Tuesday TANGENTS and pre-run fuel ideas!!!

Pre-running fuel.  A tricky thing to perfect.

Eating the wrong things, too much or too little can really wreck havoc on your run.

There is usually a lot of trial and error that goes along with figuring out what foods help your body to perform it’s best.  We are just like cars and we need just the right amount of gas and the right type of gas in order to go full speed out on the roads.

I’ll share what I like to do personally along with some other ideas too!

IMG 5656

If my workout/run is in the mid-morning—>  I’ve been eating Kodiak Cakes protein pancakes with some syrup and a banana about 90-120 minutes before my run.  I do this because Brooke loves them too, they fill me up with some good carbs and protein and they give me the right amount of energy to keep me going on my runs of anywhere between 5 miles and 12 miles.

Early morning long runs—>  About thirty minutes before I start running I eat a white bagel with jam.  I am usually starting my long runs super early and I don’t want to wake up much earlier than 30 minutes before start time.  My stomach can handle eating pure carbohydrates right before my long run just fine.  If I was to eat a lot of protein or fats this close to a long run then my stomach would hate me.  If I am out of bread/bagels then I will eat a bowl of honey nut cheerios (light on the milk).   I’ll also do some gatorade and water on the drive to where I am starting my long run.

Early morning speed/tempo workouts—>  A piece of bread with jam, a few pieces of watermelon or berries and then out the door 30 minutes later.

Early morning less than an hour of easy running—>  nothing unless I wake up starving.  When I am doing an easy workout early in the morning then I don’t even bother eating anything because I have to force myself to eat super early.

I keep things super simple before I run but some people can handle a little bit more…

Here are some other ideas of things to eat before a run!

-A flour tortilla with turkey rolled up inside.

-Banana with pb/almond butter (nut butters used to work well with my stomach before my runs but not anymore).

-Yogurt with fruit and/or granola.

-Dates! I have a friend that eats a few of these before and/or during their run and they love them!

-Oatmeal with a banana and/or a tablespoon of pb/almond butter.

-2 waffles (trader joe’s frozen ones are bomb) with some syrup!

-Cottage cheese with berries or GRAPES!

-A Honey Stinger waffle ( I LOVE THESE).

-Toast with honey or peanut butter and jelly.

Also, HERE Is an awesome calorie calculator to help you figure out around how many calories you should be getting each day as a runner.  I love that it gives you a good number for your carb, protein and fat gram needs too.

Time for some Tangents!!!

-Brooke received a Yogurtland gift card for her birthday.  She felt like a rockstar when she was the one paying for our froyo.  I enjoyed her taking me out for a date too:)

IMG 6705

-I used to think I found my ‘true love hairspray’ until I found this one and I realized that we were meant to be together.  It’s the little things (and in my case the ridiculous things) that make us happy:)

IMG 6762

-Brooke takes the lighting of birthday candles very seriously.

IMG 3111

-Bagels and the pool.

IMG 6623

-I was analyzing my food (my coach has me record my daily eats once in a while) and I realized I was not getting enough protein.  I’ve been buying deli meat and eating this with some form of carb right after a run or a strength workout… delicious and easy.  I also need to get my iron back up.

IMG 6424

-I don’t think I will every buy a ‘nice’ sweatshirt again because I never wear them anyways.  For some reason I always choose to wear my Honey Nut Cheerios Bee sweatshirt.  Probably because it is so dang comfortable.

IMG 2990

-I’m really trying to make sure I am a good girlfriend.  I bought an emergency stash of sugar and chapstick to keep in his glove box.  I am an extremely ornery person when my blood sugar drops and/or my lips are dry/feeling like they could be chapped soon.

IMG 6494

-My sister gave Brooke sprinkles for her birthday and I think it was her favorite present.

IMG 3243

She added them to her birthday cake that already had enough sprinkles for a small country.

IMG 3264

-I think Megan really enjoys it when I send her my retainer pictures at midnight.

I had braces for four years and still wear my retainers!!

If it’s a morning run I usually don’t eat much (bad, I know) but for a race I like a bagel and pb.

My emergency stash includes gum, nuts, and carmex.

Reply

No braces for me.. I got very lucky! For pre run fuel I have two rules: something small and something simple. If I eat too much I feel sluggish but if I don’t eat enough I don’t have enough energy. I usually have something simple like an english muffin with peanut butter or a bowl of cereal and bring some Gu with me if it’s a long run.

I love protein shakes with almond milk and peanut butter. I don’t know the brand but Thomas and I usually buy whatever is on sale on bodybuilding.com. They have great prices on protein!

Reply

My go to pre run fuel is a bagel and biscoff, delish!

Reply

Well that just sounds amazing. I want that right now!

Reply

I usually do Wheat Thins and a banana as fuel. Works perfectly for me!

I love chicken for protein, but I don’t mind a nice steak, too. :)

I have to have Wheat Thins and my Nivea chapstick to keep me from being grouchy. They are my go-tos for sure!

Reply

I do a bagel with PB&J. That’s about the only thing my stomach can tolerate. If it is going to be an hour or less, I don’t eat anything. I’d rather get a few minutes of extra sleep!

Chapstick is necessary! I have a tube of chapstick in my purse and basically every room of my house. I keep a little tub of Carmex in the car because when it melts, it doesn’t get all over everything!

I love that your sister gave Brooke sprinkles for her birthday! My nephew is obsessed with catsup and we gave him several bottles for his birthday too!

I really want to work on my pre-workout fuel for my upcoming running season (i refuse to run much during the hot summer- ha!) When I lift weights, I stick with a protein shake during/after. But in the past with running, I usually just eat afterwards. I’m terrible at handling gus during a run, so pre-run fuel is on top of my priority list this go around!

I wear my Invisalign retainer to bed each night. Not only does it look marvelous, but I have the sexiest voice when I talk, too! ;)

Reply

No braces or retainers for me – I somehow lucked out with straight teeth. I always eat a banana before a run and add a handful of dry rice chex for long runs. I get my protein from lots of eggs, yogurt, fish, chicken, and nuts.

Reply

No braces or retainers.
Pre run fuel: coffee and a picky bar
Protein: nut butters and hummus
Emergency stash: kind bars!

Reply

Great tips, thanks! I’ve been having a few iffy runs lately (caused by iffy pre-run fuelling), so I’m definitely going to try some of these!

Reply

Haha I think we are the same person! I had braces forever, so I’ve been wearing my retainer to bed for about 10 years so I never have to get braces again!

This morning was a 7 mile beach run. It wasn’t my best pace but that’s probably because I ate a lot of fiber in my dinner last night. So my stomach wasn’t holding up too well! I don’t eat before I run early in the morning so I always make sure my dinner the night before is good for my run the next morning!

And if almond butter counts as protein…then that is my absolute favorite way to get it in :)

Reply

7 mile beach run—> sounds amazing!! Bummer about your stomach though. Yes, almond butter totally counts as protein:)

Reply

I had braces and still wear my retainers…at age 40! I got braces when I was in my 20s and paid for them myself, so I really feel obligated to keep these teeth straight :) Pre-run fuel: short run, nothing…long run, 2 Trader Joe’s blueberry waffles with syrup. Delicious and keeps you nice and full. Or sometimes I will do oatmeal with bananas.

Reply

Pre-run for me is avocado on toast. n fact, this is pretty much just breakfast every day. I struggle to run on an empty stomach, even just for five miles.

Reply

Pre-run fuel: 2 Ego frozen waffles with peanut butter and a tiny bit of syrup. I live by this. It’s soooo good. I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t have PB before a run, it’s so weird to me it upsets your stomach so much!

I used to be REALLY bad about protein too. Luckily when I started dating my boyfriend, he started cooking a lot of steak and beef for us. So I’m a lot better about it now. The other pre-run fuel trick I’ve learned is, before a super hot or super long run the night before put A LOT of salt in the water you use to boil pasta. By the time you put the sauce on it you can’t taste the difference anyway but I swear it makes a huge difference in my performance!

Emergency stash: pretzels, or my go-to snack before dinner if I’m home is just a string cheese. Juvenile, but oh so delicious!

Reply

Okay… your pre-run fuel is going to have to become my post-run fuel.. that sounds delicious! I’ll need to show your comment to my guy so that he starts cooking steak for us;) Hope you have a great day Annie!

Reply

How long are your easy workouts usually?

Reply

It is different every day:) My coach writes out my weekly plan!

Reply

I had braces for 4 and a half years! The worst of times but it was worth it:)
Pre run I usually have a banana and peanut butter for early/shorter runs and a white bagel with peanut butter and banana for longer runs (sometimes just half). I live by the banana!!
I like getting protein from egg whites in my oatmeal, quinoa and chick peas (including hummus).
My emergency stash always has chocolate. No exceptions:)

Reply

Favorite way to get in protein: Eggs! :)

Reply

Thanks to you, I’m now hooked on honey stingers waffles. I have a super sensitive stomach and usually can’t hold anything down, but those are perfect! A bit of fruit also usually helps (I think because they’re mostly water and sugar..perfect!)

I actually had braces twice..first time was for 3 years, then I got my wisdom teeth taken out and it shifted my teeth so I had to get them for another 2 years. I still have to wear retainers to bed because my teeth shift SO much! You would think when you’re 25 your body is done moving…

Reply

My favorite way to get protein is by making yummy chocolate protein desserts. Right now I’m on a kick of chopping up half a protein bar and mixing it into greek yogurt. Yum!

My emergency stash has chap stick and tic tacs. I can’t do the emergency stash of chocolate ’cause I’ll know it’s there and just eat it all.

Reply

I used to eat bagels before my long runs but they were too heavy in my stomach (I don’t have the patience to wait for them to digest..) Now I am experimenting with oatmeal. For shorter runs I like bananas or honey stinger waffles.

Reply

I got lucky and never needed braces or a retainer!
I usually don’t eat before a run less than 6 miles. Anything more and I stick with a plain bagel with jam. Lots of trial and error but this is what works!
My typical sources of protein are: eggs, chicken, fish and peanut/nut butter.
I keep almonds with me for when I need something!

Reply

I only drink coffee in the mornings before I run because I hate eating this early! Unless it’s a race, then I eat oatmeal. I did speed work after eating a filet o fish once and it wasn’t bad at all, surprisingly. I had braces for 3 years. UGH.

Reply

I wish I had kept up with my retainers. I was too cool at the time, and my teeth definitely shifted which is a huge bummer!

Reply

Good for you for still wearing your retainer. I had braces and a retainer and quit wearing it when I got married. My teeth moved, but not bad enough for me to get braces again. So I got another retainer that is made to help your teeth move back and stay there. You wear it all the time for at least a year and then at nights. Imagine the feeling of getting your braces tightened. It’s that, all the time. Don’t stop wearing your retainers!

Reply

I usually eat oats with an egg mixed in but seems like the trend is bagel and PB. Maybe I’ll try it.

Reply

World record (maybe)….5 different sets of braces (and jaw surgery). Last set was age 40-41. I’ll never not wear retainers at night again – as far as I am concerned.

Are guys not allowed to post here? Because I don’t think I ever see my comments.

Reply

…until now

Reply

SO weird that your comments weren’t showing up until now! I hope the problem is fixed. WOW… 5 different sets of braces AND jaw surgery. That is a ton!

Reply

I still wear my retainer at night, loud and proud :) I shared this on FB the other day, if you haven’t read it, it’s pretty good!
http://elitedaily.com/life/culture/retainer-keeps-sht-together/1128643/

I’ve been using My Fitness Pal lately to keep tabs on what I’m eating. I always hit or go over my protein goal. I love deli sliced turkey, eggs and egg whites, and Quest Bars, so I’m definitely good on the protein side! Now just to keep those carbs in check… ;) lol

Reply

I only eat before long runs (typically more than an hour long). It’s usually cereal!

Reply

I had braces for 3 years and got them off my sophomore year of high school. I now where my retainer every single night. I can’t sleep if I don’t have them in!

My typical pre-run fuel is a whole wheat bagel with a small amount of peanut butter.

My favorite way to get in my protein is grilled chicken, deli meat, occasionally steak, and protein bars, and salmon.

I keep jerky, cashews, hard candy, and gum in my emergency stash!

Reply

My pre-run fuel is always some oatmeal with banana and peanut butter. The amounts vary depending upon how early I am up, how hungry I am and how many miles I am running. I love Skoop B Strong as protein after I run. I was never a protein powder person but I just love it!

Reply

I never had braces, dentists said I didn’t need them. My current dentist thinks I should get them at 47. um, no.

I usually eat 2 pieces of gluten free toast or 1/2 a bagel with almond butter and 1/2 a banana or berries for long runs. Sometimes I’ll eat oatmeal. Shorter runs I have a small banana.

Protein can be tricky for me too. I love eggs so I keep some hard boiled ones on hand. And I love shrimp and fish so I pick up some cooked shrimp or Alaskan smoked salmon to throw on salads. Nuts, pumpkin and hemp seeds, quinoa and a clean protein powder help me get there. I’m just not a huge meat or dairy eater.

Reply

I NEVER know what to eat! This weekend my long run went way downhill because I just didn’t have enough food in me!

Reply

Love this. I’ve had the same issues. But I can’t eat PB before a run!

I had to really figure it out, I wrote some ideas here:

http://cuckoolemon.com/2014/08/21/dont-be-a-fuel-fool/

Reply

I like to mix up my protein sources, including nut butters/nuts, meat, dairy, and eggs. When I was pregnant my doctor wanted me eating protein every two hours so I had to get creative, and I got SO sick of sunflower seeds…but they are high in protein, so there you go, I guess.

Brooke’s little arm holding the gift card…SO CUTE. :-)

Reply

I agree that even after years of running, fueling is still really tricky, especially figuring out what will digest easily since it seem to change pretty often for me!

Reply

I love soft pretzels before a run. They never give me an issue. Pure carbs though.
I always have gum and a water bottle to keep me from getting ornery. That’s so funny that you have prepped his glove box!

Reply

I didn’t have braces but I think I might be getting them now. I’m “older” now though – not a teenager anymore and I’m having doubts about it. It would be more for correcting my bite so they said I’d have to do the traditional wire braces with elastics…I was really hoping I could do Invisalign but doesn’t seem to be the case. Anyone had experience with doing this when you’re in your thirties? Not sure I can handle it! But I’d sure like to have a more confident/comfortable smile (and bite).

Reply

I’m 33 and just got braces. Have a cross bite was told it will help my tmj and headaches I’m holding them too it. I’m rocking the pink color right now getting some sort of expander and elastic soon. I feel like a teenager it’s ridiculous but I’m hoping to have mine off before my oldest daughter has to have hers put on.

Reply

I’m 42 and just got braces for the second time. My current ortho said that everyone with a retainer should wear it for life! They told me to stop about 3 years after my first set of braces come off, thirty years ago. So wear your retainer every night! And don’t worry about getting braces even if you aren’t a teen, about half of my ortho’s clients are over 20.

Reply

Jenni..I turn 40 this year, and am in my 4th year with traditional wire braces (hopefully getting them off in the next few months, however!). It’s not been without challenges, but is worth it in the long run. I think I smile more with my braces now than I did the first 36 years of my life :).

Reply

Thanks for the replies guys!!! Much appreciated. I’m 34. I’ve always had a nice smile but have been self-conscious of it, seemingly crooked. My teeth are actually quite straight, the problem is my bite. It’s off and my grinding (despite a mouth guard) is wearing the teeth and enamel like crazy :( So the ortho and dentist are all recommending braces – but I’d have to get the traditional wire/elastics kind because the Invisalign wouldn’t correct the bite (more for straighter teeth). I’m really nervous about it – WERE YOU GUYS ABLE TO RUN WITH THE BRACES?! Hah! It’s my main concern – that it’ll be so uncomfortable and cut my mouth open. Also worried about looking like a teenager again when I’m trying to be professional in my job. Womp womp.

Reply

I cannot eat nut butters before a run anymore either. I don’t know how I ate toast with generous amounts of PB right before a run 10 years ago! It just sits in my stomach like a block now. I wish I could do the easy bagel thing! I worry do much about the simple carbs and how it affects blood sugars etc. I’ve read too much from Tim Noakes to be scared ;) Typical pre-run fuel is probably whatever meal I had a couple of hours earlier (I just need time to digest) or a homemade GF muffin or a small smoothie.

Reply

My favourite pre-run in the mornings is some dates! Just 6 can hold me over on runs up to 10 miles (haven’t ran any more than that yet). I used to have major stomach problems but every since I started eating dates instead of crackers or something, my stomach hasn’t bothered me once! :)

I have to wear a clear retainer for 20 hours a day, then after December I only have to wear it for 12 hours.

My favourite way to get in my protein are Beltsander brownies, Kashi cereal, and eggs. I’m a vegetarian and am almost fully recovered from severe anemia and I have to take iron supplements.

My secret stash usually includes some Kind bars. They taste too good to be healthy!

Reply

Some people never outgrow their sprinkle obsession. I am 27 years old and still as obsessed with rainbow sprinkles as I was as a child. I always get them on my ice cream and am trying to convince the fiance to let us has sprinkles on our wedding cake. MMMMMMM!

Before long runs, the only thing I eat is a piece of toast with peanut butter. And then a Honey Stinger waffle about 15 minutes before. I have a super sensitive stomach and get really bad cramping if I try anything else.

Reply

That retainer pic is the best! An odd woman on the plane asked me to pick up her retainer from the floor for her once… I just helped her by getting out of the way.

Reply

bahahah I am going to start asking random people to pick up my retainer.

Reply

LOL it makes me so happy to see another adult wearing a retainer. I wear my retainer on bottom and my mouthguard on top. I’m a super sexy sleeper.

Reply

Please make sure you get Brooke braces–if she needs them. My parents didn’t want to spend the money and now I’ve had major issues as an adult.

Protein–Hard boiled eggs, lox, and fish for dinner

To avoid being ornery–coffee, Altoid minis, fresh fruit

Reply

Fueling is tricky for me. My stomach cannot handle food before a workout. Now if it’s before a half marathon, I will definitely eat some melon and a granola bar. Otherwise I find my stomach is too sensitive to handle anything else.

As for braces, I wore them 5 years as a teenager. It was horrible and my teeth still are not straight. I am obsessed with other people’s straight teeth now and dream of mine being straight again. Maybe one day.

Reply

I had braces in grade 8-10. But my bottom retainer broke…and my teeth moved. At the time I didn’t think about it too much but now I really regret not getting a replacement!
For early morning runs I usually have a little coffee and a banana.
Protein- Love greek yogurt

Reply

I had a contraption that widened my upper jaw, braces, and retainers. I don’t wear my retainers anymore, but my teeth haven’t really moved much. I still have them though…for some reason.

I am bad about paying attention to my pre-run fuel except for my early long runs. For those it’s a cup of coffee, and an english muffin with peanut butter.

The boyfriend makes dinner most nights so there’s almost always some kind of meat there. I also like hard boiled eggs a lot.

I usually have a protein bar or candy in my purse to keep myself from getting too hangry. I’m super unpleasant when I’m hungry. My boyfriend offers me food whenever I’m randomly grumpy!

Reply

Smoothies are definitely my favorite for protein, but I really want to try the pancakes you mentioned!

Also, love the gift of sprinkles. I’ll have to remember that one :)

Reply

Oh those brace-face days! There are 3 kids in my family. I told my mom up front that I wanted them on first (middle child.) I had them for 2 yrs and got them off right before high school. Phew! I was pretty religious about wearing my retainer until I got out of college. I did go and get a new bottom retainer 2yrs ago. I really do need to put them back on!
I’ll eat a banana before a long run (+18mi) but otherwise nothing for anything shorter. However, if I’m doing a marathon I will have a bagel w/PB.
Protein-Hard boiled eggs, chicken or cheese are my go-tos.

Reply

I did have braces, but I have a permanent retainer on top and bottom so I don’t have to remember to wear mine. My teeth have moved a bit though, so it looks like braces round two :( I love chicken more than just about any other meat, so that is generally my choice of protein. I have chocolate on hand for when I’m a grouch haha

Reply

Lucky me, no braces! ?

I do not like to eat as soon as I wake up so if I can skip breakfast before my workout I do. But if I know it’s going to be an intense workout, I usually have some berries and a small banana with almond butter. And lots of water. I can not handle yogurt pre-workout. Makes me nauseous!!

I probably do not eat enough protein. I don’t love meat. Some but not a lot. I’d really prefer to only have it at dinner. I don’t like eggs or lunch meat. And I hate the taste of protein powders. But I usually force myself to have some at lunch. I usually sneak more in with some Greek yogurt.

I always keep 2 things in my purse. Chapstick and snacks for me and my daughter. Mine is usually a RX bar. Although she loves the chocolate sea salt one so lately I have to share it.

Reply

I have a herbalife milkshake 30 min before every run. Works for shorter/easier runs as well as the longer ones.
I love eggs so they are definitely my main protein source! Emergency stash is a chocolate bar or cereal bar, when my sugar levels drop and I get hungry I am the worst.

Reply

Yup I had braces TWICE!!! I still weat my retainer to bed every night and I am 36 years old!!

Reply

Totally had braces and a retainer. I still wear my retainer at night!!! :)
Long runs = banana and a piece of toast with almond butter (but I have to eat it well in advance, otherwise my stomach is not happy with me)
Protein = eggs, chicken, fish, almond and sunflower seed butter, cheese
Secret stash = popcorn and a piece of dark chocolate!

Reply

I think that Bee sweatshirt is too cute!!

Reply

I love cottage cheese with fruit. or nut butters. the new aloha protein powder is AMAZING! (they will send you a free trial!) Otherwise I enjoy lots of chicken, ground turkey & fish to get my protein!

Reply

I love Kodiak Protein Pancakes, too! My toddler also loves them. I made the mistake of putting m&ms in his this weekend, and it was a huge, sticky mess. Of course, he has asked me for m&m pancakes every day since :)

Reply

Shhhh…but I’ve had to wear braces 3x! First 2 during middle school and high school. Guess why?! I didn’t follow up with my retainers. Last time was about 4 years ago. And now, yes, I do use my retainers!!! lol…

Reply

On my last long run I ate bread with jam and that seemed to sit in my stomach well. I really want to try the Honey Stinger waffles. What is your favorite flavor?

Reply

I actually just had my braces put on at 28…I’ve found it surprising how hard it has been on my self esteem. I was so excited to get them, and I wasn’t expecting that at all.
I am terrible about post run fuel after my morning runs. I usually just wait until I get to work to eat, and by that time I am HANGRY!

Reply

I had braces. Unfortunately I got them the summer before I started at BYU Idaho. So there was the wonderful pleasure of being a college freshman with braces. But luckily I did not have them all 4 years. And my brother threw away my retainer and I never replaced it. Oops. :)

I can’t eat unless I have minimum of 90 min before my run, usually 2 hours is best. I do most of my running after work, but if I run in the am I skip eating before hand, except on race day.

For protein I love eggs, peanut butter and chocolate milk………..not all at the same time though!

And I keep crackers at work for when I get hungry.

Reply

Loved the post and all the great tips. Also loved part two with your personal updates. Totally still rock my retainer and enjoyed that you added that pic. I would not buy a new sweatshirt either. Cute!!

Reply

Beachbody just came out with a performance line that is amazing!! Enerize – before you work out, Hydrate – during, Recover – after (amazing stuff) and Recharge – take at bedtime.
It has helped with my running & recovery a ton!!

Ahaha that picture with the candle! LOVE Brooke’s concentration face. So great.

Thanks for the breakfast ideas, I’ve been running about 30 minutes after getting up lately and sometimes I’m so hungry I could puke. I haven’t found anything that works without giving me issue, so I’ll have to try some of yours.
I like nuts and nut butters for protein, oh and yogurt has been a big one lately. I try to stay away from deli meats because of all the additives.

Oh gosh, it would not be pretty if I tried to wear my retainer! It probably wouldn’t even fit in my mouth anymore :)

I am very lucky to have never had braces!

Today is my birthday and I am super jealous of Brooke’s sprinkled out birthday cake, I totally want some cake now at work haha!

I think I would try the ones you are sporting- the 3025 Aviators! I’ve never owned a pair, but have been interested in them for years!

Growing up, I had a horrible over-bite and ended up getting braces on my four front teeth. I had them for four years and had to wear a face brace every night. But, it took care of my over-bite and all the relentless teasing I endured because of it! Yay!
