Lemon Cake: Will you marry me?

Ever since my bff’s wedding my sister and I have been in pursuit of the World’s Best Lemon Cake.  You see, at my bff’s wedding she had lemon cake from Magelby’s. Being the closet eaters that my sis and I are we ate 6 pieces between the two of us.  They always cut those darn wedding cake pieces so small, selfish.

At least we danced the night away after and I am pretty sure laughing as hard as we were burned at least 8,000 calories

Ever since that cake we have talked about it, dreamt about it and begged our mom to buy us the $200 wedding cake.  She wouldn’t do it.

While I was in Cali for Christmas my sister called hysterical.  I was worried at first why she couldn’t catch her breath but was shortly relieved when I heard her mutter the words, “I found it.”

I knew exactly what she meant, no questions asked and a small tear weld up in my left eye.  Free at last.

IMG_3450.JPG

The girls got together tonight at La Jallo Groves to see how many tablespoons of sugar we could eat in frosting while catching up on everything. I am a mama’s girl and I hadn’t seen the woman in over two weeks.  It was time.  Plus the gorgeous sister-in-law Jamie was in town from AZ.  Have I told you about the time that I set her up with my bro and they ended up getting married?!?!  100% accuracy.

IMG_3455.JPG

After we ate, somebody had the brilliant idea of going to the bakery connected to the store and somebody may have told us to pick out our favorite treats…thanks mom.

IMG_3461.JPG

We had to make my mom not feel like a midget for once…I know we are selfless.

IMG_3464.jpg

We may have dug into our goodies in the car ride home.  Sisters exact words: I wish I could bath in this coconut frosting.

By the time she dropped me off we had crumbs on our lips, veins full of sugar and a new favorite memory together…..my New Years Resolution is working out great.

GO WISH EMZ HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CAKE FLAVOR???

-Lemon cake with a delicious sugary lemon glaze….and funfetti (I know I am ghetto)

Random question of the day…..What was your favorite grade of school?  DId you play sports in high-school?

-I LOVED senior year….no boy friend, all my best girls were single…we played non-stop.

-I played TENNIS ever year, and track for one year.  I thought of student government as my main extracurricular activity but I would run on my own 3 times a week.

I am drooling as I read this. Like saliva on my chin, drooling. Yum.

Just found your blog and loving it. You are 100 percent hilarious.

My favorite cake flavor is yellow cake from a box and chocolate frosting from a can. Sorry mom, I still love your homemade cake but Duncan Hines is pretty tough to beat.

Tres Leches is my fav. My boyfriend and I order it whenever we see it on a menu. It's really easy to make, but I try to avoid making it so I don't end up eating the whole cake by myself.

Funfetti is not ghetto!!!

That cake looks spectacular!
My Favorite is lemon too- atleast as far as "traditional cake" goes.
My family makes a chocolate steamed pudding that would knock your socks off. It's basically a really dense, rich chocolate cake (or a "pudding" aka British Dessert), steamed in a mold and topped with gobs of hard sauce- which is sugar and butter. HOLY CRAP it is good!

That cake looks so good! yum! Red velvet is prob my favorite cake but there really isn't a cake that I won't eat.

My favorite grade in HS has to be 11th grade. That was the year I could drive to school and I thought I was hott stuff. haha!

That cake is making rethink my New Years resolutions! Looks mighty tasty!

Homemade pineapple cake with cream cheese frosting. HANDS DOWN. I'd like to make it on my blog but I really don't want to healthify it.

Senior year of high school, no doubt about it, for pretty much the same reasons as you. Me and my girls hanging out all the time, doing crazy things and thinking we ran the school.

I played field hockey all four years (Yeah state champs 1996 and runner up 1998!)… sorry a little bit of glory days there. I was also a basketball cheerleader, but I don't really count that as a sport, more of a social activity.

Reply

I LOVE lemon cake. And carrot cake. Actually, I just love cake (except for chocolate..never chocolate enough?).

Being a master matchmaker is way fun, they actually got married?! That makes meshing the fam about ten times easier!

p.s. I used to never be hungry before my runs, but now I am staaaarving. Do you eat before you work out in the mornings?

i am a fan of funfetti cake. i'm not a big baked goods person so i guess my real answer is ice cream cake but that's not *really* cake. so funfetti it is :)

and i don't know what my favorite grade was. all those years were pretty rough. i played vball and bball all four years of high school

your family is all so beautiful!!

I'm not a huge cake fan. I mean I'm not going to turn it down, but I'd much rather eat cookies or candy. That being said, if I'm at a wedding, I WILL steal half of the table's pieces. We had cupcakes at our wedding (raspberry chocolate, chocolate banana, and bavarian creme) and I ate at least three a day after the wedding for like a week.

I ran track and played soccer in HS. My favorite grade was Junior Year. I finally grew out of my awkward phase and stopped thinking that being a giant weirdo was a bad thing and just had fun.

Reply

That cake sounds so stinkin' good!!!! I'm not a huuuge cake person, but I do love me some chocolate cake! =D

Reply

I was on the poms squad (that would be dancing, NOT cheerleading), and I ran track and I was also in drama. Don't laugh…Only the cool kids were in drama at my school. Oh yeah, I was also in band. I played the flute.

I love cake. I made this totally amazing chocolate cake once….Just smelling it added pounds. My husband and his family adored me for making that cake…So now I make it whenever they come around. At least I have an excuse to make it!

Reply

I can eat so eat me some wedding cake! Pretty group of girls!
I do not have a sporty bone in my body…I attempted drill team but I couldn't get my legs to do those crazy things, lol.
Has to be senior year as well! Wouldn't it be fun to go back and relive just one day!

Reply

ooooo that lemon cake looks delish. i don't really have a favorite cake because i favorite cake. well, except for spice cakes. i don't love spice cakes. i do LURV, love the red velvet cake with mini chocolate chips from nothing bundt cakes. yum-o!

you do have a beautiful family.

Oh! I LOVE tennis too!! But the court in Elkton is asphalt and the net sags…sigh :( …
That's another reason to run! I played soccer and was on the swim team in high school too. I was the only single girl in my circle then, but went everywhere with my friends & their guys (when invited haha;) )

A friend made me the most AMAZING birthday cake this year. It was chocolate and had some instant coffee in the mix to bring out the flavor- and real chocoalte frosting and chocolate covered espresso beans on it. The.richest.cake.i've.ever.eaten…I almost died on the spot.

Of course I love a good lemon cake too =D

Have a great day!! Thanks for the info on the shoes- sounds like a great idea to me.

Reply

CHOCOLATE!!!! I actually hated highschool, long story..sigh. I played volley ball. Have a great day!!

Reply

Ohmygosh. Can I be your third sister? I can hang with the frosting consumption (at least next month ;) )

I love German Chocolate Cake with so much coconut frosting you can barely tell there's cake.

I was on dance team for three years in high school and then coached the team a few years later for two years. I pretty much sucked at every other sport out there but I did play volleyball for awhile. Being 5' 1 and 3/4 (every quarter of an inch counts) it just wasn't meant to be. Spiking was just not in the cards.

Reply

Now I'm gonna have to go get some cake. I'll work it off walking around Disney and running the marathon, right??

My favorite grade was also senior year of high school. I did what I wanted, didn't care what everyone thought, knew I was getting out, and had an AMAZING trip to Italy.

I did just about everything in high school…a million different musical groups, track, soccer, one year of basketball, Latin Club, National Honor Society, etc. etc. You get the idea. I'm an overachiever.

Reply

I'm not a big cake fan except for Cherry Chip cake which isn't sold in New England so every year my mom sends me a box of it so I can make it for my birthday!!

My favorite grade of school… that's tough. Probably my senior year as well. I was on the softball team my freshman year, a cheerleader sophomore – senior year, on the Yearbook staff my junior & senior year, plus a member (and VP senior year) of the anti-drug group PEACE (Peers Educating Against Chemicals Effectively) and we would go into elementary schools to talk about peer pressure and bullying. Oh and I was also voted Most School Spirit by my Senior Class! I can cheer the loudest!

Reply

Favorite cake? Chocolate. I don't even understand why other flavors are made. Who would ever eat anything other than chocolate? (you, obviously)

Favorite grade, hmmm … IDK
High school athlete … competitive diver. Went to state and national competitions.

Reply

chocolate sheet cake with chocolate frosting… YUM. So much butter and sugar and happiness and deliciousness…

Reply

We had lemon cake for our wedding cake. It is my favorite.

I think my favorite year of school was second grade because I had the most amazing teacher.

I danced in high school on the drill team, but didn't play any sports. I've never been very athletic.

Oh my goodness, lemon cake is THE BOMB. I don't know that I have a favorite flavor though…since cake is not my thing. give me a bar of chocolate and i'll be in heaven instead. with pb. wait, is there a pb cake!? pb chocolate mousse cake!?!??!!??!??!? heavens i must find it.

i loved fourth grade and 12th grade the most. best of friends ever. i was xcountry captain my senior year too, even though i was the slowest girl on the team, but had been there the longest. the junriors/sophomores were our shining stars, but i was the one that never missed a meet/practice, when when i had broken bones (toes) and pulled muscles. yep. hardcore.

Reply

Hmm, I love most all cakes but I have to say that lemon cake tops my list as well but my mom's easy one bowl chocolate cake is a very close second.
My favorite grade? I don't know, I liked all of high school. I played tennis every year and got third at state and fifth at state and qualified every year. I was also a cheerleader which was fun.

Reply

OMG I can see why you love that cake! Looks sensational!!!
My favorite cake is carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
I was a competitive cheerleader all 4 years of high school. Good times :)

Favorite cake would be carrot cake! I also played tennis and swam.

That lemon cake looks awesome. What is the cool decoration over the cake – honey?

Our wedding cake had a couple flavors including some fantastic carrot cake with cream chese frosting. Also a white cake w/raspberry – and definitely butter cream frosting, none of that fondant nonsense. A bakery near us makes these phenomenal mocha cupcakes – I love the moist, but not too moist, dark chocolate cupcake with coffee buttercream frosting! :D

Favorite grade? I pick 5: I had awesome fun teachers in 2nd and 3rd grade; 6th was also awesome, and 9th and 12th were also fantastic.

Sports? I played soccer for the school in 8th and 10th grade, and I played soccer every summer. I did ski club in 12th grade. And bear with me, I'm considering it a sport because of the March – November time commitment: 5 years of Marching Band.

Reply

Is that some sort of crazy glazed sugar over that cake? Swoon…

And I know what it's like to constantly search out something like that… it's how I am with tiramisu!

Reply

Coconut frosting?! Yum.
I played soccer through 8th grade, then decided I wasn't coordinated enough to continue. I ran cross-country in high school and loved all the trails & fun times from it.

Reply

OMG I LOVE CAKE!! My favorite has to be ALL OF THEM! Well red velvet and vanilla are my top choices! We have a few cute cupcake places around here and I need to go soon and get some! I also am super excited for our cake tasting for the wedding!

My favorite grade had to be junior and senior year of high school. IT was just the best time of my life. i did play sports in high school. From 7th threw 12th grade I played soccer, bball and track.

Reply

What a fantastic night! I also really like lemon, but anything with ganache trumps all!

I liked all of high school after freshman year. I would go back to high school in an instant, which for some people is their worst nightmare. I ran xc all four years, played soccer my first three and ran track my senior year.

Reply

My favorite year was also senior year i think, and i did crew throughout high school.

Now all i want to do is stuff my face with funfetti..ahh!

Reply

ah cake….I miss cake…chocolate cake.

I played basketball in school and I swam

Favorite school year: ALL of them! I LOVED school

Reply

I love lemon cake! I also love strawberry shortcake or strawberry cake with white frosting…OR yellow cake with chocolate frosting. I need to bake a cake! My favorite year of grade school was 5th I think. I loved 4th, too. I didn't play sports in high school – I was sort of a gym rat, though. I played soccer, softball and ran track through 7th grade.

Reply

I like lemon cake, but a good moist chocolate cake with ganache beats them all.
I loved my Junior year of high school. So much fun! Maybe too much fun. I didn't play any sports. I wish I would have. I was just too busy with my friends. I didn't consider myself athletic at all!

Reply

My favorite cake is an Italian Cream Cake. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Gooooooooooood!!!!!!

I think my Junior year in high school was probably my favorite. It just seems like a lot of my most fun memories were from my Junior year! Senior year was pretty awesome too, but during that year I was dating the guy that I would go on to marry (and divorce) and he just ruins a lot of those memories for me!

I didn't play sports in high school. I didn't figure out that I was somewhat athletic until I was in my early 20s!

Oh, and BTW, if you really want Bella and Harley SO BAD, after last night I might be willing to cut a deal. LOL Bella is entering the terrible twos, I think…

I LOVE lemon cake!! We had alternating tiers of Lemon and Strawberry cake at our wedding, and it was so good. That cake you have looks amazing!

My favorite grade was my Junior year. I had a jerky boyfriend senior year that caused way more drama than he was worth, otherwise it would have been a toss up between the Jr. and Sr. years.

I was a cheerleader for 9 years – 4th grade all the way through high school. We even went to nationals in Orlando a couple of times (didn't win though). I had about a year of softball and 2 years of volleyball thrown in, and I played tennis for a year for my country club team (but not for my high school).

I have been reading your blog for a couple weeks now and I seriously feel like we could be great friends! My friend Justin is a manager at J-Dawgs and seeing you eat one made me so jealous and my mouth water.
I don't have a favorite flavor of cake, any will do for me!
4th grade was awesome. I had the greatest teacher who would sing cowboy songs.
One more thing….I am also planning on running the St. George Marathon! hoping for a 4hr time though.
almost forgot the last question….I did volleyball, basketball, track and one year of softball in high school. I'm from a small town so they needed me ;)

Reply

For me cake is just a delivery mechanism for frosting so anything that goes with cream cheese frosting is amazing in my book.
I was the biggest slacker in HS – no activities at all. I didn't start exercising until I was in my mid-30's, now I love taking group classes at the gym and just finished my first half with my 15 yr old.

That lemon cakes looks sooo good and I love funfetti with the matching frosting…prob one of my favorite boxed cakes. Im not a huge cake fan, but I love homemade red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. My sister makes it the best. It always tastes better for breakfast the next day. I played sports in high school….volleyball all four years, basketball, swimming. Went through an experimental stage: tried soccer (i sucked), tried tennis (i hit too hard), tried swimming (became captain), tried judo and a few other things. fun, fun times.

I think my favorite cake would be my grandmother's coconut cake… it's so DELISH.

My favorite grade… probably 12, I was rowing at the national level for the first time, had an easy yaer class wise and it was pretty goooood!

And I LOVE that you lvoe hockey too! YAY!

Wow! That IS a pretty cake! I'm gonna find me another one to propose to, hehe!

Rainbow Chip Frosting cupcakes are my absolute favorite! I could eat that frosting from the tub. My favorite grade was my senior year as well! I finally stopped carrying about boys, was in student government, and I was just carefree. I loved hanging out with my friends and I was not concerned about petty thing anymore. I played basketball and soccer for all four years and I ran track for one, until I decided running around in circles was not for me! I would have loved cross country, but it was during soccer season. Basketball was my favorite though and I loved loved it! I miss playing so much. Sports were the best!

Reply

my favorite grade was probably my junior year with i met my NOW husband! we dated through highschool…yeah, we are like the ONLY couple still together and have been since 1995!! we hung out with friends too though, we weren't your typical "up each other's butt's" couples.

sadly i never played anything in hs. the only sport i ever was in when i was younger was bowling. i got a patch sewed on to my tshirt when i bowled my first 100. running for a year now has been my "sport" for this 32 year old girl! :)

Reply

Mmmm that looks so tasty. I love fruit flavored cakes. My godmother Lisa makes this homemade to die for strawberry frosting with real strawberries that I just absolutely adore.

Also your fam is so gorgeous!

Chocolate cake with homemade chocolate frosting. None of the canned garbage! Homemade is soooo much better! And a big glass of ice cold milk to wash it down.

Reply

My favorite flavor of cake is probably italian cream or a cappucino type. Or pumpkin, or german chocolate. Yeah, I like cake and I never skip it at weddings. Of course, if it's not awesome, I don't finish it. If it's awesome, I go back for more!

I think either 11th or 12 grade was my favorite.

I played volleyball and softball in high school (I was lazy and at the time hated running). I was pretty good at both sports though. Much to everyone's surprise, I didn't play ANY sports my Senior year so I could concentrate on my Student Council presidency. Yeah, i'm a dork

Reply

um i love lemon everything… this cake looks amazing!!!

i was a figure skater in middle/high school. in addition to captain of the debate team, quiz bowl team, and on the model united nations. aka super nerd.

I played tennis SERIOUSLY for years too!! yeahhh girl! SUCH a great sport to know how to play. i almost played in college but then i got burnt out.

umm your family is freaking BEAUTIFUL!!

love you!

Reply

My senior year of high school was definitely my favorite year. Keep in mind with what I'm about to write next that it was a very small school. I was student body president, captain of the soccer team (we were the worst team in the league, but we had the most fun), sat on the school board, and wrote weekly articles for the school paper. That was the year I got into my dream college, staged a walk out over budget cuts, solidified the bonds I had with my teacher.

Reply

I'm totally with you on the funfetti cake! And any kind of chocolate cake.

I played soccer and ran track my freshman year and then played lacrosse my sophomore year. I would probably say my favorite year of school was 8th grade. I went to a really small school and there were only 10 girls my year and we were all pretty good friends. It was great!

YUM!! Favorite cake is carrot cake and regular chocolate cake with white frosting. Lemon cake is yummy too!! :)

Favourite cake?! What a question! Lemon, gingerbread and chocolate are my faves I think, but I've yet to find a cake I DON'T love! :P

Chocolate cake with a fluffy marshmallow center with chocolate ganache frosting. If I can't have that, A plain old Duncan Hines wouldn't kill me.

The only sports I played in HS was chase…as in with boys ;) LOL!

Of course you dug into the goodies on the way home! Aren't you supposed to? lol Yummmmm… that all looked and sounded so gooooood!

Cake… it's what's for breakfast. A favorite cake… too hard… it's pretty much all good. (but I agree w/ a previous commenter that there is something pretty awesome about box yellow cake w/ canned chocolate frosting)

Favorite grade… sixth… awesomest teacher in the world and my best friend in my actual same class!

Sports in high school… even though I was on several teams: diving, gymnastics, soccer, and field hockey… I was a totally sucky athlete. I tried hard and I cared about it but I could own up to being the comic relief more often than not. (Imagine, a 5'7" gymnast.) I became an athlete later on, and my sport of choice became rowing.

Reply

Aww!! I wishI was closer to you! You are always so entertaining and we could have parties where taking "shots" of frosting was mandatory. :D

My fav cake = vanlla with THICK buttercream frosting. I mean THICK. Do NOT CHEAT ME HERE!

HS – 3 sports for all 4 years (softball, basketball, and track) I loved the glory years, but I was super serious about academics and athletics–wish I would've eased up!

Tell me you were voted homecoming qeeen and Miss Congeniality! I'm right aren't I? You are way too likeable!

mmmmm! great post. honestly, i'm really not a cake person; i usually leave it and eat all the icing/frosting. but if i had to choose to have crumbs of any kind gracing the icing, it'd be chocolate.

loved 8th grade and 11th grade. i was a cheerleader…i swear not stereotypical! (well, not in h.s. but in 8th grade, we're all awkward and super weird, figuring out how to act and such.) had friends in 11th and 12th grade, and man did we have a good time. probably too much fun!

Reply

i do love lemon. and red velvet. and carrot.

mmmm, coconut frosting….

i'm sorry, what was the question. i just got distracted and drooled all over my keyboard. awkward.

i loved my sophomore year. the last time all my girlfriends were single and we spend all of our time together…oh and i had a car. that made a huge difference…

Fav cake flavor? Probably strawberry cake with strawberry icing though lemon is starting to sound good now! =)
Fav grade in highschool? hmmm, tough one…in 9th I met my dream guy (he was a senior-SUPER hot, star soccer player, WAY out of my league) so that was a good year….BUT in 12th grade? I started to DATE said guy…then that same year? Married him, and 5 kiddos later and 14 years later, he STILL makes me weak in the knees =)

Reply

Lemon cake is my favorite too! Lemon anything really. But I am much more of a cookie person. Cakes can be a bit laborious to me.

My favorite year of school would have to be junior year of high school! I got really close to all of my friends that year, and had so much fun! I was also on my dance team, ran track (until my shin splints got really bad and my doc told me I had to choose running or dance, I chose dance), and danced at a studio. But I was also working part-time, had competitions every weekend, was teaching dance classes, founded the Silver Ribbon Campaign at my high school, and was on SADD.

Dude, Im tired just thinking about it. Aahhh, to be young again. ;-)

Reply

hmm i am not the biggest fan of cake.. but if I had to choose… probably chocolate with peanut butter frosting!

um, funfetti is the bomb. our wedding cake was chocolate peppermint, i ate basically the entire cake that night and for breakfast the next 3 days. unrelated, my pants are tight?!
