My next two races and an easy dinner to try!

I finally did it.  I signed up for a marathon.  I’ve been pretty hesitant to actually register because I wasn’t sure if I would be totally healthy in time for the race but after my 19 miler last weekend I feel confident that I will be able to go run the Tucson Marathon in THIRTY THREE DAYS!!!  I don’t normally run on Sundays but I couldn’t find any Saturday races around the time I’d be ready to go again (all of the Utah marathons are done by now) so my mom, Brooke and I will hit up church after the race:)  I’m stoked for this race because people say it is like a mini St. George course.. the ups aren’t as up and the downs aren’t as down.  My brother lives close by and the temperatures should be perfect (starting in the low 30s and reaching about 70 degrees).  I’m stoked to finally be able to use the last 5 months of training at a race!

I took a picture with my computer because on the screen it shows the course map of the marathon but you can’t see any of that in the picture:)

Also, this weekend I am going down to St. George to run the Snow Canyon 1/2 marathon.  I’ve heard so many great things about this race and I will now be able to get in my St. George running just on a different race than the one I was planning on doing in the first place:)   My coach has very specific paces for me to do at the race so I won’t be ‘racing’ it exactly but it will be a hard effort.  I don’t want to go all out because I’ve got a marathon to save my legs for!

Dinner hit the spot last night.  I made some quinoa and topped it with zucchini and chicken (cooked in olive oil and TJ’s seasonings), cubed sweet potatoes (baked) and avocado.  One of those meals that just makes your whole body feel better after eating it.

 IMG 0104

Brooke was a huge fan of sticking the quinoa to her face.

After dinner we got together with some friends.

Time to get some speed work done this morning!  Just a few more weeks with some hard runs, a taper and then race day.  Followed by a nice little break for the holidays and then I do it all over again because I love it.

Who has a race coming up?  Which one?

I need advice from people that have done the Tucson Marathon in the past pretty please!  I need all the tips that I can get:)

Do you like to travel for races or do you prefer to do ones that are close to where you live?

Three ingredients that you cook with most often?

-sweet potatoes, avocado and chicken:)

I love traveling for marathons! I don’t always have my best races, but it’s so fun to see new places!
3 ingredients: sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, broccoli

Congrats on picking a marathon – exciting that it’s so close now! I’ve never flown to race, but a drive doesn’t bother me all that much. It makes the race feel more like an “event” whereas NYC being local to me just felt bizarre thrown into the weekend.

Reply

So exciting about your race(s)! Congratulations on signing up..that’s always such a scary step. You got this!! I don’t have any big ones coming up, but I’m doing a Turkey Trot and Jingle Bell run to finish out the year!

I like to travel for races, but the expenses can really add up quickly and that can just add to the race day anxiety, so I don’t do it too often. Luckily Pittsburgh has tons of races!

Reply

I’m excited you found a race, especially one so similar to the St. George course! I have two coming up, Thunder Road (Charlotte, NC) in two weeks and the St. Jude Memphis marathon in four weeks! Then time for a rest!

I’m working on marathons in all 50 states, so it is safe to say I like to travel :)

We did sweet potatoes with fish last night. One of my favorite meals!

Reply

I took a screen shot of that dinner because, yum! And even though Tucson is a couple of hours from my parents’ house…I sort of wish you could pack me in your suitcase! Haha! Have fun in St Geezy this weekend! You will do amazing, obvi!! Love ya!!

Reply

Congrats on signing up for the race! You deserve a nice break after :) I cook with those ingredients the most too! I prefer to do races that are close to me but that actually hasn’t happened in years. Most are at least an hour away and require an overnight stay before.

Reply

My next race is a Turkey Trot and then things get real with a a half a full aon the horizon. (crossing fingers I stay injury free)

I like to travel for races, it’s an adventure.

I cook with broccoli constantly. I buy the huge 5 pound bag at costco. Last nite I made broccoli and cheese soup, it was delish!

Yay girl!! The Tuscon marathon sounds perfect!! What a fun mini vacation girls trip :)

I think it’s best when people use races for a training run– I don’t think I could mentally do that, I always feel like I need to go 100% at races!

Looking forward to some good race recaps from ya :)

Reply

I’m glad you were able to find a marathon that works for you! I was so disappointed for you when you had to skip St. George– I’m glad you get another shot!

I don’t like traveling for races. Running and triathlons (<–my habit) are expensive enough as it is. Add in time off work, hotels, and gas/airline fees and it's even more expensive.

Reply

Yay! Congrats on picking Tucson! I haven’t heard much about that race before, so
I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts! My next race is a simple turkey trot before I stuff my face with all the thanksgiving foods I can muster!

Reply

So excited for you!! I have a race in a little more than a month, so I’m being very intentional in my training right now.

I definitely prefer closer races. Travel stresses me out!

Give me chicken, a golden potato and avocado, and I’ve got a perfect meal. :)

Reply

Good luck on your races!

The 3 ingredients I cook with the most often are eggs, ground turkey, and broccoli. I make eggs for breakfast almost every day – so good!

Reply

I’m so happy you get to still use all of your hard work and training! That sounds like a perfect course.

I love to travel, but there’s a lot less stress doing marathons close by! Although my favorite that I’ve done was in Amsterdam.

3 ingredients: sweet potatoes, coconut milk, Brussels sprouts

Reply

Yay! I’m happy for you that you picked a race!!

I’m running the Monumental Marathon this weekend! I’m going in with no expectations, as I’m only 3 weeks out from my last marathon. I’m getting pretty excited though!

Reply

Good luck with your half! That’s exciting. I’ve been cooking with quinoa a lot lately — it’s so quick and easy! only 15 minutes to make. yum.

Reply

YAY for picking a marathon! So SO excited for you! My next race I’m signed up for is BOSTON, but I hope to do a few halves and shorter races before April!

I’ve always stuck close to home for races, because I think nothing beats sleeping in your own bed before a race, but the idea of traveling for races has always appealed to me. Hopefully in the next year or so I can start to make that more of a reality :)

Things I cook with the most: cous cous, avocado and feta.

REALLY really excited for you. It’s gonna be awesome

Reply

I’ve heard good things about Tucson. My next two races are Snow Canyon and my first 50K … which is on Antelope Island (gulp).

Good luck.

Reply

I am running the Philly Half on November 22nd, and I am not really training for it which is stupid.
I had two terrible runs two weeks ago, and since then I am pretty scared to leave the house and do more than 5 miles :(
Any suggestions on how to fight these feelings?

Reply

Congrats on signing up for both races! So excited to see how you do. I’ve traveled for most of my races but next year most will be near where I live, which I think I’ll prefer.

Reply

The next race that I am training for is the Dopey Challenge in Disney World. woo woo! I’m excited for it!

I do like to travel for races – the farthest I’ve traveled so far has been Las Vegas for Ragnar.

Reply

Great race choice!! I am thinking about doing Phoenix this February. Good luck!!

Reply

I don’t have a race coming up, but I did just do the Castaway Cay 5k on Disney’s Private island. I walked the whole thing, pretty much, but I was proud of actually doing it. :-)

Reply

I love sweet potatoes but don’t cook them as often as I could. Too 3 ingredients – chicken, spinach and rice
All the best with your marathon. I was so inspired watching the NYC marathon that I am thinking of signing up for a winter race too. And I entered the sweepstakes to try to get into the marathon in 2016. I’ve been putting it off for too long. Time to just do it!

Reply

No races coming up – there isn’t really anything after this weekend in the Ottawa area except races related to Santa/New Year’s eve.

I’m not sure whether I like traveling to races or not. I usually travel for 2 races a year. Because I can’t usually take Fri/Mon’s off, it makes it really hard to actually go anywhere far. NYC I had to take Monday off – but it really depends on who my boss is at the moment. I’m also not a fan of sitting in the car after either :-( BUT – it is fun to stay in a hotel

Reply

We are exactly the same on the ingredients I most often cook with. They are just simply the most delicious on the planet.

Best of luck ramping up for Tucson. You will crush it!

Reply

So exciting that you picked a marathon!! I have been debating a marathon that’s happening this weekend, but I think it’s just wishful thinking that I’m in good enough shape for it! Boston was going to be the next big race for me, but that darn cut off time got me :(
I’d rather do a race close to home. Less chance for me to be late or forget something important!!

Reply

I would love to travel for races, but that doesn’t normally happen. I think if I do travel for a race is need to give myself an extra day or two before the race to make sure I am adjusted to conditions and altitude and all that.

Reply

YAY for finalizing marathon plans! I love races close to me, logistics for traveling can sometimes be stressful. And plus – it can be so expensive!

Reply

SO excited you were able to now sign up for a marathon!!!! Three ingredients I cook with most often – sweet potatoes, oatmeal and peanut butter….I like to travel for races. I don’t get to that often but it’s been fun when I have!

Reply

My 3 ingredients would be chocolate, peanut butter, and chicken. Not together though, that doesn’t seem like it would work.

Reply

I think you are making the right decision. I know you are going to be ready and rock the marathon as well as the half this weekend. That is super exciting and can’t wait to see you hit your goal paces!

Reply

I lived in Tucson for over 10 years!!! I’m so excited for you because seriously Fucson has some of the very best race courses and temperatures are perfect of course. I’m so very happy for you!!!

Reply

Yay!!! You are coming to my neck of the desert!!! :-D I hope the weather is perfect for your race and that you get that sub-3! We will be rooting for you!

Reply

Woo hoo!!! Good luck to you! That’s so exciting!

Reply

Congrats on signing up for the marathon! I’m excited for you that you get your redemption!
I’d love to travel for a race! Great way to experience new places.
Three ingredients- sweet potatoes, chicken, eggs

I like close by races for easier logistics but I do love a good runcation.

I am running an Elf Run 10k on the 22nd, it is part of a winter series 10k, one every month until March, I feel so hardcore running outside in the snow!

Only tip I have to give is You got this! (I don’t think that is a tip, but you do!)

I am going into my second year of my running career and I think traveling for races may become normal…

Chicken, red pepper flakes, brown rice

Reply

Hillbilly Hike Half coming up this weekend! Hooray! Love your dinner and so going to try it with barley instead of quinoa this week. Quinoa does not agree with me :-(. Things I cook with most often: garlic, chicken, beans.

After the Chicago Marathon, it’s time again to travel and run, but this time closer to home .. My next race will be on Sunday, the best race in Spain, called “Behobia – San Sebastian”, 20k !
In fact, you arrive to the starting line from France, you have to cross the border before start running! This is funny!

It is an amazing race, the atmosphere is like a big marathon! Can’t wait!

Reply

I have 2 races in the next 2 weekends- the Savannah R&R Half this Saturday and the Las Vegas R&R half next Sunday. I’m super-excited for both of them.

I love quinoa!

Congrats on signing up for your races. There’s something about knowing you have an event coming up that makes it easier to get out there and train.

And the picture of you & Brooke running- LOVE!!!

Reply

Congrats on picking a marathon and feeling good enough to do one!

Don’t all toddlers love sticking food to their faces? She’s adorable.

I like traveling for races, I even PR’d in DC.

3 ingredients: quinoa, chicken and greens (I rotate them).

Great news. We’ll be watching and waiting for that awesome sub 3.

I’m so excited for you! It’s so great your hard work won’t go to waste. I can’t wait to see how you do in this marathon.

I was looking for something simple and delicious to make for dinner tonight…I may have to try this. Thanks for sharing!

Can’t wait for you to race your marathon – we’ll all be rooting for you! :)

One of my dearest friends lives in Tuscon. I should visit her and cheer on your marathon.

Awesome!!! You’ll be great! Best of luck!

I got a fun 15K this weekend – The Hot Chocolate Series! Course is not that pretty and logistically it’s kind of a nightmare … But the chocolate at the end is totally worth it!

I’ve traveled a lot for races (both marathons and halfs) and it’s a ton of fun. Definitely easier to run races in your hometown but something about traveling and running in completely different scenery is incredible!

Reply

No Way!!!!! I’ll be there too!! I’m so excited – hopefully I’ll see you in Tucson!

Reply

So exciting about your upcoming marathon! Even more excited that you’re feeling healthy and up to the challenge. Setbacks are no good but, they DO NOT define us!!!
I almost always have to travel to race longer distances because I live in no man’s land. We had our first marathon here last April and I used that as my first marathon as well. I like to travel though so I don’t mind. :)
I most often cook with sweet potatoes, chicken and eggs. Just depends on what my rut of the month is. :)

Reply

I’m running the Savannah RNR Marathon on Saturday! I have 1 more 5k and 1 five miler left on the calendar this year (both in November) and then I’m taking a nice long training break. I’m not a big fan of traveling for races only because of the cost. I’d rather run a few more races in the year and stay close to home versus blowing my “running budget” on travel. Maybe someday!

Reply

So pumped for you and your upcoming marathon!!! You are going to rock it! I just know it!
I just ran the NYC Marathon on Sunday so I’m taking some time off. My next race is in January! A half marathon in Central Park!

Reply

Ahh so exciting!!! Can’t wait to follow along throughout the next few weeks :) (And then obviously every day after that for as long as you blog)

Reply

I ran the Tucson Marathon back in 2009. The first half was rolling, but the last half – that constant slight downhill (if that is still how the course is) absolutely KILLED my quads. I basically walked the last 3 miles. It is, however, to this day my fastest marathon so I know you will absolutely rock it. Have an amazing race – and looking forward to following your training before hand. Where the heart goes – the body will follow!

Reply

You are hard core! Mormon that is. My dad use to make us go to church down at lake Powell. Funny memories. I admire your dedication.
Good luck at Snow Canyon! I was thinking about that one but I am working.

Reply

I did the Tuscon marathon!!! I have family in Arizona so I picked that one to help me qualify for Boston. This was probably in 2009? Yes. So quite a while ago. So let me be totally honest here. It was the worst marathon I have ever done, mostly because I expected it to be fast (point to point, net downhill) and the downhill trashed my legs so unbelievably fast. Just having that feeling of having to put on the breaks for that long was too hard on my quads. I qualified for Boston 3 months later on a hilly route in my local city of Vancouver BC. There’s just something about net downhills that don’t work well for me.

Reply

Congratulations on your upcoming races!! :) I was going to do a 15k as training for my half in January but it has been so hot, the race is in the afternoon, and it is going to be 90 degrees today :( So, I will do my training earlier in the day instead :)

My husband and I have traveled to other states for his races. I have found it is important to get there at least a few days ahead of time to adjust. The body needs that adjustment period to do its best.

Three things: lettuce, chicken, dried cranberries (favorite combo) with pomegranate dressing. But, I might have to try your quinoa, sweet potatoes, and zucchini. Yummy!!

Reply

I have the Disney Wine & Dine Half Saturday night!!!

Reply

I have a half in April and a turkey trot on Thanksgiving! Marathon in a year… pray for my soul and my poor, poor legs. And yet, we sickly love it… :) #alwaysworthit

I like to stay in the area because college, but I think a destination race would be so fun!

Oatmeal, peanut butter, eggs = why I am alive today. Combine them all at once and your stomach becomes very confused.

Reply

I’m doing the Mustache Dasche 5K a week from Saturday, and I’m thinking of doing another 5K the day after for a back-to-back weekend of running! I haven’t done much running at all since the Portland Marathon and my legs are anxious to get going again.

I’ve been looking for races in the places I’ve traveled this last year. I looked for one in Missouri when I was visiting family over the summer, but I’m kind of glad I didn’t find one, because I did one run while I was there and almost died from the humidity. Not dramatic at all.

Chicken, potatoes, and mushrooms are my big three ingredients.

Reply

I’m so excited for your races! I’m also glad that you’ve recovered quickly and are back to your speedy self!

I ran 2 half marathons in October so I’m taking it easy this month. I set a 1:33 PR at the first one and finished 5th female overall in the second. :)

That simple and healthy dish looks delicious– I love piling things together like that. I’ll definitely have to recreate that one!

Following your blog has inspired me to start a little running social media account of my own. We will see if it turns into a blog but for now you can find me on Instagram @runningtheroost :)

So glad you’re going to be able to race, Janae!

I prefer Saturday races, too, and they’re hard to find. But… I’m running the Canyon City Marathon (https://www.runrevel.com/rcc) this Saturday! It’s about 2 hours from my house which is pretty nice – no time difference to deal with but we’ll be going the day before.

Reply

I’ll be at Snow Canyon too, but I’m just running the 5K. I’ve only got 4 months of running under my belt, so I’m not quite ready for anything longer. I do have a 10K in a month, though, so I’m working my way up.

Everyone that has done it says Snow Canyon is a gorgeous run, and the half is pretty much all downhill (sweet!), so it will probably be the first half I do in 2016.

Bonus points: I can stay at my mom’s house!

Reply

I live in Tucson ?! I’ve run the Tucson half marathon several times and my boyfriend has run the full (he is planning to get a marathon PR this year!). It’s a great course and one that many people PR and BQ on. The weather is perfect (like you mentioned). The hardest part is that it is mostly downhill, which can be tough on your legs. You just have to adjust your stride a bit to compensate. It’s also easy to start out really fast (I was about 45-60 seconds ahead of my minute per mile pace for the first few miles last time I raced it and that ended up costing me a PR when I was too tired at the end), so try to stick to your race plan even though the course will encourage you to speed up! There is great course support and they have well-spaced water stops. Last time, they gave out clif shots but I’ve also heard of them giving out gu. You run almost exclusively on Oracle Road, with some detours into Saddlebrook (a community in north Tucson/oro valley). The point to point is awesome and you have views of the mountains the entire time. Overall, it’s a great race and I think you’re going to rock it!!! Best of luck girl!

Reply

Yipeee!!! Two races to look forward to! I’m so excited for you :)

I usually race close to home. I really want to travel to a big fun race soon. You are so lucky to have a great support crew that helps you when you race.

My three ingredients are: broccoli, red bell pepper, sweet potato

Reply

I’m considering a half-marathon on November 14 here in Gainesville… I’m still experiencing some migrating soreness and pain, so I’m waiting until it gets a little closer before I sign up!

My staple ingredients (chiefly for baking): sweet potato, blueberries, and bananas!

Reply

Yay for your next marathon….. Super excited for you and I know you are going to kill it. Best of luck

I am running the Snow Canyon half also. Maybe I’ll see you at the start. I just love your blog!! So much fun and so many good running tips and food ideas!!!

Awesome, janae! So glad you are feeling healthy enough to sign up and nothing beats running with confidence! Especially after a layoff/illness/injury. I’m soon excited for you!!!!

Ok, that picture of Brooke with quinoa all over her face. I died!!!!!

My next race will be Boston 2016.
I’ve only traveled for 1/2 and full marathons. Its nice because I get a mini vacation out of them.
i dont really run shorter races much…But if i do, I prefer to stay local.

Reply

my next race is in 2 week at Disneyland for the Avengers Gauntlet Challenge. I love traveling to race, if the race is local it doesnt feel real to me…is that weird?!

So glad you posted one last pic of Brooke’s race – that 1 is my fave! :)

Yay!!!!!!!! I am so happy for you Janae. You will LOVE snow canyon and Tuscan I think. I have missed you so much I just binge read your blog to catch up. I love you!

I love racecations! It’s a great way to visit new places while getting a good workout. Good luck on your next race! :)

Congrats! Tucson is an amazing course I ran it in 2013 and loved it! It is a lot of downhill with one surprise painful uphill at the end?. I think you will love it. And rock your goal time!

Reply

So exciting about your next races! You will rock both of them!

I am traveling down to Gilbert for their half marathon in a couple weekends, really focused on a sub-2! Not used to traveling for races since I live in Flag, so hopefully it won’t be too bad.

That quinoa dish looks delicious! I’ve been big on black beans, mushrooms, and zucchini lately.

I am thinking about training for a marathon next year :) I love my Garmin 225. I have yet to play with all the features – I look forward to the training applications it has!

The only races I’ve traveled for are ones in the town I grew up in. It sounds awesome to travel to one in a place I haven’t been though! I would love to do a disney one someday!

I’m so happy for you and glad you are healthy enough to put your training into action in another marathon! I’ve been training since May for my third marathon this weekend at the Outer Banks in NC. I’m solo ready to do this thing! We’re looking at 20mph winds as of today so it might turn out to be quite the experience. Oh well, can’t control that part!

Reply

I have a race coming up in 19 days! It’ll be my second marathon. I’m starting to get very nervous.

I prefer to stay local for races because I tend to overpack, so this will be interesting to see if just a few short weeks. :)

Yay for signing up for two races! You are going to smoke them ;)

PURPLE sweet potatoes are the jam, J. Those, with eggs and avocado make my lunch every single day! :)

Thirty three days until you kill it! I cannot wait to follow along for the upcoming month, You are going to do incredible (as per usual).

Rice Krispies are amazing. Without a doubt, they are one of my favorite sweet treats, and I had one yesterday! I cannot get enough.

Reply

I love to travel for races and make it a sightseeing trip as well as a race. The further the race the better :D
Three ingredients: sweet potato, eggs, broccoli.

Reply

I also chose not to race on Sunday, so travelling to longer races is a must – there are just no Saturday marathons in Ontario!

Reply

I did the Tucson half in 2010 and it was awesome–you will love it! There’s not much crowd support, so make sure you have lots of good tunes to entertain you. The views of the sunrise over the mountains are breathtaking. Also, the course is mostly downhill with some small uphills and a pretty steep surprise uphill at mile 11 of the half (so should be mile 24 for the full). Still though, you will do great–that course remains my half PR after 5 years.

Reply

Congratulations and good luck!!! ?

Reply

This is awesome and so exciting! You will rock that race!!!!

Reply

I don’t know what it is about RKT, but I can eat an entire pan of them, no problem. I am sure this piece of information is a complete surprise to you ;)

I am so excited for you to have picked a race! It will feel so good to get out there and run that course after this long training cycle! Speaking of races, I will be in St George this weekend. Maybe I will have to come and cheer you on!

Chicken, cilantro and cauliflower. That sounds awful together. lol. I just use cilantro in almost all my dishes, chicken is my main source of ‘meat’ and I eat roasted cauliflower or riced cauliflower all the time.

I am still bummed about lunch today. We better make it happen next week!

Reply

I like out of town races because it feels like a vacation and I don’t have to pay to run the same routes I run for free!

And 3 ingredients: chicken, onion, avocado

Reply

I’ve run Tucson twice, and the elevation map is deceptive…the net downhill is not dramatic at all, barely noticeable most of the time. The first six miles, until you join the highway, are more rolling (in my recollection). After that it’s pretty much a straight shot down the road, except for the out and back to Biosphere, of course. Since you have family in Tucson, you probably know all the things to do, but I really enjoyed the Luminaria Nights at Tucson Botanical Garden. It’s like a fairy land, with cookies.

Reply

I have mixed thoughts about running races close to home vs exploring. Most of the time I like to explore new places but then when race time comes I lose motivation if I have to drive far to get there, haha!

Reply

Yum! That combination looks delicious – perfect healthy plate of carbs, protein, and healthy fat!

Reply

Yeah for Tuscon! I have been there, ran the Half. Have friends that help put on the events around that race (Pam Reed, ultra runner included!). So we volunteered and ran! I actually waited with the timing crew at the place where the Half starts for my girlfriend who was running the full and we ran together. Second half is downhill, that’s for sure! You just do not sweat there – very odd! So remember, GLIDE is your friend! ENJOY! YOU WILL ROCK IT!

Yay! Another Tucson race runner! I just moved here back in June and will be running the half. I’ve heard that it has a decent amount of downhill that can shred your quads. Guess we’ll find out in another month :)
