Tuesday TANGENTS and St. George Marathon training week #7!!

I hope your Tuesday is off to a great start!  I’ve got a few tangents for you today.

-Monday morning there was a recovery run and some core work on the schedule.  It is always crazy to me that whenever I am crazy sore for a few days after a hard run or race that my legs feel best when I am running compared to the rest of the day when I am not running.  Running really is the best medicine:)

-My mom invited us out to lunch and I had the cascabella salad at 180 Tacos.  Below Brooke is telling my sister all about her pre-school.  PS if you find me crying in a parking lot in a few weeks it is because all of the sudden Brooke is old enough to be hitting up school and away from me.  Yes, I have issues.

IMG 5932

-Round #6 of Megan’s bootcamp is starting up soon and I am stoked for her crazy awesome workouts.  If you are in the area you should definitely try it out!  Details are HERE

IMG 5942

-Speaking of Megan, she sent me this picture of us from three years ago.  PS it is really fun to be 9 months pregnant in 93 degree weather with no AC at your house.  I am pretty sure I lived in the pool that summer.

IMG 5854

-Brooke knows the proper way to eat cake—>  eat the top 1/3rd of it because the frosting to cake ratio is dead on that way.

IMG 5908

-My cute friend Amber transformed a pair of socks from Target (75 cents) into the perfect arm warmers for the race.  Brilliant.  She didn’t even have to feel bad about tossing them when she got too warm for them a few miles in.

-You can check out my current favorite core moves for runners HERE!

-I’ve been wearing my race shirt from this weekend’s race as much as possible.  Every now and then I score a really great/comfortable/one that actually fits race shirt and wear it daily until I get my next favorite t-shirt.

-I wonder why when Brooke has my phone she takes selfies of our feet?  Ps you are welcome for blurring out my toes in this picture… they were wrecked after all of the downhill running on Saturday.  Wrecked.

Natalie is looking gorgeous in her Hungry shirt at Lake Tahoe!

IMG 5855

-She really has a thing for hugging statues.

-And spending time with her this little man…

Those sock arm warmers. Genius.

Today I’m heading to the track for some mile repeats. It hurts just thinking about it.

Reply

YOU’VE GOT THIS MEGHAN!! You are going to rock those mile repeats!

Reply

I ran 3 miles this morning and I am going to do barre this afternoon.

Congrats on your PR!

Reply

8 miles with 4 MP in the middle – so tough with the humidity but it’s over! My feet are permanently trashed I think and should never be in pictures, so I relate :)

Reply

Today is my rest day so I will be taking it easy. I would probably choose an Italian restaurant if I had to eat it for the rest of my life. As far as the restaurant, can’t say that I have a specific one in mind.

Great training week! And your friends arm warmers are genius!

Reply

Tuesday Tangent: I’m getting froyo with a good friend tonight and really looking forward to it. Froyo and friendship are the perfect mix.

I think I would eat at Panera for the rest of my life. I could live with that.

I had a track ladder this morning, and it was a definite confidence-booster! Glad it’s out of the way, though. :)

Reply

What a beautiful preggo you were! :)

I typically only wear race shirts that are V-neck and women’s sizes. I get really excited when a race offers those.

Planning on a hot yoga class this evening… focusing on lengthening and strengthening my muscles before the better weather comes out and it’s time for running again! (aka october)

Congrats on that shiny new PR! BEAST.

Reply

Tangents: it’s my 1 year Blogiversary!
Restaurant: juice Bar
Workout: track time trial and I had a pr!!!

Reply

Congrats on the PR, Jen!

Reply

Thank you SO much!!!

Reply

No real tangents for me today except to say it’s my birthday! Last year in my 20s! Whoop!

I love your new marathon shirt, that is a really cute one. Isn’t it the best when races actually give shirts that you want to wear?! Especially when you can associate the shirt with a shiny new PR and being second overall female!

Reply

Hopefully fit my double run in today, 5 easy miles this am and 5 tempo miles tonight. I would TOTALLY eat at Cheesecake Factory forever….mainly because of their seven layer red velvet cake : )

Reply

That sock arm warmer idea is brilliant! I was thinking from your photos yesterday that her arm warmers were cute.
Today’s workout: 12 miles with 8 miles at goal marathon pace.

Reply

Today I have Yasso 800s– 1 mile warm up/cool down and 10×800 3:00!! Unfortunately have to do them on the treadmill since I left my Garmin back in NYC!

Reply

WAHOOO HAYLEY!! You’ve got this! Let me know how it goes. You are strong!

Reply

Congrats on the PR. I was away this weekend and didn’t read up until now. :)
My tangent is I can’t take one more minute of this 90 degree and 90 percent humidity weather but I will have to since the forecast doesn’t change much this week.

My other tangent is I tweaked my hamstring this weekend trying to do a cartwheel when I was playing with my boyfriends daughters. I’m now concerned about how much running I’ll miss for my marathon training but kids come first and they enjoyed my participation in their games. :)

Reply

Why is it that race shirts never fit right? My favorite restaurant is Portillos! My workout today is strength training…i have to take a couple of days off of running because my knee is suddenly inflamed!

Reply

I do the socks turned throw away arm warmers thing for every Ironman race since I’m always cold at the start of the bike. Here’s a useless tip though. If you put them on with the cut toes side up at the top of your arm the heel part hits right at your elbow. ;-)

Reply

I love that tip Mary! Thank you. Also… Iroman race… you are my hero!

Reply

I feel you on the pre school thing. My first is starting next month and I’m not sure what to do about it.

I’m solo running this week which is fine except I don’t know what runs I’m going to do yet now because I usually plan them around my running buddy. She’s just starting out with running so I take it easy on the mileage and speed. So this week is going to have to be long runs at least.

Reply

I actually noticed your friends arm socks in the race recap thinking they were awesome compression sleeves ha ha ha. Great idea that I must now try.

Workout today- 8 miles on stepmill then some weights. Rest day from running.

Have an awesome day!

Reply

congrats on your PR! i’ve got yoga on tap for today.

Reply

I’m training for NYC but today is a cross training day so I’ll be going to Total Barre then maybe a pump 30 min DVD at home.

We have this cafe with amazing fresh grown ingredients. They have the best quesadillas!!

Happy Tuesday!

Reply

I have no idea what’s on that salad but it looks amazing. I also really really really want a cupcake now. Your blog always makes me hungry!!

Reply

14 miles for today. Those arm sleeves are a totally awesome idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because I forgot to comment on this yesterday. From reading your race recap it sounds as though you’re like me and sometimes gu’s gatorade and fueling in general are just…ugh too much and leave you with gross belly…..enter Tailwind nutrition. I was introduced to this product by a friend who had used it as her SOLE nutrition for her 50 miler (yes SOLE nutrition) I have used it for numerous long runs and a half marathon and have ended everyone with a happy belly :) It’s worth a shot and yes you can thank me later :)

Congrats again on the PR and great week of training and racing!
I had a great 5 mile run this morning! It felt effortless ands my mind definitely needed it.
I would say Chipotle!

Reply

I love that race shirt!! Great week of training and great job getting that PR on Saturday!

Reply

If I could eat at one restaurant for the rest of my life I’d probably choose Marietta Diner. They have anything and everything you could possibly want on their menu. So whatever I was in the mood for that day, I guarantee they’d have it. Plus that have GIANT delicious cakes there! My workout this morning was 5 miles speed training – I felt great the whole time so it was an awesome way to start my day! Tuesday Tangent – Tuesday is my least favorite day of the week :)

Hi Janae! What are your plans for when Brooke goes to preschool? And then kindergarten is only a year later! I think it’s great that you’ve been home with her all this time.
I’m in a work out rut. I’m really into spin and yoga and got into the groove of going at least twice a week (combination of not liking to work out that much and there being only one instructor near me that I like) but I haven’t gone consistently in weeks.
My tuesday tangent? I feel so restless. I’m turning 26 soon and I feel like I need a change. I almost wish I didn’t have such a great job so I could consider leaving it and feel excited about something new. Why can’t I just have unlimited money and travel the world with my cats?

Reply

Luckily kindergarten is two years away:) When she is at preschool (it is only a couple of hours a week) I will run then instead of finding a babysitter. I agree, I lucked out big time to be able to be home with her all of the time! That is hard when there is only one instructor that you really like! Maybe you could come up with your own spin workout and use the gym bikes? Keep your eyes out for a new job and apply apply apply! You can do whatever you want:) I’ll keep my eyes open for any travel jobs that pays bank for you!

Reply

I think I’d choose the Whole Foods salad bar if I had only ONE place for the end of time. You know? Lots of variety there. Happy running, J! :)

Reply

love that shirt – what does it say?

Reply

TIMP:) For the Timp half marathon… it is backwards because I took a picture of it on my computer haha! Hope you are having a great day Nicole!

Reply

hahaha now I get it! hope you’re having a great day too!

Reply

Today’s run was 9 miles and thankfully it stopped crazy downpouring right before I went to head outside! I almost had an unplanned treadmill run on my hands :)

Reply

Just finished off four hilly miles. I’m running a pretty intense trail half next month, so I’m trying to run uphill as much as possible!

Reply

My big girl starts kindergarten next week, and my baby starts preschool right after. Waaaah!

Reply

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Reply

If I could only eat at one restaurant for the rest of my life, it’d have to be either Chipotle or this other awesome local burrito place called Fiesta. Yummm both are so delicious. Today I’m going to do some running speed work and hopefully also do some easy cycling on my trainer. :)

Reply

Congrats on the PR! That is amazing!!! You looked like a speeding bullet in all your pics!

Today’s workout: 6 sweaty miles already done! I might do some sweaty yoga tonight too!
As for the restaurant- that’s a really tough one. Probably Quality Seafood in Austin, TX. It’s the best seafood you can get this far inland and the owners and everyone who works there are just amazing!

Reply

I had a workout scheduled for this morning but I decided to sleep instead. I was up most of the night (the last time I look at the clock was 5:30). Now the plan is to do the workout after work.

Reply

I can’t believe Brooke is old enough for preschool!

Congrats on your PR! I loved reading your recap of the race. That speed is for 13.3 mi is not possible for me to comprehend.

If I could only eat at one restaurant: Jason’s Deli

Today’s workout: I’m trying to get my running fitness back, so lately I have just been running as far as possible and hoping it is farther than the day before. Is that bad?

Reply

If you had to choose only one restaurant that you could eat at for the rest of your life… what restaurant would you choose? The Old Pear in Boyana, Sofia, Bulgaria. Every time I go I order the same thing (stuffed peppers with yogurt, garlic flat bread, local red wine), but every time I try something of friends/family’s plates I love that too!

What is your workout for today? Rest! 5 tempo yesterday and 8 easy tomorrow. I am on Hal’s 3 day a week program.

Reply

Today was a swim and strength training day. Why is it that swimming always wears you out and you’re a hungry monster after? I swear swimming is similar to running in many ways.

Reply

I went to the track this morning (my first time doing a proper track workout) and did a ladder workout 400/800/1200/1600/1200/800/400 and I ran my first ever sub 7 minute mile! No idea how you kept up that pace for 13!!!

Reply

Brooke is getting SO big! She doesn’t look like a baby anymore.

Intervals this morning. I don’t have a track, so I run the neighborhood which means slightly less than perfect splits due to hills, but no one runs a marathon on a track, right? 3 x 400 / 3 x 800 / 1 x 400. Done!

Reply

I’m in Brooklyn for a couple of days, so I did my 4.5 miles to and in Prospect Park, but I also joined this early am outdoor circuit workout! It was so cool! It was tough but I feel great and we don’t have stuff like that where I live. So I was really excited.

Reply

Tangent- I’m going to six flags today!! skipping out of work early for a “sick” day (mental health day, it counts) and i am going to ride aaaalllll the rides. and then run 4 miles. yay 50 miler training!!

Reply

Janae, I know this is kiiind of creepy of me, but I was feeling really down in the dumps about my injury so I started going through your archives in hopes of finding some motivating words and I cannot thank you enough for writing this post http://www.hungryrunnergirl.com/2014/02/one-of-the-hardest-parts-about-being-injured.html

It’s totally 10000% how I’m feeling right now. It was really really taking an emotional toll on me this weekend but after I read that post I realized you were totally right and I have to just let it go. So thank you. Also I definitely ordered a hydro belt to start pool running :) I know I’ll still have moments of extreme sadness, but at least I’m headed in the right direction now.

Reply

I am so glad that post was able to help a bit. I’m so sorry about your injury right now and I hope you get better ASAP!! You’ve got this Annie. Keep me updated with your recovery!

Reply

If I could only eat at one restaurant for the rest of my life, it would probably be panera bread! I love their soups and hello look at all those pastries :D

I did yoga this morning and am really into the Blogilates videos on youtube right now!

Reply

Brooke is getting so big so fast!

Reply

Just started following your blog again… So glad I did. You are like an old friend…well not OLD lol. Also just started running seriously again… Missed it! Today is a rest day from running for me but I have a crazy workout planned for this evening that involves a lot of rowing, pull ups, dumb bell front squats, and burpees with 2 crazy, fit friends…wish me luck!

Reply

If I had to choose one restaurant to eat at for the rest of my life, I would chose a Mexican restaurant somewhere. Burritos for daysss.

Workout today is a trail run. FINALLY back to running. WEEEEEE!

Reply

Congrats again on your new PR ! :)
I am hoping for a sub 1:30 on my next half marathon this fall ! Ur 1:21 is amazing. Next stop for you is sub 1:20!

If I had to choose one restaurant it would be a place that serves the best guacamole in the world. Guac + chips = happy Emily.

Workout today was a speed and threshold combined. Happy its done!

Reply

Awesome training week!

And, I am TOTALLY with you on the whole comfy race shirt thing! I’d wear my WDW Marathon shirt to work everyday if I wasn’t worried my boss wouldn’t approve. ;)

And, I could eat at Firehouse Subs every single day!

Reply

I got a quick 3 mile run in which is great considering that running and I have been taking a little break.

Last Fri I ran a 5K with Kevin Hart!!

Reply

I can’t believe Brooke is old enough to go to pre-school! so crazy! I love your race shirt! It is super cute :)

Reply

I have used baby legs (the leg socks for babies) for arm warmers before. They work pretty good. Never thought about getting .75 socks to use. :)

Reply

Thanks so much for the shout out!!!! :)
Tuesday Tangents:
In 14 days I go back to the doctor and get the okay to start running again!!
This fall all 3 of my kiddos will be in school (3rd grade for my son and my girls start kinder and preschool!!) – I can’t think about it yet, it makes me kinda sad :(
Workout: power walk, bike, core work today!!
Have an awesome day!!!

Reply

Love the sock arm warmers!

Reply

I had plans for a HIIT + Core workout today but I might be changing my mind. It’s beautiful here today and the perfect temp for an evening run so I may have to switch it up a bit!

Reply

Tuesday Tangent: Today one of my choir campers at church (I’m the director – she is going into 2nd grade) got Christmas-excited for the snack my friend served: a freeze pop and cheese curls. It was so great.

Restaurant: John J Jeffries. Local organic food and super amazing cocktails. And a cheese tray that you can order at any hour, even if the kitchen says it’s closed.

Workout: Body Pump tonight, even though I so want to be lazy instead. Love this camp, but it’s super tiring!

Reply

I love getting comfy race shirts instead of tech t’s so that I can wear them around. I got one like that for my 4th of July race and wear it once a week!

Reply

I am an absolute mess about my daughter starting Kindergarten….like started crying at work today when someone asked me how I was!! MESS.
-Today was strength training.

Reply

I was supposed to do speed interval training tonight, but woke up with a really sore back. Hoping it’s not going to ruin my race in 5 weeks.. Hot bath and ibuprofen will hopefully help fix it… :(

Reply

Tangent Tuesday: Just found out that I got into the Big Sur Marathon! A good solid year from my last marathon. I can’t wait to do this race again!

Be warned. Pre-school=germs. I swear anytime my daughter brings anything home from school I get it 10x worse. Hand, mouth and foot…oy, I don’t think I would wish that on my worst enemy. I’ve had a cold for a week now. I know it’s going to turn into a sinus infection which means I can’t run b/c of the sinus pressure on my teeth. Really? a Cold in the summer just isn’t right!

Reply

Hmmm if I only had one restaurant to go to I would go to this Greek place we have in Raleigh because they have the most delicious EVERYTHING you can thing of! Delicious salads, delicious grape leaves, and even some bad-for-you baklava and fries!

Reply

You are the best. Seriously. Thelmaandlouise2.0 xoxoxo

Reply

This sock tip is absolutely genius!

Reply

Also, I love your core routine. I’ve been working more on my core for the past 3 weeks and I am starting to feel stronger during my runs.
