What are my running plans now?

So now what?

Besides the fact that you no longer have to hear me talk obsessively about Boston, I am going to take another 10 or so days off from running.   Some people are able to bounce right back to running after a marathon but that just doesn’t work for me.  My body tries to get every injury possible so I have to be extra careful with it after putting it through a marathon.  My next key race isn’t until the fall and so the best thing I can do for that race is to take some time off now before running again.

It feels really good mentally to take some time off too!  After being on a specific running schedule for 16 weeks it just feels nice to take a break from all of that.  I also love other types of workouts a whole lot so taking fitness classes and focusing on strength training sounds pretty great to me right now.   I have a few half marathons scheduled for this summer but they are more just for fun.  Marathon training will resume in July but don’t worry, there will still be plenty of running talk going on over here.

PS according to this interview Desi Linden takes two weeks off from running after the marathon.  Here is what she said about those two weeks of no running—> “I enjoy being human again and not logging 120 mile weeks and being hungry and mean all of the time. It’s a nice break.  It’s mental as much as it is physical.  And then at the end of the two weeks I am excited to go run.  I wanna feel like a runner again and sweat out all of the toxins and get in shape.”

I’m stoked to take Megan’s bootcamp classes and do strength training with her now that I have more time since I’m not marathon training.  So far since the marathon I have done a little bit of time on the elliptical and some core work like planking.

But mainly I have just sat on the ground and talked her ears off while she worked out.

Have I told you how nice it is to be with my little sidekick again?!  It is crazy how much she grew during the four days we were apart.

 The highlights from yesterday:

-30 minutes with puppies.  This produced just as many endorphins for me as a good run would.

-A big ol’ salad at home.  Grilled up some chicken, a red pepper and zucchini to add to the lettuce, avocado and TJ’s Thai Peanut salad dressing.

-Celebrating the birth of Lindsey.

-Girl time.  Good for the soul.

A break from running is great mentally and physically after a marathon! I used to take off barely any time but find that a week of no running at all is better, maybe even more. It’s nice to completely change pace and enjoy different things for a little bit.

Reply

As a rule I take off half the time as the length of the race. i.e. 1/2 marathon 6-7 days, Marathon 13-14 days. It’s what works for me.

Baby labs and baby Doxie’s are the best, but I’m partial. ;)

I am loving what barre is doing for me except the pain! I am SO sore!

Reply

It depends on how I feel after the race. Sometimes I don’t even get sore after a marathon, so I might take 5-7 days off then to just relax. Other times I’ll take 2 weeks off because I’m still tight and sore in spots.

I love labs and vizsla puppies! But really, all puppies are cute!

This summer I’ll be running the Utah Valley Marathon! :)

Reply

I love that feeling of a well-earned break from running after a solid race. You did amazing in Boston and I hope that you enjoy your rest to the fullest. living in Florida we don’t have any races during summer down here in Fort Lauderdale because it’s so hot. the next to raise on my schedule is the Chicago Marathon in October!!

Reply

I take 4-5 days off after a half and will take 10 days to 2 weeks off after my first full. I give racing my all so recovery is so important, both mentally and physically!
My next race is Portland Marathon in October, although Seattle has so many races in summer I may do a half or 15K.
I love puppies! My puggle was the cutest puppy and then lab and golden retriever puppies are too cute to handle.

Reply

-I take about a week off of running and then I start to build up my mileage again. After Rock n Roll SD Im going to take a little extra time off. I’ll be focusing on getting my BodyPump certification so it will be a nice little break from running :)
-Hopefully (I keep begging my parents) I’ll be able to run the America’s Finest City Half in San Diego this August! That was my first half marathon, so I really hope I get the chance to run it again!
-I have a lab/pitbull mix and she is the absolute cutest!!
-I’ve been loving BodyPump, as always :) But I’ve also become obsessed with HIIT Stations workouts! A fitness instructor at my gym sets up 5 stations and we do each one for 45 seconds with a 10 second rotation in between. Afterwards, we take about a 2 minute break while she explains new exercises, and then we go through a rotation again! We get work with kettle bells, ropes, Medicine balls, and weights. It’s a great workout!

Golden Retrievers!!!! Obsessed. Enjoy your days off :)

Reply

I’m ending a 9-day post marathon running break today. Like you, I’ve been so excited to finalky have the time and energy again for exercise classes! A different one for the last four days running, which makes for sone random sore spots everywhere! I’m going to still take it easy with runnjng for a few more weeks though for the mental rest.

Reply

Post race time off depends on how hard I go, when it’s all out, yup those first few weeks are just enjoying some walks and some nice stretching…then I’m usually itching to start easing back in to it.

Reply

It really depends for me. There are races I take a full week off and others that I run a day or two after. It all depends how hard I run, how long my training cycle has been and how my body is feeling. I try to play it by ear! Enjoy your time to relax and regroup!

Reply

My favorite nonrunning activity is still Pure Barre. Just love it :)

Reply

I think allll puppies are the cutest things ever! And then I want to adopt 10 of them haha. Enjoy your little running break! I typically do a week for half marathons and I’ve never run a full but I imagine I’d take a month off ;)

Reply

I take as much time as I think my body needs. Usually it’s about a week after a half marathon. I’m still fairly new to running so it takes a little longer for me to recover. Otherwise it depends on how my legs feel.
I have a trail race coming up in May, a try-a-triathlon in June as well as a Nike race in June. I’m still trying to find a fall half marathon I want to do. There are so many options!
My favourite type of dog is a Husky. They’re beautiful, but have so much fur!

Reply

After a marathon, I definitely take off two weeks. Like you, my body needs that rest and recovery time. For a half, though, I typically only take off a day or so, depending on the race and what my next races are after that one.

As for this summer, that’s up in the air. It’s hard to have solid races in the Texas summer heat. However, there’s a 15k I do every year in July, so hopefully that one will work out.

I am not a huge dog person, but I love toy terriers!! They are so little and precious.

As for non-running workouts, I love playing tennis. I wish I got to play more!

Reply

4-5 days after a marathon, a month after Comrades marathon – 90km (56.2 Miles).
LOVE Great Danes, got one – 13 months old and still a puppy.
No races for this year, doing base training, next year COMRADES!!
Sadly I just enjoy running, don’t even like stretching and core
Enjoy your time off

I am really glad to hear how you take off from running, because I did my first marathon in March and did a PR 10k the next weekend and then a PR half marathon three weeks after that. It has felt like just too much running and my muscles, while I never have had any serious injuries, have definitely felt tight and sore some stays. I hate to take time off now when the weather is so great, though, so I may casually run for a few weeks and then totally take off a week or so when the heat comes back.

This has been my first time doing this so I am definitely learning that every body is different! I think I got caught up in how fast some people bounce back and didn’t really listen to my body…live and learn!

Reply

For me the time off is directly related to how I feel. The better I race, the more sore I am. After Monday I was sore, but not as much as I thought that I would be! That was one of the ways that I knew I had a much faster marathon in these
Legs! I didn’t quite push it enough!!

Reply

Sounds like such a good plan, Janae. Seeing the big picture is so important in having a long running career! Plus, I always remind myself “rest is training, too”

I think all puppies are cute but we’ve had 2 labs and when they were puppies they were SO cute but also SO naughty!!

Since I only run 3-4 days per week, I love cycling (outdoors), swimming, yoga, rowing and TRX. I mix all these into my week and my body likes the variety (plus, helps w/ the whole injury thing which I can totally relate to).

Reply

I’ve been loving Barre workouts at home! I used to do them regularly and I’ve never been more lean and toned. I’m not expecting that to happen now that I’m 20 weeks pregnant but it feels great to do them still!

Reply

Which barre workouts have you been doing from home? I need some more recommendations.

Reply

I started going to the Bar Method recently and it is GREAT – I think they have videos so you may want to google them . . .

Reply

I own all the Booty Barre DVD’s and they are a killer workout. Xtend Barre is also great!

Reply

How much time do you take off after a marathon? A 1/2 marathon?
I took two days off after my half on Sunday. I didn’t feel too sore so I elected to do a “reverse taper”. All my runs for the next week and a half or so will be easy.

What races do you have scheduled for this summer?
Nothing scheduled, but I’m already thinking about another half marathon in June or July! If I don’t end up doing 13.1, I’ll sign up for a 5K, but I really love the half marathon distance. Just feel guilty for signing up for so many races!

What breed of puppies do you think are the absolute cutest?
All of them. Puppies are like babies…they are all cute!

Any non-running workouts that you have been loving lately?
Today I’m taking a Cycle/Weights/Abs class. I absolutely love it! 30min spinning and 30min of weights and abs done on the floor with light weights or body weight. I can’t handle a full spinning class, so this is perfect!

Reply

You definitely deserve that break.!! It’s good to take breaks from running sometimes. Especially after running an awesome marathon.!
All puppies are cuuute.!

Reply

During your recovery , at any point do you have a surge of energy and get a huge urge to run? What do you do instead or do you run?

Reply

For me, I actually feel better (mentally and physically) if I go for a few short/easy runs the week of my race. Otherwise, I feel cranky and unhappy and my body feels achy. I don’t push it or anything, but it really helps.

I have a lot of races coming up! I love hot running weather, so I schedule all of my races in June and later so I don’t have to train much in the winter.

Puppies are the best! I volunteer at a shelter as a dog walker, and it’s the BEST when puppies come in. We get mostly pit bulls and they are so cute and cuddly when they’re young (and when they’re older as well..I love pitties!)

Reply

I have a havanese and he is the cutest and sweetest dog. Sure he may be 10 lbs, but he thinks he’s a lab and plays like one. He’s the best.

Reply

I took almost 2.5 weeks off after my marathon but I only take a couple of days off after a half marathon. I always start back slowly though to avoid injury.

I don’t normally workout – other than running. I’m starting a new exercise regime next week to get my body ready for the honeymoon and bikini season. I’m excited/nervous/hoping I don’t give up after one day. I’ve never really done any weight lifting before so it should be interesting :)

Reply

Great idea taking a little time off!! Isn’t it crazy how 10 days feels like a pretty long break from running but it’s really just a few days! That’s when you know you’re a hardcore runner :)

I took two weeks off after philly marathon- absolutely NO running. The two weeks following my two weeks completely off I only ran when I felt like it and only went however far I felt like going that day. I felt really energized after that !

I had to smile reading ur comment about how much Brooke has grown since you were away. Isn’t it crazy how much little ones change and grow in just a matter of days?!! I’m always amazed to see that with my daughters.

Reply

I try to listen to my body. I usually take 3 days off and then super easy low mile running. I usually do not go farther than 3 miles at a time in the first week and half or so and then slowly add a mile just going at whatever pace is comfortable

Reply

This is so good for you and you trained so hard. You deserve this time off. When you’re ready to run your body will announce itself and declare it a running day loud and clear. Enjoy the cross training :)

Reply

I took about 10 days off from the marathon – but I haven’t really dived back into any hardcare training since then (marathon was in November) just steady running, nothing too big. I wonder how I did run those big mileage weeks though.

Half marathons – depends. sometimes it is a week, sometimes it is only a couple of days if I’m in the middle of another training cycle.

I have 4 more races this spring – ending with a 15K Nike run in Toronto – then nothing until the fall. I generally spend most of the summer training for whatever is happening in the fall.

Reply

I usually take a few days off after a race, but I really just go by feel. If I am super sore, then I take a bit longer. I also wait a few weeks or even longer to resume harder training, like long runs and speedwork.

I have a half coming up in a few weeks and then I don’t have a race until my fall marathon :)

Reply

I usually start running 6 days after a half and 14 after a full but slow easy miles for the first week back.
I am biased about puppies. My labradoodle was adorable as a pup.
My summer calendar is empty but the fall has 4 halfs and a full

Reply

I usually take 5-7 days off after a marathon, and 3-4 after a halfer. I start back sloooowwwwlllyyyy and usually feel like Frankenstein’s monster for the first few runs. I’m going to focus on shorter distances the rest of the year. I may do a track mile race in June (yikes!), and then a bunch of 5ks.
I love golden retriever pups. So cute. Though, any puppy is adorable. As are kitties.
As far as non-running workouts — I actually avoid those, too, until about a week after a marathon. I used to spin, but my favorite teacher left the gym :( so now I just walk my dog and stretch. Does eating count as a non-running workout? Cuz if so, I’m in it to win it.

Reply

I’m incredibly biased when I say golden retriever puppies are the best! They’re so roly poly and all fluffy and smiles.

I take at least 2 weeks off after major races for the exact same reason. I want to be able to sleep in and skip workouts if I want to.

Reply

See, I am so in love with running that I wouldn’t even want to take time off. I ran the day after I ran my 50 miler! It actually feels better to get my legs moving and flush out all the yucky feeling. I go SO slow and stop to stretch a million times. I have to admit that the very reason I haven’t raced in 2 years is mostly because I don’t want to slow down or have to take time off! I’m weird.

Reply

My legs are still sore from Boston! I’m going to try running on Saturday.
Races: north fork 50 this summer!
I have two cavalier King Charles spaniels and they’re adorable!

Reply

It is definitely nice to take those training breaks once in a while. My mind would go crazy if I was always on a training cycle.

Reply

I usually take a couple of days rest and then slowly start to ease back into cross training. I am running some local 5ks and 10k along with the Ogden Marathon, Timp Marathon and the Big Cottonwood in September. Congrats again on Boston!

Reply

I’m glad you’re taking a break and resting and relaxing after your huge accomplishment! Puppy time is the best!

Reply

I took about 10 days off from running but only a few days off from working out. I can’t sit still for too long so I was itching to get back to strength training and other workout classes. I feel the break is important for your mental well-being along with physical. I’ve been loving classes at The Barre Code. Not only do they have strength workouts, they also offer HIIT classes that help with cardio conditioning. I’m signed up for a few 5ks this year, nothing long distance.

Reply

I have a few half marathons coming up in the next few months, but I’m not feeling super connected to training right now…

Reply

I think golden retriever puppies are the cutest simply because of the floppy/clumsy factor! So cute!
I pretty much dislike all forms of exercise besides running. At times I will tolerate yoga or biking. I DO love hiking on rough trails, though!

Reply

Puppies are the BEST. I get giddy when around a litter, such happy souls.
That salad looks amazing!
Enjoy your rest you certainly worked hard for it.

Reply

Are you getting a puppy!?!? I personally love rescues because they are all kinds of different breeds mixed into one and end up being the cutest/sweetest pups you can ever imagine. And they make great running partners!

Enjoy your well deserved rest!

Reply

I always take a week off that seems to work for me. I fill my time with spin class, swimming, long power walks, hiking and weight training. Thankfully I like a lot of different fitness to keep me from going crazy!

Reply

Bernese mountain dog or yellow lab

Reply

I might be partial because we used to have one, but I think Cocker Spaniel puppies are pretty cute.

Reply

That’s great that you listen to your body and take some time off from running after your marathons. I also love what Desi has to say about the topic! I typically will take two or three weeks off of running after a marathon, but only a few days after a half marathon (unless I am feeling burnt out). If my head is not in it, I don’t force it.

Since I am almost 5 months pregnant, I am not doing a whole lot of racing this summer. I am doing a half marathon this upcoming Sunday, but after that it will probably be 5Ks and 10Ks for fun. I just want to continue to be as active as possible. ☺

Golden Retriever… I WANT a golden so bad!!!

Reply

I take 2 weeks! More than anything, I mentally need a break. It is so weird after a marathon to wake up and not think, “okay how many miles today?”. Enjoy it!

Been loving barre! But only at home videos. I can run a marathon but I cannot do an 8 minute barre workout without feeling like I am going to die. That stuff is no joke.

Have a wonderful, amazing day!

Reply

That salad looks so summery and scrumptious! I know a lot of people struggle with the downtime due to recovery after a race, but I always love it. I agree, it’s nice to feel human again, and really soak up that resting time. Even if I don’t have the race I intended, I always feel as though I’ve earned it! :)

And I’m partial to basset hound puppies – I mean, THOSE EARS.

Reply

i love the post-marathon rest period. i usually end up taking nearly a month off, but start jogging a bit after two weeks. enjoy!

Reply

I raced a half on Saturday and am having trouble not running. I enjoy the break, but I miss the endorphins! I’ve been doing more cross training and lots of walks to occupy my time. You deserve some time off after completing such an amazing marathon!

Reply

I have a 20k and a half this summer.
Do you have a jogging stroller recommendation?

Reply

I usually take a few days off and then go out for a slow, slow, slow run. I ran Boston on Monday too and I will probably run sometime this weekend… if my legs cooperate. Congrats again on a great race!

Reply

I love that you are really taking the time to fully recover from the marathon. You never fail to be a breath of fresh air Janae!

cutest breed of puppies: huskies!

Reply

I generally take 1-2 weeks off after a marathon. I don’t usually take a break after a half. Race schedule is Lost Creek Lake 30k this Saturday, Pacific Crest half june 28, and Fueled by Fine Wine July 12- my birthday :) that’s ass far as I have gotten. For me, labradoodle puppies are the cutest!! My cross training consists of boot camp, Pilates, and yoga, a good mix for me!
Congratulations on such a phenomenal effort for and at Bosyon janae, those were tough conditions and you rocked it!

Reply

Oh my goodness, if you love puppies you NEED to take Brooke to the Puppy Barn in American Fork! They have puppies just hanging out for people to hold and play with. And you can buy them too if you’re into that :) We went yesterday and it was the best!

I take a week or two off from a marathon, depending on how I’m feeling.

I am focusing on a BQ sometime in September (depending on when registration closes for 2016!)

Reply

After a marathon, I usually take a few days off then shuffle out a run/walk (whatever my legs feel like doing). Sometimes it just feels good to get my legs moving again.

It sounds like you’ve got a very solid post-Boston plan for your upcoming halfs and fall marathon. I wouldn’t be surprised if you PR’d your next one!

I’m not a geneticist, but if I was, I would invent a dog that basically didn’t ever grow from its puppy-dom (not the potty training or chewing, just the adorableness).

Reply

I usually take the week off or so after a marathon. Halfs depend on if I was racing, but most likely it was just a training run for a full :)

Pugs and huskies are the cutest puppies in my book!

This summer I’m doing a 200 mile bike race and then recouping before ramping up for IM Louisville in October. Lots and lots of sweaty in my future :)

Reply

I love dalmation puppies :)

Can you share where you got the “you are my sunshine” necklace you wore for the marathon? thanks!!

Reply

I think it’s awesome that you’re taking a little time off of running after the marathon – I definitely believe you that it’s good not only physically but mentally, too!
I’ve never run a full marathon, but when I’ve run halves in the past I would usually do a very short and slow shake-out run two days after the race but then barely run the rest of that week. I’d always do a lot of yoga/stretching/foam rolling, too.

Reply

Alaskan klee kais are too flippin cute!

Currently doing (and loving) Jamie easons livefit trainer program! I just started the last phase and it’s got a lot of plyometric type activity in it which is kicking my butt! Much different than the steady state cardio I’m used to :)

Janae!! I saw this story and immediately thought you would love it! It’s a father who ran at the front of the pack for the first mile and a half so his kids would see him on TV. So so sweet. Congrats again on a great race!

I took a week off after my last marathon, went for a jog and then realized I needed to take a little more time :)
It works well for me to ease back into running. I love spin, yoga and swimming as cross training! Stretching and core work also. Swimming is so gentle on my muscles and feels really good.
Puppies!! Labradoodle puppies are to die for!!!! Golden Retrievers are super cute too!!
Enjoy the rest time!! :)

PUPPIES!

When I finished my first half marathon I felt lost since I was no longer working towards a goal. I was so used to my weekends having long runs in them and all the structure that came with training. This time around it has been easier since I do so many other things besides run that I never feel like I am lost for something to do.

Reply

I finished my first marathon! Very soggy Garmin but I did it! Now I am taking two weeks off and then will resume running for an upcoming half. I’ve learned if I don’t have something ‘on deck’ even if it’s a way out, I won’t do anything!

Good for you for taking ten days off from running. I have followed you for a long time, and I have many concerns that your eating disorder and exercise bulimia are not truly under control. I really care about you and would like so much to see you take ten or more days of from exercising and from so much obvious exercising to work off every calorie you take in. Please eat like a normal person for a few days – not just fro yo and salads and then a run/spin/core/boot camp to attempt to take away any possible “weight” those minimally nutritious foods might give you. I have seen your blog from before Billy, during Billy, and after, and I have to say that I worry that lots of your issues with “boys” (who by your age I would hope are actually MEN), have to do with your obsession with weight, exercise and an odd need to never ever spend time alone. I admire your love for your child, but please spend less time exercising and more time with her; every time I read your blog I notice you are out for fro yo/girls night/dating and Brooke is somewhere (? with your parents I assume?). You live a very blessed life, with no forty hour a week job, a constant babysitting system on call, apparently plenty of money for expensive things like fake eyelashes and bags and boots and etc. I know that you have suffered a very hard marriage but I would suggest that maybe an actual therapist would be better than many girls nights out, for learning to make a better relationship with your body and with men, and while I am sure Dr. Bennett is a really nice man, you need an actual doctor to look at your actual health. A chiropractor is in fact NOT a sports medicine doctor and I think you would find yourself in a very different place in life if you were seeing the right professionals (including a coach who was a bit less disordered herself). You are a raising a beautiful little girl. Please show her a healthy mother who is not body dismorphic, man obsessed, and unable to spend time alone. Please. Please be healthy. You have done some awesome things and Boston is awesome. Now please springboard into being someone that other women should emulate instead of pity and feel some strange pang of sadness for.

Reply

I actually just glazed over most of your comment because you are making some pretty extreme judgements based off of me sharing 15% of my actual life on a blog but I would like to address Brooke. The only time she is not with me is when she is with her dad one weekend a month, the hour that I spend at the gym, if something for work pops up or if I do have a date (which hasn’t been in a very long time). She is always with me (if you look at the picture above my friend is just holding her and sometimes she just isn’t in the picture). It is very easy to make judgements about people and I honestly don’t care about all of the other judgements that you talked about but I am an incredible mother who spends every second possible with her daughter. I work hard to provide for the two of us during her naps and after I put her to bed and the rest of my day is devoted to her.

Reply

Wow, that’s pretty presumptuous, judgmental, and downright rude…Janae, you know yourself, you’re a grown woman and mother, and you seem perfectly healthy to me (not that it matter WHATSOEVER what I think!). To each their own IN LIFE, but what this person fails to realize is that we all eat what WE CHOOSE to eat. So what if you love froyo and salads, and are a spectacular athlete? From your blog, you spend a great deal of time with Brooke and it’s a beautiful thing. This person was clearly just on here to be a buster…It is in EVERY child’s best interest for all moms to allow themselves some “mommy time” to do whatever they choose, whether it be running, cooking, hanging with the girlfriends, shopping, etc. I know you’re not trippin’ off this chick….

Reply

And BTW, Miss Sally, what about us working moms, who have to be away from our kids for 9 hours a day, 5 days a week, in order to provide a home, food, and clothing for our kids!? Get real. Open up your eyes. No parent spends 100% of their time with their kids. We all need to remain our best, so that we can be the best parent we can be. How the heck can you judge Janae for taking “me” time for friends (which she often takes Brooke along too!), RARE dates (that’s not even fair to criticize her on that), and running? RIDICULOUS.

Reply

Sally – Did you ever hear the saying. “I’m too busy working on my own grass to notice if yours is greener?” You should try that…
Janea- You don’t need me or anyone else to tell you that you are doing an amazing job in life, with Brooke and with your fitness – obviously.
I wish I could spend as much time with my kiddos as you do with Brooke – she’s super lucky and I’m sure she knows it!
Not sure why Sally comes here to read your blog but we all come because we love it, it’s entertaining and you ARE a role model for all who are doing their best to be healthy and strong! Keep doing you and let folks like Sally keep worrying about what everyone else is doing…

Enjoy your well deserved break during training cycles! I used to take four days off before I even tried to go out on an easy run, and even then, I would run/walk until my legs felt well rested (except for the three different years that I ran three marathons in four weeks).

My next door neighbor is getting a puppy in three weeks, and I can’t wait! :-)

Reply

I let my body dictate how much time that I take off….Honestly, I tend to want to return to running ASAP. I’ve completed two 50ks within three weeks so I’m taking a week off right now in order to keep looming injuries at bay.

I have a 50 miler scheduled for May + another in June that are actually training for a VERY aggressive 50 miler in August (Squamish50)….I have a few shorter races thrown in just for the sake of training + fun.

Great Danes are adorable puppies….We have a Great Dane / Aussie mix and even though he’s the naughtiest little dude, I just cannot stay mad at that cute face.

I’ve been riding my bike A LOT while I recover from this weekend’s race.

Looks like you’ve got a great plan until your next race!

I usually take a week of after half marathons (but I’ve only done two). No big plans for races this summer, but I’ve already signed up for my 4th half in November.
