Marathon Race Strategy and St. George Marathon Training Week #14!!!

I don’t run on Sundays and so I don’t set my alarm clock and my favorite little 3 year old alarm clock was gone too—> I slept in a bit.  I did finally pull myself out of bed and get to church with the girls.

IMG 9202

I took two food pictures yesterday.

1- Protein Kodiak Cakes waffles with blueberries.

IMG 9205

2. Marshmallow popcorn from a bridal shower.  One of those foods that once I start eating it, I don’t stop until it is gone.

IMG 9204

I am very grateful for good girlfriends to keep me out and about doing things while the Brookester was gone…

 IMG 9176

and then I got to pick her up late last night at the airport:)

IMG 9215

For the month of October we arranged it so that Brooke will be with me that weekend so that she will be at the finish line of my marathon… Just like she was last year at St. George.   I can’t wait.

IMG 9104

Just a little bit about my race day strategy for the marathon.  My coach will be giving me a mile by mile pace chart according to the elevation gains and losses and I will be sticking to it like glue.  I am pretty competitive and so it is hard for me to not ‘race’ against other people around me but for this race, I HAVE TO STICK TO OUR PLAN.  I can get away with going out too fast/trying to race with the half-marathon distance but for the marathon… I’ve gotta stick to my own race.  My goal is sub 3.  I’ve gotta be smart and not let the people around me/adrenaline make me go out too fast only to die for the last few miles and miss my goal.

The most challenging part of this course—> miles 7-13.   I am going to really have to hold back in those first 7 miles (while staying on pace though), make it through those 5 hard miles of lots of ups and then I can let loose.  The last 10k of this race is great for making a PR.  It is down and flat.  I think I will be able to really cruise through those miles as long as I stick to my coach’s plan.  So yeah, that’s the plan.

—————————————————————

I just signed up for another race.  It is one of my absolute favorites.  The Haunted Half.  It is on Halloween day this year (the Provo one is) and I cannot wait… everyone dresses up, it is on a beautiful course and holidays + running = happiness.

This will be one of my good friend’s FIRST 1/2 marathons and so I will be running it with her and eating candy along the way.

Now to work on our costumes..  from this race a previous year:

St. George Marathon Training Week #14… it’s almost game time!

Monday:  8 treadmill miles @ 7:20 average pace.  All miles at 7:30 pace with 12 x 45 second strides ranging from 7:00 to 5:30 pace with 1 minute recoveries after each stride @ 8:00 pace.

Tuesday:  5 miles @ 8:00 pace

Wednesday:  10 miles total @ 7:29 average.  10 min @ 8:00 pace, 10 min @ 6:40 pace, 2 min @ 8:41 pace, 8 minutes @ 6:15 pace, 4 min @ 8:25 pace, 6 min @ 6:03 pace, 6 min @ 9:03 pace, 4 min @ 6:02 pace, 8 min @ 9:11 pace, 2 min @ 5:44 pace, cool-down @ 8:34 pace.  CRAZY hard workout for me.  I could not hit the paces that i was hoping too but it happens and you move on and then you have a better run another day.

Thursday:  5 miles @ 7:53 average

Friday:  3 treadmill miles @ 8:28 pace

Saturday:  14 miles @ 6:55 average.  First 6 @ 7:30 pace and then the last 8 miles @ 6:28 pace.   Finally had a good feeling run which built my confidence back up a bit (the other runs of the week were making me question things…) for the marathon.

Sunday:  OFF:)

45 miles total.  A little bit more tapering with each week until race day!

Great week of training!! I’m so excited to see how you do at St. George. I can’t believe it’s already almost here! The Halloween Half sounds like so much fun too, but my favorite holiday race is on Thanksgiving.. I love Turkey Trots and feel like it gives me permission to eat and be lazy allllll day long.

Reply

One day I’ll have to do a Halloween race! I’ve never run in costume but looks like fun. I wound up with a stomach bug this weekend which threw all my training off, plus I ate nothing good :/

Reply

I love the Santa race seeing everyone dressed up in their holiday fear just makes it all the more cheery& festive!

Reply

My favorite holiday races, definitely Halloween. You should dress as a donut, I saw the cutest donut costume at TJMaxx and I thought of you.

Reply

My best run was at my half marathon yesterday! I blew my PR out of the water by 15 minutes. I am pumped for some more fall running!

Reply

My favorite thing when I cross a finish line is the look on my husbands face when I see him. I can just tell he is so proud of me, and his reasons for being proud aren’t tied up in a time goal or anything else like mine usually are. It’s pretty great!

My runs this week were all pretty good. I’m tapering so they all feel short right now!

Best thing I ate this weekend – my moms beef stew! It is finally cool enough to eat it!!

Reply

I had a great run week! Best run: 23 miler Toughest run: running at 4am in Memphis!
Best food: chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting!!!
Finish line: BOSTON!
Race holiday: Thanksgiving! It’s a family tradition.

Running last week went well! Raced a 10k Saturday and was glad to be able to race again.

My favorite finish line is the Cowtown Half. My family has been there both years I’ve run it, and I love rounding the final corner and seeing/hearing them. :)

Reply

Ah, it must have been nice to only have 14 miles on Saturday! I did my longest run on the training cycle on Sat: 18 miles in the morning and then a fun glow 5K at night! Now it’s time to tape and then fly up to Chicago! Eeek!

That’s so nice that you were able to arrange for Brooke to be at the finish line waiting for you. I know celebrating your PR with her will be really good inspiration/motivation during the race! :)

Reply

Still my favorite finish line was my first half marathon almost 2 years ago. I had two girlfriends cheering me on at the turn of the finish and I still get teary eyes thinking about how accomplished I felt and the support I had along the way.

I’m running a Halloween day race too! A 10k!

Sounds like a great racing strategy, but I know how hard it is to not go full force at the start of a race! But I’m actually making it my goal for the races I’ll be running this fall/winter…. negative splits! So I’m going to have to tame this mind and these legs of mine to hold back a tad at the beginning :) YOU GOT THIS Janae! Can’t wait for you to succeed at this marathon– I know you will do it!

Reply

That race was so awesome. How you managed to PR wearing your pirate costume is beyond me. It’s so incredible…I raced on Saturday and that was the only run I did. LOL…so by default it must be the best ;)

Reply

I’m so happy that Halloween is on a Saturday this year! It means me hubs will be home from work for our son’s first “walking” halloween, and a party at my husband’s aunts. Thinking of a good costume for his is hard!!

Reply

Yay for Brooke being there at the end! Sounds like you are all set- just need to tick off those days!

Reply

Awesome workouts!! You crushed your long run last week!! Best holiday to run on = Thanksgiving.. makes me feel less bad about eating every single kind of dessert :)

Reply

So glad Brookers is back! And that she will be at your race!!

My favorite holiday is Halloween. — I love to wear a good Halloween costume! And racing in one is super fun too!

Reply

My best workout of the week was my 10 mile tempo run at marathon pace. Those long tempos really give a boost to my confidence!
That’s so special that you get to have Brooke at the finish line! She must be so proud of her mom!

Reply

What a great week of training! I think my hardest run last week was my mile repeats on Tuesday, although they weren’t as bad as I expected them to be!

Reply

Still no running, but on Saturday my foot started feeling INFINITELY better so I’m trying to keep taking it easy and maybe I can try running again by the end of the week! I don’t want to try again too soon (I made that mistake a couple of weeks ago already).

Best thing I ate this weekend –> Lamb that my boyfriend made yesterday. It was soOooo good.

Best finish line –> Boston, definitely. But the marathon a BQ’ed at this spring (the Cox Providence in Rhode Island) was prettty great too because I saw everyone cheering me on .2 miles away and then my boyfriend sprinted through the crowd so he was right at the finish line only a few seconds after I crossed.

Favorite holiday race –> Thanksgiving! Then I feel like I really earned all that food :)

Running last week was great for coming back from an injury. I love Turkey Trots, and can’t wait to do a couple this year!

Reply

My best run was my 20 miler, even though my knee and foot started complaining at mile 13 and didn’t shut up all day. They seem better now, will test them on a 14 miler tomorrow.

My favorite finish line was at my first full marathon……my husband (boyfriend at the time) was waiting for me and I got my medal and a framed certificate with a duplicate race bib and it said “first marathon”!

I haven’t raced any holiday races, but I like running on my own on holidays……..I feel so tough while everyone else is just sleeping in.

I had the best burrito two nights in a row from an amazing local tex-mex place. Spinach wrap, black beans, fire chicken (spicy), sour cream, tomatoes, onions, and pineapple salsa….now I am drooling!

Reply

I love running races with my bffs, and I even like when we run different distances so we stagger our finish line times. That way someone is usually there to cheer as you take off and someone is at the finish.

Best thing I ate all weekend was a potato/egg/pico bowl and a new restaurant in town. So good!

Reply

You’re rocking your training, Janae and that sounds like a good plan sure to get you that sub 3!
Best run was my 5 mile progression run. I felt strong!
Best thing I ate- Ahi tuna sandwich with Asian slaw
I love Thanksgiving races!

Reply

My running was kind of terrible this week – humidity and low motivation just made all my runs drag. I got my last 20 miler in on Sunday, which was fortunately my best run of the week!

The best thing I ate this weekend was pizza with pepperoni, breaded eggplant and onions. A weird combo, but SO good!

My favorite finish line was a little half I ran last fall. It is still my PR, and both my mom and boyfriend were at the finish line! :)

Reply

favorite race finish line is still Hershey Park half! All the chocolate and cookies :) Best thing I ate over the weekend was pizza and an ice cream sundae. Oh, and Red Mango for lunch yesterday!

Reply

The best thing I ate was homemade hummus with pita. So good! But I am already dreaming of cider and donuts with the changing of the seasons!

Reply

I haven’t ever done the haunted half but every year it seems more enticing. I just don’t know how things would go running in a costume for me. It seems like it would be annoying.
My favorite holiday race (and probably the only one I’ve done) is the 4th of July in Provo. I think I need to look into more holiday race days.

Reply

It’s SO hard not to get caught up in the excitement of a race! I had a trail race this past weekend and was sitting in second place for a while before realizing there was NO way I had the ability to maintain that for the entire race! Haha. Sticking to the plan is so important–that’s why you have one!

Reply

Best race finish line was The dino half this past May. it was my 1st half marathon and my boys grabbed each hand and ran across the finish line with me. Best thing I ate over the weekend was Costa Vida chips and guac. always crave that stuff after a good run. My favorite Holiday is Halloween being a October baby it’s always been my favorite time of year with Fall as well. I’ll also be at the Haunted Half in Provo. I’ll be running the 5k this year with my sister in law ( who is blind) this will be her 1st run EVER! we got our costumes decideded on and are under wraps until race day ( there awesome!)

Reply

I HOPE I MEET YOU THERE. That is incredible that you will be running with your sis in law. I can’t wait to see your costumes:) I have heard great things about the dino half and that is adorable that your boys ran in with you! Now you have me craving costa chips and guac. Have a great day Molly!

Reply

Janae,

I’d LOVE to meet you that’d be awesome! I hope you get your Costa fix ;) Have a great day too!

Reply

Oh, my favorite race finish line was earlier this year at a really small charity 10k. I’m not really that fast, but the race was really small, so I actually won! First and only time that ever happened, so I figured I should savor it. Plus, they didn’t get the picture they wanted, so we had to recreate it and I got to cross the finish line again. :)

Reply

That half marathon sounds so fun! I have never dressed up for a race – need to put that on my list. I did the Chicago 20 mile ready to run race yesterday – my longest by far, so even though not an official race, it’s my favorite finish line. I am looking forward to tapering….
You are rocking your training – way to go!

Reply

Wow the race is so close!!! You’re going to rock it!!

I was wondering what your/your coaches goal time for you is? A lot of your workouts are run at faster paced than they would to aim for a 2:59 it seems. With the fast finish runs typically being at 6:30 is that your goal pace for the race? Not sure how training works like that–but I assume you want to run plenty of miles at “MP” to acclimate your body to the pace and that seems to be your consistent pace for longer fast segments! :) it’d be cool to have a post on this before OR after race day, explaining what the different paces “mean” and how they translate to the marathon distance!

you have been working for this goal for years and I am 100% rooting for you to get it this race!! Hard work pays off, and you’re a model runner in the hard work and dedication department! :) go janae!!!

Reply

Thank you so so much!!! I really appreciate you and your support:) So we are aiming for around a 2:57ish… we don’t want to cut it too close. With the way the course is I will be aiming for the last miles to be around a 6:30 and so I think we are trying to simulate that on those fast finish long runs. My long runs have been done on similar elevation gains/losses to the race and so we are trying to create the last 8 miles of the race with those faster miles. Does that make sense?

Reply

Yes, that makes a lot of sense and seems like a great strategy–training and race-wise! Thank you for answering my question! :) and I can’t wait till race day for you! I always love your recaps! You’re a great runner. You got this!

Reply

Favorite finish line was the Marine Corps Marathon in 2013 … My first Marathon ever! It was the most incredible feeling crossing the finish line and even though I didn’t see any of my family/friends at the end, I was on cloud 9. I had the biggest smile on my face the last 3 miles and I probably looked like a crazy person :)

Best thing I ate all weekend … Pie at my friend’s wedding. I don’t even like pie but they had pies from Bang Bang Pie Shop instead of wedding cake. It was actually incredible.

Have a good Monday!!

Reply

I had some yummy French toast casserole this weekend.
My run on Sunday wasn’t too bad. 17 miles. I did walk some at the end but it was still a decent overall time based on my no time goal approach to the NYC marathon this year. I just want to enjoy myself and take it all in.
I love running on Easter Sunday. Usually it’s just a training run but I wear bunny ears :)

Reply

I managed a 70 mile week last week after the marathon. <—- crazy!!! Tired legs though, for sure. I'm excited for your marathon! It looks like a great plan.

Reply

I’m exciting to “watch” (ok – watch the results board) you race St George!

My worst run last week was a little 3K run in the blazing hit up a hill – that was just silly. Best run was yesterday’s 5K race, although it wasn’t my best race.

I made a bacon burger yesterday and it was pretty tasty!

Reply

Worst and Best: third half marathon, and it was hilly and humid! Definitely a test of my mental resolve, but had to walk a little at mile 12. Plus side is, it wasn’t my slowest 1/2 time, right smack between my PR and my slowest for a 13-miler! And it was my fave race finish line because my best friend, her family, and my boyfriend were all there :)

Best meal was a Blue Apron pork ramen with eggplant. My body needed every bit of that!

Fave running holiday: Thanksgiving. Gotta make room for all those mashed potatoes, y’all :)

Reply

I love that your coach is giving you mile by mile paces! That’s going to help so much. No thinking necessary- just go out and do it (easier said than done, but I know you can do it!)

Saturday I ran a trail race that was a lot hillier and tougher than I expected. I also tripped and fell in the first mile, so I had to finish up with a bleeding leg and dirt all over. No fun :( I did win my age group, so I was happy about that!

Reply

Mm, I ate a waffle after looking at your food pictures this morning. Also, love all your shoes from your church picture! :)

It’s finally cooled off, so running has been great this week. I wish we could press a button and change the weather to a perfect temperature when we’re about to go running outside. I guess that would take all the adventure out of it, though! Happy Monday!

Reply

Loving following your St. George training! Fav holiday race is definitely our Thanksgiving Feaster Five. It’s an annual family tradition and we usually have a big group which is a lot of fun!

Reply

I love the pirate costume! Super cute!

Reply

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday to race on! I have been running the same race on Turkey Day for 12 years! My dad, sister, and husband run it with me and we have a blast :)

Reply

When I finished the IronGirl Triathlon last month, my hubby was there to watch me finish. I guess I finished a little earlier than expected because my family all ran up from different directions about 5 minutes after I finished. We still got a good photo all together :)

Reply

Your race day strategy looks spot on!

Best race finish was a polar bear plunge into a freezing cold lake and you had to dunk your head to get a finishing time :)

Reply

I haven’t raced on a holiday yet! Halloween would probably be the most fun. Best thing I ate all weekend was pumpkin spiced peanut butter.

Reply

I absolutely cannot wait to see how you do! It looks like your training has been flawless so far — you are going to ROCK this marathon, and I will live vicariously through you since I’m currently taking a respite from competition :p
My husband made apple pie with apples we picked that morning, so that was the best thing I’ve eaten… probably ever.
My best finish line… tie between a few. My first marathon was awesome because it was my first. My first BQ was great because it was so dramatic (I squeaked and gun time was a no-go, but net time was a BQ), first Boston because I had so many friends there, this past Boston because my Mom and Dad were there, first Ultra because I didn’t know if I could do it and I did, and first 100 miler because it was so unique — I beat my family to the finish, so I crossed, sat down with a bunch of strangers, and had mimosas and pretzels for an hour until my family arrived.
Let’s face it, though, they are all special!

Reply

I just ran my first race, an 8k, this weekend! I couldn’t believe how many hills there were. ;) My husband ran it with me and of course he beat me even though he hadn’t run but a mile in the past few months! He is now wondering how fast he could run if he started training! We both loved it and can’t wait to run another race! Thank you so much for your inspiring posts. I love reading about your runs and training plans!

Reply

LISA!!!! HUGE HUGE HUGE CONGRATS on your first race… and a hilly one too!!! So fun that you ran with your husband:) Keep me updated with how you are doing with your training and racing.

Reply

That is Holly and Stephanie in that (halloween race picture)… Ahhh, i missed out pacing with them this year. I too will be doing (http://aravaiparunning.com/network/javelinajundred/) a halloween race =).

Reply

I absolutely love Halloween races!! I’ll be doing a few local 5ks that are around Halloween time, I can’t wait! Ran a half on Sunday, so I’m resting up now. Taking a few days off from running after experiencing some annoying knee pain.
I’m excited to read about your race day…it’s so soon! You will do awesome!

Reply

Congrats on a great training week, Janae! I am cheering you on all the way from North Bay, ON:) It makes me so happy to see how excited you are and the fact that Brooke will be at the finish line is the cherry on top!
I had a great week of running last week. My best run was an 8km run with my boyfriend. Running with him > running alone!
The best thing I ate this weekend is a debate between a cup of froyo and a homemade pizza. Can I have a tie?
Last year I finished a race and my mom, sister and boyfriend were waiting with me with a big Iced Passiontea Lemonade from Starbucks. That was a great finish line!
I have done a Halloween race and a Thanksgiving race. I think I love Thanksgiving races more simply because I have a guaranteed amazing meal to look forward to the night after:)

Reply

Best thing I ate happened this morning. Red Velvet Pancakes at Cinnamon’s at the Ilikai Honolulu! It’s been months and they were juts as delicious as I remembered.

Reply

I didn’t really run this week! I need to do more, it’s just been wayyyy too hot. Excuses excuses.

acai bowls. all day, every day. I can’t get enough.

Leona Divide 50k. My first ultra, it was so so amazing to know not only did I do a 50k, but that I felt so well I could have done it a lot faster! Very cool to know :)

Thanksgiving. Because then I can stuff my face!!

Reply

My longest run was 10 miles. It felt good but I ended up getting blisters. I am actually having a really hard time with that. Regardless of what shoe or sock I wear, the blisters seem to come. So frustrating. I cant have thick socks since they make my feet too hot. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated Janae. :)

Reply

I got in a track workout last week that felt great. This weekend I made the glory that is the chocolate mug cake. 70 sec in the microwave and it’s done!

Love your shoes from the church picture!!! Where did you get them?

I was going to sign up for a masquerade race but the timing just didnt work out. i am doing a new year’s eve and day race for an awesome double medal im pretty excited about! Costumes are so much fun though, really makes the race go by so much faster when you are admiring other peoples costumes.

I’m just curious on the logistics of getting Brooke from one place to another when she visits dad. I think before you mentioned Brooke needs to take a flight? Do you take turns accompaning her each time? I have a friend just now going through a divorce and that’s been a major stressor.
