My fastest yassos ever and taking it back to the high school days…

Looks like I’ve got my own physical therapist on my hands.  It works out nicely that I have someone to massage out my legs while I stretch after a tough workout.  She really worked on my calves today.

IMG 7463

I had an hour and a half to get my workout in (before I needed to be back to get Brooke up and going) and when I walked out the door to run my garmin was dead.  Why is remembering to charge our garmins such a hard thing (or maybe it is just me)?  I just brought my laptop and let it charge during the drive and for the 15 minute warm-up and luckily it got enough juice from that to last for the rest of the workout.

IMG 7458

I used my speedy friend’s advice this morning—>  I brought two pairs of shoes.  My normal ones (the PureCadence) for the warm-up and cool-down and my super old PureDrifts for the speed portion.  The PureDrifts are no longer made which is a hard topic for me to talk about without crying but I am trying to get every last mile out of them before retiring them.  They are a lot like the other shoes in the Pure line (that I love) but just way lighter and way more flexible…aka perfect for speed.  I kept my normal shoes ready to be switched into just in case my feet weren’t happy with the Drifts but they felt great the whole time and I think they really helped me to get some faster times today.

I also had my movie theater mug full of ice water there too because I knew it was going to get hot (for me, I am a wuss when it comes to the heat) for the last few intervals.

IMG 7461

Here is how the workout went:

15 minute warm-up (garmin was charging and so I am guessing it was about 1.6 miles at like an 8:45ish pace)

10 x .5 mile repeats (2:43, 2:50, 2:49, 2:48, 2:49, 2:49, 2:48, 2:50, 2:48, 2:47——>  2:48 average).

2:50 recovery jogs in between each interval (I really slow down for these… I take probably too much advantage of the recoveries)

15 minute cool-down (8:35 pace)

11 miles total and some very tired legs.

My cadence is a heck of a lot better for the speed intervals compared to my recoveries.

It was just one of those on-running days.  I wanted to nail the workout mentally, it was gorgeous outside and I slept A TON this last weekend.  I definitely was pushing myself and hurting especially for the last 4 but overall I felt pretty good.

IMG 7460

I took it back to my high school days and listened to my five favorite songs from back in the day.  Raise Up, Always, Feeling This, Every Time I Look for You and Ride Wit Me.  Took me back;)

IMG 7479

PS during my workout I thought about this little bookmark that Brooke found at my mom’s house the other day.  Simple and perfect.

IMG 7474

The best part about going straight to my parents’ house after a workout.  Peaches straight from the heavens.

IMG 7476

In other exciting news—>  I think the potty training thing is finally happening.  We are 1.5 days with 100% accuracy currently.  Chocolate chips and the promise of gymnastics lessons are quite motivating for the Brookers.

How nice that you have your own personal massage therapist! Hopefully she never grows out of that habit. Great job on your yassos!! I bet you are tired…

Today is hopefully not an off day… I’ve been out with an IT band injury for two weeks so I’m hoping to have a good run back today!

Reply

IT band issues are painful. I hope today feels great for you Maddie!

I love the pure connects for speed!!!!!

Reply

Those are definite winners in my book too!

Reply

I heard a rumor that they will discontinue the Pure Connects next year. Any idea if this is true?

Reply

I will cry if that is true. They haven’t told me anything but I will ask…

Having a mini therapist is awesome! I could use one for my calves right now. For my running shoes, I actually rotate them across different styles/brands to keep my arches and heals happy.

As far as high school songs, Nirvana and Dave Matthews is what reminds me of those days. They just came out with their big hits then.

Reply

Oh Dave Matthews… I still listen to him multiple times a week. His voice. Yeah.

Reply

Dashboard Confessional definitely takes me back to high school. Oh, and Avril Lavigne for sure! I loved me some Blink-182, also!

I usually wear my Kinvaras for every workout. I probably should have some racers for faster stuff, but I don’t.

Nice workout! Today was my rest day, but I have repeat 1000s tomorrow. EEEKK!!

Reply

OH YES… Dashboard for sure. I always thought their songs were made for me back in high school;) GO ROCK YOUR 1000s… you’ve got this!

Reply

Potty training will happen! If you can train her to massage your calves surely she can use the potty ;) We’re going peach picking later this week and hopefully will have a big drawer full of them like that.

Reply

Great run!! Today was a rest day for me – So I guess my running is off today? Or I could say my training is on since I’m following the plan to rest :) I can rest like boss!

NSYNC reminds me of high school! I Still have some NSYNC songs on my playlist :)

Reply

Great job on those Yassos! I bet the calf massage felt really great after that hard work.
I currently wear my Pure Flows for every workout but want to add a pair of Pure Connects to my rotation for speed work and racing.

Reply

We also just potty trained and the thing that worked really well for my 3 yr old was painting one toenail for everytime we made a potty in the potty. Worked almost instantly because it was such a visual reminder. Just thought I’d pass that on if you need some more rewards ? thank you Pinterest!

Reply

Okay. THAT IS BRILLIANT. We are totally going to copy you. Thank you Kristin for the tip!

Reply

You are so cute with your throwback playlist! Mine would totally have some Spice Girls, N’SYNC, Limp Bizkit, Shinedown, and Nickelback.

Some of those I can still listen to today; some not… ;)

potty training: it took me forever with my first! The bribes, stickers, treats, and big girl panties are a huge help. No pull ups, they are too much like diapers.

I listened to a lot of the Killers and Tristan Prettyman in high school. And a lot of other random things.

Reply

Yep.. you are so right about the pull ups. I need to get some stickers! OHHHH the Killers. Definitely remind me of high school and college too! Hope you are having an awesome Monday Jenny!

Reply

-Blink 182, Nelly, & Britney Spears :)
-I’ve been known to spoon feed ice cream to my daughter on the potty, so bribery all the way!!
-I wear different shoes when I cross train, pearl izumi’s and ON cloudrunners when I run.
-Today was a rest day :)

Reply

Spoon feed ice cream—> brilliant. Brooke will totally go for that! Thanks Melissa.

Reply

Worked every time :) Good luck!!

Reply

This is gonna date me in a hot hurry but the Cranberries, Nirvana, Live, Green Day, Offpsring, I could go on and on! Maybe even a little Warren G ;)

Reply

Lightning Crashes. Yes please… pretty sure I listened to that Live song on repeat for a year straight.

Reply

I went to their concert! I went to so many concerts in my teens but Live was my absolute favourite.

Reply

Hey I love the pure drifts!!!!! by far my favorite shoe ever made :-)
I saw that they were not going to continue making them and so I bought 4 pair and I am using them slowly : ) so glad to see someone else loves them as much as me!!
P.S. You can still find them on amazon I believe.

Reply

You are brilliant to get 4 pairs before they stopped making them. Brilliant… I will be checking out amazon now! Thanks AMY!

The little girl I nanny for is 3 and LOVES walking on my back when I’ve had a tough workout the day before. She calls is the “balance beam” game haha. Feels great for me too!!
She was just starting her potty training when I started at the beginning of the summer and M&Ms, nail polish and stickers work best for her!

Reply

Amazon Prime has a Playlist of one hit wonders and it reminds me of my younger days! P.S. I’m jealous of those peaches.

Congrats on your Yassos!!
High school: Dave Matthews Band and Jewel
Saycony kinvara for track. Brooks launch 2 for long runs.

I listen to the 90’s station on Pandora when I run to get a good mix of music from my high school days (class of 96 :))..I am always rotating shoes and sometimes bring an extra pair when I am running long on the treadmill in the winter just in case my pick for that day isn’t working for me.

We just ditched the diapers this weekend! My daughter isn’t quite 26mo but I was so over diapers. I think she was ready too. I was about to give up after the 1st 3hrs but after her nap she got the hang of it. Stickers, mini-M&Ms work wonders. To keep her going I dangled a carrot in front of her. 1st it was a frozen necklace after so many stickers. Now that she’s got the hang of it I put out the prize of all prizes. a 7 Princess barbie collection. She is pumped! 1st day in undies at daycare. God bless those teachers! I pick her up in an hour. Fingers crossed she did awesome.

Good luck with Brooke!

I am not looking forward to potty training! But I’m excited to know chocolate chips and gymnastic lessons can help with that! haha

You are an animal. Those 11 miles make me want to cry for you. But i’m so proud. You are insane.

I’m secure enough in my manhood to say….why doesn’t Brooks make Men’s PureCadence in that purple and blue?

I wear Asics GT-2170s for speed and races, but they won’t last too much longer and I will be sad like you are when you retire the Drifts. Because Asics doesn’t make them anymore either. I wear Hoka One One Bondi 3s that I got recently (last years model = cheap) for recovery runs, and I wear North Face Ultra Cardiacs for trail runs. I have a 4th pair for the dreadmill but those New Balance shoes aren’t worth mentioning. Those shoes have never seen pavement, which is why they go on the basement dreadmill. Keeps the ‘mill and the carpet clean.

About to start potty training with baby number 2. First one was a month away from 3 when she just said, I’m done with this. We packed diapers for a post-deployment trip to DisneyWorld. She used…not a single one.

Today was a recovery run from the Ten Miler – which I killed – on Sat. Yes, I was supposed to do that yesterday…but that didn’t happen.

Reply

BTW I also bought 3 pair of GT-2170s at the same time. It’s taken a long time to wear through them.

Reply

I will tell them that they need to make the purple and blue PureCadence for the men too. They are a good looking shoe. CONGRATS on the ten miler that you rocked!

Adding you to the list of ‘Bring Back the Drifts’ club.

Reply

I’m going to have to say Jack Johnson brings me back the most to my high school days! Banana Pancakes err’day on my way to school :)

Way to kill that speed work! I was on the road 10+ hours today returning from a mini-vacation and all I want to do is RUN these legs! ha

Reply

Today was a stationary bike day. I have a tibial stress reaction…not yet a stress fracture, but still ordered to stay off my leg…right in the middle of marathon training. :( I love the Petey Pablo and Nelly song!! Totally going on my next long run playlist! Yay for Brooke! She is growing up so fast:)

Reply

Awesome job on those 800s! That workout predicts a very speedy marathon time:) Can’t wait to see how it goes for you on race day! I wish I had someone to massage my calves like that while I was stretching after a run!

Congrats on the yasso’s!!!

Potty Trainig Tips (this is what worked for my son)
1. If he had a diaper or pull up on he’d use it so I used underwear as much as possible.
2. When leaving the house I had my son wear underwear then put a pull up OVER the underwear. This way he felt the cotton of the underwear instead of the diaper-like material and he held it every.single.time.
3. After following #2 for a few weeks I got brave and just had my son in underwear. Every time we stopped in a store we used the potty then I had him
Use it before gettin back into the car. No accidents!
4. Always keep a spare of underwear, shorts, and wipes in the car. I’m over diaper bags so I keep both our cars stocked just in case.
5. A good potty routine morning, night, before and after naps etc really helps too but I figured u were already doing this :-)
6. My husband and I were very patient with this process and had our son kinda lead the way. When they’re ready they’re ready :-)
Good luck!!

Okay. These are just what I needed. Thank you so much! I really needed #2 and #4. You are the best. Give me some of the patience part too;)

The band yellowcard reminds me of my HS days.

Awesome job on the workout today! woo woo!

Reply

AHHHHH YES to Yellowcard:) I went to that concert! Thanks Tedi and I hope you had a great Monday!

Reply

Holy dude you killed that workout. I’m so excited to see you kill your marathon!

I am also in mourning for the PureDrifts! They are my all-time favorites. I bought a couple of extra pairs to hoard when I first found out they were discontinued, but I’m not sure what I will do when my last pair wears out. Have you found any other shoes that are comparable? I have tried on many but haven’t found anything that even comes close! :(

Reply

I actually haven’t found any that are comparable yet. It makes me super sad because the Drifts are perfection. Let’s keep each other updated if we find any comparable shoes!

Reply

i was a late 80’s early 90’s high schooler. I listened to Erasure and Depeche Mode, Metallica, Bon Jovi and all the hair bands and grunge bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Collective Soul

Today was my long run since i was traveling home from Jamaica yesterday. I ran 12 miles.

BLINK 182 FOREVER!!!
also, dixie chicks, britney spears, and eminem.
aaaah such good music!

Reply

I have a silly cadence question that maybe someone could explain to me…. I’ve read that a cadence of 180 is the ideal, regardless of your pace. But that doesn’t make sense to me. Wouldn’t a faster cadence (mine right now is between 160-172) equal a faster pace?? Did I misunderstand what they were saying?

PS looks like you are totally on track for that sub 3!! I’m getting excited for you! Keep it up! :)

Reply

Not a stupid question at all!!! So the goal is for your foot to land directly underneath your body (the best way to land for your joints). The stride length is the only thing that is supposed to change according to your speed. So you continue to land underneath your body no matter what speed you are going. When you are running slower you are taking shorter strides and when you are going faster you are taking longer strides. Does that make sense? That is how I understand it!

Reply

I go back to high school with any NSYNC or BSB songs! And try a sticker chart for potty training…………one sticker for each time she uses it, and when the chart fills up she gets to pick a new toy or something.
And I tried the Pure Drifts and LOVED them. Like LOVED them. I had the orange ones that turned my socks orange if I wore them in the rain. I wore them until there were holes in the soles. I am beyond sad they don’t make them anymore. They fit my feet perfectly bc my right foot is wide at the toe box and they fit it perfectly. Sad day when I found out I could not get them anymore.

Reply

Way to go Brookers! I would be pretty darn motivated by those two things as well ;)

Reply

That was an awesome workout! You’re flying girl way to go! I too train early because of kiddies, how early would you do a speed workout? How do you get your legs working, I find my real early runs a super struggle to move with any speed?

Today will definitely be an off day as I cycled 50m yesterday training for a ride from London to Paris

High school = hair bands and old songs from the 50’s and 60’s. ( I went to a lot of classic car nights at this local diner.)

Potty training tips…. I went completely child lead. (Which was hard with daycares that wanted to push it a bit.) We got a potty and put it in the bathroom and said she could use it if she wanted to. Then I waited ’til she asked for big girl panties like her friend had and played it super cool. “Hmm, I don’t know… I guess if you really want to try going on the potty we can give it a shot.” She was pretty much set in about a week.

I wear Mizuno’s to run and New Balance to lift.

Anything New Kids on the Block reminds me of high school. I’m curious since we live in different parts of the country – when you say it’s hot, what’s the temp & do y’all have humidity?

Potty training. Wow … can’t wait to go through that again! lol!!
With my first I did a potty training boot camp type weekend. We spend 3 days staying home so we could knock it out of the park … and it worked!
I read potty related books to him for weeks leading up to this event and rented the potty training kit from the library (total waste for my son but it came with a doll & a potty that your daughter might like). Our favorite books were “Everyone Poops” and “The Potty Train”.
So back to the weekend – I had my son running around totally naked from the waist down on the first half of the first day and set a timer for 15 minutes and the second half the timer was set for 30-60 minutes. Every time it went off, we ran to the toilet (Baby Bjorn brand) and sang a song. If he used the toilet he got 1 M&M for peeing and 2 for pooping and A LOT OF PRAISE. I had him wearing underwear all day and pull ups at nap and night time. The second day I got rid of the time but asked every 30 minutes if he had to go and had him sit on the potty every 60-90 minutes. the third day I relaxed a little bit but still consistently asked him if he had to go. I also gave him a lot of water on those 3 days :)
He was mostly potty trained after those 3 days with occasional accidents here and there and he was totally out of pull ups within 3 months.

The PureDrifts are my absolute favorite running shoes, especially for marathons!! A few months ago I spent probably 3 weeks searching online and finally found some random site that still sold them! Sadly I should’ve gotten 2 pairs b/c I know next time I wont be so lucky :( I’m glad I’m not the only one who is a little upset about this.

Btw I really look forward to reading about you and the beautiful Brookers everyday! You are very inspiring and motivating and I hope some day I can have a daughter as awesome as Brook is!!

When my kids were little we had a “Surprise” bucket (plastic bucket left over from Halloween). They could choose something from the bucket as a reward when they were good (or when they used the potty) It had little trinkets, stickers, bite size candies etc…it worked like a charm for potty training.

Reply

Good luck with the potty training!

This maybe a stupid question, but how did you measure your cadence? Is it a feature on your watch?

I’m coming back from a femoral neck stress fx. For part of my recovery, once I was approved to return to running, my doctor had me do a gait analysis. I came in at a 178 cadence, but she noticed over striding. My doctor wants me to eventually increase to a 186, and I’ve just been using a metronome app. I hate running with headphones though and would love to just use a watch or pedometer.

Thanks!!!
