Eastering, Pure Flow 6 Review & time to watch BOSTON!!

I hope you had an amazing weekend everyone!  Let’s catch up on some things shall we?

When I was growing up my mom would sew an Easter dress for me each year until I was a teenager (then we would go together to pick one out).  I haven’t sewn in a very long time so I just skipped to the ‘go to the store together and pick out an Easter dress’ thing with Brooke.  This one was from Old Navy and she is now in the girl section… no longer the toddler section.  WHAT?!?!?!!

We started off our Easter morning with a basket and breakfast (egg sandwiches)! (She wanted to bring out her Easter bunny from 2016 to be a part of the picture too… she told me she is collecting bunnies now).

Then we went to church for a while.  We came home and started the Easter dinner preparations.  Rhodes rolls for the win over here.  It was hot in Utah yesterday which meant our house was hot, which meant these bad boys rose to double their normal size… score.

We also just hung out and Brooke had plenty of stories to tell us.

And then the family came over.  My cute cousin was here (she lives in Portland now).  It was so nice to finally be able to catch up with her.   Both Andrew’s and my family came over yesterday which we loved.

The spread… fruit, a salad, roast, veggies, funeral potatoes (a Utah thing?) and jello (yes, another Utah thing).

My mom also brought our family’s favorite dessert ever… Date Bars. My dad has always been allergic to eggs and this is a recipe that his mom used to make when he was little.  We have kept this recipe tradition going:)

Andrew also made two of our favorite pies (recipes in this post).

We were all pretty exhausted by the end of the day.  Easter success story.

I’m all set to watch Boston!!!  The first half will be while running and watching it on the iPad and then the rest will be while I stretch, hang out and bite my fingernails waiting to see who wins.   Coverage begins HERE at 9:15 am ET!!!  Edited to add… I can’t seem to get it working on the BAA so I’ll be watching it on the NBC Sports app.

And just in case anyone is reading this before running Boston today!  Have an amazing time running your own race!!!  This is a part from Mile Markers—>  aka one of my FAVORITE running books ever and I have read it at least a few times.

Stick to your PLAN!

—————————————————————————————————————————-

I’ve put a couple dozen miles on the Pure Flow 6’s so I thought I would share my thoughts with you today.  I’ve been a Pure Flow fan since day #1 of their creation.  My excitement over their purple variety in the very beginning (say hello to baby Brooke in below picture) was a little much maybe;)

NewImage

So now we are all the way to the 6’s.  I used the Pure Flows until about the 3’s and sometimes the 4’s and then I fell in love with the Launches.  I didn’t hear the best reviews of the 5’s so I didn’t want to try them out but once the 6’s came out, I started hearing some great things, so I was all in.  In the very first run with them they reminded me a lot more of the earlier versions (especially the 3’s) of the Pure Flows so I knew I was going to have a great relationship with these.

The Pure Flow 6’s come in at 7.5 oz, they are a neutral shoe and they are $100.  They have a 4mm midsole drop and they are best for the roads and track.  I first fell in love with the Pure Flows because I loved that they were so light while still offering some support and cushioning.  I always felt like it was the perfect in-between of a more minimal/light/fast shoe and a super soft trainer.  It was the shoe that I could do every workout in from short-fast intervals to conversational paced long runs.

Let’s start with the upper of the shoe.  They have updated this portion which I really loved and it is completely seamless and now has a material that reminds me of mesh material.  They say it, “hugs feet for a smooth, socklike feel that’s totally natural” and I would 100% agree with that.  The upper feels like it truly does shape to your foot giving you that perfect fit that is snug but also allows for some flexibility and I think a perfect amount of room in the toebox for my toes to spread a bit with each foot landing (I hate it when I feel like the toebox of a running shoe forces my toes to be squished together).  The fabric used on the upper is much more breathable than my other current running shoes.  I had a problem with the tongue of the 4’s (and I heard the 5’s too) and I don’t even notice the tongue on these (when I don’t notice something as I’m running that means it is perfect for me because I don’t even think about it because it isn’t bugging me).  The tongue is very soft now.

The heels of these shoes offer a rounded heel which will help you with your stride alignment (which has been said to lower the stress on your joints).  There is also a nice comfort collar up around your heel/top of the shoe in the back (you know that lovely place where blisters occur from shoes that aren’t fitting right) which feels amazing.  The 6’s are said to have more flexibility than the previous versions.  I also feel a definite spring from the shoe as I am pushing off the ground with each stride (not as much as in the Launch’s for me but still really great).  The midsole of the shoe has DNA LT Cushioning which adapts to every step you take and I feel like it offers a lot of flexibility/bend in the right place with each stride.  It absorbs some of the impact with each stride.  I noticed that the bottom of the shoes offer a great amount of grip to the road… no slipping around in these shoes for me (I tried them on wet roads one day but I haven’t try them on the snow).

I have noticed that any of my Pure shoes do not get as many miles out of them as some of my other trainers but that is kind of to be expected with a lighter weight shoe in my opinion.   Will I switch completely over from the Launch’s back to the Pure Flows?  Nope… because I also have a special thing going with the Launch’s.  BUT I will be using these to race in and for more of my speed workouts and tempos at race pace for race preparation.

PS I have heard from a few people that these feel like they run a little bit smaller than previous options but I have worn a size 10 in every pair of Brooks running shoes across the board.  Just check it out if that applies to you though when you go to a running store.

I’ve always thought the Pure Flows were pretty but these are definitely my favorite version looks wise too:)

What is your current go-to shoe?  Any other Pure Flow fans?   What would you say is one of your family’s favorite/musts for holidays recipes?  Any foods/dishes that are kind of only a big thing in your state? What is your running goal this week?   True or false… watching running on tv is entertaining and never boring?

That is so sweet that your mom used to sew your Easter dresses! I really wish I were good at stuff like that, but I really am not. It looks like you guys had a wonderful Easter :) Happy Boston watching!

Looks like a wonderful Easter! :)

My mom shared this story with me about the first woman to run the Boston Marathon fifty years ago who is running it again this year! Such an amazing story and I thought you would love it (if you haven’t seen it already): http://wtop.com/national/2017/04/1st-woman-officially-run-boston-marathon-runs-50-yrs-later/

Seriously so amazing! She is now 70 out there running the Boston Marathon! She has such an incredible story… thank you for sharing! Have an amazing week Emily!

Im a die hard asics fan! I have high arches and narrow feet, so I need the support! What a fun celebration for Easter!!! I miss the days where I would get baskets full of treats!

Looks like y’all had a great Easter weekend together! I’ve worn the Pure Flows before, but they didn’t work for me. My go-to shoe is the Saucony Kinvara, and I really love it. I guess it’s kind of like that “run your own race” quote–we all have things that work well for us. And I definitely agree that quote can be applied to so many areas of life!

My running goal this week is to continue to progress and build back up my speed and endurance. I’m happy to be running again but have been slightly nervous that I’m going to feel pain in my kidneys, but so far it’s been OK. I just want to feel strong again and be able to pick a goal race to work toward.

Reply

I’m so glad you are running again Natalie and YAY for no kidney pain! Keep me updated with how you are doing!! Oh I totally agree… we all have different things that work perfectly for us personally and especially with our running shoes! Thanks Natalie!

I’ve been looking for a good funeral potato recipe, so I’m excited to try this one from your mom!

I ran in Brooks for the first 10 years I was running but then they changed my favorite shoe and I developed tendinitis. I switched to Asics Gel Kayano and had a good couple of years, but they’ve changed those and I’m on the fence. Might be going back to Brooks.

I love watching running on TV. I only watch a couple of races through, and only if my faves are running.

It’s always interesting how people’s feet fit into shoes. I’ve actually found this to be the first pair of Pureflows I can because they’ve widened up. I’ve been using them for speed work but couldn’t train in them daily or I would get hurt. I’ve currently been loving the Brooks ghost, glycerin, Hoka bondi and Saucony Freedom. I’m not really married to a shoe I suppose.

What a delicious Easter brunch! Always looking to find the winning pair of sneakers, I’ve switched so many times that I’m hoping to find a brand I can stick to! Excited to try these out.

im still all about the Adidas energy boosts! my favorite for almost four years.

Happy Marathon Monday! I’ve got the race on right now :)

My first proper pair of running shoes were a Saucony model that was super supportive because I was still recovering from my broken foot and I needed a lot of cushioning, but after I’d healed, the shoe was a bit too much to me. I went through a Nike pair I didn’t like and then I discovered the Newton Fates. I loved those because of the lugs on the bottom, and they were pretty too! Then they changed the Fates and now I’m running in the Under Armour Bandits, which I got for free through work. They’ve worked really well for me so far, so no complaints! Plus, they’re a nice pretty purple, which I love!

I switched from Brooks Ariel to Adidas 15 years ago. I decided to try the Ghosts 9 last year for winter running and got a Pb on half marathon with them! Now I am thinking of trying something light weight from Brooks for the summer. I have wide feet though so I have to do my homework to see if I find something that I like as much as my Adidas Adios boost.

ive been wearing the asics gt-2000 3s for ever. they are discontinued so i bought 4 pairs at a time on the internet! i dont know what i’ll do when i use them all up! probably give up running. just kidding. kinda.

Reply

Oh no! That’s what I wear. Had no idea they were discontinued. I’ve been using the couple of pairs that I found on sale on a trip to the States.

Happy Monday. I love reading your blog….I love your dress? Where is that from?

Reply

Thank you so much Christy! I got it at Called to Surf and I can’t find the same dress but this one is VERY similar! http://calledtosurf.com/product/scottsville-maxi-ivory/

Hope you are having a beautiful day!

I love the Pure Flows but my issue is the flap in the front has been giving me a blister on the top of my ankle. It’s longer than the last version. I just put a band aid there to cover it.

Reply

Are you talking about the 6’s giving you this blister! That is too bad… blisters are the worst. Sorry about that! I hope you are having a beautiful day Lauren!

Reply

Yes. I tried them today with different socks which helped. I am not sure why I didn’t try that before. Lol.
Hope you have an awesome day. I love reading your blog.

Happy Marathon Monday! Running on the treadmill just watching the elite women begin to race and upping my pace with motivation !

I’m sure you saw this but there’s science behind your, ” I can do hard things.” https://www.outsideonline.com/2171446/voice-inside-your-head-changes-way-you-run

Maggie! Thank you so much for sending me that article, first time seeing it and I can’t wait to read it! So glad you got to run on the treadmill while watching the marathon:) Best motivation!

What a fun Easter :) One of my family’s traditions for holiday recipes is my mom’s homemade cinnamon rolls. She only makes them once a year on Christmas morning and we all look forward to it all year. My grandma also always makes this super simple macaroni for every holiday that is literally macaroni noodles, canned tomatoes, and cheddar cheese. It really doesn’t sound that good typing it out, but it is one of my favorite things ever!

I’m an Asics girl.

Watching the marathon now. These athletes are so incredible. Today was a HIIT workout for me, but after watching the marathon, I am excited to get back out there tomorrow! I am also purchasing a new Garmin today so looking forward to testing it out!

Growing up, we always had pierogies at big family meals because there were so many Ukrainians in our province, though we weren’t Ukrainian. When I moved out of province, I was surprised to learn that other people didn’t even know what they were!

Reply

What Garmin are you getting Laura!?!? Way to go on your HIIT workout (those kill me) and enjoy your run tomorrow! I have never tried pierogies… I think I need to!

Reply

I recently discovered I have pronation so I need to go for stability shoes. My running goal this week is to at least get some miles in despite the end of my school semester, which is always crazy.

Reply

True that watching running is never boring! I’m on a cruise ship out in the middle of the ocean right now and can’t get any of the sites to play the marathon for me because I’m “out of region” and this is just very difficult for me to cope with! I have watched the marathon every year since I became a runner!

My favorite shoe are the Brooks Glycerins. I’ve been wearing them for a year now and they’re very comfortable!

Reply

I’m in Pure Flow 5’s right now and love them. The tongue is definitely kind of weird but I really don’t notice it on my runs. Excited to try the 6’s though!
We always have funeral potatoes at any occasion! I’ve also heard them called party potatoes, company potatoes, cheesy hash brown casserole, etc
Scotcheroos(kind of a peanut butter rice cereal base covered in melted chocolate & butterscotch chips) seem to be an Iowa thing for sure

Reply

I love all of the different names for the potatoes… might have to adopt those! Send me a scotcheroo asap:) I hope you are having an amazing day Michelle and let me know what you think of the 6’s! Thanks!

Hey Janae!
Okay, so right now I wear Launches for daily/longer runs and Saucony Zealot FIRST GENERATIONS!!!! for speed. I have a newish pair of Zealots that I’m wearing and ONE precious pair stockpiled. It sounds like the Pure Flow could be the shoe to pair up with my Launches for the speedier sessions once my stockpile of Zealots runs out! I love that. Things like that worry and stress me out! lol I love, love, love the Zealot so much–really wish they had not modified it after just ONE version!

Goals for this week–just keep building the mileage and stay healthy for Broad Street in a few weeks :)

Reply

LOL I’m on the smaller side and actually bought Brooke’s same dress on Friday!!! ? I wondered when I was paying for it if I would run into a child wearing the same outfit lol

Reply

NO WAY!!! Oh that makes me so so happy! I wanted it for me too:) Have a great Monday Amy!

Reply

Hi Janae! Unfortunately we can’t find Brooks over here. ?. I love watching marathons on tv but we only get the European championship, Olympics and other races like that. I would love to watch the Boston race. Maybe one day.
Here we eat chocolate almonds, mashed potatoes, lamb or codfish. (My family always has codfish).
Brookie is getting so big. She is so gorgeous and has such a sweet smile. Anyone can tell you are doing such a great job.
Hope you have a great week.

Reply

Thanks goodness they fixed the tongue in the Brooks. I always wondered how that scratchy-rip up your ankle- tongue ever made it past the first run test.

Reply

YES, thank goodness they are no longer the old tongues… the new ones are much softer and hit in the right spot! Have a fabulous day Rebecca!

Reply

I learned about funeral potatoes from my Mormon aunt :)!!!!! They are so good and I highly recommend everyone making them

HAHAH YES!!! So glad you have tried them! Definitely a Mormon food:) Thanks Amanda and have an amazing week!

All I have to say is that your Star Wars t-shirt is on point.

Hi! Loved watching the marathon this morning, they are running machines!

My oldest daughter loves dates, so I’m going to try the bars – but can I ask what size are the packages?

Thanks!

Reply

Okay, my mom just wrote me back! She was fast! She uses 3 8 ounce packages of chopped dates! She usually uses Dole! Thanks Tracy and have an amazing day!

Reply

Thank you and your mom so much! Sweet, we are well on our way thru the strawberry &a rhubarb crisp from Easter so I’m thankful she was so quick lol ?

Reply

I watched the first few women cross the finish line. It’s pretty exciting to watch such fast runners. Haha I wish I had just half of their speed!

Reply

Oh shoes.
Huge Brooks fan but when I got my injury I decided maybe it was gait related so I’m currently rotating Saucony Freedom and Launch 4. I’m ready to try the Launch 5 because I’ve heard great reviews.

Reply

I loved the Pure Flows as well! Ran my first marathon in them. But the last couple years I’ve been all about New Balance! Love their Zantes for racing & 1080s for training. Also, I salivate over their pro racing kits!

Reply

KACEE!!! HOW THE HECK ARE YOU!? I was catching up on your blog the other day and wow… you guys have been through so much. Such an amazing little family you have and I’m so happy things are so much better right now! What was your first marathon?

Reply

Doing great! yeah life was a whirlwind there for a couple years :) I know you can relate to trials that turn your life upside down!

my first one was Utah Valley Marathon in 2014. Then Boston 2015. I’m signed up from Utah Valley this year for my third one :)

I come to Utah from time to time, we should get together for a run sometime!

Reply

Oh I would LOVE that! I’ll be at the UV 1/2 marathon this year too… see you then for sure:) I’m so so excited for you! You guys are absolutely amazing and it is so good to hear from you! Thanks Kacee!

Reply

Currently trying the Calderas at your recommendation!! Loving them so far. I have been banished to a boot and only allowed out for 1-2 miles to jog. Unsure if it is a stress fx or tendonitis so the Dr. is letting me ease back in and wear the boot the rest of the day to give things a rest. Fingers crossed!!

Reply

Oh I love the Calderas! I’m glad you love them! BUMMER ABOUT YOUR FOOT… please keep me updated with how it is going Leeann!

Reply

Glad you guys had such a Happy Easter! It was a lovely weekend for me in the foothills of NC! The first time I was ever fitted for running shoes, the Brooks Ravenna were suggested based on my pronation and overall comfort. I also wear Superfeet inserts which make all the difference, in my opinion. I tried a different shoe a few years later, just to be sure I was in the best shoe and yep, they caused blisters in my arch and back to the Ravenna’s I went. It’s the only shoe I run in; the 4-8’s have all worked well for my feet (thank goodness!) I am running the Tarheel 10 Miler this weekend, so my goal this week is to keep the legs loose, sleep well and hydrate. I think watching running on TV is exciting. I am in complete awe at the speeds in which the elites run, so I wish I could have watched Boston today. But I tracked Meb, Des, Galen, Jared, Jordan and @thelonerunner on the BAA app! SO EXCITING!!

Running on TV is NEVER BORING!

This salad debuts every spring, usually starting with Easter. Previously it showed up at all baby and wedding showers. It’s delicious. I made it for a friends gathering (we live overseas so spend holidays with friends and we gather with our favorite foods)
Tortellini Salad:
Cheese tortellini
Strawberries, sliced
blueberries
mandarin oranges
slivered almonds
poppyseed dressing.

I know it sounds weird but it’s a hit and so delicious. In Oregon, it’s even better because, well, Oregon berries!!!!
You have such an interesting running gait!!!

Reply

Okay, I need that salad NOW!! Thank you for sharing Kelly! Have an amazing day!

Reply

I’ve been running in Nikes and New Balance. My instep is high, one foot is almost a half-size larger than the other and my heel is narrow. Throw in the fascia issues and my shoe choice narrows considerably.

It’s funny but Easter doesn’t have any big food ties for me, except for kielbasa which I don’t really eat now. We used to have a traditional breakfast of fresh kielbasa, hard boiled eggs, and horseradish for breakfast (yes, breakfast) at my grandmother’s house. My husband looks at me like I’m nuts but I kind of miss it.

I generally enjoy watching running. I regularly go with friends to cheer at the NYC marathon.

Reply

Brooke looks so cute in her new dress! What the heck are funeral potatoes .. hahaha. We really like tomatoe pie in the area I’m from (suburbs of Philadelphia, its an extremely short radius of towns where people have any idea what this is! haha!), which is something you buy from a specific bakery, not make, but its like a thick cold uncooked pizza type thing ;)

Reply

I didn’t know any Americans made date bars! I’m Canadian, and we make them, and I made them for my Midwestern friends (I work in the US) and they are much less familiar. We also sometimes call them matrimonial cake.
Happy Easter!

Reply

Okay, this just made me smile so big! Just relating over date bars/matrimonial cake with you tonight, I love it!

Reply

Always entertaining. Ross would disagree and anytime I watch it, he will walk in and yell ‘NERD!’ He does like to watch shorter distance running though, but not marathons.

Speaking of marathons, your Easter day sounds like one! Holy moly that is a lot of people to have over and to feed. You deserve an award. I will start making your certificate now.

Reply

Thanks for the review! I have started wearing the 6’s as well and so far really like them! I also alternate with the Launch 4’s. Glad to see you and the fam enjoyed a nice Easter! :)

Reply

used to wear the pure flows and loved how they felt (and looked!), but then got some inquires and noticed they don’t last as long on mileage. *insert–ok, lets be honest, inquiries were more likely from not doing proper cross training and weights and focusing on strengthening weaknesses…*
then the launch came out and the description seemed like the perfect fit for me and how i run, and i haven’t turned back! i love those shoes. but i’m considering getting these for shorter/faster runs…and pink and black is my FAVORITE combo!

Reply

My favorites are Saucony Zealots. I really liked the first and second generations, the third is ok.

My family foods are probably cinnamon rolls or two toned cookies. I’m in Iowa and probably our official state food is the pork tenderloin sandwich. It’s solidly good.
