot of feelings through food, which is a struggle in itself. Then I feel awfully guilty and it makes the situation worse. BUT the good thing is that you were able to pinpoint the culprit of it and make an effort to fix it. I love new beginnings. :)

Just remember that you deserve what your body craves, and it sounds like it is craving your favorite spinach, broccoli, and yummy fruit after a delicious few days. Trust your body, don't try to control it! That's what I always tell myself.
Keep your chin up! I think about your strength and positivity every time I run. You'll be running soon, Janae. I just know it! :)

I'm in it to win it….right there with you.
No more eating my emotions and walking around bloated and achy all day. It's not making me any happier!

Wonderful post Janae! Stay strong and keeping being amazing and you will do wonderfully!

I will be in Boston (since I'm from here) for the marathon and took the day off work to watch the race. I would LOVE to cheer you on!!! Please send your bib number and I will try to remember to check Twitter. ;)

Are you doing a meetup in Boston while you are here? Would love to introduce you to frozen yogurt Boston-style!

I had a bad week last week and tried to get better as the days went on, but couldn't. but today i'm working hard towards feeding my body what it needs. I think the best thing about getting healthier after an off week is to try new things; like i got farro to try along with some Israeli couscous and other eats to keep me motivated! makes eating more fun instead of being associated with something, ya know?

Reply

I know exactly what you mean! I've been on a poor food choices/too much food rampage recently too. I decided yesterday it had to stop. So, today I went to the gym before work and have been making good food choices throughout the day. I still may make s'mores for dessert though…can't help it. ; )
Goals this week are to bike and/or swim everyday and to eat healthier. There's just so much great Easter candy all around…like those Swedish Fish Eggs that I Twitter'd you about. Yes, I got them AND ate them. : )
Please share your bib number. It will be fun to track you! You'll do amazing!!

Oh yeah this has been me these last couple of weeks. I have been sad and tryinto deal with it by eating. Its sad when I was skinnier right after I had my baby. Anyway y dad is sending me a jogging stroller. Hopefully that and (fingers crossed) a break in the weather will raise my spirits.

You know I love this post! It really is important to nourish our bodies with nutrient-rich foods, and definitely save some room for treats, too. No Boston for me..I'm all the way over in AussieLand..

I constantly struggle with trying to eat better. My problem is I'm physically addicted to sugar and I don't really like vegetables, along with a host of food allergies. I hope you feel better and run Boston!

Great post! I too am making an effort to eat especially healthy these last 2 weeks before Boston. The mind plays an amazing role in the recovery process so if you stay as positive as you are, you'll be as good as new come April 18th :]

Reply

I feel ya on the food issue. I've definitely overdone it with the cakes/candy/ice cream/etc lately too. For once, I'm not concerned about weight gain…I just don't feel good and I want to fix that!

You're right.. no time like the present to start anew! I'm committing myself to making every meal/snack as nutritious as possible. I can still enjoy all my faves, but I need to get back to incorporating more of the good stuff into what I'm eating :)
More veg, more fruit, more water, more PROTEIN. Less soft drinks. Less caffeine. Less simple sugars. Stop boredom-eating. Eat regularly and well so I don't end up binging on cookies at 3am. Be disciplined but not psychotic or obsessive. ENJOY food. Most importantly LISTEN to my body. It's nearly always spot-on about what I need :)

aw girl, everyone feels like crap some days. But remember that all the cardio you are doing — even though it isn't running — is still burning through all that food like a well-oiled-machine.

it's strange, but I've always noticed that I am more prone to overeat and to eat "bad" things on no-exercise days. I think the cardio regulates my blood sugar, and without it, I crave sugar all day.
