I’ll have my race recap up tomorrow morning! It was a beautiful course and I definitely want to run the Ogden 1/2 Marathon again.
It ended up raining pretty hard from start to finish so…
As I was running along the course I decided to come up with ten great things about running in the rain because it seems as though the rain is following me around from race to race. Here are some really great things about running in pouring rain:
1. It allows you to realize that NOTHING IN THE WORLD feels better than a hot shower and dry clothing after running for awhile in cold temperatures and rain.
2. They will give you one of these nifty solar blankets after the race and it will save your life. It is like being wrapped up in gold.
3. Your mom sends you really cool texts like this one after you finish to make you feel hardcore (she sent this one after I ran Boston last month in the rain and wind).
4. Your shirt doesn’t ride up (some of my tanks like to travel up as I am running). Your clothes stay in place because they are soaking wet and plastered to you.
5. You hopefully get to see a rainbow before, during or after your run.
6. My lips don’t get chapped the entire time. With all of the moisture from the rain I don’t have to dig into my spibelt while I am running to reapply my chapstick.
7. You get to rehydrate for the remainder of the day with hot chocolate and marshmallows. Extra marshmallows because you are hardcore for running in the rain.
8. You get to run off of feel instead of checking your garmin 20 times a mile because either your garmin is busted because of all of the water or you can’t read the numbers because of all of the droplets that stick to the screen.
9. You realize EVEN MORE how amazing all of the race volunteers and spectators are—> Standing out in the freezing cold and rain for hours helping all of the runners out = they deserve awards.
10. It does REALLY cool things to your hair like this lovely style below… all for free!! What a deal:)
A few more things from yesterday:
My bff Jess had a wedding reception yesterday. She got married in Cali in March but had a reception in Utah too for all of her Utah peeps:)
The food was ridiculously good.
And so were the desserts.
Earlier in the day I had some grilled pineapple, mango cod and the best garlic sirloin. Yesterday’s eats were delicious.
Enjoy your Sunday! Hopefully you slept in a bit, made a really good breakfast and that now you are off to do some of your favorite things!!

I like running in the rain. Granted there is a limit to that and I’d rather run in the rain this time of year than say in January.
It looks like a beautiful wedding reception! We got married in Colorado and then had a wedding reception in Kansas a few weeks later, it worked out well!
Molly @ Motherhood and Marathons
Racing in the rain definitely makes you feel hardcore! Looks like such yummy food!! I raced yesterday and my hairstyle looked pretty similar to yours – it was really fun brushing it out :)
Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious
Funny! I thought my shirt rode up for other reasons lol! Good to know its not just me. Leaving home today from Blend. Sad to be leaving but it will be good to be home!
Jessica @ VEGGIE RUNNING MOMMA
Rain is just one of those things you have to embrace. Because you can’t control it. it rains all the time here in Oregon, so I dont mind rain.
Looking forward to the recap.!
Hayley C
Congrats!! I ran the Brooklyn Half Marathon yesterday and we had some pretty bad rain too- luckily I only got stuck in it the last mile and a half but I was VERY happy I brought dry clothes to change into!!
The Hungry Runner Girl
CONTRATS Hayley on your 1/2 yesterday in the rain! Dry clothes = heaven!
Jennifer @ JenChoosesJoy
It rained here for my entire long run yesterday and my hair was a mess!!
Grilled pineapple is SO good!
Becky @ Ok, so here's the plan
Running in the rain is fun, though I’d rather not race in the rain. I’m trying to decide on an easy and delicious breakfast, but I’ll probably end up having toast because I desperately need to do the dishes…
Will @ TeelFit
I’m glad you had a great day and race yesterday! I threw my parents a surprise 20th anniversary party last night, so that’s how I spent my Saturday :) it was a ton of fun! Today will be spent doing some Bootcamp and then catching up on some homework! Have a great day, can’t wait to see the race recap later on :)
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes
I actually like running in the rain – it keeps me from overheating and the shower afterwards is the best. Hope you have a great Sunday!
Polly @ mytimerunner
I love the rain… makes you feel like a beast!!!! Plus, here in South Georgia, it is HOT and HUMID! Trust me, rain is always welcome!!! :)
So glad to see that my hair isn’t the only hair to get so tangled when worn in a ponytail! I get so frustrated! Wondered what the secret was for these that have to perfect ponytails…. maybe there is no secret. Some hair just tangles! Aggravating!!! I should own stock in the the amount of detangler I use!! LOL!
Emily
I ran the Brooklyn Half yesterday in the rain!!! An amazing run. I was about to climb the one long steep hill on the course when the downpour started and it kept me cool the whole time. I also love the Mylar wraps in the end!!! My legs have been bad during this training so I thought of what you wrote the day before and I pumped my arms like never before!! I think they carried me the entire run!!
The Hungry Runner Girl
Way to go Emily on the Brooklyn half and I am so glad the rain helped you to stay cool:) YAY for pumping your arms!!!
Susan
Fun race! I LOVE running in the rain–it’s so fun, and I get to wear my bright orange rain jacket!!
Started off the day w/ a 20.5 mile bike ride and now to enjoy some 11 year old baseball.
Have a great Sunday!!
Annette@Sweatingthroughlife
I always struggle to get started running in the rain, but if it starts while I’m running, I love it!
Reception looked beautiful and so did those desserts.
Robyn @ Robyn's Living Life
The rain is fine as long as it isn’t cold- it definitely does keep you cooler. God bless hats:)
Congrats!
Elizabeth Beil
I love running in the rain! Your list was awesome, I love the positivity of the hair style :). Always a great surprise when you finish! ;)
Linda
#4 Definitely. Ha ha.
Sometimes running in the rain can be therapeutic. Other times, just plain squishy.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures
Too funny about the Garmin – my watch was unreadable in Boston due to the rain drops so I didn’t have a clue most of the time! Glad my husband ran with me to pace me :) The reception looks beautiful! And wow on the food.
Looking forward to the race recap!
Loribeth
I love running in the rain, although a light rain is better than a downpour. And I really love my hat when in rains.
Grilled pineapple=LOVE.
Molly Rose
That wedding food DOES look really good!
How long does it take you to get out that knot in your hair??!!! And for it to look that fabulous only hours later?? Skills.
Running in the rain makes me a precautious praline (made that up) because I am prone to tripping/slipping/and messing up ligaments, I usually just hit the treadmill if it’s raining. Or stay inside and sleep to the rain. Yes, the latter.
Andrea
Love that hair photo- it is so true! And yay for non-chapped lips. I think Utah is playing a trick on us with a super mild winter and super wet spring (it snowed in Park City!). Can’t wait to read your race recap!
The Hungry Runner Girl
SNOW in PC!?!?! AHHHHH. What is happening?!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine
Congrats on making it through that rainy race! I will never forget running the Houston marathon in the rain- the chafing was unreal! And I absolutely hate it when my hair gets like that because it takes me an hour to comb it out and my ams get so tired. Enjoy your day relaxing and recovering!
Kaella
Running in the rain makes me feel hardcore but I can’t say racing in rain in my ideal. Congratulations on pushing through!!
Have fun with Brooke today– you must be so excited to see her!
Laur
The piece of salmon on your plate is making my mouth water. It looks like it’s so FLAKEY! GAH. Your friend is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Congrats to her!
And Wegman’s makes this grilled pineapple in a chili sweet sauce. It.is.so.good.
Pille @ LivingOnTheRun
When you’ve been injured even running in the rain feels like a privilege :)
The Hungry Runner Girl
SOOOOOOOOO TRUE!!!!!
jade
Is it raining everywhere?? I’m up in Canada and we have been getting a mix of rain and snow. Running a race in the rain is ok until you finish…then you just feel cold and soggy.
The rainbow picture is really beautiful.
Deirdre
living in Ireland, running in the rain is inevitable! To solve the pony tail issue I plait mine – no tangles!
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out
Wedding food/desserts are the BEST!! I can’t wait for all the weddings I’m going to this summer!!
Leigha @ The Yooper Girl
Can’t wait to hear about the race!! I’m seriously itching to do a half so bad. A girl can only race so many mile and 2 miles.
Just had pancakes and a green smoothie eaten outside.. love eating al fresco!
Amanda B @ Cupcakes and Miles
Oh yuck! I’m sorry your race was rainy, but I am proud of you for staying positive. Your list of 10 is awesome! I especially like #10!
I’ve ben pretty blessed to have not yet had a rainy run/race.
And, yeah my Sunday has been great so far. I did get to sleep in, had a delicious breakfast, and am looking forward to ME-time here in a bit.
Angie @ Pace With Grace
I just love your positivity and this list is great! It rained for both my runs this weekend so this is fresh in my mind! I feel ya on the snarl-fest of hair. I bring a comb (wide-tooth) in the shower and after applying conditioner I comb it out. Its still hard but makes it much easier :-)
Kristina @ Blog About Running
That text from your mom is awesome!!!
I can’t wait to hear about your race. I’ve only raced one time in the rain but it was super humid and warm that day, so when the rain came during mile 12 I was so ecstatic!!! It felt amazing. I don’t know if I could handle racing the whole thing in the rain though. I hate when water gets in my eyes, and even with a visor on once that gets soaked through the water can drip in (boo)!
J.L.
Hey…I did the same rainy Ogden Half yesterday for the first time. I’d definitely do it again, but boy was it rainy! The favorite part of the race for me was running through the canyon and the waterfall up on the right…I just remember thinking “Man, life is beautiful!”
The Hungry Runner Girl
CONGRATS!!! Okay, that waterfall was insanely beautiful. I couldn’t believe it… I had the same thoughts as you:) Congrats and hopefully you warmed up shortly after finishing!
Natalie @ Never Serious Blog
Hahaha – that text from your mom is the greatest!
And OH MAN. Grilled pineapple. Just YES.
Crickett
Ran the Ogden full marathon. Last six miles stopped being about avoiding puddles and was about how big of a splash I could make. :)
The Hungry Runner Girl
Wow. You are seriously my hero. I barely finished the half in those conditions… congrats on doing the FULL and for making the best of those puddles:)
Julie VerHage
Number 1 was definitely the first thing that came to my mind!
Natalie
We finally got rain here a few days ago and it was glorious!!
I’m excited for a fun Sunday with my family!
The wedding reception looked beautiful!
Have an awesome day!!
Suzy
I don’t have much choice regarding rain-running as the Pacific NW tends to be a little wet. I grew up playing soccer and had to pretty much get over the rain in a hurry. Now I could care less. I’m just not a fan of the blisters and chaffing that come with running in a downpour!
Suzy
Oh, one more thing… I once ran through such hard rain and wind that the rain literally washed one of my contact lenses out of my eyeball! THAT was just stupid.
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul
What a fun wedding reception! And your wet hair pony tail is styling! :D
Meghan@ GetOffYourButtAndRun
That food looks fantastic! I was hoping for rain today and I struggled through humidity. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
Jaz
Ah I love this Janae! So important to try and find the good things about running even when the conditions aren’t your first (or second or third!) choice. I ran a half marathon with my Dad this weekend, after moaning all week because I thought my hip would be too sore. Feeling really grateful and happy now :)
The Hungry Runner Girl
Jaz, that is seriously so awesome that you ran a half marathon with your dad!!! So glad that your hip is okay:)
Brooke
I saw you at the start! But then felt like a weird stalker so didn’t say hi :) Congrats on a great time . It was a wet soggy day, I would have paid good money for some hot chocolate at the finish!
The Hungry Runner Girl
Brooke,
We are in a fight right now. YOU SHOULD HAVE SAID HI!!!!
Congratulations and I hope you got some hot chocolate shortly after:)
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles
I am all about being positive! Looking forward to your recap. I actually like running in the rain but I could do without the major downpours :)
Half Marathon James
We often forget just how special the spectators and volunteers are to races. Without them they would not be the same at all. They are the heroes for coming out to make the races what they are… I ALWAYS make sure to smile and say thanks to all the volunteers, and high five as many of the kids out supporting as I can…
Kathee
That was a brutal marathon! My first and I want a do-over! haha
The volunteers were amazing and I’m grateful I finished as I hear about so many that were pulled off the course freezing.
Great job!
The Hungry Runner Girl
Kathee! I seriously don’t know how you did 26.2 MILES in that weather. You are incredible. I know of a bunch of people that had to drop out too. You are amazing. I hope your next marathon is a million times better:)
Kim Inkley
I started reading your blog this past December and it helped motivate me to sign up for my first marathon- the Ogden Marathon!! I ran yesterday, and despite the pouring rain and my frozen hands, I LOVED it! The best part- I ran a 3:31 and qualified for Boston!!! Thank you, Janae, for helping runners like me feel more confident. You’re amazing!
The Hungry Runner Girl
AHHHH KIM!!! You did incredible. Your first marathon, crazy weather conditions and you QUALIFIED FOR BOSTON!?!?! DANG WOMAN!!! Can I have your autograph!?! Huge congrats!
abby
I ran the Horse Capital Half in Lexington, KY yesterday! It poured rain for about 6 miles out of the whole thing. Thankfully my phone made it out alive (don’t ask me how..) and I’ve never run in that much rain before, but I kind of enjoyed it! You do feel really hardcore! It was my first half and I’m already looking forward to running more (suggestions of good ones on the east coast/south?). Congrats on yours yesterday! :)
Annemarie
Running in the rain is rough! I have been lucky enough to avoid racing in it, but have had a few soggy training runs. By the end of a long run, I always feel like I am carrying around an extra 5 lbs. Congrats on your run!
Important question – where did you get the pants that you wore to the expo? They are SO cute!
The Hungry Runner Girl
HEY!!! They are my favorite pants… they are from gap! They don’t have them anymore online but I just got the jean version of joggers and they are pretty much my favorite ever:

Jenee
The wedding reception food looks delicious!
I like to run in the rain in the Summer, being in Georgia it gets super hot here.
Oh, I wanted to tell you this the other day – a radio show (Bob & Sheri) whose podcasts I listen to in the morning, mentioned a fun fact about Utah. They said that the state of Utah consumes more candy than any other state. Sweet candy, not chocolate, but like the kind of stuff you’re into. I found that interesting. I guess you are living in the right place. ;)
The Hungry Runner Girl
HAHAHA that is hilarious… I believe it! All of my friends love gummy/sweet candy too!!!
Brandie Mohror
Did we get your playlist for this race yet? I need some new tunes:)
The Hungry Runner Girl
YES!!! I will post it this week:) Thanks Brandie!
Rachel @ Simply Rachel Nicole
Yum I live grilled pineapple from Tucanos!! Can’t wait to read your race recap :)
Dejah
You’re so hardcore Janae!! Way to go! I love running in the rain, but only if it’s a light drizzle. :)
I just ran my half marathon PR today!! Whoot! Well I’ve only run one other prior to this so it was pretty easy to crush that record but still!
Can you post your half marathon playlist from yesterday? I took some of your songs from your playlist for Boston and I loved them!!
The Hungry Runner Girl
AHHHHH HUGE CONGRATS ON THE PR that is so so awesome!! WOW!! I will definitely post my playlist this week:)
Elle
Running in the rain is my favorite! I usually go faster because its so resfreshing
Mary
Congrats on the run! I always have to braid my pony tail, even if its not raining, otherwise my pony will look like that hahaha. Since moving to SoCal, I’ve only been able to run in the rain a couple of times! Sunshine and blue skies are predominant. Which is awesome in the winter, but during the summer when i have to wake up to start running by 4am and it is still already 80 degrees? Woof.
Julia @ Lord Still Loves Me
I love how coherently you think during your races. For me, I am usually sporadically wishing for the next mile to be over! Your mom is the cutest! I admire the relationship you two have, and I hope when I am your age my mom and I continue to be as close as we are now. Closer hopefully!
McKenna
YAY for running in the rain! :)
McKenna@The Rain Runner
YAY FOR RAIN RUNNING! :)
Megan d
I had a lot of those same thoughts yesterday! I braided my ponytail though because I remembered your post about the tangles after Botson. It made combing my hair easy peasy after running in the rain. I suggest you read your posts before you run. Maybe you would help yourself out.
And why wasnt I your date to that wedding?? That food looks amazing and I want it all right now in my belly. If I leave and go buy something like that, no one can ever know. Mmmkay?
amy
I love that text from your mom! It made me smile. Congratulations on your 13.1. Your poor hair. That must be such a pain to brush out after the race.
That wedding food did look delicious!
Did u go to tucanos?! We love that place and try to go every time we come up there to visit. Our kids love the pineapple. The poor server has to stand there and just keep slicing til it’s gone. :)
Will Run For Coffee
Living in the UK, running in the rain is standard. I find it SO much easier than running in the heat. Even this weekend in the early 60s was too warm for me. The only rubbish thing about rain is when you have to wait for the start and get freezing cold :(
Your post made me want to go home, put on warm pyjamas and drink hot chocolate. Shame I have to do an entire day at work, then cycle home in the rain before this can happen.
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job
My half was also semi in the rain, but it was more of a mist so it was tolerable. I was definitely soaked though by the end with all the sweat, humidity, and mist. Good times haha
Lindsay
That dress your friend Jess has on is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! I want it!
Bobbi
I live in Seattle, if I didn’t run in the rain I’d never reach my goals. I do draw the line when it’s cold and there’s wind along with the rain. That’s just not fun.
Emily
Love this post! I feel the same about cycling p.s that food looks delicious.
