The rest of the birthday stuff and what I learned about Valentine’s Day!

Before we talk about Valentine’s Day stuff, let’s chat about the rest of yesterday.

The three of us (we get Knox on Wednesday wahooo) went up to Salt Lake City to the City Creek shopping center.

We have a feeling that if we just dress like it is spring and act like it is spring then it will just feel like spring.  So far our scientific theory is working.  I won’t be using this theory for running though because frozen fingers = I quit my run and go right back inside.

Brooke waved at all of the fishes.  We stayed up there for a little bit.  A stop for a few t-shirts had to happen too… I am beyond addicted to Madewell v-neck t-shirts and I think I own every color now.

We got home and picked up the house while Andrew worked on school and then Brooke had a bath.  She was proud of her pruney hands and was quite disappointed when they disappeared.

We then went over to my mom’s house so we could go out for the evening!  Andrew is taking out both Brooke and I  for Valentine’s Day so we wanted a dinner alone yesterday instead of tonight.

IMG 9641

A new exercise for runners that might increase hip flexor strength and knee drive.  I don’t think I will be trying it out anytime but Brooke sure enjoyed it.

And then we were off.

I am all about Italian food for my birthday so we went to try out a new place that we have heard good things about called Oregano’s.  If you are in Utah County, this place was REALLY good but I still slightly like Bona Vita in Lehi a little bit better (if you love Italian food and you are close then you HAVE to go there).

We started off with some Bruschetta.

Andrew had blackened cajun linguine pasta that he loved.

And I had spaghetti and meatballs.  We both brought home enough for lunch today which I am already looking forward to…

We weren’t going to do presents this year but Andrew snuck one in.  WE ARE GOING TO SEE REGINA SPEKTOR!!!  When I have been asked in the past what concert I would go to if I could choose ANY… I would always respond Regina Spektor.  She is coming to Utah on March 31st and I cannot wait to go.

IMG 9649

Even though we had plenty of dessert during the day, we had to get something at night too.  We went to Rockwell to split a sundae and the snickerdoodle and s’mores ice cream that they brought out (topped with hot fudge and graham cracker sauce) was insanely good.  I think I might be full for a while… worth it.

AAF2632B 7330 4A49 84B1 A814BAF245B8

We went back to pick up Brooke and talk to my parents for a little while and I showed Brooke the two songs that I can play on the piano (WHY DID I QUIT PIANO LESSONS… mom, you were right… I regret it).

IMG 9654

And my siblings all called and we chatted for a little bit.

IMG 9661

Brooke gave me some earrings… time to start wearing earrings again:)

PS I tried to find Brooke’s old Valentine’s Day outfit but I couldn’t… ‘single and lovin it!’

PS I forgot to include the link for Lindsey’s new travel blog… it is HERE!!!

——————————————————————

I hope your Valentine’s Day is a great one today!  I remember last Valentine’s Day (2016) quite clearly and I remember I was more single than ever and wondering how in the world a relationship would ever someday work out for me.  I remember thinking it would be great if I had a significant other or to be married but I remember not being super sad because I was single on Valentine’s Day.  I spent the day with my family, Brooke and my friends and actually had a beautiful day.  I can’t say that about all of the previous Valentine’s Days though… there tended to be some crying, my mom taking me out to dinner (Bajios will probably miss us there this year;) and feeling alone.

I do know that I learned one very important lesson over the last few years of life and I finally realized it Valentine’s Day last year.  After many years of HARD V-Day experiences (I mean BAD, I think I could write a book about them) I finally realized that Valentine’s Day for ME really doesn’t have to do with having a significant other.  My favorite memories of Valentine’s Day include doing fun things for Brooke (pink pancakes, little gifts etc), passing out chocolates with my sister’s family on BYU campus to college students, visiting my Grandma or things like that.  Those things had nothing to do with a significant other.  They were just about love.  I think once I realized that I could be happy alone, I started to really enjoy Valentine’s Day (aka last year was the first year I realized that and obviously this year I’m very excited).

SO if you are alone this year and V-day is rough for you (like pretty much all of the V-day’s in my 20s;) just know you aren’t alone in that.  Know that there are a lot of people that feel the same way you do.  BUT the memories I love are from those single/lonely Valentine’s Day’s when I was showing EVERYONE in my life some extra love.

If you need anyone to email with today, I’m here and I am really good at sending you chocolates (I promise I am not a stalker).

I hope you all have a beautiful day filled with so much love and warmth!  I have loved being a part of each other’s life (internet friends are real) over the last 6+ years and I appreciate all the happiness you bring to my life and my family’s life.

Oh and get in a good run today too because chocolate tastes even better after a run.

xoxoxo

If you could choose to go to ANY concert… who would you go see?

Do you wear earrings?

What are your thoughts about Valentine’s Day?  How do you celebrate the day?

What’s your run today?

Everyone I know seems to love Regina Spektor, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of her songs! Clearly I’m behind on that. I love going to Taylor Swift concerts, but I have always wanted to go to a Justin Timberlake concert because I never got to see *NSYNC in concert like I wanted to when I was in middle school/high school.

I don’t care for Valentine’s Day much (especially this year), but I love the discounted candy on Feb. 15!

It sounds like you had a wonderful birthday and Andrew is most definitely a keeper!

I love your take on Valentine’s day and I completely agree – instead of it being focused on another half, it should just be focused on the people we love in our lives. This morning all the girls messaged to say happy Galentines day and I love that! Also, chocolates would be amazing!!

I saw westlife a few years ago and that is the one band I would love to see again! I’m also obsessed with Walking On Cars – I saw them 3 times last year so I’ll try and top that this year!

I’ve got a 40 minute slow run tonight which I’m looking forward to and then it’s interval training tomorrow! Ahh!

Yeah! What an awesome bday gift and a fun day!

I feel really lucky that this is the 12th valentine’s day that I’m spending with Adam. We don’t go all out for the day anymore like we used to, but we do plan something special each year to do together. This year my work schedule is crazy since I have to get up at 5am and am usually exhausted by 7pm, so we are planning to go out this weekend. We’re both really big basketball fans so we’re going to see a Miami Heat game and get dinner in Miami :)

I would love love love to see Regina Spektor. I was supposed to see her once time when I was visiting my Uncle in Germany, but she came down with the flu and had to cancel :(

I wear little stud earrings all the time – but when I take them out I’ll go weeks without because I’m really bad at putting jewelry back on (same for any rings or necklaces I have)

I love your thoughts on valentine’s day! Such a good perspective! My thoughts on Valentines Day are – Meh. I’d rather show my friends and family my love for them on random days :)

Rest day for me – had a recovery run yesterday and a tempo run on the schedule for tomorrow!

It’s taken 30 years but I am finally going to see U2 when they come to Dallas for their Joshua Tree tour. I am beyond excited that the Lumineers are the opening act.

RENE!!! That is SO SO exciting!!! I want to hear all about it. So happy for you!

TBH, I’ve never been big into Valentine’s Day. In high school/college, I preferred it when I was single to having a boyfriend, because I HATED carrying around a rose or cutesy teddy bear. I thought it was embarrassing, plus I didn’t know how to respond. You’re supposed to be thrilled, but it was more like, did he even know me? Anyway, now I have two daughters and guess what? They love Valentine’s Day! Somehow it’s easier to embrace the love and cutesy nonsense for my daughters than it ever was for a boy.

Reply

It’s funny how when you don’t have that special someone, Valentines Day is something you look forward to and put so much importance on….That is at least until you find your true soul mate and they make you feel that way everyday!

I love getting concert tickets for my birthday! I am going to see Lady Gaga in the fall! Pretty happy about that! We got 12 inches of snow yesterday so the run this morning was pretty brutal. Though runs make though runners, right?! Ha

Living in London (U.K.) I’ve managed to fit in a lot of concerts over th years, and I’ve seen all my fav bands on gigs and festivals over the years – several times haha! BUT if I could go back in time and see Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, CCR, The Who, Jimi, Janis etc in their hey day I’d give right arm for that in a heartbeat!

Regina Spektor is amazing, you’ll have a great time! I saw her back in 2009 in Hyde Park and despite it being BOILING in the tent she played in I forgot all about it due to her having such a stage presence.

If I could see any concert, it would be Bruno Mars. I live in a charlotte and he’s coming here this fall!

My favorite earrings are some Kendra Scott ones that I got for Christmas :)

Enjoy your day!

It sounds like such a fun day. I haven’t been to a concert in a while. I am back on the Lady Gaga train but I’m going to a Fleetwood Mac concert soon.

Your thoughts about Valentine’s Day at the end are so sweet. This is also my first year in a long time where I’ve been in a happy relationship, but I still have so many good memories of this holiday over the years (mostly of my mom sending me a card every single year which is super sweet). But in general, I hate Valentine’s Day because I feel like a random Wednesday can be much more special than a holiday dedicated to love and that you should love those in your life like you do on Valentine’s Day every single day.

I am SO jealous you are going to see Regina Spektor! That will be such a good show. Also, your entire Italian dinner looks amazing, but especially that bruschetta.

Have a lovely day!

You make an excellent point about Valentine’s Day, and really most holidays when you feel alone. Finding extra love and giving love to your friends and family makes it so much better. After I got divorced, I dreaded all holidays and was so sad. But I am remarried to an amazing man now. And this morning he reminded me why I love him so much by doing small things. Bringing me my coffee, making the bed so I don’t have to, and planning a special dinner we will cook together. Sunday’s sermon at my church was about finding grace in times of trial and coming out stronger. That hit home for me!

Reply

Megan, I am so so happy that you are doing so well and that you have remarried an amazing man! Sounds like such a sweet day together! Thank you for sharing your Sunday’s sermon. Finding the grace during the tough times helps me SO much!

Reply

Yeah Andrew! I love getting concert tickets for presents :) I love Regina so I hope you have an amazing time!

I feel that way about V Day too. I had a hard couple of V Days before I met my husband but I tried to always be hopeful and was thankful for my friends and my mom who loved me (and vice versa). It is about love today, not necessarily having someone.

I think for dinner tonight I will either make my daughter and I heart shaped pancakes or pizza lol

Happy valentines day and happy belated bday!

Happy Valentines day! I clearly remember last year when you handed out chocolates at BYU and I thought that was so sweet and everyone thought Brooke and Curly were sisters…before you mentioned that, I noticed the picture of Brooke holding your earrings and thought Wow, she looks so much like Curly!

I’m excited for you to see Regina Spektor!! I’ve been to many concerts but the absolute best was seeing Macklemore and Lewis just before the start of the Las Vegas marathon.

Honestly, when I was in high school/college I always kind of hated Valentine’s day. But the year I had my first boyfriend on Valentine’s day, I decided the holiday was fun for little kids, but kind of stupid for people who really cared about each other and after that, being alone didn’t bother me at all. Of course, now that I have been married for 19 years, and the kids have stuff going on, and Valentine’s day falls on a random weekday I really think we have better ways to celebrate each other. Of course, yesterday day, my husband mentioned to a friend at work that he hadn’t planned anything for Valentine’s day yet and his friend said “There’s always a 7-11 on your drive home from work!” I did laugh, but said “No thank you, I’m good”

Reply

HAHA you sure you didn’t want something from 7-11;) Thank you so much for sharing Allison! 19 years of marriage, that is so awesome! I hope you are having an amazing week!

Your reflections are so insightful. Beautiful post. Thank you for the encouragement and showing that love is also found in places you may take for granted (family, friends, etc!)

I would love to see Garth Brooks or George Strait in concert! I do wear earrings a few times a week. Tonight I am hoping to try a new recipe at home…………….dijorno pizza in the freezer in case it doesn’t work out. Today’s run is hopefully somewhere between 8 and 13 miles………………..should be fun!

Tangent…
One day during college, we were having a meet and great on campus with other majors and such, and one of my classmates mom was coming to visit us. This classmate was a little older than a typical student, maybe in her 40’s, just to paint the picture. When she saw her mom coming down the hall she ran into our classroom and put on lipstick. She said her mom always wants to see her with lipstick on. I told her I completely understand, if I saw my mom coming down the hall, I would check to make sure I had earrings in. She says it was such an ordeal getting my ears pierced that she prefers seeing me with earrings. So, yes, I wear earrings 99% of the time.

I would have said my dream concert is Van Morrison. But he recently came to our area and my friends that went were disappointed he didn’t play enough classics, and played his less familiar new stuff. So I also need a time machine with my concert tickets.

Reply

LOVED your tangent!! Keep those earrings on:)

You have such a good heart Janae! <3
Any concert…would definitely be Sublime. Not possible, obviously, but man, would that be cool!
I'm debating my easy 6 mile runch today…treadmill and Netflix? Or sunny but cold run…hmmm

I love Regina Spektor! The Call is one of my favorite songs ever and the first time I even heard of her was that song at the end of the Chronicles of Narnia. I would love to go to a Train concert. I am newly separated on the way to divorce, but I am actually not sad today (he was never good at Valentine’s day anyway). My kids got candy this morning before school and we’ll do something tonight too after the gymnastics and volleyball practices. I get off work early today so I’m going to take my dog on a 12 mile trail run. It’s supposed to be in the 50’s here in Colorado!

Jennifer, I am SO glad that you are doing so well post-divorce. Sounds like the perfect day and I hope your 12 mile trail run in perfect weather was amazing!

Valentine’s Day for me has always been about showing everyone around me some love. Family, friends, coworkers, etc. I think if you pour some creative energy into spoiling the people you do have in your life, you won’t dwell on what’s missing (if you’re single at the moment). Some people say “treat yourself”, which of course I love to do, too, but I think you will be happier on V day if you treat others. It will give you those warm fuzzies you might be looking for.

Reply

Oh you are SO SO RIGHT T.O. It’s crazy how much it helps me to help other people when I am really struggling. It helps more to help other people than to try to help myself. Love what you had to say, it was perfect. I hope you had an amazing day and thank you for the comments, I always love them!

Valentine’s day has always been a chance for me to have some extra love from friends, family and whoever is around you. I feel so related with your thoughts about this day. I’m extremely happy that you started seeing it with day with a more positive point a view and now you have Andrew and Brooke to celebrate <3.

Hope you have an amazing Valentine's Day today Janae! :)

Aw, I love this post and I couldn’t agree more! Valentine’s Day is all about family, friends, and getting to serve other people. My 9 year old told me that it was his favorite day because I made him heart shaped pancakes and heart shaped sandwiches for lunch, bless his little heart. It really is the simple things!

I am a bit obsessed with Ed Sheeran right now, so I would LOVE to see him in concert.

I wear earrings about 1/2 the time, but really only when I wear my hair up, because otherwise, what’s the point?

I still kind of feeling out my knee after a 10 mile run this weekend, my dumb IT band is acting up again. I’m hoping to run a 1/2 on 2/25 so maybe a short run after work.

Reply

I wish I got to see Queen with Freddie Mercury. ah well. I’d like to see Billy Joel, he’s one of my favorites that I haven’t seen.

Valentine’s Day is about love, not just romantic love but friends, family, and love of self. Any holiday after suffering a loss are particularly hard and lonely. But a friend of mine said it beautifully today so I’m copying her post in: “Today isn’t just a day for couples. I am lucky to have love and feel love from so many special people. Love comes to you in different outlets, through different people and at different times. It may not be always be romantic love, but embrace it. Keep what is good for your soul close to you. Love, actually, is all around.”

My husband is teaching music lessons (piano and guitar) until 8pm so we’re having a romantic lunch of chocolate chip pancakes and bacon to celebrate. :) We’ll eat dinner together but by that time we both tend to be pretty hungry so it’s not very romantic.

I love earrings and feel naked without them. Brooke has good taste. ;-)

Happy happy birthday to you, wonderful lady!

Today is my first V-Day alone in quite some time. I am trying not to feel sad about it, and look for some small ways to put love into the world for others today. During lunch I donated blood and it made me think of my Grandfather, towards the end of his life he needed to have transfusions almost every week due to an aggressive cancer. I was hoping my donation will go towards someone who is healing.
I am the most nervous about going home after work today though. To an empty and quiet apartment by myself. Even when I think of that, I cannot help but feel gratitude to have a place to go to, one that feels safe and comfortable. I know there are many others who, very unfortunately, will not have a place like that to go to at the end of the day. So, I am trying to stay upbeat and positive.
I hope the man that I loved, and who I was spending time with this time last year, has someone wonderful in his life. I hope he is doing well and is happy. I wish all things well for him. I miss him today though ,something awful.

You inspire me so much. It makes my heart feel light to read your blog and see all of the love you have with your amazing family! You are such a positive person who has been through so much and has such a giving heart for others. Thank you! It makes me feel better to just write out my thoughts and leave a comment for you from time to time.

Amanda! If you are home tonight and need someone to email with… I’m your woman! At my computer right now:) That is wonderful that you donated blood today and that you are practicing gratitude, you sound absolutely amazing. Thinking about you tonight!

Thank you so so much for your sweet words, they mean a lot to me.

Happy Valentines Day and belated birthday! I am SO JEALOUS about Regina Spektor. She is on my list as well!

I love Valentines Day because it’s an excuse to spread a little extra love :)

Sam Smith! Except I’d want to see him in a smaller venue again and that’s not going to happen anytime soon. I love him so much, because I associate him with a time of my life where I was really struggling, and his music soothed me (and soothed Callum when he was a colicky newborn). I’m a huge music-associating-with-emotions-and-memories girl.

Fun fact: Back when my ex-husband and I were married, he once gave me a kitchen disposal (garborator) for Valentine’s Day. Sigh……

A KITCHEN DISPOSAL!?!?!?!

Oh, I am just like you Suzy! My favorite songs have strong emotions/memories tied to each one. I love Regina because a lot of her music helped me through the hardest times too! I hope that you get to see Sam Smith someday soon again!

I don’t mind Valentines Day. But I have never been super into it besides the candy when I was little haha. I like to go out to a nicer dinner….but I am not super into all the lovey dovey things being purposefully on a certain day for bf/gf. I do like your approach to it though because I think it is a good day to show a little love for everyone in your life and not just a significant other :)

I just saw the band Train last October and I want to see them in concert again! So good!
Valentine’s Day is a pretty mundane for me. But after my husband died I hated it because I hated to see everyone in love. Lol.
Tonight my boyfriend is coming over to cheer me up as I have the flu. I think it’s clearly an indication how much he loves me that he’s putting his health at risk to see me. Secretly hoping he will bring me chocolate though :)

SLC looks beautiful! Love your shoes !! Ah that sunday looks so good, Smores is my favorite ice cream!
I used to not leave the house without earrings in because it just felt like I wasn’t fully dressed! But now that I live in the jungle I really don’t wear earrings here at all. I’m sure once I move back to the states I’ll get back into it. I’ve never cared too much either way about V-day.. but I’ve been single for it almost every year, haha! Last year I broke up with my bf about a week or two before Valentines and someone asked me “why didn’t you just wait till after?” haha!

I have ALWAYS disliked Valentine’s Day!! There.Said it. Enough is Enough. Why does any one have to be “so called” told to tell another they love them, buy them gifts, go out to eat…etc..etc…etc…don’t get me started but I really dislike the idea behind the marketing crap!

You have 364 days to say or do something that shows you love me…it does not have to be on 2-14.

OK..I am done…love ya! ha!

Love YA right back:) I loved what you had to say and completely agree… we’ve got EVERY day each year to show our loved ones that we care!

Thanks for the valentine’s day comments. Every other year (or almost) of my adulthood I have felt sad for no coupledom. But this year, I feel at peace. I sent some of my best friends little notes last week – I think that’s a tradition I am going to expand for next year. Love of all kinds is important, and if this is the kind of love I have in my life, then I should spread it around!

I am SO glad that you felt at peace this year! I had that same experience last year where I was used to being sad and suddenly felted comforted and peaceful! Love that tradition of yours and I am going to copy you! Thanks Rebecca!

For me, Valentine’s has never been a special day. I think that helps now since i’m in a long distance relationship.

I celebrated Valentine’s Day by third-wheeling with my brother and his girlfriend, haha. I gave them privacy during dinner at our place, but then they made a pizookie and, well, my self-consciousness about interrupting their date went out the window.

My run today was 1 mile – my first since Saturday!! My IT band has been swollen and hurting for days. But that 1 mile was completely pain-free during and after, so I’m reallllly hoping that means I’ll be able to start getting back into running this weekend! If not, I fear that my dessert addiction might start catching up with me…
