-My mom brought lunch over for us (chicken fajita salad) and watched with us!

A few things about the trials:

-JARED WARD!!!!!!! He took third for the men.. he lives right by me and he ran for BYU.  I am SO stoked about him!

-Rupp took 1st for the men and that was his first marathon ever!

-I LOVED watching Amy and Shalane talking to each other and working together.  Amy really seemed to be helping Shalane out at the end with her water bottles and encouraging her.

-Meb.  I just love him.  When all of his kiddos ran up to him at the end.. goosebumps everywhere.

-Kara broke my heart but I am stoked that my two buddies took 1st and 2nd;)

And now a bunch of pictures from my girls’ night with my favorites.  They took me to Carabas and then to stay the night at The Grand America… they are real good to me.

Also, Brooke dropped my phone in water yesterday so I don’t have a phone in case anybody tried to reach me.  At this point I am not sure I am going to buy a new one ha… I can’t keep one working for longer than a few months.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!! Will you be mine?

What are your plans today?

What did you think about the Marathon Trials?

Happy, happy birthday, Janae! Welcome to your 30s! They are wonderful.

It sounds like it was a perfect birthday for you. At first I thought Brooke was holding a giant container filled with pasta but it’s a yellow foam rollar.

I watched the trials for start to finish and it’s clear my opinions by twitter. ;). I was happy for Amy and Shalane. I thought it was awesome how they worked together but one of the golden rules of running is if you are or your training partner is having a better day…you go. Amy could have easily put herself into a position of not making the team but staying back and I can’t even imagine those emotions.

Desi is a favorite of mine and I loved that we got to see more personality from her this race.

I think this could be year 5 of us being Valentines so I’ll continue taking the title. ;)
Bloggentines? Can that be a thing or is that too cheesy…but then again isn’t Valentines Day maximum cheese factor anyways?

Lol that cracked me up about Brooke holding pasta hehehe!!

Looks like you had a great day! (Except for the phone part of course ha) Heartbroken for Goucher, but very happy for the qualifiers. It was an exciting trial. Plans for tonight? Date night with the hubby! That’s luxury for us, so we’ll enjoy it!

The Chicken Bryan meal with basil and goat cheese sauce on the chicken is my favorite at Carrabbas. I like it so much that I found a copycat recipe online. I’m glad your birthday was so special!

You need to buy some phone insurance with the next one. It will save you in the long run but there are days I wish I could just toss my phone in the trash too! Looks like you had a fun weekend. You’re very blessed to have so many good friends!

I felt so bad for Kara but Amy, Desi and Shalane were amazing. I’m so excited that Meb is going again, he is a beast!!

Not feeling great today so I’m planning to stay in and hang out on my couch today! Glad you had a great birthday!

Happy happy birthday!!! I hope you have a great day!!!! And the trials were incredible.
I was hoping dathan would place for the men, but once he dropped out I didn’t know any of the others except meb of course, who will always have my heart after boston 2014! He’s also such a humble and incredible person, it’s impossible not to be crazy about him.

Amy and Shalane were amazing to watch. I’m so happy that they achieved their dream of being on the team together! I was super psyched about Des and she sure made for a dramatic finish but man, my heart broke for Kara. I got teary eyed as I watched her get choked up at the finish. I’m selfishly hoping she’ll come to Boston now though which seems unlikely. Anyway, it was so inspiring watching all of those amazing athletes yesterday! Now just rooting for the friends I know racing the la marathon today. It’s gonna be an even warmer one than yesterday!

I enjoyed getting to watch the trials on TV, especially since I was feeling a little under the weather yesterday. It gave me something to just lounge around for. I am proud of Rupp for running and winning his first marathon ever. That is amazing. However, what I don’t understand is how the majority of those runner, especially the non-contenders (who should be extremely proud of themselves for running with world-class elite runners!) had to run qualifying races and he did not? Just an interesting point.

Happy Birthday! 30s aren’t so bad!

Hi Katie,

I was curious about this, too so I looked it up. Apparently, you can also qualify based on a Half Marathon time. He ran a 1:01 Half in December.

Qualifying Standards

Event “A” “B”
Men Marathon 2:15:00 2:19:00
Half Marathon 1:05:00

That makes sense! I should’ve looked it up! Their times amaze me; they finish full marathons faster than I run a half! (But I’m sort of slow!)

Reply

Ha, me too Katie. I hear you.

I didn’t get to watch the trials. But I was also pretty excited to hear about Jared Ward.
I can’t seem to have everyone in our family healthy at once lately. So today we will be staying home and getting better instead of doing the Valentine thing. Valentine’s always seems to have something weird about it for us. So maybe we will do Valentine’s next weekend.

Looks like a great birthday! Welcome to the big 3-0! Enjoy your Valentines day :)

Happy Birthday!! Looks like you had a great celebration!!

Plans for today … Running on the treadmill (because it’s 0 degrees outside) and taking my little pup to the pet store to buy her a Valentine’s present :) Had an ugly, ugly breakup a couple days ago (glad to be done with that situation) … So will be enjoying a relaxing night at home!

I was sooooo sad that Kara didn’t make it. And that Deena had to DNS.
And soooo mad about the number of people (53?!) that Alberto tried to have disqualified because they “cut-off” Rupp.
But I was really glad to see Amy make it after *her* heartbreaking close fourth last year.
And psyched that Shalane hung in there and made the team regardless of pace.
And totally stoked that Meb made another team!!!! Though it was erroneously reported by USTAF that he will be the oldest Olympic marathoner ever (not even close).
Love the way you celebrated your birthday!
And glad that your birthday is not tomorrow (only once every for years)!

Happy Dirty 30th Janae!! Yes we watched the trials and i was so proud of everyone who made the team, but especially kara, she fought and didn’t give that race up at all! I thought it was crazy that the exact same top 4 from the last trials did it again!

Happy birthday!! ??

loved the trials! I don’t think there is anything more inspiring in the world than the olympics and the olympic trials of any sport. It’s athletes laying it all on the line in the most true form and I love it. I was sitting there shoving popcorn in my mouth at the end of both races because I was just so excited and in awe of how hard they were working. But I did not envy them because it looked SO HOT.

loved your birthday shenanigans almost as much as the trials! that looks like an awesome time with some awesome friends.

I loved watching the trials!! We’ve had really cold temps here in Chicago and I’ve been sick so it was a bad week for my training…watching gave me more motivation though to start next week off strong again :)

I love Carrabas!! Happy birthday!!

Happy Birthday Janae!! 30’s are way way better than 20’s. It has been so fun seeing all of your celebrations. You are a blessed gal!!

I ran my first 10k race yesterday (I have done 5k’s and half marathons but never a 10k) and enjoyed it. It benefited the shelter in the area. The last person to come in was a man who weighted probably 400+. But, as he got close to the finish line, the cheering of everyone erupted until he crossed it.

After the 10k, my husband and I watched the LA Olympic Marathon Trials. It was pretty amazing but I don’t envy them in that heat. :( One thing for all of us to learn is that partnering up while training has such strengths. My husband kept saying that the two of them look like they are out on a training run. Good for them! I was so sad that Kara Goucher did not make the team. :( She is amazing and she has such strength. Plus that, she is a Minnesota girl! But, I was very happy for the 6 that made the USA team. Enjoy the rest of your Birthday weekend and Happy Valentines Day.

The 10k benefited the area animal shelter. There were lots of dogs there including my daughters puppy.

What happened to Rupp’s shirt? It disintegrated before our eyes!

A relaxing day at home with my 28-years Valentine. Kind of confined over here. And it’s cooooold!

Reply

I saw all the holes in it too! What happened?

Reply

He cut holes out of it to help with air flow and to keep him cooler.

Reply

This December I ran my first half marathon and Galen ran it as his qualifying race! He looked like he wasn’t even breathing hard! It was amazing! I was so excited to see that he won!

Happy birthday! Sounds like a perfect day. Also, fan-girling over that picture of you with Amy and Desiree. Gah!

I loved everything about the trials. Yes, my heart was breaking in a million pieces knowing that someone was going to have to come in fourth. Shalane is a friend of my good friend, so I was irrationally excited for her. When she collapsed in Amy’s arms at the end – I still tear up a little! Training friends are the best friends.

It is really really cold (15-20 tops today) so going for a short run with the dog, then applying myself to some long neglected housework :)

Happy birthday! It looks like you had quite a week of celebrations. My plans today are to stay in the house at all costs – the wind chill is supposed to be -30 (Fahrenheit)!

I dropped my iPhone 5c into a toilet! It sunk to the bottom, I screamed and fished it out, and it worked perfectly fine. I WAS SO LUCKY.

We didn’t get the marathon trials on TV up here (in Canada). Does anyone know where I can watch it online now that it’s done? HELP PLEASE!!!

Loved watching the trials! I had to move part of my long run indoors after my water froze so the bonus was getting to watch the trials while I ran (just seemed right). My 3 year-old asked me “mommy are you in there?” when she saw what I was watching – she’s too cute :) And yeah, I suck with phones too. I’m trying real hard to keep this latest one safe, lol. Happy birthday!

Happy Birthday Janae!! I’m glad you had a great day! You need to get the life proof case for your next phone!!

Happy Birthday! I was so excited to watch the trials and then completely forgot until they were over. Total bummer that Kara didn’t make it, but super cool that Desi did!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! My Valentines Day plans consisted of skyping my boyfriend who lives in new jersey. Other than that… just a normal day! Olympic trials are THE BEST!

Just finished my 20 miler on tap for today so now I get to rest for a couple hours before I force myself to be productive again! Inspired by your sweet potato fixation, I fixed one post-run with a fried egg, black bean and diced tomato saute, Mexican blend cheese, sour cream, and avocado- to die for!

I totally geeked out on the trials- loved every minute of it and thought of how hard those ladies worked for it when I stopped loving my 20 miler today. The determination and guts they showed to keep going when it got tough was so inspiring! And the friendship between Shalane and Amy- so awesome! I felt conflicted for Amy and cheered when she eventually broke off and went for it! Got teary-eyed myself when Kara crossed- heartbroken for her, but, good grief, she has come so far after several tough years. And Meb… My, oh my, he just oozes goodness. I want to be his friend. Then again, who doesn’t!?!

Happy Birthday!

We are taking my great uncle to dinner tonight. His wife passed away a couple of weeks ago. They were married for 68 years! He wants lasagna so we are going out for Italian.

I couldn’t agree with you more on your time trial recap! I kind of fast forwarded through most of the men’s part (sorry), but I did love watching Ward! I would do anything for them to be able to accept the top 4 because I couldn’t pick between Amy, Shalane, Desi, and Kara! My heart went out to Kara, but she still had such a great race and it just goes to show that she’s back!

I’m glad you’re having such a great birthday weekend! My boy friend and I really did Valentines yesterday so today I’m laying low!

Happy birthday, dear Janae!

Happy birthday, Janae!

8 mile run this morning that included my first time up Heartbreak Hill in Hawaii Kai.

Super happy for Meb (he’s just my favorite!) Happy for Amy who placed 4th in 2012, but so sad for Kara. It was heartbreaking watching those times. I think I’d rather miss it by 15 minutes than just a little over a minute :( And Galen Rupp, wow! first time marathoner!

I’m so glad that you had such a fun birthday! It sounds like you were pretty spoiled, which is exactly how it should be! :) For Valentine’s Day I went to church, told my hubby how much I loved him, and now I am snuggling my little girl because the poor thing is sick.:(

Happy Birthday! Sounds like a great birthday!

I took it pretty easy today, we had some sub-zero temps outside, so I wasn’t too excited to go anywhere.

The marathon trials were so inspiring! It made me want to go out and run even though I had just gotten home from an 8 mile run. :)

Happy Birthday! I spent the last couple months in my twenties worrying that my life would change for the worse when I turned 30. Turns out it was probably one of the best years of my life. You will have a blast,.
My hubby and I had a kid free weekend. Dinner out Saturday, movie then grilled steak, shrimp and asparagus, with some much needed together time without interuptions. Very good valentine’s.

Happy 30th Birthday!!! It looks like you had a great day! Well deserved!

My friends and I had stride by stride commentary going on Facebook because one was traveling with her family. She even face timed to see the end of the race yesterday! Now we are planning a viewing party for the olympics – guess I am traveling to DC for it :)

Happy birthday! Sorry one of your bday presents was a phone dropped in water. I have a case that I totally swear by (I’m v. clutzy and also have a little girl) — Lifeproof case. It’s survived drops down mountainsides, daily drops to the ground, and at least one full immersion in water. (Plus they totally replaced my case when a tiny edge was fraying). TOTALLY worth the money (about $75) when you think of how many iphones I haven’t had to replace over the years!!

Sorry about your phone! Happy birthday again!
