Cool Realization.

Good morning loves!! I had quite the random night….let’s talk about it:)

First stop, Costco, to get some gas and load up on the essentials (bread, eggs, brocc, spinach, tortillas and apples) and we couldn’t escape the food court without spending $3 for two……

Hotdogs and drinks.

Something cool happened tonight.  In my past (5 years ago) there was NO WAY that I would have come within 5 feet of a hot dog (not because it was meat but because it was one of my fear foods) you can read more about that here and here.  Once I started getting past my disordered thinking I started eating my ‘fear foods’ without guilt but I was also running 60 miles a week and teaching spin classes which helped me to transition into that stage of feeling no guilt.

Here is where the awesome part is coming in……I am not exercising right now and I can eat my old ‘fear foods’ without feeling any guilt and guess what…..I didn’t wake up 900 lbs or feel sad in the least bit.  I feel like a normal person, hallelujah.

Sorry, I just felt like sharing that in case any of you are afraid to eat certain things without exercising it off……. ya know what I mean?  No more feeling guilty for indulging in a $1 hot dog every now and then missing some workouts, you are perfect just the way you are!

After Costco, we drove straight to my parents to celebrate my brother’s 49th birthday.

I think we look alike in this picture.

IMG 5469

Please notice my excellent wrapping job for his present……newspaper is the latest thing.

He was kind and let my niece help blow out the candles.  I am not that generous and on my bday I don’t let anyone breath near the candles.

Isn’t my gma adorable!

IMG 5475

You bet your bottom dollar that we had the same dessert as Sunday nights dessert because once we find something we love, we stick to it.

IMG 5476

As we were eating dessert we heard a noise coming from the deck, we looked out the window and what did we see……

IMG 5478

My bro-in-law randomly bought two baby lamb today.  The kids freaked out….I have never seen them so happy and excited in their life.

IMG 5483

I should have guessed something was up when he called us earlier in the day asking where to buy those glass coke bottles (he doesn’t drink soda)…..little did I know it was to make bottles for lamb.

IMG 5489

He may be sleeping on the couch for the next little while….don’t think sissy is very excited about this considering they don’t live on a farm……but at least the kids are beyond happy!!  Perfect for Easter:)

——————————————————————————————————

What animals did you have growing up?  What animals do you have now?

-We had dogs, hamsters and birds at one point.  No pets yet…..still working on getting my responsibility chart filled up with stickers before Billy will let me get one.

Are birthdays a big deal in your family?

-Yes, I like to sing the bday song at least 3 times, presents, dessert and dessert round 2.

Favorite angel food cake (in our case vanilla bean cake) toppings (even though I think it is a sin that it doesn’t have frosting)?

-Lots o’ whipped cream and strawberries or peaches when they are in season.

What is your Wednesday workout?

-I am going to pump and skipping any of the lower body lifting…..I will just stare (wow, I am creepy) at my fellow classmates while they are in pain and agony from 4 trillion squats.

I think it's great that you ate that hot dog without guilt :)! I am going to Zumba tonight..it's my usual Wednesday workout!

That is so BRILLIANT that you are so far past your disordered eating now! I totally understand what you're talking about, and you are AWESOME:)

And the lambs are so CUTE!! I want them!!

My Wednesday workout was spin+weights…I feel like you! :P

P.S. I went to Pump, and although I could do the squats I can't do the lunges cos of my shins, so I did the creepy stare thing too- between us we're making it a trend:)

Also, CONGRATULATIONS on the hotdogs. They are so nasty, but so good. : )

I never went full on disordered eating, but even now I'm trying to learn how to step away from calorie counting. I've got to trust I have the tools to manage my healthy weight, like you have. This post helps me with that trust!

For animals, I grew up with 6 cats (at the same time!) plus a dog. Very full house. Right now I have two cats. They own me – no doubt about it.

I was supposed to get up and run this morning, but I didn't wanna so I didn't. I'm too excited for a long drive I have today – to PA for Easter with family!

That is truly such a huge and awesome breakthrough and I am really proud and happy for you :) I am not yet QUITE at that stage but I'm gettin' there. And I simply CANNOT WAIT to enjoy my first guilt-free, exercise-free hotdog (/ice cream/chocolate bar/popcorn/pizza/all of the above).

Reply

So cool that you can eat your old "fear foods" w/o worrying about it! I'm working on being able to do that!
I've actually never had angel food cake……always wanted to try it, though!

Reply

Thanks for posting about your fear foods… welcome to my life! you are awesome… period.

Your grandma is the CUTEST and so are those baby sheep!!!

omgosh those baby lambs are the most precious thing ever.

im glad you were able to eat the hot dog guilt free! i'm really happy that you have come so far and that you share it with us! :) I havent had a real hot dog since I was 5. they scare me!

Birthdays arent a big deal in my family but my sister and I make a big deal out of each others.

I didnt have pets growing up bc my parents wouldnt let me but I did get the cutest pup of all time a few years ago. her name is Pita! And she is the sweetest little thing ever! Then my dad fell in love with pita and got his own tiny little dog. Its too funny.

I dont think I've ever had angel food cake.

I'm going to an hour and a half of hot yoga after work. Super excited about it!

Reply

So exciting about the hotdogs (that's a really weird sentence)!

I had one dog as a pet as a kid. I was deprived. What are the lambs for???

I'm not sure what my wednesday workout will be today. Mike has poker tonight, so it might be time to chain myself to the treadmill and tv to entertain myself.

Reply

The only animals we had growing up were fish. My sister is allergic to pretty much anything with fur. :D

I'm planning on going to "yolates" and then maybe seeing if I can squeeze a run in.

Reply

Lambs?? Too cute!
We had dogs, birds, hampsters, vunnies and goldfish. My sister is cursed bc all of HER pets died!!

I was JUST telling my hubby about how i never thought i woulld have a NORMAL relationship with food and it feels sooooo good to be here!!!! Congrats to us!! ;)

Gonna work arms, shoulders and abs today.

The lambs are so cute, and the children are adorable for feeding them!
I've always had a dog (golden retriever!) and a cat, and I miss them when I'm at school. I can't wait to get my own dog to run with me.

I grew up with lambs!! My grandparents had them and they always let each grandchild name one and call one their own :) love it!

I WANT LAMBS!

I have dogs, cats, and horses- big dogs, always, never little yappy ones, and fast horses. I can't wait for this semester to be over so I can go home and hang out with my horses- we have 3 at the moment!

I've been trying to convinec my parents to get me a goose, but the parentals are not buying it.

fear foods are so tough and it is amazing how "silly" you feel after eating them and realizing how they really DO NOT impact your weight. BUT- the tough part is eating the fear foods and then not saying "I ate a fear food…not I guess I will eat another"

Have a great day!

i am so glad that you had that realization with the hot dogs. isn't it a great feeling, that the things you were afraid to eat and were doing to make you gain weight if you didn't exercise…don't?! so awesome! i'm so proud of you!!!!

and i love the lambs!!! so cute!!! but yeah, i bet your sister isn't the happiest lamb in the bunch…hehe….

Reply

I had to laugh at the lambs. That sounds like something my husband would do! I don't think he'd dare do it without asking me though. I must be meaner than your sister. The chickens were about as far as I'll go!
That cake looks so moist and better than angel food cake. I think you need to post the recipe. ASAP!
Hope you had a good pump class this morning!
Oh, and birthdays! I love them! My husband grew up not really celebrating birthdays. He remembers one or two cakes and never had a party. Can you believe how sad that is?!!!

Reply

How cute!!!

We didn't have pets growing up because of my allergies. Lame.

Birthdays definitely are a big deal, as they should be!!!

Reply

I cant believe he bought lambs…so hilarious! they are super cute though :)

We definitely LOVE birthdays. I think I am like the leader of the pack though…I seriously am addicted to ice cream and cake.

I loved reading about your realization…that has got to be SUCH a great feeling!

Reply

I can't believe he got lambs! That's crazy. I have an obsession with Costco but normally my husband just goes alone because it's right by his work, when I go I usually have 500 samples plus frozen yogurt so it's sort of bad news. That's awesome that you are able to eat former "fear" foods with no guilt now. I fear getting injured and gaining a ton of weight – it's something I need to move past but you have the exact right attitude! I just did a post about birthdays in my family – basically all holidays are RIDICULOUSLY OVER THE TOP HUGE. Fresh berries sound good on angel food cake with a ton of whipped cream but an actual cake with frosting and ice cream sounds even better.

Reply

Yay for eating food without guilt! I just love your attitude.

Growing up, my Grandparents lived on an 80-acre farm and had sheep. I loved when the lambs were born and we got to bottle feed them. I'm a sucker for farm animals to this day. They are so cute!

Reply

Good job for eating the hot dog without guilt! That is awesome-

I always just had a dog growing up, but now we have a golden retriever (my 4th child :) a couple of cats, horses, and we just got 5 baby chicks! (yay for fresh eggs!)

We always have a big party for birthdays, all of our family lives fairly close.

Always strawberries and fresh whipped cream for angel food cake!

Reply

My big family is the same way with birthdays! My mom always told us that we have to clear our schedule for birthdays lol
It is always a huge family get together with tons of food and homemade cakes. So Good :)

Reply

Uhhmm you realize those lambs are going to end up on a dinner plate in a few months when they get too big to live on a deck, right?

Reply

Girl way to go on overcoming "fear foods!" I'm not gonna lie, I definitely still struggle w/ a little bit of guilt after indulging when I haven't worked out. It's so great to see beautiful confident women like you who have succeeded in breaking through that! Have a great Wednesday!

Reply

I've had a lot of pets in my day, but never a lamb! Thats really neat, and I am jealous even though I don't know how to take care of a lamb or what their needs entail. What does one do with a lamb???

If you like hot dogs you must come visit Chicago ASAP, after all we are the hot dog capitol of the world!

Reply

You are so INCREDIBLE! I'm not 100% guilt-free after eating a 19-pound bag of Mini Eggs, but I know I will get there and I'm so excited about it!

In terms of birthdays, my family is the same. But there are usually 312 different desserts on the table. It's a nightmare and a dream all at the same time!

Wednesday's workout will be a practice spin class all by myself (exciting, right?). I need to prepare myself and test out my playlist for my first ever teaching gig on the weekend!

Have an "awesomesauce" day!

I love your blog, and read it every day…I don't know if I've commented before, but I love your posts…your humor is great. Also, congratulations on your success with "fear foods" I know exactly what that feels like, and it feels like you've finally conquered something!

I had a parakeet growing up, a cat and three hamsters. Nothing too exciting but enough to keep me happy. Now my family has 4 cats, 2 birds, and a puppy. The kittens and the puppy are legit best friends. So cute.

My workout today is running, Insanity, and swimming.

Reply

Hey girlie! Thanks for your comment. Yes, I find myself thinking or obsessing about running in church even! Yikes! So it was time for a reset. :) Tonight's workout is mixed intervals on a crappy treadmill in a strange city …ahh the joys of traveling while training. I had a nanny goat when I was a kid. :)

Reply

Hi Janae :)
I just love you! I had to get that out- first & foremost :)
That is such a wonderful realization. I had a realization over this past weekend too- I actually ate a bagel! I thought I was a in a different body or something, because they were always my fear foods- just all of that bread in one sitting- oh the horrors. (ha!) But I loved every bite of it & I can't wait to have another one!!
I read your previous post (the one from January about gaining the 5lbs) & I think it's hard to realize how MUCH food our bodies really need with all of the exercise…but it's amazing how much better your performance is when you up calories. It took me a while to realize that- like a good 10 years..but I think I might just be super close to a very happy place in my self image. Every day is a different day, but as long as the majority of days are 'happy days' then I think I'm doing something right :)
Thank you for posting this- really makes me think :)
I love the pictures of the baby lambs- if your sister doesn't want them- just tell her she can fly them down to me in Florida :) :)
xoxo

-STRAWBERRIES! :)

Is your brother really 49? If so I want the genes in your family!
Growing up there were dogs, cats, horses, chickens, a pig, turkeys, and a few sheep. I hated them all (except the horse I named after Sid Vicious). I do like other people's pets. Now my kids have a hamster and a beta fish. That is all they will ever have. I am so mean.

Reply

Me and my sister once brought a rabbit home from the county fair. lol it was a wild rabbit and ate half the house.

I can't believe your brother is 49? Your parents look far to young to have a child of that age. Were you an accident child Janae?

And yes my family goes full throtle for every single b-day. Sunday party, day of bday party, going out to dinner party. I love Birthdays!

Have a great day beautiful girl. P.S. you look gorgeous in the pick with the hot dog. :)

I used to love Costco hotdogs but now they make me sick. Everytime I think I want one, I get one and I hate them the entire time I’m eating them. haha :)

I’m running 6 miles tonight, can’t wait!

You should always be able to eat anything you want, in moderation. I always have a hard time eating "bad" things and not wokring out. I know how you feel when you no longer have that feeling of feeling guilty.

Reply

You are hilarious, I just have to say. And yay for eating the hot dog. I am somewhat obsessed with exercise and running as well so I can relate! My Wednesday workout is going to be a one hour Pilates class and then hitting golf balls at the driving range for one hour later. Running tomorrow!

What is your brother going to do with the lambs? That is such a funny pet.

Such a blessing ins diguise, right? Mental health is top notch! I love it Janae, you always inspire us with these realizations! I love birthdays, just not celebrating mine, haha. I like to make my family food. Made with love and its a cheap gift. haha, don't tell them that!

two baby lambs??? adorable!! i want i want!

Reply

that is a great realization! its an amazing feeling to be able to overcome something that constricted you so much. in high school i was psycho about what i ate and how much i worked out. i wouldn't eat anything with any fat in it (i didn't believe any fats were "good" fats) and would exercise for hours every day. i remember one day in my dad's kitchen when he was making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and i thought to myself "i will never eat something like that" and it gave me anxiety to watch how much peanut butter he used. i'm not like that at all anymore, i don't restrict anything from my diet (i just try to have a good base of fruits, veggies, proteins and grains) and now i eat peanut butter almost every day!!

i want those lambs SO badly!!! they are the cutest things ever!!

The baby lambs are SO CUTE!!!!

My parent's didn't let me have an animal until I was 15! It was a cat. Now, I have 2 dogs :)

Reply

Aw! Those baby lambs are so cute!! I could totally cuddle them….lol! We have had dogs, cats, mice, hamsters, rats, birds…and a great dane which equals a horse. We have our lovely son Ridley now, a chocolate lab who I love more than anything. Animals are very important in our family. It is amazing how important Birthdays are in our family. If you havent called that person by noon to wish them a happy birthday you could not be included in cake and ice cream. My wednesday workout will be a 5 mile run outside (since more snow is coming tomorrow!) and weights!

Reply

We had "Lance" growing up! Our beloved golden retriever from 8 weeks old until the sad day we had to put him down at 11 yrs. old. For my family we have always "tried" to have a dog but my son is allergic to MOST breeds. FINALLY, 3 yrs ago we adopted a Bichon Frise that doesn't bother his allergies & we love him so much :)

Bdays are a big deal around here but having three kiddos we have a tradition of alternating their "big" birthday parties. One year will be just family, the next a party at a cool place or friends, etc.

Reply

Wow, your bro-in-law is pretty brave!! :) My husband would be in the dog house FOR sure if he brought home two lambs. I mean seriously? What would we do with them? Ride them?

Okay, lot's of people want to know now if you meant to type 49!!! If that was the correct number, he looks great!

The lambs are adorable. I had goats growing up in Oregon and they are great pets. I am trying to figure out if my HOA will allow that in Arizona. Maybe I will just stick with a dog and cat.

When I was growing up in Oregon our neighbors down the street had pet cougars. You could hear them at night. It is so weird that I now have a phobia of cougars….

We have a donkey and I kid you not. My parents bought a second house about 6 years ago and the man always promised to find a new home for the donkey but he never did…so he still stays there.

I'm waiting for the recipe for the vanilla bean cake, unless it is a family secret of course.
I have a not so secret love of hot dogs. in fact, I recently dedicated an entire blog post to the amazing Sonoran dog I had in Arizona. Still thinking about how good it was.
I came home one night to find a giant frog named blob that my husband had bought for "his son", I think he was the one that wanted it. At least the lambs are eating from a bottle, Blob the frog eats live mice. Gross!

Reply

Those lambs are SO DARN CUTE!!! I am with you on the whole "fear foods" thing…sometimes I can't eat them if I'm not working out that day but I try so so hard to get past it. Sometimes it works:) I am so proud of you for getting past it!!

I have had cats, dogs, and a chicklet egg one time that never hatched it just smelled bad.

There you go again tempting me with that strawberry angel food cake ;)

I have a puggle. She is pretty much the cutest dog in the entire universe, she's a little fat but that makes her extra cute.

Glad you ate the hotdog. They're totally worth it :). We never had any interesting pets growing up. Dogs and sometimes fish. I think I'll ALWAYS have a little dog. They make me happy :)

Wednesday workouts are low-key for me. Walking a bit and a pilates class. It's probably my favorite all week! Perfect mid-week relaxing break.

I can relate to your fear food of "hotdogs". I have always struggled with my weight. I lost about 40 pounds 10 years ago and struggle EVERY DAY to keep it off. 10 years later, and it's still hard because I LOVE my food. Anyway, when I first lost all my weight, I was VERY restrictive with how I ate. Then, I would over exercise if I ate anything that I thought wasn't healthy. Hot dogs were from the devil, in my opinion (only kidding). If we ever had a family bbq, my mom would bring fat-free hotdogs for me. One family bbq, the fatfree hotdogs got mixed up with the regular hotdogs. AFter I ate mine, my brother-in-law told me he accidentally gave me a regular hotdog rather than the fat-free one. I about had a meltdown – like I was going to gain 10 pounds because of that hotdog. I can laugh about it now, but I was so seriously mad back then. I am now much less restrictive with how I eat – I've put on some weight, but I'd rather enjoy life more rather than live life restricting. Thanks for your honesty. I just love reading your blogs. I'd like you to blog 3x a day if you can find the extra time:)

Reply

I love all of your family gatherings! You and your brother definitely look alike in that photo – lucky him. :) We love birthdays in my family. It usually involves a backyard BBQ because we have most birthdays in good weather months. I've been to yoga twice today. Ha. I'm taking a break from running the past few weeks and focusing on strength, balance and flexibility. My knees are happier. Love ya.

Janae, This post made me tear up. We are SO wired (especially with disorder eating backgrounds) to fear food. Food was created for our bodies to FUEL them. Having a hot dog (or another fear food) will only make our body love us more. I think so often I've gotten caught in the… "Well I at X, therefore I must exercise".It's crazy thinking! I have learned over the past couple of months that our bodies will never betray us and if we listen to them (in taking the time off), they will do what they are suppose to do! Okay, rant over ;) Love you gorgeous girl!

Reply

You probably don't remember but a couple months ago you sent some very encouraging words my way. Now it's my turn to try and encourage you. we had cats, always, to kill the mice, and our dog we had for 13 yrs just recently passed. we had some chicks at one point, too.

thank you for being honest, and reminding me its ok and i wont wake up heavier if i indulge. i, too, have come a LONG way dealing w/ guilt, fear foods, anxiety, etc, but sometimes i still struggle a bit. last week was rough…lots of eating out and such. but i'm still the same girl each morning when i wake up, still go to work, still have a great family, etc. food is just that; its not ME.
