18 Miles and Some Important Thursday Tangents!

It turns out that running 16 miles in ridiculous heat last week is a million times harder than running 18 miles in almost fall-like weather yesterday morning.  These girls are the best for meeting mid-week for a long run together.  I don’t really remember how to do a long run on my own anymore while last year, when I was training for the St. George Marathon, all I did was solo long runs.  Well, my dad was with me for most of those long runs as he followed me in his jeep and passed me water bottles and gatorade just when I needed them.

I had these two for the first 14 miles of the run and we talked the entire time and could not get over how much better it felt outside yesterday.  I felt slightly chilly when I first got out of my car yesterday morning which is my FAVORITE running temperature.  I’m sure it will heat right back up for a few weeks but any run that feels like fall weather is the best kind of run.  Although, I probably need as many hot long runs as possible in preparation for the St. George Marathon.  There have been years where the temps were in the 90s at the end of the race but it usually ends in the 65-85 (F) degree range.  Let’s hope for those lower temps to be a thing this year.

When I really think about it… it’s kind of weird that I chose to spend 2.5 hours of my Wednesday early morning running around the roads of Utah with my two gal pals.  Right?  It’s weird what we do but we are sure all a tad addicted to it.

My last mile was a 7:40 (which is fast for me right now at the end of a long run), I was pretty excited about.  I was still sore from bootcamp two days previously but other than that, I felt like I could have kept going but wanted to get back before Brooke woke up.  20 miles next week!

IMG 4223

I think I am going to convert over to using a handheld water bottle.  My friend (she ran a 2:56 at St. George) carries one for every race and workout/long run to help her stay hydrated.  I think I might have to copy her because I feel like I never get in enough water during a marathon because 75% of each cup ends up on my shirt/face/street.

IMG 4213

Until I get mine, I’ll just rely on this beautiful water fountain that provides the coldest water for me multiple times a week.

I feel like it has been some time since the last time I shared a bunch of tangents with you and now is as good as time as ever:

*Brooke has become very good at pretending she is a baby again.  She never sucked her thumb as a baby but makes sure to do it whenever she pretends she is a baby.

IMG 4243

*A fun new thing that Andrew has taught Brookie—> run through the sprinklers as much as possible.

IMG 4293

*I don’t know what to say.  Both items are beyond delicious (remember when I used to use Swedish Fish as my running fuel) on their own but I just have no idea how I feel about the combination of them.  Somebody please try them and let me know.

Screen Shot 2016 08 10 at 9 47 52 AM

*You can’t really tell in this picture but Utah had a random thunder and lighting storm and we were out in it for a minute.

IMG 4337

*The kids both fell asleep in the car last night so Andrew and I grabbed DQ and sat and ate it in the car.

Our kind of date:

IMG 4345

*It’s all about developing some fatigue resistant muscles and efficient running economy… LOVE this video from last year about what happens to the body during a marathon!  Women’s Olympic Marathon is on SUNDAY!

*Came across this picture of Andrew and I attempting to surf at the same time.  It didn’t last long.

IMG 3217

*Brooke told me yesterday (*multiple times*) that Beretta needs a brother pup.  Just some dog kisses to start off the day.

TBT to Swedish Fish! They used to be a staple on your blog!

Running hot races is the worst. I just try to distract myself with music/podcasts and run under the shade as much as possible. Every time there is a tree I dodge under it … which is probably why my races end up long! :D

I just recently got a Nathan handheld and I love it! You don’t even really have to grip it, it just hangs on your hand. It’s come in handy in the Alabama heat this summer. Candy corn is my go-to sugar running fuel! I don’t know how I feel about the combination of sweedish fish and Oreos either. Sounds odd? interesting? I ran Boston in 2012 when it was 90+ degrees at the start. I was NOT prepared and I didn’t handle it very well. I should’ve adjusted my pace goals from the beginning, but I wasn’t that smart back then. You live. You learn.

I have used gummy bears as fuel before, and I’m pretty sure I will do so again if I increase the mileage that much. But Swedish Fish Oreos?! That just sounds so wrong.

I live in Texas, so I’ve definitely had some hot races. I think the worst temperature has been 98 at the start with a heat index of 100-something. Needless to say, it was a pretty brutal one. While I’m not a fan of cold weather any other time, I don’t mind a race that is in the 40s or 50s.

Reply

I’ve used the amphibian water bottle forever, and I love it. Mine had a little zipper pocket on the outside which I would put some gummies in ;). My first one was of the Nathan brand and water would splash out.
I saw those oreos at the store the other day. I’m not sure if they would be the best thing ever or be really strange.

A tangent, hmmm I can’t think randomly under pressure … Is that one? :)

Reply

I carry Amphipod water bottles on my long runs. I actually stick them in the side pocket of my shorts (I’m obsessed with Saucony bullet shorts) rather than hold it the whole run.
Swedish fish make me think of high school. The bookstore sold them at lunch and everyone ate them.

Reply

I love the Amphipod handheld! After a couple runs, you won’t even notice you’re carrying it.

Reply

Definitely carry a handheld during ultras. Most aid stations don’t have cups so you have to carry your own.

Last weekend’s 135 miles was HOT and HUMID. In Bristol, Tennessee so we had to deal with it any way possible. We struggled with chaffing big time due to the humidity. I also had to take salt caps b/c I have difficulty regulating my electrolytes.

I ate circus peanuts in the middle of a 100 mile race. I really loved the immediate sugar burst.

Tangent is that I had to go into the office today and I realized just how lazy I have gotten about not dressing up or putting on makeup ever.

Reply

I have found Nathan hand held water bottles to be fine. The new flip belt bottles are pretty good too. I’ve done some longer runs in the heat lately be have needed them. Nice work on the 16 miler, it sounded hot.

Reply

I’ve never even thought of a handheld water bottle before, that’s so smart. I like to run with my phone in my hand for no particular reason, so I feel like the transition to water bottle would be pretty natural.

and I love swedish fish. almost as much as I love oreos, so we’ll see about this. I actually have been a fan of most of the oreo combinations, so I can’t wait to try it out. I wish they made variety packs though so I could sample each of the different flavors instead of having to buy the whole carton because I have no will power when they’re around.

Reply

I love a handheld water bottle, too. I have a small one…maybe 6 ounces? I just refill it when I need to. Much easier to take small sips of water along the way than to chug a bunch at a water stop.

Reply

That water ski pic……Seriously you look like you are 16….in a great way!! The excitement on your face is contagious….and Andrew may be losing his shorts…??!?!?!! ha!

Reply

I use that exact water bottle. I love it because I can’t drop it and I forget it’s even there.
Swedish fish got me through many a marathon. My nieces job was to be at mile 16 with a bag for me:)

Hi Jenae – Curious if / how you fuel on your longer (> 13 mi.) runs. I am loytal to Gu gels, they have worked consistently me for me but I know they are not for everyone. Do you use these or other supplements to get you through? Would love to know more not only about your go-to brands but also how many you take on runs of certain distances. Thanks so much! – Bri

Ugh and so sorry for misspelling your name, Janae!

Reply

I love Swedish Fish and I love Oreos, but together?? I’m not so sure about that. I’m pretty much only sold on the original Oreos.

I use a Camelbak for super long runs but nothing during races because the cups seem to be enough.

The warmest race I’ve done had been in the 80s. However, I coach XC and we’re out there in 97 degree weather right now. Blech. It’s rough, but our competition is running in the same weather.

Reply

I always hated carrying a handheld until I had a Nathan handheld. I don’t even really have to hold onto it, it just hugs my hand. I usually fill it half full, freeze it, then fill the rest with water right before a run. As it heats up outside, the ice starts to melt and I have colder water for a longer period of time!

Reply

Nathan water bottles and hand carriers work well. Have you seen the super fancy reflective water bottle they make? It’s crazy how reflective it is.

I used to use gummy bears and snicker bars for fuel. Nowadays I have a fructose and sorbitol intolerance so many of the sport fuels (gels, drinks) don’t agree or work for me anymore. So long delicious vanilla GU that tasted like sugar cookie dough :(

Swedish fish oreos sound disgusting. Both are good on their own accord but mixed? blech.

Heat turns me into a melty withery winy pile of sleepy sweat. Short story is that I hate heat/bright sun when I run. It zaps me. During the IM Coer D’Alene *years* ago it as a zillion degrees (maybe 100F to be more precise) with a zillion % humidity. I swear it took me about a month for my body to recover from that heat fest. I have to wear a hat, sunglasses, and drink/douse myself. Getting my skin wet is super helpful so grabbing the wet sponges (and not overthinking sanitation), handfuls of ice, going through misters, etc is key for me.

Random tangent-at the physiotherapist this morning he took out a gadget that looked just like a glue stick and he made a long strip from my knee to my hip. I thought it must have been a nice medicated ointment that would sooth and give love to my leg. Wrong, it was basically to lube the line of torture he inflicted with his thumbs and popeye strong arms.

Reply

I love Swedish Fish and Oreos but maybe not together?? I really want to recommend Trader Joe’s Scandinavian Swimmers… Like Swedish Fish but way better in my opinion plus they’re from TJ’s and what’s not to love about that! Hot races… I ran Boston this April, I personally did not think it was too terrible especially at first, but by the middle and the end it was pretty brutal and I know it affected my race and many others!

Reply

I use a Nathan handheld. It’s 20 oz. and I need it all on anything over 6 miles in this Florida misery! :) It’s double insulated so keeps my water cool longer.

Reply

This is totally unsolicited advice but coming from a good place– Brooke has been through a lot of changes in the past few months and her playing as a baby might be a psychological sign that it’s a little too much for her. Just a thought! Certainly it could all be for fun, but I wanted to share that idea. Hope you have a great day!

Reply

I always carried a hand held bottle in long runs and races. I have the Nathan brand, I think I ordered them off Amazon, but they sell them many places. I like the zip compartment that it has attached so I could put a Gu or whatever else I needed in there. I found the smaller ones worked better for me because it wasn’t so heavy. During a half it would be enough to get me to maybe the last water station and I would need to grab a cup. In the full I would have to stop halfway and refill it, but it didn’t take much time at all. I think trying to drink out of the paper cups at each station slowed me down way more than one small refill stop :)

Reply

I remember that you were using gu as fuel during marathons and I am curious to know where you put the gels? I feel that I will never find a pair of running shorts with enough pockets (does that count as a tangent?!) ha

Reply

Sorry Brittnee… I have no idea why my comment randomly appeared here ;-)

Reply

Swedish fish Oreos!! Crazy. I love them both so I will have to try them! I also love your yellow and gray rug. Where did you find it?

Reply

I like Nathan’s QuickShot. It comes with a very comfortable hand holster … it stays on your hand without any gripping. The spout is great, no fumbling with a push-pull spout. The only drawback is that it’s only 10oz…..

Reply

I started running with a hand-held bottle last summer — easily the best decision I’ve ever made. It took a few weeks for my shoulder to get used to it (so beware of that!), but overall, it was a very easy transition and I barely notice it anymore.

Reply

I run with the amphipod insulated bottle – like your friend’s, but with an insulated cover. I don’t know that it really helps keep the drink colder, but it does keep my hand from getting sweaty holding the plastic. I love it, and I never stop for water stations during races because I can so easily carry it with me. After you’re run with it a few times, you won’t even notice that you have it in your hand.

Reply

I have a Camelbak handheld which is my savior during long runs in warm weather. I typically fill it mostly with ice, top it off with water and it melts down into cold water pretty quickly. I plan stops along the way to refill the bottle and it’s worked out well!

Reply

Obsessed with swedish fish, could eat them all day everyday…but don’t because well that can’t be good for you :) But I want to.

Reply

We don’t get nearly as many of the weird flavors of food here in Canada that you get in the US. The last time I was in the States I was surprised at how different the grocery store shelves were – you guys get a lot more variety than we do.

Reply

I am so frustrated with summer running right now, it is 90-95 degrees with an average humidity of 85% every day here in Western PA. I just feel so maxed out all the time and SLOW. I have read many articles about the effects heat has on your pace, etc. but it is just so hard to keep that in the back of your mind when you are in the middle of yet another struggle-fest run. Here’s hoping for fall-like temps SOON, my morale could use the boost! :)

Reply

All the yes to candy as fuel! If a long run happens to fall near a holiday I like to use festive candy as my fuel, like jelly beans around Easter and candy corn around Halloween. It’s just a fun little way to brighten up the run.

Reply

Handhelds are nice mine has an adjustable strap. You really don’t have to hold on to it tightly at all it just hangs on. My favorite candy fuel for runs are Starburst Jelly Beans!! I love Swedish fish and I have never tried any of the flavored Oreos but maybe I’ll take one for the team, try these and report back since almost everyone including the comments Ive read say No Way! Lol I’ll be on the look out for these. Have a great day!

Reply

I remember that you were using gu as fuel during marathons and I am curious to know where you put the gels? I feel that I will never find a pair of running shorts with enough pockets (does that count as a tangent?!) ha

Reply

I can’t say I’m super excited about that Oreo combo either. That rainstorm last night was amazing though!

Reply

I switch back and forth between the Nathan reflective bottle and the Amphipod small bottle. Both have nice handstraps. The Nathan one has a zipper pocket but I never use it.

I actually bought the Amphipod before my marathon last year and I removed the bottle and used the neoprene sleeve to stow my windbreaker. It was tight but it shoved in. I took the jacket off at 7 and handed off my stuff to friends at 15. It worked out well.

Reply

I’ve been using a handheld 10oz Fuel Belt water bottle for about 5 years now and it really made a huge difference in my training and race results! On hot days, I’m no longer tempted to take in tons of water when I pass by a water fountain; instead, I sip on the water slowly about every five minutes for constant hydration. At race aid stations, I just have a volunteer with the water jug top off my bottle.

I tried using a waist belt water bottle but reaching around behind me to grab the bottle was a contortionist’s act. It takes some getting used to hold the water in your hand but after awhile it feels like second nature. For me, it’s worth the extra gear weight on race day to ensure I don’t dehydrate!

Reply

I remember how I used to love running through the sprinkler when I was a kid! How fun! I don’t have a hand held water bottle but it’s something that I should look into!

Reply

I live in the Houston area so I definitely run in heat. Tuesday it hit 101 but with the heat index lately it has felt between 105-111!!! I do crossfit as well as run and it has been brutal. Its pretty bad when its 6:30 in the morning and they say it is 82 degrees outside but already feels in the high 90’s!! I would take your weather anytime!!!

Reply

i wrote an entire post yesterday comparing my favorite hydration tools (belt, vest, handheld) — perfect timing! :) http://minutespermile.com/2016/08/10/running-hydration-comparing-the-water-vest-vs-belt-vs-handheld-bottle/

Reply

I use a Nathan handheld for hydration. I got the small one first but later got the bigger one so I could bring my iPhone with me. Both of them hold Gu gels, keys, license etc. They both are adjustable and sit lightly on my hand. You hardly feel them when running. The water does not splash out even when you tip it upside down. I love using them and would not go back. Such a great invention.

Way too many new Oreo flavors on the market! Love the birthday cake … Not too sure how I feel about Swedish Fish though!

Just used sour patch kids to fuel my last long run … Love them!

Nice job on the 18-miler! Curious … How many 20-22 milers do you usually do before the marathon? Our running club does a pretty slow build up and so our 18 miler doesn’t happen until the end of the month. Would love to hear about your training plan in a future post!

Reply

I’ve never used a hand held water bottle before, but I probably should, at least through races. Most of the water/Gatorade ends up on my bib number. ;)

Tangent: SEVENTEEN days away from my due date!! Although, I’m hoping baby T comes a little earlier :) of course, that is after I have my hospital bag completely packed ;)

Reply

I have 2 handheld – one large and an 8oz. I feel like my arm fatigues with the heavy one so I usually don’t run long runs with it. Nathan is the large one and fuel belt made the smaller one)

I used to love Swedish Fish. I think the oreo combo sounds disgusting though, way too sweet. (although a chocolate raspberry truffle is pretty tasty)

Hot races = me spilling water on myself on purpose, especially wrists and back of the neck. One race had sprinklers set up, which I took advantage of. I wear my lightest clothes and a lightweight sunscreen, creams and lotions are way too heavy when it’s that hot.

I was able to run on the treadmill last night, I smiled pretty much the whole 5 miles.

Reply

I use a Nathan handheld and LOVE it! It has a little zip pouch too where I can put my keys or a chapstick or whatever and I really like that too. Also, I paid a little extra and got the insulated one which is great becaue it gets HOT down here in Atlanta! My running pals and I use to freeze bottles and plant them along the routes of our long run the night before but this is way easier :)

I’ve run more hot races than I’d like. It was hot the year I ran the Chicago Marathon and last year I ran the Savannah Rock and Roll half (there was a full too). They diverted runners in the full becuase of the tempature and 2 people actually ended up dying – it was terrible. One guy at the race and one later that day. I always make sure I have water and electrolytes with this heat and I slow down and just know those won’t be my PR days. I’m excited for fall running!

I’m not surprised about Brooke. My girls did things like that when we moved. I think it’s how they deal with changes. I just gave extra hugs and attention as it seemed to be what my girls were looking for :)

Tangent – I had gum surgery yesterday and learned there is actually a bandage for inside of the mouth – it looks like old school silly putty!

Another random tangent – I ordered the moto leggings you lined to before and I LOVE them. I got them awhile ago and they are great!

Reply

I can’t survive a hot run without a handheld. Plus, I use it to dump water on my head halfway through the run…that always helps me finish.

Love the video! Thanks for sharing!

Reply

I love both Oreos and Swedish Fish but ew not together….

I have a Nathan handheld(it’s pretty old) and I use it for long runs/marathons…that way you can skip some of the aid stations and also it is better to just be sipping at water/electrolyte drink anyway.Plus the holder part for it has a zipper pocket that you can stash lip balm/gu/car key or whatever…
It is always chilly here in the Bay Area in the morning so I rarely think about the heat…I did do a couple really hot half Ironmans though(95 degrees) and was fine.i was told to put ice in hat/sports bra/on wrists and I did every time I passed through the aid stations,Worked like a charm!!
Tangent-just got back from vacation and not ready to enter the real world yet!

Reply

I have a 12 oz Nathan water bottle. It’s light (relatively) and straps to your hand, so you don’t have to habe a grip on it the whole time. I usually refill during my longer runs. It works well.

Reply

I want a hand held water bottle too!

Reply

I thought that was a joke about the Swedish Fish Oreos! I don’t know ,that sounds really gross.
I’ve used a handheld forever, but I recently got a 2 bottle hydration belt from Fitletics. I typically only use one bottle with it, but it holds my phone great, and it’s the only belt that I’ve found that doesn’t slip up to around my waist (I wear it low on my hips). Holding a water bottle tends to throw off my stride and my arm gets tired of holding it, but I always take water with me regardless if it’s in my hands, or a belt!

Reply

HAND HELD WATER BOTTLE!! YES. EVERY. SINGLE.RUN.

sometimes when I want to do a faster run, I just use a recyclable water bottle, fill it only half way up and throw it away when I’m done with it. With the recyclable one, I just a couple of rubber bands to secure it around my hand/wrist. Super easy and not uncomfortable!

Nothing better than running through sprinklers in the morning after a tough workout!

Reply

I just got pouch water bottle that attaches with a magnet thing on your waistband. We really like it!

Reply

Me too! It’s Running Buddy right? I got mine from Amazon and would never carry a handheld again. I never feel that thing move. I wear Be Free shorts from Athleta that have side pockets that fit that thing perfect!

Reply

I am a huge fan of the red velvet oreos, and just picked up the chocochip ones and like those. Not so sure about swedish fish tho!

As for handhelds, I like the quickshot/speeddraw tops in the Nathan product lines.

Reply

I totally thought of you when I saw the online posts about the Swedish Fish Oreos, haha!

Reply

I cannot stand those hand water bottles. I need my hands for power! I have a small backpack I carry with a water bottle in it. It bounces a bit, but it doesn’t bother me.

Reply

Ehhhhh I do NOT know about those Swedish Fish Oreos… that just sounds kind of gross. I was lucky to be set up with a big running group in Chicago called CARA when I ran my marathon, so I had plenty of people to chat with (or just listen to their chatter!) but I haven’t run with anyone else in ages! I have done a hot half marathon before and I did NOT enjoy it… I dumped a lot of water on my head/neck which helps, but that’s about all I got…

Reply

I’ve used a handheld for years – I tried belts but I hate how they feel on me and the handheld just seems effortless to hold since it basically straps on. So for long runs its just me and my handheld. No phone, No music, no earbuds (I’ve yet to find pair that don’t bug the crap out of me!) With the recent attack on joggers I’ve since purchased an arm band so I can wear my phone :-/

Reply

I love the larger Nathan water bottle, plus the pouch fits my phone and it’s waterproof. I don’t run without one, plus it keeps my arm down low and relaxed.
Love love love the rug!!! Great job with 18 we all know how hard that is!

Reply

That handheld water bottle looks really cool!

Reply

I love the Nathan one as well. The newer model is more contoured to fit in your hand well. You can also keep your keys or gu in the pouch so it does not get to warm again your sweaty body (at least I have that problem for sure!)

Reply

I have tried a handheld a couple of times, but I’m not a fan because I feel like they throw off my running form by weighing down one side of my body. I have read that you should make sure to switch hands throughout the run so your right side, for example, isn’t always holding it.

Reply

I am going to buy me a hand held this week! I think I am going to go with Nathan………..there is a decent zip up pocket for gu and a key. I use swedish fish as fuel, but I don’t think those oreos would be good…………..is that for real or did someone just create that package to fool everyone?

I run a half marathon in hilly TN country every June, and you just have to take it easy and you can do it. It is brutal in Tennessee right now……….I am 30 seconds to a full minute slower per mile right now due to heat and humidity/dew point, no matter what time of day I run!

Tangent…………avocado is good. Why don’t they offer it at more places??

Reply

I’ve used Amphipod handhelds for years in all of my races and training runs, even in the winter. I ran one race early in my running career (half-marathon), where I felt like I didn’t get enough to drink during the race, so I decided to carry fluids with me all the time from then on. The bottles clean up nicely in the dishwasher, and are very durable.

Reply

Okay so Ross and I were talking about the Swedish fish Oreos last night (we have really intellectual and riveting conversations, no doubt) and he asked me if I would eat chocolate and raspberries together. Ummmm, of course! He said that is the same concept since Swedish fish taste like raspberries. It changed my mind about the combination. Not that I will be seeking them out now, but I am now curious enough to try them!

Reply

I used a handheld for a while, but it didn’t work for me. I am a major klutz so falling with something in my hand is not a good combo. I wear the Fitletic Hydration belt.

I raced a 25k in Hawaii last year that was a killer. Had to walk as I started getting light headed/nauseated – early signs of heat exhaustion. I think the key is staying ahead of hydration because once you get overhead/dehydrated it’s almost impossible to catch up while you’re still running.

Reply

I tried using a handheld bottle a few times, but it was really causing me wrist pain when I wasn’t running, maybe since something heavy was bouncing around on my arm? But I did get a Nathan hydration pack that I wear on my back. There is a little holder for the water spout thing, and it holds like 60 oz or so. I was worried it would bounce around, but it doesn’t and I love it for long hot summer runs.

Reply

I used to use skittles for my long run because they seemed to make my mouth less dry and they are delicious. I like Swedish fish and I LOVE Oreos, but I don’t think I would like the combination. I’m a double stuffed original person all the way!

Reply

I have a small Nathan handheld that I like to use for shorter runs. Anything over 10mi I like my Nathan velcro (they don’t make them anymore! No bounce!) speed 2 water pack. I just like to be hands-free on long runs. I don’t know how you go on an 18mi and rely on just fountains!
I love, love the grey yellow rug Brooke and Beretta are laying on. Where did you get that?

Reply

Running Buddy H2O!! (Amazon) Very secure magnetized holster for the waistband. It does not move or shift on me as long as my waistband is pulled snug. I HATE carrying water in my hand, it makes my upper body get too tired too fast. That thing is the best idea ever.

Reply

I am no good at running in the heat so I will be reading these comments as well. Oh and I am so not sure how I feel about those oreos haha. Such a weird combo!

Reply

I ALWAYS run with a handheld water bottle! But I live in south FL so you’ll basically die without one (because water fountains aren’t placed around…it would be hot water anyways). My favorite is the 10 ounce Camelbak one. The older style specifically (the pouch is too big on the new ones). This one:https://www.amazon.com/Camelbak-Products-Podium-Bottle-10-Ounce/dp/B00G46C6S8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1470955788&sr=8-4&keywords=camelbak+arc+quick+grip

I like the way it fits in my hand and the very top doesn’t rub on my hand like some other brands do.

Reply

Love all of the pictures! I really hope you are able to find and try the Swedish Fish Oreos soon!

Reply

I never used candy, but I used to use medjool dates on a run until I realized they were upsetting my stomach. I thought it was a brilliant idea because they’re completely natural but so sugary.

you HAVE to get those oreos! Let us know ;)

my first and only full marathon got unseasonably hot! It was so bad. It went up to 86 degrees, and we weren’t expecting it at all. It was a small race, and almost half of the people dropped out! About 10 were transferred to the hospital! very dramatic for my first race and maybe you can see why it was my only hahaha

Reply

I always eat the sour gummy bears as fuel for my long runs but I am also a chicken about it- I’m too scared to try these energy bars/chews/gels because I have very sensitive stomach.

Sounds like a fun long run with the girls!
I’ve been using the Nathan water bottle and it works but the little pouch won’t fit my phone.

Reply

Nathan handheld all the way! I’ve used many and hands down those are my favorite!

Reply

I have never tried candy during a run but my boyfriend crushed M&Ms during a marathon and swore they got him through. I don’t know how I feel about swedish fish oreos- I feel like they should not be together. Are there pumpkin oreos?

Reply

I definitely need water for runs of ~ 8 miles or more in the summer, esp when its humid. I’ve used Nathan bottles in the past, and they worked fine, but I realized that even when they’re empty they are still the same size and shape. I’ve started using Hydraflask 500s, and a very cool (if not a litle strange-looking) Salomon Hydro Handset, which can carry 18 oz water, a gel, and an iPhone. The Salomon wraps around your hand/forearm, which sounds weird but works, and means I don’t have to carry an armband for my phone.

Tangent: A post on Nate Silver’s fivethirtyeight.com says if we want to see faster marathon times we should make marathons a *winter* Olympic event. Amazing idea. Could we get both summer and winter?

I haven’t tried a hand held water bottle, but maybe I should!! I feel like I am always dehydrated while running.

I started carrying a Nathan handheld water bottle (an older, not as fancy version of this: https://www.rei.com/product/867026/nathan-speeddraw-plus-insulated-handheld-water-bottle-18-fl-oz) when we lived in the desert and I was pregnant during the summer. I heard a rumor staying hydrated was a good idea. I bought in. I’ve gotten used to it and carry it on every run now! I’ve switched the bottle that came with it for a Camelback insulated one, so my ice water stays cooler for longer. The pocket is great for keys and any nutrition I have with me.

I use haribo on my long runs, although during an all-day trail run I used Freddos (little chocolate frogs you can get in the UK) and they were like sweet food of the gods after like two hours in the rain!

Swedish fish Oreos: they smell like Swedish fish. They taste like eating an Oreo cookie and a Swedish fish in the same bite.
I’m glad I tried them but I have no desire to buy a second package.
