Why I have always taken as many pictures as possible and a surprise for my family—> Legacybox

Happy Wednesday!!!  Today’s post is sponsored by Legacybox and I’ve got a 40% off deal for you at the end of the post!  We kind of like pictures over here!  I currently have 35k on my phone as we speak:)  I have been super excited to send my siblings digital copies of our family pictures and memories.  My mom only had one copy of most of these pictures and videos.

On the car ride down to St. George last Friday Brooke and Knox were not interested in watching the iPad or playing with toys.  They wanted stories from us.  They even wanted some of the stories we told them, repeated over and over again.  It’s not like we first started dating a crazy long time ago, but it sure was sweet to think about all of those different memories and of course Andrew’s perspective on them too.  Parts of a few of the stories that we told the kiddos on the way to the race:

*We told them about our first date together.  Andrew’s version included how he lost his wallet (he was pretty embarrassed about that), how he got a car wash even though it was raining before he picked me up and how he loved that I ate a good amount of food and ordered my own dessert.  I had my sister do my hair and makeup for our first date.  I changed my outfit about 10 times before he came to pick me up.  I think I talked a million words per minute and felt SO SO relieved when on our drive home he brought up that we should go trail running together sometime.  Oh and then when he sent a text after he dropped me off… yeah, I was pretty happy about that.

*The first time I met Knox was when I dropped off cookies to Andrew and cute little Knox peaked around the corner at me:)  The first time Brooke met Andrew was when I conned Andrew into coming over to help me lift a huge box up the stairs for me…. I could have lifted it up the stairs but it sure was a good excuse for him to come over:)  Brooke was playing with her friend during this whole thing but she saw him.  She came over and said hi and then ran back to her friend.

*The proposal story, the kids wanted to hear this one over and over again.  After Andrew said that he got down on his knee and asked me to marry him, Knox yelled, “AND THEN WHAT DID YOU SAY JANAE.”   Hahaha I said yes:)

*The first time the kids met each other—>  we went to chick-fil-a and then back to my apartment.  They played for hours in Brooke’s room.

*The time that Andrew and I ran the Utah Valley Half Marathon together (HE PR’D) and he even made a stop in the porta potty at mile 6.  The porta potty was not on completely flat ground so when he went in a little too fast (he knew he was on track for a fast race and didn’t want to waste time) he thought it was for sure going to tip over while he was in there.  Can you even imagine if that happened?!?  PS someone let us know we were in the UVM race movie… this was from the finish line:

All of the memories are why I love pictures so much and have an insane amount of them on my phone/computer.  I love all of the sweet memories that pictures and videos bring.  I love how you can come across a picture and all of the sudden you have the whole story of what happened playing in your head.  I swear I don’t have the best memory myself and I forget things a little too fast but the second I see a picture then I instantly remember that time of life.  This can be a very good thing with this blog and a bad thing ha!  Some of those years in there were nuts.   It’s been six years of blogging and while I have all of those memories (aka every second of Brooke’s life;) as digital copies, I sure have a TON of pictures that are not digital copies from pre-blogging days.  I want to keep and preserve those pictures forever so I can keep seeing them over and over again and share them with our kids.

Going through all of my mom’s photo albums and seeing pictures that I haven’t seen forever was so much fun.  I sure look up to these siblings of mine and I don’t see them nearly enough (besides my sister).

Legacybox makes it possible for you to preserve any format of outdated memories,  everything from VHS tapes to Super 8 film, digitally so you can relive these memories over and over again.  I was super excited to make it so  everyone in my family could have an awesome digital copy of the pictures that we have just one copy of at my parent’s house.

Legacybox sends you a kit that you fill with your old pictures/VHS tapes/slides/any format you want and then you send it (it is pre-paid) back to them!  The kit that Legacybox sends to you includes a guide, round-trip shipping, crush proof box and personal concierge so you can talk to an expert any time.  After you send it in you’ll receive your originals back along with the DVDs and digital files!

PS you can see the barcodes in the above picture, those along with online order tracking ensures your memories will stay safe throughout the whole process.  Legacybox sends you emails along the way to keep you updated with the whole process too.  Your memories are safe with them!

Some of the pictures I sent in to Legacybox of my life!!!

**My sister and I with curly hair (it took a whole lot of gel and hairspray to get my hair to do that), the good ol’ cheerleading days, 10th grade, my sister died my hair blonde, student government pictures from my senior year, cousins and my mom holding Brookie when she was just a few days old.  I was so beyond happy that my mom flew in to be there when Brooke was born.

PS I am pretty sure my hair style has not changed (well, I dyed my hair different colors) in the last 18 years of my life.  Change is hard for me, ha.

My mom had some pretty incredible VHS tapes that she couldn’t wait to get on DVDs so she could share them with the whole family and put them online for them.  Brooke clearly was too.  Or maybe she was just excited to be with grandma.

These two tapes have some amazing memories on them!!!

Just a few weeks later Legacybox sent the DVDs and digital files (along with the original copies) right on over to me!

Our first stop with the DVDs was to Mer’s house!!!  The kid’s LOVED watching all of the clips of their grandma as a little girl:)  My grandpa took his big ol’ video camera all over the place to capture movies of everyone and we are sure glad he did! MY grandma just has a DVD player in her front room now so it has been a very long time since she last watched these movies.

My Mer.  I was so excited to share these memories with her.

This picture is of my amazing grandpa, he passed away 14 years ago.  My grandma and grandpa’s love for each other was the absolute sweetest.   My grandpa was an amazing teacher, fantastic coach, wonderful and caring counselor, effective vice principal but most of all a world class family man.  He loved his family!  Everyone loved him too!

We sure miss him.

After my grandma’s house we took the digital files over to my sister’s house to go through with her kids.  My niece looked like a little doll when she was a baby.  THAT HAIR!!

AND CURLY!!! I started blogging about her not too much later than when this picture below was taken.  They were pretty excited to go through all of these old memories and pictures from before they could even remember.  We then sent out digital copies of the pictures to my brothers to enjoy!  They are full of pictures they probably haven’t seen forever.

Excited for all of the memories and millions of pictures I’ll keep taking along the way up ahead in our future!!

Oh my goodness–how do you have SO many pictures on your phone?! I definitely would have to buy more storage for that. I’m not always the best about taking a lot of pictures, and most of my pics are either of me with my sister or with my friends at Rangers games.

That picture of you and Andrew at the finish line of the half is ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE. :)

HAHA I don’t know how I have so many on there… it pretty much is the only thing on my phone I guess?! Hey, those sound like really great pictures to have! Thanks Natalie and enjoy the rest of your day!

I used to take so many pics of my kids before they started preschool and added it to our private blog daily but now with them in school most of the day/week, I do it weekly (of them mostly and our family) and still love it so much. I try and upload and delete from my phone weekly and also use an app called Collect where I add a photo a day. I love looking back at them.

I LOVE the idea of a private blog to keep all of your kids pictures on there!! I will be copying you and getting Collect and having a photo of the day for our family. Such a good idea!!

I don’t take nearly enough pictures. I’m trying to find the balance of living in the moment and making sure to capture enough memories for when my little man gets older.

I never really knew either set of my grandparents, so when my husband and I were dating I chose to adopt his step-grandparents. Event though his step-grandfather has passed away now, his Grandma Jean is living with my in-laws and gets to see her great-grandson once a week. It makes me so happy that my little boy has three grandmas, two grandpas, and a great grandma.

Reply

Finding that balance is absolutely key right?!? Something I CONSTANTLY need to be working on. Oh I love that you adopted your husband’s step-grandparents. Your little boy is so lucky to have so many people that love him to death!

Janae! Random question….but what size hyrdo flask do you use?

HEY YOU! I have the 40 oz one and I LOVE it. It doesn’t fit in the car cupholder but you can buy one on Amazon to hold it in the car:) Let me know if you get one and love it as much as I do! Have a great day Melanie!

Oh my gosh! I got SO excited when I got the notification that you had replied! Lol. I’m a nerd! But I’ve been reading your blog for a few years now (and have twin girls the same age as Brooke, so I’ve connected with your story so much. When you got engaged….I kept almost telling people that my “friend” just got engaged because I was excited….then I’d remember that that sounds crazy so I would refrain lol. Thanks for replying!

Reply

Well your comment just made me so excited!!! Thank you for following along and being such a good friend (hey, internet friends are the best)! TWIN GIRLS… I bet you have your hands full!!! Thanks Melanie and have the best day ever!

Love this! I take soo many pictures! I really need to convert my old vhs tapes to digital files to share with my family. Such a great idea!

Yep, it really is! PS I LOVED your post about probiotics… my favorite supplement too!!!

Most of my pictures are of nature and bae at the worst time possible (best time=mid bite).
I come from a blended family and it is tough at times but also so amazing.

Reply

HAHAH sounds like perfect pictures on your phone:) Hey, thanks for letting me know about your blended family success (with the tough stuff too). I really want to do my absolute best with this blending business so I love hearing how amazing it is! Thank you!

I keep getting a notice from apple that I need to upgrade my storage. haha I take a lot of pictures mostly of my son!
How sweet that you put all of your mom’s pics to electronic. My parents are divorced and the one without any pics would LOVE this!! If only the other one would let me take them and send them in!! Knox and Brooke are so cute! That is adorable how they love hearing those stories!!! LOVED the race one! Almost tipping over?!? I can’t even imagine!

Reply

HAHAH YEP… I get that notice all of the time too (but I’m too lazy to upgrade). Pictures of kids is the absolute best! HAHA right? He was so freaked out it was going to tip! I bet you are so excited to see your family soon and do the Halloween half wahoo!!! Enjoy the rest of your day girl!

Before Hope was born, I think most of my pictures were selfies of me running and food because I wrote a running food blog that I never made public.

Reply

YOU DID!?! I need to be able to read your blog! Do you still write it? Miss you and hope you are having a beautiful day!

I found an old album a few weeks ago of a visit we made to see my grandparents in California 20 years ago. It was great to see them and remember stuff that we did that I’d completely forgotten about.

Reply

Okay, I bet that was so beyond special to come across that album with your grandparents in it from so long ago. Hope your Wednesday is a good one!

I take pictures and videos of my son all the time! It takes up so much space on my phone that I have to constantly transfer those photos and videos onto my laptop so frequently. Although I snap a lot of photos, I need to work on actually printing some out!

Reply

Isn’t it crazy how just a decade ago we only printed our photos and now they are all on our phones?? I need to print more pics out too… like our wedding photos oops! Thanks Polly and hope the rest of your day is a great one!

I never took many pictures until having kids. Now I take ALL of the pictures! My phone is pretty new, and it already has 500 photos on it. Yikes.

My grandparents are the best. My Grandpa worked for NASA, and was Vice President of Pan Am airlines. But like your grandpa, his legacy was being the best to his family. We named my oldest son after him, and I really wish they could have met! But toddler Thomas loves hearing about Grandpa Thom.

Reply

HAHA right?! Kids bring out the photographer in us all right?! WOW, your grandpa sounds absolutely amazing! I love that you named your son after him. Love it.

We spent 2 weeks in Europe this year for our 25th anniversary and took over 2500 pictures! I love going back and revisiting old memories. Would have loved using Legacybox a few years ago when I scanned all my family pictures – it was a huge project but so worth it. Love having everything digitized.

I don’t have a lot of pictures on my phone – no room, but they are automatically uploaded to Dropbox so I don’t lose them.

Reply

Oh I seriously LOVE that you guys did that Kathy! I am SO happy you have so many pictures to remember it all by! Oh I bet that took forever to scan them all… but so nice to have them now! Hope you had a beautiful run today!

I have too many photos on my phone! I always have to delete them (after they are uploaded to Google Drive, of course!) They are mostly of my 2 year old son and our dog, haha. Other photos are pictures of food and runs for IG, haha.

I recently joined Ancestry and I have learned so much about my family! My Mom’s dad and My Dad’s Mom’s parents are both from Italy! And my Mom’s mom and Dad’s dad are french canadian, how funny, right!? I’m actually waiting for my ancestry dna results because I’m so curious to know how much Italian, French and whatever I may be!

Reply

Christine, that is so so awesome that you just joined Ancestry! I LOVE learning about everything about my family in the past. Keep enjoying that. Sounds like all the best pictures are on your phone:) Enjoy the rest of your day!

Oh wow, this legacy sounds awesome. I’ve never felt save trusting anyone with originals. But we have so many VHS tapes of family who has passed on, or original photo’s that really need to have a copy/digital copy. I just may have to try them. I have soooo many picture’s of not only us, but my whole family. I’m the amateur photographer in our family, so I’m the ONLY one with a copy of these previous photo’s, and if my hard drive fails…..nope don’t say it! I think should go on my high priority list. Thanks for sharing.

Reply

Let me know how it all goes! Oh I bet you feel a lot of responsibility being the only one in your family with all of those copies! Good luck Michele!!!

Reply

This is such an awesome idea! I take soo many pictures, especially now that my son is here! My phone is filled with pictures for my blog and pictures of his squishie little face. I love the ease of storing photos digitally, but nothing beats actually having photos filed in an album.
Side note: that story about Andrew almost tipping over the port-a-potty is hilarious. That is like my worst nightmare! ;)

Reply

So sweet!

Reply

So cool that you were in the Utah Marathon movie together! Funny how you look super happy even though you had just run 13.1 miles… ;)

Reply

I hate to say this but I was super excited about Legacy box the last time you wrote about it and I bought one right away. I was MAJORLY disappointed. It ended up taking almost 6 months and was very stressful as they sent my box to the wrong address the first time, and then forgot about sending it again (it took me calling them 2x to get them to send it). I hope everyone has a better experience than I did, but I would be nervous to send them my memories again :-(

Reply

Oh my goodness that very same thing happened to me, it was a nightmare. I hope they have got their ducks in order now. :))

Reply

Just placed my order through your link. Excited to begin a christmas gift for my grandparents! My grandpa has Alzheimers and I think the videos can help him feel like family again.
