All is right in my running world again…

My running love was definitely slacking the last few weeks but it is back in full force now.  It just took doing my favorite type of runs to be excited for running again.  I needed to get off the treadmill and outside in the gorgeous weather.

Monday:  Trail run.

Tuesday:  Early morning run with my favorite running girls.

PS this picture was taken by my Dadio.  We ran into him while was out walking with his friend.  Exercise buddies just makes the whole thing better.

I think it is completely normal to cycle through different emotions of how you feel about running.  For me that is what makes the running accomplishments feel even better—>  knowing that you stayed consistent with your training even when it was hard to get out the door and run.  I always know when I am feeling unmotivated with running that it is just part of the cycle.  I know that with some extra rest, a little bit of time and going back to my favorite types of runs that I will be feeling excited again in no time.

You know your running buddies are good people when you arrive to your meeting spot and you find them putting a porta potty back up after it was knocked over.

6 miles and back to my parents’ house before Brooke woke up.  I am officially excited to get back to meeting the girls a few times a week for an early morning run.  I love being done with my run nice and early, the endorphins are even more concentrated in my blood stream when I run with friends and we beat the heat in the early morning (Utah was in the 90s yesterday!!).

PPS I am using the Garmin 620.  It is a great watch and I love all of the extra settings/options (like the cadence) but the 305 is still my favorite.  It was just so reliable and durable but I definitely love the look of the 620 a lot more!

After some errands we hit up my friend’s backyard for some water fun.  Nothing entertains Brooke more than playing with water.

IMG 1885

My friend had an apple fritter there waiting for us when we arrived.  Now that is friendship.

PS I spy my permanent bottom retainer.

IMG 1905

Brooke loves to get my running shoes out for me in the mornings.  PS I should probably go organize those right now.

Megan D sent this to me this morning.  So ridiculously true:

What are your feelings towards running lately?!?

Let’s do compare the above treats for just a second—>  What would you choose to eat between a cookie, ice cream cone or popsicle?

Even though I’m about to run another ultra, I’m super chill about training right now. I’m logging my trip time but not worrying about pace. I’m even just running track based on effort. Its really refreshing!
Cookie. Ice cream. Then Popsicle.
Last running partner: my husband!

Well, running is always my number one outlet, so frankly I’m afraid to get grumpy about it for fear of dealing with its wrath. Right now I’ve got some weird funky bump on the top of my foot so I’m just tip-toeing around the edge of injury, laying low, staying as quiet as possible, hoping I don’t get devoured.

Reply

Tough call! It depends on the weather is my answer. If it’s cold outside, I want a cookie. If it’s hot, then I want ice cream. Popsicle’s are not something I usually crave so they lose. Boo…. :(

Reply

I know what you mean about running in the morning hours–it’s the best way to start my day! I feel good about running right now, but am dealing w/ some extra little tightness issues in my hamstring/calf so trying to just be smart and don’t push myself (I wasn’t able to run all of last summer and that was a major bummer). I would choose the ice cream, the cookie and then the popsicle.

Reply

I miss running! I have bronchitis now :( :( and haven’t been on a run since last week! No bueno!!!

I’m jealous that you’re getting your running groove back and I’m stuck in bed! I can’t wait to feel healthy again and get going on my Chicago prep!

Reply

Last running partner was my best friend on the day she moved. It was a good run, but sad when it was over! :(

Cookie, ice cream, popsicle. But ice cream BETWEEN two cookies would be the real winner!

I’ve been in a weird running funk lately. I have Utah Valley coming up in two weeks and then I’ll take a few weeks off which will help with my current bit of burnout. Never lasts long, but pretty normal for this stage in training, especially since I did a marathon less than a month ago!

Brooke’s swimming suit is possibly the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!

Reply

I’ve been slacking on my running as well, but I’m starting to get back into the swing of things this week. The last thing (not person) I ran with was my dog!

Cookie, Ice Cream, Popsicle.

Reply

Yes, emotions toward running definitely fluctuate! I find I’m happiest when I’m running about 5 days per week, outdoors, with some hills and not a ton of pressure on time. Sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason though and things shift back when you least expect it.

Reply

I’ve been recovering from a 50 miler….it’s taking longer than I want….my endurance just has not returned so almost all runs have been a struggle.

Ice cream! Too bad it just kills my stomach….

My 13 year old son did a 6 mile trail lap with me….Admittedly, there was more “hiking” than running but I was super proud.

I love running with girlfriends! It always makes running way more fun!

I have a bittersweet relationship with running right now. I no longer have the time (okay, it’s mostly the mental energy) to train like I want to, so I have to find a happy medium, which is harder said than done, between training hard and not running at all. I got so close, but did not reach, two of my major running goals (a BQ I missed by 8 seconds and a sub 20 5k by 3 seconds) but the window of time I had to train was closed and I now need to focus on other things. It’s so hard to not be as fast as I used to be, not because I’m not physically capable of it but because it’s just not mentally and schedully (totally a word) possible. Frustrating.

How did you get such a fun, big running group? That is amazing! I have 2 girls running with me now, but we have high hopes and big dreams for more.

Right now running totally depends on the time of day. Weird right? I do way better running in the afternoon/evening, but sometimes I have to go in the morning and that makes things hard sometimes.

Always ice cream. It’s my favorite…and popcorn. I like that too. Isn’t it fun that it’s warm enough to enjoy those kinds of snacks outside now? Also, water play for kids is one of my favorite things for them to do.

Last time was the my cousin and sister in law, that’s tonight too.

Reply

I’ve been feeling really indifferent towards running. I think it’s because I’ve been recently base building so it’s just boring miles. I can’t wait to start breaking through the plateau.

Ice cream is my favorite so I would choose that for sure.

Reply

Feelings towards running –>> HUMID! Ugh. It sucker punched me right in the stomach.

Can I pick the cookie WITH the ice cream? Last night my boyfriend made me an ice cream sandwich and it was kind of perfect!

Reply

Runnings been ok lately- nothing amazing but I don’t feel burnt out. Illl take it!

Reply

Thoughts on running……… jealous of anyone that can!!!!!! Out for probably 4 more months!!!!

Reply

Lisa. I am so so sorry. I hope your recovery is speedy and you are back out again before you know it.

Reply

I’ve been loving running even more than usual lately. Being in a new city with beautiful bike/running trails makes each run so relaxing and rejuvenating.
Cookie, ice cream, popsicle!
I ran with my husband several weeks ago and that’s the last time I’ve run with another person. I ran last week with my puggle, though – running with him makes great speed work!

Reply

I’m feeling good about running now. My mileage is in the low 30s, but that’s what I need to stay injury free for now.

I ran a little over a mile today in flip flops with my puppy. Not sure how your sister ran multiple miles, because my Achilles is achy now! I also ran with my husband and daughter a few weeks ago.

Ice cream will always be my favorite treat. Chocolate chip cookies come second!

Reply

Feelings toward running lately: SO EXCITED. I’m on week 2 of marathon training so that probably explains it. But I just crushed an interval workout this morning so I’m feeling really good!

Ice cream, cookie, then popsicle for my treat choices.

Last person I went running with was my 1 yr old son! He is always my running buddy whether he likes it or not :)

Reply

Running lately has been hard!! I am 25 weeks pregnant and feel as though my lung capacity has gone from a 10 to a 2, even when I am running slowly. It’s crazy how the body changes. But, I LOVE running and want to do it for as long as possible. I actually just got back from a trail run with a good friend – she is so kind to slow her pace for me.

I choose ice cream. But must one choose? Why not have all three? :)

Reply

I was feeling really great about running until my last long run, after which I kind of felt like dying for the next 24 hours. Too much sun I think, my Oregon skin didn’t know how to cope.

I want a Popsicle, like, yesterday. Actually, a chocolate covered coconut pop. That sounds like the best.

I last went running with Foot Traffic University, my marathon training group!

Reply

Cookie Ice Cream sandwich for sure.

They set back a tipped porta potty?? Did you open the door? How does that work….it seems as though all the “potty” would dump out all over??? Does it? Is it that gross…would anyone want to use it after its been tipped before its cleaned out??

Oh, so many questions from such a simple picture….hahahhaha!!

Reply

Ice cream cone ftw. Unless there was a brownie, ’cause brownies are the best.
I think the last time I ran with someone was last fall when I ran with my 8 year old. Too long!

Reply

Chocolate chip cookies for the win!!
I haven’t been able to run in ages. So I’ve been walking, yogaing, and biking.
I have a permanent bottom retainer too. Such a pain to floss. But at least we don’t have to worry about crooked teeth!
Now I’m craving cookies… :)

Reply

I’m out with a groin pull (ouch) for awhile. Starting PT next week.

Ice cream, ice cream, cookie, popsicle.

Reply

Oh that sounds awful Johanna. I am so so sorry! Good luck with PT and keep me updated!

Reply

I’m the sameee way about running.! 1 week ago I had no motivation to run. Now though, I am LOVING it again :)

geezz you have a ton of running shoes.! that must be nice

Cookie. cookie everytime :)

Reply

I have been feeling fairly unmotivated with running lately. Last week I was sick with an awful tonsil infection which left my whole body aching and motivation to do anything but roll around in bed watching Netflix very low. I am hoping to get back into it because I am running the Lululemon SeaWheeze half marathon in August, so gotta get to training!

Ummm how about an ice cream cookie sandwich!? That would be amazing right now.

Reply

I love that everyone is saying a cookie ice cream sandwich! Makes me think of that taco commercial where they are arguing over soft or hard shells and the little girl says “why not both?”

My current thoughts towards running are fear. I have a pain in my right foot that the x-ray said was not a stress fracture, but it still hurts like the dickens and I’m afraid that an MRI will show a stress fracture so I’m trying to not push it too hard.

I choose cookie, ice cream then popsicle.

My last running buddy was my father in law. I’m afraid I slow everyone down so I avoid running with people most of the time!

Reply

When I was in a running funk I would try hard and read quotes and look up some exercises to do. That helped me get out of it, as well as getting the hubby to enourage me to get out to go running.

Reply

I quite relaxed with running at the moment. I’m coming back from a hip injury, so taking my time with paces and trying not to overdo hard effort runs too soon. I did enjoy an awesome long run on saturday which reminded me why I love to run, and gets me excited to start going this summer.

Definitely popsicle > cookie > ice cream

Last person I ran with was my husband! It was during a 10K race and we ran together the whole time.

Reply

Last person I went running with was my mama! We could chat for hours and she listens as I ramble about boys and life and gives the best advice so it’s kind of perfect.

Have a GREAT night girlfriend! xo

Reply

How about cookie dough IN ice cream?!

Brooke’s little bathing suit makes me all kinds of happy. My mom and I went into Target today and 125$ later came out with four different baby outfits and a pair of shoes for my niece. Black hole.

Reply

Lately I have still been so excited to be back to running, and grateful for every good run I have.
The weather here has been rainy and cool this week, and I am wondering where summer is! Im sure I will regret saying this when its 100 degrees and humid, but right now I miss the warmer weather and am jealous of your 90 degrees!
I think I would have to go with ice cream!

Reply

Brooke’s bathing suit though!! So cute! Where is it from? So adorable. She made my day :)

Reply

I haven’t run in 11 days. I was on vacation in Peru and honestly, didn’t miss it one bit! I am interested to see how I feel when I get back to the grind tomorrow. One thing I am excited for – strength training! I can definitely feel the lack of strength training!

Can we pretend the ice cream cone is froyo? :)

Reply

I’m so glad you posted this today! For the past couple of weeks, I was feeling so unmotivated and just wanting to give up on my running. But this past week I’ve fallen back in love with it. I never thought others went through this too, but I’m so glad I’m not alone on this!

Reply

I think my relationship with running has become a bit one-sided recently. Like I’m a bit obsessed (very obsessed) and want to run all the time, think about running all the time, read about running all the time. But every time I run (recently) there’s a new ache or pain or blister :( But one of these days that will change and running will love me as much as I love it ;)

I would definitely be the ice cream cone :)

Reply

I was really not into running all winter, then got my mojo back for Boston, then lost it again. I’ve regained it within the past couple weeks because it’s so nice out, and it’s 5k season. Yay!!
I prefer to eat both ice cream and cookies together. I love it when the ice cream gets all melty and mushes up the cookie. Yummmmmmm… But in general, ice cream wins over everything else.
I last ran with my husband and my dog. Hubs did great, dog was a 500 yard sprint, followed by a three mile drag :)
PS: I drool over your shoe pile! That’s amazing!!!

Reply

I have never been out on a group run, but I can imagine it would go by so quickly with that many girls! Also, I have a permanent bottom retainer too! Glad to know they really are permanent, haha. Lastly, I would choose ice cream over all of the desserts!

Reply

Last person I went running with was my mom! She’s training for her first 10k :)

Put the ice cream cone between the cookies and that’s what I’d choose !

Reply

I have never gone running with anyone else. Maybe that’s odd? I don’t know.

Cookie, ice cream, or popsicle?…. Either brownie or cookie dough.

I cannot wait to watch Extreme Weightloss tonight!

Reply

I want to be as good of a runner as you someday. When did you get serious about running?

Reply

I am finally getting somewhat adjusted to the heat and humidity (although it has been cooler for the past few days so maybe I’m being overly optimistic), so I have been enjoying running. :) I would probably choose an ice cream cone, but it just depends because I really love cookies too. I run with my husband several days a week–it is a good time for us to chat. :)

Reply

After I ran my half I just put it on the back burner for a bit. I am working on HIIT strength training for a little while, but I know the running bug will come back to me.

Reply

Brooke’s bathing suit is SO incredibly adorable.

Reply

I’ve been a little frustrated with my pace lately. For some reason, no matter how fast I feel like I’m moving, it’s slower than I want it to be.

Ice cream cone. Always.

The last people I ran with were a couple of buddies from my running group. They make me faster!

Reply

Cookie all the time!

I am amped for running! I have a half – my second ever – this weekend. But I am taking two straight weeks off after, before I start a new cycle so I am also pumped for that. I want to prevent the burnout in advance and it will be nice to spend more time doing other exercise without worrying about fitting in my run too.

I have no running buddies and it makes me so sad. :(

Reply

Oh wow! It is sooo great to hear that you are human just like the rest of us. ;) After my first marathon in January, I had major running blues. It lasted till about mid-April. I’m back to loving it again, but that was a very weird thing for me to experience.

I feel kind of weird for saying this, but I gotta go cookie.

And, if you count my boyfriend walking on the treadmill next to me while I ran then that’s the last person I ran with. Otherwise, it would have been my friend “Mr. Chris” almost two Wednesdays ago.

Reply

I’m feeling pretty good towards running, just frustrated that I can’t get faster.

I’d go for cookie, but it has to be a soft cookie, not a hard, crumbly one. Probably a nice, most anickerdoodle.

Reply

I feel pretty good about running lately. Last week I was traveling for work and still got my training done so I felt great about that!

Last run with someone – 10 miles with hubby on Sunday :)

Ice cream would be #1 but coconut milk ice cream since I don’t do dairy!

PS – I L-O-V-E Brooke’s blue and white swim suit!

Reply

I’ve definitely had good feelings toward running lately. I can’t wait to race again!

I would choose the cone, but I think froyo is being left out here. I would choose that over them all.

This is so sad, but I haven’t run with anyone since probably early March. :/ Thankfully the school year is almost over, and I won’t have to run so freakishly early in the morning. It’s nice to have running buddies every now and then!

Reply

Brooks little suit! That cookie should never be sad. Cookies are awesome!

Reply

Does running on the treadmill while my 3 year old rides her bike in garage count as a running buddy?…I want a running buddy!
And I will take some salted caramel gelato ice cream plz over the others.
I’ve been only running 3 or 4 miles and really need to sign up for a half to get motivated to run longer. With 3 kids in: soccer, gymnastics and one in dance and a hubby who works out 5am then leaves to work it gets tricky. But there will always be the excuses….

Reply

I had a great run today after a bunch of really tough ones so I’m feeling better about running now. Definitely feeling like I can do hard things!

Reply

I’m loving running lately because i’m not training for anything until July so I can just go run to run. Just lots of short 5k length runs.

I’d go with the ice cream cone unless the cookie was fresh baked and warm.

Last person I went running with with my boyfriend’s 12 year old daughter. We ran a 5k together a couple of weeks ago.

Reply

I love ice creams which involve a cookie element. Like ice cream sandwiches – yummy!

I last ran with my sister, and this weekend will be running with my brother! We’re off to stay with my parents in France and just discovered they have a massive public forest behind their house! Some sleuthing on Google Maps implies it has clear trails and is perfect for running. How have we never found this before??

Reply

AWWWW brooke’s little bathing suit is the cutest! and I love that “comparing yourself” picture… gotta remember that one :)

Reply

I am LOVING running right now. I’m about to sort of switch into strength training mode (with running on the side) until I really dig into NYC Marathon training in July, so I’m nervous about that…

I’d go with an ice cream cone. Strawberry on a sugar cone with rainbow sprinkles, please. If it was an option, I’d go with a doughnut :)

Last night I ran with my running club. We have a weekly fun run 5K and while I ran alone in the group, it was awesome to be surrounded by such good company.

Reply

Icecream, without a doubt. Every time.

Reply

workout buddies are the best friends!

Reply

I’m in the love affair stage with running right now. After 3+ years of achilles issues I started running again about 4 months ago and am doing a 1/2 marathon in a few weeks. Physically running is still hard for me, but mentally, emotionally I’m on cloud 9 being back out there. I almost always run with girlfriends – it’s our social hour and therapy all in one.

Reply

I have days where running is hard………….having the motivation to get out the door, I mean. And then there are days where I can’t wait to go! I prefer the evenings though, as I cannot get my butt out of bed on a work day to go running.

I run by myself, but I like it that way……….it’s me time;)

And the dessert depends on the day………….a hot summer day would def be the popsicle. I prefer getting an ice cream cone from a fancy ice cream parlor, and the cookie would probably be my go to dessert.

Reply

I’m still using the Garmin 305! It’s a love-hate relationship. Love it becuase it is so durable and reliable. Hate because it’s SO huge and I have tiny tiny wrists. I have to wear a sweatband underneath it because the wrist strap is too big, even on the tightest setting.

Reply

Right now, I feel pretty much in love with running- I’m hitting goals and numbers of miles I never thought I would do! What a rush!

Give me ice cream ANY day!

I went running with my friend, Katie, who doesn’t typically run. She just laced up her shoes the weekend prior to our run and had a good time, so she asked if she could go on my next run. Yes of course!

Reply

I am in a really good place with running right now. Couldn’t be better :)
I’d pick ice cream, no cone, in a cup!
Last running partner: a deer I saw on the RT ran away from me…. lol

Reply

Adorable cartoon:) Id definitely take a delicious gluten free cookie. Last run was with one of my running BFF’s Jessica, and I’m super grateful for her!

Reply

A treadmill run with my work buddy at lunch- speed for her, recovery for me.

I think I’ve finally got my mojo back. That said, I’ll say I was recovering like a champ today. It was a tough, humid run. You’re right, though. Consistency is what gives us strength during the tough races. It’s nice to know we’ve pushed ourselves when it’s hard.

Reply

Brooke’s little anchor bathing suit IS THE CUTEST!

Reply

Aw I love that picture at the end- haha!
