I learned something new today.

Speedy 16 year old track star brother-in-law and I went on a run.

The fam was going to Costco so we thought we would run there and meet them.

8.3 miles in 60 minutes.

Met the fam and ate lunch….I had the grilled chicken salad and ate half of my bro’s ice-cream Sundae.

I had the brilliant idea to run back right after I ate.  Good thinking Janae.

The first 3 miles felt great the second 3 hurt so bad.  I almost lost my lunch at least 4 times.  I ran a total of 14.5.

Overall, it was beautiful outside.

I learned something new…..don’t eat a ginormous lunch of fiber and dairy before you set out on a run.

Not every run is a good one.

Runs like this one make you APPRECIATE the good one’s so much more.

Took a 20 minute ice bath and had to give myself a pep talk to come up with the above optimistic points of view.

Tell me about a running/exercise lesson that you have learned recently!!!!

I made that mistake on Christmas.. NOT a good idea to run 2 miles after eating 2 pounds of food!

Do not run after eating a black bean burger for breakfast. LOL. Hey, I was at work and had to grab some leftovers on the way out the door…

I avoid dairy before all runs, I had milk one time with breakfast before a mid-morning run- ended in disaster!!! So I only eat dairy post-run and with lunch.

I am uber-boring and eat the same thing most days so I think my body has become used to the routine.

I've learned that just because I could once run 26 miles, taking two months off will make a 5 mile run seem hard!

Today I learned that I will run faster and farther than I think I can if I bribe myself with pancakes haha.

That and Seattle has some rocking views going today.

You are a trooper! And, my idol!

Lesson: When running at an elevation of 2400 ft (even if you are inside) have water readily available! Dry air = Dry throat = Poor respiration during a run!

You are TOO adorable and I won't comment on Billy's brother b/c he's not legal! ha ha!

Oooo that's tough! Glad you made it back home!!!

Lesson: You WILL have a better run if your head is in the game. If it's not, you'll likely feel sloppy and lethargic.

2nd Lesson: You WILL run slower and feel like you're dying when it's 90* outside and you're in direct sunlight. Don't be too hard on yourself about it.

I've learned that pacing at the beginning is KEY. Even though it's really tempting to sprint off the line (everyone else is doing it!!) It's the only way to get the speedy ending you want.

Something similar has happened to me before….of course, because I'm small, I have to eat SOMETHING before working out…otherwise I pass out. Which isn't fun.

Oh no! That does not sound like a fun run to me girlie!

12 miles in 20 degrees with sleet hailing down at you at 25 miles per hour is not fun.

Waking up at 3am and feeling amazing, I thought why waste this feeling and got on the treadmill for an amazing run. Worth it in the moment, paid for lack of sleep for the entire work week.

11 good miles and only 3 not so good? Sounds like a pretty successful run to me! Happy New Years!

Look at those guns!

If I eat apples before a run I get terrible stomach cramps. And if I eat bananas I puke. Multiple times.

Also, if I eat a DQ blizzard a couple hours before a run, it totally wrecks the run. Ugh.

yikes – a ginormous meal before a run definitely would spell disaster for me! During marathon training I learned about the importance of NOT overhydrating – very dangerous. Drink when you're thirsty – simple yet important advice :)

Milk prerun is bad, and if you have to ask yourself if it's too cold for shorts, it is too cold.

Have a happy new year!!

I learned it's ok to have a bad run, that I shouldn't beat myself up for it. Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year! life is all about learning – especially the running part of it. oh an not mention the the living part of it is as well.

btw – looking at the above pix of you and your b.i.l. – where do you put ALL the food you eat?! :)

Race how you train.

I had never had Gu before, then i had 3 of them during a 25k. I almost didnt make it to the finish line. I had never puked so much in my life. I passed out on my bathroom floor an couldnt move when I woke up because i was so dehydrated.

i couldnt agree more! great job getting out there even though you almost lost your lunch! :) happy new year!

Happy New Year Janae! You need to eat more!! :) I've learned to listen to my body and give it a break if I'm not feeling it…I think it is better to go off my "plan" sometimes and let my body tell me what it needs.

Yes I am definitely in agreeance about not eating before runs. I think I told you what happens and it's not pretty. And PS about the picture at the top, I'm pretty sure that thighs usually get bigger the closer to the butt they are, but yours are definitely an exception! But I must add that most people's thighs won't carry them 28 miles to the beach and back, so you've got major umph in those teeny legs! Way to go sister!!

Milk post run is bad, well ok so all dairy products post run are bad for me. Especially after intense track workouts. I love running to places and then getting a ride home!

I learned that I love compression sleeves after a long run!

I've learned that when you're injured, you should keep pushing because it only makes it worse.

I learned yesterday that running in 30MPH head winds is HARD. And when a fully-loaded semi drives past adding his 55MPH tail winds to the head winds it WILL blow you backwards!

Wow girl, I would not be able to motivate myself to run right after eating all that!!!

Although this was about a year ago, I've learned that I don't need a banana before a long run. I know it sounds silly but I ALWAYS ate a banana pre-run and the morning of my first 1/2 marathon I FORGOT MY BANANAS! I was freaking out at the start, but I finished strong even without it.

Reply

While running the Big Sur marathon I learned that running a lot of downhills is painful for my toes which made running uphill good!

Pay attention to your body when something doesn't feel right. Not sore muscle-type stuff, I'm talking "hmm, this could be an injury" type stuff. As runners, we tend to believe we can run through things — but had I taken time off sooner in my injury, I'd probably have been better off.

slow down if you need to… listen to your legs.

for every uphill, there is a downhill.

any exercise is still exercise…its still great for your body and head. and you always feel better (eventually) afterwards!
