The Chorus Run Workout and just a quick hello!

I hope Brooke is okay with us living in Arizona for the winters.  44 degrees in the morning.  Shorts.  A cheesy grin.

I wanted to get my legs moving a bit this morning so I decided to do a chorus workout.  What that means is that whenever the chorus of a song comes on I pick up the pace… so usually for about 30 seconds 3 times per song and then I run at an easy pace for the rest of the song.  Some of the songs I pick up the pace more than others during the chorus but doing this keeps things interesting and my heart rate skyrocketing at different points.  I naturally want to pick up the pace whenever a song gets faster (aka the chorus) and so it is a great way to add in fartleks to a workout without staring at your watch constantly trying to time your fartleks.

Another bonus of running by the canals here is that you get miles and miles of dirt trails to run on which my body loves because of the softer surface.  The ducks are all about the softer surfaces for their joints too.

The star of the show were my New Year’s socks from Brooks.

Also, I didn’t hate being able to stretch outside afterwards in the sunshine.

A huge bonus that comes along with staying at Megan’s parents’ house is that they are always stocked with chocolate covered cinnamon bears.

Love those socks! Isn’t running outside the best? Except when it rains… (as I’ve been worrying all day that it will on my marathon this weekend… please nooooo)

Reply

AHHHH Grant… which marathon? I hope so so so bad that it doesn’t rain for your race and that it isn’t windy (that is my least favorite condition to run in). Good luck and let me know how it goes!

The Jacksonville Bank Marathon! It’s my first ever and I’m excited and nervous and worried and all the things. Checking the weather five days in advance is probably not doing me any good, haha.

That is a GREAT race!! This will be our first year missing it since 2010. :( I’m pretty bummed but at least the temps are dropping for the race!! I hope the rain stays away for you!

You mentioned the cinnamon bears months ago and I have searched high and low with no luck. Who sells them? *My husband will be forever grateful to have an end my quest as well.

Reply

Hey Heather! They are my absolute favorites! I usually get them at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and these ones are also amazing (they even sell them at Costco so that is how you know they are good):

Let me know what you think!!!

I found them at a Winco near me (CA) so you might check any store with a good bulk bin selection

YUM I’ve never had chocolate cover cinnamon bars! That sounds yummy. I’ve also never been to Arizona, but I’ve hear such great things and dirt baths along canals is ideal.

Your monthly socks from Brooks are the best! I just got me a pair of the new Pureflow5 and I tried on the new Launch, but I just didn’t love it. I haven’t found a standard shoe that I can run in and its not cushy enough to be my work shoes so I think it’s just stuck in between for me.

Dirt paths* although dirt baths wouldn’t be so bad either ;)

That’s how San Diego winters are too! Come visit anytime :)

We are going to San Diego TOMORROW!! Any yummy places to eat?

Reply

OMG yes!! Okay here are my suggestions based on food choices:
Tacos: Tacos Perla, Puesto, Galaxy Tacos, anywhere in Old Mission
Noodles: Underbelly (either location), or anywhere in Mira Mesa area.
Italian: anywhere in Little Italy. Seriously great food
Seafood: Sirena, Ironside (In Little Italy)
Pizza: Basic (In East Village)
Breakfast: Breakfast Republic, Snooze an AM Eatery, The Mission
Desserts: Extraordinary Desserts (seriously good!)
*Gaslamp will always have good food choices, too many to list.

A few areas you can run: Mission Bay, Mission Trails, Balboa Park. I have a few others on my blog if you are interested.

Have a great time, my city is AWESOME!!

You are seriously the best ever. EVER! Thank you so much Daisy for taking the time to give me these recommendations! Sending them to my friends now!

If you are in San Diego you must go to Richard Walker’s Pancake House. The apple pancake is the best thing I have ever eaten! If you don’t go early there will be a line out the door but it’s worth waiting for.

The chocolate covered cinnamon bears reminded me of when my sister in law. She loves them but apparently they rarely sale them in Ohio. She said that she found some today but when she took a bite they were nasty. No wonder no one buys them in Ohio.

Those socks are awesome. I live in AZ and could do without the 40 degree weather. This is very unusual for us.

Reply

Really!?! What are the normal temps at this time of year?

Reply

Lows are 40-50 and highs are 60 to 70. Usually 65 is average. We’ll get a freeze in January or February but this year we’ve had a few

Reply

Oh 65 sounds real nice right now!! At least it is better than Utah ha! Hopefully the temps go back to normal asap!

Reply

That is true. They are suppose to next week.

Love the chorus workout! I also like to do that, or if I’m on the treadmill and watching TV- pick up your pace while the show is on and “recover” when it’s commercial :)

Reply

I love doing that. The chorus is the best, most motivating part of the song!

Reply

I am definitely going to try out that chorus workout one of these days – sounds like a lot more fun than staring at my watch!

We finally got some winter weather and I was really excited for a cooler run today. :)

Reply

Those socks are too cute!!!

You wanna know the absolutely most saddest thing you have ever heard? I think I got sick off of eating chocolate covered cinnamon bears about a week or so ago! :( I think that is probably the saddest news you will hear for the rest of the year! ;)

Those socks are pretty cool!

We go to Scottsdale for Thanksgiving week every year. Came so close to renting an apartment for a full year this year. Youngest son graduates high school in 2.5 years $0& hubby turns 60 in February. Starting to make out ‘snowbird’ plans.

This post was SO encouraging for me! We are moving to AZ in 2 months and I’ve never been there…I was so excited to see running trails and beautiful weather! AND I just bought the same brooks shoes. I have shin splints for the first time and am hoping they can work some miracles.

Reply

Arizona looks awesome, and those socks too!

Reply

I never have heard of a chorus workout before, but I love the idea! I really need to implement more speed work into my life, so this sounds perfect.

Reply

We have opposite perspectives on this AZ weather! You’re running in shorts, while I’m all bundled up and whining about it being cold! Glad you’re enjoying your time here in Chandler/Gilbert.

Reply

I just love the lipstick/gloss you have been wearing in a few pictures the past few days … can you tell me what you are wearing? Thank you!!

Reply

I’m jealous of the sunny skies in Arizona! Natural vitamin D does wonders for me during this gloomy season.

I, too, love the idea of a chorus run. I sometimes do an easier version of that when I’m watching TV on the treadmill – pick up the pace during commercial breaks. It’s nice to take those few minutes to challenge myself and zone into my running.

Have fun in San Diego! I’ve been twice, and absolutely love it!

Reply

You’re running the canal right by my house! Hope I catch you out there!

Reply

I love the Chorus run idea!! I am definitely going to try that on my next run! Don’t get too used to that nice weather! ;)

Reply

I thought fartleks were supposed to be random/unstructured/untimed? Otherwise, wouldn’t it just be intervals? Either way, your chorus run idea is genius!! :)

Reply

The Brooks holiday socks are the best. I’ve lived in my Christmas ones and do not want to pack them away…

I love chorus fartleks (that’s just fun to say). :)

Reply

i used to do chorus fartleks back in the day when i had no clue what i was doing, great workout to do without a lot of thinking!!

Reply

4 more days now! :)

Reply

Cool socks! And we spent the day in Pigeon Forge, TN………it was over 70 degrees and I was in shorts and a tshirt!
