Getting nervous.

I have a half marathon on Saturday (OGDEN… wahoo!!!) and so I am taking it pretty easy until then as far as running goes.  I jumped on my spin bike yesterday morning for 25 minutes before the Brookers woke up.

When I am spinning on my own I keep things pretty simple:

Warm-up for about 5 minutes

2 minutes heavy hill climb out of the saddle

1 minute sprint in the saddle (tension equivalent to a flat road)

1 minute jumps (lift and lower out of saddle with a medium hill tension)

Repeat a few times.

Brooke had a solid 13 hours of sleep Tuesday night so she was quite chipper all day yesterday.

IMG 0741

She is all about the eskimo kisses lately.

IMG 0725

I think I have found my new favorite snack.  Greek yogurt, berries, chocolate granola and the rest of our belgian waffle bites (from NatureBox).  Perfect midday fuel.

IMG 1308

I’ve made it through three weeks of Megan’s bootcamp classes.  Each class is 45 minutes total and she fits so much into each class.  Last night we did a whole lot of walking lunges so I am sure I’ll be cursing her name as I go up and down stairs today.

That’s what friends are for right?

She’s is whipping me into shape.  Her goal is to get me that sub 3 marathon too.

IMG 0747

During bootcamp we listened only to Beyonce/Destiny’s Child songs.  Classics.  Hopefully next week we will listen to TLC.

IMG 0746

I picked up Brooke after class and it is a good thing that I am doing all of this strength training because she wants piggy back rides everywhere.

IMG 0778

A cute friend of mine was sporting the PURPLE PureFlow 4s—>  I’m now looking forward to putting in a bunch of mileage on the ones that I have now so that I can get the purple versions asap.

IMG 0751

Brooke and I stopped by a friend’s birthday party.

 IMG 0758

While we were there we made quite the dent on the popcorn.

Also, Allie sent this to me and it is so true:

PS I am getting kind of nervous about running 13.1 miles on Saturday.  It’s crazy how during marathon training 13 miles was a pretty average run and now I am really nervous about the distance?!?  I think marathon training just warps our brains and now I am thinking like a normal human being and realizing THIRTEEN MILES IS A LONG WAYS TO GO!!!  Time to start carb-loading:)

Some randomness—>  Someone Finally Explains What That Extra Set of Shoelace Holes Is For!!!!

and maybe I am just extra emotional today but THIS VIDEO about a Great Dane puppy who was rescued made me cry!  “To celebrate the healthy days she had, and to track her growth and achievements, Dave documented Pegasus’s (the dog’s name) life by filming her daily while working with an animal therapist using a treadmill.  The daily exercises helped her to overcome her weaknesses as well as some of her disabilities.”

How many candles will be on your next bday cake?

30!!!!!

Do you have any workout equipment at home that you use? (weights/bands/treadmill/bike/DVDS/etc)

Do you get nervous before races?  Does it just depend on the distance or if you are trying to pr?

candles – Too many!

I have a treadmill and lots and lots of weights.

I always get nervous, you’ll be fine!

Brooke’s hair is adorable in pigtails. :)

I think it’s natural to get nervous for races no matter what, and it’s part of what pushes us during the race. 33 for my next bday, you’ll love your 30’s Janae!

31 candles on my next birthday cake. It’s weird because when people ask me how old I am, my automatic response is “26.” I know I’m not, maybe that’s just how old I feel? It was actually kind of fun getting into a new decade!

I have a treadmill, elliptical, TRX, and lots of weights, bands, stability gear. I’m working on a complete home gym. :)

I don’t feel nervous but I always start to feel like I’m getting sick or my foot will randomly hurt, etc. I’m guessing that is nerves being disguised as other emotions.

Reply

do you like your elliptical? i am considering buying, but am not sure which one to purchase.

I have a True M30 and I really like it. It’s quiet and works really well. The only complaint I have is that I can’t change the incline. It has good resistance, so it is a really minor complaint.

I love all of your pics with Brooke! So precious. :)

My next birthday (in October) will have 31 candles. I know, depressing.

I don’t have my own workout equipment, but my apartment complex gym has some nice treadmills and whatnot that I can use. I’m also a member at a gym, so I have access anytime I need.

I get REALLY nervous before races, especially half marathons. I am trying to get better about this and not put so much pressure on myself, but I tend to have a bit of anxiety leading up to a race. Hope this weekend goes well for you!!

Reply

-18 candles will be on my next cake!!! :)
-We gave away all of our workout equipment to help pay for a gym membership! We still have some free weights that I use for abs though!
-I always get nervous before races! I think it’s because I put so much pressure on myself to PR…I gotta stop doing that!

That greek yogurt bowl looks amazing….

No matter the distance, I DO always still get nervous just because some days are good running days and some days just aren’t….and I’m never quite sure what it is going to be. But then I remind myself it is RUNNING and it is FUN and we are stronger than we think. Go team!

I’m all about the throwbacks on my running playlists. Currently loving Come Baby Come by K7 (used to be my gymnastics warm up song!) :)

Have an awesome day!!!!

I can’t bring myself to type how many candles next birthday so let’s just say more than you ha ha. I have a mini home gym with my treadmill (Thor), spin bike, weights, TRX suspension trainer, bosu balls and exercise balls. Training at home with two kids is the way to go.

I always get nervous before a race but it’s a great adrenaline push and once I get started I remember why I love it so much.

Have a great day!

Candles? 25! Time to hit that quarter life crisis! ;]

I have a treadmill at home for crappy days and winter.. it’s not my favorite thing but it works..

I get nervous before all races no matter the distance. I’m still pretty new to running and I always see people who are much more experienced and I get a little intimidated by their fierceness. I know that I will grow to be just as fierce but it will take time to grow into it. :]

Reply

I’ll be 25 next month! Quarter century club..yay :)

I have a tiny apartment so as of now I have no equipment (besides a yoga mat and foam roller).

I get terrible race anxiety before every race (even if I just jog it). I have no idea why and even tried signing up for lots of races so I could get over it, but every race morning is horrible :( Once I start I feel fine and the nerves go away, so I don’t get it. I also have a race this weekend, so good luck to you!!

Reply

I get nervous the morning of every race, but I had my first half this past week and I was nervous for the entire week leading up to it! Now that it’s over, I can’t wait to do another :

Good luck this weekend, you’re going to kill it!

Reply

I sometimes get nervous for races and sometimes don’t…it is funny, though, how distances during races seem SO FAR but when you do them for training they are not bad. I think it is because you know you will be pushing yourself during the race!

I just signed up for my 2nd marathon- ahhhhhh! I am not looking forward to summer training:( I HATE the heat!

Reply

I’m nervous at the beginning of every race. Once I get started the butterflies go away. It seems like you’ve kept a good fitness base. You’ll do great on your half!

At home I have a treadmill, a spin bike and lots of weights.

Reply

Yikes…36 candles in my next birthday cake. I have a spin bike at home (the one you recommended to me) and I LOVE it. It’s the perfect nap time workout. I have a 1/2 in a few weeks that I’m nervous about. I hadn’t run in over a year prior to this. I decided to do it, and follow all my training runs (with the exception of this week. Hubby out of town, no child care and FLAT Bob tires I missed 1). I’ve been doing great and if I continue the pace I’ve been doing during my long runs I will beat my last 1/2 time by at least 15 minutes!!!

Reply

Lately anything more than 4 miles makes me a little nervous! Its crazy how training for a marathon can change our perspective of distances.
At home I have lots of resistance bands, some weights, a stability ball, and of course lots of foam rollers!
There will be 32 candles on my bday cake in October!

Reply

Oh you’re going to do awesome at your half on Saturday. No reason to be nervous.!! I don’t get nervous for races. Maybe I should a little..? Lol
There will be 22 candles on my birthday cake. Yupp I know, I’m a youngin still.

Candles on my next birthday cake: 24
My condo is pretty small so I don’t have any fitness equipment. I have my yoga mat and will sometimes do yoga videos but for some reason my puppy loves my yoga mat so it usually doesn’t work too well.
I get nervous pretty much before every race. It doesn’t what the distance is. The only time I don’t really get nervous is if I’m running with a non-runner friend just for fun (mud runs, color runs, etc.) because we’ll walk a lot of it.

Reply

35 candles…eek!
I just have free weights at home.
I get nervous for goal races, but not ones that I’m running just for fun. :)

Reply

32!!
I have a treadmill, kids treadmill, weights, bands, kettle bell and big ball. I would love a bosu ball and plates! Plus a bar to do pump!!

I always get nervous before a race!

Every workout will lead you closer to that sub 3 marathon. My husband just got his first sub 3 in October… 2:59:59! Every second counts. Just remember that when you’re racing :)

I always get nervous before races, but I’m fairly new to racing and hope the nerves go away as I get more experienced.
I’ll have 26 candles on my next birthday cake!
My home gym includes a treadmill, yoga mat, kettebell, and medicine ball.

I get nervous before every race, no matter the distance or the goal. Then as soon as I take off, the nerves turn into adrenaline and then I’m good to go!

26 candles, two weeks from today. I love birthday celebrations!

Reply

34 candles on my next cake, eek!

I have a treadmill, weights, and a few DVD’s that I use. I always try and work out outside or at bootcamp, but it’s great to have options when I have a sick kiddo or the weather is bad.

I almost always get nervous about races, even when I’m not trying to PR.

Reply

I loved those old school Beyoncé/Destiny’s Child songs! Totally adding them to my playlist ASAP – thanks!!!! I rotate four Pure Barre DVD’s – best thing I ever ordered, love the routine and it’s cheaper than taking the classes….My next birthday cake will have 37 candles next month. I would say yikes but I still feel like a kid.

Reply

Brooke’s hair braided = so adorable:-)

45 candles…wow, that’s weird to type. I had to really think about it to make sure that was the right number!
Weights and bands at home and my yoga mat.
I do get butterflies in my stomach before races, regardless of the distance.

Reply

That eskimo kiss photo warmed my heart!

I normally don’t get nervous before races unless I feel unprepared or a bit injured. I have been fortunate to avoid both this year but we are only halfway through so….

Reply

I’ll have 2 candles on my cake. A big 3 and a big 0 :). 30 candles would be a lot to light and blow out.

I don’t have a home gym but would love a treadmill and some free weights. I do have a yoga mat and tons of massage/foam roller stuff set up that I use. I bet you could totally do a sub-3 marathon and way to go on the boot camp, so fun that they have songs by the same artist!

Reply

47 candles on my next cake – it’s so weird because I still feel 30. But my daughter graduating next week reminds me I’m not as young as I feel!

I have a bike trainer I can set my road bike up on for indoor riding – I got it for Triathlon training and it was a life saver. I also have a lot of weights, bands, videos and a step!

I always get nervous before a race – no matter the distance. Maybe even most nervous for a 5K because I feel like I have to run fast and I’d rather run far than fast :)

Reply

Hi J! Keep up that strength training, girl! Nice work! I have some weights, a foam roller and resistance tubes at home. I love to use the tubs to stretch my legs and upper body, as well as for some exercises, when I don’t have time for the gym. You’ll be awesome on your half this weekend!! Oh and that cake looks so refreshing!

Reply

I’ve seen that great dane video and it makes meheart melt! Love it! and 25 candles this year!!

Reply

I just watched that video this morning. It was so sweet.

I have a half on Sunday that I have barely trained for. I think the most I have run is 7 miles so it should be interesting. I teach the same kind of workouts that you have been taking lately so at least I’m in decent shape, but my cardio endurance is another story. Fingers crossed…

Reply

Bahaha that donut quote is awesome! I love that Brooke loves giving eskimo kisses! Happy Thursday!

I’l have 28 on my next cake! Can’t believe it!! I love the throw back with Destiny’s Child and TLC songs!! So fun. Nothing like spicing up a playlist to make a hard workout fun!

30 candles for me too in September! I am looking forward to my 30s!! So much to look forward too after all the growing in my 20s :-)
I have a elliptical at home and some free weights.
I also get nervous for races! Its a bit of nerves combined with excitement. After all the time and dedication put in for training, its a big deal!

Reply

I always get nervous, no matter how short the distance.

33 for next birthday. I actually had to think about that, and worked it out based on my husband’s age (not on the year I was born….or, you know, just knowing how old I am like most people do).

Reply

I’ll be 32 but I don’t mind getting older cause life keeps getting better!

Are planning to race the half? Or just for fun?

Reply

Sometimes I think shorter mileage is harder. I can 8 miles easy but 4 miles feels like torture. Why is that? Probably because you push harder with shorter distance. Love the purple kicks!

Reply

Good luck this weekend. I didn’t realize how soon your half was. I do get nervous for races but only big ones I’ve been training for. For instance, this summer I’m just running a lot of 5is and I’m actually not too nervous for those!

Reply

Those waffle bites look amazing!

Reply

I’ll be 27 in August and freaking out about it. I can’t believe I’ll be 27!

I think it’s good your nervous! I usually do the opposite with the half distance. I always underestimate it, since marathons have me so jaded. I end up thinking “oh it’s onnnly 13.1! I can do that easy peasy.” The nerves will keep you smart while racing!

Reply

47 candles on my cake this July. I’m in better shape then I was at 25 and 30!

I have so much equipment at home, it’s where I prefer to workout. Bosu, weights, bands, large ball, small ball for Physique 57, videos, yoga mat, treadmill, stepper on a multi-use strength bench. I should invite friends and charge a nominal membership. ;)

I get nervous when I have to get up early. It’s silly but that’s usually when I can’t sleep. (even if I don’t have to travel. It’s annoying).

Reply

My next bday I will be 34…yikes. I still feel like I’m in my 20s…oh well.

I love love Nike’s training app…I try to do the 45 minute yoga workout at least once a week…it has helped me through my leg injuries.

I always get nervous before a race, especially if I am doing a new distance, trying to PR, or doing a different kind of run. Like this weekend I’m doing a trail race and I’ve never done one of these before, so a bit scared. I always have to remind myself that I’m doing this for fun and I love the feeling after my race!

Reply

Next February I will be 44 (and already planning my birthday trip that we do every year). I do have equipment at home. Weights, power tower, TRX, rowing machine and bike on a trainer. I also have a yoga area w/ an altar. I really like my workout space and besides outdoor runs and bike rides and swimming, that is my happy place!! Good luck w/ your race this weekend!

Reply

I ran my first 13 miles yesterday, and while physically I don’t think it was any harder than the 10 miler the week before, mentally those 3 additional miles were tough! So much of running is in our heads.

I have a treadmill at my apartment, I mostly use it for walking though since I have upstairs and downstairs neighbors. It was free! Someone needed space and just gave it to me! I haven’t gotten much use out of it yet (have only had it for about 2 months) but I will def be using it on rainy days or cold winter days.

I turned 30 this February, so next year is 31………eeeeeeek!

i’ll be 42 this year! ACK!
I get nervous for big races with logistical stuff like the NYC Marathon. But mostly I enjoy races.

I learned that shoe trick at Feet Fleet a few months back and it helps stabilize my ankle a bit too!! I have a treadmill, kettle bell and exercise ball at home…all of which I never use. Oops. I know what you mean about running 13 miles. During marathon training I say, oh only going out for a quick 13 miler, be back soon. Not normal.

I’ll have 30. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!

I get nervous before every.single.race. No matter the distance. You’ll rock this race! Good luck!

i can’t believe you didn’t know the shoelace trick!! I learned it while working at a running store and it was a game changer!

I’ll be 42. sigh. I just saw the shoelace trick too. Crazy! I have weights, kettle bell, a bike trainer to put my road bike on to ride inside & a treadmill (that I hate btw) LOL. I always get a little nervous before a race but especially for a Half.

I get insanely nervous before races – sometimes I cry for no reason other than being nervous, but then I’m fine once the race starts.

I have some weights and a bike trainer at home, but don’t use them as much as I’d like. I love the Jillian Michaels DVDs.

43 candles on my cake in a couple of months!!! :( That sounds old.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that thinks marathon training tricks your brain! After finishing the Illinois Marathon a few weeks ago, I took a couple weeks off and then have been running shorter distances during the week. I used to be able to go 8-9 miles on weekday mornings and it was no big deal … Now, I go 4-6 and that feels like PLENTY.

Good luck this weekend!

Ogden is an amazing run!! It’s beautiful, you will love it! I’ve done the half many times and this year I’m doing the full. It’s my first full in 8 years so I am super nervous. It is actually comforting to me to know that others (like you) still get nervous too! Best of luck! 38 candles for me next month!

I’m running a half Sunday and this round of tapering really has me nervous! I know that part of it is that I improved my times each of my 3 halves last year (from 2:08 to 1:56) so I want that trend to continue — I’d love to be at 1:45 some day!

Best of luck in your race this weekend!

27 candles on my next birthday cake!

I have some yoga mats at home that I dust off every once in a while, and hubby has some rusty barbells in the garage. I really want a treadmill because it seems easier to just own one than to go to the gym and use those, but I haven’t won that battle yet.

I’m always nervous before a race. A lot of times I’m nervous just before a long run. I don’t think it will ever go away, not until running becomes “comfortable” for me.

I will be seeing 30 candles very soon as well! Right now most of my workouts are outside or in the cross fit gym. I do occasionally wake up early to do some intervals of treadmill and strength training with body weight and kettle bells.

I always get so nervous before races, I try to remind myself to trust my training because I get to the start and all the sudden think I have forgotten how to run/bike/swim. Its so silly!

Reply

Good luck with your race on Sunday. Four weeks after Boston should have you in great shape. I was shocked to PR my 10k last weekend after only 3 weeks, but my coach was not surprised at all. I also ran a half the next day, call me stupid or crazy, but running at Disneyland for Mother’s Day was super fun. I was excited to make the podium twice in my age group earning second in both races!

next bday cake…44! I always get nervous before a race, whether it’s for fun or I’m really trying to PR or something. Over time I have built myself a small gym in my basement with a treadmill (my lifesaver during our Canadian winters), free weights, a TRX, squat rack and stability balls.

I totally get nervous!!

28 candles! What kind of cake is that? Is it angelfood? I neeeeeed to find gluten free angelfood cake. I need some right now (my senior students are taking a test).

I have weights, a yoga mat, and a giant red exercise ball–that I use for ab exercises.

I think you and Brooke are just as dedicated to popcorn as much as I am.

Reply

Lets just say that the amount of candles would be a fire hazard…

I have so much equipment. I rarely use any of it since i mostly run and do yoga at my studio. A stationary bike that might be older than me, an ab roller (remember those?) free weights and a bench, a bosu ball, resistance bands, weighted balls, foam rollers, Pilates rings, yoga mat & blocks…

I do still get nervouse before any race, because you just never know how you will feel. I think it is natural to feel nervous and it means you care.

Best of luck in the half! You’re gonna kill it!

When I did bootcamp, we listened to Destiny’s Child too – the best to get to moving hard!! :)

Turning 30 will be excellent! You’ll be the baby in your new age category at your races!!

I have a treadmill, an elliptical, a rowing machine, an exercise ball and some assorted dumb bells. None of which I use very often unless the weather is horrible outside, or I am injured and can’t run.

Brooke’s braids are adorable, and don’t worry you will fly through those 13 miles!

do you like your elliptical? i am considering buying, but am not sure which one to purchase.

Mine is a really basic, old school model with no bells and whistles so I actually find it really boring. I think the newer models that they have out these days would be a lot of fun though, they are nice because they are so easy on your joints!

30 for me too….the funny thing is that I’m most fixated about being bumped into a different age group at races. The 30 – 39 age group tends to be SUPER competitive.

I have a really ghetto stationary bike that I bought like four years ago but it still does the trick. We have a treadmill that I barely use – I’ll run on ice before resigning myself to the dreadmill….I’ve used it only 4 times in the last six months.

I only get nervous for races where it’s the first time that I’ve ran that distance…like this weekend, I’m doing my first 50 miler and you can bet that I’m freaking out!

I can’t wait for my daughter’s hair to get as long as Brooke’s so I can braid it. She’s too cute. You are one lucky mom.

Janae – question for you! I am thinking of running the St George Marathon (and raising money for Girls on the Run) but I’m nervous about training at sea level and then racing at altitude. Logistics always makes me nervous, especially if it is an out of town or out of state race.

Definitely! My last race was a 10 miler and I was super anxious about getting to the race on time. The fact that there were 40,000 runners trying to get there at the same time made me even more nervous. Once I get to the start line I am fine- the running was the easy part!

I want Megan’s popcorn stat. Woman has skills. That bowl of yogurt goodness is looking mighty fine too. Maybe I should go eat. Sounds like I am hungry. But then again, when I am not hungry? I mean, it’s not like I bring food from home to ADD to my meals at restaurants or anything.

I am almost always nervous before a race. Unless I am doing strictly for fun and legitimately have no goals. You will do great though!

I have a treadmill, exercise ball, medicine ball, various weights and restistance bands, a pull up bar, punching bag (does a jump rope count) and A LOT of different exercise DVDs and programs. I used to think I wanted a spin bike eventually to add to the repertoire, but now I think I want a step mill. Pretty sure they are a lot more $$$ though.

I get nervous every race! I’ll be running Ogden full this yet and pray for no rain. I ran it 2 years ago, 16 weeks pregnant!, and it was so miserable in the rain. This year I’ll be 23 weeks pregnant running so I don’t need any more obstacles.

33 – when did this happen?! I CANNOT make myself work out at home . . . I get nervous about marathons. Good luck this weekend and you are lucky there are still half marathon’s where you live – here in Florida racing season is O-V-E-R soon HOT already.

btw – you should try a barre class – talk about difficult work out!

I hope your nerves settle soon and that you rock that half marathon of yours! I will be sending prayers and good thoughts your way. I love Brooke in those overalls!

39!! Time freakin’ flies.

I use weights. And my treadmill the most. Lately I’ve been hooked on benderfitness.com. she is amazing and seems really sweet and post a new workout almost everyday. I love her! Go check her out.
