Since we last talked and “I WAS SO MUCH MORE FIT LAST ______.”

Just a few of the highlights from our neck of the woods since we last caught up:

-5 sunshine filled miles (ummm the last time that happened was the time I ran in Tucson a few months ago).  Utah has crazy inversion issues in the winter and yesterday the air quality was great so it was just the run I needed after many days on the treadmill.

IMG 6138

-My mom gave me a crate (we will be crate training) on my birthday for our future dog but I am pretty sure it has already gotten hours of use from Brooke playing doggy.

IMG 0947

-My sis needed some help yesterday which I kind of love because that means I get her girls for awhile.

IMG 6149

-The face of a child that hasn’t been to a park in months.  51 degree weather… I reminded Brooke to not get too excited though because Utah loves to tease us with beautiful weather before freezing over again for another month or two.

IMG 6155

-Living the February dream.

IMG 6171

-My monkey bars attempt—>  photo taken seconds before I swung my knee right into the bar and thought I broke my kneecap.  Coordination has never been my strength.

IMG 6162

-Next stop was to pick up a chicken pot pie for their dinner (they are obsessed with that pie) and of course we took advantage of the samples.

IMG 0974

-And we split some churros afterwards… almost as good as a donut:)

IMG 0979

-A new Costco find for an easy/lazy meal.  SO SO delicious and I put it on top of a bunch of greens and it hit the spot.  30g of protein and 7g of fiber… and I think it ends up being like $2 a bowl.  It is one of my new staples.

IMG 0985

-And then we ended things on the couch with grapes from Mer (my grandma that always hooks our family up with delicious fruit).

IMG 0992

-I hit up Megan’s bootcamp class in the new gear she gave me for my birthday.  She finds the best workout gear and I’m OBSESSED with the leggings she got for me from Forever 21.  This is my first time trying out their active line and their leggings fit perfect, they are adorable, comfy and about 1/3rd the price of other workout pants.  I’m sold.

IMG 0967

-A better look at the bottoms.  Next ones that I will be purchasing from Forever 21—> these, these and these (love the pockets).

IMG 6151

-HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY DAD!!! The happiest, sweetest, most supportive man out there.  A pic from one of the many times he drives me (and my friends in this one) for our long run at 5 in the morning.

IMG 7912

-I came across a race picture the other day from last February at this time.  I was training for Boston and in pretty good shape (for me) at the time.  I ran a strong half on a hard hilly course and finished 3rd overall.  Currently I am NOWHERE NEAR the shape I was in last year… but guess what that’s totally okay with me.  My goal right now is to run a strong half in May which is going to take a whole lot of work but I get excited about that.  I don’t want to compare to the fitness I used to have… I just want to be ready to do the work to get there again (and faster too;).  It is SO easy to get discouraged (believe me, I think I have close to 4 billion times) when we lose fitness or start over again after an injury/baby/sickness/time away from running but feeling discouraged won’t help us to get out and do the runs it takes to gain fitness back.  Get excited to build up again because if we aren’t enjoying the training and the process of getting to our goal races then why are we doing it?

I’m excited for the next few months of running and getting to a starting line again:)

Other Utah peeps reading that are rejoicing over this clear/sunny air?  Do you run outside when the inversion is really bad?

Who has a great Costco find that they are hooked on?

Where do you get most of your workout gear?  Ever tried Forever 21 activewear?

When is your next race?

We are having weirdly warm weather this week. 60s today and its supposed to be 84 (!!!) tomorrow. I’m excited for it but I hope it doesn’t mean its going to feel like summer in April.

Next race is at the end of March. Training hasn’t been going super great, so I don’t know that I’m all that excited about it right now. I’m sure I’ll get there as it gets closer!

I am in love with pot pie too, so I’m with your nieces on that one! Yum!

I haven’t shopped in forever 21 in so long and had no idea they had activewear so I’ll have to check it out :) Next race will be Boston, I’m similarly fit to what I was 2 years ago the last time I ran it but not fit the way I was a year ago. After Boston I’ll need a good break!

I’ve always gotten my workout gear from Target, Lululemon or Fabletics, but those Forever 21 leggings are awesome! I didn’t even know they had workout clothes. Thanks for the info!

Happy birthday to your dad!

I buy most of my workout gear at Target. Such great stuff for really cheap! When I’m feeling splurgy or want to treat myself I’ll get something from Lululemon. Right now I’m training for a marathon, so I keep telling myself when I complete my first 20 mile run (which is a huge deal to me) then I can get something new :)

Reply

I like this idea of having an incentive like new gear to hit new goals! I just started training for my first marathon too so I might have to borrow this….

Wow! You got 51 degree weather yesterday and we got 51cm of snow! Ouch! It’s a record for a day… you know, the kind of records that you are not thrilled to break ;-) Like you, I want to race a strong half-marathon in May! I’m on week 2 of a 16 weeks training program and so far so good! Wishing you the best with your new running goal!

Reply

We’re supposed to get 50 degree weather here in NJ this weekend too! I can’t wait to get outside for a long run! I’m only planning to run one race this year – the Philadelphia Marathon in November. It’ll be my first full marathon. I am no where near the fitness level I need to be for the race, but am looking forward to training hard to get there.

Happy Birthday to your dad!

Happy birthday to your dad!

Thanks for sharing about the half you ran last year compared to where you are at this year, those were the words I really needed to read today. I’ve had a super disappointing season where I’ve run four half marathons and haven’t even come close to PRing … not even close. Coming back from injury I pretty much knew I wouldn’t PR this year but it’s still a tough pill to swallow now that it’s actually happened.

It’s easy to think about strong runners like you just busting out amazing finishing times all the time, but today’s post was a good reminder that we all go through recovery periods where PRs don’t happen. Thanks!

next race is the Island to Island half marathon 4/30 in Ocean city, md. I’m stoked to try a fast half marathon again. And i will be browsing forever 21 next time i’m at the mall.. cute pants!

Happy birthday to your dad! I buy a lot of my workout gear from Saucony and Brooks when they have sale or from Gapfit. I really think there’s a difference in quality and fit so I’d rather have just a few good pieces.

Reply

My costco find has been Kodiak Cakes pancake mix. They’re protein pancakes that are so delicious and all you have to do is add water. I’m obsessed.

I always get my workout gear from TJ Maxx or Marshalls. You can legitimately get nice quality sports bras, shirts, and pants for $5. i don’t think it gets better than that.

Reply

I’m obsessed with Kodiac Cakes, too!

Reply

I’m sure Brooke is so so so so excited you guys are getting a dog!!

Reply

My next race is in May too! And I’m currently not able to run at all due to shin splints/possible fracture :( So cycling, pool running, strength training, and swimming it is! I can’t wait to hit the roads!

I took some time off this fall/winter after running my first marathon. It is definitely frustrating to feel like so much fitness has been lost, but I know that I needed a bit of a break to avoid mental burnout. Right now I am just glad that each week seems to go a little better than the last. Plus I don’t have any races until April so I still have plenty of time to train.

That picture of Brooke in the crate reminded me of this scene from Scrubs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sWMm0UE1AU

I love those tights from Forever 21! I never think to look at their active line but this just reminded me that I have a gift card :) My next race is (hopefully) March 12! It’s a St. Patrick’s Day themed 8K. I agree so much that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to our previous running times.. I know I’m guilty of that all the time.

Reply

I’m all about the inexpensive Target gear. But every now and again I’ll treat myself to something nicer like Nike or The North Face.

I’m eyeing the Utah Valley Marathon….. any tips (for training or racing it)?

Reply

Happy birthday to your dad! Anybody that will follow along on 5 am runs has a special place in heaven. My dad used to come to my races when I did track in middle school. Always last place, and he never missed one :)

I get most of my workout gear from Old Navy or Target. The occasional piece from Fleet Feet (Brooks or Nike). Love the C9 stuff – so cute, and almost always on sale!

Tobacco Road Half in a month! Shooting for sub-two!

Reply

I have pro compression leggings that have similar cuff detail with the stripes. They were cheap because I got them with a 50 percent off code a while back.
I haven’t bought much running gear lately. Haven’t been running much either. My fitness is nowhere near where it was at this time in 2014. I ran a 2:05 half in March of 2014. I am running that same race this year with hopes to finish 2:30. But I am totally ok with it too. Life has become full of other priorities and this is temporary. Everything is temporary :) enjoy your sunshine!!

Reply

Oh wow! I had no idea Forever 21 had activewear. I don’t find much there, but I’ll have to check it out.

My next race is this weekend. So excited! It’s funny, after two fulls, this will be my first official half. ;)

Reply

Love the leggings! I bought a pair of athletic leggings from Forever 21 years ago but I think I bought a size too small. Will have to try them out again!

Running a 5k or 10k this weekend as part of my “run a race every month in 2016” goal. I figured I have to run to the start and back home (5 miles each way) so perfect opp to get in a long run. It’s gonna be like 50 degrees out!

Reply

Happy Birthday to your dad!
I love those workout clothes! I usually get mine from Old Navy but I will have to check out Forever 21.
I have my first half marathon on February 27th!!!!

Reply

Super cute leggings! I have tried some of their workout gear before and have liked it and of course you can’t beat the price! I tend to buy a lot of stuff from Oiselle (I shop the sales), love their stuff!
We are getting into the 40s coming up and that’s a warm up for us!

Reply

I’ve never even heard of an inversion before. Poor air quality scares me. I certainly wouldn’t run in it. We had some bad air quality this summer from forest fires and it was horrible.

Reply

I’m glad I’m not the only one, I was like, “Inversion? Isn’t that a yoga thing? What the heck is that?” So I googled it and yikes! I guess I should stop complaining about all of Iowa’s super windy days!

Reply

Lately I feel like I have been a walking advertisement for Costco. Ever since seeing the protein flapjack mix on your blog I have been hooked! I also love their giant bag of sweet potatoes and their huge tub of hummus.

Reply

The inversion has be so nasty!! I’m so glad we can see the sky and the mountains again. And it’s war enough I can let the girls play out side for a while. I still can’t run outside very well because the cold (anything below 55 for me) still stirs up my asthma. But it gives me so much hope and something to finally look forward to when it starts to warm up again. I’m praying it sticks around.

Goin to Costco today so I’ll be keeping an eye out for that salad mix!

Reply

Are you serious? Those mountains are where you live?! That view is incredible!!!!! I need to move to Utah stat!
Love those leggings! I used to be Lululemon obsessed, but I’m kind of over it. I love athleta because they have great sales. And gap fitness. Just bought the comfiest long sleeve shirt with a hood the other day…
My next race is a 5k…I haven’t done a 5k in 5 years! A huge step down from my last real race, a 50 miler! But I’m trying to get my speed back. Slowly.

Reply

That Costco chicken pot pie is actually really good! We get them from time to time!

Reply

Good morning, Janae!
Next race is March 6th. Half marathon. I CRUSHED a workout yesterday… 4 repeat miles with only 2:00 recovery. I am 50, so I can’t remember the last time my splits were that fast. :) Discovered that spinning twice a week and running 5 days is keeping me from getting injured and making my leg speed faster. I love the Costco Kodiac pancakes as well.

Reply

It sounds like where I live in Oregon is very similar to where you live in Utah. We had a few weeks of snow back in December, but now it’s been sunny and warm. I’ve been able to get out on my bike a few times this past week. I love it. I’m sure we will get hit with snow again before the “end” of winter. I like to call this a spring tease. :)

Most of my activewear is from lululemon, Athleta, and SOAS. I’m pretty much obsessed with all of the running gear from SOAS.

Reply

Most of my activewear is from Athleta, using reward points from my Old Navy credit card! I’ve never tried anything from Forever 21. At 47 years old, that might be pushing it. haha!
Love the view of the mountains where you live. I’m heading out west to go skiing in the mountains in a few weeks. I can’t wait!!

Reply

I do not know when my next race is because of this injury, but there will be one……it just might be a year from now. I am in the not nearly as good of shape as last year spot, but it is giving me a desire to run that is deeper than it ever has been.

Reply

I truly needed to read that part at the end! I’ve been absolutely beating myself up for the shape I’m in now compared to this time last year. Then I was working with a coach and seriously in the best shape of my life and now I’m up 5 or 10 pounds and running just feels labored! I caught myself not wanting to go to my Thursday night group track workout that I always go to because the usual group that I run with has been kicking my butt, but not going wouldn’t solve anything! We just go through phases, I know things will turn up eventually!

Reply

While you are discussing workout gear – I have a VERY strange question! Have you (or anyone else) run into the issue of your workout gear (doesn’t matter quality or brand) smelling awful regardless of how many times it’s been washed? It smells fine when it comes out of the washer/dryer – but once I wear and start to sweat again, they smell awful!

Reply

Every few washes I put a little plain ammonia (not lemon or sudsy) in the “fabric softener” compartment of the washer. Really helps get the stink out.

Reply

Do you use detergent made for workout gear? There are several brands available. I use Nathan Sports Wash because it’s readily available. Keep the stink away.

Reply

Next race is this Sunday! I can’t wait to run this 10k to see how much (and if…) I ‘ve improved since my last 10k in the beginning of January!
I know how you feel… after our move from NY to London i didnt have the time or place to work out/run at all and when i started again in October I was soooo not where I used to be! I could barely do 2 miles without feeling hald dead. Now I m nailing my 10milers but i am still nowhere near where I want to be in order to run a marathon…. Yet!

Reply

It’s funny because I was looking at old race photos and realizing I am so much more fit than last February. After spending 2 year with multiple injuries, etc I’m glad to have made progress. Everything evens out though and we must take the good with the bad.

You’ll get to be where you want again Janae!

My next race is a 10k in less than a month!

Wow Utah looks gorgeous!

Reply

Currently training for a 5K, but not sure when that will be, I want to run sub 25. But my real race is the Pittsburgh Half Marathon come May.

I would say most of my shirts come from races I run & most of my bottoms come from TJ Maxx or Dicks. But I could really use a workout wardrobe refresh.

Happy Birthday to your dad!!

It’s been two years since I trained for a marathon, and almost a year since I ran a half. I’m not even sure I’m in 10k shape anymore! Sometimes I get discouraged looking back at my pictures of workouts during that time, but then I remind myself that even if I can only run 3-4 miles pain free it’s better than not running at all!

I get the majority of my workout clothes from Under Armour. I love the fit of their leggings and capris. I love Lululemon too, and even though I try to limit myself due to all the $$ I tend to buy more there than I should because it’s just addicting! :)

Happy Birthday to your dad!
I love, love the work out gear at Forever 21!!! It holds up remarkably well, always fits great, and super comfy!! I can also find good stuff at Target too!
I ran my 2nd marathon on Sunday (new PR!), so no race on the schedule yet. But I feel great and strong, so I’m itching to run something soon!
Now I need to hit up Costco for those bowls! Thanks for the tip!

Next race is in 2 weeks, the Phoenix marathon! I’ve been training since November so am sooo excited to run this race! Beautiful pics, enjoy the weather!

I’m a little leery of workout gear from Forever 21 but it is seriously cute. I may have to try it.

It’s nearly 70* in Denver today…I think I beat everyone. Gotta love Colorado.

Reply

And now I *have* to shop at Forever 21. Those pants are just too cute and their prices there are always more than reasonable. I haven’t been there in forever. Their dressing rooms make me crazy. Who is really only going to find 6 things in that store? It’s huge! Score for online shopping!

Reply

I tend to get workout clothes from Target, Kohl’s or Road Runner Sports, except my compression pants. I get those on Amazon since that’s the only spot I can find them at a reasonable price.

I’ve been sick for the past several days and finally got a run in yesterday. It wasn’t fast but it wasn’t awful either.

I entered the lottery for the NYC marathon. I don’t really expect to get in but we shall see. I have half-marathons in March, April and May.

Reply

Costco: Avocados and tortilla chips (like the mega Kirklan/Mission strips bag.) SO GOOD.

Workout clothes: Forever 21 might be cheaper, but I’m going to be super curious how many wears you get out of the gear. Keep us informed! My favorite places are a local running store and Lululemon when I feel a slurge. :D

Race: BOSTON! Less than nine weeks until race day, and my legs are feeling the work. Loving the training – but not loving the weather for training. Last Saturday’s long run (18 miler) was in -8 deg weather. Thanks Minnesota.

Brooke is TOO stinkin cute <3 My next race may be a Half in April but trying to be my body to cooperate for that… we'll see!

I had my baby two months ago and now I’m seriously starting from scratch again with running :( I found out I was preggo right before Big Sur and running just felt crappy during pregnancy, which I figured was good timing.. I was feeling burnt out from running 2 marathons in the last year anyways. I didn’t think it’d be so difficult to come back, but wow, it really is! The extra baby weight on me doesn’t help :) But I’m just grateful to get back out there and slowly start to build back up again. Been doing walk/run 3 mile runs lately and its getting easier each time!

Most of my gear is Athleta, fits great and holds up well.

What brand are those black sneakers?

Hey Sam! They are Nike!

I can’t believe you’re already running! That’s awesome that your recovery went so quickly :)

My FAVORITE item at Costco are those ginormous muffins. You ned to have one if you haven’t!

I have been battling a string of random injuries (after 13 years previously injury free) since October. To say I am discouraged is the least of it. Something with my foot is happening right now. I am just praying it will be healed up soon. My favorite running season is coming up quick and all of the races I love as well. I can’t wait to get back out there strong and healthy…

Also, Costco has my heart. I love the chicken pot pie, the Kodiak power cakes, and turkey burgers.

Reply

I’ve gotten quite a lot of my tights at Marshall’s. Funky designs, great prices. Win-win.
I love the picture of you running in shorts and playing in snow. You know in the non-running world, that might be considered crazy, right? But we understand. Enjoy!

Hi Janae! I LOVE pot pie (it may be in my top 5 favorite foods), and I am always tempted to buy the one at Costco. Since your nieces love it, I think I’ll pick it up the next time I’m there!

Happy Birthday to your amazing Dad!

And fitness definitely comes and goes in cycles (tax season I’m looking at you) but the great thing about running is no matter how hard those first few runs back are after a break, they start to get easier and you start to feel stronger pretty quickly. And the addiction continues…

Reply

I live up I’m the mountains out of the inversion. I took my daughter to a tumbling competition on Saturday in Farmington, and the inversion gave me a lot of anxiety! I felt like I was suffocating. My sinuses even started to hurt. So feeling very grateful for my beautiful mountain valley.

No races right now. Just on auto pilot.

My next race is this weekend! I am trying my first go at a speedy race for the year in a winter 8 KM.

It’s taken me a long time to come to peace with the fact that it’s ok to not be in “PR shape” all the time. Our fitness waxes and wanes, as it should. Life is always more important than running (even to elites, I’m sure), and we need to remember that. There will even come a point in our lives when PRs are unachievable, simply due to age. It happens to everyone.
I have no doubt you’ll get back to that halfer shape you were in last year — I hope I don’t come across as harsh, but you really never take time off, do you? Cross training does not equate “time off” in my opinion. I mean, in the years I’ve been reading your blog, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you — injured, pregnant, or otherwise — take a good chunk of time off exercise of any kind. Your body snaps back quickly and I promise that barring catastrophe, you’ll never have to “start over.” I’m glad you don’t beat yourself up about it, and hope you can train through healthy. I’m pulling for you!

That burrito bowl looks awesome! I make that same thing in the crockpot and it is super easy. Throw in some chicken breasts, can of salsa, can of beans, can of corn and some taco seasoning and you’ve got enough to make burrito bowls for the whole family! (Of course, add cheese when you serve it up.)

I love that cute race pic from Dogtown! I just ran it on Saturday and I forgot how much I love that course. Running up and down the washes is such a fun part of the race. I can’t live without Naked Popcorn from Costco and it’s totally fine that I eat a bag the size of my toddler every week, right? We have had the best weather in St. George, today it’s going to be 75 and sunny…hello tank tops! You’ve inspired me to do a little lunchtime shopping at Forever 21, or as I lovingly think of it Forever 36.

I live in a bowl so the inversion the air quality horrible here in the winter. It’s ugly for training but I do what I got to do. 72 yesterday but winds and rain today with snow tonight. My weather is very similar to yours.

Lately Old Navy has been my go to for work out clothes with a sprinkle of C9 an Lulu. But it looks like I need to check out Forever 21!

I’m signed up for the Big Sur Marathon in April. My training has been going much better than expected. I’ve learned to train on my own again which has allowed me to work on speed. We have a bib for the Napa Valley marathon and it was just decided last week that I would be doing it instead of my husband. I’m def not ready for that race but am scheduled for a 20miler that day anyways so what’s another 6mi?! ha!

Yay for sunshine! We are soaking it up in Wyoming too!!
Who knew Forever 21 had workout gear!?? Those are so cute! I have mostly Athleta and Brooks, but I live close to a Sierra Trading Post which always has a mix of fun gear. I’ve actually been bribing myself as motivation to get ready for my next race with self-promises of a shopping spree at Sierra if I keep at it and meet the goals I’ve set. I have a 10k coming up in March.
Happy Birthday to your dad!!

Love pot pie!…and it’s a favorite of my picky kids too. I like to make it when I know I’ll have a busy week and it’s easy to make 3-4 (especially w/ store bought crusts), bake half way and then freeze for a quick, healthy meal. My next planned race is the Chicago Lakefront 10-miler and I’m training for the Illinois marathon (my 2nd) in April, but I may work in a few 5ks in between.

Just want to comment about the gift from your mom. That’s a dog carrier, not a crate that will become your dog’s den or safe place. A crate for crate-training should have enough room for your dog to move around and definitely be able to see out of. Please consider something larger just made of metal, with no plastic panels.

I love nike workout gear especially their shorts. And there is an AMAZING Australian sports brand for women, Lorna Jane. She makes the best sports bras, leggings and well everything…it’s a bit expensive but the quality is second to none. It lasts forever. She recently just opened a whole bunch on stores in the US actually!

My next race is a half marathon in May, leading up to my first marathon in July. Eek! I have felt fitter – especially early last year because I was doing lots of cross training. But I do feel like my energy levels were lower when I was training so hard and I couldn’t be as consistent. I tended to burn out.

My next race is Boston! And it’s really coming up quickly!
