Thirteen miles is an excellent way to start off a Wednesday morning right? Yes, yes it is.
I’m glad I caught this picture of the horse attempting to eat my ear.
Also, I’m glad I caught this look of pure joy on Josse’s face when the horse first came over to say hello.
A photo shoot with a horse is a great excuse to take a break at mile 10 when your legs are dead.
I told Josse last week that I would be gone for the normal Saturday morning long run so she suggested we go on Wednesday instead. Talk about a true friend… she rearranged her training schedule this week so I wouldn’t be doing 13 miles (we finished with a 7:55 average pace) alone. It is always amazing to me how I feel like we don’t even cover all of the topics that we need to discuss over the course of 13 miles. We also had two more friends join us for a few miles along with this adorable dog. He sure kept the pace honest for us;)
This was a rough long run for me and I really don’t know if I would have finished it if Josse wasn’t there. Fighting to get back your endurance is no joke. I just keep reminding myself that it ALWAYS comes back after about 5-7 longish runs. Every time, it comes back but it definitely takes time to get those longer runs feeling better again.
We stuck to a running path for the majority of the miles and made a drink/bathroom stop at a grocery store at one point. Pretty fancy bathroom for a grocery store if you ask me.
After I finished my run Brooke and I went to see Dr. Bennett to get my IT Bands feeling 100% again. I asked her to put on her jacket and this was her translation of my request.
And just a few more random things to discuss:
-Pre-gymnastics excitement oozing out of every inch of her body.
-My child does not have ticklish feet?!? She asks me to tickle her feet because she thinks it feels good? She stays still the entire time.
-Such an awesome article about Steph Bruce. She has a 6 month old and 21 month old and just nailed the Olympic A standard in the 10k (32:14:42). I loved seeing the behind the scenes of her day and all that she does to get where she is today!
-Might be my most worn t-shirt in the history of me. It is a few years old and it just makes me happy when I wear it.
–Caisa sent this to me… a donut milkshake?!? I might have to partake.
-I finally remembered to buy frozen blueberries and Brooke was stoked to see them and then snack on as many as she could.
-Bagel kick going strong. Cinnamon raisin bagel, almond butter and apple sandwich.

Anyone have a dog that runs with them? About how far do they go with you?

Kris @Canadian Girl Runs
I snacked on roasted almonds, raisins, and club soda today… super cool, HA!
I usually run long on Saturday!
PEANUT BUTTER 100%. No questions.
Nicole (Cuckoolemon)
I have been following Steph Bruce too. She is SO freaking inspiring (and fast).
Sarah @ SarahRuns26
I was hardcore craving a milkshake today. Cravings like that you just don’t deny. Our lab runs with me for up to about 5 miles. He’s ten so I don’t want to take him too far! He still acts like a pup though so I’m not too worried.
Peanut butter. No question. I love almonds but I’m not a huge almond butter fan. Not sure why.
Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious
Hands down almond butter! There’s no question about it.
tam
Peanut butter for sure!
My afternoon snack was 3 Fuji apples.
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes
My puggle runs with me! 4 miles is his max right now. Running makes him so happy!
Peanut butter over almond butter! I usually run long on Fridays, but some weeks I move it to Thursday.
Trina
Haha…- a dog that runs with me? I have two basset hounds. I’d have to pull along a wagon if I wanted to take them on a run with me. Lol!
Deb
This made me laugh!!
Loribeth
Peanut butter all the way! And today was my long run-10 miles and it was hard-really windy and lots of pollen. Sure felt good to get it done though!
Margaret @ youngandrungry
Steph Bruce is the coolest and I love your grocery store bathroom pic! Haha so fancy and so funny. I’m so jealous you can long run during the week! I can only get them in on the weekends, but I’m just grateful I can do them in the first place.
Team almond butter! I love the flavor and texture.
Emma @myfullfatlife
My long run used to be Saturday but I think I want it to be Fridays instead.
Snack.. turkey jerky.
Tricia @ A Couple of Dashes
Those shorts are adorable! Where did you get them from?
The Hungry Runner Girl
Thank you Tricia!! I got them from Lululemon a few years ago! Hope you are having a beautiful day!
Jenny
Peanut butter for sure. This might be because I haven’t actually tried almond butter though (I know, crazy!) My feet aren’t that ticklish either, I love it when my feet get tickled.
Megan D
Don’t make me choose. I need both nut butters in my life.
I thought maybe Caisa was sending you that picture because they are hiring ;) F’real shakes are pretty dang good, so I think you need to try it. If not, I will try it for you. I know. I know. I am such a giving friend.
My friend sends me articles about Steph all the time and I just read an awesome one today about her. My friend knows I love running and Steph is her cousin. I just think she is amazing for all that she balances in life right now, how hard she trains and works and how she keeps it all real.
Lo
Hey Janae…just curious, how many breaks do you usually take during your runs? In previous training cycles I was trying to hit faster speeds when running but was taking more breaks. After realizing the clock doesn’t stop during a race :) I decided to just run and slow down if I need to/speed up when I feel good and try to not take breaks. It’s been 4 weeks of that and I just did a tempo run at my fastest pace ever. Just curious if you factor breaks into your overall pace or how you factor those in. Thanks!
The Hungry Runner Girl
HEY LO!! Great question! I do not count breaks into my overall pace. I usually only take breaks on easy runs or long runs to use the bathroom, get a drink (or take a picture with a horse). If I am doing a tempo or a speed workout, I do not take a break unless it is the recovery time or a stoplight and I’m forced to stop (in which I stop my watch but I rarely do tempo runs where there are stoplights). I hope this makes a little bit of sense. CONGRATS ON YOUR FASTED TEMPO RUN EVER!!!
Shalyn
My dog does about 20-30 km with us (12.5-18.75 miles) with us – she is a coonhound and can seemingly run for days.
Oh I have an apple with Wild Friends honey sunflower butter (seriously!! I ran to America to buy after your blog post, bought a bunch of the sampler kinds in the packets and now am a full-on addict) Thanks Janae!!
I switch between Sat/ Sun but will shift if I have a chance to run with a good friend or a good course.
Almond Butter – Wild Friends. You converted me.
Amanda @ Exploring Life & Things
Hahahah that picture of Brooke with her jacket on her head is hilarious! She is a such a little jokester :)
I usually do my long runs on Saturday or Sunday mornings. Last week I did it Sunday mid morning and it was 45 degrees when I started and close to 70 by the end. I did not dress properly at all haha.
Sara
I spent my entire 20s running with my husky in a local park – he ran with me through winter storms and loved it! I never took him out for more than 10 miles at a time (more would have felt like animal abuse because huskies will run until they drop — they have no sense of moderation or natural limits when it comes to running). I’m happy to report that same dog is now 15 and waaaaay too old for running but still in amazing shape for a dog his age!
Jacqueline
my 2.5 year old “lab/shepherd” (what we rescued, not what he turned into – 50lb weirdo with shepherd ears and legs for days) will do 4-7 miles with me, but I think he could probably do 10 miles easily. At some point I will need to get him a Fitbit to track his miles at the dog park/in the woods….
Taylor
My pups will run a couple miles with me here and there. Such a great article about Steph Bruce.. so inspiring. I had a think thin bar for a snack today! I would probably choose peanut butter but I love almond butter too!!
Kathy
peanut butter reigns supreme!
Snacks: starburst jelly beans and pb m&ms
I run with my dog, when she was younger (she turns 5 this week!) she could run 5 miles with me. Now I think she just gets bored and is done at mile 3. If we are in a race or in a new place with lots of people, she can run much longer. We take her on backpacking trips (She’s a lab mix but taller and skinnier) and she will run up a 100 yds and back the whole time we are hiking (the most we’ve taken her was 25 miles in a weekend). She LOVES walks and runs and gets so excited when I get her leash out! It’s hard to not be excited for my run when she looks up at me with the biggest doggy smile while running.
Julia @ Lord Still Loves Me
Even LOOKING at that picture of you tickling Brooke’s feet makes me squeamish! I’m envious of her ability to take it so easily!!
Bri
I have 2 golden retrievers that love running with me. The older one used to run 7-8 miles, and the younger one did 11 once (she wasn’t even tired). I bring water for them, and take a break when it looks like they need one.
Patrick McCarthy
Great running–I just had to mention this stuff –Its a bit pricey made in Hawaii and touristy–you can order on line or buy it in retailers in the Islands or at the Swap Meet you can get a discount
North Shore Goodies exotic peanut butters etc.
I highly recommend the White Chocolate Raspberry Peanut Butter!!
Aloha–Nice picture with the horses
Bethany Thompson
If I had to choose, it would be almond butter all the way! (Also, if somebody could buy me an endless supply, that’d be great.)
Kaci @ Kaci K. RD2Be
My dog loves to run with me. I usually only take her if I’m doing a 5k or less but she could definitely keep going. She spends the whole time looking back at me like “Mom, come on! You’re so slow!”
Question: do I have to pay for the almond butter? In that case, peanut butter for sure because I can’t afford all the almond butter I’d eat. If I didn’t have to pay, that makes it trickier.
My feet aren’t ticklish either (I say it’s from years of pointe dancing). I always challenge my husband to tickle them because it kind of feels like a foot rub ;)
Nina
Love your blog! The site isn’t working on my mobile phone anymore and I wish it would so I could read it on the go. The pictures are out of wack and makes it hard to read the text. Thought I’d let you know!
The Hungry Runner Girl
Nina!!! Thank you so so much and I’m sorry it hasn’t been working! I am currently transitioning my blog to a whole new design! It should be done by Saturday morning and hopefully all of the problems will be fixed! Enjoy the rest of your night!
Mary
Where do you get your shorts? They look longer than most. Hate how short many of them are.
The Hungry Runner Girl
Hey Mary!!!! Yes… These ones are from lululemon a few years ago! Love the longer too! Hope you have a fabulous rest of your week!!!
mary
Thanks for the info :) I didn’t think to look at lululemon. I did notice reebok has some 4″ One Series Woven Shorts. I’ll have to try those too and see which shorts fit better. Have a great rest of the week, too!
Jennifer
Mary, I found some awesome longer length athletic shorts at kohls and kohls.com (more colors) brand Tech Gear and are on sale now $17.99!!
Mary
Thank you, Jennifer. I love how those shorts have the wide waiste band, and you can’t beat the price!
chiara
my sad snacks today were triscuits. I have a stomach infection and I can’t have any sugar :( :( :(
Victoria @ Minus Thirty Three
My snack for today (and the last couple of days) has been rice cakes with almond butter and sliced banana! Just can’t get enough
And the answer for the rest of my life is: ALMOND BUTTER! 10,000% (though cashew butter is my all-time favourite)
Mary
What does your dr do to help your itband feel better? I wish I lived in Utah so he could help mine!! I did PT back in fall for it but didn’t really help all they much and they never could seem to work out the knots on my right side. Did that graston scraping too.
Teresa Eskew
My sweet dog Ginger runs with me.I love having her by my side. In her prime she could go about 11 miles. Now that she is 9 years, 2-3 miles is her max. I head out on my own then head back to picked her up for my cool down. She still gets so hurt when I leave without her and so excited when I come back for her.
I do not have ticklish feet at all. In fact they are numb after several surgeries on them. My girls try to tickle them without any luck.
Clareio
Peanut butter every time!
But have you tried a bacon sandwich using cinnamon raisin bagels? Best combination ever!
Sara
Sorry if you’ve already said this…but where are those shorts from in the bathroom pic?! They look like the perfect length. I struggle with finding good running shorts that aren’t TOO short or too baggy! Thank you :)
Mollie
I actually had to think about that for a minute. I love almond butter…BUT, could you really live without peanut butter?? PB for the win.
My coworker’s dog has run with us a few times and it is so sweet! She’s pretty fast too, and can last about 5 miles. It’s nice having her on trail runs to protect us from any creatures in the woods!
Erin Shmidt
Long run day is usually Sat. or Sunday, because I feel like school and activities during the week wear me out! But, when the littlest is in school, I would like to switch to the week. Love that Oiselle story. How motivating!
karli
I just started running with my siberian husky! we do 4 miles right now, cant wait to get him up to 10+ :)
Ultra Run Couple @UltraRunCouple
Your bagel looks awesome!
Our friends made us nutty/oaty/honey bars and they rocked our snack lives today. We will have a pic up later today on the blog.
Enjoy your Vegas time!
Rachael @ Catch Me if You Can
my border collie used to go on all my runs with me but the vet said he is getting early stages of arthritis so now he only goes on 5 miles or less. i love running with my dogs, being a woman its like a little extra security blanket when you run alone. plus oreo loves running, he makes sure to stay right infront of me a look out for trouble…border collie herder tendencies right there lol
Heidi
That is exactly how my border collie used to be when we would run. Out front, leading and protecting! Like she was totally ‘on the job and ready to work’! Miss my first running partner. She is now 13, blind and living the good life on our sofa :)
Susan
I can’t run w/ my lab since she has dysplasia but we do walk together. I always feel so much safer with her with me. She’s a sweetie but I have no doubt she would protect me if needed.
Stephanie
I have never had almond butter, but I bet I would love it. I LURVE peanut butter!
My dog Sally likes to run (drag) me on runs. I have discovered that more than 4 miles is too much for her. I took her out for a 6 mile and she drug me the first half and I drug her the second half. She is a little hesitant to run with me right now, as she got bit by another dog on our last run together :(.
What kind of Dr. is Dr. Bennett? Is is a chiro or an orthopedic guy or sports medicine or something all together different?
Heidi
I used to run with my border collie. But, she is now blind and 13 and living the ‘good life’ on the sofa :) I’ve only run a half and she ran every training mile with me for that half. I almost felt lost when I ran the race without her!!! I did have to watch the trail/asphalt conditions for her paws and keep her hydrated and cool (I run along a river, so I would let her swim).
My new pup is an Australian Shepherd. I have run her up to 11 miles and she didn’t even seem tired when we got home.
Ashley
I have an almost 4 year old boxer named Cash (the best dog ever ;) ) who runs with me occasionally. When we run in the city his max is 3-4 miles at my easy pace… and it depends on the season. He doesn’t like the cold or rain – so no winter running. And in the late spring/summer since he is a boxer and suffers from flat nosed dog problems (lol) he cant be out running much because he over heats easily. So fall/and early spring he is all about it! His favorite is when we do trails and he can run off leash with me.
:)
My usual long run day is Saturday, though sometimes if need be I will do it mid week.
And, Almond butter and peanut butter have my heart equally.
Emily
I also love having my feet tickled– it was a big deal once I ‘trained’ my husband to do it right. =)
I used to run with my sheltie in the park. Then, one day, when we got to the part of the path where my warmup walk usually turned into a jog, she sat her little butt down and refused. Clearly, she had decided that she was too old for this kind of silliness. The fact that she couldn’t speak *in words* never kept her from speaking her mind….
Angela @ Witty Aspirations
My Dachshund puppies love to run! And those suckers are fast.
Arthi
I’ve taken my dog out on a run but she is much more of a sprinter than a distance runner :) She’s lasted for about 6 miles but prefers running like crazy around the dog park.
Saturday is long run day … BUT … If it’s nice Friday and I don’t have a ton of early morning meetings, it’s sometimes nice to get it outta the way for the weekend.
Peanut butter no doubt!
Deb
Brinx runs with me – well, I run and he walks fast (He’s rather large with super long legs and he’s so.fast.) 3 miles is about his limit right now. He’s only 2 and our vet wouldn’t let me take him running until he was around 18 months (it’s bad for them before that – damages their joints) so he hasn’t had to much practice yet :) so we’re slowly working our way into more mileage. But he loves it!
Peanut Butter. Hands down.
Meghan @ getoffyourbuttandrun
I have two dogs that I run with. My one dog runs 3-6 miles and my second dog runs 2-3. I take one out at a time. The dog I take second is immediately jealous and can’t wait until I get home to take her! It’s definitely a lot more fun running with my dogs! They’re my favorite training partners!
Shirley
My son has a red healer that I plan on running with this summer. I usually do my long runs on Saturdays, sometimes a different day if Saturday is busy. Someone just posted these bagels on a Facebook page, they sound delish so I thought you might want to check them out: http://www.silverhillsbakery.ca/products/sprouted-bagels?
I love both peanut butter and almond butter, I would hate to have to choose!! Have a fun weekend!!
Stephanie
My puppy is almost 7 months old and I know she will be an awesome run companion… I’m waiting till she’s 9 months (per recommendations) old to start taking her out with me. She’s still growing by leaps and bounds right now (black cur/ boxer mix and ALL LEGS!).
I’d go with peanut butter. It’s a first-love kind of loyalty.
Long runs are either Fri, Sat or Sun, depends on the husband’s work schedule. This week, it’s Friday.
Snack is the Cranberry Pepita crisps from Nature Box. So.so.so.good.
Rebecca
Thought it was worth asking again if we’re ever going to address the cop in the room picture?
Jacqui
I just started running with my dog during this current marathon training cycle (for Boston). He’s less than a year and a half old and I typically take him on anything up to 6 miles, but I think he could totally run a half marathon (if I’m doing a long run, I like to not have to worry about him). He’s one of those breeds (a Vizsla) where people tell you that you HAVE to exercise them a lot, but they are perfect for runners. I think I run too slow for him haha.
elle
I run with a Vizsla too! She is a beautiful runner, can run forever and fast.
She just did a 10 mile race with my husband and they averaged a 6:42 pace, on a very hilly course!
Rachel @ Simply Rachel Nicole
I like long runs on Friday or Saturday if possible, it just fits my schedule the best. :) I actually don’t like almond butter or peanut butter, so I will have to say neither. :/ And I don’t have a dog to run with but would LOVE one! When are you getting your puppy?!
Susan
My sweet lab has dysplasia so no running but she gets a 1-2 mile walk after my run. Great workout for her–nice cool down for me. When the weather gets nicer we do swim together at our lake. She LOVES that (truth be told, so do I).
Brooke @ sweats & sweets
What is the update with your abdominal issues? I have been in a place with my health since the end of January with tons of tests and no result. How have you been dealing with fueling for your long runs? I find that I have the least amount of pain if I don’t eat before a run, but I cannot not eat before running for more than a hour. Just curious! :)
Tiffany
Super love that that bag of blueberries is bigger than Brooke’s head. Can’t have too many blueberries. It’s great that she loves fruit so much. My 4 year old daughter is the same, and I hope she never loses that.
I also can’t believe the mountains that you have there in Utah. GORGEOUS. I live in Ontario, Canada and where I am is flat, flat, flat. We do have great beaches though. Might be an even trade? :)
Caitlyn @ Candid Cerebrations
PB hands down! Because I work Monday-Friday my long runs are almost always Saturday or Sunday but I do alternate between the two. In college, Tuesday mornings were my long run days but then again those were the days that 7 miles were considered long. I’m about to go back to school this fall so I’m excited to hopefully have more flexibility to scheduling long runs during the week.
