It isn’t easy. Robot Runners. Rather Fond.

I am thinking we are attempting to do the robot or something in this picture but I can’t quite remember.

I’ve been trying to get my body used to waking up early again but it isn’t easy.  This morning when my alarm clock went off I questioned everything about my decision to run early.  The three things that got me up out of bed—>  I wanted to beat the heat, I had my favorite running girls to meet which meant I knew it was going to be fun and I did NOT want to run on the treadmill.

It will just take a few more weeks for my body to adjust to waking up early again (and going to bed at a decent hour) but until then that alarm clock is just not going to feel super great.  Well, it will never feel super great to get up early but it will feel a lot better than it does now.

My favorite thing about my Garmin 620 is that it tells me what my cadence (steps per minute) is for each run.  Today I did 6 miles on the roads and I averaged 172 (my goal is 180) spm and then I did 4 miles on hilly trails and averaged 162.  I think when I am trail running I am much more focused on keeping my ankles sprained-free and making it to the top of the hills—> my form/cadence suffers because of that.  Something to work on.

10 miles and home by the time Brooke was awake.  I love when I can get in a run when she doesn’t even know I am gone (we slept at my parents’ house).

Just a few more pics from Park City yesterday:

Brooke was rather fond of this bear.

IMG 1829

The little ones wanted pizza for lunch and that is what we gave them.

IMG 1826

Simple cheese pizza.  It hit the spot.

IMG 1823

Eating outside while watching the trolley go by.  Kind of the best.

IMG 1824

Come to Park City at some point in your life please.

IMG 1830

Okay, just two more things to tell you about.

1.  I tried the Cookie Butter cookies from TJ’s.  My thoughts—>  delicious.  They are super sweet and two was all I needed to be completely satisfied.  Definitely a must-try if you have a sweet tooth.

IMG 2483

 2.  Now I need to know your opinion on the Tonight Dough.  Who has had it?  Is it worth it or should I just stick to my favorite (Phish Food).

IMG 2480

Favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor?

Do you prefer simple pizza or lots of toppings?

Where was your run today?  Roads?  Trails?  Treadmill?  Rest day?

Anyone else trying to get into early morning workouts again?

-The struggle is real.

The struggle is definitely real. I always question my decision to run early when the alarm goes off, but I’m always glad when it is done!

Tonight Dough = winner. I thought it was delicious.

I generally go for a pretty simple pizza. Though sometimes when we make pizza at home we basically throw all the veggies in the fridge on it and that’s always tasty too! I guess the point here is that I’m not picky :)

Reply

Yes to trying to get back into morning workouts! It’s hard knowing that the gym will still be there later in the day too, but my day always goes better when I’ve had a sweat sesh.

It doesn’t matter if the pizza is cheese only, has all the toppings, is circle or square. Just give me pizza.

Ps a watch that measures cadence?! Amazin’!

Reply

It is definitely tough to get my morning workouts in. Even though I’m on summer break I’ve been really tired!

I love pizza with loads of toppings. The more the merrier!

Reply

Lots of veggies on my pizza… and more than one kind of cheese haha. I ran on the pavement this morning… 3 easy miles but 10 hours after spin and at 5:30am they didn’t feel so easy!! :P

Reply

The tonight dough is good, I’ve had it. Phish food, chubby hubby and speculous core are my other favorites mmmmmm

Reply

Morning workouts are super hard for me! Lately I have been waiting until after I have taken my husband to school and my daughter has woken up, but oh man does that make it so much harder to get it done! I just need to be tough and get my butt up early ha!

Reply

My #1 summer morning run motivation is ALWAYS beating the heat!

Cute bear pics! My hometown college’s mascot is a bear, and the campus has two statues – one is a beastly thing that’s roaring, and one looks like he’s yawning and scratching his stomach. Not sure of the personality they’re trying to get across…

Phish Food is definitely the best B&J’s flavor EVER. I once tried Chunky Monkey and loved it for the first two bites… then it was just toooooo much banana.

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL!!! That is me exactly! I can’t get up and run or workout at all to save my life these last three weeks. Before that, 4:45AM was just the norm, and I could always make it happen. I’m glad that I’m not alone! You conquered it today though, I hit snooze and went back to sleep! It’s way too hot to run after work so I’ve had all treadmill time lately. I’m not training for anything, so that doesn’t help the motivation issue either.

I really need a TJs trip soon, I would love those cookies!

Reply

I live in Florida so I have to run early. I wake up at 5 am for my long runs, but I’m used to it. I’m excited to run the Chicago Marathon this fall, but I’m not excited to train for a marathon during the summer…

Best Ben and Jerry’s – Boston Cream Pie

Reply

Every time that I complain about training in the Utah heat for my fall marathon I will think about you and how tough you are… way to go girl!

Reply

The struggle is soooo very real.

When I can finally run again I want to do trails. I think it will help keep me injury free.

You need the tonight dough. Perhaps I will get it so you can try it too. I will just become your supplier.

Allthetoppings.

Phish food used to be my fave too… Until I tried tonight dough. It is literally the best ice cream on the planet. It is crack ice cream!!!! I always have my fridge stocked with it now. It’s a must try!!!!!!!!!

Reply

According to your exclamation points… I must try it asap. Thank you and I am so glad that you are always stocked with the good stuff!

Reply

one more ! bc it’s that good! do it.

Ugh. Been trying to get back to morning workouts but work has been slow so I don’t HAVE to do it in the AM, so I always just opt to sleep till 7. But as soon as work picks up again I’ll have to adjust to AM workouts if I want to get them in, so I might as well get back to it… but those early alarms are just so painful at first!!

Simple pizza for “regular” pizza, interesting toppings for thin crust.

Reply

Cookie dough every single time. Tonight dough = heaven. Try it!

Reply

When I run in the morning, it feels like I’m dragging a dead body around town. Or like I’m pulling a volkswagon behind me with a rope around my waist. I HATE IT. But, I do it because sometimes the early morning is all I’ve got.

Reply

It was a rest day for me. I did trails/hills yesterday though and it was beautiful.

I love Heath bar ice cream and cookie dough ice cream. And my favorite toppings for pizza are pepperoni and sausage. But combos are really delicious too.

Reply

I loved Park City when I visited Utah!
Today’s run was 6 easy miles on my new favorite paved trail along a nearby river. Running by water is my favorite!
I like my pizza with cheese and some vegetables, although every once and while I go overboard and add bacon and all sorts of extras to it.

Reply

So, I’ve had the Tonight ice cream. My thoughts are that it was good, but I enjoy Half Baked more.

Park City looks AMAZING!

PS I’m totally having ice cream tonight….just like every other night this week. :)

Reply

Cheese pizza is like my staple. Instead of getting a veggie one a lot of times I just get a cheese one. I like to keep things simple. :) or I’ll put my own veggies on it,
That icecream looks good.!! I might just have to try it.
and that’s why I love morning runs, because I don’t have to miss any time with my daughter, just get it done and back before she even wakes up :)

Reply

I’m a die hard Cherry Garcia fan but I’m loving the new Hazelnut/Chocolate with the hazelnut fudge core.

I find I do better when I run my long runs early. Shorter runs I like later in the day to clear my head.

I put so many veggies on my pizza it’s kind of ridiculous.

I took a Bikram Yoga class today. It was tough to get back into it but it’s a pretty good complement to running. The discipline, the breath work and the crazy amount of sweat…

I agree with Brooke, I would sit with the bear too. They’re my fave, I collect them.

Park City looks like the cutest place.

Struggle is real every morning, but I am honestly more tires during the day when I dont work out.

The Tonight Dough was just alright, I would much rather have the Salted Caramel to the Core one

You need to try the Ben & Jerry’s that has the TJ Cookie Butter in the middle of the ice cream. Seriously. TRY IT. Let your life change.

I like traditional pizza toppings, but I also like to try some new things that you wouldn’t originally think would go on a pizza.

I had an easy run on the roads today but really want to hit the trails soon. It’s been WAY too long.

I have always been a morning person, but now that the school year is over (I was a teacher), there is definitely a struggle to wake up early again. I feel your pain.

Love the pics, and Park City looks beautiful! I definitely need to visit there someday.

Reply

I use my mornings for writing, but DANG is that ever getting hard to do as well!

I vote for late sleeping.

Reply

My life would be much easier if I got up earlier to run. Fact.

Reply

Yes – you are crazy if you don’t try it. Dare I say it – way better than Phish Food.

Reply

Love everything Cookie Butter from Trader Joe’s! They hit that nail on the head!

At Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked rocks my world and their new Core flavors aren’t shabby either!

Reply

I loved Tonight Dough when I tried it at Ben & Jerry’s. So good!

Reply

No ice cream or pizza for me — I’m lactose intolerant. Ugh. I love waking up early. If I had to run later in the day I would have such a struggle. Today was speed work on my bike. Running tomorrow (in the rain if the weather forecast is correct).

Reply

I love a good supreme pizza or something like that. I don’t typically choose an all cheese pizza option at all. The tonight dough ice cream sounds delicious!!

Reply

I’ve been trying to do my workouts during my 4 month old’s first morning nap. She usually cat naps for about 45 minutes, so it’s the perfect amount of time to do a living room workout! When I can find the motivation to go through with it ;) Today was a win!

Reply

I know you love cookies and ice cream as much as I do – try this flavor (combines both of those!): http://www.benjerry.com/flavors/spectacular-speculoos-ice-cream

My favorite Ben & Jerry’s is Phish Food frozen yogurt. I like the Tonight Dough, but it was a bit too sweet. Weird, I know.

I also have been getting up early for the past three weeks and it is hard. I’m a terrible sleeper, so now I am tired all.the.time.

I did 6.5 fast miles on the treadmill this morning. Sick kid means running before the husband leaves for work.

I love plain cheese pizza or a white pizza with tomatoes. Yum!

Reply

Totally get on that Ben & Jerry’s Tonight Dough!! I tried it for the first time a few weeks ago and it was AMAZING!

Reply

Favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor is probably Half Baked, but I love the Peanut Butter Core one as well! I have tried the Tonight Dough and it is FAB but super sweet.

Pizza–ALL the veggies on thin crust. Yum.

I just went on vacation so I’m majorly struggling to wake up early again to hit the gym but I did manage 40 minutes on the elliptical today.

Reply

Now that seminary is over for the year I’ve been waking up to beat the heat and go running with my friends. For some reason it was easier to get up to teach seminary than to go running, and I love running!!

I need to get out on trails more! They are so fun, but sometimes it seems so much easier to run the boring routes I’ve done a million times that start and end at my front door.

Reply

When my alarm goes off at 420a I always question why I do this to myself? Thankfully I have have die hard friends that are willing to run at 5a. This morning was a soggy 6mi run in the rain. It never let up but we loved every moment of it.

I could eat pizza every day. broccoli on pizza- the Best!

Reply

THE TONIGHT DOUGH. Oh my gosh. I wasn’t going to comment but then I saw that Phish Food was your favorite. Phish food is also my favorite and I tried Tonight Dough and was in heaven! Even my husband who is an all vanilla type of guy loved it, he actually ate the whole thing before I knew it. Pfft.

Also if you haven’t tried Karamel Sutra (the caramel core one) you need to now!

Reply

Today I did a strength workout at the gym. I am just naturally a morning person so waking up to work out is not really a problem for me…I would rather wake up to go running than wake up to go straight to work so that’s what I tell myself if I’m tired:)

Reply

The Tonight Dough IS AMAZING!!!!! Also the limited edition peanut butter half baked is to die for. Have you tried any of the cookie cores? They are so difficult to find in my area I haven’t been able to get my hands on one of them!!

Also that pizza looks amazing. Park City looks beautiful I have heard great things but have never been.

Tonight Dough- Not too bad. What intrigued me was the cookie dough part but I didn’t realize peanut butter was involved. lol. I do like soy nut butter on my toast but that’s as far as pb and I go!! It wasn’t awful but I am a die hard for American Dream!

NY Super Fudge Chunk! and Vanilla….Two faves.

ALL pizza. It is my desert island food. Strawberries are a close second.

I ran in Freeport, ME. Mostly on the road.

No AM runs…only if it’s for a race. Really NOT a AM person. I run between 2-4PM usually…but I don’t have kids and my job encourages fitness, so I have lots of flexibility.

I am on the exact same early morning struggle bus right now. For years I woke up at 5 to run, but recently, have been pushing that back to 5:55. Its time for me to switch back to 5am, (hello summer in the south!) and while some days are good… some not so much.
Favorite Ben & Jerry’s… ummm Menchies please :)

YES–GET The Tonight Dough! Also I know Walmart is the devil, but they currently have a flavor called “Roasted and Toasted”.. if you like s’mores, then you MUST GET IT NOW.

The tonight dough is SO good but try to find the peanut butter cookie dough flavor! I thought it best the tonight dough! My run was 6 miles on the trail today dodging horse droppings haha! It’s like I’m on America ninja warrior!

You absolutely need to try The Tonight Dough. Best thing B&J have ever done, and I’m an expert!

I am all about a simple pizza. Mushrooms are the only things I will put on it unless I really only want cheese.

I love morning workouts as long as I have gotten enough sleep!

I NEED to run where you are!! I’m going back to Oregon this September and I can’t wait to explore some land :)

-I had to work later than expected so I picked up dinner which was a GF cheese pizza for me and a pepperoni pizza for my husband and daughter! My pizza was perfect, just cheese and delicious!! :)
-I did a TM run this morning do to timing issues (ie it was the only time I could)
-I’ve been doing early morning workouts for a few years now. I prefer them because it’s my time and I don’t feel selfish or like I’m neglecting family time because every one’s sleeping :) win win!

So… always been a morning runner since my second child (now 21!) liked to nurse at 5 am. Now…. we get up together. Share a cup of coffee as he heads out to his summer job at a golf course and I head out to run. Kinda full circle, huh?

Training for Philly~ starting June 27th.

Love your blog, Janae!

Reply

Oh the struggle is so real. I couldn’t do it this morning, so I ran 5 miles in 91 degrees at 5pm. But it’s done! On a trail… A flat paved SUNNY trail.

My favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor is mint chocolate chunk. They only have it in stores though- not the take home flavors.

Reply

The Tonight Dough was awesome – definitely worth trying!

I usually prefer simple pizza toppings, though the pizza place by my house has one with broccoli rabe and sausage – really delicious!

Today was an unplanned rest day – moving while starting a new business and training for a half marathon is starting to take its toll. I napped instead.

I really need to start getting my runs in earlier, marathon training in the summer is going to get tricky otherwise.

The Tonight Dough was amazing!!!!

As a devout peanut butter fan, I had high expectations for the Tonight Dough. However, it wasn’t great.. BUT, if you haven’t tried Peanut Butter Half Baked, you must.

Reply

Definitely try the Tonight Dough! I LOVE it. Maybe my new fave…it’s a close call between that and Peanut Butter Core. Also the peanut butter and banana greek yogurt Ben and Jerry’s is delicious too. BUT I just convinced my roomie to try the Tonight Dough tonight and she said she’d never doubt me again :) So I’m feelin’ pretty good about recommending it to you now.

I like pizza with 2-3 toppings, nothing too crazy but it adds a bit of extra flavor.

I took today off of running just simply because I couldn’t motivate myself to do it. I live in Boston just got back from a week long vacation in California on Tuesday morning (at midnight) so my jet lag is so real right now. I’m tired pretty much around the clock, except for when I’m supposed to be going to bed (like now).

I will be trying to wake up early tomorrow to beat the heat as well. Otherwise I will be on the treadmill since i’ts supposed to be in the 90s here in Boston. Fingers crossed I get my butt out of bed!

Reply

No runs for me today, dealing with a possible ear infection? Ick. Favorite Ben and Jerry’s definitely Chocolate Therapy!

OMG! The struggle is seriously real! I need to work on being strong like you because I did not get up early this morning. It will happen though- I know so.

And, I’ve always been a fan of Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked. Yum!

Half Baked is the BEST!! You must try it!
I love Park City – was there in winter and one of my favorite places!!
The struggle is indeed real to get up so early! I like to get it done, but it is hard for me to get up early. I think, like you said, you have to stick with it for a while.

Tonight Dough looks soooo good! I would definitely try it!!

I love plain cheese pizza but there has to be lots of cheese on it. I love veggie pizza’s too.

Your ‘happy place’ picture is gorgeous!

Okay I Am sooo thankful I read this post! I just switched from night shift (I’m a nurse) to a 9-5 schedule and waking up early is KILLING ME! I used to do it all the time before I worked nights, but now its a struggle to even wake up early, much less go workout. Whew, glad I am not alone.
Ran on the trail by my work today. Felt nice to be on the dirt and rolling hills.

I’ve never had the tonight dough but it sounds yummy! I pretty much love all Ben & Jerrys!

Fave Ben & Jerry’s = half baked. Tonight dough looks delish though! You should def try it and let us know what you think.

I’m way too familiar with early morning runs/workouts. I get up at 4am to get my run in before work. I’m used to it by now but it’s still BRUTAL getting out of bed. Totally worth it though!

My favourite Ben & Jerry’s is half-baked. I keep seeing all these new fancy ones on different blogs but I don’t think they’ve all landed in the UK yet. I really wanna try the one you mentioned!

I’m having a rest day today, my knee has been playing up and I have a half marathon on Sunday so getting ready for that..
I did a tempo run yesterday at 7am and that was a struggle. I know to some people that’s a late start, I couldn’t imagine running before 6am.

The Tonight Dough is the bomb! It has actually turned into my new fav…..give it a try!!

Reply

I really do like the Tonight Dough flavor, but it’s pretty chocolatey………..I think my favorite is still Half-Baked. I’ve bought Tonight Dough more than once though :)

I LOVE margherita pizza!!!! My fav!

Today I did a track work-out–did 1 1/2 mile warm-up and cool down and then 400s and 800s on the track for my speed workout :)

It’s funny that you mention early workouts b/c I’m a teacher, and I just started summer vacation yesterday. I have 2 daughters though, so I need to get out early in the morning before my husband leaves for work. Today I got up at 5 am to get it done and to beat the heat/humidity. I told my friend that I need my head checked for getting up at 5 am on my 2nd day of summer vacation, but now that it’s done, it’s worth it. Beating that darned heat/humidity/sun makes it worth it to me!!!!

Reply

Tonight Dough is one of the best B&J flavor I’ve had – it has SO MANY COOKIES!

Reply

Something I love about morning runs – you feel so accomplished before everyone else is even awake! As a GF girl, I like Phish Food and the new Banana Peanut Butter Frozen Greek. And Cherry Garcia :)

Reply

Favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor = anything Ben & Jerry’s; I just LOVE ice cream so much! I’m kinda the same way with pizza, but I die for meat lovers…it’s 8:30 in the morning, and I’m already craving pizza and ice cream!!!

Waking up early for anything is always a struggle, but especially for workouts! I wish I could be out pounding the pavement, but just found out I have a stress fracture in my hip, so I haven’t been able to run for a couple weeks. And this is just when I’m gearing up for my first marathon training cycle to begin :( but better to rest and feel better than permanently injure myself. Love following your blog/social media -it’s nice to run (but not really) along with you!!!

Reply

The Tonight Dough is pretty good, but I don’t desire it really. If you want some ice cream you can’t walk away from you need to try Mayfield’s Extreme Moosetracks! I’m telling you. It’s a chocolaholic’s dream…

Reply

Absolutely gorgeous trail photo! Do you run it by yourself? (and if so, do you ever feel unsafe?) …I just got my first can pepper spray after reading about running safety. No one better mess with me!

I hear you on the adjustments to waking up early. For me, it wasn’t the alarm clock that was the problem, it was the fact that I felt sleepy the rest of the day. It took a while to get used to the change in schedule but now I don’t feel “right” without my morning run!

Reply

Tonight Dough is DELICIOUS! Super yum if you’re in the mood for cookie dough. Hits the spot:)

the tonight dough has TWO types of cookie dough…need I say more? :)

Reply

Thanks for inquiring about Tonight Dough!! I’ve lingered past it, but wanted to make an educated purchase… Thanks for helping out w important life matters ;)

Reply

I like Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough – but (2) different types of cookie dough is intriguing.

Reply

Favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor is Mint Cookie or Half Baked. I have different pizza topping preferences depending on the pizza… for example when I get Amy’s frozen pizza I get the simple margherita one, but when I order from Domino’s it’s almost always pineapple and salami (SO good together). I haven’t ran in a few weeks now :( but it’s been nice relaxing after work.

Reply

My favorite B&J is half baked fro yo………..it has chunks of brownies and cookie dough!
I like either plain cheese, or my favorite…PINEAPPLE! If I am adventurous I add onions and green pepper. And if I am at a place that offers it, I get pineapple and avocado……….yum! My husband prefers mushroom or plain cheese. I guess we are pretty simple pizza folks.

I did 4 miles outside today, but since it was 92 degrees I had to wait until 6pm………even then it was still over 80! Yuck!

Reply

Phish food is also my favorite B&Js ice cream flavor but The Tonight Dough is a very close second. And I’ve tried a TON of their favors (basically a professional ice cream taster:)

Reply

It’s shameful. I live in NYC and still haven’t tried the tonight dough flavor. My fav flavor is butter pecan but lately I’ve been eating cookies and cream with some frosted flakes thrown in for crunch. Yum!

Reply

I am currently not eating sugar so I cannot spend too long looking at the carton of the Tonight Dough….
But I do have a question re: the Garmin 620! I am debating between that and the 220 and I am trying to figure out if the 620 is worth the extra dough. Do you think the cadence measurement is accurate? Have you used the vertical oscillation and ground contact features? Do you think they are accurate?
I wish I could do a test drive of the watches before I invest the money! Thanks for any input you have.

Reply

I hear you girl, I’m an evening runner too, but it’s hard to get in with kiddos and HEAT! I’m transitioning back to morning runs and it’s tough, but you are right, it is better than hitting the treadmill.
I’m lactose intolerant so no Ben and Jerry’s for me :( But, the Coconut So Delicious Chocolate Peanutbutter “ice cream” is really good!

Hi Janae, please could you tell me which model of brooks are the ones pictured in the first 2 pics of this post? Thanks!!

The Tonight Dough is DEFINITELY worth it. I held out for a few weeks thinking there was no way that I’d love it as much as Half Baked, but it’s good. REALLY GOOD!

Reply

the tonight dough is SO GOOD. please don’t get it because you will be addicted and need to have it forever and ever.

honestly. ridiculous.

Reply

The Tonight Dough is easily everything that is right with the world. Seriously. Thankfully one pint=one serving…right? :)

Reply

As a fellow Phish Food devotee, I totally understand how you feel, BUT the Tonight Dough is pretty amazing. One of my new favorites.

I like lots of toppings on my pizza, but my faves are turkey pepperoni and mushrooms!

Reply

I love love love bacon on my pizza. It’s so yummy and usually a must for me!

I’ve never tried Tonight Dough, but then again, I don’t care for peanut butter. I know, I’m crazy.

Reply

The tonight dough is awesome but I was shocked at how many calories they managed to cram in there lol.

Favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor? Phish Food or Chubby Hubby

Do you prefer simple pizza or lots of toppings? Cheese with mushrooms!

Where was your run today? Roads? Trails? Treadmill? Rest day? Today will be a short run outside…tapering for a half on Sunday.

Anyone else trying to get into early morning workouts again? I’d love to run before work but that would mean a 4am wakeup call and I’m just not that motivated!

Reply

No to The Tonight Dough! Sounds so much more exciting than it actually is. Get the Milk & Cookies instead :)

Reply

The Tonight Dough is my all-time favorite. Ever. I can never find it in any of the stores around here, but when I do they sell out quickly!!! :)

Reply

YES the Tonight Dough is fabulous – so much chocolate and peanut butter! I also love the cookie core flavors, especially the Boom Chocolatta one!

Reply

As a fellow lover of the Phish Food ice cream I must tell you to try the Tonight Dough!!! I really like it! Sometimes I’m disappointed when I get a bite of dough and it’s the peanut butter cookie one and not the chocolate chip dough (because choc chip dough with always be superior to PB dough) but it’s still excellent.

Reply

Do you love your glass bottle? I am so scared I will break one

Janae,

You actually (kinda) had better foot turnover on the trail run because you have to account for the fact you were going slower! If you multiply by your average pace for mile you get around 1330 steps per mile for the road running but 1440 steps per mile for the trail. :)

Reply

I am impressed! I have to start waking up early next week to get in my runs before work!! Any advice? What time do you wake up/go to bed? Thanks girl!
