Arizona running, what the rest of the crew is up to and YOUR running accomplishments!

Arizona running (other than during the summer months) is one of my favorites.

Near where we are staying they have miles and miles of canals with dirt and paved paths right next to them.  They are flat as can be, carless and make it easy to avoid getting lost because you just follow the canal.  It’s really nice to not have to think much about traffic/directions/etc at all along the way.

I didn’t run with any sort of GPS or with headphones yesterday but was out for about 65 minutes of running.   It’s kind of fun not knowing your distance once in a while.

This picture made it appear like I have a calf muscle which I was pretty excited about.

Got back to Megan’s sister’s house to the pebble ice maker.

Andrew, we really need to install one of these at our house.

IMG 9905

We then hit up our favorite store Last Chance and I bought a pair of $8 sneakers which was exciting.  The girls also introduced me to a new even more comfortable/cute pair of moto leggings that I will be sporting for the rest of forever.  So crazy soft and I got the maroon ones.

IMG 9913

We grabbed lunch from Sauce and along with my turkey salad I had the tomato soup which is one of my all-time favorites.  One of my brothers told me the other day that he doesn’t like soup and I am still confused by how one could not like soup.  He needs to try this soup.

IMG 9914

For dinner we went to Oregano’s (a must if you are ever in Arizona) and then we saw Miss Peregrine’s!

Best part of Oregano’s:

I’ll be coming home to the crew today but since I’ve been gone they’ve done a lot of cuddling with Beretta.

IMG 9919

Andrew and Brooke had a date Tuesday night (before Knox came home on Wednesday) and they went to a play place, bought a craft for her to paint and made cookies together.  She was in heaven.

IMG 1201

PS the recipe for these cookies:

1 cup sugar

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup butter melted

Mix

2 eggs

Mix

2 tsp vanilla

2 tsp water mixed with one tsp baking soda

3 cups flour (I usually mixa one cup at a time)

3/4 bag of chocolate chips (ghirardelli)

Bake at 350 for exactly ten minutes.  Take them out and let them finish cooking on the pan.   I like the dough chilled for at least an hour but they are still good when you don’t.

IMG 9920

And most importantly, Andrew and the kids went camping!

Thank you for all the awesome comments on my sister’s post yesterday.  She is pretty amazing.

We’ve been pretty close from the very beginning.

LOVING all of your race accomplishments!! Thank you for sharing and if you want to share yours then send it in to [email protected]

HONOR!!!  “I’m proud I place first in my age group in the Twin Cities Marathon last Sunday and with a PR! I learned there were 51 women over 70 registered for the race, including an 88-year-old.  However, the results show only 4 finished in the female 70-74 age group, and only one, ME, in the 74-79 age group!!  My time was a 5:37:31.  There was a 6-hour course cutoff which had me a bit worried as last year in the NYC Marathon I had a desperate potty stop in mile 8 that had me standing in a line of about 12 people.  My time for that mile ended up being about 23 minutes.  After that, I threw my pace band away and just focused on enjoying the race and finishing.  My time was 6:09.  But this year I’ve been running strong and shaved nearly 2 minutes off my Dallas Marathon time of Dec. 2014, my previous PR.  As I didn’t start running until I was 72, I’m very pleased that I am continuing to improve my speed.  I’ve done 13 half marathons and now 4 marathons since 2012.  I posted on FB that the NYC was to be my last marathon… until I signed up for the Twin Cities Marathon.  Someone asked me yesterday, “When is your last marathon?”:)

ALYSSA!!!  “This past weekend I completed my first FULL marathon!!! Because of little injuries here and there, my longest training run was only 5 miles, so I was really worried if I could even make it or not… but I did it! It was the Portland Marathon and it rained every single step of the way.  I had the BEST support crew out there! My mom, dad, and boyfriend were able to find me SIX different times along the course! Since I wasn’t going for any kind of speed record, I was able to stop and take pictures/give hugs to them along the way.  They really are the sweetest and I had an amazing time, despite not being able to walk the next few days! This picture is from meeting up with my mom around mile 11.:)”

STEPHANIE!!!  “After evacuating my home for Matthew, I needed some motivation.  So I skipped my long run scheduled for that weekend and signed up for a random local 5k.  I hadn’t been training for speed and it had been two years since I had raced a 5k.  I’ve also had two major injuries since then and was nervous about old pain flaring up.  On top of that, this was only my second attempt at racing since I lost the best running partner/big brother in the world.  But I wanted to… actually, I NEEDED to try, so I went out there and just decided to give it my all.  I couldn’t believe the results! The whole time I was like “how in the world is my body going this fast!”  I felt so strong and free and was shocked that on a hilly course, this FL girl was flying (or what felt like it haha).  I ended up getting 2nd overall female and finishing in 23:10.  I wondered the whole time “what am I actually capable of? I haven’t even been training.  What gifts has the LORD given me that I’m not even using?”  The whole experience was amazing and reminded me how much I love racing.  I have new goals now and can’t wait to see what happens next on my crazy, running journey.  #allJESUS

ARTHI!!!  “I ran the Chicago Marathon recently and crushed it way beyond what I ever thought was possible! It was my 8th marathon and my second time running Chicago.  MY PR a couple years ago was 3:52 and my first 5 or so marathons were in the 4:15-4:25 range.

This year… I ran a 3:40:32!!!  I never in a million years thought I would run that kind of race! I trained hard… Put in the work all summer… And am so happy about my results.  There is nothing sweeter than running faster, stronger, and better than your younger/skinnier/unhealthier self:)  Goal for next year:  BQ! I’m so close!!”

————————————————————————

KIM!!!  “Ok so today I completed my first ever 1/2 marathon at the Melbourne Marathon in Australia.  This time last year I was starting a C25K program with my local new running club; ha and now I coordinate the start to run program!  So the run was really windy, but to finish on the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) had me tearing up.  Not many people get to go onto the ground so it was pretty special.  I finished 11 mins faster than I expected as I’d been sick with vertigo leading up to the run so I’m extremely happy with that result.”

————————————————————————

JILL!!! “I competed in my first ever trail event! I’m based in Hong Kong now and it’s called the moontrekker!  I did the 30km, was more like 35, as a pair with my buddy, Caroline.  She was injured, but pushed through.  We came in as first female pair :)  in just over 6 hours.  This photo is from the top of Lantau Peak, second highest peak on our island.  A 1000 meter straight up!  Myself, Caroline and our friend, Phil.”

INES!!!  “I have been an avid runner for a few years now but for some reason never signed up for any races until last year.  My previous 5 half marathons I usually finished in about 2:08.  After having a really tough and painfully slow race back in May I was very nervous about the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services Half Marathon.  But all my worries were for no reason:  I set a good pace in the beginning and kept it up throughout the whole race.  In the end I finished in 1:55:05! Not only did I set a PR but I never hit the wall and finished strong with a sprint.  At the finish line I was greeted by my soon-to-be husband who also PRed in the 10k.  Clearly we both had the best run ever.  It must be the excitement building up for our run through wedding at the Rock ’n’ Roll Las Vegas half marathon next month.”

Those Moro leggings are really fun. I still like the blush roolee ones you recommended. I always get a ton of compliments on them!

I loved Phoenix when I went out for the marathon last year. I think it would be such a fun place to train and run.

That looks like such a fun trip! I’ve never actually been to Arizona (I need to get out more), but you make it sound like a pretty cool place.

We have been having some really humid (and HOT) mornings lately, but today was a bit cooler because it was raining. We don’t get much of a fall here (Texas), but it would be nice if we had some of those clear and crisp autumn days pretty soon before it gets cold.

What amazing set of running accomplishments! Alyssa I can’t believe you ran the marathon with a long run of only 5 miles. You must have the most awesome fitness base ever!

ARTHI!!! Way to go and so awesome to see another Team PAWS member around here :).

Thanks, Kristina!! It was my first time running Team PAWS and I LOVED it!!

Age difference between me and my 2 full sisters: 18 months (I’m the middle child). There’s a five year gap between me and my oldest half sister, and a ten year gap between me and my youngest half sister. Oddly, I would say I’m closer to my half sisters, despite the age gap.

Love all of the running accomplishments :) It’s always great to get inspiration for amazing women!

I’ve run races in Copenhagen and Vancouver, but I would love to do more!

Siblings: I have one sister who’s three years older.
Now is the perfect time to run in Montana. Yesterday was 57 degrees and gorgeous!

If you love the moto style, you need to check out the knickers and full length moto tights from Oiselle! They are fleecy on the inside and so comfy for running and lounging! http://www.oiselle.com/shop/running-bottoms/new-moto-lesley-knickers

Oh my gosh, Curly looks EXACTLY like her mom!! So fun!
I have a brother 2 years younger and a sister 6 years younger.
I just bought moto leggings too and still trying to figure out how I feel about them. But they’re cute and olive colored.

EIGHT DOLLAR SNEAKERS!?!? I want to go to this store!

I’m four years older than my oldest sibling. And the running weather here in South Florida is way nicer than it was during summer. It wasn’t like that at this time of the year last year, but I won’t complain:)

I’m jealous you were in AZ! My family has been in AZ since Mesa was founded so I’m an AZ girl through and through. We recently moved and it’s been tough not being around all my family and friends. It’s hard to pick one month, I’d say October-November and then Mar-April are my favorite months to run in AZ. Looks like Andrew did a great job holding down the fort while you were gone!

I live in Arizona and LOVE the running here. The canals do make it very easy, but my favorite places to run are the mountains surrounding the city. We also have the greatest races. My personal favorite is The Lost Dutchman Marathon in February. Cool temperatures, amazing scenery and the race proceeds go to local kids. It’s the best!

Can I get the details (brand etc) on that ice maker?? I’ve been wanting to buy one for a really long time but get overwhelmed every time I start reading about all the options.

Reply

I have a brother who is 3 years older.
It’s in the 60s today going up to 70 but apparently next week we’ll have highs in the mid 50s. PERFECT RUNNING WEATHER!
I have lots of relatives who live in AZ. I had to run 16 miles once when visiting them (training for a marathon) and it was so hot I only made it 12 miles and did the last 4 on a dreadmill at my hotel. :)

Congrats to all on those great running accomplishments! Love to see those happy race reports!
Janae – LOVE your Boston shirt! Was that a shirt from a vendor (Brooks, Adidas) or from another vendor? I would love to find one like it.

Omg is that a baked brownie with ice cream? Yum!

My brother and I are only 14 months apart!
I have never been in a race outside of Canada but I am hoping to do one of the Disney half or full Marathons sometime soon!!
The running weather here is downpour rain…. so pretty much I don’t have to shower after my runs!!

Reply

My brother and I are 3 and 1/2 years apart.

I did a race in Toronto, which was pretty fun. (and the same time zone for me which made things easier).

We had some freakish warm weather but we’re back to normal today. High 60’s today and it’s overcast. Pretty good weather for a run!

Arizonan here! I love running in the fall and early spring. Running is pretty awesome here year round, except for May through mid-September. I don’t normally run the canals, but there are a lot of awesome parks and trails for running. Glad you had fun in this awesome state! Next visit, you should definitely try Pizzeria Bianco. Amazing food and well worth the possible 2 hour wait.

I have 3 sisters. I am 8 years older than my younger sister, and 2 and 6 years younger than my older sisters.

First, I was already planning to make chocolate chip cookies tonight and was so pumped when I saw your recipe on here today!! It’s like fate!!!
It is fun that your sister posted for you for an off day. I have 4 sisters and 1 brother (I the 2nd child) and the ages range from 27 to 7 years between oldest and youngest… the last two are way younger than the rest of us but we definitely love them! I sent my 4 younger siblings each a tube of halloween candy last week since I cannot be with them for Halloween. We try to find fun ways to stay in touch and be in each others’ lives.
The running weather where I am is great right now! It is *finally* feeling like fall here and I ran this morning in shorts, a long sleeve shirt, and a vest and it was perfection! As they said on the radio station I listen to on my way into work, happy Friday-eve!

Ok, what brand is that ice maker, I need that in my life!!

I am so jealous of all the fun you have every day.

I might have to give that cookie recipe a shot! Looks great! And those leggings…brah. those are so cute!
Weather here in Chicago is strange…warm then cold then humid… keeping us on our toes!

My sister and I have a 7 year age gap! It’s starting to feel less significant, but trust me…it was like living in two different worlds (generations really). I was 13 when she was 20 soooo yea, two different worlds indeed. But the age gap is starting to close now that we’re both getting older and I’m approaching 30 (sigh…), and I love it! She recently gave birth to a baby girl and being an aunt has also brought me closer to her. How times change!

Honor, You are amazing and I loved your story. ALL of the girls running accomplishments are so wonderful to read!!

I love AZ and ran my marathon PR there!

I live a hop skip and jump from Last Chance and have never gone. Maybe I will do that this weekend. The Oregano’s skillet cookie is the BEST EVER!!

Hi!
I’m from Arizona and have only run the canals once. I do like trail runs which aren’t too far which is nice. Right now, the weather is beautiful in the mornings. Afternoon, not much lol. Give us a few weeks and we should be having some nice weather all day.
Love Oreganos, especially the Vino Bambino salad. Its huge!

I have lots of siblings so we have quite the age difference between the youngest and the oldest:)

Going to go look at those leggings. I’ve never been into leggings before, but am getting tired of wearing jeans all the time. Thanks for the link!

I took up running 3 yrs ago at age 43 & thought I was “too old”. Honor, you blow my mind!!! Seriously, you are just amazing!
And Alyssa ran a full marathon for the 1st time (in the rain!) w/ 5 mi. being her longest training run… what the WHAT??? Girl, you rock!
Janae, I love these running accomplishments posts so much! They are so inspiring… every single one of them.

Haha thanks, Michelle!! I was VERY excited about that finish!

Aaaggghhh you were in my neighborhood when you went to last chance!
I run along the canals all the time. Since I live near the Biltmore area running through there is one of the most gorgeous places you can run around and not feel like you are in the middle of the city. And hills for days!!! Great works on the canal as well as (literally) steps away from it!
You enjoyed some great parts of Phoenix. Next time you should go to Sweet Republic for ice cream AMAZING!!

Reply

I’m in Arizona, tucked next to a mountain. No canals but plenty of trails and hills. You are here at the start of the perfect running season. Soon the morning will cool down a bit more and hoards of runners will come out of heat hibernation. When the rest of the country are dusting up their traditional mills we in Arizona are putting them to good use as a clothes hanger. Lol.
Next time your here I’ll direct you to some grateful trail runs.

This post makes me so happy – All of those running accomplishments! I just completed my 3rd half-marathon this past weekend (in OH). The weather has cooled significantly since then, and this weekend we will have great running weather (mid-fifties).

LOVE Phoenix ❤️ Some of my family lives there and I have been visiting them since childhood. I wish I knew where those canals were, I will be out there next year for a few weeks during my first mararhon training and I never know where to run at! If you get the chance while you are out there make the drive up to Jerome for the day. Ugh so beautiful and all of the local shop owners are just the sweetest people. Check out the “haunted” hotels restaurant for one of the best meals of your life :)

Ahh I LOVED the Pizookie at Oregano’s!! I went to school in Tempe and that was one of my favorite stomping grounds :)

Thanks for the shoutout!!

Middle of three — I have an older sis that’s a year older and a younger brother that’s 4 years younger.

We are not close :( Sadly…

It’s crazy weather here in NC — it’s chilly in the mornings 50-60 but hot by the afternoons – mid-80’s.

Reply

I lived in Tucson for 4.5 years and that is where I started running. I miss Reid Park and the Rillito! I moved to Colorado in July of last year, but I had a baby in January so I didn’t do any running over the winter, so we’ll see how that goes this year. Winter running in AZ was definitely my favorite thing ever.

Reply

haha your brother and I have something in common. I’m not a soup fan either! I’ll force myself to have it sometimes when I had a cold, but just have never been a fan. I think it’s the loads of sodium that’s in it.
